Makes you do a useless research paper in which she actually reads through your sources and tries to find places in your paper where you haven't paraphrased well enough. Claims sentences are plagerized that really aren't. Didn't learn much from her.
most useless class ever. stay away, she's a horrible professor. makes NOTHING clear. notes are not helpful. her ability to explain stats was non-existent. the labs were the most helpful and she didn't teach those.
She's a dynamic lecturer and the class was easy, but I don't know if I like her or not
Porter is bent taking away psychology's only fuction at W&M: handing out easy A's. Grading is unclear, attitude is pompous, and class is as stressful as it is worthless. Porter should go back where she came from CNU/VCU. Whatever. Maybe someone could actually LEARN something from her there.
she did not explain anything well and when asked to explain a concept she would be vague and unhelpful. labs were the most useful thing about the class and she didn't teach them.
Alright...stats is an easy class- that is the ONLY reason you will get through it! She is the worst teacher I have ever had here, PERIOD! I still say take stats, but avoid her if possible!
TERRIBLE PROF!!! Extremely unhelpful and arrogant. Should not be teaching at W&M.
Damn Porter is getting rocked in here. I can't really say much seeing as i went to the class 4 times. 3 for tests, but I got an A... she seemed fine to me. EASY A. the 4's I just added cause i felt bad for her.
Funny. Clear powerpoints. Entertaining in- class demonstrations of psychological principles. You learn a lot and she makes it easier to learn. Multiple choice tests are not too tough and the reviews are helpful.
I think she's funny and usually interesting to listen to.
Porter is the worst professor I've had at W&M. She spends more time showing videos and doing incomprehensible demonstrations than actually teaching. She is rude, smug, and arrogant, and seems to take pleasure in lowering students' GPA's. Avoid her at all costs.
This class is easy. Just know the stuff on the review sheets and you'll get an easy A. She does a good job engaging such a large class and if you email her she is prompt in responding. Very clear about what she wants and expects. Very straight-forward and doesn't beat around the bush.
Does a good job at engaging a very large class. Provides helpful study guides, and exams aren't cumulative in her lower level classes. She's arrogant and tends to be suspicious of her students, but class isn't bad.
I had Porter at 8 AM and she still managed to get everyone to come to class, even after telling us we didn't ever have to come. She really knows her stuff and her tests are easy. Take Porter for Social
Right...so maybe she has gotten better since the first comments were made. I think she is a decent enough prof., and I actually showed up for the class so I can talk. Wouldn't say that it is an "easy" A anymore, though; I know plenty of people who usually went to class and still got B's or C's.
Wow...this was an easy class. The prof is super nice, and actually has interesting lectures with neat demonstrations. If you have questions, she is ready to help you, and her review sheets are golden. Do the extra credit, and this is an easy A.
Prof. Porter seemed cool at first but turned out to be a little scary. Her class was pretty good but she is a little abrasive.
Easiest class I've taken at WM, bar none. Forgot to answer 1/4 of one test and still came out of the class with a B+ with no studying.
Porter is amazing. She uses examples and explains everything. Probably one of the best teachers we have at W&M. I would recommend her to ANYONE! I'm not even interested in Pysch and I loved her.
She's a great professor and teaches well. Class is always interesting and there are good discussions. Tests cover a large amount of material, but study enough and you'll do fine. However, I think she's opinionated and sometimes abrasive. She has a funny, sarcastic sense of humor but can be condescending at times. Overall a good pick.
Out of the psych profs I've had here, she's definitely one of the best. Her notes and tests are very straightforward, and the material isn't overwhelming. The research paper kind of sucks, but she breaks it into parts so it's manageable. If you study, I don't see how you wouldn't get an A.
After a semester of social psych with Ventis, she was a WELCOME break. Very clear with the lectures, kept my attention, one of my favorite classes last semester even if it was a 300 person lecture. She makes the material very understandable and provides examples of the more difficult concepts so they're easy to understand. GREAT study guides.

Nice person, "ok" professor. her study guides tend to be very confusing and incoherent, lots of in-class discussions, paper assignments are kind of annoying, yet manageable. she focuses more on her powerpoint slides than on the textbook. I believe you can still get a B without buying the book if you pay attention to her lecture. Not a hard grader.
I loved her so much! She was very helpful and nice. Her class was very interesting and you don't have the read the book at all to pass the test. Just pay attention to the powerpoint. The tests are fair and if you know everything on the study guide, you're golden.
Very nice, knows her stuff, but lectures are not always clear. You can refer to the text to clarify things or ask, but you don't really need to read the text as long as you take good notes on her powerpoints and know those well. Tests not too hard, paper not too bad. Fairly easy overall.
This class was very interesting and very easy, but she might be the WORST professor I have EVER had! She's AWFUL! I dread every class and refuse to talk to her. However, the class IS really easy, so I wouldn't advise against it- just be WARNED!
I had professor Porter for Psyc as a Natural during summer school. I went into class hoping I would like psychology, and thus major in it and with Professor Porter that was certainly the case. She is very knowledgable and presents the material in a way so that it is entertaining, fun, and interesting. Def need to read the book and study, though.
i've had her for 2 classes and as far as psych professors go, she's good. she's very fair when it comes to exams and grades and takes student opinions into account. very approachable.
Super intelligent, but just not one of those people who get how to teach effectively. Goes way too fast on powerpoints. I learned most about the subject the night before the test via study guide than I ever did during class trying to keep notes straight. Papers were stressful.
Porter is usually friendly and helpful and knows how to make class interesting and fun (considering it's all powerpoints). However, she's easily irritable; don't get on her bad side.
Professor Porter is great in class and cares very deeply about students' opinions regarding tests and teaching style.
She tries to get to know everyone, she loves to hear what she can do to make the class better and she is simply the most caring woman ever. I completely recommend this class.
Prof Porter cares so much about her subject and about you as her student. I was often embarrassed that she put in so much more effort than we did. Her tests aren't too demanding, but if your peers have trouble with them, she'll make the next ones easier. Often has tiny extra credit tidbits/extra points for attendance. An incredible educator.
