Great class because there was no project 6!
This class was useless. Did not learn anything. Teacher only taught 10 lectures, the rest were presentations. Didn't give feedback when needed. Didn't receive grades before walking into the exam. Added information needed to know less than 24h before the exam. Do not take as a 400-level teacher.
Not such a great teacher, reads off slides and there is so much material to cover. Announced that it was cumulatative a month before the exam.
This class was such a waste of time. She never gave us any feedback information before the presentations and do you think all the students are well prepared for a good presentation?! in the end they are students and will all prepare the presentation one night before.
This prof is really great! She's nice and helpful. Whiever said the class was useless doesn't know what they are talking about. If you learn your material you'll come out with plenty of new stuff rom this course (just because ppl passed with minimal work doesnt mean they took advantage of this course). It was a great class!
I just love her and I love her class! She is great. At the begining I wasn't very interested in the material but after completing her course I decided to pursue a gradate degree in Genetics!
I just love her and I love her class! She is great. At the begining I wasn't very interested in the material but after completing her course I changed my Graduate school plans! If you can take this class :) you won't regret it.
Good teacher, good class A+
I didn't like this teacher. She spends a lot of time just joking around and talking stupidities. She thinks she's funny, but she isn't, so that's kind of funny. But it really isn't.
Well, She has 1 hour and 15 minutes but for 1 hour she keeps on talking about stupid things and the last 15 minutes she wants to cover over 20 slides. She is rude and going to her office is useless because she just keeps on laughing like crazy and does not help you at all. If you ask her a question about the lab report, she will not help you.
if you read the book + take notes, you will do well. She gives very helpful check lists for midterm and final exam. No need to go to class if you read textbook. Readings are long though.
If only she wouldn't giggle every time you asked a question....
Amazing prof, light hearted, tries really hard to engage the class, cracks jokes from time to time, knows her material, very helpful with your questions, very nice lady.
Very intelligent prof who knows her material. She is a skilled lecturer who is really good at holding everyone's attention, as well as making things clear. The textbook does become a rather expensive paperweight if you go to all the lectures, but she prepares you for the midterm and final very thoroughly. One of my favorites.
don't listen to the good comments, people! this woman's english is fairly poor, whereby making it difficult to pay attention to the content. she does giggle a lot. she doesn't know enough about her subject. get the textbook, do the moodle. don't go to class if you do the other two. you might find her sweet, but she irritated me! means well though..
Very bad professor. She hardly understands the material she is supposed to be teaching. When someone asks her a question, she often has trouble giving the answer. How do people like this get phDs? Her lectures are a waste of time. The tests are easy, but I'm not in school to take tests. I want to learn, and she does not help. Textbook is good :/
This teacher is IMPOSSIBLE to understand. Honestly If you can avoid going to her class DO,just read the textbook (even though she says NOT to buy it :S)which is great....VERY FRUSTRATING, cannot answer questions COMPREHENSIBLY.... Giggles constantly which is annoying NOT cute!!!!!!!
Explanations terrible. Better off studying material on moodle. Textbook far too detailed for what is asked on the exams. If you are not scientifically inclined, only study moodle notes, get free tutoring at Concordia and you can get an A. Trust me.
Every class she will take a clicker quiz, you need to study her power point very well
Her explanations are confusing, incomplete and often wrong. Her slides were full of mistakes. Impossible to learn anything even though I attended the lectures and listened in class.
It is funny that the people who give bad reviews are the ones I see in class chatting instead of paying attention to the teacher. This professor is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. She tries to make it as enjoyable as Biology can be and she puts all her slides online prior to class. She made me go from disliking BIO to enjoying it!
Teacher not very knowledgable but her midterm and final are easy if you study her slides and theory from lab book. The lab reports are bit harder but ask for help to the TA
I dont understand a word she says.. makes the course very hard
She is one of the best professors I have so far. Interesting lectures, informative course materials, which immersed me with the extensive biological knowledge, at the end benefits my psychology studies tremendously. Must read before class, pay attention in class, study powerpoint and go to tutorial. Then A would be in your pocket.
Horrible! If you go to her office to ask her questions about labs (which is what the course is based on) she ignores you and is rude. Does not care at all. TA's are either rude/mean or stupid and don't know what they are doing. Labs are interesting but you must do a lot of work yourself.
She's a great teacher! If you actually listen in class, take notes and read the book, you'll do great. I can't stand biology but I had to take it for a pre req. I enjoyed her class and if you have any questions she's really helpful!
