Great professor. Understands what math and CS majors think like and can relate to students since he's young. HWs are relevant and problems from them show up on the quizzes. Exams actually test knowledge of material. Only problem I had with him was that the homeworks and quizzes from late October and on we didn't get back until the day of the final.
Before this class, my rule was if I can't pronounce the prof. name, he can't speak english. Szczesny is definetly an exception. Native english speaker, very clear and presents the material well. He prepares us well for his exams, they're almost identical to his practice ones. Material isn't too tough, easy to get an A.
Excellent lecturer, presented the material in a very clear and understandable manner. Tests were fair and homework was not overwhelming but helpful. Do the practice exams! He's also good looking.
Very clear with his explanations and you know what is expected from you. The practice exams are helpful and the final was almost exactly the same as the practice final. good guy.
very dry sense of humor (arid is probably a better word). clear explanations, though he spends a bit of time deriving properties that you only need to remember the end result. Tests and quizzes resemble very much the homework. If you keep up, it's a simple class to do well in.
He teaches right out of the book, and explains almost nothing. Why even go to class? The exams are incredibly difficult and virtually impossible to finish, almost no one leaves before they end. Exam 1 average was an F and the exam 2 average was an F. Exams hardly test your knowledge of calculus. this is the worst class i have ever, ever taken.
He's so hot, the only problem is he wears one of the same 3 shirts to every single lecture. Tries to crack jokes that definitely aren't funny, but it's kind of fun to watch him try. He makes things sound complicated in lecture but tests are easy.
His lectures are directly from the book so I prefer to use class time to catch up on my reading and crosswords-- he's boring. BUT if you do nothing else for the class DO THE PRACTICE TESTS. They are pretty much verbatim! It is impossible to get less than a B if you just memorize them!!
Do all the homework and practice exams, they both really help. He's sort of soft spoken, so it's hard to listen from the back of the room. The midterms are tricky, and no one gets full points.. but he curves them nicely. Good guy
The best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear and extremely helpful during office hours. I would take all future math classes with him if given the chance. Truly a great teacher.
Hes an EXTREMELY helpful teacher, if you dont get calculus easily - hes ur man. he will batter the math into ur head, goes through all sorts of examples in class; that being said, he is extremely boring for most of class, except when he tries to be funny. Then its just funny to watch him try
I think I finally figured this guy out. He makes the class as hard as possible (no calculators on tests, collects and grades homework assignments that take hours to finish, weekly quizzes). You will feel so lost and confused until the final, when suddenly, you realize that his intense class turned you into a master of calculus.
Sit near the front of the class: he can be soft-spoken, but very funny. The examples in lecture may be tedious, but they're really helpful for homework, quizzes, and exams. He's very good if you've never taken calc before or don't remember much. Do the practice exams and go to office hours - they're really good resources.
Love him. Great professor. Homeworks, quizzes, and practice exams are relevant when it comes to exam time. He's pretty much a hoot, too. Easy on the eyes also. Love his three sweaters. And highlights. All right all right he's overall a really good Calc professor. I definitely felt like I lucked out. Oh, learn your trig functions.
Szczesny is a nice guy, but the class was not interesting whatsoever. Lectures were monotonous and boring, and the professor lacked enthusiasm and did not do much to inspire interest in the material.
Very easy class, especially if you've taken Calculus in high school. The lectures can get a bit boring because he uses examples straight out of the book, however, he does stress certain examples which will come up on the exams. Homework and quizzes are graded quite leniently.
It's an okay class, boring but not hard. Just do the hw and the tests will be pretty straight forward
Nice (looking) professor. He covers a lot of material each lecture, which can be detrimental since he goes through it SO QUICKLY. Lenient for homework grading. Weekly quizzes are the death of me though, my average is a 5/10. Midterms are pretty easy. Overall, just an okay class. Don't take it if you're trying to take the easy way out though.
Great Professor. Very friendly.
Lectures are pretty boring and his test are REALLY long even if you know all the calculus, you just dont have enough time to finish the test and make sure you got everything without making little mistakes. Even if you try really hard and you know all the calc, its not an easy A.
You definetly have to work really hard but the class notes are really helpful. The homework is also very time consuming but if you put the time in it only helps you for the exams. The exams aren't that bad as well- you just have to make sure you study a lot. The homework's were definetly the most time consuming and the quizzes in class were hard.