Cares a LOT about how students are doing in the class, uses a lot of real-world examples, always willing to help, always wanted to make sure we really understood things completely. An incredible teacher; I'd be glad to have her again.
Intro as Natural: One of the best classes I have taken at W&M. Extremely open to student opinions, helpful and approachable. Class is interesting, and her passion for her students and subject made it an enjoyable experience. 4 out of 5 stars.
I took my Freshman seminar with her. She is extremely picky about what she expects in assignments, but cares so much about her subject and the students. Several times I came to her office because she had complaints about a paper of mine and we ended up talking for a long time. No one cares as much about their students as her.
Had to give her a chili pepper because she has a gorgeous personality. Prof Porter is very kind, caring and knowledgeable. I can't wait to take more courses with her. She works incredibly hard and nothing seems like too much work. She is open to opposing views on topics and is in no way judgmental. Prof. Porter is highly respectable.
Amazing professor! Attendance was not mandatory, but Prof. Porter's lectures and passion for the subject motivates you to go to class. Integrates videos and interesting examples into class material. Took two classes with her and would take many more! Highly recommended!
Great instructor. It speaks volumes that this class has (possibly) the highest attendance of anything I took this semester despite attendance being optional and the slides being posted. She explains things well, strongly encourages people to ask questions if they need it, and clearly cares a great deal about the students. Highly recommended!
Amazing professor, most interesting lectures I've had in any class. Even though attendence is not mandatory, you will want to go to class because of her great lectures.
Somewhat rude. Does not give full credit on the exam if the answer was not her exact wording--several of my correct answers had points deducted because I had re-worded the definitions. Does not accept examples on her exam even though she spends about 50% of her lectures talking about examples? Give me a break.
She tries hard to be a good teacher, but is just average. Not helpful during office hours. Study guides are overwhelming (basically an in-depth outline of everything she had mentioned in lectures). Easy A if you attend lectures and read the material. I wasn't impressed and will not go out of my way to take another class with her.
Porter got me interested in a subject that I may pursue in my lifetime studies. She is an excellent professor and all around a caring, engaging human being. The class itself is never boring, and though the tests are difficult, they are not impossible. Don't expect to BS the class.
Attendance is not mandatory, but she won't post the videos shown in class on blackboard, so you should really attend class for your own sake. Prof. Porter's lecture is really interesting. She's caring, funny, and knows her stuff. Her test format is a mixture of MC, short answer, and essay. Make sure you participate in class.
Great Professor. Lectures are very interesting and her tests can be easy if you got to class, study the notes, and glance over the reading. Sarcastic but funny. Will take another class with her next semester!
Honestly the best prof I've had at W&M. This was my second class with her. Her tests are difficult, but she makes it VERY clear what you need to know for them. Go to class--she tests from lecture, not the text. Besides, her lectures are always amusing. She knows her Psych, and she can teach anything. If you have a chance to take her, do it!
At first for some reason i thought she would be very strict and tough as a prof. While she has her policies (attendance/participation) she is a great teacher that makes the subject interesting easy and clear. Her tests are very easy if you prepare and have gone to class. Highly recommended if your interested in Cog sci/psych and want a good GPA
Cog Science. Pretty easy class- she teaches from the lectures. You don't really need to read the book, i didn't. She's nice and the class is interesting most of the time. Can't say I learned all that much, but maybe it's due to the bouncing around nature of the course
Awesome and interesting class, Porter does a great job making it clear even for those who are not neuroscience or computer science people.
Very condescending. Professor Porter is obviously very intelligent and knows the material very well. However, her tests are unnecessarily difficult. Although they are multiple choice, nearly every question has either "all of the above" or "none of the above" as an option. Material on the test includes things mentioned only very briefly in class.
Prof. Porter is very intelligent and clear. I was in a class of 300 people, but she still interacted with us, so the class felt much smaller. The tests are fair; I never read the text book and still got a B. Go to class, because she'll give extra credit if you're there the day after an exam or before a vacation.
Cog Sci. Took it during summer. A LOT of reading, mostly very interesting. A lot of discussions, takes off points if you don't speak up so HAVE to read and participate in discussions! 3 take home exams, pretty hard. She's a good prof but moved TOO fast most prob b/c it was summer. Interesting class overall!
I've taken 3 classes with Porter and each one has been GREAT! She is very knowledgeable in a lot of areas of psychology so she can teach just about anything. She also loves discussion and encourages her students to form their own opinions rather than just following hers.Speak up, go to class, know the PowerPoints, and you will do well in her class!
I love her! She is the funniest prof I've had, but she's never too far off-topic. She is knowledgeable about her subject and is great about answering questions both in/out of class. She's picky about details, but the tests only cover material discussed in class. She puts the notes online but I would recommend going to class anyway for the videos.
She's such a great person and lecturer. BUT 1) she covers a LOT of material each class 2) her tests are difficult. Her tests are pretty much all short answer/paragraph form, so studying for her tests even longer than necessary is required if you want a good grade.
Porter is a very intelligent, approachable woman who is sincerely interested in Psych & wants her students to do well. GO TO CLASS because she says a lot that isn't directly on the power points. She is clear about what will be on the exam, but her exams are really hard. You have to KNOW the material. Work hard and you'll be fine.
Porter is awesome. For a lecture class with nearly 300 people, she does a good job of being entertaining and keeping your attention. She's also willing to answer any questions you have after class time is over. Exams aren't easy, don't expect an A in the class.
Prof Porter is a really nice lady! She is tough about what she expects, and can sometimes be ambiguous, but she nonetheless is helpful in getting you on the right page of things. definitely go to the lecture, definitely pay attention in class. Porter is really good at keeping the class engaged. Tests can be challenging but are doable.
Porter is a wonderful professor who clearly loves her job and the subject matter she teaches. As long as you go to class and pay attention, you can easily do well on her exams. My only criticism is that while her tests are scantron, multiple choice, she took up to 2 weeks to tell us our grades..
Porter knows how to entertain and effectively teach to a large audience (almost 300) of mostly non-majors with fun demonstrations and funny stories. Tests are not bad and are all MC. She is good at letting you know about due dates and information that will and won't be on tests. Recommend her highly for anyone needing a GER2 natural science
Class is interesting, but the tests suck. Harder than they should be, and always cover random information that's outside her lectures.