I took Advance Genetic (BIOL 461, Winter 2010) and Advance topics in Biology (BIOL 498N & 498O, Fall 2011) with Dr. Madoka. Excellent professor, very helpful, and knowledable in the field.
Avoid, labs are difficult, they're supposed to boost marks
Don't expect any hlp from her-you won't get it. Rude & obnoxious. If u email her, don't expect a response for a few days. Ask too many questions and she will treat you like a pest. The labs are graded extremely harsh - its very subjective. Ppl who like her are the same as her - superficial and obnoxious, typical of "know it all" science students.
If you want so succeed in this class, you need to put a lot of effort in your lab reports, write your labs according to the guide. It's a lot of work, but you'll learn a lot. This prof is present to guide you, not to do the work for you! She is patient and explains well, you just have to be willing to put some effort.
She is a mean women. Doesn't explain anything. Requires a lot from you. It just not worth it! You will not get any understanding from her about any personal or not personal problem. Thinks that people are robots! Come on, it's ok to be late sometime, from her point you will lose points for this.
Bio 202 is extremely easy if you are a hard worker. All you need to do is a) attend every class (so you can do the quizzes, and she lets you miss 3), b) do the online quizzes, c) memorize the power points from class. You should get an easy A+. All the complaints here DO NOT apply to people who put in the work. The class is simple.
Avoid. Worst teacher I have seen. If you go to her office she doesn't speak to you...
She is so great! Really funny and engaging, I really enjoyed her class. Her slides are really clear/colorful and most of the exam is based on them. The group project is a piece of cake if you read the instructions. She posts a lot of funny and interesting recommended stuff on moodle too. You are graded on participation so don't expect to skip alot.
She is a really nice teacher. I would totally recommend it even if the content is a bit easy, she is very fun! The midterm is a way harder then the final! If you go to class, do the online quizz and learn her slides you will be fine!
Don't bother if you can avoid. She teaches a lot of irrelevant or overbearing stuff and then asks the most specific questions on tests. You have to study her notes and read the textbook, basically self-teaching yourself. Explains stuff in lectures that are not on the slides so attend every class.
I took biology 202 online with her and she has to be one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Her lectures are organized, make no sense, and consist of terrible grammar. She assigns a group project which makes no sense seeing as how its an online course and she forces students to grade others work. Her final is also terribly hard do not take her
She's unapproachable and rude. You feel like your bothering her if you need help with the material (even in office hours!!). She also doesn't explain very well, lectures are confusing... so this class quickly became a nightmare. You have to learn on your own... (However, the TA's for the course were awesome!)
The worst online course I have ever taken. The grade split is ridiculous and she gives a 7 part group project (remember this is an ONLINE class) that is worth less than 10% of the overall all grade, and also has us grading other's projects. Her material is overbearing and her tests are SO hard, even for hard workers. Buyer beware.
I took bio 202 as my first online class at Concordia this winter semester (2019). This class is not difficult, if you put effort. Her slides are clear, straightforward and she explains things very well. She provides examples and visuals to make learning pleasant. Pick a good group for the project. Exams are easy if you study hard. Quizzes are easy.
Madoka is very passionate and sweet, even through an online class. The material is heavy but she makes it interesting and as long as you stay on top of the weekly lectures, you shouldn't have a problem. The weekly quizzes, the group project and the final were all pretty easy and not all that time-consuming. Would definitely take her again!
Despite teaching in a pandemic, I thought her way of delivering the course was nice (videos with interactive questions). Her exams are fair and very doable if you study (nothing outside the lectures). My only issue with her is that she's not the most compassionate or understanding professor out there, rarely responds to emails and is a tough grader
Avoid taking her class!! There was so much content to study and more than half of that content didn't even come up on the finals. provides no guidance whatsoever. Literally the worst experience I've ever had.
Such a good teacher ! She is very well organized and makes everything very easy to understand. She explains very well and the exams are quite easy if you study all the material.
She's super sweet and answers emails when she can. Clearly cares about her students. She's not a tough grader as long as you understand the material she won't be too strict about how you word things
Although the class is a 200 level it certainly doesnt t feel like one The material is too heavy and chapters are ridiculously long. The final exam was based on all 12 chapters and no clarification was given what do focus on, so many things did not appear on the final. It was a overwhelming class, quizzes and group projects should be worth more
it's a NO. super stressful. do not take it.
