Best prof Ive ever met. He is funny and very knowledgable. His mts are fair. The average is 70%. He always teaches us things in an easy way. Very recommended.
Good teacher!! Humorous and always ready for help. Although accent may cause confusion, but he try to explain all the concept well clearly.BTW,You do need to attend classes if you want a high mark.
I do not recommend this prof. He barely teaches anything, just skims through slides and ends class as early as a whole hour. Don't get too excited about that, you'll be spending that extra time reading your book because you need to learn the material somehow! He seems friendly, but still. Avoid if possible.
Not recommended. The material itself is not extremely difficult, however, the prof is really unclear and seems to contradict himself often (when it comes to expectations of exams etc). Also takes forever to hand back assignments, which can be really irritating if you don't know what he expects out of you. Also the lectures were very vague.
He is awesome and really funny!
material isnt hard as long as your read the textbook, but the prof just make everything so complicated and hard.. midterms u only get 45 minutes to do it ( once u finish the last question u got no time to double check)..final 2 hours all case studies questions, WAY too hard!! not recommended
Emrul has a wonderful personality and his humour made lectures enjoyable. However, lecture info was vague and he didn't go into detail as much as he needed to. His midterms and final were extremely fair, but time was a major issue for the midterms. Also, expectations for assignments were not clarified and TA marking was inefficient and horrible.
His midterms are fair as he goes over sample questions with the class. The final was easy if you knew how to apply the concepts you learned to real world situations, and did the recommended assignments. Overall, I would def recommend this prof
Good teacher. Funny, interesting, easy to understand. Helped me get by in a difficult class.
Class was challenging but if you apply yourself you will do fine. One of his best qualities is his ability to communicate with his students. Not at all patronizing or condescending, he talks to you like an equal. He is also much more in touch with the younger generation of students and did his best to make lectures entertaining.
His lectures are quite boring frankly, and material is not super difficult. He's a very nice guy though, and he'll adjust your mark to the highest possible grade, so thats a bonus!
The course was challenging, but with a positive work ethic one should do fine. The prof was nice, friendly, and understanding. Lectures, were useful and the prof always tried explaining concepts in the simplest way as possible, which made it easier of grasping econ theories. Assignments were useful and exams were fair. Def recommend prof
Extremely helpful and nice! He really wants the best for his students. He replies to emails within a day. His Midterms and finals were fair, as long as you attend lectures and read the textbook. However, he has a bit of an accent so it's hard to understand him at first. But overall he is an awesome prof and I would take another course with him!
Honest and a more-than-fair marker. :)
I did ok in this class, not great. I really did not like the textbook as it was way too long, and I found the concepts weren't simply stated. Also, the final exam was supposed to be cumulative but focused on only the last few chapters...so I didn't do too well because I studied concepts that weren't even tested. Emrul is entertaining however.
He loves economics, and that comes across in his lectures. Challenging class, but you do well if you attend lectures and tutorials, and study. Lots of material to cover. He gives you lots of opportunities to do well IF you show up for lectures. Sample questions are very helpful. He wants his students to do well.
He's a very chilled and funny guy but hard to understand him so READ THE TEXTBOOK. He's one of the few professors who truly want you to achieve by giving you several chances to bring your mark up!
Though the material was challenging, Emi tried his level best to help the class get a sound understanding of the course. He was generous with his marking and it was clear he wanted us to do well. His lectures would sometimes be dull, but he would always try to liven them up with a few jokes. Overall, he is a decent prof and a great person!
He is definitely one of the best instructors I have ever had. He keeps the lectures very interesting. He is funny which is a plus and he is very passionate about what he teaches. He is very knowledgable. I'd definitely recommend this prof and I am personally hoping to take more courses with him in the future. He is simply amazing.
Failed mid, didn't give up, received a satisfying final grade eventually. He was fair to every students, as long as you followed his instruction, made an effort to the course, you will survive. He can make a boring lecture interesting, good instructor.
Interesting prof. Failed on midterm but he did the adjustment for final grade. very flexible. The final exam is pretty fair and based on sample.
Great lecturer, very helpful and interesting. I recommend taking any course he teaches because his real world experience is shared and applied to what are usually boring topics. Enjoyed the class but it did require some hard work
Interesting course, nice prof. Less work but there will be a 5-10page paper to do ( only this one and it will help for to understand course material deeply). Midterm and final is not hard, especially for final, do it sample exam, It very useful!!
very goood
Professor has a good sense of humor and the midterm and final are not so hard.He is very friendly and kind to answer your any questions. However, the course is challenging and need to work hard after class. It is necessary to read textbook since the lecture slides are not very detailed. But you can learn a lot by taking this course.
Great Prof, you can do well in his class. Exams are easy and fair!
It's highly recommended to have name changed into English sounding name at least for you to be able to get a fair marks.
Worst prof I have ever taken, he is such a hypocrite dont even care his student, dont even speak english. I got the class's highest grade on midterm and also did good job on final, only received B.
He is an excellent prof. Even though I did not get a good grade, but I don't blame the prof for that. I just didn't study and the final was a bit hard. He is funny! He is clear in class about what he wants. He will also give you expert suggestions about studies whenever u need. Very knowledgable and makes the course interesting. Very recommended.