Very easy class, but be prepared to teach yourself from the text book. Also it takes her forever to give back results from a test.
Interesting lectures. Tests asked about lots of small details
Porter did a good job holding the attention of the class for a lecture hall. However, she did not welcome you to ask questions, and her emails frequently seemed to speak down to you. Tests were alright, seemed easy, but then the class average would be a C+ or B-. She says info from the textbook isn't on the test, but it actually is.
Slowest grader ever. Gave contradictory explanations when put on the spot in class. Huge ego. The content of the course was really interesting though.
Three multiple choice exams in this class. Study the slides over reading the book as most of the questions are based on in class notes. Attend and recieve extra credit at times. Grades may be slow but the grades for finals came out the next day. She is friendly during office hours. If you are lost you should talk to her.
She has a great personality and is genuinely friendly. Her tests are not bad if you study well. The Final was more difficult then the other tests even though it was not cumulative. When she says memorize all of the parts of something listen but expect less than half to actually be tested on. Overall, a good choice for a class.
Ive just started the class but I can say that.she moved two of her classes in order to make room for more kids. No other teacher I have had has done this. Now I can graduate on time. So I think she is awesome
You must listen to and write down EVERY WORD SHE SAYS IN CLASS. There is nothing from the book on the tests, it is 100% from what she talks about in class. If you do this and study it thoroughly, you will do well. She tries to be funny and nice but really does not care at all about her students.
I thought she was a great professor, though a lot of my friends didn't think so. Most people thought she went to fast through the material, but I thought it was a good pace.
extremely helpful and engaging with her students in class. She actively makes sure that she is teaching the material well. Will spend a long time on one subject to make sure that everyone understands. Uses great examples to teach concepts. Tests are not difficult...completely from her lectures (she posts her powerpoints). Definitely recommend
Professor Porter is an engaging lecturer. Her tests are not hard at all as long as you go to lecture and write down what she says. The tests are mainly based on her lectures. While she is a good lecturer, her personality is a bit intimidating and she won't always make time for you.
Maybe professor Porter was just having a bad semester, but she sure wasn't the professor everyone raves about. Completely unclear and let those who speak up in class just for the sake of hearing their own voice dominate and confuse discussion. We didn't get to a month's worth of content. Very kind to accommodate 30 more students, though.
Great professional professor. She is crystal clear on what she expects you to know for tests, and her tests are tough but fair. Phys psych is great with Professor Porter!
Porter is clear on her expectations and pretty fair on her exams, which are challenging. It is really frustrating though how she gets off topic and cannot adhere to the syllabus. she simply abandons topic and pulls it from the exam, which is fine, unless you enjoy that kinda topic of phys psyc. ppts are also vague and hard to study from
Porter is extremely clear with her expectations for the class. You have 3 Exams. Never read the textbook nor studied for more than a couple of days and still got a B in the class. This lack of textbook usage and clarity are staples of Porter classes. She also gives EXTRA CREDIT!
Porter is extremely helpful and willing to answer questions! She is brilliant and on top of her game when teaching. Her exams were a mix of easy and extremely difficult. Based mostly on lecture with little book use. Offered extra credit which was very nice. Engaging and entertaining, I would take another class with her.
I wasn't at all interested in the topic and I'm still not, but she's a great professor-- the material is clear and she presents it in an entertaining way. Exams are straightforward.
I hear raving reviews about Professor Porter, and while she is extremely helpful and has a great sense of humor, in general I find her lectures to be extraordinarily boring. Reads off the slides, which she posts. Tests range from decent to weirdly difficult.
I've had this professor a total of 3 times. I'm not sure if she was having a bad semester or something, but I found her lectures to be hard to follow and the tests to be extremely vague. If you take her in a class of 50 or more, the tests are MC. If it's smaller there will be vague fill in the blanks. I would recommend taking 317 with another prof.
The exams in this class are based ENTIRELY on lectures (which tend to be really dense and dry) so if you get distracted and miss something she says, may your GPA rest in peace.
Behavior Mod with Porter is a pretty good class. Mostly discussion based. Kind of disorganized and we seemed to decide what the class format would be throughout the semester. Take home exams weren't so bad. The self-modification project was kind of tedious, but the research proposal project is interesting if you choose a good topic.
I love Dr. Porter! She is one of the best professors that I have ever had. She is amazingly nice and a very intelligent person. Highly recommend taking any and all classes with her.
Porter is the best! She really wants all her students to succeed and is always helping kids in office hours. Take advantage of all the "perks" that come with the class -- take home exams, study guides, etc. You HAVE to take her if you ever do Psych, though I hear she's much tougher in intro courses than in upper level ones.
There are 3 non-cumulative tests (MC + short answer). She doesn't take attendance and posts ppts online, but you will wanna attend class, since the ppts make no sense without class notes, and sometimes she gives extra credit for attendance. She's funny, clear, very willing to listen to your ideas, but a little unorganized.
Attending class is a MUST because her lectures are mainly what are on the test. I did well on the first two tests. I attended EVERY class except for blowout which hurt me on the final because she included a ton of new information from that day : Not an easy class
Great intro class for a GER. Not too difficult, lectures are interesting, and the tests are clear-cut as long as you take good notes. I think she's one of the most engaging lecturers at William & Mary.
Professor Porter is an exemplary professor at William and Mary. She is an extremely dedicated teacher and practically runs the psychology department. She's really into the material. Her tests are very strait forward (there are 3 and the final is non cumulative!!) She lectures quickly but will stop any one of her students. No ones ?s are overlooked
This was Dr. Porter's first time teaching Psychopharm. I think she did a great job teaching the material and her passion for the subject was apparent. The only negative things I can say are that she is a bit scattered/disorganized, and doesn't really stick to the grading scheme or outline from the syllabus. Other than that, not a hard class at all!
As a neuro major, Dr. Porter has consistently been the professor I learn from the most in classes. Info-packed classes are the norm, but she can get a little off-schedule. Usually makes it up in the last couple weeks, so don't stop attending. Mostly used lecture notes not text. Open to intelligent questions + outside discussion-- but remind her!
