She is a very strict grader, but also inexperienced. She does not know how to grade essays properly. Force mostly on grammar. If u write well, you'll do fine. There is homework everyday. It is an okay class if u know how to manage your time. She gives pop quiz on reading assignments.
Dont miss class or she will take 10 points off your grade
mrs. sands was an overall great teacher, her attendance is strict, and the essays suck, she's an extreeemmmeeely strict grader when it comes to essay my advice is to submit your paper tos smarthingking.com before you actually submit to her for any corrections and make suureeeee that you do alll your homework and you'll be find but the CLASS=HARD!!
Mrs. Sands uses the text books religiously, however, she is an extremely helpful professor. She is sweet and full of kindness. I am going to take her in the Fall.
DO NOT SKIP CLASS! She's a stickler for attendance. If you ask for her help, she will; i.e. on essays if you ask her to revise it she will give input as long as its way before due date. Bedford Reader assignments *readings* ALWAYS a 10 question quiz the next day. Do the work and you will DEFFFFF pass the class.
Good professor. I love that she posts your grades on the Cf website. This makes it very easy to keep track of your grade. Also, do the homework from the book, write well, and come to class. Usually, her classes go pretty fast. She teaches with power point, and sometimes break into groups to review eachother's essays. She is pretty too sorta.
Good teacher. really helped me learn how to write papers properly. ALWAYS do the readings because she gives pop quizzes on them. and only miss class if you absolutely have to because she takes points off.
Very strict on ATTENDENCE and grading ESSAYS!!! she teaches very well and is extremely organized with inclass and online assignments. she updates our grades constantly and gives opportunity for extra credit. just follow the syllabus.great professor, she knows what shes doing, but just really strict on grading essays.
Good teacher but dry, boring class but then again how fun can you make 1101? plenty of quizzes and tests. Lots of work, if you have other heavy classes avoid her for time sake, if not don't fret. Organized, easy to understand, but I do wish there was more flexibility to change thesis, papers, ideas, and topics.
very strict lady. she gives a lot of quizes witch are pretty easy (if you read the millions of chapters she requires read). and she takes 3 points off of your finall grade every day your absent. just throwin my 2 cents in i would have gotten another teacher. oh wait i will because next semester i have to take enc1101 again!!!!!
Really nice lady. Way!!!! to hard on grading papers never got below a A on a paper before this class. In there i couldn't even get a B.
Don't try and be creative, just give some cliched work exactly as she says it even its it's bad. She has no personality. Tons of work, so if you have other demanding classes avoid her. It's not terrible if you get her, you will learn but there are better teachers with that are more enthusiasm about their work. unreliable grading too.
Quiet but very approachable. Just ask questions even if you repeat yourself. I took this class SummerA along with 2 other classes, had no idea I had too many classes. Haven't been to school in 27 years. She will help as long as you ask. I made a B+. I am taking her for 2 more LIT2330 and ENC1102.
I grew up with a father as an english teacher and let me warn you, this professor does not know how to grade essays. She deducts more points for doing something incorrectly than she does for not doing it at all (such as labeling sentences in essays). Almost impossible to earn an A on any essay. She treats it like a 4000 level legal writing course.
She's strict, and grades hard. I left the final, still not understanding anything. She's nice, but I don't recommend her. The grammar tests are ridiculous. She will help you after class if you approach her, but in class teaching wasn't great.
Class was challenging, but learned a lot. Take her class if you are serious about your education!!
She was terrible, she helped me with nothing at all, i took ap english in highschool and passed the college wide test and got a 4 out of 6 state wide grading rank and yet my first paper she gave me a 65. terrible teacher i promise you WILL regret taking this class!!!!!!
Prior to her class, I was scared to take her after reading the reviews. I have her currently and she is a pretty straight-forward professor in telling you what she wants. Fair grader - you will get the grade you deserve. Makes you write a lot of essays, but all prof. do. Offers extra credit. And you can get an A on the essays, I received 2 out of 4
Nice teacher, some extra credit given. This is an easy class if you know basic English. Essentially, you learn to write essays. If you complete all of the assignments and try your best on the writing assignments you will do well.