I liked him. His lecture is fun. I'd recommend he should use less heavy English words in exams. It's hard for international students to understand. But he is very helpful and a sweet guy. I hope to take more courses with him.
worst prof ever
Awesome prof! Highly recommended.
Very good. Will take more courses in future.
Course is a blend of theory and practice. Final was tough. Midterm was easy. The paper was a pain. Hasan tries hard to make difficult concepts easy. As long as u attend all the classes and understand the slides, u will be fine.
Great prof! Sweet and fun :)
Took this course with emrul several terms ago. He was nice but course was tough for me. I recommend going to class everyday otherwise u will end up with a bad grade like me :( emrul works hard and cares for students. he is a good person.
very good prof. easy and helpful
Nice Prof!
Most enjoyable Econ Prof! And he genuinely wants you to learn and do well! Majority of his teaching is grounded in theory and always applies it in the practicality of today's market. Attend lectures as he often puts emphasis on what he will test you and his notes/slides are clear, concise, and easy to follow
You can literally spend 2 hours reading text and not understanding a concept but it takes him 5 minutes to explain. His best quality is he can break down complex subject while being funny and using irl examples! Lecture prob all you need to do decent (ie. B). I still recommend reading the text if u want A- to differentiate urself from everyone else
Very tough course, but Emrul makes difficult concepts more easily understandable. Attend lectures and read the book!
very good prof, lectures are helpful and interesting. lecture slide are important.
Nice prof! Attend the lecture is very useful. The course is hard but he made it easy. TAKE HIS COURSE!!!!
Good and funny guy. Although the marking was a bit weird since they were marked by TAs
Not sure what happened to his previous profile but this prof was an amazing lecturer! good real life examples, can simplify complicated concepts to make it understandable while at the same time being funny! i always looked forward to this class!
Great Professor, is obviously passionate about finance. I enjoyed the lectures, he is knowledgeable and brought real world experience to what he was talking about. He covers a lot of material but outlines what is expected very clearly.
good prof, makes hard concept a lot easier than reading the textbook. fair exam gives you a lot of heads up about what's coming. I would take his class again :D
Good teacher, really passionate about what he teaches!
He is a excellent prof. the lecture was really useful and just attend his lecture and tutorial, you will be more than fine.
no words for u ,,,,,, just prefect, thx a lot
good prof
Best professor ever. Didn't fail any students in his class this semester if you do all the exams and assignments. 5 assignments and only 600 words each. Should take 355 with him!
good professor , nobody can fail
One of the simplest classes, made lectures interesting with examples. Would take a class with him again, if possible.
he is a very helpful peofessor
Best professor ever. Didn't fail any students in his class this semester if you do all the exams and assignments. There are 5 assignments and only 600 words each. Should take 355 with him!
As long as you read stuff on text book, and write notes during lectures, you will get what you deserve.
the best prof I have ever had, really good man
What a prof!!! So amazed!! Love him :)
Great Professor, the lecture is fun and educational. Very helpful!!! Real life projects and experiences
Enjoyed his lecture very much. He gave many real life examples and taught practical stuffs. Good sense of humor. Career advice at the last class was very helpful.
Probably the best prof out there. He knows what it's like to be a student and have a full course load so he's understanding that way if you just talk to him.
One of the best profs I've had at SFU. Good sense of humor. Very organized. His lectures are fun and very informative. Choose his class and "you will thank me later".
What a prof! Soooooo Good. Sfu needs more profs like him :) Love him :)
I'm very surprised to see what some people wrote about him! He is an amazing prof and works really hard for his students. I didn't do that well in his final but it's my fault. I will take his class again. I found him very inspirational.
He is funny and teaches with a lot of real life example. Gives career advice during the last class that's very helpful. Always there to help. I'm graduating, otherwise I would like to take more classes with him.
The course was tough for me but overall the lecture is pretty clear. Emrul works hard for students. I did not do well in final and waiting for the grade. Fingers crossed!
I really enjoyed this class it was my nest mark in university. This teacher was very helpful and very passionate about his work. He was very fair and I learned a lot. I would definitely take this class again.
Professor Emrul had a defined structure for the course, was clear about expectations and readings, and his comments/suggestions for those who attended the lectures was really helpful for midterm and finals preparation. His grading criteria for the short papers were concise and helps to learn outside the textbook via research. Good professor!
Emrul is very knowledgeable and approachable. His suggestions are helpful in exams prep. It was a little hard to understand him the first few classes because of his accent though.
Highly approachable and is open to any questions, not just questions about your course. Has very interesting content in the curriculum and is wants to help his students!
One of the best instructor I've ever encountered in Beedie. Very support, always be there for his students. He teaches a lot of practical stuffs, which gets students ready for the real world (As a final year student you would appreciate this a lot). Grading is very fair, you get exactly what you deserved. last but not least, great sense of humor!!
Very good prof for the class, makes the material easy to understand and retain the information. His midterm and final are not too difficult given that you study his slides. Make sure you take notes and attend every lecture, since he might give pop quizzes. Most useful finance class I've taken and probably one of the best profs for corporate finance
This class is not hard, just tried to finish all assignments by urself and reading lectures. This prof is Fair, and he really hates cheating, but he's nice and still give some cheating students marks... i think final exam is esay if u work by urself...
