Great Teacher! You have to pay attention but it was fun to be in her class since she has actual hands on experience with the material.

Liberal democratic slant. Rubbish.
Zzzz.
I liked her - some people don't. I found her to be really interesting, and has cool insight since she actually served in the House of Representatives. I'm not liberal at all, but I still found her to be giving a well rounded view of politics. No PLS teacher is very easy, so go with her.
Excellent Instrustor. Knows her stuff and is excellent at imparting her knowledge onto others. Didn't stick too close to the syllabus, but excellent otherwise.
Lynn was great, she has a direct and unbiased presentation, and she challenges you to think. The fact that she was in DC for 8 years adds so much to the class, she has great stories to tell.
For the unidentified person to suggest that Lynn Rivers teaches with a "liberal Democratic slant" is rubbish. Although she was a former Democratic Congresswoman, she was never biased in her class. Great teacher.
I found Lynn to be an easy instructor to please. Take good notes. If she writes it on the board you're going to need the info on tests! Only bias I saw was the same that most yankees exhibit toward the south. Other than that, none was in evidence. Very even-handed in her "dem v rep" presentations.
Being an elected rep doesn't make you a good instructor. Has a liberal bias, but so what if she could teach.
I enjoy her lectures, she makes them interesting. Although her tests are a little challenging.
I took good notes(or so I thought)..attended class every day...and FAILED!! I did not enjoy her dry sense of humor or arrogant ways. I obviously had to take the class over and recieved an A with a different instructor where I actually retained the knowledge. She can't teach if you ask me!
The class was challenging, but I would highly recommend taking a class with her because of her immense knowledge and understanding of the subject. She is quite helpful in reviewing and answering any questions you may have.
Incredible proffessor! A little sarcastic at times so don't let her get to you! Take good notes and you'll be fine. Don't ask stupid questions and get involved in class discussions!
Great instructor! If you go to class and take good notes you will do well in the class. I was not interested in taking this class, but to my surprise I really enjoyed it. She did a great job at representing both the dems and the reps and used a lot of great examples. Some questions on the tests were tricky but overall simple if you took good notes
She is not compromising in the least
Lynn is an AMAZING teacher. I've never been more interested in politics
Okay, let's just say that she cannot teach well, she expects you to keep up with her when she goes 500 miles per hour and she cannot understand when you have a situation that interferes with your class. DO NOT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL!

She is heavily biased towards her own political party and does not do an effective job of teaching anything other than her own self-righteous opinions.
She is heavily biased towards her own political party and does not do an effective job of teaching anything other than her own self-righteous opinions. Sorry you lost your spot to Dingell. Get over it.
I always thought there was 3 branches in gov't......I had her for a summer class, which was 3 hours long, 2 days a week......so what happened to the 3rd branch of govt, Lynn?
No Liberal bias whatsoever, she does a great job teaching the material and it one of the better PLS teachers at the college
Despite what I've heard she is a very nice teacher and NEVER discussed her political views in class. The course itself had some difficult content, but she was very helpful in clarifying anything that you don't understand. I would highly recommend taking this course with her because she is so knowledgeable and helpful.
I think Lynn is a great teacher who gets a bad rap fpr being to strict. I don't think it is unreasonable at all that she expect us to behave like adults, do our homework, and turn it in on time. Having her as my govenment teacher made learning fun. Because of her experience she was able to translate what our books said into real-life experiences. This makes her classes easier to understand and more interesting.
I thought that it was a very laid back class, and was quite easy to get through.

I thought she was a great teacher! Class should be challenging otherwise you aren't getting your money's worth. She made the course material interesting and used a lot of great examples. She tried hard to not allow her political views interfere with the content of the course. I didn't think she taught with much bias and I am not a democrat.
Well after being in the house of reps for ten years I would have to say that as being a professor she does a good job and not her class is not that hard. I recommend taking her.
This class sucks.
It was her first time teaching it and I think next time she'll have a better courseplan worked out. I don't think I'd recommend taking this class without taking her PLS 112 as she referenced it a lot and that probably won't change.
shez bad, tooo hard. DONT TAKE WITH HER.
Great teacher! Gave examples of her experiences in congress to help students grasp concepts. Motivated me to be more politically active! I just loved her!
Amazing Prof. with great life experiences. She really knows what goes on in politics and was able to share it with the class. I'd recommend her to anyone with an open mind! Close minded right wing republicans should stay away though.
