Nice, Genuine, Caring and a Love of her subject matter. That's all we can ask for in a prof. I think other comment is slightly unfair. She took time to become acclimatized to the class. Made good alterations; has improved in the course of the semester. I'd take her again and suggest her! She is also fun; always smiles!
This teacher gose out of her way to make sure that her students understand the material given. She also will meet you whenever u need assistance.
Class was extremely boring at the beginning of the year but as the semester went on the material, as well as the class, became a-lot more interesting. Tests are easy and straightforward, a few papers to write but nothing too hard, I never once opened my book and I made A's on all the tests. Pay attention in class, take notes, and you'll get an A.
Class was BORING! Professor was helpful but rude and disrespectful so it makes you not even want to talk to her. Do not take this class if you do not know a lot about history or if you are not interested because you go off what you know and there is no textbooks.
awesome class and teacher
I loved this class. Dr. Deem is young and knows how to interest college students. This history class was very helpful and as long as you come to class and take notes/participate in class discussion..there is no reason not to do well. She is very approachable and will work with you however she can. The two novels we read changed my perception of his
Professor Deem changed my perception of history. It became a lot more interesting to me through her lectures. However, the testing (all essays) was more difficult than I expected. She is tough when it comes to making the grade and she has a high standard set for papers. You need to attend class but she is very understanding if you need help.
Dr. Deem is one of the better teachers on campus. Her tests SUCK (essay format) but other than that the class is really interesting. I learned a lot about the 20th century from this class. Attendence is mandatory but other than that there is little homework. Just one paper, and one quiz for each book(2) that we read for class. the quiz grades are a
I found her really interesting. She knows what she's talking about and is passionate about it. The test do suck, but there is extra credit for each. I made an A on each test. We didn't use the "text books," but definitely get the novels. Not a hard class if you go. She takes attendance, and is very helpful.
she made history really interesting. you have to take notes in order to do well in her class and you dont really need the text books that are required. attendance is taken but if you notify her you need to leave early or wont be there she is very accomadating. the tests are essay format but she gives study guides and they come straight from notes.
Dr. Deem was awesome! She was one of the two professors that ever changed my perception about history! Interesting information! BE THERE if you want to do well! For the readings - at least skim through! STUDY!
I had her for Modern Military History. Excellent teacher, very helpful and insightful. I would recommend her to any history student. Make sure to go to class though, its required and you will also receive extra credit opportunities this way. Awesome class and teacher!
Dr. Deem is by far the BEST teacher I've had so far. She keeps everyone interested in her lecture and is very well educated on her subject matter. She is extremely helpful when you need her and she is very nice. Her class is refreshing and even though I have it at 8:00 in the morning I don't mind going. She is a GREAT professor.
I did not do well in her class at all. She is not helpful. I was there every day and ook notes and still made a D, and I usually dont make D's. She does not give you anything helpful, no text book study, and she puts nothing online. I thought her lectures were interesting and she was very smart but was not well at making test compatable to lectures
I took Professor Deem for global connections. She is by far the best history teacher I ever had! If I could take her again, I would. Her lectures made you want to come to class bc they were so interesting, but it is your responsiblity to take good notes because she talks the whole time.
Deem is a good professor. She is very interested in the subject which made learning it interesting as well. Attendance is mandatory and she calls roll but is willing to work with students if they talk to her. Work is easy. Midterm is essay style and veyr hard. I paid attention in class, took notes, and was interested in the material and got a 66%.
It's a good introductory class. Don't take it if you have a lot of prior knowledge; you might be bored. No text book used, but one on reserve if needed. Very helpful, amusing and admits when she's unsure about something. All in all a great, awesome class!
Good professor, she has a passion for history and makes lectures interesting. Attendance is mandatory and there are random journal entries. Similar to a pop quiz I guess. There's no textbook, so if you miss a class you are screwed unless you get the notes from someone else, and hope they took good notes. Her grading is somewhat hard. Study.
I really liked her! Very passionate and knowledgeable, and almost theatrical lectures. However, she can have a temper. If you're one of the unfortunate people that accidentally falls asleep in class, prepare to face her wrath. Also, read all books assigned! Tests aren't too bad. All ID's, short answer, and essay.
She knows what she's talking about and will intrigue you the whole class. Time flies by and note taking is crucial, along with the reading assignments. If you're failing, go to her office hours, she'll do everything in her power to help you learn or study in a more efficient way. I absolutely enjoyed her.
Prof. Deem is really enthusiastic. She says at the beginning of the the semester that she will give you a hard time if you fall asleep..but the class was really interesting that it would be hard to. There's 2 essay exams and one final 10 page paper. I would recommend this course if your strength is in writing.
