Stop forcing us to talk....and put away the bright clothes..please!!!
Demanding in a constructive fashion. The best!
Great teacher. Keep up the good work.
serious students appreciate your efforts
Challenges us to think. Best prof at Trent!
He should teach everything in the department.
Good teacher. Very sexy. I would like to see his father!
Really cares and works hard. Thanx.
Knowledgable. Enthusiastic. Don't let him fool you. He like his students.
I just realized Dr. Fenwick has taught me a great amount. Thanks!
Mac is a true genius, yet so down to earth you want to take him out for a beer!
GreatJob!

Wonderful teacher. Very knowledgable!
His enthusiasm is infectious. Now I love English Lit!
Demanding and inspiring. I learned a lot in his course! Thanks!

SUPERB TEACHER. He is a motivator.
He wants us to love the literatature. Keep it up!
That last student is a jerk. Doc Mac rules!
Great prof & great guy.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic
demanding and inspiring. Great motivator.
Tough, fair, funny, inspirational.
Easy to talk to. Very helpful.
..if you raise your hand, fenwick, can i throw chalk at you?? please
I guess that last student does not enjoy being made to work and think! Fenwick is the best professor I have had in my three years at University. That is a period!

Inspirational teacher and very knowledgable. Take a course from Fenwick!
Mac is groovy!! he really inspires. you leave the class feeling smart. we actually learn!
Best Prof at Trent. Should be full time. I would love to take an upper level course from Fenwick because I know i would learn something.
very tough. pretty fair. bit of an ass sometimes. but i learned lots from him. NEVER RAISE YOUR HAND IN CLASS.
At first his seminar appears to be an environment where a person could thrive. And yet as time goes on you will realize that Mac is one who gives little help and very little guidence. STAY OFF HIS BAD SIDE OR YOUR DOOMED.
Demanding but fair -- he sure does make us talk a lot though
Mac makes you think...and then do, not just do and then think
The questions he asks always help get us thinking and then talking. He sometimes goes a bit off topic but that helps the mood of the class. His lectures are amazing! Always full of intersting information and good interpretations of the writing.
I had fun
Summer session - bright, enthusiastic, keen, bit goofy. Never saw him scowl. Good man.
What the last person said -- but with higher numbers! And he was more than a bit goofy!!
Hard and demanding marker but at least you learn something from him. Can't believe he's only part-time -- Trent has a lto of profs who could learn something from Fenwick!!
he did a good job keeping us interested in some boring stuff

Mac rocks!!! I really enjoy his seminars. He is very intelligent and he is very persice... though I am not the dumb blonde he thinks I am. HAHAHHA! Just joking.
He's a nut, but that is what's so great about him. He'll tell you the truth, and doesn't pander to you if what you're saying is full of****. He really makes you think and defend your opinions!
Mac, has been awesome, he makes all the boring books interesting because everything always seems to go back to sex!
I love how he always comes into class with a different way to get you to look at things -- really makes you think.
Mac rocks my socks. Funny, intelligent, interesting, and inspiring; he's a great prof.
worst teacher I have at Trent

I found mac really intimidating at the beginning of the year, but after the midterm i went and talked to him about improving my mark. He took note that i was really trying and helped me out big time.By the end of the year he had gone from loathed to loved. And I improved my mark Drastically. Love this guy to no end.
Best teacher I have ever had and certainly the best prof. at Trent. I cannot understand why Trent has noit signed this man to a long term contract. Fenwick taught me to enjoy learning.
He is the reason i dropped shakespeare.
Mac is awesome. The kind of professor you would take any course just because he's teaching it.
A prof who knows his stuff AND cares enough about his students to make certain they learn something. Wish all profs were like this. Fenwick should be full time!
Debated dropping MANY times but didn't want to waste the money.Lestures are way too long which makes it hard to motivate yourself to go to class. Class was majority poetry - very little of anything else - if you're not good with poetry try to get Boyd.
Mac is great! He is the only english teacher that has really inspired me. He makes you look at the literature in a whole different way, and is always open to unique and different perspectives and interpretations. I highly recommend Mac as a teacher, and if I wasn't a psychology major I would have taken more of his classes!
Best prof I have and the only real teacher at Trent. He got me to think, he got me to learn, and now I enjoy reading. Wow. What a gift. Thanks!