Physiological Psych--Great teacher and keeps her lectures interesting. Grades on 3-4 non-cumulative multiple-choice exams, and the class includes an on-going individual "portfolio" project that is actually pretty cool and helps you learn how a research paper is formulated. No textbook assigned. Can get a little off topic but still very informative
Very unorganized professor. Must go to class to get an A, as the notes she posts online are never complete. She never follows her schedule, so prepare to not come away with a great understanding of material. She's very nice and enthusiastic, and her exams aren't very difficult. Perfect for trying to fulfill a requirement.
Having Porter as the professor has been a frustrating experience. The notes she teaches from are disorganized, and she makes it difficult to know what exactly will be tested. She's constantly late to classes, and it always feels as though her lectures aren't fully organized quite yet. She makes it difficult to learn any of the material.
Engaging Class, not too hard. Porter was good, not amazing but very good
Professor Porter was always willing to help me and even remembered my name (out of a 200 person class). She cares about her students succeeding. My high school focused a lot on writing and not so much on multiple choice. All of Porter's exams are multiple choice with between 60-70 questions.
I found this class much easier than 202, but probably because the material was much more interesting. The lectures are very interesting and easy to understand, but only if you attend class. Attendance is a must, or else the ppts will not be easy to understand. If you take notes and pay attention, it is an easy A.
Prof Porter is incredibly interesting and makes her lectures interesting. She's kind of disorganized and talks really fast, so it's easier to take notes on a laptop. Your only grades are 3 60-70 question tests, so you have to come to class to understand her powerpoints, or you won't do well.
Doctor Porter is the best professor I have had at W&M. She is the head of the neuroscience department, so really does know what she's talking about. She is a brilliant woman and caring educator. You must go to class and I'd recommend a computer because she does talk fast, but is more than willing to repeat. 3 easy multiple choice tests.
She's a really great professor. Her tests are very reasonable. It's definitely possible to do well in this class with some effort. She gives clear notes and is willing to explain things throughly to help people understand. I wish I took more of her classes.
We had phenomenal discussions in this class. Professor Porter loves to hear students' thoughts and insights and is one of the most caring professors out there. If you are able to get into her Psychology of Drug Use class. Take it.
For a lecture-based class with nearly 200 people, Porter does an excellent job at keeping her students engaged. She is very willing to go over exams and counsel you if you need help in the class. She also puts up the "religious holidays" of different cultures on her presentations, which is very thoughtful.
Her class could be summed up by a few crash course YouTube videos. She's disorganized (she literally didn't make enough exams one time and left 25 students examless for half an hour). Her tests have weirdly specific questions on it about videos in class. She doesn't show up on time for class or meetings.
Lectures are interesting and generally easy to understand. Lots of videos that she only shows in class, which make their way onto the exams. 3 exams and a short COLL200 assignment. If you study, it's not too hard to do well on the exams, especially if you pay attention in class. She makes sure to really go over concepts that will be on the exams
Although she can be a bit disorganized at times, she only tests on what is taught.
Prof. Porter is absolutely hilarious and makes a lecture-heavy class engaging and bearable. 3 non-cumulative exams (including final) and one quick-and-easy assignment are the only grades, so make sure you study for the exams. If you take good notes on her lectures, exams won't be hard at all. But be warned: she can be a bit disorganized.
Porter is hilarious and makes a lecture-heavy class fly by. 3 non-cumulative exams and one assignment are the only grades. She can be a bit disorganized, but she presents all of the info you will need for exams during lectures. Would definitely take a class with Porter again.
Please take her! You learn so much and she takes her students very seriously.
Drug Use is an awesome Coll 150!! Prof. Porter is really nice and relaxed. Super interesting readings and class discussions, but be prepared to share your thoughts/opinions in class. Three unit exams - 3 page essay to answer a question. One final research paper, which takes some time, but Prof. Porter is accessible and willing to assist. No final.
If you want an easy semester, DON'T take this class. She's difficult to reach outside of class, doesn't help when you go to office hours, and will test you on videos but not allow you to access the links outside of class ever so you have to show up. This class was very confusing and I wish I could've dropped it sooner.
I didn't expect to like this class, but I really did. She's smart, funny, and easy-going, and welcoming to discussions and questions. The 3 exams were pretty hard and detail-oriented with some MC and a lot of short answers. We also had to do 5 out of 10 one-page essay responses over the semester but they were easy.
What a fascinating class. We covered everything from the philosophy of mind to neuroscience and AI. Porter gave interesting lectures that weren't just copied and pasted from the textbook. There were five 1 page reflections and three very detailed and somewhat tricky exams, but easy A's if you study and pay attention in class.
Prof. Porter liked to talk quickly during class without repeating important terminology you need to know for the exams. She puts up study questions for the exam that would be helpful if she didn't wait until the night before to put them up. She is extremely disorganized so if you like to be prepared for exams, dont take her class.
She was my favorite professor this semester. Very professional and knowledgeable, and kept her lectures interesting! Your whole grade comes from testing, the coll 200, and research so if you dont test well you may struggle.
Professor Porter is a very kind and accommodating professor. She adjusted well to online classes and understood the different obstacles every student faced. She responds to emails and questions quickly, is thorough in her teaching, and her study guides/review are very helpful. There were three MC exams, a COLL 200 assignment & research requirement.
Professor Porter is very knowledgable. She makes her presentations fun. Taking notes is essential as some of the content on her exams are verbatim what she says in class. She posts the presentations on blackboard but not the notes. The tests aren't too bad but make sure you review your notes.
Drug Use is still my favorite class ever. Readings were long but accessible, and very interesting. 3 short papers and a long final paper, all of which Dr. Porter provided helpful feedback on. She facilitated incredible discussions and lectures were informative . Breaks down complex bio/psych concepts clearly.
Prof Porter has interesting lectures and engages her audience. I really appreciated that we gave us a heads up on what would be on the exams. However. she didn't post the lectures or powerpoints quickly especially when exams were coming up. Take good notes and answer her study guides!