Good teacher. The class is actually intresting and she has a lot of enthusiasm for teaching. Just be careful of the tests- a lot of trick questions. Most of her tests are take home or in class so its not so hard.
Liberal. Knows law and Congress. Does not really know US history. Invites "discussion" only from the left so she can say that you should get involved to change things. Conservatives get no props. Loves government involvement. Recognizes good Republican leaders. Tests hard; grades fair.
I took Lynn's class before I transferred to the U of M and I found her to be both passionate and knowledgable about US politics and law. Please! If students are whining about a few regular quizs and tests, then you will not be prepared for the upper level classes at a four year college. In comparison, Lynn's class is a cake walk. Take advantage!
Great teacher. Very cool to be able to hear a teacher be able to talk about things first hand from her time in congress. Tests are tricky, but one is take home and the other is open-book open-notes. If you show up, pay attention, and take good notes, you'll do fine. She does miss class a lot though. I would recommend taking her.
Lynn is as good as they get. Who knows more about politics than our former Congresswoman. The key thing in Lynn's class is attendance. If you show up in class and take good notes, you'll be fine. The notes are essential for the tests. Although Lynn makes no bones about her political leanings, she is very open minded and covers both sides.
She is terrible. The class is too easy. She is enthusiastic about the subject but is a terrible educator. She gives 3 tests throughout the class, all three she had to redo because of poor test design... the frustrations get in the way of the learning.
Amazing teacher! One of the most interesting teachers I have ever listened to. Her class was fun because I connected with her attitude and passion in the subject. Not too hard to get an A, make sure your hear her lectures, in class notes are very important. Textbook use was helpful but not mandatory. Tests and quizzes were a breeze if you study.
She is a good teacher. Since she served in Congress before, she knows what she's talking about. In class take notes, a quiz once a week. With the quizzes, you don't use your notes for the first 10-15 min. the last 5-10 min. you can. two tests. first one you get to use all your previous quizzes and the next one is take home. Highly recommended.
easyy class great teacher, she rocks
don't care for her. She cleary explains things in class and writes on board, when she gives quizzes she words questions vague and then the problems occur, if you write what she tells you somehow she marks off points b/c it's not what she was looking for? She gets aggresive when you ask questions, she gets defensive and attacks your questions.
When I took her political science class she missed six classes. She gave us a take home final with trick questions that didn't have much to do with actually learning the material. Surprisingly, her lectures were quite boring. I expected them to be interesting since she's been a state rep. I don't recommend her at all.
pretty good
This is an extruciatingly simple class.I did not really learn any thing from the class because every assessment she gave was open-book, aswell as open-note.The tests are also VERY straight-forward with a tremendously low difficulty level. If you just want to take her for the pre-requisite, I would highly recomend her.So far I have an 100% in her cl
I really enjoyed taking Lynn's class. She is proof that you don't need a PhD to be a good teacher. She is passionate and really inspired me to get more involved in government. Since she was in Congress, she brings that experience into the classroom. She presents the material in a very balanced and unbiased way. I would highly recommend her class!!
Hard to imagine somebody not passing this class if they stay awake and take notes.
Lynn Rivers is by far the best professor I have ever had. She is enthusiastic about what she teaches and has the life experience to make it relevant. Weekly quizzes kept me on track, and the midterm was difficult, but she does everything in her power to help you understand and retain the material. Absolutely fantastic class.
I love this teacher! Before starting, I dreaded having to take this class b/c I HATE anything to do with gov't, politics, or history. But she makes it so easy to understand and teaches us in an entertaining way. She was a Democrat in Congress, but you wouldn't know since she is not biased at all. She makes no reference to her political views at all
shes kind of conceited b/c of the fact that she served 8 years in congress, so that kind of gets in the way, but her class isn't that bad. I'd recommend her.
Lynn is awesome! She is very fair when she grades (and typically uses the curve on major exams), relates history to our constitution without boring you with defs and dates I hated anything government before this class and now I cant wait to know more I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HER!!
Crazy little woman. Very funny, entertaining. If you miss at least one class..you're screwed. You have to show up to every single class, and if you do you'll pass with flying colors. Don't even waste your money on the book..we only opened it 2 or 3 times.
Lynn is a wonderful teacher. She was on congress for awhile and ties information together from her personal experience and history. I would recommend her to anyone wanting or needing to take this class.
