I took this as an online class, thinking that it would be easy. I was so wrong. I did one assignment that took me four hours to complete, and I got a D on that assignment! Unless you have several hours to dedicate to an online class, don't take this one.
I was assuming this class would be pretty easy since online anthro classes usually are. It was a little harder than expected, but I still got a good grade. He was however, not easy to reach, did not return emails and had a good deal of work. He did not imput grades so I kept waiting! The course was interesting, better than 101, hes worth taking.
Excellent teacher. Very prompt and helpful. Interesting exercises and discussion sessions. Dr. Curtis is great.
He is very passionate about the subject... maybe too passionate. Will get back to you, but takes time. A slow and harsh grader. Only take this online class if you have LOTS of extra free time to devote. You will learn a lot, but defintely NOT an easy A.
Hard teacher. Anthropology is his world and he is very into it and doesn't really appeal to the "only taking cuz I have to" mentality.
I took this class over winter intercession. YIKES! This class required more writing than my ENG 101 class! one assignment a week being lie 5-8 pages typed. very slow on returing work. he was 10-15 minutes late and often continued past the time the class was scheduled to end. lectures are posted online=only plus. get a different prof if you can!
Just took the 5 week winter intersession with Dr. Curtis. Very hard course and his very fast paced power point lectures make it very hard to retain the enormous amount of information being thrown at you. He loves anthropolgy, and really can't relate to students that don't share his enthusiam for the subject. Overuses words "particular/articulate"
One of the best professors at College of the Canyons
His class is challenging but you learn a lot and parts of it are kind of fun. Prof. Curtis makes you learn. It's not an easy class, but we're in college right? Exercises are really interesting and get you to think about issues.
Took online. Good class. Pretty easy.
I recommend him.
This class was a pain. I took it online, and the guy gives ridiculously huge assignments. Thousands of words of typing on each one. There's only five or so of these "exercises" during the semester, but it's still a ton of work at once. He's not that helpful, you mostly just read the book and websites. Take it if you have to, but otherwise avoid.
What a great professor! Really gets you thinking about topics, definitely need more professors like him here. Very knowledgeable about anthropology and enthusiastic to teach! It's a hard class but people it's college. Go to class. Put in 110% and you'll be fine.
He is very passionate about his subject, and the exercises are not hard but they require a lot of work. You will learn a ton about anthropology, but you need to go to class. I would not avoid him as long as you are prepared to work.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
THIS CLASS IS HORRIBLE. He gives you 4 1000 word assignments and after doing all that since your 2 exams are worth more then half your grade you can still easily fail!!! i spent 4 hours on each assignment and then because his two tests were so hard and like 300 questions long that are fill in i failed! i would not recommend it!
Excellent!
I thought it was a really good class. The class is challenging, but he's passionate and really knows his stuff. A lot of work, but its a biology class afterall.
Loved this prof. Really nice and organized.
EXCELLENT!!!!
Nice guy. Concerned about how students do in the class. Helpful and gives a bunch of extra credit during the semester.
I am proud to call myself an A student, so I hope I come off as credited. This was by far the worst professor I have ever had. His class consisted of no group work or interaction, just 3 hours of him rambling on. He seemed more interested in sounding smart than actually helping. Study guides were the entire book, did not narrow down or help at all!
This guy digs anthropology and it shows. Classes are organized. He posts Powerpoint lectures and study guides. He can talk for a really long time, so be warned. But it is usually interesting and he does show some cool videos. A lot of work is required. Really good teacher and he is very helpful. But not an easy class. Not an easy A.
He is a great professor. He does get lost in his own words and he often repeats himself. He gives two exams and the study guides are very large, but if you complete it; you will get a great grade. The lab work is extensive, but you are given a week to do it. He is very passionate and it is great to learn from
Matt is a super nice guy, and incredibly passionate about his subject. BUT don't take this class if you're looking for an easy "A." It is VERY tough, probably the toughest class I've taken at COC, and I'm an "A" student.