Do not take this professor. I get the sense she wouldn't be awful if it was in person, but her lectures are extremely dry, hard to follow, and VERY note intensive. The study guides she created were a length that you would only be able to study if you sacrificed time in other classes for. Very disorganized & uncaring about mistakes she made on exams
Professor Porter is so sweet! She gives extra credit when students need it and has incredibly thorough outlines for the tests; as long as you study from those you're guaranteed an A! She's very knowledgable on the subjects and seems to love teaching it, too. Recording lectures for students to review later has been SO helpful for my studying, too!:)
Professor Porter is wonderful! Attendance is mandatory and she uses polls to make sure you are actually in class. Lectures are fast-paced and information-heavy, but she repeats anything you ask multiple times. Only 3 tests, but easy if you put in the effort. Textbook readings are good resources, but not necessary for the exams. Great Professor!
Tests are completely lecture based. Some test questions can be tricky to answer (you need her specific answer, not just a right one) but overall a straightforward and relatively easy class. Attendance counts (if taken synchronous/RSOF) but most of the grade comes from 3 multiple choice exams. She gives study guides. Only homework is reading.
Professor Porter's Intro Psych as a Natural Science is a great choice for a COLL200 NQR. Relatively easy, just listen to lectures and the reading isn't bad at all. She can be slightly disorganized and we kept getting behind, but you can tell that she's passionate about what she teaches and answered any questions people had! Super mild-mannered.
Porter is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. The portion on pharmacology is especially interesting. Not difficult to obtain an A if you attend lectures and review before tests. All exams are noncumulative. She gives ec too! COLL200 paper is pretty much completion and you'll get 100 & 6hr study requirement are usually surveys.
professor porter definitely solid. she pretty much sticks to the powerpoint slides but seems to enjoy fielding student questions and she's definitely knowledgeable. the online lectures were pretty boring tho, i was on my phone most of the time. pretty easy class, just don't get behind on ur SONA credits. not too much work outside of class.
Professor Porter is sweet and was understanding during the online semester. Material was very straightforward, all lectures/notes are posted, and attendance is mandatory (for points!). 3 exams (use her detailed study guides!), small writing assignment, attendance points, and extra credit. Just show up for lectures, study for the tests - easy A.
Professor Porter's class took a lot of studying. However, all the work you put into her class pays off. She offered multiple extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Whenever I had a question, she was always willing to help. Her presentations are great, but make sure to read the textbook. I suggest reading ahead of the lecture.
Psychopharmacology with Prof. Porter is the bEsT. Lectures are very content heavy and but you will get used to the load and she is so eloquent and makes everything incredibly interesting. Really easy exams & she gives very comprehensive study guides. If you want to do clinical psych, def take this class and with HER!
Professor Porters class was exclusively lecture, and really heavy lectures. If science or psych is not your thing than I do not recommend. Grade is based off of unit tests, Coll 200, and SONA. Theres a lot of information for the tests and it can be overwhelming. I think shes a great professor and has really interesting lectures! Shes quirky
Professor Porter is really nice. She tries to make the lectures interesting for the students and has a lot of fun activities thrown in. Her tests can be hard and you will need to study hard, but that's the same for everything at W&M honestly. Would take again.
Prof Porter is nice, knowledgeable, and cares about her students/helpful. Tests are multiple choice but show up to class and study bc she throws random questions in. I found the lectures to be a bit circular--it was confusing what the "point" of the lecture was so test material can be confusing and study guides were unorganized. hold review session
Took this class just for COLL 200 credit, but found myself really enjoying the class. Dr. Porter has engaging and informative lectures and records and posts them online, which is helpful to watch if you missed class/zone out, and for exam review. Very caring, love her energy, and clearly demonstrates her experience and knowledge in her field.
Professor Porter is kind, accessible, and passionate about the subject matter, but I have several issues with the course. The readings were unnecessarily long and repetitive, the grading criteria were simultaneously overly detailed and strangely vague, and she played devil's advocate a bit too much. Great prof, so-so course
Prof. Porter is absolutely the kindest, most relatable professor I've had and makes a genuine effort to make the material accessible and interesting. I always found myself excited to come to class. Had readings TWICE the whole semester. 100% the most organized prof I've had. Wish I had more characters to sing her praises. Take her class if you can!
Prof. Porter is very funny and interesting to listen to. The lectures can be dense and fast paced, but she posts recordings and a test study guide on Blackboard to help you review. She seems to genuinely care about feedback and always adjusts exam scores if she thinks there was an error on her part. I would recommend taking 201 with her.
One of the most understanding professors I've ever had. As long as you attend class, take notes, and study you're good to go.
Professor Porter is the best seriously. Drug Use is an easy class, light reading and essays as exams as well as one big research paper but not hard and she doesn't grade super hard. She's always there for her students and if you talk to her one-on-one she's understanding abt anything you have going on. take her for sure
There's no need to read the textbook since all the test content comes from her lectures. Also, she is very good at making her lectures interesting, and she'll happily repeat anything you might have missed if you raise your hand and ask her to. Just show up to class and take good notes. All you really have to do is study your notes before exams.
Drug Use was a pretty good course overall. However, sometimes there didn't seem to be any curriculum we were following, and we were learning random things that the professor tried to tie back to drug use. Anyhow, I enjoyed the class-wide discussions we had. Just make sure you have something to share with the class regarding the discussion topic.
Prof. Porter makes lectures entertaining, and all the questions on the exams come from her lectures. It's an interesting class and she explains all the topics very well; she also provides a study guide on blackboard before every exam.
Professor Porter is a great person and genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Drug Use was a super interesting class, but some of the topics felt too loosely related to the main subject. The homework load was also huge, oftentimes way too much. She's very clear on what she expects for essays ("exams") and the final paper.
Professor Porter is very kind and passionate about her topics. Her intro psychology classes are graded solely on exams and the exam info is taken solely from the in-class slides. Unfortunately this sounds great, but in reality was not as easy as it seems.
Lectures were long and boring. But, she would always add easy questions on the exams for easy points.
Professor Porter is a great professor and makes the class as straightforward as possible. I found her lectures relatively easy to follow, and she is great at answering people's questions during class. Final was non-cumulative, which is always a plus.