He replies emails really fast and very efficient at solving problem. He is hilarious and nice. His exam is fair if you do all the work by yourself (don't cheat) and attend lectures and tutorials. If you feel like you are failing the course, just try your best on exam and you will always be surprised by the mark you receive.
Thank you Emrul. One of the most influential lecturers I've ever had, thanks to him my political and economic views are more eclectic. I thoroughly enjoyed the class with him and I hope he continues to teach.
I'm glad I got to take a class with Emrul. He's a good lecturer and adds a great amount of perspective to the base content of the class. The lectures can be a bit dry, but Emrul has a good sense of humour. He's very clear on what you should study, he drops hints every week as for what could end up on the final.
Emrul is not bad overall despite a few things. His course is a little bit disorganized and he sometimes makes mistakes. The instructions for the assignment and project are not clear and he doesn't want questions for the project. However, the good thing is that the MT and final are fair as long as you attend lectures, pay attention. Would recommend
His lectures were interesting as he tried to incorporate personal experiences to make the concepts more memorable (which did work). The assignments were relatively easy (600 words), but TH questions were TOUGH. Only had a final (45%) which was fair if you followed along with tutorial questions and assignment Qs.
Emrul is the best prof I have ever seen in my SFU career. He makes finance really fun even though the course is really tough. I didn't really like finance until I took his class. He inspired me and showed me the real world of finance. Highly recommended.
He is an awesome pro, always use his own examples to help us understand materials. Always finish class early and expect us to read. He gave the assignments not only for testing but also for helping us learning class. Definitely will take him again
Great experience having Emrul for Enterprise Finance at BCIT. Assignments allowed the material to sink in before the exam. Course was very exam heavy. Lectures did start to get dry after the first hour in a 2 hour lecture. Great instructor, used personal examples during lectures which were entertaining. Would definitely enjoy having Emrul again.
Emrul is a very engaging and enthusiastic professor. He cares greatly about the learning of his students, in terms of how the course material will help them in their future careers. This is why all of the lecture material and assignments are extremely practical and similar to the work one would be doing as a financial analyst.
Good teacherexplain concept clearly and based on real world experience.
Emrul is an outstanding instructor. He uses real world experience and examples to help you better grasp the material in the course. Cares about his students and is willing to stay behind if you have any additional questions.
Emrul is a grate prof and has a sense of humor. He gives examples to make the students understand the concept well. he knows exactly what he is doing and does his job well. Speak out the class to get the full participation mark. I was shy to speak out during the class.
My second time taking class with Emrul. He is nice and gives amazing lectures. He will tell you the difference of using the concepts in studying and in real life, and also gives real examples. For this class, u need to put a lot effort to have a good grade, but what u learned is very useful.
Great professor, gives us lots of real-world examples and really tries to make us understand the fundamentals rather than memorize a bunch of stuff. Tough class, but worth it.
one of the most inspirational lecturer at SFU! take BUS 413 with him! you will learn a lot although you are going to die in the process due to so much material that he covers. but it is all very practical and important! would definitely take his class again! he has such great tenacity in the success of his students, which is AWSOME!
He's really funny, I think he usually teaches higher level econ and business courses but he was a decent prof for Econ 102. If you understand the concepts and take time to study you'll do well. Not much homework, and the tests were straightforward enough.
Posts his notes online, but attending he may give some hints and tips that might be useful, good joker and enjoyable lecutre, some homework but manageable, great guy.... says clear a lot so if you cant stand people repeating words then maybe dont attend the lecture i guess
He's a pretty funny guy and makes the lecture interesting. A little bit of homework each week, but definitely manageable. If you show up to the lecture and take notes, you probably won't need to read the textbook.
He changed the grading scheme half way through the semester. Goes off on massive tangents. He disagrees with the textbook and gives you contradicting information, leaving you unclear about what you are meant to answer on the final exam.
He is a generous instructor. Attending his classes would help you have a better understanding of economy. The grading scheme is generous and you can get good grades by hard work.
Emrul is a very inspiring prof who cares for students a lot. His real life examples are gems and he is very funny when he talks. Not boring at all. Passionate about Finance. Highly recommended.
Best if you are well-inclined in investments. Is pretty straightforward; likes to bring in real-life examples. Best if you pre-read before class. A good prof for Bus 315 in terms of difficulty, availability, and clarity.
Now I know why people fight to take this class because Emrul teaches it. The material is hard, and so much time has to be put into it in order to do well in the class, but its worth it. Being able to go to a class with someone who knows and cares about the material so much is a blessing.
I liked that EMRUL is pretty funny and tried to keep things interesting and simple. He was also honest when we were going through slides that were boring. Well recommended.
Professor Emrul is a fantastic instructor. He does his best to keep the material and learning environment entertaining and interesting. He always is upbeat and has great chemistry with his students. The material was well presented and correlated well with the textbook. I would recommend him for any student interested in the field.
Professor Hasan made econ one of my favourite classes. Honestly, this class isn't a difficult one and perfect for those who have no previous understanding of the material. Yes, it can get confusing when he argues against the textbook during lectures, but I found his perspective as useful.
Emrul is absolutely awesome at teaching but sometimes the course matter seems a little bit rushed. This is a rare occurrence but I did find myself hung up a couple of times due to this. I believe Emrul should teach more courses.