Very entertaining, and really keeps your focus
Lynn Rivers was awesome!!! She inspired me to change my major to education! You can't miss class...too much goes on whether you're there or not. If you're willing to be there and pay attention, you will be fine!
Awesome!
she knows her stuff, but WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO MAKE UP QUIZZES PERIOD! you have to come to class on time, and get notes from a class mate if you miss class, you will be lost unless you know politics. even though you will learn a lot. make sure you find a good note taker in the class you can get an A yes, missing quizzes and notes will jack you up!
She makes the class interesting. I learned a lot, and it is a very easy class. All the quizzes are open notes, so as long as you go to class and take good notes, you shouldn't have a problem.
She has been in congress for 8 years so she knows her stuff. Have to take notes and every quiz is open note, get to drop one quiz and there is a mid-term that accounts for half the semester than a final that accounts for all the material in the 2nd half of the semester. Easy and a great teacher, no surprises. Crazy curve, she wants you to get a A
The Lady really knows her stuff. Before coming to her class I had no interest in Political Science. Her class was worth every penny I spent
She is a great instructor. she makes everything very easy to understand. If you pay attention you will get a good grade. Everything she says is worth hearing, she is not like most teachers who tend to get side tracked during class. But, make sure you study for her quizzes and tests.
I really liked her. She knows what she's talking about and I learned a lot from her. You can use notes on all quizzes and the final is take home. She likes to use tricky questions though. I definitely recommend her! You won't be disappointed.
Shes good knows what she is talking about. Quiz about every other class you get to use your notes. Midterm is right out of your notes. and Final is take home. VERY easy class. shes full of life and fun. you miss a quiz you do not get to make it up but you do get to drop one quiz at the end of the class. Tends to get sick ALOT, But good teacher!
Rivers is fantastic. She made government interesting, and even though I had it first thing in the morning, I was able to stay awake. Notes can be used on all the quizzes, and the final is take-home. She uses great examples to describe everything, and if you pay attention and take notes, it's an easy A.
Rivers is by far my favorite teacher I have ever had. She gave first-hand experiences, clear examples, open note tests, and a curve on the final exam. Make sure you take notes on what she writes, and it'll be a very easy class.
The first thing I noted when taking her class is that she is a politician at heart, not a teacher. Her class was so easy I basically never had to exert any effort the entire time. However, she has GREAT lectures and I did learn a lot.
Awesome lectures, challenging quizzes but she usually goes over them with the class and everybody gets an A. Great teacher!
She can be really tough. Make sure you follow her directions, and on the first time, she has no patience! Great lectures, she knows her stuff, she used to be in congress. Take good notes.
Easy to listen to, she actually knows what she's talking about.
She is a very good professor.Makes the class interesting, and gives a lot of usefull examples. Tests can be hard and tricky, but the quizzes are very easy usually open notes.Take good notes, pay attention and you will do fine in class. There is extra credit for class participation.
She is able to provide the best real world examples of the material this class covers because she spent 8 years in the US congress and a couple years in the Michigan State congress as well. If you want to really understand hot topics in politics, this class is the way to do it.
I HATE government but she honestly is so clear with her notes. If you write down everything on the board you WILL get an A. MOST quizzes are open note anyways so why not? I dont want to say shes easy because thats rude but she makes the class hard to fail if you attend MUST ATTEND ALL classes, I missed one and im still suffering
Her experience as a politician really helps to solidify her examples. I loved her lectures and took a ton of applicable information away from her class. She has no intention of making you memorize dates and names, but rather focuses on imparting you with knowledge of your rights in the constitution. Attendance not mandatory, but vital to success.
She is a Great teacher! Very clear and you truly learn a lot. Although attendance is not mandatory it is crucial. If you pay attention and take good notes this class will be a breeze. Also she gives real life examples to make things make more sense.
Lynn Rivers is a great professor. She is very clear with her subject material and genuinely cares about the students she teaches. She also has experience in what she teaches, as she was a member of the U.S House of Representatives. DO NOT MISS CLASS. Attendance is not mandatory, but is needed to pass.
She doesn't even talk about the material, all she does is talk about one thing the whole time and is horrible at explaining things to the class. Very boring and plain.
She's has a great teaching style and keeps things very organized, it makes it very easy to take effective notes. She also gave really helpful examples, some of which are of her own experiences. As long as you pay attention and take notes, you should do well. This was easily my favorite class of the semester and I highly recommend it.
