I was the first class that Lysa taught at DVC and she is amazing! Come to class with an open mind to the signing community and you will learn a lot. The entire class you are not allowed to talk which submerges you into the signing experience. Easy A, with extra credit offered. 3 exams, 2 papers, and one skit as your final. I'm taking her for sign 2
She is super funny! She comes off as tough at first but really has a soft heart if you have been putting in effort throughout and you need extra help or time. 100% would take her again and hope to have her in the future.
Learned a lot. Not very much homework except to study on your own. Great if you're interested in ASL and deaf culture, if not, could be a little boring.
I loved the class specifically because there is no talking allowed. As soon as you step in the classroom, you must sign. It's a very fun class and the teacher will make you laugh.
Lysa was awesome! I learned a lot about deaf culture in her class as well as now being able to understand sign language. She's really cool about letting people turn thing is but don't try to take advantage. She'll know. She is also willing to answer any question you have and repeat any sign you don't understand. She's also really funny.
Lysa is the best! She is incredibly nice and patient with new sign students. Her syllabus is pretty strict but the class is softer. She takes late work, no excuses needed. Test are really easy if you are participating in class and studying. There is homework through the textbook but its a breeze. HIGHLY recommend Lysa!
Lysa man, she'a the bomb diggity. This was the only class I really looked forward to every week. If you're serious about learning sign language then this is the class and she is the teacher for you. Otherwise, you might fall a bit behind because you will have to learn ALOT of signs. She's awesome, taking her again for sign 2.
lysa is an amazing teacher!! she's so funny and very cool. the tests are easy and ASL is the way to go if you're looking for an immersive, amazing language that is also pretty easy.
She is an amazing professor. Takes the time to make sure you truly understand. She is very helpful when help is needed, she is such an inspiration. Loved this class because of her
Lysa is one of the best professors that I have ever had. She genuinely cares about her students, and is super engaging and funny. Definitely don't skip class. New vocabulary is taught almost every class, but she goes over it many times and answers all questions clearly. Go to class, do all required work, and pay attention! Totally worth it.
She was incredible and such a fun and easy going person. If you go to class and participate there's no way you won't get an A. She makes learning ASL easy and she is hilarious. If you have the chance definitely take her!
Lysa is an outstanding teacher, really funny which makes the class more fun. She made the expierience of learning sign language so much better than i would have ever thought. Every class is fun and she is great at reviewing to make students confident for tests. love her favorite professor ever!
This professor was a joy to be in class with. She teaches ASL in a very immersive way and it helped me as a student. She is very funny and doesn't make things too serious, but she is very good at teaching the information. Coming out of this class, I have learned so much and I can't wait to use what I have learned.
The class in the summer goes fast but she really helps you learn and is super cool and funny about it.
I had the chance to be in Lysa's ASL 1 class and it was honestly such and amazing experience. She really cares about helping the students learn the material and overall is such a sweet lady. I cant wait to take her ASL 2 class.
Lysa was an amazing teacher who totally cares about the students learning the material. She made things really funny and had a great sense of humor while making sure we learned as well. The amount of homework left me more educated in sign language and helped me a ton. She taught at the perfect pace. I will definitely take her class again.
If you do your work and put effort into it, she gives you credit for it. The class is interesting and Lysa is really funny. Also, there is no talking inside the classroom, which really helps you learn.
Professor Lysa Russo is one one of the most humorous, fun-loving teachers you'll have at DVC.
If you want to have a great learning experience take this class. Lysa Russo is a caring, patient, funny lady, and a first class teacher. Sign 281 rocks!
Amazing class! There is easy classwork and homework due almost everyday. Also there is an attendance grade so missing class can harm you in quite a few ways. Tests are straight forward and on the material learned in class. If you put in some effort it is an easy A. Very enjoyable class and professor truly cares about her students. Would take again!
If you want to learn and have fun at the same time TAKE it with Lysa Russo this class is the only class I look forward to. She does give out a lot of homework but her tests are easy if you show up everyday you will earn participation points that go towards your grade. Only negative thing I have to say is she doesn't teach Sign three :(
This class is so much fun. You clearly have to show up to pass since its sign language. Light homework, professors really nice, understanding and funny.