Awesome Professor. He explains everything perfectly, and still has time to make hilarious jokes. Obviously, calculus isn't the easiest class, but he does his best to get everyone into it.
Great professor, makes calculus bearable and understandable. HW is helpful for understanding the material. There are quizzes every week in the discussion session, but easy and straightforward questions. Totally recommend him for calculus class. I wish I could have him as my prof. for my other feature calc courses.
He explains everything clearly. He's very patient and friendly. definitely do to his office hours, and that will help a lot. I will definitely take his course again.
Brilliant guy, great teacher, easy A
Awesome professor! Really interesting guy that's always joking around. His tests are fair and if you do the work, an A is definitely attainable.
Szczesny is that man. He is a fun, young, guy, but actually freakin brilliant. Check out his CV online. He explains concepts well and is good at finding alternative methods for explaining things that are not understood the first time.
The lectures were very clear, and he is very nice, always willing to help.
Szczesny is awesome. Very funny guy, but is monotone (so if you don't really listen he sounds boring). Explains concepts clearly and is approachable in and out of class. Always wears the same style tight jeans and a sweater and rocks a black leather jacket. The BEST calc 1 lecturer, hounds down. Try to get in his section!
Matt is a very good teacher. He is kind and considerate. As long as you do your work, attend class, and ask for help when you need it, you should be fine. There's usually a good amount of expected reasoning and T/F on exams...so be prepared for that! He likes to make sure you can defend your solutions.
Szczesney is the man! While he is on topic most of the time, his occasional bouts of comedy made going to class worthwhile. His lectures are very clear, and he's always enthusiastic to answer any question that's asked,no matter how obvious it is. Definitely take him if you can; it's an incredibly hard class, but Szczes makes it enjoyable at least.
Professor was very good for Calc 2. He is clear and able to explain a difficult subject to college students in their own language. Loves to joke around in class. Highly recommend as a professor
Not your high school calculus, but BU Calc in general isn't going to be. Szczesny is fun to listen to, though. "Remember, if on the test you find yourself lost, stop being lost and start being awesome."
One of the best mathematics professors I have ever had, really engaging lectures, sprinkled with jokes. If you go to lecture, you're saving a bunch of time because he can fly through material and make it way more clear than you can do on your own in the same amount of time.
The only reason I did well in the class was because of him. As long as you attend his lectures and listen to what he says, you'll do really well. Always enthusiastic to answer questions. Great (subtle) sense of humour. Assigns exactly the required homework to do well in class. Easy Grader
Professor Szczesny is a great teacher. With a good sense of humor and solid teaching skills, he can make the class feel like it goes by in minutes. He cares about his students -- always ready to answer questions. I would definitely take his class again.
Taking his summer class right now. Freaking brilliant and also funny. Have had to drop this class twice before but taking it with him is so painless and he makes things interesting and so simple. I didn't have to read the textbook most of the time. Very approachable in class. Probably the most clear professor I've ever had.
Matt is one of the best professors I have had. I had him for Calculus and Linear Algebra, and he is both an excellent lecturer, and quite a funny one. I really enjoyed learning from him
Professor Szczesny is one of the best professors I have ever had! His lectures are always crystal clear which makes problems sets pretty easy. The only real down side is that the textbook isn't that good, and there are weekly quizzes in discussion, but the lectures more than make up for this.
Professor Szczesny is a really funny guy who also very proficient in Math. I'm taking his class this summer. He will give you a lot of quizzes that may help you perform well in the midterm. He is really a nice guy that he will solve every problem you ask him. But don't send email to him cuz he won't reply you.
Best math professor I've had so far! He is extremely clear, concise, and engaging even though the material is computationally, as opposed to conceptually, heavy. Plus, he has a subtle sense of humor that is very endearing. Very helpful in office hours, clear assignments, fair grading, and reasonable difficulty. Wish he taught more undergrad courses
Took linear algebra over the summer with him and learned a ton, but be prepared to really work. This class covers a huge amount of material in a short amount of time. Gives great lectures and can explain difficult concepts clearly. Textbook was also useful, and make sure to go over the practice exams. Great professor, funny guy, would take again.
He's a really funny dude and one of the best calc 2 professors. I would highly recommend his class, but make sure to go to lectures and do the homework.