Absolutely loved PSYC 150 (drug use), the class was participation heavy but the topics we discussed made it enjoyable and I found myself actually wanting to participate. Professor Porter is super understanding too and while you are only allowed 2 absences if you have a legit reason she will not count it as one of your two
Professor Porter is very intelligent. She cares a lot about her class and she clearly wants her students to succeed. Lectures can get boring, but that's more due to dense material than her teaching style. She gave a COLL 200 project that is just meant to boost our grades, which was great.
She's a great teacher, but sometimes she is unorganized, be prepared to know stuff in detail. Cass is test-heavy, but you can rely on the slides she provides (pretty much all the questions come from them).
Professor Porter is very knowledgeable about the subject and wants everyone to pass the class. Her grading criteria is very clear and the few assignments we had are simple (basically grade boosters). Lectures can be pretty boring but it's mostly due to the material. Honestly, this was the easiest class I've taken. Basically AP Psych Lite.
Exams are harder than she says, you will think you did well until the scores come back. Lecture is very boring but the professor is fine and kind of funny.
My favorite professor during the semester. Exams are all directly from the slides (which are posted), and the final was non-cumulative. She was entertaining and intriguing despite class being at 8 AM. Lots of interesting videos, slides, ideas. Definitely recommend physio for anyone interested in psych and neuro.
Professor Porter is great. While her presentation material isn't the best, her own personality makes up for it, resulting in an engaging presentation. She is super dedicated to the students as well, she once meet with students over zoom to review ON HER BIRTHDAY. Such dedication. The material is pretty much served on a platter.
Porter is a cool professor. Grading criteria is very clear-- all exam questions come from the lectures, and there are only a couple additional assignments to complete over the semester. Many people consider this class an easy A. I found the exams deceptively difficult, but I'm also not a STEM major, so take that as you will.
Excellent teacher and does a great job explaining concepts, especially if you ask questions. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I highly recommend attending every class because the information will stick better, and she tests right from the lectures and slides.
Professor Porter is friendly, engaging, but a little disorganized. The exams are straight from her lectures, so they're simple as long as you pay attention in class. She posts study guides for everything covered on exams. Quizzes and the COLL 200 assignment are easy boosts to your grade, and she gives extra credit + curves exams.
Professor Porter absolutely slays the day in every way. Her class was very interesting, even for someone who doesn't have much of an interest in psych. Her tests were easy to do well in as long as you studied hard, and much of the other grading was participation based. Please take. She is a queen.
Professor Porter is very friendly and helpful to see one-on-one. Her exams have a lot of material but she gives study guides. The quizzes and the COLL 200 assignment help your grade. She also posts all the slides/recorded lectures which is helpful. At times, she seemed frazzled and she doesn't return the exams, so you can't see your mistakes.
Professor Porter is okay. She clearly knows the material and is passionate about the subject, but her presentation of the material is poor. She is very disorganized in lecture skipping some slides, emphasizing others, and moving about them randomly. Honorlock exams were also not very cash money. Course content is straight forward though. Average.
Porter is a funny lecturer and definitely keeps you engaged, but overall the class was kinda disorganized. The tests had unbalanced amounts of material on them - Test 2 was a lot of dense and hard material, but the other two were light and not too hard at all. Not the worst option, but I'd recommend taking someone else if you could.
Intro level course, so every class is a lecture. Some are engaging, some are boring, depends on how interested you are in the content. Porter is very disorganized and can take multiple weeks to give tests back (even though they are online). Test questions can be trick questions, so watch out. Easy way to get an NQR requirement.
Lectures were very boring. Tests were just based on memorization. Big class with few participants. Not my favorite.
Drug Use was definitely something I did not expect. Professor Porter is a little disorganized, but her lectures are interesting, along with the readings she assigns. There are two reflections and a final paper. If you do the readings, participate, and make use of office hours you should be able to get an A. Very unique and interesting discussions.
Professor Porter is caring and funny. Your grade is based off 10 simple 3 question open note quizzes and 3 non-cumulative multiple choice exams. She gives random extra credit that you have to be present for. If you don't go to class you will fail. I grew to enjoy her lectures. Overall easy and interesting class.
I'm not a psych major and took Natural psych 201 to fulfill my Coll 200 requirement, I learned nothing in the class. Professor Porter is unorganized and the lectures were hard to keep up with. exams are not hard but they are closed book, in class, and basically pure memorization. Take a different professor if you want to actually learn.
Great 150 with Dr. Porter! Taught how to read, write, and synthesize info (APA-focused). Final paper broken into 5 chunks throughout the semester, 2 reflections, mandatory participation + reading (but fake it till you make it). She's very inclusive and will still include you if you're late. Office hours were amazing and was such a help when needed.
She presents abt 20 mins, but you don't actually have to remember any info to do well. Rest of class is group discussions which are GREAT & ideas discussed were v helpful for the 2 write-ups. Participation is v important & class environment is lovely. Essay almost took me out but she is an easy grader if you show up to office hours & show effort.
Porter is a great professor and Drug Use was an excellent Coll 150 class. I had trouble with the final paper, and she was very accessible and I was able to meet with her outside of class a few times and she helped a lot with the paper.
Overall, a decent professor and class. Not very good with tech but accommodating when I could not come to class. I read and took notes on the textbook (found it online), but my friends who didn't found the class more difficult. Lots and lots of memorization. If you want an easy psych class, go with 202 or another professor, but this one isn't bad.
She is very educated about the content, so she welcomes questions openly. It was a 300-person lecture, but it didn't feel like it was that big. There is a lot of memorizing, especially for the first midterm, but it is doable. Also, the final was noncumulative which was cool. My main complaint is that the quizzes are not dated on the syllabus.
Prof. Porter clearly knows her content and her execution is amazing. There are 3 tests and 10 3-question quizzes (unfortunately not listed on a calendar) all of which are based on lecture material so attendance is of paramount importance (also for random extra credit opportunities). MCQ tests are reliant on memorization so be prepared for that.
Material on exams were very dependent on lectures, plus she randomly gives extra credit when you go! Exams are all multiple choice (closed note, but non-cumulative), make sure you pay attention to speakers because the material they talk about is on exams! TBH, I barely used my textbook, most of the material is talked about in lecture.
