the subject is hard but she makes sure that everyone is on the same page she actually cares about her students shes the best
Very caring professor who won't let anyone get left behind. Makes sure you understand the material and is willing to work w/ you.
Very nice teacher. Lectures and notes are really good in detail. Will do anything to help you out. Just show up everyday and you will pass. Tests are multiple choice, and everything you need to know are in your notes. Just study, and you will pass.
Awesome teacher!! She always tries to help everyone so that nobody will get left behind. She has very detailed notes and lectures, and everything you need to know is always right in front of you.
she is nice...passing this class is easy if you just study notes, but You will have to dedicate yourself by reading textbook, going over your notes several times, and preparing for the essay questions to get A or B from her.
Could be her accent, but once she gets in your mind you won't get her out, nor would you want to. Prof. Allen is a WONDERFUL professor who truly cares, loves to teach, and does it well. Exams are all based off her lectures, so take good notes. You'll def. enjoy the class too.
Maala is a really cool person to listen to, she's really pretty and really tall, but extremely hard!!! Don't think you can go into this class not ready to read/study/pay attention. Her test kill you so BEWARE!!! Just FYI, before the semester ended, we had about 15 people remaining...
if you enjoy learning bio, she is the teacher. one of the best teacher I ever had. nice, intersting lectures. her test are hard so study needed. she cares about har students and a perfect communicator.
Her tests are horrible... you have to read the whole book. She is a nice person but not an easy teacher
Hard tests, and couldnt really understand through her British accent.

she was a very cool teacher and would help me out when ever she could. But most of the time i was distracted by how hot she was....mmmmm

mrs. allen was the best techer ive had at fullerton.
Awesome teacher. She's good at explaining, cares about her students/material. She is always willing to answer questions. She's funny, always in a good mood. She does a good job teaching a difficult class. You have to read the book and study the notes...the book alone isn't enough. But all in all...great teacher.
The class itself was a bit of a challenge otherwise the Mrs. Maala Allen exhibits great qualities that I look for in a professor. She is very intuative, helpful, clear, and understands everything that she's talking about unlike some teachers who you feel like you know more then they do. On top of all these great qualities she's also pretty good looking. Summing things up you'll have: Eye Candy and a great teacher with a difficult class. GOOD LUCK!
The coolest teacher I've ever had- She's very helpful and understanding- if you do your work, you'll pass the class easily! She's a great lecturer!!!
i wish allen all the best in her life. she is basically the best biology teacher for me at this particular time. i don't know if i will come across anybody better but for sure she is excellent. trust me.
Mrs. Allen is by far the BEST professor I've ever had! She's friendly, funny, and her enthusiasm in the class is contagious. She gives interesting lectures and LOVES to answer questions. She's always willing to meet if you need extra help. She always knows what she's takling about. Just take good notes and read the book and you could easily pass!
shes a really nice, funny and helpful teacher but you have to work for it to get an A, she curves the final grade so that 65% is still a C
Mrs. Allen - the sexiest teacher ever! Besides that, this class is very difficult. She says only 40% will finish with a C or better(that's not just her, but Bio 170 in general). To be successful, study, take good notes, do all the reading, and turn in all assignments and labs. I got a B.
I have immense respect for Maala Allen and think that she is a superb teacher. She communicates the concepts clearly, makes the class enjoyable, and is very thorough. Attend lecture, take notes, read,do your work, and study... She is a great teacher but she can only give you the tools to succeed...you have to choose to implement them.Good Luck! ;-)
She's really hot. On the other hand, she's really helpful and she lets you come in whenever you like to her office hours. Her exams are really hard, but if you know the study guide she gives you, you'll be fine. Her english accent is as hot as her body, by all means take her.
She's really really nice! kind of hard.. but she is a really good teacher!
She is great!! She is really nice and a wonderful teacher! She makes everything interesting and easy to understand! She is one of the best teachers I have ever had!! TAKE HER!!!
best bio teacher ever! she is soooooo good! tests r hard but she is an awesome teacher. totally reccomend her, she actuallu cares about her students
First of all, very tall and attractive. It was cool that she had a strong British accent. Lab exercises are easy if you follow the procedures but lecture tests are pretty hard and you actually have to ready the book, review notes, and concentrate during lectures.
She's the best professor ever! I love her class and I actually learned alot.
Great teacher! I learned a lot from her class, but definitely not an easy class. She is very helpful! Need to read the pages she assigns! Take her!