She is arrogant, and rightfully so. She has a passion for history and is a great professor. She cuts to the chase, makes her expectations clear. 3 short novels, tests are pretty easy and the journals are random but fairly simple. Attendance mandatory, but I always wanted to go. She's quirky. I'd take her again!
She makes the class very interesting probably one of the few classes that I have never been bored in. The only problem I had was how she grades, it seems like there is no set scale but besides that it is a class worth taking.
Not your typical film class. You may want to look for a different teach. She is very nice and helpful, but it is not the best film class. It is more of a history class. Dont get lazy and do all the work. Study and you will get atleast a B.
The class is not an easy A, but the lectures are so interesting! Professor Deem has high standards from the start, so be prepared. Three short novels to read and some online assignments. Nothing too difficult. Get blue books for journals and tests! Fun class overall.
She grades hard, but her lectures are very fun. Defiantly my favorite class this semester. She is the only history teacher that I have ever had that actually makes it interesting.
Professor talks down to students, she's arrogant and I wouldn't recommend her class if you're not a history major, it's just not worth the headache. Stupid take home tests take up way too much time. Also, 1/2 a letter grade is deducted per unexcused absence. I can't deny her lectures, they are interesting. But she is often unprepared for class
As a senior, I took this class because I thought it would be interesting. While the topic itself was fun, the class itself took the joy out of it. Massive workload, and shes a very very strict grader. Plus she is incredibly strict when it comes to attendance. My advice, stay far away
Good Class. A bit too much work, but as long as it was completed she graded easy. Lectures were fun and material interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but that's normal.
Professor Deem is a spunky, quirky woman who loves the subject she teaches. Every week summaries of the chapter are required and so is attendance. The work is annoying and tedious but doable. Her notes could be more detailed and you should definitely ask her personally what she wants on each assignment or test response. An easy B though.
Best teacher I've had on this campus. I hate history but she has so much passion for what she teachers. No matter how boring the material is... you will never fall asleep. You don't have to worry about skipping because you'll want to go to her classes. Assignments seem difficult but as long as you listen for 5 min, you'll get an A.
Had her three different times now for three distinctly different classes; a film class, a "war studies" class and a culture class. The course focus in each class....Germany in WWII. No matter what the syllabus says or what the text book is written about or even what the class is supposed to be about, this woman will find a way to make it about WWII
I really enjoyed her film and war class! I learned a lot about film. Tests are easy if you know the material (obviously). Very rarely lectures for long, we had breaks during class, and tons of extra credit! Even though the class is fairly easy, make sure you take advantage of the extra credit. Final exam is 2 essay questions online.
Ms. Deem's class is one of the best I have taken. She has a passion for what she teaches which makes it interesting you'll want to go to class. Tests are short answer/essay but are fairly easy as long as you pay attention & take good notes. We didn't have a textbook but we did have some novels to read. I would recommend this class to anyone.
It's not an easy A, but it is possible. She'll bend over backwards to help if you ask her for help, but she won't offer and won't "hold your hand" - if that's what you need look elsewhere. She's a great teacher; her tests challenge you, but are manageable (60% in class; 40% at home). Recommend her to anyone who wants to learn, but not be spoon-fed.
Hands down the toughest grading prof I have ever had, ridiculously so. She was also unclear on grading policies halfway through the summer session & is hardly avail. due to being out of the country. She cares more about handing out C's than students learning. This is a 2000-level class but she doesn't treat it as such. I was disappointed.
Dr. Deem is an energetic professor who really cares for her subject. That being said, with a big lecture-class like this, there is little individual attention and I thought that was shown in how she graded her tests. Overall, I would totally take her again, but maybe in a smaller class where we could have more one on one attention.
Hilarious woman who is obviously passionate about history. She is really smart and grades extremely hard looking for details. She gives 3 tests in the semester and gives an optional final.
She does a great job explaining history and makes it entertaining, but she goes pretty fast. Tests consist of identifying terms, so it's difficult to know what she's looking for. Online quiz about every week but those are fairly easy if you use your notes. Don't every try to leave class early- you will get called out.
She is a nice person and clearly loves history, but she is overall a hard professor. She doesn't put a lot of information on the slides on the screen so you have to listen and be able to write as fast as she's talking for important events/dates, etc. Her quizzes mostly come from the notes but sometimes are not. Her tests are hard and essay format.
Good teacher really knows her stuff. Make sure you go to class attendance is necessary to pass the class.
She grades really tough and the assignments can be difficult for a 1000 level course, and I find it ridiculous that she asked for 3 primary and 3 book sources on a 2-3 page biographical paper, about 1 person. Slides very vague, which is hard for an online. Also, instructions on assignments are unclear. Don't take her online; maybe her lecture.