Pretty good teacher. Very lecture-heavy, but she makes the lectures somewhat engaging. Know to study more than just the study guide for the exams. Class is relatively easy and chill until you have to memorize lots of things for the exams. Keep in mind I'm not interested in psych or any STEM field, though, and found the material boring.
She's very nice and reasonable with work expectations. Exams are super easy (MC only) and most people can probably get an A without going to lectures. However, she offers extra credit randomly in class so it's best to go.
I absolutely loved Dr. Porter. She is incredibly kind and caring, and so beyond knowledgable. 3 exams (which were pretty long) and 2 easy response papers. I took this online over the summer so the class went pretty fast but definitely not difficult to keep up with content.
Prof. Porter's class is straightforward - lectures are essential, exams are memory-focused, but she offers random extra credit opportunities. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for efficient study prep. Overall, it's an easy class if you engage with the material.
Professor Porter's teaching is very straightforward, digestible, and engaging. Her lectures are interesting and she does a solid job of making psychology seem fun. Her exams are multiple-choice but you will need to really study to do well on them. Attending her lectures is worth it and will help you do well in the class.
lectures are engaging, open to answering questions inside/outside class, Not enough people take advantage of office hours you'll excel if you take advantage of what she offers. no extra cred do what she instructs in assignments and you'll get by. Use the textbook but don't study things you haven't covered in class, Anytime there's video take notes.
professor porter is a great person and very funny but i struggled heavily with her lectures as she covers a lot of information very quickly. for anyone not interested in biology i would not reccommend this class because it is VERY dense material. also, go to class because she will give 3 point quizzes that count towards your grade.
Boring and quiet lectures, especially for a packed lecture hall. You are tested on what is taught in class, not what is in the textbook. However, she doesn't annotate her slides and forgets to post them—one of the most frustrating courses I've taken. Hesitant to give extra credit, but does curve and give corrections when test averages are low.
Professor Porter was great! The tests were easy and didn't require lots of studying. The final was non-cumulative. The class included a lot of fun demos to keep you engaged. Lectures could drag, but not terribly so. The classes also included open note quizzes, sometimes announced in advance. They were simple as long as you take notes.
She's very sweet and cares about her students, but I personally didn't work well with her lecture and teaching style. Three exams, each worth 28.5% and a "coll 200" project worth 14.5% which acts a bit as a grade booster. She's definitely more of a neuroscience prof than a psych prof.
I really enjoyed this class and this Prof. She's really passionate about the class and goes really in-depth. She's really understanding but pushes you to engage in the class and your studies. She does tend to cold call sometimes and while it can be a little scary it does help. Study early as well because her tests are quite difficult.
Grade is based on 3 tests and a project. Good teacher, goes slow in lectures and through every detail multiple times. Don't need to read the textbook. No homework. BE AWARE- attendance is optional but you NEED to go to understand, exams are VERY lecture heavy & not everything is written on slides. IMO, exams are pretty fair/easy.
I am a student who gets distracted easily, so Prof. Porter's lectures would often lose my attention easily. Classes are pretty much the same every time, but she really cares about us passing. Class is "optional" but if you miss class, you will not pass. She is really accessible outside of class & was willing to curve tests and give retakes.
Awesome class and super interesting. You can tell she cared about us as students and wanted to hear what we had to say. Wasn't any more work than any other class would be. Make sure to start on your final paper early! She's also super accessible outside of class.
Not too hard of a subject but she doesn't go out of her way to make it easy if you have to miss class. Her slides have random pictures but no notes about what's important and she forgets to post them half the time. Takes forever to grade but all tests were multiple choice and non-cumulative.
The class isn't hard as it's just memorization but there's a lot of material. Exams are also non-cumulative. I typed everything she said as some details that were not on the study guide would be on exams. It's also hard to study with just the slides. My only complaint is that she is bad with tech and takes a long time to post the slides and grades.
Very hit or miss. Some classes I was bored out of my mind, and some were hilariously engaging. Still, she covered all the content in class and repeats the important testable things enough times for you to catch it even if you aren't fully paying attention. Definitely studied, but she wants you to succeed. Even on her worst days, she's an icon.
This class was very average. Some classes were interesting, though most were very boring. The exams could've definitely been made a lot easier. Porter as a teacher was solid, she is funny and creative with some of the lessons. I would try and take a different teacher for nat psych if possible, but its not the end of the world if you have Porter.
Take this class! Very easy A. All exams are online and very easy to study for. Her lectures can be boring but if you take basic notes you will do well. COLL 200 essay was a completion grade. Just make sure to do the SONA studies for a grade buffer. She gives quizzes during class sometimes but they are open note.
She clearly knows the material super well but sometimes she goes so fast that it is overwhelming, but there's only so much a professor can do when teaching 250 ppl. If you're good at teaching yourself material, you'll do great. If not, you'll still probably do fine as long as you lock in
If you are planning to go into STEM, this will probably be a very easy class for you. She does her best to make lectures engaging, but has weird pacing. Sometimes she will breeze by 10 topics, sometimes you will spend 20 minutes reviewing. If you just need the credit, this should be a very easy (somewhat boring) class.
Prof. Porter is the coolest professor I had last semester. Lectures are fun and easy to follow and the tests are exactly what she talks about in class. I recommend going to class, typing notes, and just making Quizlets from them to study for the test.
Lovely person, terrible professor. COLL 150s are about learning to write, right? Wrong. They're apparently about learning to write in the style your particular professor wants you to write. Other than the insanely nitpicky style Professor Porter wants your assignments in, she's a great person and very willing to work with you on issues/deadlines.
Professor Porter made the class enjoyable with her fun personality, but we fell quite far behind on the material compared to the syllabus. The difficulty wasn't bad, but we cut quite a lot of content and repeated stuff.
445 with her was very content heavy and you definitely have to spend some time memorizing stuff! This is a very lecture-based class, so if you are able to memorize everything from the lecture you will do great! Exams are not too difficult and it's all on the lectures, not the textbook at all.