Shes a great teacher. Easy to understand. Approachable. Final isnt mandatory unless youre not doing well in class or miss a test. Very easy class and interesting too. She does take attendance so go to class.
an amazing professor. she is so knowlegable when it comes to biology and so helpful when u do not understand. though my major is biochem im not the smartest person in the world. she made everything so clear and understandable. TAKE HERRRRRRRRRR FOR SUREEE I LOVE HER!!SHE'S SOOOO NICE TOO!!!
This class is for science majors, I am a business major. She tried to convince me not to take the class because she deemed it hard and demanding, she was so right. The work load is extremely heavy, tests are hard but fair, and the lectures are VERY informative. Don't miss a single class or you will fall behind. I hate science but loved her class!
i love this proffessssor sooo much... she made everyone understand everything and encouraged every student to voice their thoughts and opinions. she is sooo smart... she graduated from yale.. and that is why she knowss everything. but dont get intimidated by that fact. she is sooooooo helpful.. and caring
The best teacher I have ever had. She has so much passion for what she teaches and really strives to give her students every tool possible to do well in the class. The class requires a lot of studying but she is extremely fair in grading and all around a great person!
This woman is awesome!! She explains everything clearly, is present all through lab sessions and is always in her office when she says she will be. This is the teacher to take for any class!!
Allen is truly a gem. Her methods are more than enough to understand the material; however, I notice that with this class people struggle to keep up with the sheer volume of it. DON'T TAKE IT IF YOU AREN'T A PRE-MED, BIO or other major for which this course is required. Take interest, DON'T MISS CLASS, do ALL assignments = A grade. Stress required!
Professor Allen is the most amazing biology teacher! She is clear in her teaching, and very helpful. She makes the class interesting by joking around. Very enthusiastic about teaching the subject. If you read the book and review your lecture notes you should do well in the class, but reading is a must to get a good grade on exam
Allen IS the best professor I have had so far! Go to all the lectures and labs, do the assignments (she tells you to go back to specific pages and read in detail) and lab reports and you will do fine. She uses lots of examples and condenses the textbook by a lot and her accent is cool
She is a fabulous Profs I've ever had with her charming British accent! She loves to teach and sometimes she mentions to her 2 children in her lectures that it looks interesting! She really cares about her students. With studing her lecture notes & the book u won't have problem.See her in her office hours. Her tests r hard! She is tall 2! Have fun :)
Amazing. Keeps you engaged, loves being asked questions, and loves to ask questions that help you comprehend the material. Yes she is one of the more difficult professors, but if you really want to learn Biology and be prepared for 170 she is the one to take. Do not take her if you need to meet a Gen Ed Rec. Bio majors will love her.
She is a nice teacher. Has passion and loves to teach. There is no homework but sometimes she gives you quizzes at the beginning of the class so you must be in class on time. Tests are not easy so you better keep studying. She really cares about students tries to remember all the students' names. she always wants to help students so ask her.
She is the worst and hardest Biology professor I've ever had. She expects a lot from students. Her exams are so hard. She has many long pre-lab assignments which aren't worth any point but you have to do them. Just to tell you that she's hard. More than half od her students drop by the end of the semester, and the rest won't pass with good grades.
She is amazing. Her teaching style really enables you to understand the material. LOVE her as a bio prof and a person. She is super helpful and very clear in her lectures. Tests are a little challenging, but getting an A is definitely possible! Take her! :D
Professor Allen will make you change your study habits. I must say she made me a better student and I thank her very much for that.
Heavy Class! She is difficult but fair. 3 tests, and the final. You must be hard working to succeed. She does post her ppts which are helpful. Very approachable and nice. Her tests are challenging and require you to use logic and know specific processes to a T. Taking her class is a test of endurance. Don't lose steam and you'll be fine.
Allen is an awesome teacher and you can tell that she genuinely loves to teach. There are 3 tests and 1 final. The final is partially cumulative but counts for the same amount of points as the tests. There's also labs, 2 lab finals, and some quizzes here and there. Put a lot of effort into studying for the exams because they can be very difficult.
A great professor who i think is too good to be at a CC. Tests can be hard, but if you just study, you'll do fine. No real homework besides reading. Grade is based on primarily on tests and labs. Shes cute & has an accent to hold your interest :) Would be lying if I didnt say I hadnt though about it...
She's a hard grader. Wants u to be specific & use lots of terms in the essay. MC questions are application questions so u have to understand ur materials. Really helpful & cares about her students. Don't be afraid to ask questions in class & outside coz she doesn't make u look stupid at all & she explains it clearly. Got a B for working my butt off
Good teacher! She made class fun and interesting. Just do all the assigned readings, take good notes in class, and study!