She was amazing! I was nervous about having a class where we couldn't speak but it was great! She's very funny and does a great job of explaining material and answering any questions. The test are super easy as long as you practice! I'm taking her for sign 2!!
Lysa is fantastic! She is hilarious and understanding. She says it's hard to pass her class without doing the extra credit but everyone I talked to was doing well in the class. Only downside was that she assigns a lot of homework but she rarely collected it, unless it was a paper you had to type up. Do it all anyway though because it helps
Lysa is AMAZING! Even though she doesn't speak around her students, she is still so easy to talk to. The class has such a fun environment and I always looked forward to going to her class. She does assign a fair amount of work but always tells you when she's collecting the workbook pages. Tests are super easy. Can't wait for ASL 2 with her!
Such a great teacher! She obviously cares about both sign language and her students' progress. She assigns a lot of homework but doesn't collect it all; however, you should definitely do it all because it really helps understand the material taught in class. This is not a class to skip if you want to get a good grade, but you won't want to!
Lysa is such a great Teacher!!! You need the book for Homework but she sometimes doesn't collect. Although the homework really helps you remember the signs. She's hilarious and fun! For tests you watch her sign and you write down what she is signing! We had to do a skit but it was really fun, honestly no need to stress over the skit. She's Awesome
She is an amazing teacher you can not talk in class and if you plan missing class or not doing the work or anything do the deaf events they help a lot but I'm taking her again for sing language 2 she is funny amazing always there to help and we also have a tutor in the class if you need it new vocabulary every class so try not missing
I love taking her class at first I was nervous to take sign language but after the second week I loved going to her class ! She's a great teacher
I thoroughly enjoyed this semester. Try not to be late or miss class because you usually miss a lot. Since ASL is highly reliant on visual/repetition, it's important to show up to class as some words have multiple signs/meanings. Amazing teacher, makes learning a new language fun, and is available for office hours upon request. Highly recommend!
My first semester in Sign and I didn't know what to expect. Lysa inspired me to fall in love with the language. She is caring, extremely helpful, and highly respected. Couldn't as for a better instructor.
Lysa is super nice and responds to questions via her email usually within the day, she cares about what's going on in your life and will help if you start to fall behind or need further instruction. No talking in class but that should be expected of any sign language class. Lysa makes the class fairly simple, you just need to put in the work.
I loved Prof. Russo. She is hilarious and you can tell she genuinely loves what she teaches. Her class is super easy but you want to show up to learn the signs because you learn new vocab every class. There is homework, but very rarely does she ask you to turn it in, its more for your benefit.. you can't learn sign if you don't practice it.
I absolutely loved Mrs. Russo!! She is so much fun and really cares that people learn sign language. She is always there to ask questions and she makes very clear what she expects in class. I would love to have her again! If you need to take sign language, I highly recommend her!
Just took her class this spring! I really suggest everyone to take her class. She makes class fun and interesting everyday, and her tests were a lot easier than i expected!
Lysa was such a great professor! She was super helpful and understanding. There is homework but it's mostly just for credit. Make sure you go to class because you learn new vocabulary almost everyday. Would definitely take her class again!
She is a very caring professor and she makes lectures fun because of her sense of humor. I would take another class with her if she would teach the class I needed. Definitely a great professor. -A.O.
I was so intimidated to walk into class where speaking was prohibited, and learn sign language as if I could not hear. All fear went out the door the minute Lysa started teaching. She is thoughtful, measured and very funny. I thoroughly enjoyed her lesson and learned so much. You will truly be missing out if you don't take her class!
She is an amazing professor. This was my first time ever learning any sign language and she is extremely patient and nice. She will go over things with you if you don't understand. If you want a professor who is nice and is extremely intelligent in the subject they are teaching, this is the teacher. There is also extra credit if one would like.
You will learn a lot in this class every day and Lysa does a great job teaching. Book is expensive tho and for as much as we used it, I didn't think it was worth it. Workload is fairly light. PRACTICE is KEY. Tests are pretty easy as long as you've been keeping up with the vocab. The group project is a fun skit so don't fret. Plays fun games too.
Lysa was probably my favorite teacher this semester! She super understanding and you can tell she loves what she does so it makes learning sign language so much better! If I ever get the chance to take her again I will or Ill just tell all my friends to take her, whichever comes first!