Awesome teacher. Really funny, always look forward to going to his class. Taught me to look at more than the surface to readings to do closer readings as well. Would love to have him again!
He's ok.

This man is uber.
not bad
very hard. make sure to participate if you have him as your seminar leader
hard marker, great teacher.. you learn a lot..enough said
Good Prof, cares about serious students. Lectures a little long. Not much of a chance to participate in lectures, he is pretty committed to his arguement. Marks fair, makes you think. Personable.
fair marker, great lecturer and great seminar leader. Participate or whatch your grade drop.
Mac has a sense of humour and sometimes people think he's a jerk because of it. He doesn't sugar coat criticism but is actually really helpful and a wonderful prof.
The Mac is my hero. Brilliantly explains, with clarity, things that I wouldn't have gotten on my own. Does a good job of not dwelling on the context of the works, but rather explicating the content. He's incredibly pompous and arrogant, but lovably so, and he's smart enough to back it up. His Beowulf interpretation is legendary. A-WHOO! A-WHOO!
His lectures are pretty good. He understands that not everyone is going to love reading Beowulf or pick up Middle English easily. He loves his subject, but is aware that not every student feels the same way. I think he gets that many of us are taking the course b/c it is required. He's kinda cute too, which doesn't hurt! ;)
Great Prof. Demanding but clear, enthusiastic and encouraging. If you can take a course from Fenwick - any course!
Mac Rocks, I dont care what anyone says. Best Prof I have had at Trent! Cant say much more than that to get my point across!
goodgoodgood
I really enjoyed class discussion and wanted to here more of this Prof. point of view but he is very careful not to force his opinion on the students. He seems to rather prefer you develope your own opinion based on the facts. Very, very helpfull with any question I had. I'd love to take another class with him. I really felt I learned something.
Mac is the best teacher I have ever had! He taught the Shakespeare course last year- best course at University so far as well. He is also extremely attractive! Take ANYTHING that he teaches. Its worth it for the eye candy alone.
keep on keepin on Mac you rock my socks and def keep me comin back!!!
I think he's great. He's funny, helpful and a good guy.
Fenwick is my favourite professor I've had my entire university year. His classes are great and he's always so enthusiastic which makes everything we learn that much better. Definitely hot as well. Fantastic prof with a great sense of humour.
I am secretly in love with this man. Seeing him on a weekly basis rocks my world. So smart and so funny. I will take anything he teaches!!!
Mac Fenwick is my Renaissance man. Too bad he's married :(
Amazing professor! Many of us are secretly in love with him.
Can be helpful, can be quite useless, depends when you catch him. Oh yeah, he's also a very tough marker...
Best prof I've ever had. Always helpful and willing. Very enthusiastic when it came to lecturing. He's easy to talk to and always gave great advice when it came to academics. I'll definitely be using his enthusiastic methods when I start teaching.
Best Prof. at Trent U. He is tough because he wants us to learn and very surprisingy for a Prof., he actually respects and likes his students. This guy should be a FULL TIME Professor.
A prof who cares enough to really get me interested in literature. Thanks prof.
mac was interesting and fun, but he liked the sound of his own voice more than that of his students. said at the beginning of the year that he would hardly be talking in seminar, and that wasn't the case. sometimes made participation feel unwelcome.
Mac was an enthusiastic prof. but was not hesitant to remind the class how much smarter he was then us. Most likely true. He could sometimes answer questions in a way that would just leave you more confused. He was fun though and willing to discuss topics with you if you showed interests. Also a good story teller.
Best Prof. I have had at Trent. Its too bad the University will not hire this guy as a full time professor as he is much better than any of the other profs in the english department.
Mac was fun and engaging in class. He was very focussed on getting students' opinions on the text, rather than his own, although he did usually tell us what he thought. He had in-class written assignments every week, and the grading for those varied. He didn't give any constructive feedback on assignments or tests though, even when asked in class.
Dr. Fenwick's lectures are interesting and always make me laugh. He is a well spoken and thoughtful person.
Loved Fenwick! His lectures were always super funny but also super interesting. He even found a way to make Shakespeare interesting. He was also super kind and accessible outside of class. Am currently searching to see if he offers any other classes at Trent!
