Grades way too harsh. Never expect more than a C on a speech..no matter what!
Grades ridiculously...one absence is 20 pts off of your participation grade! and never expect more then a C on a speech NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT IS! plus you have a 91 question MC final...and a test basically every class!
Do NOT take Beaven. No matter how much time and effort you put into a speech, you will get a C. You will also have a quiz every class,on stuff that he has never talked about. He also thinks he is a know it all. Nothing you do will be good enough.

I think he was a good teacher. I got an A on both the final speeches. I had an overall grade in his class of an A. He does give quizes every week or so but they are all from the book and the internet. I got high b's but mostly A's. Just read the book!

Do not take him if at all possible. He is very pompous and does not treat his students equally. He once said, after taping speeches, Some of you may realize you need to lose weight after seeing yourself.

It is possible to get an A, but only after going through a semester of **** and arrogant remarks. You are never right in his class, even if you have first-hand knowledge, you are wrong. That's b/c he thinks that reading the newspaper makes him GOD!
If you take his class you better stay home and study the book and come do the exams. he reads the news paper and tells you about his life. do not explain the material and never even cover it. Avoid him if you can. I got an A but by studying the book word
This man is an aweful professor! He preaches his own opinions and will not acknowledge anyone else's unless it agrees with his own. He also grades as if you have been a speech major for 4 years. An 84% was the highest grade anyone got all semester!

I see some things never change! I graduated KU in 1990 and was a communications major. I had him for Mass Communications and American Speakers and their Impact. He gave tough exams so be prepared.

Beaven was a jerk.. He belittled people in our class. His grading was unfair- all speeches got a C whether the guidelines were followed or not. If you asked for help, he would tell about his Uncle Charlie in a concentration camp- waste of a semester!!
If at all related to anything or anyone in the world, this professor would be most closely related to Satan.
I feel bad putting anyone down, but I would recommend that if you can avoid taking Dr. Beaven's class, do it! I found that he wasted a lot of class time on off the topic stories, which makes it pretty to not pay attention.

Avoid this class if possible. It's a waste of time. The highest grade on a speech was a mid 80 and he gives useless quizes and assigns useless projects. Be prepared to hear endless BS stories, he's an authority on everything

This is the most unhelpful, unclear teacher I have ever dealt with in my life. He doesn't teach anything he tests you on. Don't expect to get better than a C on your speeches. When he's lecturing he talks about his wierd ass family. Drop this class.

This guy is an ass. He thinks he knows everything about everything and that's usually what his lectures are about. All the students are wrong and he's right. Impossible quizes almost every class and he gives C's on all his major speeches. Run fast!

I learned more about Beaven's family and his life, than speech. I can't think of anybody in my class that got higher than a "B" on a speech. I am not sure what he is looking for in his speeches to receive an 'A'. I am just glad that i am out of

How this man got tenured and is one of the highest paid professors at K-town I'll never understand. The most pointless and frustrating class I've ever had.
Whatever you do-- do not take Dr. Beaven. He seems very nice, but its only deceptive. If you miss one class, your participation grade goes down to 75, and so on. Tests are every other week and soo hard. One person with a B. Everyone else below that!
he makes up stories about his life and doesn't really teach. but the final had the answers under each question for some reason. no one gets higher than a b.

I am not a speech major but it sure felt like I ws taking a 400 level speech class. He drill and drills, no examples other then family stories and how great his bro can remember things. Take him if you want a low grade and have MANY quizes

Horrible teacher, quizes every other day on material he didnt teach you. Makes you give lots of speeches on days you dont take a quiz. Overall hes a nice guy but he makes it way to hard of a class compared to other speech classes. Dont take his class!
He's a very nice guy but he talks about complete nonsense that is unrelated to anything other than his own family. He doesn't teach he just talks about random things. If you want to fail take him!

11 quizes which will never be reviewed, 2/5 speeches graded unfairly. on my first 5 min graded speech, i recieved a 78 because he thought it could be longer. (it was 6 minutes) he said if the speech was 10-15 minutes, i would have recieved a higher grade. 1/3 of class dropped out after 3 weeks.
Terrible Teacher. Actually He doesn't teach. The majority of the class he rambles on about information that is totally irrelevent to the subject. quizzes all week. 2/5 speeches graded recieved a 78 for following the assignment perfectly. worst professor ever. drop him. OR DON'T TAKE HIM!

Despite what has been said, I really enjoyed the class. I attended all classes, participated and tried my best on assignments. Even though I did poorly on his tests,I surprisingly received a C for the class.
Kutztown amazes me sometimes with their bs teachers. This professor always was right no matter what, tests were impossible even if u studied for days, and the speeches, he was so critical u mind as well be a CNN news castor in order to pass his class.