Great teacher who expects a lot from students. If you happen to be studying for the DAT (or OAT too apparently), this class covers a majority of the Bio section. Tests can be hard since they cover tons of material, however she provides comprehensive study guides.
This is a vey hard class and I repeat HARD class..take this class if this is your major or else find another class to get that easy A if this is not your passion. She expects alot from her students and has no mercy. She is an excellent professor, but if you do not put the time and effort to study there is no way of passing..exams are difficult...
She's a nice person and all but her tests are very hard and on top of that, she's not a easy grader. On the essay part, she will mark you down for not using the terms she wants you to use, even if your answer is right. Dont take her.
Great Great professor ever. I loved her class. She's very helpful and you'll learn tons about bio. Just.I wanna let you know that she's a bit hard grader. But Im sure you'll love this clss.
Great Professor! Her class isnt easy but if you actually put time and effort in an A is possible. In lecture: new quizzes but she gives you a weeks notice, four tests, few hwk assignments and she doesnt drop anything. In lab: few quizzes with weeks notice, labs worth 5 points and two lab exams. Very rare to get extra credit.
She's always there to help you and will provide additional study halls during her office hours before class. She is very organized and gives you tests back within a week. Although I think she is an excellent instructor who knows what she's taking about, you have to make sure you're constantly reviewing the material the material. Not an easy A.
she's a great professor, goes out her way to make sure you understand. she's funny and beyond beautiful! this class is hard overall, don't expect to pass if you're not going to put the time. wouldn't recommend taking to manny classes if your thinking of taking this course . you need to put at lest 12 hours a week to assure a good grade.
Professor Allen is amazing! Her class is strenuous, as one would assume, but you will leave with more than what you put in. Her lectures are enjoyable and interactive . She is very caring, and is willing to provide additional review sessions outside of her office hours. I would definitely recommend taking her class.
I learned so much from this class. Its very interesting, honestly. But she is such a hard grader. The first day of class she'll tell you 14 of the class passes, and I can see why. There isn't any prereq for this class, but there should be. This weeds out people who want to be bio majors. Be ready to work work work!
This class is very detailed-oriented. I struggled in the first weeks and failed the 1st exam. What helped me pass was recording her lectures, labs, & reviews; & then re-wrote everything she said verbatim. It took forever, but that's what helped me pass her exams. She'll definitely advise to take bio 101 first, but she's always there to help you.
This was my first class as a college freshman my first semester and it was by far one of the hardest things ever lol but she made it fun. She was super sweet and actually got to know her students. She's gorgeous inside and out. You just have to work your ass off 5 hours a day if you're really tryna get an A or even a B LOL but that's bio for u
Wonderful! Absolutely loved her and this class. It really was not as hard as people made it out to seem. Thought I was walking into mission possible. People said they put hours and hours and hours in, I just put a few for each test and got an A. The thing is you must have DEDICATION and LOVE for the subject. Loved the lectures and adored her.
For all you folks that need to take bio 170, she is not an easy professor. Only if you have taken a bio class prior to this one, you'll be okay. But if it's your first time taking bio in a while, don't waste your time. HOURS of daily studying are required in order to pass and her exams are NOT easy. I recommend to take bio 101 before!
Amazing professor, she's all sorts of helpful & kind. don't underestimate this class' rigor. It's challenging b/c so she goes over so much material. She's definitely a tough grader so you have to really know your stuff. It's an accomplishment to pass her class, just put in lots of effort and go to her for help. Do the reading & breathe, u got this!
Wouldn't recommend for non-bio/science majors. Avoid if you are only taking for a 'with lab' requirement. For science majors there is no one better.
Professor Allen was probably one of the best teachers I've had. She is so passionate about what she teaches and she does a really good job of explaining the material in lecture. That being said, BIO 170 is a tough class. Make sure to read the textbook and rewrite your notes, for it is a lot of information. If you put in the time, you can do well.
Information for this class is tough in general but Professor Allen tries to help you by avoiding the textbook most of the time since its more confusing then helpful. Her slides are really vague, and expects you know the lesson before coming to lecture. SO make sure you study in every any free time you have!
Honestly one of the worst professors I've had. Her teaching style is very difficult to understand and her tests are impossible. I advise taking another professor or taking this class at another college. Lectures don't help much for her tests.
Honestly one of the best professors I've had. Her class is tough, but not impossible. It is a lecture heavy class so taking notes and coming to class every day is a must. Her tests are extremely straight forward and she is always available for further questions after class. She is very passionate and willing to help her students improve!