Nice guy, knows his stuff but does not belong as a teacher. only 2 tests, and a few 1000+ word assignments. If you study the tests are okay but its a lot of work. Only take if you need this class.
If you are not just looking for an easy A, but you actually are interested in learning anthroplogy, Dr. Curtis is your guy. Really, the class is not hard as long as you keep up with the weekly work. If you listen in class, you will be seriously a more interesting and smarter person when you are done. Very intelligent prof, learn all you can!
Learned a bunch. Always interesting.
AMAZING TEACHER!!! he literally gives you the questions that will be on the test and ALL you have to do is memorize the written answers.. blows my mind why people think thats hard. written assignments are a lil time consuming but really easy. gives stupid amount of extra credit. never learned so much without even trying.
Dr. Curtis may have been the best teacher I've ever had. But if you aren't genuinely interested in learning, you probably won't have a good experience in this class because the material is very detailed and can be a bit tedious at times. He manages to make it exciting and beautiful though if you do your work, study, go to class, and pay attention.
Take this professor!!! Awesome professor. DO NOT MISS CLASS.Attendance isn't mandatory, but missing class will make you miss info about exams. He is very helpful with whatever you need. Bring a laptop for lecture because he goes a little fast. Exams are not hard at all, if you do the work. Grades on quality not quantity. Overall great professor.
I did not expect to enjoy this class, but I really did. Great professor! Totally organized and very smart.
I love anthropology but unfortunately I regret taking the 101 course over summer online...believe me when I say TOO much work...our lecture files consisted of over 550 power point slides that we had to read as well as the chapters in the book and discussions AND written assignments! and he doesn't provide feedback when grading your assignments :(
One of the best at COC. Definitely puts a lot of time into lectures and takes time to answer questions. Relates really well to students who show interest in anthropology, older students, and students who take their studies seriously. Nice person too.
Very nice professor and loves what he does. He works with the students if they miss an assignment as long as you're honest. Only bad thing is that he does not respond to emails. He also makes you take quizzes on information that is taught after you take the quiz. Doesn't make sense.. Alternate each week between quizzes and assignments. 2 big tests.
Dr. Curtis was overall a great professor. At first, he seemed kind of boring and monotonous, but as the semester went on, I began to like him more and more. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about what he does. This class is not easy and you really need to read to keep an A or a B, but I would suggest taking him!
Professor Curtis was one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. He is truly passionate about Archaeology and it shows through his lectures. There is a lot of book work, but the texts are actually pretty helpful. I HIGHLY encourage you to take him if given the chance.
Curtis' class is straight-up lecture, with powerpoints, but overall it's not too difficult. He makes it interesting and is super helpful and accomodating. 2 tests, midterm and final, and a bunch of quizzes here and there. Read the text, come to class, and you'll be fine. :)
He ended up being easy, however so unorganized and only going off of power points. Does not return any work or quizzes and is hard communicate with. Got a good grade in the class and thankful for his extra credit
This was one of the few classes where I actually learned stuff. Professor Curtis was a very proficient teacher and his class is really easy to get an A in if you do the work. Pay attention to the key concepts that he goes over and you will do well. If you attend this class and do the work, you will get the A easily.
This guy seemed very organized and nice which I loved. I felt he was an intense grader, this is not my major and is my absolute first Anthropology class so that was a bit upsetting. He did offer extra credit, thank goodness. Overall nice guy but would be better in person.
Great online class. Definitely feels like a university course. Challenging and full of really interesting subjects. There are discussion sessions, written assignments (like papers that involve online explorations), and weekly tests focused on the textbook and professor's online PowerPoint lectures, which are loaded with links and photos. Loved it
Go to Class, turn in assignments youre good!
Dr. Curtis is inspirational, passionate about his field, and very helpful. He is organized, but flexible and he seems to really care about how students do in the class. This is not an easy class. Study guides for exams and interesting written assignments are helpful. And he is a nice guy.