Prof Szczesny is absolutely wonderful, I'd strongly recommend his classes (I had him for Calc II). His lectures explained concepts very clearly and with lots of examples, and he was very accessible/welcoming when I went to him with questions in office hours. He's also pretty funny, so look forward to that!
Not a bad professor, he's quite funny. Sometimes he'll make mistakes on the board which was a bit confusing. As long as you stay on top of homework (once a week), you should do fine. He is a pretty welcoming guy and always willing to answer questions.
Really nice professor. Explains concepts well and provides practice exams. Took MA242 during summer, and really love his lectures.
Awesome prof. Wonderful text for analysis as well.
Get ready to spend long hours on homework. He assigns 40+ questions for every assignment, which is a huge waste of time. The professor is also more focused on catching cheaters rather than ensuring the general success of his students. I only gave him 2/5 and not 1/5 because at least he responds to emails and provides us with a forum to communicate
He explains concepts relatively well but with very low enthusiasm, it's hard to stay engaged. Be prepared for the hw to take you a few hours to complete if you want a good grade. Generously scaled our tests because lots of people did poorly on a couple of the exams. If you like classes that are boring and straightforward, he's your guy.
Prof explains everything very clearly. Sometimes concepts get confused, but reading notes again usually helps. He is available both in office hour and campuswire. Sometimes he also gives some proves that are not in the textbook, which helps student understand.
Linear alg is a hard class in general, but Szczesny makes his exams fair; go to office hours and use the textbook/do T/F problems because TF questions make up a huge portion of quizzes and exams. Weekly hws average 35 Qs, but they prepare you for exams. Hes also funny and genuinely cares and wants to help his students succeed.
Literally nothing was taught in class. I learnt nothing. Everything he said, to every single word, can be found in the textbook. Tests were graded with very tough criterions however. Two midterms and one final, except the second midterm, questions in the exams are not relevant with what is taught in the lesson. Surprised with his high rating...
For this course, get ready for self-learning. If you go to the textbook, you will find that everything this professor said in the class coincides with the textbook. And going to classes wastes a lot of time! If you want to get a high score, go to Youtube or find other professors recorded videos for this course.
Every time his course content is basically copying the content of the textbook onto the blackboard. In this semester, I basically relied on the materials of the professors from last semester to review. He has a total of three exams, and in the final exam he has two sets of papers with different versions. The difficulty of two versions is different.
His lecture is boring and his voice is hypnotic. Nothing useful in class so be ready to study yourself. Two different testpapers in the final, but the questions are totally different. Grading is blurry as two papers are up with different diffculties but curved in the same way. Don't take your class unless you are the "A" student.
Super boring class. Concepts are hard but he is not helpful in any perspective. Hate blurry criterion but he managed to do that in all exams. his taste for jokes are terrible.
This is the most boring professor I have ever met. Although the jokes he sometimes tells are very funny, the content of the course is just to copy the definitions, and the examples are all from the book. His homework has nothing to do with the exam. His score is very vague, even at the end we dont know how much curve is.
If other professors are teaching the course in the semester, pick them instead of this prof without any hesitations :(
TorF takes up huge proportion in exam but you get nothing if you made a mistake. Managed to sleep in his class anyway. Lots of musics. Super good class. Very helpful professor.
The final exam is very difficult and it has nothing to do with what he taught. In order to prevent cheating, he has two different sets of papers for the final exam, but the difficulty is not the same. I also have many sets of papers for other math classes, but usually just change the numbers. But his exams has different questions.
FINAL EXAM IS SO HARD.
The negative reviews for Szczesny on December 22nd 2021 should be taken with a heap of salt. Prior to that date, Szczesny had 0 1 star ratings but then all of a sudden had 11 1 star ratings at around the same hour. The content can be difficult, but his exams are VERY easy and VERY fair. Do your job as a student and study/go to OH.
A lot of people seem to be upset by the fact that they got bad grades and didnt bother putting in the work. Professors lectures can be dull at times, but if you go to office hours he will explain everything to you and more. His exams are very fair, and is the same level of difficulty as the worksheets.
The final exam was long, but it was definitely not unfairly harsh. Linear algebra is a hard course, so you definitely need to put in more effort for this course, but Prof Szczesny is very lenient in grading (though the TAs may sometimes grade harsher)
Very good professor. Learned a lot in his class. Definitely take it again if you can. Professor Szczesny is extremely knowledgeable and caring.