Mac is the funny, and very approachable. Definitely enjoyed seminars with him. Also, he looks and dresses like Leonard from Big Bang Theory.
Fenwick is an amazing prof who is very underrated by the university!! He's super passionate about English and is always engaging. I've never enjoyed English and only took this course to fill a requirement but I would happily take more English courses if taught by Fenwick. Had me leaving the 2 hour lecture on Shakespeare wishing it had been 4!!
The best professor that Trent has to offer. No other wants the involvment and ideas of students more than him. His funny hugh energy way of teaching keeps everybody involved, excited, and most importantly remembering the information. Nobody will truly appreciate your input on a reading more than him and want to take your idea to another level.
There's no exam, so lectures really serve no use except if you want more insight for either seminars or essays. However, this was the only course that I attended every lecture, and found myself looking forward to them as well. I'm not the biggest fan of English, I only took this because I needed a 5th course. Best decision I made in Uni so far
For a first year class there was a lot of reading (we're talking at least a novel a week). Additionally, you have to listen to his unedited 2 hour voice lectures online in loo of in class time, which would be fine except it often has nothing to do with the weekly assignments given, and there is minimal (if any) feedback given on those assignments.
As an online course prof, Mac is not very accommodating. There are often long wait times for him to answer emails. His lecture videos are very long and the content in the lectures does not even relate to the weekly assignments or tests. His tone often comes across as condescending to the students. Overall, I don't recommend Love & Hate.
Top three professor at Trent. Absolutely hilarious, intelligent, and inspirational. We read a new book every week, but every week I found myself both reading said book and contributing in our small, seminar style class. I can't say enough about his positive attitude and relationship with his students. Take him if you get the chance!!
Mac provides a great online course format, although there are some things I wish could be different. Weekly reading can seem a bit much, but keep in mind it's an online course with no in class component. Mac's videos are helpful in explaining his perspectives, and additional background information on readings, so don't skip them!
Extremely verbose lectures. Course is called Love and Hate and yet hate isn't explored at all. Course isn't just reading, it's movies and music as well.
Lectures were verbose and almost irrelevant to the weekly assignments. Marking scheme very inconsistent and unclear. Not accommodating at all -- wouldn't give extensions even if a doctors note was provided. Condescending tone, did not value professor-student relationships and 'feedback' was not helpful for assignments.
He is a nice guy who I think means well, but is not accomodating whatsoever. Tough marker without clear feedback, very tough class to get through for a whole year.
wears a Star Wars shirt with brown corduroy pants and asks to not be called sir on first day of class. Lol. He also compares people working at McDonalds AKA the low income class and to students in demeaningful ways. Little did he know was my mom, paying for my education ,works at McDonalds to support us..
He is very condescending towards students, asking for feedback is impossible as he just provides long-winded explanations that tell you that if you don't agree with his opinions, then you are wrong. He is rude and makes students feel small. I would not recommend taking a course with him.
Fenwick is enthusiastic about what he teaches, and his emails are pretty funny, but he has an undeniable superiority complex. His grading is very unpredictable and won't give out good grades to ideas that aren't his own.
As someone who enjoys English courses, I was very disappointed with his class and teaching style. This course is incredibly difficult and is very far-fetching, to say the least. I found him very pretentious and demeaning. His assignments criteria are often very contradicting and are very confusing, the same can be said for his marking.
Probably the most pretentious and condescending professor I have ever had in my career as a student. He creates his concepts in a vacuum and expects his students to regurgitate his own ideology like its gospel. Employs extremely inconsistent grading criteria and doesn't seem to understand his own critiques when you bring them up with him in email.
ZOOM REVIEW Lots of reading and the weekly lectures videos were long, dry, and difficult to follow. Fenwick tried his best to make the weekly lectures on zoom informative and entertaining, which he partly succeeds at. He was the embodiment of the "How do you do, fellow kids?" meme.
Lots of lectures about his own interpretation of the material, (Which usually have little to do with the work you are required to do). lots of reading (like a book a week) followed by weekly essays. Easily the worse course I took.
You must read a book weekly and watch long videos that slightly (if ever) help with the 500-600 word report you are writing every week. The marking scheme is skewed, with feedback given that does not guide you for the next reports. It is as if random marks are picked out of a hat. Mac provided no clear grading criteria throughout the entire course.