Mixed opinions on her, but I thought that her lectures were engaging and she often had demos that were interesting. I would go back and read the book to review and fill in gaps since there's a lot of material and she moves fast. She has review sessions where she goes over what will be on the test.
Professor Porter is a great woman, but not the best or worst professor. You're graded by three tests, 10 spontaneous quizzes worth 3 points each, and a few paragraphs write-up (nothing to stress about). She does do some demonstrations to make class engaging. If you told me I couldn't take another class with her I wouldn't be happy or sad.
Average teaching
If you want to do well in this class, GO TO IT AND TAKE NOTES. Just because she doesn't take attendance doesn't mean you can skip. She writes NOTHING on the slides and talks the WHOLE TIME.
Prof. Porter is super cool. A little bit boring at times, but that also has to do with the content. IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES! Exams are definitely do-able if you study sufficiently - she also hosts online review sessions before the exams that are super helpful. Overall a manageable class if you put in a little effort.
She made the content very interesting. Although attendance was not mandatory, she made it worthwhile to attend class. She was a very fair grader, and no one assignment was truly challenging. She genuinely cared about how people did on the test and was more than willing to help with any problems. Her review sessions were helpful.
The content of the course has been my favorite so far, but Porter is AWFUL. I only have grades for 3 out of 32 assignments. She always posts homework the night before it is due, giving students less than 24 hours to complete 1+ hour assignments. She is the MOST unorganized professor I have ever seen, and her midterm and final paper are BRUTAL.
Professor Porter is now my favorite professor. She is incredibly kind and takes time out of her day to talk to you. She remembers things about me that I have only mentioned a few times and brings them up in conversation. She is incredibly helpful during office hours and explains everything. The tests are somewhat difficult and very specific.
She puts 1 sentence or a bullet point on the slides and a giant irrelevant diagram taking up 90% of the slides, so even if you try to review the slides after class or for studying purposes you'll have basically no information. All the info comes from listening to lectures in-person, but her lecturing style is disorganized and confusing.
This professor is very confusing and even though she gives us a schedule, she herself doesn't follow it. Her lectures are unhelpful to prepare you for the exams and she will sporadically take attendance through blackboard quizzes. Her quizzes are straightforward and are necessary to bring your grade up from the very difficult exams.
why? anyways shes just a very fine teacher, lots of seemingly pointless info in lectures that eventually shows up on a test which makes for a required but questionable attendance structure, especially since the actual info that's more applicable from the textbook is considered required outside reading students have to teach themselves for tests.
A lot of what she teaches in the class doesn't really apply to tests. The tests are very specific and niche compared to the quizzes, which don't help either because they're too short. Lectures are really boring and she just reads off slides. A lot of material is never even taught that are on the tests. She's nice but horrible at teaching
Psych is not a difficult subject but prof Porter does make it more difficult than it needs to be. She has slides but they are not helpful which means you need to take notes in class. Sometimes it gets hard to take notes because she either goes over things really fast or slow. The tests are long and cover lots of material so it is vital to study.
Slides aren't a good way to study, so you must take notes in her class and show up! Otherwise, it's honestly fine. As long as you pay attention/take notes & study for a few hours before exams you'll be fine. Minor quizzes every week or so boost your grade, VERY small sections are self taught via (free) textbook as readings. Not easy but p chill tbh
Professor Porter is knowledgeable, engaging, and funny. As much as I enjoyed the subject and her lectures, she can be frustrating to communicate with regarding assignments and assessments. There were multiple times where she said she would post a quiz and it would be delayed, which placed an undue amount of stress upon the students.
Porter is mostly good. The class is interesting although it is difficult. Sometimes she struggles to use technology, explain things clearly or be engaging but its generally a fine class. Be ready to do weekly take home quizes, SONA credit, 200 level writing assignments, and 3 difficult tests (average around 82 for all 3). Go to class and take notes
Professor Porter moves extremely quickly through her slides and does not explain content well. Grade is based on 3 multiple-choice exams and a few quizzes. Made the class much more difficult than it needed to be.
Professor Porter is very nice but her class lectures are difficult. It goes super fast and the slides are not relevant to what she talks about sometimes. The class schedule was very unorganized and things would change all the time. I would not recommend taking this class.
Prof. Porter is an incredibly kind and caring person however she's so disorganized it makes class hard to follow. Her slides are useless and she only tests on things that she says so you have to go to lecture and write down everything she says. Also isn't great at responding to emails or letting us know when we would have a quiz!
lectures were fine but the slides were basically just photos (so impossible to use to study for exams), there are 13 quizzes that only add up to 7% of your grade??? each exam is 25% of your grade and SO DIFFICULT, she gives a "study guide" that is basically one paragraph of rambling questions. if you're a bad test taker DO NOT take this class
Professor Porter gives fun and interesting lectures but tends to be a little disorganized. Quizzes are open note. Although attendance isn't mandatory showing up allows opportunity for extra credit. Tests are based mostly on lectures so take good notes during class and you'll be fine.
Lectures can be disorganized and slides aren't super clear either. Three exams; final is non-cumulative. She posts review questions for each exam that do seem hyper-specific and weirdly formatted, but if you study them exactly you should be ok for the exams. Best to show up to class because stuff from lectures shows up on exam and not on slides.
She is so disorganized. She wouldn't remember what she wrote on her own agenda and had to ask the class if we had a quiz today, it was ridiculous. She also would say that a topic would be on the exam and suddenly it was there. I'm just glad I got my NQR over with and I'm done with science forever.
Considering this is a filler class, she is surprisingly strict. The tests aren't difficult, but you must attend lecture, as exam content is heavily based on the lecture material, not the slides. She also doesn't record lectures if you can't make it to class for any (and I mean any) reason, so if you have an accident, bad luck. Often disorganized.
Confusing and unorganized slideshows, easy for dishonest students to cheat so the curve punishes honest students.
Tests are multiple choice, focus mostly on lecture material, and make up 75% of your grade. It's somewhat tough to review because the slides are mainly bullet points and pictures, so you need to take good notes! Nothing is super difficult, but quiz/test questions can be oddly specific at times. She is good about posting review sheets, though.