Good professor lots of writing assignment pay attention to the work because he expects a lot of details when it comes to the writing assignments especially explaining your answers.
Professor Curtis is great at what he does. He is a very organized professor, does assign a lot of homework but it is manageable. His lectures are very clear, if you study the notes, you'll do well on exams. He gives a lot of useful information. If you need help, he will help. He is very understanding and seems to care how well his students do.
This guy is passionate but I wish he ran energy for his class I wish he made it more fun it's okay I guess if you need the credit you will be fine there are extra credit opportunity and also take it will help you in the long run I promise you that
Don't procrastinate the written assignments. They're easy, but require you to watch long videos which you need to answer the questions. Put aside at least 4 hours per. Other than that, his 105 was awesome!
Dr. Curtis is one of my favorite professors at COC. I learned so much in his class. I am not an anthropology major, but the class was really useful for me. He expects a lot, so it is not an easy class. He is nice and pretty funny sometimes. Good at explaining.
A lot to learn in this class. But great class. Interesting subject and teacher.
What can I say? This professor was absolutely amazing! He was very inspirational and the lectures were interesting to listen to. Whenever you need help with a certain concept, he will gladly answer your questions. Do the writing assignments and study guide questions because they will be on the midterm and final. He's literally the best! :)
Dr. Curtis was very sweet, however he is tough on grading, He gives at least six papers and two main test, The rest are quizzes. He does give extra credit but study for exams!! He always showed up late for my class but never cut anyone slack for him showing up lately. Show up to class to receive better understanding and for extra creditpop quizzes
Professor Curtis is so excited and knowledgeable about this subject you really become interested. I have learned so much this semester and this class has helped me with my other classes like Geology. I highly recommend you take his class go to lectures it makes the homework and tests easier. Clean grader and fair
A scholar and a gentleman! He is the best professor I have had at College of the Canyons!
Cool teacher, very straight-forward and replies quickly to emails. I took the 5 week session, which required more work than most, 1 discussion post w/ peer replies, 1 test (2 hours time limit w/ mc questions & free response) FR part hard/long, 1 written assignment which consists of watching videos/answering questions. Most videos were long though.
Took as short term online class. Hardest class I've taken. HW takes forever and so much detail. More of a critical thinking anthropology class. Grades like an upper division class. Extremely hard grader. Tests are timed and barely finished in time. 25 multiple choice and 5 long essay questions. I would NOT recommend this class to anyone. Skip it!
I learned so much in this class. I didn't think I would care that much for anthropology, but the human evolution concepts were mind blowing. The class instruction is like a real university class. Felt like how I imagine a class at UCLA or USC, except in community college. Would definitely recommend.
-His homework load is ridiculous, as if this was our only class. -He doesn't give enough time to complete the tests -You have to read about 300 pages and a 400 page PowerPoint for each exam. -He'll deduct points from you if you have a simple grammar mistake. - Take him only if you are up to a challenge.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Takes a really long time to grade, don't mind waiting an entire semester to find out if you have actually passed the class? Then he's the teacher for you. He doesn't make any assignment clear so you have no idea what he is expects from it. Also, the test are very hard and his PowerPointsare more like powerparagraphs.
Dr. Curtis' online physical anthropology class is REALLY GOOD! It is a serious class, but you will learn so much. You need to know that it is a 5 week class. There is a lot to do in such a short time. But that it is probably true of other online classes. It just seems like particularly a lot of work in this class. But it is a science class.
Anthropology 105 - Archaeology - I took a few semesters ago. Only in classroom. I don't think this one is offered online. Prof Curtis is fair, smart, and really likes what he teaches. Archaeology is not as exciting as it seems. A lot of details and focus on methods and theories. Curtis keeps it interesting though with his insights.
I would recommend Online Anthropology 101 for science credits. Took eight week class that goes by very quickly. I agree with others that it is a difficult class. Not sure that is because of the teacher but probably the subject. Very organized class and Curtis is good online teacher. There are essay assignments, quizzes, discussion sessions.
