has a cool accent.
Approachable, sincere professor. Knows his material, good pace. Considering the other math prof's at berkeley, this man is definitely above average. Only problem i saw is that he sometimes lost control of his 400+ person class.
You can understand him! He is also very easy paced compared to the other Profs I've had.
His tests are really fair. If you know the material well, then it is not hard. Sometimes, his lectures can be repetitive and focuses on the simple examples. But it is a really good course and he knows how to write tests.
Midterms are OK if you can finish all practice exam problems~ not really clear notes~
Awesome professor with a cool accent! He cares about his students and is very approachable and friendly. Very clear with thorough explainations (got him a little behind sometimes), great teacher and great person. Tests are fair but not necessarily easy.
Don't even whisper in his class or he'll get mad!
Gives very good lectures
great
Can not understand lectures due to accent!!
A fine teacher of mathematics who is always willing to answer more questions. Would like to see more theory in his class, though.
zworski's a cool guy. spiffy accent, good at explaining material/answering questions. underhanded jokes make class amusing. results may vary when it comes to exams, can't quite seem to get the difficultly level right.overall an excellent prof with a sense of humor, especially for the math department
Find his lectures are not very clear and useless. He taught mainly with powerpoint. Overall, not that great.
Definitely a cool professor. Cool accent and wit make class fun. Teaches with powerpoint, so he's sometimes not as detailed as I'd like him to be. Overall a great professor.
Really great professor, and math 53 has some fun and interesting material. He's funny sometimes, and don't worry, his accent doesn't detract from the lectures. He's a cool guy.
Tempermental and lazy during his office hours; would become visibly annoyed that I didn't understand his brief explanations. A general message to the math profs here at Cal: WE KNOW YOU UNDERSTAND, so don't rub it in. Don't get pissy when WE DON'T. Lazy lecture style; powerpoint is useless.
He's OK, not the greatest, though he is funny. I agree with the other comments: his powerpoint lectures aren't very good & seem lazy. His exams became increasingly difficult. It seems his exams are algebraically difficult because he uses equations and numbers which are tough to work with under stressful conditions.
This's my 2nd time to take his class, but the class is worse than Math 1B. Lectures were useless, because of using powerpoint all the time. Feel so bad after taking the final>..<
He likes to use complicated numbers to increase the hardness of the test. Unfair~ There is misprint in EVERY lecture.
His power point lectures ARE useless. Very inconsistent test maker: 1st midterm was way too easy, 2nd midterm way too long, final very difficult (but told us the difficulty would be between the 1st and 2nd midterms giving a false sense of security). Overall, a witty professor who just can't teach.
Lectures are boring and not helpful. No cheat sheets on tests. GSIs grade hard. KILLED my GPA. dont take this class with this professor
notice how all the bad comments are on dates AFTER the final/after grades were put on bearfacts. hehe, the final sucked, he gave ridiculously hard practice midterms but no answers (questions on practice VERY similar to exams), he scared me into learning stuff thoroughly which is good, but i still did poorly on the unpredictable 2nd midterm/final
my grade got screwed over by the first midterm, which was way too easy, but I made silly mistakes that brought me to the bottom of the curve =( Hopefully the curve will turn out nicer other semesters, because he is a pretty friendly professor that encourages students to ask questions.
first of all, his accent is sooo cute. anyways, his first midterm screwed me over because the curve was so high and i made stupid mistakes. however, the 2nd midterm/final were more difficult and gave people the chance to really show their stuff. basically, if you do the hw you'll do well. i got an A in the class after getting a C+ on midterm 1.
Pretty organized lectures. The difficulty of exams varied a lot. The final exam was annoying, since a typo significantly changed a problem and wasted a lot of time. Powerpoints were sometimes nice, sometimes not - good to refer to for lecture notes, but often included typos or mistakes. Do the homework. On the whole, not a bad professor.
He is indeed a funny professor but in a unhelpful way. He doesn't motivate you to learn. Lecures are boring. (The online notes are helpful for reviews though.) Take his class if and only if you know math well and want to see him does funny stuff during lectures.