You could tell Emrul genuinely cares about making the material interesting, enjoyable and comprehensible to everyone. Great attitude about teaching. Seems he loves his job.
Lectures were extremely clear, fun, thoughtful and well organized. Overall Emrul presented the material exceptionally well. Best prof I had so far at SFU.
Emrul is the best prof I've even met at SFU. I'm not sure what other people are saying here but I love his class and I'm going to take more courses with him. He never rushes the class and gives good examples that helps me to understand better. I don't even have to read the book if I take notes. Well recommended.
Emrul is very effective in his teaching. Not many professors are able to stimulate the students to the extent Emrul does, so he provides a great environment to learn. As a teacher, Emrul has great communication skills in that explanations are short, helpful, and entertaining. God bless him.
Emrul was a great teacher for my advanced finance class. He explains everything in depth, is an easy marker and stresses the importance of knowledge to make sure you understand the core foundation of the material instead of just doing homework for the sake of it. Great teacher, really funny guy, would take him again 100%!
Honestly, Emrul was one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are very engaging due to his constant use of his personal life examples to explain course concepts. His positive attitude always kept the class spirits up and made us enjoy coming to lectures. BUS 207 is kind of a hard course on its own but with Emrul it's way better.
Emrul had amazing lectures and was very clear about what was important to know for the exams. Nothing tricky and everything was very clear. He explained everything very well and did not rush concepts. He was teaching many courses but made sure that he was very accessible to all of his students. Amazing prof overall!
Emrul truly cares about students and it shows during his lectures, he makes an effort to try and describe things in ways we understand. This semester he had like 1000 students and at times he seemed a bit rushed. 1st midterm seemed kind of unrelated to lecture content, but the 2nd midterm and final were crystal clear in terms of criteria.
overall great prof im glad I had emrul.. ahh the first midterm was kinda mean.. but even though he didn't need to he created an alternative grading scheme which kept me motivated. "Could you zoom in a bit more?" "Could you move closer a bit more?" ded.
Honestly, one of the most approachable profs at SFU. Funny, and teaches the core concepts really well. 207 is generally a hard course, but with Emrul, you're golden.
Emrul is really funny and honestly don't know any way to teach 207 any better. He goes through only exam related topics during his lectures so you don't waste any time there. He DOESN'T use a textbook and he doesn't have answers on his slides, so you have to attend lecture to know how to do the aspects that he's testing on.
I enjoyed having Emrul as a prof. He seems to genuinely care about his students. However, he did seem a bit unorganized at times, and he could maybe improve by making his own lecture slides for the course. Overall though, he was crystal clear on what to expect on exams, gave good examples in class, and kept the 3 hour lecture entertaining.
I just loved the way Emrul teaches 207. He is inspirational and entertaining. 3 hours go really fast while you also learn a lot. Liked the way he connected personal experience with econ theories.
Emrul was a great teacher, funny guy as well. Highly recommended for an intro or even advanced econ course. Respect him and he will respect you, he's a very fair teacher.
Emrul is a funny guy and I enjoyed listening to him speak. Lectures were kind of weird at the beginning when he would let his TA fill the empty time to lecture us on something completely unrelated to economics. It was bizarre to say the least but thankfully it was dropped after a few weeks WHEW. We were also promised cake if we were good. Well?
Emrul is a very nice instructor who seemed to care for his students, and showed passion for teaching. He was very proficient when using real life examples to integrate with economic perspectives learned in this course. This course is not an easy course as there is a lot of theory, graphs, and calculations. He mostly tests from lecutres not textbook
He is a funny prof that tries to create an interesting & engaging learning environment. To some extent, he did. He clearly stated the scope of exam and followed it as promised. And you do have an option to recover your bad midterm grade by kicking butt to work hard in final. Overall, a informative lecture and friendly prof himself.
He made lectures very interesting, very very different from the usual lectures i attend. He also teaches with a passion, always giving real life personal experiences that we can understand and relate to.
Emrul is a very fair prof. His (315) lectures can be very dense but he does his best to keep them interesting. Attending lectures is not mandatory but highly recommended and makes studying a lot easier. He has passion for the subject, loves teaching and cares about his students. Only had him for 315 but would definitely take more classes with him.
Highly recommended. Great teaching ability and makes class worthwhile.
Great prof, provides lots of help. Recommend to take his class
WORST PROF EVER. AVOID.
Emrul is the best prof I had at SFU. He motivates students to a level that you start loving the subject materials. The course was very tough, but he made it enjoyable.
Econ355w had so much take-home and in-class assignments. The work was heavy but the instructor's dedication towards academic honesty is amazing. He made some assignments in-class so that students cannot hire outside people to write the assignment for them. I liked it. 5 star for that :)
Emrul is the best deal! He is never boring in the lectures. The content was difficult for me but I liked the way he explained things. Highly recoomended if you want to do CFA in future.
I had Emrul last term for my Bus315 and he is simply fabulous. Never seen a better prof that him. As a finance major, it's very important for me to understand the concepts and Emrul satisfies that. I am highly indebted to him. God bless him :)
Emurl teaches really well. I like his teaching style very much. The phenomenon in class is easygoing but we have never missed any important point.