Lysa is incredible. Most dynamic, entertaining and enriching class I've taken in a while. You'll be immersed in Deaf culture. Heads up - you sort of pick a practice partner on day one. You can get away with a couple of absences, but it's best to email her about it and DEFINITELY make up the homework. She's very lenient about half/partial credit.
Russo, Lysa. This professor was top tier if i do say so myself and im proud to say that, yes!, she was indeed my professor. She was a real one and i just want to take a moment to say that Lysa was one of my favorite professors and she will be missed. She's not dead though, she just is a radical human being and deserves nice things to say about. :)
You're just super cool
Lysa Russo was such an awesome teacher. I am walking away from ASL 1 being able to sign full sentences and actually hold a conversation. I have wanted to take ASL for some time so this class was perfect. Lysa is funny and really helpful. There is a lot of papers to turn in so don't miss a class. Plus great material to learn!! I really enjoyed her!
If you're going to take ASL I highly recommend you take Ms. Russo! I'm so glad I chose her because she makes learning very fun & easy! The tests are also very easy all you have to do is show up to class everyday & pay attention.
If you're going to take ASL I highly recommend you take Ms. Russo! I'm so glad I chose her because she makes learning very fun & it's very easy to pass her class.
One of the best teachers I have had. Makes class very fun and enjoyable. She makes sure her students understand the material and answers any questions that you might have. A lot of vocabulary but if you practice you will succeed in her class.
Ms. Russo is an exceptional teacher. You can tell she really cares about the success and longevity of her students ASL careers.
If you're going to consider taking sign language, Ms. Russo is a MUST. Her class is easy and fun. She is HILARIOUS and it's not hard at all to follow along with her instructions. Not talking in the class is easy and learning about deaf culture is very interesting.
I learned sign language, & about the Deaf Culture as well. Inspiring . So glad I was blessed with Professor Lysa Russo. I enjoyed learning sign language from her. I was told not to take certain ASL instructors, , so glad for that advice, I might not have ended up in her class. I will take ASL next summer, with her again ASL #1. Thank you
She was really friendly and funny. Shes clear and slow so you don't miss anything. the test are super easy if you study and the games are fun. You learn tons of vocab but not really full sentences.
She teaches the class with Shama, her deaf friend, and they're hilarious together. She makes learning ASL so fun- it's a lot of vocab, but tons of practice in class.
She is a great teacher! I learned so much in her class and she made class interesting and fun. Definitely would recommend taking ASL with her!
Great Teacher! Both ASL Sign 280 & 281
Great intro to ASL in her class. Lots of vocabulary, but just as many opportunities to practice. Signs slow enough and clearly. Will always clarify if needed. Attendance is super important! Could miss big chunks of vocabulary and practice if absent. Activities in class usually handed in on the same day for credit. Fun class to be in overall.
By far one of the best classes I've ever taken! The teacher is amazing and she makes the class very fun. She also is very easy to "talk" to and makes me want to come to class. Definitely recommend!
Lysa is honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. She has a great personality which helps keep you intrigued. The notes for vocabulary can become tedious but it is easy to catch up. Learning vocab and practicing is very important for your exams so attendance can really hurt your grade if you skip. A fantastic teacher to start learning ASL!
she is amazing highly recomended
This was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I always left with a smile on my face because she is so funny and it is always a fun time in her class. You do learn a lot and I would recommend this class to anyone interested in ASL! :)
Tons of extra credit opportunities, not a harsh grader for the homework. easiest way to lower your grade is miss a class, but you can look up info you miss online, or tutoring is available..
I like class with her, was a fair teacher. She was nice I recommend to not be absent every class counts.
Professor Russo is the Awesome! She's funny, super nice and understanding and the majority of the class is just making sure u show up and stay on task. Loved every minute of that class and cant wait to take ASL2 with her. The class is entertaining, engaging and there is no talking in the class which makes it all the more fun:). BEST TEACHER EVER!!
Shes an easy teacher and loves to entertain. I would recommend to rent the work book and photo copy the pages cause there was very few times that we actually collected homework. But overall, its a super fun class and a great language to pick up. She makes the class a lot more fun and is willing to help!
Lysa was amazing! She was always in a good mood, made class fun, and it's obvious she loves what she does. Tests are pretty easy if you've been paying attention. Taking her again for ASL II !!!
shes a great professor, very understanding and funny.