The class isnt actually too bad and the content is interesting, but Madoka kinda sucks. Shes doesnt like answering questions and acts rude and annoyed if you do. Also pretty condescending. She makes the class harder than it has to be, and tends to rush through lectures when she realizes she running out of time.
The course was interesting, especially if you want to continue in research. Very demanding but worth it. 4 hours labs + 12-15 hours lab reports. Exams are easy if you understand the labs and go over her lectures. However, as a person, Madoka is terrible. Not accessible and condescending. She once shut the door in my face because "she was busy".
I'm not sure where the comments are coming from about labs. The labs are pretty easy and the reports as well if you stick to the instructions. The comments about Madoka are accurate. Very condescending and dismissive; doesn't seem like she actually wants to be teaching. Not understanding and won't provide any help. Take it with another prof.
Shes such a mean lady. She responds to emails pretty fast, but she provides 0 help with the course, which is actually pretty interesting. Shes gets annoyed at questions and treats you like a nat if you ask for help.
The class is easy, albeit very time consuming. The lab reports take forever to write. She's not nice at all, and is actually kind of hostile. Really nitpicky and she seems to hate students, as if everyone is just bothering her and never good enough. She told me off in an email for sending her an email, like what's your problem.
Hated this class. The reports were truly awful to write. TAs would take forever to grade the reports to the point where you would be submitting your second to last report while only having feedback from 2 reports. The grading scheme for the reports are also not clear enough causing students to lost marks because they didnt know to include things
I would NEVER take this class again, the prof is very hostile and seems annoyed when you ask a question and replies in a condescending manner. This class is a pain, never-ending material. As for the group project, TA's or the prof never answer emails and if you get a bad group you are basically screwed.
Overall the class itself is not difficult and it is easy to do well. The group project for this course, however, was horrible. She does not respond to emails about issues with group members and you are essentially stuck dealing with inactive group members (doing the work yourself). Also, little to no feedback on the project prior to deadlines.
She is a bad teacher. She doesn't explain things properly or clearly. She doesn't answer her emails and will laugh in your face if you have a question she thinks is silly. The final covers all 12 chapters and is worth 40%. She makes you do group work and correct other students' work. Overall she's just a bad prof and a bad, arrogant person. Avoid!!
I don't really understand most of the criticism here. She has been lovely to me through the previous semester; it's fairly easy to schedule an appointment with her on Moodle if you want to discuss an exam or a specific lecture. Is BIOL202 a hard class for non-science students? Sure. But is it interesting? Yes! So I do recommend it :)
Very good teacher. the subject is not easy and requires to know a lot
She was a good teacher but sometimes she can be hard to understand. Her test are very content heavy you need to use the textbook! Her lecture are also kind of all over the place and the online setting made it worse. There's a lot of homework but it also makes the grade more spread which im happy about.
Absolutely hated this class and the sole reason for this was madoka. Extremely hostile, rude and narcissistic. Content itself was easy to understand but her grading style and teaching methods ruin whatever good can come from this course. Did not receive feedback for lab reports until very late in the semester, so impossible to improve future grades
Concordia should be ASHAMED to have such a person in their institution! I've NEVER in my life encountered someone so VILE and BITTER. It goes beyond just the grade; I'm appalled and simply just beyond disgusted by how she treats students. Even filing a complaint seems futile; Concordia doesn't care.
I used to love Biology but now I hate it because of Madoka. Whatever she's going through with her life she's unfairly taking it out on the students.
A bully. Avoid at all cost if you can. If you must take it, don't let her intimidate you, put your foot down, keep your head up. Best of luck
The material isn't difficult, I found professor's explanations clear and sufficient. Labs are good and straightforward, reports are not difficult but lengthy. We all have different cultural backgrounds, and in my perspective, Madoka is strict but very fair. Attend class, watch videos, take notes, talk to TAs and prof if needed - and you'll be fine.
Awesome professor that cares for all students. The more you put into the class (readings, questions, office hours) the more you get out of it. Her lecture are clear and useful if you want to work in a molecular / cell biology & or biochemistry lab. She gives fair feedback and has clear grading criteria along with a highly structured course.
You have no choice but to take her if you are in Biol. She is like a grandma trying to discipline her grand kids. You simply have no choice but to do exactly what she asks for. She loves having numbers for everything and can't understand concepts. Her reports are graded based on having the right template rather than understanding the labs.