Emrul's a good prof with much experience and enthusiasm for the course material. However, his teaching style is somewhat difficult to follow for people who don't have a strong finance background. Having said that, he goes over the lectures very quickly and provides very little material for exam preparation. Beware, homework is easier than exams!
Emrul is great. He knows the stuff and is very approachable. I would definitely take his class again. BTW he actually looks at this stuff.
Professor Emrul is an amazing guy. He gives students enough time during office hours when needed. I was having hard time with the course Econ 102, but he convinced me that I can do well and showed me how to study for the final exam.
I took the course with Emrul in 2016 and I am very grateful how his course helped me pass my level 1 CFA exam. He goes deep into the concepts and that helped me a lot. God bless
Emrul is my favourite prof at SFU. I took 2 courses with him: one econ and one finance and he teaches both with proper diligence. His courses are tough, but he makes them easy my explaining well. He is also always available when needed.
Great prof
Will take again. he is funny and gives amazing examples. never bored.
Great Prof. Really funny but the lectures are content heavy and difficult to keep up with if you don't do your own notes before hand.
Amazing prof! Easily one of the best Finance profs I have ever had! Made lectures very interesting and is hilarious. I would take again in a heart beat!
Emrul is awesome! His teaching technique is great. More profs should be like him! He's absolutely hilarious. He'll crack a joke during lectures once in a while to keep things from getting dull. It was a three hour lecture, but he made it completely worth it. Would definitely take one of his classes again!
Amazing prof and class!! After taking this class I realized that I wanted to specialize in economic development! I have never loved an econ this much before! There's a few writing assignments which are fair, and the midterm and final are fair.
Emrul is an amazing Prof. I would highly recommend taking any course he offers. His lectures were incredibly interesting and he made the course very enjoyable. Very fair with his marking. One of the best profs at Douglas College.
Very passionate instructor and he works very hard to make sure students understand the concepts. Available outside class too.
He is a nice professor! I really like his course. If you study hard, you will get really good grade!
The course is quite straightforward as Emrul does not test much math, it is simply equations of some economic models other than that its just reading, you get it you do well.
He is a really good prof who tried to help everyone in his class. If you get in trouble with the assignments or midterms(I hope not), then you should attend every tutorial to get extra bonus marks. If this is your last class, then you'd better let him know it, since he is very kind to his students. In short, he is a professional and helpful prof.
Emrul is very knowledgeable and is one of the far better instructors I have had at SFU.
Awesome professor but the course is really tough.
Emrul is a great prof. He is fair about what he puts on the tests and very accessible for help.
He really cares about his students. During office hours, he puts in the time and explains the concepts thoroughly to make sure you really understand. He is a great prof and would definitely have him for my other courses. Make sure you go to every lecture. His exams are fair game and he's a funny, nice guy. Would like more profs like him.
BEST PROF EVER. Hilarious lectures and very knowledgeable. Explained concepts in an easily understandable way. Exams are a fair game, so class participation really matters! Emrul truly cares about his students. Goes beyond during office hours by giving career tips and advice if it's your last semester. Recommend 100%
Emrul is one of the best professors if not THE best, you'll be glad you took any of his class
Didn't actually teach the material. Rather he would provide an overview of the material and then expect you to somehow learn it. Exams were not reflective of the course work. Watch out UBC. Glad he won't be at SFU anymore.
nice prof
Emrul is the reason why I chose Finance as a career. His lectures are extremely informative and also enjoyable. He truly cares about his students as he always gives us advice on how to prep for interviews and life in general. Not easy by any means, need to show up to do well, but you will get the most out of his courses vs any other. UBC is lucky
Best prof ever. Tough course, but his teaching is amazing :) Learned a lot of real life stuffs.
probably the best professor for BUEC and ECON courses, very interesing lecture combining with real events, fun to learn!
Emrul is a great instructor. The exam is fair!
I've taken two courses with Emrul so far and he is the best professor i've ever taken with. He is so passionate and always be willing to help students. He cares so much about his students and he is very knowledgeable because He is a former CFA. If you want to learn real stuff, take it with him!
I really like his teaching style!!!!! I would like to take his other course again!!!!
Clear exam range
He is the best Econ prof I had in my undergrad. I have taken two courses with him and learnt a lot. Through his teaching style I developed a huge interest in the course content. Also he makes the course content very relevant to the todays market. He teaches with a lot of passion.
Amazing Lectures
Good prof!
Emrul's classes are't easy because the content itself is tough grasp. If you pay attention in class, take notes and do practice questions, you will do well. He will always take time to explain concepts if you are having trouble and cares about his students. Formula sheets aren't given in exams, but you will survive without it. Great prof overall!
Emrul is an amazing prof, probably one of the best I have had at SFU. Regarding the structure of the class, there is an individual assignment, group project, midterm, final, and participation/attendance marks. Tests can be tough, but are very easy to prepare for - he gives a good heads up on what to focus on.
Emrul was hands down one of the BEST profs at SFU. I did not do well on the first assignment or the midterm, but he gives ample opportunity for you to do well if you work extra hard for the final. He was also extremely fair. I am so sad that he's being taken away from us by UBC.
polite and kind, hard-working on helping you
You need to self study in this class, otherwise it's difficult to learn
He is new to UBC but he is a great teacher. Our class is only 50 minutes long each day so he kind of has to rush in more classes but he explains the concepts well. I will recommend him highly.