Most reviews are accurate. he is an entertaining lecturer. midterm difficulties were unpredictable. accent is not that bad for native-speakers. i thought the lectures were good, but the MTs tested beyond the basics. DO the practice midterms religiously! MT questions LOOK hard but i realized most needed a "trick" to finish.
Since I was retaking this course, I pretty much understood everything. His lectures and exams covered what the book covered, unlike Kirby. His exams are similar to the practice exams he posts. Make sure to know them! Difficulty of exams was dramatic from 1st MT to 2nd MT and final. It isn't hard to do well. Nearly everything is in the book.
Powerpoint not really usefull. Accent is farily easy to understand. The practice midterms that he gave were very usefull. Many times similar problems appeared on the exams. The class was not bad overall. I would recommend him.
good lecturer, funny and engaging. enjoyable if you like math. that said, he made this class a million times more of a pain than it had to be by writing ridiculous exams that were way harder than the homework, except the first, which was about right but he said it was too easy because to many people did well. i thought education was for learning.
Fun teacher. Fair exams. Good sense of humor.
He's a pretty straightforward lecturer, and he's a pretty funny guy--but he seemed to have lost his sense of humor by the end of the semester. He also seemed to mess up more easily while lecturing. He's also not the best test-writer. The first midterm was way too easy...and then the next midterm and the final had way too many problems.
are you kidding me, hes nice and funny and stuff, but not very patient, he's not very clear either and the midterm that he gave was COMPLETELY different and MUCH MUCH harder than any practice he posted or the class had had.
This class was taught pretty well, although the tests were not scaled at all compared to the homework and examples in class. Zworski is a generally agreeable professor, except when someone talks in his class and he just stops mid-sentence and stares at them until they shut up.
this teacher sucks ... his lectures are nothing like his exams.... if you want an F on your report card... then take this class
The material can be difficult sometimes, but it's just 3D geometry for most of the semester...easy if you're good at picturing stuff in your head. Lately, though, he's taken to using an overhead projector, and he ALWAYS blocks it while he's writing. Other than that, he's very good at making abstract math understandable with examples.
yeah this guy isn't the best. he's not very clear, he makes tons of mistakes on his lecture slides that he doesnt correct when he uploads them, and he's too sensitive and irritable when it comes to people talking. but his accent is cute.
Decent lecturer at best, and a terrible test writer. His exams hardly test for understanding of material; they're just brutal calculations that are a waste of time. As was mentioned, he is always blocking the overhead projector during lectures, which is INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING when you're trying to take notes. Also, I hated his snide sense of humor.
He'd frequently block the overhead projector w/ his shadow & wrote with 1/3 of the transparency outside the viewable glass surface. Then he'd yank the sheet away right after unblocking the view. His midterms were *somewhat straightforward, but computationally heavy & far too long for the allotted 50 minutes. Took a lot of the fun out of Math 53.
probably one of the better professors to take multivariable calc with, but still a lousy prof.
when he wears shorts he is waaaaaaay cooler. he has a sweeet accent and he says "bug" funny. don't worry about memorizing the proofs for the final, if you don't kno them don't worry about it, they're not a big part of the final.
his lectures were very boring and his tests were extremely difficult
Goes over previous lecture at the beginning of the next one--in detail. Essentially does each lecture twice. His tests are horrible. 56% midterm averages, probably a lot worse on the final. The subject is interesting, he explains things just fine (if you can sit through it twice) but his tests were sadistic. Most traumatizing class ever
Boring lectures, rude professor, and tests that are nowhere near what's covered. Avoid at all costs!
His lectures are good for reinforcing the basics of the book and he goes over more complex examples. Seems like an all around nice guy, funny at times, got cranky and more impatient at toward the end of the semester though. Still, recommend him...and his dog.
his class was like milk it was good for 2 weeks
Incredibly hard tests and boring lectures. If you have trouble with this class, you MUST go to SLC.