Good class. Very good professor. Do the work, attend class, don't procrastinate on assignments, and keep up with the reading and you will be fine. I did and was.
Although I loved Curtis when I took it in the fall, the workload was heavy. Writing assignments are tedious, lectures were interesting! I learned, but his exams/quizzes were tough. You really need to be disciplined and do writing assignments early. I wrote 20+ pages and some I got a A and others low. I don't know how I passed, but thanks Curtis.
Right after I walked out of the final I thought fersure I wasn't going to pass, but I was wrong because I got an A. Class consists of writing assignments, quizzes, e.c. Quizzes, ect, I didn't go to two classes and missed an extra credit quiz so make sure to just go to lecture. his final is tough so really study and do ec writing hw it will help!
Good teacher. Interesting. Responsive. Fair. Challenging. Heavy book use. Lectures with much detail and photos and illustrations. Homework that uses websites. Discussions with other students - don't miss these. Discussions have interesting topics and are easy. Extra credit at end of course (extra credit written assignment homework).
He's amazing, he really is. First day of class I felt his welcoming vibe and he's approachable. Throughout the class, we had writing assignments , quizzes, test, and the writing assignments are timely however they help ur grade. I got a C on his final, but got a A with the extra credit. His final is tough so make sure to do the extra credit.
I do not know how I got an A. I got a C on that final, but it's the extra credit. Now if you don't work(like me) it's worth taking, but if you do work I don't recommend. his final you had to know the dates and the different monkeys. Writing assignments are tedious and his test are hard you have to do extra credit. Good luck you guys.
The class didn't seem so bad and it was interesting, however his writing assignments took me an entire day to finish. Studying for midterm was hard, you really got to study his study guide word for word. I missed 2 classes and I lost out on extra credit. Just go to class. He's very good prof, but you need to work for an A. Hard like uni prof.
I really liked him and this class. It's just a lot of work. The one thing I liked was for final the writing assignment ?'s were on there so you have to memorize it. I typed out the notes so I had everything in one document. Study for his exams, DO EXTRA CREDIT. I got a C on final but A from extra credit. It will help cancel out any bad test scores.
If you are not interested in anthropology I wouldnt recommend to take his class at first I found it super boring and class felt super long. He is very extra with his assignments although they are doable. Don't take this class if you are lazy and procratinate. He's those professors who expect you to know the material the way they know it.
I would have to agree with the review below. He is absolutely amazing, but only if your interested in the material. However, I didn't find it boring I found it interesting so it was very doable for me to study. He gave lots of writing assignments that are lengthy and expects a lot with them. His exams are tough and you need to really study!
Really nice and understanding guy. Good teacher, well educated. Anthropology the class itself is hard, he is very lecture heavy and homework assignments are extremely long, but as long as you follow his instructions and do what you need to do, you will be fine. I thought I was doing terrible just because the material was hard but ended up okay.
If you love anthro or thinking of majoring in it or just interested in it Curtis will be your best choice. He is very passionate about it and you can talk to him about anthro. The writing assignments are a lil bit tedious and his exams are just hard. I got a C on final, but still managed to get an A. Make sure you do e.c.
Truly the best. Loved his class. You will learn for sure.
I was a science major, so yes I took this class to gain some insight. Professor Curtis opened my mind in looking at human evolution in a different light. I learned so much from the different time periods and how we had evolved and just human evolution in general. Watched an interesting video about Charles Darwin. You will learn
He teaches like university course, so this class felt nothing like I was in a CC course. I felt I was whisked away in UCSB in his class. Interesting and engaging lectures with a passionate man about anthro. Lectures open your mind to new thinking processes. It's just a hard course, but I liked it was challenging. Study your butt off! I got A
He's great person, but if you are looking for a proff with not a lot of work DON'T TAKE ONLINE. Writing assignments take forever to finish and are lengthy. He's better in class lecture, but gives out a lot of work. Helpful study guides and nice, but it was a lot of homework and videos to watch. Take if your a anthro major or have the time!