The class is taught exclusively in sign language which is so helpful to learn. Lysa is very caring and patient with students. Will definitely take Sign II with her.
Russo is a great personality and an awesome teacher. This class is relatively easy so you should pass it if you just pay attention, show up to class, and do your work. Her work is fun and she's willing to answer questions whenever she's asked.
I love how understanding and accessible Lysa and Shama were inside/outside of class. If you take this class, do not skip any days because you will miss a lot of vocab and it can be difficult to catch up on. Plenty of opportunities for points as well as extra credit. I am taking lysa again, and this class is a definite recommend.
Shes amazing, sweet and cool. She has a well structured class. Everyday start with new vocab, she teaches it, and then practice with partners. As long as you practice vocab, you can pass. Tests are easy if you know the vocab. Vocab is everything. Really fun to learn. Her class is very enjoyable. She doesnt talk, but shes easy to understand
Professor Russo is the BEST! She is very understanding, she is passionate. This class is easy if you practice your signs outside of class and you do the homework assignments. You are required to go to at least 2 deaf events and write about your experience. there are about 4 Essays. there will be group projects and presentations. Best class!
The papers she assigns are short but kind of difficult to stretch out. Not too much homework though, shell let you know what homework she actually collects.
This is the second time I take Ms. Russo and she is the best professor ever! She is so sweet and a great teacher. Her class is so easy and fun I highly recommend her.
She is great! I still have 2 days of summer class but I enjoyed this class. Shes funny always joking around in ASL. I was skeptical at first because the syllabus she seemed very stern but after taking the class i see otherwise. Shes very organized and prepares you for the test. Dont miss class because you learn a bunch in one day.
I love her! She is hilarious without saying any words. I would love it if she was my teacher for every class!!
Lysas class is a learning environment where you are forced to pick up the language fast.
She is a really funny teacher and she is really nice to
make sure not to miss a day or youll be so confused when the next test comes around. Catch up on work ASAP
11/10 would recommend. Her funny personality makes the class enjoyable. She is a very helpful teacher and I would definitely take her class again!
I really liked this class and the professor, i will definitely come back to have her again for another class! She was very funny and teaches well.
Learned so much in this intense summer class! Lysa is a great, patient teacher who seems really invested in her students learning ASL. She is very approachable and helpful. I am amazed with her ability to teach students on such a broad range of abilities, and make class fun! Would definitely recommend her as a teacher!
She was a great teacher. I was able to learn sign language quickly while enjoying the class at the same time. I can conversate with others using sign language.
Amazing professor! I would definitely be her student again!
I took Lyssa Russo for 280 and 281! She is an amazing professor and is well-respected by all her students. Hacks: DO NOT SKIP CLASS (New Vocab Every Class. Impossible to catch-up), Do not buy other Textbooks except SN (Use 1x or 2x), BUY Signing Naturally (SN) WB (You will be using this for homework every class. Try to rent or buy), and HAVE FUN!
Lysa was an awesome ASL teacher. This is my first ratemyprofessor, and she deserves all high praises. I took this as a summer 6 weeks course, and we did not waste any time. What I truly appreciate about her on top of being a very caring professor, she is very clear with what she expects for her students to do. I hope to take her class again!!!
Lysa is one of the most caring teachers ive had at DVC. I took ASL 1&2 with her and wish she taught the next courses. ASL itself can be hard its a whole other language you are learning. She tries to make it as easy as possible she is very helpful. Don't skip class or else you'll fall behind! if you're interested in ASL TAKE LYSA YOU WONT REGRET IT
I took ASL 1 & 2 with Lysa. She is approachable and easy to get along with. She & Shama, who helps teach the class, have a cute sense of humor. There is no talking at all in class, only sign language, which helps you absorb faster. She assigns homework every so often from the textbook/ responses to online videos/ and deaf events. Loved it!
Lysa is an awesome ASL teacher! I was so excited to take sign language, and Lysa made learning ASL so fun and easy. Just show up to the class andpractice your signs at home and you will pass. Although you dont talk in class, Lysa is really funny. If youre signing up for ASL take it with Lysa. I cant wait for SIGN281 with her in the spring!