Lynn is a great teacher. She's truly knowledgeable about the subject matter and she makes it relevant and easy to grasp. She has quizzes occasionally and as long as you come to class, listen, and take notes you should be fine.
Lynn makes coming to class fun, if you interact, you will have a great time. Treats you like your age, she will swear every now and again and is very funny.
Very knowledgeable about what she's teaching. She does not use blackboard, which isn't helpful. She lets you use notes on the quizzes most of the time. Great teacher though, I would definitely take her again.
If you do the work and behave respectfully, she'll like you tons. Otherwise you suck anyways so you deserve it.
She knows the subject well, however she is incredibly boring! Just a lecture and the white board. She doesn't use Blackboard. Some times rude, and she has a small vocabulary.... Said the same word about 30 times within an hour and a half.. If you don't show up to class you'll miss a lot. WOULD NOT take again!!
Lynn was so good! She had great, interesting lectures, and made learning the Constitution very easy. Although, you most definitely have to come to class everyday because you will miss important content, and she won't go in as much detail the next class. Would take her again!
Her lectures are never boring. Copy her notes off the board and study them for quizzes and exams. Her quizzes are from these notes. No HW,just text reading that I found useless. She repeats every class the main points of previous class and that means they will be on the quiz. Last 15 mins of quiz you can look at your notes. Final exam is open note
She knows her stuff and makes it fun!
Phenomenal lecturer, make a friend if you miss class and need notes. Her qualifications are public service, law, U.S. govt. I made mistake of taking her 112 class with this; should've taken PLS online. She grades on a curve inside an enigma, purports to offer extra credit for exceptional participation, canx classes (?bad) w/o sub. Tread carefully.
Lynn is very experienced in the political world which makes her lectures that much more credible. She answers any questions you have and clarifies to any extent you need. Lectures are how you'll learn the material, so if you don't attend you won't pass. Has quizzes in class but occasionally lets you use your notes. Only 1 or 2 homework assignments.
Excellent instructor that has had real world experience in politics. Everything on the tests and quizzes is from what she talks about in class, so as long as you pay attention to her lectures and take notes, youll do well in the course.
Even though attendance isnt required you will not pass unless you show up. Notes are very important, she will let you use them on quizzes/final exam. I found the lectures very helpful and interesting (coming from someone who isnt that interested in Gov.).
Amazing teacher. Got an A in her class. Even let me make up the final I missed. Real world experience and knowledgeable. Dont ask stupid questions or shell roast you.
She is very experienced in the political field. make sure you show up to class even though attendance is not mandatory. She makes class very interesting, but does not go over what will be on quizzes. test reviews are a lot different than the test questions. Make sure you take notes!!! she uses the book for reference but you really don't need it...
Wow. I don't want to bash her, because she seems like a decent person, but her quizzes are jam-packed with trick questions based on tiny technicalities (She prob learned as a politician) I'm doing well in the class but it's come through an unhealthy amount of studying, stressing, and at one point tears because I knew I would still slip up on tricks
Her lectures are very informative. As long as you show up and take notes you will be completely fine. She has lots of quizzes but she NEVER gives pop quizzes. She is very easy to get a hold of if you ever have questions.
Mrs. Rivers is an extremely intelligent instructor. Many political science professors teach you from the book, Rivers teaches from her decades of experience in Michigan legislature as well as in D.C. If you can take just one class with her, do it. I promise you will not regret it. It will leave a profound impact on your life.
You're an adult. You're in college. She treats you like it. Do not expect to pull one over on her. Do not think that you'll be able to con her. Lynn is a dedicated teacher who expects her students to pay attention, stay off their phones, take notes and do well. She doesn't assign homework, except some occasional reading. Be an adult and you'll ace.
Great professor, she is very knowledgeable. She worked in congress for many years and teaches very well. You might get 2 homework assignments that are easy and quick. Most of her class is just pure lecture. She makes her lectures hilarious and fun. I would highly recommend her. Easy class, and great teacher.
She's very well educated and experienced in the field she teaches! Definitely give her a try! She has weekly quizzes that can really boost your grade.
Shes a respected professor and is very experienced in government, and notes are mandatory for tests and quizzes.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you show up to every class and take good notes, the class is definitely an easy A. She lets you use your notes on quizzes/final exam, and all of the questions on her exams and quizzes come straight from the lecture notes. Take good notes, easy A. Great teacher, solid choice.