He is a decent grader. You have to do the weekly readings, listen to his lectures and take down notes if you want to get an A. It's not an easy course because there is a book to read every week and it's very time consuming. I took this class as an elective and it's not the smartest choice. However, he keeps the lectures entertaining and interesting
Mac is flexible and understanding. I was fortunate to have him as seminar leader as well as lecturer. His in-class discussions and lectures were both engaging and broadened my understanding of the texts we tackled. He does his best to make his classes fun, I would highly recommend for anyone with ADHD who loves English.
Prof. Fenwick is an enthusiastic and knowledgable instructor, but he is lacking in professionalism, and tries to impress students with his cursing and 'cool attitude'. Fenwick seems to think of himself as an entertainer, and does not know how to engage students to foster confidence, especially in a first year class. He needs sensitivity training.
Prof. Fenwick is the best professor I've had so far. He engages students in lectures and upholds a positive, caring attitude. He was my professor for Children's Literature, and his assignments were easy to complete and entertaining. Prof. Fenwick is understanding and very flexible. I recommend taking one of his classes if you love English!
Mac is a really great teacher. He is passionate about literature, open to students ideas, creates a fun environment to learn and engage in and over all he is really understanding and a fair dude.
Mac is really engaging in his lectures and ensures that all students have the opportunity to discuss their thoughts on the reading for that week. He assigned a novel per week but it was possible to get by reading summaries online if need be. Assignments are not difficult. There are various activities done in class that make the course a lot of fun.
Mac is a great professor in the sense that he is very passionate about English and teaching. But he is really inconsistent with his marking and is unclear about what he wants. He also always has a clear opinion on a book and will want you to pander to him, if you disagree he will mark you lower. Keep that in mind with essays and participation.
Mac is a horrible professor. He takes way too much personally and thinks he's the coolest guy around. Grading is terrible each week and he does'nt even make anything accessible to the student. Tries to say students plagiarize work when he does not leave information and you must go to the web for info. Cool guy here needs to re learn how to teach.
As others have stated, if your opinion does not align with his be prepared to get a bad grade. There is very little feedback, or at least very little usable feedback to improve. No matter the circumstances he will not allow for extensions or makeups even though the notes are 50% of your grade. Seems more interested in his opinion than in teaching.
The grading for the course is super inconsistent, and basically just depends on how well you regurgitate what he said in lecture. You also get a different marker every week and they give no feedback. You read one book every week and write a paper on it, and before the final exam he deletes all of the lecture content so you can't go back and review
Inconsistent grading (a new grader a lot of the times), weekly assignments and readings essentially weekly essays, and presented to be a first year course, but better suited as a second or third year course. Overall, opinion-centred and not catered to the true success of students themselves, rather the success of entertaining unclear standards.
If you're too serious or think you know all the answers, you will not do well in Fenwick's class. He is really funny, perhaps an acquired taste of humour as it's for sure different than most profs. It was my favourite class to attend. How to do well? Show up to class, be friendly, make valuable contributions and don't assume you know anything!
Mac is a super fun prof! If you have the chance to take his Child's Literature class, I would def say to do it. It's fun, thought-provoking, and really makes you think harder about books from your childhood, as well as assess the lessons and morals from said books in different ways and if they matter. I've never seen him wear a Star Wars shirt. lol
AMAZING prof!! Not many profs can hold attention up until 9 pm, but not a single class was boring. He brings class discussions and an aspect of fun to each lecture, which really allows you to do well if you participate. 100% recommend him and this course, it really provides an opportunity to view child's literature in a deeper understanding
Shames students and their hobbies in lectures. Unfair policies created by him that are meant to lower the students grades. Very egotistical and unprofessional.
Mac is an incredibly biased and self-centred professor. He goes on about how something like a fairy tale has multiple interpretations, then proceeds to tell you his interpretation (framed as being the "correct" one) and will mark you based on how well you can parrot that interpretation back to him. Also he expects you to read a novel every week.
As others mentioned, he has a huge ego and doesn't provide clear instructions or prompts for work. You will find yourself asking, "What is actually he asking here?" He thinks he's funny and loves to hear himself talk (and does a lot of it). Not great at actually teaching.