Wake up boys and girls your not in Kansas anymore! If you think you can just slide through on your good looks, don?t take her. Then you?re not doing yourself any justice. If you?re serious about your education, I highly recommend her! Go to class, don?t be late, read your assignments, turn in your work, learn from your mistakes. She is an ama
Assigned a book a week. Had quizzes over the books. Had to write essays. A few other homework assignments. She offered extra credit and is a really nice helpful teacher. Had a lot of discussion in class. Make sure you participate because it is part of your grade. If you enjoy reading, take this class. I really enjoyed the class and the teacher also
Sands is... uggh... well, they have to employ SOMEONE to teach at a Community College. You definitely wont get this kind of professor at a University. Disorganized, scatterbrained, and pretty annoying. Also, very liberal.
Lets you know upfront what she expects, which seemed like a lot at first, but all essays worked up to final research paper.Attendance is a must. Tried to keep class engaged.
She was more interested in her personal life than teaching. I was excited to take this class and was very disappointed. She constantly spoke about herself and her partner. She must not realize that I had to pay a lot of money to take her class. Also she missed 5 classes out of about 14. Not good.
Very straight foward prof. lets you know upfront what she expects. Show up to class on time every day and turn in all assignments on time. Ask for help if needed.
Unlike many, I think Mrs. Sands was awesome! She straight forward about what she wants and is very helpful.I have never seen a teacher that takes so much time to educate her students.
If you are going to criticize an english professor and complain about the class, at least use correct spelling and grammar. No wonder many of you had a difficult time. I also saw a comment about how the class limits creativity. It's not a creative writing class. Simple as that. I received an "A" in her class during the Fall '10 semester.
I dont understand why so many people disliked her. I thought her class was not difficult at all and easy to pass. Shes a nice person and shes fair. Overall, I have no real complaints.
I had her for summer school, with everyday attendance. Quizzes are given promptly on Mondays-read the material! Alot to cover, we flew over it. Her essay set up lead you right into the final term paper. She missed a day as her husband had surgery that didn't go perfect. I'd take another class with her anytime. Do the work assigned, and you're fine.
Awesome instructor. Not much else to say.
Class is pretty boring and you have a quiz every class on the previous night's reading. none of the reading is more than 5 pgs. essays she is strict on, but her class is easily passable
Mrs. Sands is very nice. BUT she is a ridiculously HARD grader. The way she grades papers is insane. Unless you are fresh out of high school OR your major is literature get ready for a very difficult semester. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!! You're going to need it. Hard course, awesome professor. :)
I had Mrs. Sands for ENC1102 and Chldrns Lit. She is a very hard essay grader, but if you follow her rubric you will do well. She is available to help as needed. I loved the open forum we had regularly in her class also. She offers extra credit, which I suggest you take. My final grade was an 'A'.
I personally didn't like her as a professor. I felt like compared to a lot of other people I know who are taking the same class with a different professor, we did a lot of pointless essays, and we had to have meetings with her and a LOT of assignments. Working full time+this professor = not a good idea. I got a D. I am now retaking this class.
People on here failed to mention important information: She has reading quizzes pretty much every class, and if you miss it, no retakes. -_- She has a lot of little essays often on what you read, and then 3 big ones. After you take your first test, EVERYTHING is crammed. It's super hard for people with full time jobs.
Not a cakewalk, as some might expect, but it's certainly a doable class. The reading material is much more interesting than most lit classes, and a lot of the classwork is based around discussion. There are few reminders about upcoming assignments, so be sure to stay on top of those. Take advantage of extra credit opportunities and you'll be fine.
I really enjoyed Professor Sands's class. A lot of people may say there is a lot of work but there really isn't. Just keep up with the readings and be sure to journal them. I also loved the in class discussions. Overall, just a really, really nice woman.
She is not very good with the online class, I assume she would be much better face to face. I do not find her very organized and the only way she can help you is if you can meet her at the college. This is not easy when you work full time and out of town. Think twice before you take her class online.
OMG, at first I thought this class was going to be hard but it's not. You have 3 essays 600 words, 6 short essays 250 words, and journals that she just gives you correct for if you do them. You will have a 5 question quiz in the beginning of class very easy.
Very strict grader, does not bend her rules, no second chances. Takes more points off for mistakes than giving points for what's correct. Prepare to spend hours at a time to get a good grade with her. I would recommend using her as a last resort for online ENC.
She was not helpful at all. Does not care about her job or students like a teacher should. When asked for help, she refuses. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!
Was not helpful at all. Did not have things clearly drawn out. I had several people that have taken this course with over professors, overlook the syllabus and assigments and everyone agreed, absolutly ridiculous.