A great professor! She is an amazing lecturer and very funny!! Her tests are hard but if you study you should do fine. Review notes and READ THE BOOK. She does her best to minimize the use of the book, so she might hand out a reading guide so as to not waste your time. Review the Lab Manual for the Lab practicals because it's straight out of it
Wonderful teacher. Make sure to participate and ask questions so that you can fully understand the lectures. It helps to read beforehand to get the full picture. She grades on understanding the general concepts so that you can apply it to the specifics.
Professor Allen is a great professor, however, her tests are difficult so don't expect an easy A out of this class. I don't suggest taking it with a full schedule. Otherwise she makes the topic interesting and she's very kind
Hands down, Professor Allen is my FAVORITE professor in Fullerton for any of the science classes i've taken (and I've taken nearly all of them) ; Bio 170 is a DIFFICULT class to pass, but Professor Allen's lectures are worth a million. Her tests aren't easy, but as any class, study and you pass. Rewrite your notes and talk to her! She's amazing!
Professor Allen is hands down my most favorite professor. Her tests are difficult, but she is very accessible for her students. She's super funny and teaches in a way that makes you want to learn the material. BUT beware this class is hard and has A LOT of material with any professor and it requires at least 10-15 hrs of studying outside class.
Can't stress enough how much I enjoyed taking Professor Allen's class. She genuinely cares about her students and makes you enjoy learning about biology. Although the rigor of BIO170 is known to discourage a lot of hopeful bio majors, Professor Allen provides a great learning environment. She is definitely my favorite professor at Fullerton!
Best bio teacher I've ever had. The content isnt hard it's just so much of it crammed into each and every test. Very difficult and very fun to be in. Lots of work but if you dont do it you wont pass
She is very nice and caring .But can be a very tough grader and she cramps everything up .Need to read before lecture. Labs are pretty easy .Need alot of time for this class it can be very challenging and she expects us to do alot even if you haven't taken Bio100 it can be overwhelming.
Don't take her shes too hard no matter how hard you try you won't pass. Her slides are not clear either.
Great professor, involved and wants you to pass. Honest and helpful. Take notes and attend every class. Her teaching is very easy to follow if you pay attention and put in the work. You will not pass with sub par work. Its a lot of information but achievable. Follow her advice she knows how to get her students to pass. Rewrite your notes, no phones
Professor Allen is such a gem. She wants you to succeed in her class. Graded by 4 tests and a lot of labs. Do well in all of them. I checked out during the lab midterms and took a toll on my grade. Look at the powerpoints she uses and listen to everything she says. It is so crucial to the lecture tests. She'll try to help you out she is not scary.
prof. Allen really cares about her students but its a very difficult class. a lot of information. you have to read the textbook before you come to class to understand the lecture. tests are difficult. you really have to put in a lot of time in this class to pass.
Professor Allen is the literal BEST biology professor I've ever had. She makes concepts super interesting, and she cares so much about your success. Print out her slides or take notes on them. Make sure to write everything she says about each bullet point. This class is memorization heavy, so know all her bullets. The textbook is used sparingly.
Absolutely lovely!! She is invested in her students and wants you to pass. Tests are difficult so make sure to read the textbook before class, print out slides & take notes during lecture. This class is not easy but she provides you with studying techniques that DO help. She truly makes the class enjoyable and tries her best to help you succeed.
1. tough grader 2. acts like she cares but ends up just wanting to be a difficult prof and class 3. spend hours outside of class instead of during zoom appointed lecture times 4. does not understand students have been affected in their personal live due to the pandemic & fires & in general 5. in breakout room (lab groups) people just talk abt her
uses the entire lecture time to answer a few questions(some not about lecture material) rather than having the actual lecture. lab group times is talking about her&how she runs the class. No homework assignments(helps narrow down important topics for exams) only notes u take from bookcture; rewrite notes .all memory for lots of info on exams
This is a very rigorous class. 2 days dedicated for lecture, 1 day for lab, and yet the amount of studying/prep you have to do for this class makes it feel entirely like a 5 day class. That being said, yes you have to work hard for this class, but Professor Allen is an amazing teacher. She is helpful, dedicated, put in the work and she helps you.
This was my first time taken a Bio class in a long time since high school. I didn't even take bio 101 just jump straight to 170! This class is very information heavy and the hardest class I have ever taken. Prof. Allen is an amazing teacher! she will do her best to help you understand the material from the lecture. Minimum 5-8 hrs a week to study.
Incredibly tough grader. She's obviously passionate about the topic, but she expects nothing but the best, and even then that's not good enough. She expects you to just know a lot of things when many people don't. She wants you to rewrite your notes into essays on each topic and memorize them. It's super tough.