Emrul works hard for students and he is very eager to help after class. Highly recommended.
I like his enthusiasm for econ. He discusses trade theory with easy examples from real world that helps me to remember the outcomes.
AMAZING prof, and he really cares about his students. Stuffs that I learned form this class with Emrul can also be applied in real life. For example, Emrul gives valuable advices on selecting and buying mutual funds from his own investment experience.
He is a really good prof. I like his teaching style, and it's easy to get a good grade.
He can efficiently communicate his knowledge of finance and economics with his students. I never felt like missing his lectures even on my off days. Great Prof!
Great ProfTook both his ECON383 and ECON355w. Although there is a lot content in the lectures, you can get good grade if you listen carefully in his class and do enough practices. I like his teaching style, always teach us by using real life examples-show us the bank website to find things that correlated with concepts.
Great professor. Truly inspirational and takes the time to explain everything in class. Inspired me to pursue my CFA. Fair exams. Miles better than someone like Blazenko, which I didn't do too well in but exceled in this class because of Emrul's teaching method. Do not skip class!! He guarantees you'll do well as long as you come to class, true.
Professor Hasan is the best professor I met during university. Super clear on grading criteria, and gives amazing lecture. Makes you become interest in finance and Econ in his own way. His investment class is super help in passing CFA level 1 exam. Take his class and you won't regret it! Truly inspirational!!
Emrul has been the best prof I've had at UBC! He's so passionate about his students' success. Taught practical things that we can use in our career and focused on really helping us understand what we need to know. Gave me a great foundation for graduate courses, and helped so much with my 490 paper by giving econometrics ideas and new techniques.
Dr. Hasan is enthusiastic and caring. While he goes off on tangents or tells irrelevant stories at times, they're generally funny and add to the class atmosphere. Participation matters as there are iclickers. He genuinely cares about students, respects mental-health, and makes up for lost lectures by doing them online.
I would highly recommend taking a class with Emrul. He truly cares about his students and will take the time and effort to make sure they understand a concept. He makes you work hard for your marks, but he is always clear about what to expect on a test or exam. Wish I had taken more courses with him.
ECON 425 with Emrul was my favourite course. It is a good mix of theoretical and applied. Emrul emphasizes the real-world and intuitive meaning behind numbers and not just surface level understanding. He also made sure to incorporate real life case studies and experiments which was very useful to learn about.
Emrul cares about his students and focuses on the useful and applicable aspects of econometrics rather than on convoluted details. For instance, he highlighted the importance of following past literature and using similar control variables. I found that advice, and others he gave us extremely applicable while writing my ECON 490 thesis.
Emrul tried his best to be hands on & teach us real life application of 315 concepts. He also gave us a lot of advice for our career. Despite being busy, he made himself available for help whenever possible outside lecture. I got below average for midterm and still landed an A with hardwork and his help. His last lec was so inspiring I almost cried
My advices are: participation mostly comes out of piazza, do that instead of trying to do every homework perfectly; there are at least 3 group projects which are a pain but he is fair and takes peer evaluation into account; doesn't really use econlab or textbook so just review lectures. He is not bad and he is fair. His english is fine too.
This course is difficult but useful and topics are interesting. The textbook helps a lot in understanding the materials. The prof is really caring and supportive, always talks about interesting things outside class. And the textbook chapters are rearranged by the prof so that it became MUCH more easier to understand.
Emrul is an upbeat guy which is pretty refreshing for a 4th year econometrics course. Stay on top/ahead of the readings (seriously) and go to lecture, ask questions and you will be fine. There aren't any curveballs, just do the work required well. Emrul himself is friendly and tries to divert some time to practical uses of theory which is helpful
Professor Hasan is the professor that I truly admire. Besides his caring for student mental health, great willingness to give career advice, His class is full of joy and wisdom. Highly recommend taking his Econ355 at UBC; learning International trade models and policy tools gives you a great advantage in doing Macro-analysis as an Econ student.
Added entire class to his CFA prep course email list. Attendance and participation through Piazza are a significant part of the grade for some reason. Claims he doesn't use test banks, tries to sound scary and say he will catch cheaters, then proceeds to use test banks for all MCQ Individual + group assignment + a quiz within 2 days next week lol
Emrul is a gem of a teacher. He adapted to online teaching really well. This is the only class I attended synchronously. He teaches real life finance stuffs those are very important for us. I recommend him for BUS315 if you are planning to write CFA exam in future.
Amazing teacher! He listens to students carefully and answers all the questions we ask on chat which hardly happens in my other online courses we are taking due to COVID. He really made the course very interesting and I learned a lot so far. Exams are hard but he gives schemes so that you can improve on later.
I really want to do econ major now after taking this class with Emrul. I had a different thought last term when I took Econ101 with another prof. He makes lectures very interesting with a lot of real-life applications. Highly recommended. Will take more classes with him in the future.
The exams are hard and his last exam was on the last day of class. But he really cares about his students and put in the effort to help them. This is what I love about him. He gives options to improve our overall grade by offering different weight transfers, so I think he is fair.