Nice teacher. You can reach her by email easily. Can be cranky in the mornings so don't be disrespectful by talking during class, being late, or leaving early. Not too much homework, a few papers and a project. Tests can hurt you since they are moderately difficult - you definitely need to study and read the textbook. Try and you will do well.
When i signed for this class I thought it would be about movies but it was mostly a history lesson. She gives quizzes online, the questions come from her lecture and the book. Her tests are the same, multiple choice, identity terms, and essay question. She gives extra credit before each test even, and curves three point. I got B with no work.
The amount of work for this course goes beyond what you'd expect for a 1000 level course. The amount of reading is insane. You have to watch one film per week. She provides the films online, so that you don't have to pay to view them. I never watched entire films or did the readings, but still did well with the writing assignments.
For a 1000 level class, too much work. She expects you to watch a two hour movie each week and complete a 3-4 page paper on it. Ontop of 10 movies throughout the semester, you have forum posts and quizzes. Not to mention a "Final Exam" and a "Final Paper", which were both 10-page essays
I thought it was a super easy course. Online. Weekly movies and worksheets, occasional quizzes and discussions, two tests and a short paper. Super simple. All the work and films were relevant and enjoyable. Also, easy to reach by email.
Professor Deem is an amazing professor. She shows that she really cares about her students and she is not afraid to open the door and talk about things going on outside of school. She tells a lot of hilarious stories that either happened to her or happened to her friends. If you are wanting to take a LBST Glob Connections class, take her!
Deem was awesome! She's weird but in a good way. Her lectures are super engaging and no one ever packed up before she said class was over because they hung on every word. She leaves class off with a cliffhanger as to what happened next in history which makes you want to go to class. Very approachable. You can't slack off but I highly recommend!
Overall, I enjoyed this course, especially because it had an emphasis on history. If you are a history major, this is the LBST for you! However, because this was online you really need to be on top of things and can't slack off. There is a lot of reading along with films, so make sure that you have time to put effort in and to really focus!
Professor Deem rounded my grade up from a 79.19 to a B and I am so grateful. THANK YOU LYNNETTE. The G.O.A.T. Her class was a very nice pace for a gen ed. I never had to spend more than a few hours a week on it (100% online course). One small concern was the lack of feedback on grading discussions/essays. Other than that, I highly recommend!
I absolutely loved this class. I am NOT a History person and wasn't looking forward to this originally--but each of her lectures are like "story time." I felt like I was just listening to awesome stories and she is very open to hearing your opinion--not just what you think she wants to hear. She was kind, funny and made me love this subject!
Just a bad teacher. She blatantly gets historical facts wrong in front of the entire class and when you take the quizzes it contradicts her own presentations. She goes on these random skits, I'm trying to take a class not watch a play. Her grading is absolutely atrocious, she gives no responses for point deductions on her free response questions.
just show up to class and take good notes. Your notes you take in class you can use on the test! easy A. There are two books you have to read but they're both on spark notes so you'll be fine if you don't read the actual book. there are 3 test and the final is optional . the optional final can replace your lowest test score
Her lectures are very interesting and fun to listen to but there are very few assignments and the tests are graded horribly. All the questions are free response and if you don't say exactly what she wants you get points deducted. To me the good lectures are not worth her grading ability.
Usually 1 quiz every week. The quiz questions aren't straightforward and usually you can't find the answer on the power points or readings. Her canvas is so disorganized. The quizzes don't have due dates on canvas, only on the syllabus so you have to stay on top of it or you get a zero. I had to withdraw from this course. RARELY responds to emails.
She rambles... A LOT. And don't skip class, if you need to leave class early she'll call you out and ask why in front of the entire class regardless of how personal the reason is. She's not afraid to call you out and has a strong personality, but it is a really easy class so long as you take notes cause she doesn't post powerpoints on canvas.
Really enjoyed the class. Gave concise, but clear feedback on tests. Can be a bit easily side-tracked, but overall I thought it was an easy class - occasional online quizzes, sometimes surprise work in class. No text book and very little outside reading. Just show up, pay attention, take notes, take quizzes, take tests.
My major classes are easier than this LBST. Powerpoints and readings are unclear/thrown together at random. Graded mostly on discussion posts, which she grades HARD and doesnt explain why you got the grade. Posted a due date in canvas wrong FOR WEEKS and then blamed the students for not checking the syllabus by giving late grades. Worst class ever
Simple course - do some reading, view a power point, take a quiz or write a discussion - maybe both. Done for the week. Every time I asked for feedback she went above and beyond to provide it. If you don't ask or don't read the syllabus, you might struggle more. If you don't want to be responsible for you own success, probably take someone else.
I'll first start by saying this class wasn't online for half the semester, it was decent in person. But online is NOT the move. Professor Deem does not respond to emails and the slides she gives are unclear. Prepare to write and watch boring movies. Mostly boring, that is. A few interesting ones thrown in.