Awesome professor! Most of her lessons are recorded, so you can hear her lectures as if you were in a real class, not an online one. I don’t understand these students that complain about the work- IT’S COLLEGE; it’s not supposed to be easy just because it’s online. If you’re not willing to do the work, what are you expecting, a free diploma?
Sands gave out a lot of pencil pushing work which was just a waste of time. She could make a big deal out of nothing. Hard grader. If she decides she doesn't like you, you are done for. I would suggest anyone but this lady.
A great professor. If i had to take an english comp class again i would take it with her!
Nice lady, has a few writing assessments; Nothing non expectant. Tough grader, so stick to the basics. Don't try to exceed your intellect. With that said she is a great teacher with low expectations, unlike other teachers.
Six 300 word writing assessments (single paragraph), all while writing three 650 word essays in between themes. Each class there is a quiz on the previous day's read; open class discussions. Follow the syllabus/a writers reference and be rewarded greatly. A great teacher, whom teaches well. Highly recommended for those willing to learn.
Amazing professor! Offers plenty of extra credit to help your grade at the end. Highly recommend taking her!
She was not very straight forward with her teaching methods. The students had to form study groups frequently because none were fully able to comprehend her teaching method. I enjoyed it because we did a lot of poems, and short stories, and watched a few Shakespeare movies. Her class overall was fairly difficult.
Her assignments ARE NOT CLEAR at all!She only responds to emails between certain times, know exactly what to do before the assignment is due. VERY tough grader! I work full-time and would be up till 2-3am every night to finish the work.I was able to see my grade compared to the class average. I was doing A LOT better then most and barely got a B-
Pros: She is pretty quick on grading assignments; which, I liked so you can see your overall grade. Her final exams (2) are only worth 10%. Cons: This class will definitely keep you busy. Her directions are very unclear. (So read them very CAREFULLY!) She is a very tough on grading (essays) -felt more like a ENC 2 class.
Mrs. Sands is a great teacher, she is very helpful. She explains all of her assignments in detail. If you don't understand something. She is always willing to explain anything. I would recommend anyone to take her class.
Mrs. Sands is an amazing teacher! She gives clear instructions and is willing to explain things to you if you need further explanation. She is a tough grader on tests but as long as you follow her instructions you should do well. A lot of work but easily done in a few hours and quite a bit of group work.
Mae Sands is a fairly good teacher. If you know English, good grammar, spelling and have an understanding about MLA. Then A+ won't be hard. ENC1101 Some assignments are unclear but she will help you. Just do the assignments and you got a good grade.
Professor Sands is a good teacher, quite a bit of work in the class but if you stay on top of it it is OK. My Labs was the only bad experience in this class. That software is not very clear for navigation. It was my only hindrance in the class. Learn it early, and stay on top of it.
Pretty laid back until you miss ONE of her classes. EMAIL her to reschedule ANY quizzes if you're going to miss class for ANY reason! Good syllabus. She does omit 2 quizzes & 1 assignment. 3 tests-- 1st being hardest due to literary terms & lots of reading. Final is questions from 3 tests only. Read the stories & take notes to do just fine
Really interactive lectures. Bases her class on conversation and always listens to the thoughts and opinions of students.
I didn't like the class at all. So many group projects. Plus you have to read a lot. Tough grader. I thought I was going to fail and everything. I don't even know how I passed haha.
Not clear at all. Would NOT recommend this course at all. Non of her work is clear. Shes very unorganized. Not a good professor at all. All of her work is thrown at you with no help or explaination. Pick any other professor BUT this one, if you plan on taking ENC1101. I hope there is chance in the future with her and this course and she changes it.
Great instructor who gives clear, honest feedback. She genuinely cares for her students. Will help out if she can.
Mae Sands was one of the worst professors I have had. I had her for ENC1101 online. She expected perfect papers even though she didn't teach anything or give feedback about any of them. Her assignments were confusing and several people misunderstood her, resulting in a bad grade with no chance to redo anything. Save yourself. Just don't take her.
Least favorite teacher. She tore apart my papers with ridiculous feedback, when she gave any at all. I'm hoping to dispute my most recent grade. Would not recomend. Bad time.
Sands is just awful!