I am retaking this course in my 4th year, and Emrul has been the best prof I've had at UBC. He's so inspiring, and I learned a lot from him over the whole term. He taught us some practical things too that we can use in our careers. He also gave me some great suggestions about my graduate programs I am planning to take in the future.
Emrul is the best professor I met at SFU. His grading criteria are a bit confusing but he gives an amazing lecture. He boosted my interest in finance. This class is super helpful in passing the CFA level 1 exam that I am taking in August 2020. Take his class and you won't regret it.
There have been lots of ups and downs in this course that I took with Dr. Hasan. It seems he genuinely cares for his students, but the course load was high for me. Maybe because the course is online. I still learned a lot, and I am looking forward to taking more courses with Dr. Hasan in the future.
Loved the lectures and the contents. Exams were hard and had occasional mistakes which can be frustrating. Knowing Emrul from this class, I blame the COVID-related fatigue and online learning environment even though he adapted very well. His teaching is very smooth even online. Highly recommended!
Dr. Hasan is the best prof I ever had. He has so much intelligence and humour, and is a great guy to know outside of academia. He is a world class lecturer, and cares about helping his students. He appreciates hard work and also rewards it. I did very well in his class because I worked hard, listened to lectures, and asked questions. He's the best.
Took Bus 315 with Emrul, he's an amazing prof and is super clear about what will be tested. Exams are over all extremely fair, he tells you during lecture exactly what type of written questions will be on exams. The class does have a lot of deliverables there were weeks we had a quiz, homework and group project all due with the same week.
very arrogant professor that spends half of lecture just telling stories about his past. Tests are easy however.
Exams are hard and there were 3 term exams. But he really cares about his students, and gave student options to improve their overall grade by moving some weight to future exams. Lecturers are entertaining too. Learned a lot about CFA which is a plus.
I never missed his class because he was entertaining and he shows important topics that will be tested in the CFA exam. Also taking the SFU CFA prep class taught by him. Online classes are hard but at least this is the class where I could listen and relax. Highly recommended.
Amazing prof! Loved the classes. A little more about other alternative investments would be better but I learned a lot. Also found the exams easy.
Its a 4 credit course, so get ready to work. But if you are taking the class, do yourself a favour and take the class with Emrul. Theres a lot of work but you will learn along the way.
His teaching is ok. Goes in tangent sometimes. Very tough course.
Emrul is one of the best profs I've had at SFU. His lectures are engaging, well thought out and easy to understand despite the content being a bit heavy. He makes sure students understand every topic and is happy to answer any questions students have. Exams are extremely fair and he tells you what to focus on. Enjoyed taking this class with him.
Get ready for Emrul because he will kill you, but what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. BUS 315 was probably the most overwhelming class I have taken. He is a wonderful professor, he is supportive and explains things well. But, he will overload the *** out of you with the amount of work. This class was like taking two classes in one.
I took BUS315&413 with Emrul in 2021 Spring and Summer. He is the best finance teacher I have met in my life. He not only taught me a wide range of finance materials, covering the majority of the CFA curriculum, which built me a solid financial foundation for my future life but also strongly cared and helped me in life whenever I needed help.
I took this course in UBC 2019 W, and he was the best ECON prof I have ever met. His lectures were most engaging and I certainly learned a lot. I aced it with grade of 94. Even in my internships the trade models are of great help for me to have a better understanding of why my senior managers can make such decisions. I strongly recommend it!
I took Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics in 2018W. That was an excellent experience. Dr. Hasan integrated a lot of interesting real-life cases with knowledge points. I applied what I learned during my internship in investment banking, connecting different economic information to give in-depth analysis and recommendations
This'll always be one of the best courses I've taken. Professor Hasan is very passionate about teaching economics and gives clear feedback about writing research papers and presenting on upper-level economics that still helps me today. Supportive professor, great lectures, and facilitates the most fun discussions on international macroeconomics.
Great prof! Very caring and is straight up. Wants students to succeed and knows the right way to do so. Studied a lot himself so he has all the tips and tricks up his sleeve for success that you will need - talk to him!
Excellent teacher. He has obviously been teaching investments for a long time, because he knows what areas people tend to struggle with, and spends more time on those areas. I would choose to take another class with him again even if I didn't plan on taking that course because I think Emrul, no matter the course, will teach me something valuable.
Umm, how do I even express my distaste for this class? His test structure is good but god the homework. 7 HW assignments, over 70 multi-part questions each, including excel given on short notice. Very stressful. No time. Bad class. Said no final but gave a take-home assignment so is a liar :(. Oh and he likes to clap at people in class so behave.
In my opinion, this class started out not bad. We had 2 group assignments which we were well aware of. However, the MyLab questions were given on short notice 60-70 per MyLab homework (crammed mostly in second half of the course). The worst part, the take home assignment. Even though it was 6 essay questions, you need to use full 6 hours no break.
One of the goated profs in econ & beedie. Just beware that he'll unexpectedly assign 80 questions on short to no notice. :)
Haven't even finished the course yet but the first month has been terrible. His lectures you don't really learn anything in, as he makes you do in-class assignments are useless you don't learn from them, starts class 10 mins late then speeds through lectures without giving a clear point on what to focus on, he doesn't even follow his own syllabus.