Prof. Allen is super understanding. Very mom-like and cares how you are doing inside and outside of class. Make sure to study hard, and attend study sessions. Her tests are designed to test your knowledge to the max. She gives plenty of extra credit, so there's time to make up points lost. Good feedback. Stick through it and ask her for help. 10/10
We need more professors like her. She makes the subject fun and she is a professor who is very organized and clear with the material. The exams are hard, but if you study hard and stay proactive you will do well in this class. Remember, just because she is good and caring doesn't mean its easy. WORK FOR IT!
Take notes and listen to what she says and you'll be fine. Class has a lot of material so make sure to review and study. Super honest about what she's looking for and very open to answering questions. Gives extra credit. Prepares you for other Biology courses. I would 100% take her again if she taught other classes.
Definitely recommend taking this class if you're interested in biology! Professor Allen makes the class interesting and fun! The class consists of taking lecture notes at home for homework credit, and she goes over the important topics from the lecture recordings during class. It's extremely important to take heavily detailed notes.
If you take this class, do not be late; this was my weakness and she helped me fix it. Go to her office hours, for it is very helpful, especially with your essays. This class is hard, but you can get an A if you study hard, and take detailed notes from her videos and in-person lectures. take advantage of a tutoring session, for her tutor is great!
Professor Allen is so caring, go to her office hours if you don't get a concept she will help you. This class is pretty tough you need to work hard for an A but I think its possible. Overall shes great with teaching, just study the study guides she gives. Exam 1 is the hardest so definitely study for that one
Grateful for Professor Allen's amazing semester! Their teaching style made Biology less intimidating. Notes before lectures help, and tutoring sessions were a game-changer. No textbook necessary for exams, but it's useful for extra info. Lucky to have a dedicated professor!
Very passionate about biology but a little overrated as a teacher. Professor expects you to watch recorded lectures at home instead of teaching the subject in class. Lots of material to learn and doesn't cover all the topics that are tested on the exams.
She is the best professor I've taken at FC. Lecture video homework is due before every class,a few quizzes, manageable tests and she provides a study guide that's similar to the test. Getting an A isn't hard if you are somewhat smart, the class comes with an embedded tutor that meets twice every week which can earn you extra credit points.
The class itself can get difficult, but Prof Allen makes the content digestible. She is very kind, patient, and welcoming of any question. Getting an A is doable. She is a bit of a tough grader because she is particular about how concepts are worded, but it is a big help with the learning process so it is nothing unnecessary.
She utilized a "watch lectures at home and practice concepts in class" sort of structure but your only hw are your lecture notes. Her lectures are amazing and the extra practice in class was really helpful. The class was heavy in information but if you can prioritize it, its not difficult at all. Loved her and would recommend!!
I absolutely love professor Allen! she is truly one the most kindest patient professors I have ever encountered at Fullerton college. This course by nature is hard and demands of a lot of attention and studying, so it is YOUR responsibility to put in the work. Office hours are the trick. Attend them and ask good questions and you will pass.
Professor Allen is a caring instructor who wants students to succeed. The class is challenging, but engaging with the course material and using study tools like Unstuck study can help. Stay on top of the workload and you'll learn a lot.
Professor Allen is truly one of the greatest and caring teachers that Fullerton College has to offer. Virtually no homework outside of video lectures (~1 hour long) which are well crafted. Do not take this class if you're not willing to put in the effort; this class is NOT hard but it IS time consuming. Endless out of class resources.
She had recorded lectures to take notes before class which was really good to understand all the coplex topics of this class. She cares about students and give possitive and good feedback in how you can do better. Go to her office hours and complete her guides to do good in exams and learn. Going to the tutoring hours also helped me a lot!
Professor Allen is one of my favorite professors because of her unique way of teaching. She bases her class on a discussion of the videos she posts on Canvas (which are the lecture itself) and then goes over the most important possible essay questions in class. Expect to have to invest A LOT of time in studying, but honestly the class is worth it.
Write good notes, rewrite your notes near an exam date, and go to Biol tutoring. Her lectures are also great because they reinforce the flipped format of learning. Do not skip any in-person lectures and come in with any questions regarding the material. Again, the best way to get an A in her class is to rewrite your notes and understand them.
She's very fun and engaging and obviously cares a lot about her students. The class is rather difficult, but it is a 5 unit class after all.
VERY PRECISE GRADER. Study guides are helpful but very broad so start as soon as you can. No notes on exams. Notes on pre-recorded 1.5 hr long lectures for homework. My advice, finish hw asap and solidify any processes before class as she assigns group work and you don't want to be the one that doesn't contribute. Book isn't required.