Funny British accent. Very interesting course material and his presentation is clear and helpful. Basically, everything about the class is great except that his tests are impossible. Very low averages that do NOT separate those who know SOME stuff from those who know NO stuff. Take 53 with another professor but don't rule out sitting in on Zworski.
Horrible horrible professor. Unbearable lectures that were too simple and boring to help convey material. Would snap at the class for no apparent reason. Learned alot more from my GSI in discussions than I did in lecture. Avoid.
Professor Zworski was very clear, very detailed and extremely good in his explanations. His tests were quite hard but the class was less intense than 1B and he was definitely a very fun professor to have. I would definitely take him again!
Zworski was a horrible teacher. His lectures were too simple to actually learn from. And then his final was way harder than the midterms and quizzes. He was also moody and yell at the class for no discernable reason.
His lecturing style isn't all too great. He tends to review what he covered previously for the first 5 to 10 minutes of lecture. He wasn't very clear in teaching us line/surf. integrals, Stokes' & Divergence thms, etc, the most important part of 53. I ended up going to GSI OH right before final. His exams tend to be a bit difficult.
Decent prof. Uses slideshows and projector/chalkboard to teach. Fairly clear lectures and manageable tests.
Great Professor! Lectures very clear. I always knew what to expect on the midterms and final. Also final was fairly easy. Also a very funny and amiable professor. I would definitely take this class again, if I had to that is!
I basically had to teach myself the material. I feel like I got more out of studying on my own for an hour and a half instead of going to lecture. The midterms and final are very hard. Be prepared to work your but off, this is a very difficult class. He is a very nice guy and very knowledgeable, I just did get it.
He was okay, I guess. He always knew what he was talking about, assigned reasonable homework. I hated his midterms and final though. They were hard and tricky and the point distribution was not even. He does not let you use any cheat sheet unlike other math 1b teachers plus his exams were much harder. The tests are curved though.
Took his class as a freshman, 1st sem, coming off a 5 on Calc AB and taking IB Higher Math in HS. But His class was extremely tough. His lectures are very proof-oriented, and I spent most of the time staring mindlessly at the board trying to follow. His tests were very tough, but with a curve I was able to pass. Use your book/GSI a LOT.
Tests were often tricky but his practice midterms and final formats were exactly the same as the actual midterms and finals.
I had Dr. Zworski for two classes twenty years ago when he was a postdoc and I was a freshman. He was a great lecturer and extremely passionate about his subject. His classes were excellent preparation for my later studies in mathematics and career as a mathematician.
Easily my least favorite class so far. He spends ages on proofs and theorems that I couldn't care less about. Very impractical lectures, and a complete waste of time. Unless you're into that kind of stuff, stay away.
He's a really great professor!
Zworski loves doing proofs and explaining theorems. Doesn't really conceptually teach the material though. For example, I don't think we ever did an example surface integral in class, but we were expected to know them. His tests are all right, but his grading is kinda bad because his rubric makes you lose lots of points for the most random stuff.
His sense of humor made the lectures awesome!
Zworski gives very good lectures. He starts off by reviewing what was covered last time every single lecture, and then slowly and clearly moves on to the new topic. Gives lots of examples, even though some are tough. You can learn a lot from lecture if you follow along very closely.
Clear, well-organized, and interesting lectures. He adds some sass here and there which gets the whole class chuckling. Starts every lecture with a short review and takes care to explain how the information from the lecture fits in with the rest of the class. Tests are difficult but fair. Gives test grades back within 24 hours.
Very proof oriented in his lectures. He would often present material that was way more abstract than it needed to be. He always managed to delve into the material, and is quite funny every once in a while. Otherwise, he is very helpful during office hours and takes the time to learn your name. The tests are tough, but fair.
he was a great teacher and his lectures were very useful. his exams were straight from lectures and they were just testing your understanding.
Great lecturer, gives really good summaries of the book. The second half of his lectures tend to be quite dense proofs or examples, but the first half is always introduction to new topics with easy examples. The quizes were weekly but not too difficult if you did the homework.