Super funny as somebody mentioned "the test is VERY easy" while curves are applied to the test.
uhh I like it when the mean score is 100 out of 150 and somebody find the test "very easy" hopefullly u aint himself
People do know a 70-80% class average is very normal in college right?? Some of you are getting too comfortable with your B+ averages from online learning
Before December 21st, the scores were all 5 points, but at that time students were taking online or summer classes. Do you think it is comparable to in person classes? From my point of view, the professor is indeed copying notes exactly according to the textbook.
He is a very humorous professor, and sometimes tells us jokes. But the criteria he gave points were vague. TA sometimes makes mistakes, so be sure to check their corrections. In response to the following comments, I would like to say that the level of professors should be reflected in the classroom, not the office hour.
Died in his lectures. Switched my major right after this course. Choose this guy and prepare to suffer.
He knows his stuff and rarely gets corrected in lectures, but the lectures were mainly just really boring. He did little to engage the class and talked in a soft monotone voice which you could definitely fall asleep to. I found the homework to be the best way to learn the material and the lectures were often pointless. He was extremely nice though!
Prof Szczesny is like a hip michael cera, but lectures can be a drag at times. Hw helps reinforce concepts. Lectures aren't mandatory, but because the grade u get is test determined...it would be in your best interest to attend them. The second half of the course is conceptually very difficult, but don't be discouraged. Math is curved generously.
Go to his lecture, and do the homework because the homework is basically the exam.
Dont expect to learn from his lecture, if you choose him, prepare to learn everything by yourself. Exams are pretty similar to practice exams, but really have no idea how he grade the exam
If you have to take his class, try not to take one that lasts 1h15 because he drones on and on, and it's hard to stay engaged in what he's teaching when he doesn't put much effort to keep that engagement. So it's not that he's a bad teacher, I just find it hard to learn in class and end up teaching myself everything through the homework and review.
He is so funny! i've taken three semesters of his class because I love his teaching style. It can get boring sometimes, but math isn't that interesting in the first place. The syllabus makes it seem like it's a super strict class, but if you talk to him he is so understanding and will help you out.
Professor Szczesny is one of the best math professors I've had. He makes his lectures very engaging by incorporating jokes and relating the content to real world applications frequently. The exams are quite reasonable, and the averages are fairly high (was > 90% for midterm 2).
Doesn't know how to teach, just read off every slides, it's A WASTE OF TIME to go to his lecture. Only gives a rough letter grade for midterms, really have no idea how the final grades are established. Test heavy. HW 20%, quiz 15%, Midterm 20% for each and 25% for final. Please, please, please avoid taking his lecture, find another section.
Every Monday I walked into a discussion and failed a quiz. On me as I got lost in lectures early on and struggled to catch up. He is willing to explain concepts to you so stay on top of what you need to know and you'll be fine. If you don't understand something, don't wait to ask.
He's a great guy and super easy to talk to. He has a very interesting sense of humor and is willing to talk to you about almost anything really. I think that Professor Szczesny is super smart and helpful as long as you talk to him outside of class.
Professor Szczesny is awesome! His added humour during class makes the lesson not boring but fun. In addition, his lectures are clear and easy to follow. Recommend 100/10
Down to earth and relatable professor seems to do a good job reaching the students individually. He will go out of his way to help the students who are struggling. Be sure you start working on the weekly quiz problems are soon as they are posted.
Very nice and approachable professor, give good examples and explanations during class. Exams are close to class materials.
explained everything in very clear and precise terms. lots of homework and discussion problems but it is very useful. tests are a lot easier than homework. office hours very helpful. it is clear he cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
i love him japan man
One of the easier math professors. His midterms are very similar to the practice exams. But, the homework isn't enough. Do the discussion problems before the quiz, and you'll be fine. He also curves the midterms at a reasonable amount, and make sures the average grade will be a B (85%), for midterms.
Szczesny was a great lecturer who was good at explaining the rather difficult topics covered in this course well. He was very abstract about the concepts we learned, without a ton of real world examples. He sprinkled dry humor into the lectures quite well, and made it fun to go to them. Exams were a breeze, but covered a lot of material.
Hilarious professor with dry humor. Explains things well. Practice exams are exactly like the actual exam. Do the homework and practice exams and you will succeed.