Completely inaccessible via email, responds after the assignment is due. Her slides are confusing and poorly constructed, dont bother attempting to correct her written mistakes.
Not a lot of work but a lot of discussion posts and essays. She doesn't give clear directions for essays. Powerpoints do not help with essays so except to look everything up.
No communication
Dont take this professor. She doesnt give clear instructions, she doesnt respond to emails and grades discussions very heavy.
You will have under 10 assignments all year that attack your grade negativity every single time even if you get a decent grade. She is horrible at communicating.
Doesnt answer emails, PowerPoints are useless, Discussion Question are open-ended, they seem opinionated but if you answer the way that she doesnt like then you will not receive a good grade. If you like to read, and be confused half of the semester this class is for you! But if you want to actually want to learn dont take this class.
I'm a little confused by the other feedback. I had no trouble with communication, but if you wait until the last minute to do things it'll be tricky. The assignments are easy, but you HAVE to follow directions (these are in the syllabus).
She is not capable of understanding the concerns of students, does not give clear feedback or deadlines, and assumes that two days to complete a heavy workload is enough. I would never suggest or wish a lazy, unprofessional, incompetent "professor" like Lynnette. Be ready to advocate for yourself and stand your ground. Very pathetic.
Absolutely no feedback is given for any grading. No instructions. A gen ed LBST should NOT be this stressful.
I seriously do not recommend this class. Very difficult and tough for an LBST. She never answers emails on time and never understands personal issues. Every module is posted late and she expects us to finish it all everytime. Only plus is her late-work policy
This professor requires no textbook, however gives assignments to complete based on terrible powerpoints she makes and will tell you not to use outside sources. Does not grade assignments on time, gives no feedback on grades and gives heavy assignments with less than a week to complete. Worst professor Ive had.
So terrible, should have dropped. You'll have 6 essays to write, 3 research projects, and 3 books to read. Not to mention the weekly readings and assignments. Changes due dates, very unclear, gave like 2 days to write the final exam essay (2-3pg). LBST should never be this insane. Avoid at all costs, seriously; it's a GPA killer.
Lazy, wasteful of your time, gives sorry excuses for not grading assignments, Doesnt post work on canvas until last minute, assumes no one has a life and requires to read books with no heads up, doesnt help with any work, PowerPoints have no quality information, gives research project week before its due on finals week along with final exam
Run don't walk from this professor. This course is an LBST that should be easy and maybe even a little fun if you like history but it will kill your GPA no matter how much effort you put in. She's an extremely tough grader who gives you an insane amount of busy work to do. Gives NO feedback on grades and uses terrible powerpoints to teach material.
Made what was supposed to be a fun and relatively easy class into the worst one I've ever had. Seems incredibly unsympathetic to any issues students may face. She said she wouldn't give study guides because it makes "lazy" students only to then focus her tests on things no one knew to study for, no multiple choice to all short response and essays.
Class was asynchronous online, so all materials were in Canvas. Much of it was just bulks of unnecessary information. She takes FOREVER to grade and also grades extremely tough with no feedback at all. Never seems to respond to her emails. This is ridiculously horrible for it to be a GenEd course, so I recommend taking another professor!
Professor Deem is a very tough grader. I did everything the assignment said and never seemed to get about a C or low B. Discussions have to be exactly to her standards and essays are long. Only good thing is quiz answers are on quizlet. I would not suggest taking this class.
She gives out lazy work and grades super rough. I always followed the instructions but nothing was ever good for her. I would try to email her for guidance but she always responded with a few sentences that didn't help at all. My advice, take a different class unless you want to work your hardest to only receive a bad grade.
Took three months to reply to my email.
She is not a terrible teacher. In fact I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures. My only complaint about her was how she did not respond to emails very well and the fact that her tests are all written response. However, that being said they are also open note so as long as you take notes during class you will be fine.
An incredibly talented and skilled educator. Loved the way she structured and she taught me that I wasn't stupid, that I could learn to take detailed.
It's asynchronous online class. She didn't reach out to us very often, but I found her to be easy to reach via email - and willing to excuse assignments or grant extensions when necessary. I have learned a lot from her this year!!
She makes the class incredibly difficult, almost as if she gets pleasure out of making questions really complicated. Take another professor if possible.
Great Lectures. She tried hard to make class fun with a variety of in-class assignments / work. She can be slow to respond to email, but her responses are always helpful and detailed. I enjoyed the class!
There is no reason why an Arts and Society film class most people take as a gen ed should be this hard. Such a harsh grader and for what, sorry to break it to you but no one actually cares. I tried and I still got a C, I just needed 3 more credits this semester and my gpa tanked.