Prof Zworski was fun and approachable. Didn't do as well for the class but enjoyed my semester with him.
Absolutely hilarious. Even though the content was tough, he explains it quite well and his humor spices things up and makes the class enjoyable. Tests are hard but reasonable, doesnt allow a cheatsheet though. Helpful in office hours but if dont know your stuff he will probably humiliate you in front of everyone else there. Would recommend 10/10.
You can learn so much just by watching him work through examples in lecture, the way he finds clever shortcuts to make complex integrals look much simpler. He also ties concepts back to their analogs in single variable calculus, so thats super helpful for understanding. If you go to office hours twice, hell know your name. Just a lovable guy.
Prof. Zworski is one of my favorites. I learned to say "zed" instead of "zee" as well as how to derive some wave functions. He is a funny and passionate lecturer who cares about his students.
Loved his sense of humor and I was always eager to go to lecture. Makes you work for your grade though - midterm 1 and 2 had 80% averages but final was 50%. Average grade was around a B. I am a math major so I could be a bit biased but I think most of my peers enjoyed his class.
Chill professor, didn't attend many lectures but he did crack some good jokes when I was actually at class. Exams felt fair and practice exams that he gave were extremely reflective of what would be on the actual exam. Gave very generous curves on exams (raw scores seemed be curved to a B average rather than the course average of B-).
His lectures are unclear and his tests are not indicative of the material covered in lecture. I would suggest not going to class and just reading the book and watching youtube because he will go into complex proofs during lecture and yet skip steps for problems solving methods that are important. He also shames people for asking questions in class.
Overall, a good professor. For the most part, he was good at explaining problems and his tests were curved generously. However, he would sometimes dive into crazy proofs that weren't necessary to learn and some examples weren't explained too clearly. He was certainly very funny and would sometimes like to make fun of students.
I might be biased because I ama math major and took a mutivariate course before but I honestly loved Prof Zworski and his class. The midterms very pretty easy/fair and then he caught eveyone off guard by giving one of the hardest finals (average 50%). Zworski also has a hilarious sense of humor and is pretty fun to see lecture!
not very respected by students. they leave early, he doesn't provide all gsi office hours, unclear lectures without full topic coverage, unreasonably hard to catch up/barriers if missed couple of classes. **doesn't record lectures!!!!** sadly, wouldn't reccomend
Professor Zworski is a terrible lecturer with horribly hard exams. Almost seems like he has no regard for the class and keeps it excessively difficult.
Prof. Zworski is very kind and is always willing to answer questions. some lectures are hard to follow, most students who do well read the textbook. lectures are not recorded and his lecture notes are messy. Tests are straightforward and are always problems that are seen in the textbook/hw, fair grade distributions, pretty light homework.
This class is very dense and fast paced. Would not recommend to take without any previous knowledge of multivarible calc. The quizzes every week are also quite difficult depending on who your gsi is.
Bad lecturer, rude during office hours, very sloppy handwriting and notes, course is very test heavy. Don't take this professor if you don't already have some multivar. calc experience. Weekly discussion quizzes can vary in difficulty but those were also graded strictly and difficult for my section. HW is hard to complete but graded on completion.
I found Prof. Zworski's handling of this course particularly infuriating. His lectures are sloppy and obviously not prepared for, he does not post other GSI's office hours, and he behaves snobbishly towards students. Worse, his exams count for a large portion of the grade, but had substantial errors (like illegible graphs) that were ignored.
He'll spend a long period of class on proofs, and does an adequate job of teaching the concepts - however, he doesn't truly solve any challenging problems. He might do an easy, basic example or two during lecture, but even the homework is a lot harder, and you're stuck teaching yourself how to put the concepts into practice! Learned through GSI.
You need to study all the materials yourself. (His exams have nothing to do with his lectures.)
He's humorous. Has a terrific accent
Lectures were not helpful at all. Would just give examples without explaining fully how to do them. Tests were also unlike anything discussed in lecture or in homework. No cheat sheets because he would need to make the test "harder." Be prepared to teach yourself.