Lysa and Shama are beautiful people. I took sign 280 with them and 281 and they help out so much and teach you so much while making class fun! It's impossible to find this class boring. Lysa offers extra credit and the tests are easy if you pay attention in class. If she sees you're trying she helps you out so much.
Kind and fun
I had Lysa for ASL 1 and 2, she was amazing. Shes really good if your new to ASL, signs clearly. good at responding to emails if you have questions. plenty of extra credit. Class is note heavy and somewhat homework heavy, but nothing to stress over. Textbook required with DVD for signing lectures. If she taught ASL 3 and 4 i would take her again.
Lysa is an incredible ASL teacher! She makes the entire process of learning a new language easy and fun. The class is immersive, but she keeps humor throughout the classes to make it easier to enjoy. Ive never loved a class like I do for hers
I have taken ASL 1 & 2 with Lysa and she was great and made class fun. Although you do have to learn a lot of new vocal daily and turn in classwork/hw on time, Lysa and Shama are always very helpful. Textbooks required and deaf events are mandatory plus she offers extra credit for attending more. Definitely recommend taking her class!
She is an amazing teacher! You do have to be in class because each day is a graded class assignment. Shes so funny and cares deeply about ASL culture and her students.
She makes learning ASL so much fun! There are a lot of vocabulary words to learn how to sign, but she is very passionate about it and it rubs off on her students. Overall a great experience!
Professor Russo is easily one of my favorite teachers I have had within my 3 years at DVC. She is incredibly helpful and kind. She offers plenty of extra credit and will help you in any way possible for you to achieve the grade you deserve. HIGHLY recommended. -Brady :)
She is helpful, kind, and super entertaining. It can be hard to memorize a bunch of signs (words), but she dedicates a bunch of class time to practicing with neighbors and assigns creative ways of doing so. Most homework is optional but strongly recommended. It's an easy A if you are there for 90% of class.
Very good sign teacher. Comes off tough at first but is very nice and caring as the semester goes on. Lots of opportunity for points during classtime and she is very good at teaching the material.
Lysa is really sweet and funny. Fun class. it's really hard to prepare for tests, since she doesn't provide us with any source to refer to. I wish she would put up videos of herself signing the vocabularies for each unit. Attendance is really important because she posts 2-3 grades each class based on the activities that we had that day.
She is funny, caring, and an easy grader. Do your work, be respectful, LOTS OF STUDENT INTERACTION! Don't be shy! Practice practice! I would take her class again in a heartbeat, very funny! Remember what she tells you about herself, pops up on tests, its helpful! Tests are not hard if you practice and participate. She is very articulate, wonderful!
Be ready for test, What I majored: physical education , education , math, engineering
Profesor Russo gave me the best ASL 1 class, I got to learn a lot from her, she is funny, you must do the deaf event
She is hilarious and so kind. She is very caring and just one of the best teachers ever. I wish I could have her for ASL 2. She teaches well and the homework is easy. Her class is very fun.
SHE IS AMAZING!!! I LOVE HER!!!! Shes my favorite professor so far! She is hilarious and makes learning a new language so much more fun to learn. I would definitely want to have her again without a doubt! Shes a amazing person who is so understanding and is so funny! BLESS YOUR SOUL MS. RUSSO!!!!
She is really funny and kind. We played a few games in sign language and I really enjoyed it. Honestly, if u do every assignment and get at least at 30/40 on her tests, you will get an A. She shared her life with us and you could tell she care about you too because she asked you if everything was ok if you looked tired. I would highly recommend!!!
Taking this class was quite enjoyable--immersive. Adding her personality, amazing professor. The participation is a MUST. Do not expect to get good results if it is lacking.
I absolutely love this professor. I took sign 280 and Im currently taking sign 281. During her course I was so immersed with sign language. She provides a fun and positive learning environment, while simultaneously being extremely productive and on task. I would 10/10 recommend anyone of any age to take this course with this professor.
Prof Russo is very passionate about sign language and she makes sign language so fun and easy to learn. The canvas page of this class is very organized, and you could find the videos of her signing the vocabularies. I would suggest practicing the signs after class as well, for it helps a lot to memorize them.
She is an awesome professor and she is very helpful. She makes ASL fun and exciting to learn. I already signed up for her ASL2 class for the summer and I can't wait!