Not a very good professor, The course is terrible very tedious and time-consuming with busywork. She pushes a political agenda anytime she can And shes just pretty lame
Im sure Professor Sands is an intelligent and kind individual in real life. But in the online class she does not explain her assignments, if you want to even find out who your assigned partner is you have to work for it, if your assignment is not in compliance with the nonexistent instructions, you will get a terrible grade. Her class misery.
This is my second time taking Professor Adams. Shes an awesome Professor! I've taken twice because I wasn't satisfied with my first grade, I didn't do the final exam. The course set up was very understandable and easily accessible. I HIGHLY recommend her. She gives good feedback and actually want ALL of her students to pass....( to be continued)
continued..... I will say participation is important. And as far as the textbook. You need it for some assignments and refer to for the quizzes. So you should definitely use the books (both of them).... This class is a light class. We have mini quizzes and journals each week. Sometimes you'll get a discussion post but its really nothing hard.
Professor sans is terrible beyond terrible, she tries to inject her political views and grade you on her version of it. Shes terrible awful not overly bright and completely incompetent save yourself time and money take a different professor
Sands is an awful professor. Shes like some sort of a political nut bag who will try to inject her political views into your work and grade you harshly if you have a different view. Plus shes a hack a second rate professor at best. She sends out instructions in slang just sad and pathetic
Sands does not care. If she gives a bad grade for not following her non existent rubric? Its your own fault. If you follow the book and not her non existent instructions? Its your own fault. Have a question? She will be condescending or just ignore you altogether. She makes me want to quit communications as a major altogether. Lazy. Arrogant.
Professor sands is terrible, shes very unprofessional and her laziness is your problem. Shes one of those professors that just phones it in. She criticizes your work but then writes her directions and recommendations the same way that you wrote your paper. Save yourself some time and aggravation and take somebody else
She was an amazing professor. Once one of my assignments showed that it was not submitted so I sent her a screenshot and she quickly changed my grade! She is very fair and cares about her students. She also has extra credit opportunities towards to the end of the semester.
I thought that Professor Sands was decent because she graded most of my assignments fairly, but she is tougher on major essays. I liked her but I would not recommend taking her class over the summer. There was a lot of homework and you have one week to finish six to eight assignments.
It is easy to rate a Professor with a bad review by how hard their class is, but I will not be doing that. Professor Sands is one of the hardest graders in english out there, even though her instructions are unclear at best and written with slang. Political wacko would be one of her better traits, she is overall a mean spirit. Take someone else.
She was an easy grader on every general assignment. But when it came to papers, she gave a very basic rubric that didnt state what she wanted and would grade us so hard. The highest essay score I got was an 85 and was the highest in the class. Fun topics, but she is a horrible grader.
Professor Sands is a great English Professor, I had her night class. I would want to take her class again but during the day. I could not concentrate that well at night so i felt a bit disconnected with the class. However she is always available to help.
I had Professor Sands for my ENC1101 class. The class was very well organized and easy to understand when and what assignments needed to be completed. I really like the topics she used to teach us. We did have about 5 papers overall to write and each one got a bit longer however, it was not anything too bad.
Professor Sands would help if you reached out. She never explained assignments clearly, which made writing the essays hard. The essay topics were extremely boring, I've never had such a hard time writing a paper. If you aren't naturally good at basically writing the same thing three times without it sounding that way, find a different professor!!
Professor Sands was fair. It felt like a lot of work for me but I also work a full time job and sometimes a part time job along with 4 kids. I caught Covid and also had an emergency surgery in the middle of this course so she waived my late penalties upon submitting proper documentation. Very thankful for that!
ted talks made up the majority of the class.
Anything that disagrees with her worldview will be marked down.
It's an easy course with many discussions but the professor is annoying and grades HORRIBLY. Grades essays low and nitpicks EVERYTHING. Essays are more than half of the grade. Topics are bland, too simple, and almost the same. She makes it hard to write an interesting essay and grades you off what she wants to see, even though she doesn't teach it.
Hard grader but a really good teacher!!!! She ingages with her students which none of my teacher really do. I personally like her themes for the class, for college students I enjoyed having topics that challanged my thinking and mindset. Even though I try my best I'm sitting right at a B, but I do feel like I am learning how to actually write.
She was very rude/dismissive of my classmates and I. She told us we didn't give enough personal details/trauma about our life on a paper she assigned then proceeded to read parts aloud. TONS of online homework and it gets repetitive fast. Overall class material itself isn't super hard just a lot of busy work it feels like. Also rude professor
AMAZING PROFESSOR.