Prof. Zworski's lectures were extremely unclear, and although I continued going to them, they did not help me at all. In other words, this class was self-studied completely. His exams were also nothing like the practice exams that he suggested and were graded very harshly. I would NEVER take a class with Zworski again.
Funny lectures, love him as a person. He's an OK lecturer - he really cares, but spends too much time on proofs - ppl sometimes get so lost during lectures, me included. I learnt the actual problem-solving more from my GSI and from teaching myself on HW. He's nice with partial credit and his exams were quite reasonable; & he's accessible- 3.5/5?
Very unclear instruction, teaches poorly in lecture. Publishes his low quality messy notes onto Canvas and that is all the material he gives. Weekly quizzes are very difficult. Would NEVER take a Maciej Zworski class again.
The lectures were poor due to messy handwriting, time wasted on proofs, and vague explanations of topics. Going to a lecture would never allow you to be able to understand how to solve a homework question. I literally had to self-study 90% of this class. Pretty disappointed with my result as the final curve wasn't generous at all.
Lectures were very unorganized and started getting confusing half way through. I had to learn through the textbook. Weekly quizzes. Go to discussion to learn/recap. Prof said he would curve harder discussion sections but I don't think he did that. Very unhappy with my final grade. Practice exams were not reflective of the final.
Funny guy, generally caring. Go to office hours (I got roasted to high hell there lol). I have a lot of respect for him as a person, but his class would be better P/NP. Most lectures not really useful, except some visual demos to reinforce concepts and his witty comments. I learned through textbook and OH. Final curve was actually so bad (C+)
Very poor lecturer, disorganized, messy handwriting. Uses discrete grade bins for exams instead of a continuous curve so barely missing a cutoff can screw you over (think n = 4 Riemann sum instead of an integral). Overall, a negative, tedious, and stressful experience, and not what I was hoping for from my first UCB math course. Wouldn't recommend.
Mixed bag. His lectures were more of a Comedy Show than educational that you won't learn anything going to them. Doesn't help that he refuses to provide a list of GSI office hours so you're completely on your own in this class. Exams were curved down since we did too well. If you care about learning Multivariable, take this class with someone else!
0 clobber and barely barely curved. Math 53 is already a very hard class and his version of it made it even harder. First midterm was easy, second midterm and final were much much harder. I did bad on midterms, but did all the homework, did well on quizzes and grinned the final (got a 75%) and still ended up with a C :( . Never take his class.
His tests are pretty straightforward and are similar to his practice exams. Definitely less homework than other math professors. Be sure to read the textbook though cause his lectures can be a bit hard to follow.
Not a good lecturer. I learned more reading and practicing from the textbook in 1.5 hours than attending lecture. He also seems to despise his students' success. The class did "too well" on the first midterm, so he made ridiculously difficult midterm 2 and final exams. The final exam was curved so the mean was a C+, ruining many grades. Stay away.
Like someone said he uses discrete bins for exams, which makes no sense because it screws people who are on the borderline for an exam over. There obviously has to be discrete bins for your total grade, but having bins for each exam is like rounding before you add numbers instead of rounding after. Astoundingly atrocious mistake for a math class.
If you can take Math 53 with another professor, then I recommend you do that. If not, then prepared to self-teach yourself 90% of the material because his instruction is unclear, more for entertainment than actual learning, and you honestly gain more staying clear from what he says while just focusing solely on the book.
Be prepared to teach yourself all of the content. Lectures were terrible and very hard to follow. First exam was reasonable but he claimed it was "too easy" since the class did well so he made the rest of his exams nearly impossible. He curved the mean of the final to a C+ which destroyed the grade of many in the class.
I am a fairly hard worker, but I got burnt out by the weekly quizzes towards the end. Although I did decently on both midterms, my final brought me down and the grade bins for each item was not that great. His grading system is a bit odd and they are never clear on it. He's also a bit mean during office hours. Definitely deserved better a grade.
