She puts a lot of effort into her teaching and notes.
She was the sweetest prof I ever could have imagined and SUPER approachable. Although I'm not much of a chemist I almost stayed with chem to have her again!! And cmon! Maybe not bootylicious but so adorable!
The cuttest prof you can imagine. She is so adorable. Very smart, friendly and helpful. Good class and didn't look for tricking the students.
Absolute best chem prof ever; she's the reason I may pursue a career in chemistry.

Great prof! The best prof in the first year.
Maggie Austen is really awesome. Her lectures are clear, and she is always willing to help students with anything (As long as her door is open). She regularly comes into thode basement before tests to answer any last minute questions. Clearly cares about her students.
Her lecture notes are awesome and she's very enthusiastic. Tries to help students the best she can e.g. in Thode basement before tests. Very approachable. Quirky in a funny way; lectures are pretty good
she does'nt know how to make tests and exams.I f she teaches covalent bonding in class, then in exam or test she will ask about ionic bonding not covalent bonding.Unlucky to had that teacher.
She's a great prof and I personally chose to go to her lectures instead of the ones to which I was assigned. She does go through her slides quick at times but will always stop to answer questions. She's always there to help students in her office but mind you, she gives very challenging questions on tests and exam.
She's an alright teacher, but nothing too fabulous. She runs through her lectures and talks about a lot of unnecessary things. She wants to help but sometime isn't able to. With a little more experience, I think she will be a much better prof.
Maggie totally changed my outlook on chemistry. I absolutely hated the subject in highschool, and when I can to her class I began to love it. It has alot to do with her personality and her great speed for lectures. I suppose a lot of people didn't like it, but this way one wouldn't fall asleep. I think her tests were really fair and clear. gives out a lot of work. she's nice but kind of quiet... pay attention at lecture.. she sneaks in assignments... i learned the hard way! lol. very boring lectures tho because shes shy and quiet. good attempt at trying to get students involved though
ok what can i say jeeze...she only talks to the first few rows of ppl..she writes on the board with some light chalk so u barely see what shes drawing..she doesnt use a mike so if ur at the back u cant hear her..she juss cant teach if her life depended on it

Brand new prof to york..she really tries hard to keep the class involved..if she spoke a little louder and wrote with darker chalk it would be great..she really helps students thru lecture notes on web CT, test reviews and assignment...her tests and assignments are fair..good overall but really needs to learn how to control the class..

Total ****. Doesn't understand how grading is mean to be done. Can't teach to anyone who's not sitting in the first 3 rows.
Great prof. Organized, helpful, fun - the buffer game was cute, never would've thought you could make a game out of buffers :) Marking is more than fair and the course is mostly about understanding rather than regurgitating the material.

She is truly genuine when it comes to wanting to help students and will devote extra time to doing so. Knows her material well, and is fair in all areas. An altogether sweet woman with a good disposition and a lot of patience.
She is a fair teacher. Her tests were good and the exam was also okay. It's true that she doesn't really look at the top rows though... but overall a good prof!
I think she is really boring and super unclear prof. She knows her stuff, just doesn't know how to teach it, she jumps to every topic which ends up beeing a mess. If you try your hardest to pay attention she losses it in 15 minuts regardless you are trying your best. BUT if you read a book and do all the problems she gives, you'll find tests easy.
Wasn't too bad overall. I felt that she had a few issues with class control because there was always this background chatter. Ended up just reading lecture notes (she has GOOD notes!) and passing tests on that. I couldn't pay attention in the class, but not everyone had my problem. Took a while to give back remarked tests.
explains pretty well, but EXTREMELY boring. ended up not showing up for 80% of lectures and just reading the book
She is willing to help. However, the lectures are boring. She is incapable of writing normal tests. She even says so herself. Finishing 1 out of the 3 pages - you should be ok. If you do more youre brilliant and FAST!
We had the strike this year, so it made it harder on her, but she admitted all of her mistakes (yes, unable to write proper tests - they're all 4x longer than should be) and curved up and gave extra marks etc. At least she admits when wrong and doesn't get all defensive! JUST REMEMBER: THIS COURSE WILL EAT UP ALL OF YOUR TIME. USE YOUR TEXTBOOK!
i dont know why shes teaching 2080 she not clear on what she teachers and wastes the class time by doing stupid group interactions and dosent get through the material for that day. What you want you seriously want to talk to her she always smiles and laughs like she dosen't care. Hope she never teaches another chem EVER!
don't understand anything. fun and cute teacher but not clear on her lectures. she basically whizzs by everything without explaining them