I do not know where such high ratings come from, but this prof does not know how to teach. what we cover in the classes was not in the homework, and h/w was given on short notice so you will have to block two days just to get it done. one of the most disorganized profs that barely replies to emails.
funny like my dad but I failed my midterm
I was struggling alot in the beginning but he and the TAs were rlly helpful during office hours to help guide me and answer my questions. it was tough but the hardwork payed off after getting back our midterm marks. i think as long as you go to office hours, take detailed notes, and do all the HW, you'll do well.
Will miss prof Emrul Hasan! His lectures are engaging and always uses real life applications for his topics. His midterm exam was very similar to the mylab and group assignments while average is low. I got my first midterm with over 90% with this prof. Go through all the homework and mylab and you'll be set for the midterm. Lovely guy and cheers!
Fine, he shows up late to class, mylabs on short notice and goes on rants. Lectures and homework consistent with midterm. Tells you what's going to be on the exam. Has charisma and a sense of humor. Generous with marking. This guy is as smart and qualified as SFU profs will get and gives real-world advice. Take him if you're not scared to work hard
never once have I wanted to fall asleep in his lectures
finished our final today but nice guy
Great guy, and tells great stories. Gives real world examples to relate to material. Assignments were fair and gave us enough time to complete them. Funny guy, lectures were always interesting. Liked how he would do in class examples, then dive into the material. Truly understands his students, definitely recommend.
had a great time in his class and his exams/assignments were fair, directly taken from the textbook/mylabs
I honestly thought I was going to get a C+ for this course since I was below the average for the group assignment and midterm, but hurray! Curve saved my grade. Best prof ever!!!
What an absolute South Asian Gem! He made the final easy (concept-based) and similar to the group assignments so his students could do well. He gives a lot of homework but he is flexible with the deadlines if you ask for an extension beforehand. Loved his jokes, especially about cricket and the baby milk formulae (iykyk). Would recommend 10/10
This professor is the best I have had so far! He is just too good. His explanations, examples and practicality is outstanding. This is one of the most useful courses you will take in your program but only if you are doing it with Emrul. I highly highly recommend him!
Out of the other bus 207 prof, the prof was the best for me because of his grading structure. His grading isnt 100% exam based, and if it was, I would of failed. I failed my midterm & was below average by ALOT but came thru in the final. It was because he has assignments part of our grade to save it & made final worth more if you did better on it
nice guy, but could have been a better teacher and try to be more prompt with attendance
He is caring and always try to be in his student's shoes. His teaching is fun as he brings real life examples to showcase the concepts. He is very friendly. Thanks to him I got my first A+ at SFU.
He was a good prof. Funny. Engaging. Man knows it all.
The course is hard but it was one of the relevant courses I was able to apply to my life. His real-life examples, stories, and teachings made the class very fun and engaging. At times he's a bit unorganized but it wasn't a big deal as you just have to review the assignments, mylab and textbook to succeed in the course.
Heads up, there are 80 question MyLabs for each chapter, prof is a lil disorganized, and crazy group assignments. All in all though, prof was funny. I failed bus 207 before with Karen Ruckman and this man pulled me through the mud. Thanks Emrul, missing you everyday
Prof. Hasan genuinely cares about the success of his students. He knows the material very well so he doesn't usually teach from slides but rather takes a more organic approach to teaching. He is very good at simplifying tough concepts by drawing his own graphs and diagrams. Easily one of my favorite profs at SFU. A very nice person in general.
I didn't like the guy at the start. He skipped two weeks of our schedule due to absences, but as the weeks went on, his philosophy of respect, and justice where due reflected. All exams and projects were fair, and lectures were engaging despite the difficulty of its content. I kind of owe him one because he made economics fun again. Thanks Emrul.
I don't normally give a 5/5 ratings but Emrul definitely deserves it. He makes class fun and explains the concepts very well. The course itself is hard but he made the lectures entertaining so the 3 hour classes didn't feel that long. However you need to put in the work for a good mark. I totally recommend taking 207 with him!
Professor Hasan brings the course material to life with engaging real-world examples. Though the workload is demanding, his teaching style and commitment to student success make BUS207 an enriching experience. unstuckstudy ai was a helpful study tool alongside the course resources.
Amazing lecturer. 3 hour lectures passed by like nothing, very engaging and funny but also very passionate about what he teaches. Provides real world examples which help relate to the course content. Favourite professor I've had so far in my undergrad. Emrul is a gem.
Professor Emrul is an outstanding instructor for 207. His lectures were engaging, connecting real-world concepts to bring managerial economics to life. The course is challenging and requires a lot of effort to get a good mark, but Professor Emrul's teaching style makes the material much more approachable and fun.
Highly recommend Dr. Hasan. Come to lectures, as they are engaging and he gives real-world insights for everything. Dr. Hasan wants you to pass and he wants you to succeed. If he is teaching a class, take it.
Emrul is an outstanding professor who makes learning difficult content so much easier through carefully explaining and applying the concepts described. There really is nobody better to take BUS 207 with.
Professor Emrul is a great lecturer. His classes are clear and entertaining, and his tests are fair. He is very supportive in both academic and professional settings and always willing to help during his office hours. I'd recommend that anyone take his courses.