His lectures are very fun. He doesn't record lectures, so you (or a friend) should make an effort to go. There are weekly quizzes on Fridays which are not bad and sometimes include extra credit. The practice midterms are very similar to the actual ones (pre-curve avg. is still ~50%) but problems become easy once you understand a particular nuance.
Very Bad professor, focuses on theory instead of actual problems, bad attitude, disrespectful, hard exams, terrible explanation, honestly can't think of anything good, avoid him at all costs
Zworski is a great guy. Really cares about students. Makes his class insanely hard on purpose, but never unfair, and the curve reflected that. He respects hard work most of all and will be blunt about it, but once again never unfair. Funny guy, lectures are a bit too abstract which leave you kinda confused on the homework
Great lecturer, and expects student participation. Very friendly and answers questions thoroughly. Attendance is not mandatory, but gives extra credit on HW if you attend. Exams are almost identical to practice exams. Lots of points for correct answer, less partial credit than most math classes. Make sure to do practice problems before exams.
Lectures can be confusing, but the textbook is a big help. Exams are tough, so stay on top of the material. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for practice and study prep.
Terrible professor RUN as fast as you can math 53 is a hard class and this professor did everything in to make it the WORST class I've taken. His tests were hard, confusing, and there would be typos that would not be acknowledged until mid test, the lectures were confusing, and the curve was TERRIBLE. RUN
Lectures are incoherent, you pretty much have to watch review videos on YouTube if you want any chance at doing well in the course. Two homework assignments and one quiz per week, gets a bit ridiculous when you have work in other classes, a job, research, etc. Could be worse, but definitely not a good professor.
Very nice professor who genuinely cares about his students. He would welcome questions during lectures & was *unintentionally* funny. Lectures were sometimes confusing (but you can always use the textbook!). Weekly quizzes graded on effort, our GSI was also very nice. Exams (so far) have been very similar to practice exams so study off those. GL :)
Math 53 under Zworski super sucks. Not the greatest lecturer, so I had to self teach most of the material. Two homework assignments and a quiz per week. Dude gave us homework during Thanksgiving break and dead week (I thought they weren't even allowed to do that?). Only saving grace is that he does provide practice exams. Avoid if possible.
I wouldn't recommend. Hardest math class I've ever taken. He doesn't teach you have to solve problems, and my awesome GSI taught better than he did. He's funny and nice, but he only gives proofs. His exams are extremely difficult. I've never struggled this much before. Overall, it's not worth it to risk it. Only 10% of his class gets an A.
Very difficult teacher, very mean too. Only shows theorems/proofs of equations gsis are way better explaining topics. Not worth the pain and suffering his tests are.
Quite a test heavy course, but if you put the work in and go to office hours, discussion, lecture and study on your own, they are definitely manageable. Very kind and interesting guy who expects participation in class and really wants to see people work hard. Funny guy as well
He is incredibly rude and passive aggressive to students, especially if they ask questions after lecture. Calculus 3 is typically regarded as a simple subject but his lectures actually make the material harder to understand due to his abstract derivations and examples that make simple topics incredibly complex. Going to lecture inhibits learning.
By far the worst math course I've taken so far. Zworski seems like an alright guy, but he only teaches theory in lectures and not how to actually solve problems. Exams are graded extremely harshly, with very little (almost no) partial credit being given on the final. Avoid Zworski at all costs, wait a semester to take MATH53 with a better professor
RUN. A nice guy, and admittedly a great mathematician. Bro was had hw due during thanks giving and rrr?...?...?... Bad handwriting. Hard exams. Bad graphs for exams.Wired grading system. Make sure to change to a good GSI's section during adjustment period or you have no one to rely on except professor youtube!
This professor has matching questions on exam that you will receive negative point for wrong answers to avoid guessing (even you did not guess at all), and those vector field graphs are not even recognizable that you can't even tell the directions of the arrows... HARD EXAMS (but he gives practices)
The average on the final was a 58% and he didn't curve it. Never ever ever ever take professor Zworski. I genuinely understood ever concept to a tee, had a 90% before the final, scored a 76% which was almost a full std above average and the final still dropped my grade to a B. Absolutely the worst professor ever. DO NOT TAKE ZWORSKI!!!