Some of her teaching strategies would be better saved for a kindergarten class. I had no interest in attending her lectures. Although, she does offer a lot of extra help and office hours.
really, really, really nice prof. she doesn't even yell at her students when they constantly chatter and make noises during her lectures. her tests are pretty simple and shes so cute and happy all the time.
Sweet but disorganized. Hasn't given back some of the assignments that were due in October so trying to improve in her class is a pain. No one knows where they stand in the course. Totally lazy about lecture notes, just copies and pastes from Wikipedia. The TA plays on his computer at every tutorial and doesn't like to answer questions.
Lame course. Alex is the worst TA EVER did nothing expected students to run tutorials. Austen had no idea what was going on changed course outline like 5 times never gave back work.
Why is she teaching, she is with out a doubt the worst Professor in the history of professors. She mumbles on and on, everyone talks in her class, and the list goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and take this course with Rene. Only at York would a professor like this be on hired faculty.
Her quizzes were fair. The best bet for a high grade is to do textbook work and all assigned questions. I never attended class and learned out of the textbook and found her quizzes easy to fair.
It's very rare to come across such a dedicated, keen, organized, kind, well intended educator. She takes teaching to heart, and always goes out of her way to help her students. She is even willing to stay after class, for sometimes hours, clearing doubts...none of my other Profs would do that.
SHE IS SO PATIENT! No intentions of tricking her students. Very straight forward. Genuinely wants her students to succeed in the course and will help in any way to get them there.
She gives the most useful exam reviews...very helpful in preparing for exams and tests.

I never complain but this prof has some serious problems. She sucks @ teaching.. It took her 5 hours to teach 3 chapters (#6,7,8) and the test was NOTHING compared to the tests from other sections ! Prof Hastie, Pietro, Hempstead are all WAY better than her! STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!!!!!

In the first tests (Gases) I got 90% with Dr. Hastie and got 65% with her. This prof is absolutely the worst. Her tests are EXTREMELY HARD unlike what other students said. She teaches SO FAST and her tests are nothing compared to other profs. Take it with Hastie/Pietro/Hempstead or whoever but don't take it with her! DON'T EXPECT A HIGH MARK !!!!!!
where to start, never helpful because only time she will talk is after class when10-15 other students attempt to get a word with her. YOU CAN TRY VOICEMAILS< EMAILS< OFFICE VISITS w/E, she wont be there. she has the worst test, make no sense at all. HALF THE THINS SHE SAID IN CLASS WERE A BLURRR BECAUSE SHE CAN NOT TEACH FOR SH*T. She suck... use wiki as a guideline, no text book or wt so ever. dont have a single idea of wth she is talking abt in class. make everything look hard and tone of work.
Being that it was her first time teaching this class (Summer 2010), I think it's a bit more difficult for the students who have no chemistry background what so ever. As well she asked the class about our majors (majority being non-science majors). With this known, the material was still confusing and frustrating at times.
professor Austen was SUPER nice. took 'molecules and the mind' with her in '08. gotta admit the material may be a bit tough for students who aren't science / chem majors, but all in all it wasn't extremely difficult. like someone previously said, prof. austen is the MOST patient and definitely approachable / friendly / helpful prof EVER!
Prof Maggie is the best! Gives extra help and clear explanations. Top Prof!