I told my friend to take him because he was amazing when is took it in fall. She took it online and told me there was tons of work and he was a tough grader and many assignments. I would advise you maybe not to take him for online, but if you can do it on campus. He is admirable and very helpful with material. I learned a tons about evolution
Professor Curtis is a solid choice if you're willing to do the work. He give written assignments that are SUPER long, but if you do them they are not too bad. He give A LOT of extra credit , which if you do can really help your grade(You can get 10% up from it) His tests are very hard, but there are so many other ways to get points its not so bad
i got an 92, but i didn't go to one class to hang out with a friend and missed a extra credit quiz. Honestly just go to class, dont be stupid like i was. It can help because exams are really tough; you must know the information well. I read text and created note cards from his study guide and still ended up with an A. I was inspired take curtis.
Dr. Curtis is by far he best teacher Ive ever had, he is incredibly thorough and very intelligent. He does give activities to do which can involve a lot of writing, but hes a fair grader. Feel free to ask him any question and hell have an answer. I almost transferred out of his class due to scheduling Im glad I didnt.
Prof Curtis is the best professor I've ever had! It's clear that he's passionate about teaching and anthropology. He makes you feel like you're in an actual university lecture. However, he does grade like a university professor. But if you pay attention, ask questions and do the homework you'll be fine. I wish all my professors were like this!
He was not the best fit for me as a student. He would fall behind with his own lectures and tend to lecture material AFTER we had been tested on the subject, he requires to read EVERYTHING. For homework he gives "written" assignments that usually end up being 10+ pages, so unless you have a love for anthro or a ton of time I wouldn't recommend.
He is clearly very passionate about his field of work and it is noticeable. He is incredibly smart and very thorough in his lectures. His assignments can be long and have a lot of writing, but he doesn't give many of them and if you space them out with enough time, they're easy to complete. He is a tough grader, so put some thought into your work.
I love anthropology and I know a lot about it but I couldn't get more than 50% on any assignment. His writing assignments ended up being 5-10 pages long and his questions were vague and barely related to the reading, which there's lots of. To add, his comments were unhelpful and rude.
I took Curtis for a short term online Anthro 101 class and he was pretty good. His lectures were LONG but im sure that's because it was a short term class so there was more material to pack in. This class isn't related to my major but i thought it was actually really interesting and the documentaries you watch in this class are actually fun
This course was a lot. Not difficult but it does take a lot of your time to complete his multiple page assignments and view multiple hour long lectures. If you do all the work and stay on schedule, the tests are easy. But if you get behind, your grade could be in trouble. He does offer extra credit though which helped a lot!
Since it was an online class, never got the chance to interact with him much. The powerpoints were very long (one chapter was over 300 slides) and writing assignments can be pretty long too. It is also very difficult to get a 100% in almost everything and he is a very tough grader.
I liked this class much more than I expected. Very interesting class. I felt like a smarter person when I completed the course. There are multiple quizzes and written assignments, but fair and straight forward.
He stresses the relevance of anthropology and this is very useful. There is a lot of information in this course, but it all came together for me.
Wish more of my online classes were like this one. Interesting, organized, and fair. Challenging but worth it. He is accommodating and gives an extra credit assignment at the end of the semester that helped boost my score.
Dr. Curtis is a helpful professor and the the class is always interesting.
Professor is very caring and passionate. Great lectures, very informative. Work load is decent, chapter a week for reading and has a test and written assignment every two weeks. Tests were 3 hours and assignments took 7+ hours.
I took him in a short time class. He gave good feedback and was super clear with grading. The only thing that is annoying is that although there are fewer assignments, they can take hours to complete. Tests are also super long but are open book and straight out of the presentations. Expects more than the bare minimum. Would recommend.
I had a really good experience with Porfessor Curtis. He gives clear instructions and the assignments are interesting. A bit of work in the class, but not more than most. Have to write a lot, but he is a lenient grader. I think that Prof might even better in person because his lectures are interesting.