RUNRUNRUN Not a good lecturer
This professor is good for those who are independent learners. I spent my time studying from the textbook carefully, which he follows closely anyway. The few lectures I did go to he added interesting new perspectives - seems like most people here became complacent with how chill they were. Lots of material provided and bins were adjusted
While Zworski isnt the best lecturer as he focuses more on proofs and theory then application, I feel that everything on the tests are things covered in his lecture. He does not assign that much HW, but the problems assigned are challenging. Midterms 1 and 2 were pretty fair and really similar to the practices, but the final was extremely hard.
lectures are genuinely incomprehensible, points are deducted for the smallest of reasons. bad class
Zworski is a funny guy and I enjoyed his lectures, but his reasoning for concepts isn't very fleshed out and he sometimes is just wrong and someone has to correct him at least twice a lecture. also, a gsi made a backhanded comment about cheating on my final because I had to learn a concept on my own, and failed me for it. be careful
Professor Zworski is great at bringing complicated and abstract math topics into the real world with physical examples. His commentary during his lectures is never boring to the trained ear.
He did end up actually curving the final, but nonetheless still wouldn't recommend Zworski. The class was exam heavy (90% of our grade) and he was very big on giving us negative credit for questions we got wrong. His handwriting is definitely messy and doesn't record lectures but is obviously a talented mathematician. Overall wouldn't recommend
This course was a very negative experience. Exams did not reflect multivariable calculus and emphasized edge cases complex algebra and obscure trig identities. Lectures were unclear and unorganized and did not align with homework or exams. Final exam average was an F. I earned an A- but would not recommend this class.
Overall not a bad professor, but be ready to learn and teach yourself a lot of content on your own. A funny lecturer and was usually pretty engaging but most of the time I left, confused and wondering what to actually do. Midterm one was easy but the next midterm and final had much worse averages but the curve on them felt somewhat fair.
Please do NOT take with Zworski. Nothing in his lectures is comprehensible and he only teaches through abstract proofs that have no application when it comes to actual problem solving. Learned everything through YouTube videos and the GSI because he cannot teach.
Lectures were solid, not as bad as other reviews suggest. More of an emphasis on theory and derivations (arguably the most important part), so example problems shown in lecture were often relatively simple, but nothing felt too unreasonable. The final was tricky but exams are essentially identical to the practice exams (in content and difficulty).
Lectures were actually pretty decent, honestly was a great supplement to the homework/textbook imo, and it really helped you understand the actual mechanics behind some of the things he was teaching. Pretty hard exams but very similar to practice tests. Wants students to work hard, very approachable in office hours if you know your stuff.
I think he's good. He's clearly very good and loves math, so his lectures are honestly pretty engaging. Note that he does do proofs of theorems, so just don't copy those. HW problems are not graded but honestly way harder than anything you see on exams. Practice exams are super similar to real exams. Just go to class honestly half the people don't.
Attend his lectures to get a good laugh and watch derivations/proofs for important concepts. Learned a lot just doing homework, reading textbook/watching YT, and GOING TO DISCUSSION. Tests were tricky but similar to practice and the final had a pretty generous curve. Overall, just go to lecture/discussion and you will be fine!
lectures are incoherent sometimes/not relevant info. just study the textbook and attend discussions to learn. practice tests were similar to midterm which is the best part of this class, although the final was significantly harder than the practice finals imo. grading is not clear ever. weekly quizzes but pass fail 80% final/midterm category
Overcomplicates subjects that are relatively easy when I self-study, which you should absolutely be prepared to do when you take this class. Bring back math professors who care.
Zworski is a fine professor. Very enjoyable lectures, nice accent, super sweet guy. Content taught in lecture is easier than homework/exams so make sure you study. Weekly pass-fail quizzes, which my GSI graded very leniently, not too much hw. Do ALL the practice exams, especially the last one, because exams are often based on the last test.