The worst teacher ever. This is supposed to be an easy class because it is PLS 112 but she is a very tough grader that you won't pass, so watch out. Avoid at all costs
The syllabus had no dates and was snarky. She ranted during class and her notes were terrible. I couldnt tell when she was instructing or on a tangent and she would always interrupt students. She wouldnt respond through email and didnt set up blackboard until the end of the semester. Just because you know something doesnt mean you can teach.
The worst teacher I have ever had
There are no worst professors
Even though Im not a fan of government stuff this class was really enjoyable. Lectures were engaging and easy to follow. She says you need to buy the textbook but we only used it a few times so its not really necessary. You can use your notes on the quizzes for the last few minutes before you turn it in. If you show up and try you can get an A.
The most boring and the worst teacher ever.
Avoid
Lynn definitely knows what she is talking about. She lets us use notes on quizzes/final, but not midterm. Very lecture heavy, but as long as you pay attention/take notes, you can pass. I had her during Winter 2020 (COVID19 shutdown in middle of semester). Difficult transition for everyone, but she worked to keep supporting students.
Knows what she's talking about for sure but so boring it's hard to pay attention.
TAKE ANY CLASS WITH LYNN RIVERS! She is so incredibly knowledgeable about political science and has a passion for passing her knowledge to the next generation in a way where the information is useful to daily life and to future education. Currently taking criminal justice classes and I already know tons of the information from taking her class.
So boring. Class is just PowerPoints. Weekly quizzes that are graded pretty harshly. Do not recommend taking unless you must.
she is a politician and has first hand experience in the field but it 100 percent does NOT translate in the class setting. She might be great in person but she was awful online when I took her. Goes on long tangents in class barely covers material on PP and the quizzes are awful your answers need to be her words otherwise you wont receive credit.
Has her own strong opinions, if you disagree.. its her way or the highway. Not very understanding regarding almost anything. Doesn't post you over all grade in the class. Only uses letter grades.
Professor Rivers is very knowledgeable in the political science area and is a former member of Congress. She doesn't knows anything about using zoom so its hard doing the online learning with her, but I feel like she would be great inperson. Pay attention to what she says and not what she puts on the PowerPoint. She doesn't put everything on the PP
Ms. Rivers is definitely passionate about her profession. I did enjoy taking the class because I did learn quite a bit of more in depth info on my prior knowledge of the American Govt. & it's operations & processes, along with the Constitution. She can tend to be one sided and her political views are definitely displayed throughout her lectures.
Ms. Rivers was a good professor & even has first-hand experience as a politician. I was really into her class in the beginning but definitely began to lose interest at the end of the semester; she only lectures the whole class time & there is no homework-- only exams. No extra credit, so you better write down every word she says & pass those exams.
Avoid at all cost unless you want absolutely no exceptions for anything. All she does is lecture about material that's not even material we NEED to know to do well. Acts like it's a TED talk rather than teaching a class. No extra credit, miss a test or quiz? too bad. fail. Rude, interrupts, acts like we all know what she knows. HARD. it's a 112...
Extremely knowledgeable and a fantastic class. Thinking about law school? Take this 100%. I would describe it as "intro to constitutional law". That said, you are only graded on quizzes & exams, which is sometimes tough because she phrases questions ambiguously. That said, you will learn quickly to avoid these traps.
This class was pretty easy, just take notes because you can use them on quizzes.
The class is probably the easiest class I've taken, there is no homework or projects just quizzes and exams which you're allowed to use notes on. She is also very knowledgeable in the subject and takes the time to explain everything clearly. Would recommend to anyone.
The semester I took Prof. Rivers was a strange one. She was absent for a significant amount of the semester, at no fault of her own. I wish I'd had more time to learn from her! She is a fantastic, extremely knowledgeable professor. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to take a polisci course.
There are a lot of quizzes with her, and the lectures are sometimes boring. She is very knowledgeable about the subject and knows what she is talking about. If you have questions, she will be able to answer them in a way you understand. She gives outlines for her quizzes, but they sometimes get confusing.
I enjoyed this class. Political science is not my thing but I learned a lot and was able to appreciate the value of what I was learning. The quizzes/tests were very specific so they were pretty tough.
Avoid this teacher. Outlines for quizzes are confusing, some material she has us study aren't even on the quizzes or tests. Rarely uses canvas and releases grades at the end of the term. Terrible powerpoints, rude and grading system is confusing. Sometimes let us take quizzes home. Avoid this teacher if you don't want a stressful semster