Def a content heavy course. As a second year student, this is the most readings and work I've had to do. It's def manageable but a lot more work then it needs to be. My biggest problem with this course is the TA's. They give useless to no feedback. After applying their feedback my mark lowered from a 80% to 60%? and they never answer their emails
Prof. Fenwick was great over the full year that I was in his class. I mean, it was a Shakespeare class, so be ready to read Shakespeare! Overall though, Mac just wants to see you genuinely be successful and he wants to know you have an understanding of what was discussed. Oh and for the first years, a book a week is standard :)
Too many papers. Would only recommend this course to an English major. Do not take this course if you think it'll be a breeze or you're NOT an avid reader or if you work a full-time job. Lecture videos are at least 6 years old (from 2018). In an email he stated that to be successful you need to dedicate at least "10 hours" a week for this course...
Great when for communication purposes, but his TAs are god awful. My TA would comment, "Great," and give me a D. I would not suggest this course to anyone who isn't interested in spending 12+ hours reading, writing, and watching stuff, all to get a not-great grade. If you are having issues, go to his office hours (seriously). It helped me a lot!
I've taken many classes with Mac; he is one of my favourite professors by far. Great lecturer, clear passion for English, outgoing personality, great class discussion. In first year, the course I took with him motivated me to work hard & time manage, preparing me for future courses (many readings=uni standard). I'm thankful to've been taught by Mac
Mac was a not so slay prof. He was easy to reach outside of class but would be not helpful at all with his responses. He thought he was the coolest person on the earth and talked about his sex life in the lectures. The TA I had was awful, she would give a C then say "Great" for feedback, never told me what made me lose marks. I would NEVER take Mac
Unapproachable, made me uncomfortable over email with passive-aggressive/insulting comments. Tough marker, and not flexible with late work, even if late by a single hour.
literally worst prof i've ever had, extremely rude and insulting to students. has very disrespectful and biased opinions, if he doesn't like you as a student good luck. extremely egotistical and loves to degrade students especially in front of others, doesn't care about student success. would never recommend him unless you have to take his course.
Professor Mac can be challenging, but engaging with the system works well. The workload is heavy, so stay on top of it. For study prep, ChatGPT and Unstuckstudy were super helpful for me.
I thought that this professor was an extremely difficult markers. I got 75-80% in other English classes, but a 53% in this one. Lots of readings. I did not like how much he talked about p**ises. He was always mentioning p**is envy. I haven't heard anything good about him from other peers. I just would avoid taking his classes in general.
In seminars, Fenwick always derailed conversations, bringing up genitalia, sex, or being gay, even when irrelevant, like in Vandermeer's Annihilation. He degraded others' opinions and his essay grading was biased especially if your essay would disagree with his beliefs. It was an uncomfortable experience, glad it's over.
As a seminar instructor Mac was funny and insightful, and made the conversation interesting. Sometimes the vulgar humour was uncomfortable but reference to sex was never not related to text discussion. I did not find him to be a hard marker but rather nit-picky- which once you apply his criticisms make it easy to succeed in his class.
I took Mac's ENGL1005H Love and Hate course... worst class of my life. The assignment instructions were often unclear, and Mac made some outrageous claims in lectures without complete truths behind them (eg. claiming Romeo and Juliet is not a tragedy yet not distinguishing the multiple genres of tragedy). The course was also very assignment-heavy.
One of the most difficult courses I have ever taken, in terms of workload. Little feedback was provided, and the lectures often became weirdly sexual. Would not recommend taking.
he will make you feel very uncomfortable. suggestive imagery when not necessary, zero feedback, I learned nothing. Waste of my time.
Mac Fenwick is one of the toughest graders I have ever had. Do NOT take this course if you're a woman. It is extremely unclear what his stance is on respecting those of the opposite sex, he refuses to grade anything that isn't exactly on time, or does not correlate with the extremely vague instructions given on the syllabus he is very disrespectful
Honestly this professor is the worst one I've had in my 3 years at this school. He often brings up uncomfortable/sexual topics that you are required to address in your assignments. He gives little to no feedback on your assignments and he gave an immense amount of work each week claiming we MUST spend at least 10hours a week minimum to pass.
Mac is an incredibly genuine and insightful professor who clearly has a deep passion for English literature and a strong commitment to his students' success. He challenges students to broaden their perspectives and think critically. While the course is reading-intensive with weekly assignments, the content is consistently engaging.