She sets her students up for failure and I will stand behind that. Her emails are condescending and she treats and speaks to her students like children. She consistently threatened us with a 0 if we didn't "follow rules". The fact that it was an intro to bio course and she gave us all that irrelevant unnecessary work was ridiculous. AVOID!!!!
The purpose of labs "how to write perfect lab report". Emails you on Sunday saying the deadline has changed to Sunday midnight instead of next week. Ignorant professor, gives 2hr pre rec lec but also you have to go to useless waste of time review session. If you have other options AVOID if not My condolences.
Prof not understanding at all. She struggles a lot with her own material and even basic pronounciation of compounds etc. Makes classes extremely hard to follow
Horrible professor and her class, the lab is really important for future lab-jobs, but how a professor can be like this who doesn't even know how to make a good class structure? Absolutely hating the class and the prof thinks we don't have any other classes except this one! Her lab report schemes unnecessarily long and don't make any sense. AVOID
The grading scheme of the lab reports are terrible you follow it and end up loosing a lot marks. Be prepared to loose a lot of marks on your report. She is terrible. I think she wanted to be a physician but ended up being a professor and take that on students.
First time saw any professor telling on the questions you will get neg marks if you did mistake. This is weird and she is the weirdest. Avoid at any cost please!
She seems bubbly and energetic, but this course is terrible. The in-class lectures are disjointed and unclear, the online lectures disappear after three weeks for no good reason. The labs are fine, but the reports are unnecessarily tedious with needless and stupid grading. Can be condescending. Does not respect your time, or you as an individual.
Honestly she should check her ratings here and should stop giving us her "fake" smile. And I don't understand why she closes the lecture videos when we are not even finished with the semester? Seriously, we paying the university of course she has no right to lock them. I am feeling we should tell the dept how flawed structured this imp course is.
She does not respect students and if anyone do mistakes or don't follow her rules-regulations perfectly, she will act rude and ignore you which will make you feel low. I wish there were any other sections so that I could change my class. The class contents are easy but she makes everything really hard.
Pretty meh professor, she def is not a good lecturer and is not capable of instructing as a 300lev prof. Her lab grading scheme is not clear. you realize you missed stuff that you didn't even know you had to mention. The lab is lovely and the course concept is pleasant but the prof is just mid to low.
This is my first review of a class ever.. and its my last semester. I took this elective and I am a accounting major and it was the worst decision. Do not take, it has so much reading and memorization. This is not a 200 level elective.. Final exam is in person this semester. This class is way too demanding, more demanding than any COMM or Major.
she's so rude and uncomsiderate of others. doesn't take the time to care for her students. when she don't understand her excuse is “this is biology”. never again
This class is a lot of work but it's super interesting. The prof is always available to help. She wants students to succeed. This isn't an easy elective due to the workload but if you truly understand the material, the exams are extremely fair and not meant to trick you. I recommend staying on top of the lectures+ readings and you should do well.
I was nervous about this class bc of the bad reviews but don't let them scare you! I didn't find her rude at all.Yes there is a lot of material If you review the lectures and do the online quizzes you will do fine it's mostly memorizing. The exam are fair mcq + 3-5 short answers. The midterm is protected online and the final is cumulative in person.
Avoid this prof and if it's a requirement for your major, take it in the end before graduating.
Super clear grading criteria (which is rare), lots of feedback & did exam preps on Zoom for both midterm & final with practice questions similar to the actual exams. She does refuse to answer questions not relevant to the specific course (too advanced, etc.). Requires you to put in the work for sure but she gives all the tools to succeed.
She is well-organized with her lecture notes, with the assignment instructions and with announcements. Communication is super clear so that students are never left confused what's required. She's very clear with what are fun facts to know and what are things to remember if you pay attention in class. This makes reviewing so much easier.
I absolutely loved her class! I was nervous about this class due to poor reviews, but don't be fooled. She knows how to simplify complex theory with passion and clarity, gives great lifestyle advice, and is very organized, making exams easier. Some find her rude, but because this is a heavy theory class, ask questions before or after class instead
Madoka shows a clear understanding of the material she teaches, but doesn't know how to teach it well enough. Lacks clear direction in lectures for a zoom-out process, and just focuses entirely on a zoomed-in one. You will learn the material better after class, which defeats the purpose of class if it weren't for jazz quizzes. Proceed with caution.
She is very nice and helping.