He is very friendly, but gets extrememly off subject all the time and will talk for hours. A lot of quizzes and a lot of speeches... avoid if possible but its livable
Tumor-iffic. Doesn't bother with anything as trivial as teaching the subject of the class. Instead, he talks about how unhealthy kids are, or how he knew this guy in 1956, or how cars handle in the snow. His tests are impossible, everyone always fails, and this somehow confuses him. Don't take him.

The first few speeches weren't even graded so you had no clue if it was A material or not. He gives alot of quizzes and at least 5 speeches. he tapes all your speeches to , i regret taking this guy
nice man, bad prof. read the book for the quizzes. the tests at the end are insane. the actual speeches? he doesn't grade them till the last 2 so you don't know what grade level they're at until the end, and he grades them really hard. avoid if possible. if you get stuck with him, get ready to work
I was actually interested in this subject until I sat through his class. Boring. He has a thing about newspapers- loves'em so we looked at those instead of the book! But the tests were mostly on the book..mult choice w/ a few short answer (but must be detailed) about news articles.. my advice AVOID!
If you are nervous about public speaking, he will make you feel even worse by the end of the course.
All I'll say is the man helped me in one thing... To switch my minor from PR to psychology. A'hole and awful teach. I learn more watching flys around dog s***.

There was a time when being a speech major made the bear Beaven unavoidable... I don't think that is the case anymore... this guy is the most pompous, arrogant **** that will ever teach you... BUT... he really is as smart as he says he is.

Beaven is possibly one of the most brilliant teachers I have, but the class is incredibly hard. Most students would say that he doesn't teach at all, but they just don't see what he's doing: he's teaching us as he speaks. He's showing us how we could act and how we should dress, and all that stuff. True brilliance, even though I hate the class. Not to mention he's also one of the funniest people I've ever met.

the guy is definetly smart. he has his own way of teaching and i think that alot of people just cant get used to that. his quizes are a pain, ive failed most of them. i think its good the way he teaches cause it doesnt put more on the huge workload that i have from other classes, yet i still feel like i accomplish things in his class
This class was by far the worst I've taken at KU and I'm a senior! He is soooo boring and unorganized, he makes things up as he goes along and is too lazy to actually plan a class so he just makes u go to the front of the class and talk about ANYTHING for 3 minutes or something. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE FOR SPEECH!

ok, we get it! we should excersize and eat healthy, so stop preaching to us and start teaching the material. "Great fun there" no it's really not. I'll be lucky to get a B or even a C in this class.
he is a terrible prof. he doesn't grade a single speech until the last two, and each are 25% of your final grade. he looks like abraham lincoln, and tells pointless stories of which have no relavance to his class. quiz pretty much every class period, and you HAVE to read the book, or else you won't get the answers. usually doensn't lecture.
This class was tough but in the end I really learned a lot. He doesnt grade the speaches on the aparent time and effort you put in but the actually conetent of the speech and the way you talk to the class. The quizes were hard but just read the book.

Dr. Beaven is a pure example of a person who should of retired years ago. He does not teach to any curriculum, has us learn articles about food for COMM CLASS, and makes tests nearly impossible to pass (he curves every single time). I do not know where he gets off using this scatterbrained teaching tactic, but it is not worth taking him...ever.

Demanding and hard grader. be prepared for a LOT of work: lots of quizzes, speaches and other things. I think his expectations regarding performance are too high for an intro course like this.
I had this teacher last fall and I dreaded going. I hate public speaking so that didn't help, but he didn't make it any better. He talks about pointless things and his quizzes are ridiculously hard. To get atleast a C I would have to study for 2 hours+ for a quiz. I had to drop it because I was failing. I wouldn't recommend him.

all he does is talk about himself and his friends--he hardly talks about how to actually improve your public speaking skills--he is not that great of a professor but if you do need help he is willing--if you take this class you will be videotaped when giving your speech(you have to buy the tape)and then you will have to critique yourself

All this guy does is talk about himself. He is not a good teacher and has a quiz almost every day. I had to drop this class because it was too time consuming and almost impossible to get a C on a quiz after studying 1-2 hours. Drop this class while you can, you'll be happy you did.
He wasn't horrible but strayed off topics and gave ridiculously hard quizzes at least twice a week. If you were a good speaker though you would pretty much get away with murder and get a C or if your lucky higher. If you were a bad speaker and didn't work your butt off then you prob. got a D or failed
Not your regular Prof. Challenging class. Time consuming. Very Interesting if you'r willing to take the challenge. I got an A for this class. At first that was simply imposssible, but as semester progressed I realized that if I am willing to spend some more time on it, it easy to end up with a decent grade.

Told me that I needed to loose weight if I wanted a job. I am 5'8" and was 160 lbs. I reported him to the dept chair and he remained at KU for 2 more decades.
No adviser had ever asked me how I felt about taking a course with a prof until Dr. Beaven (he was infamous). No doubt he was tough, but I thank him every day for pushing me. After never missing a class, participating, & doing all my work, despite performing poorly on his difficult tests, I did OK. He's a big part of why I'm now a college prof.
