Great teacher. Enthusiastic about the subject. Easy class.
Hard class; intrsuctor is inclear during lecture.
tests are hard, but teacher is pretty cool. she wants you to do well, but doesnt make the tests very easy.
Difficult. She's impatient when we don't understand something, goes waaay to fast and doesn't allow too many question to be asked. Her exams are very difficult, her lecures are confusing at times. Must read the entire chapters. She does provide study guides. She is friendly though
She sounds very condesending to her students. She makes the impression that she wants to help; but her study guides really don't cover what is on the test, so make sure you really read the chapters.
Her tests are not hard...just make sure you read the chapters, and study her lectures. Don't depend on the study guide only, because it's not very helpful, there is much more to the tests than just what's on her study guide. Do the extra credit, it's exact in the study guide, & it helps!!!
She's a major B word!I don't think she likes to students. Oh well have fun taking her.
Good lectures, hard tests, all business. Interesting if you really study. Have to read the book.
Not helpful at all. Doesnt care about her students, very unclear. Gets frustrated when students ask questions.
Do not take this class if you do not plan to study...A LOT. 3 tests, no final. must read the book as well as attend lectures to get a good grade. gets very frustrated when students are disrespectful.
Very passionate about the subject and knowledgeable. You must read the book to do well. She helped me learn to study.
She's awesome! Really smart, really wants you to learn. Expects students to be respectful and STUDY.
This class is challenging. You must read the book, take notes, study, etc. Many of the lectures were interesting and informative, but the Prof. makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. No discussion- all lecture. Still, a good class.
*the good things:three non cummulatve exams, no final, not too hard. *the bad things: desperate when ask too many qsts, might give you an exam that was scheduled even if the fires have passed, if she didn't send you an e-mail, and if she didn't covered what she supposed to, also tries to be nice, but sometimes she can't.
If you never like to come to class and just take an exam this is the class for you. There are 3 noncumulative exams which is nice but everything else is horrible. The exams are 100% from the book. She canceled MANY classes and still held the class responsible for all the information, even durring the wildfires.
Professor tries hard to be fair and sometimes students take advantage. The class is interesting. I had to attend class AND read the book but the lectures were pretty good.
prof friend cares about her students and will expain things thoroughly when there is questions. she went above and beyond to remedy the test situation after the wild fires
This class is somewhat challenging, but its the way a college course should be. you have to show up, read your book and study to get a good grade. the prof is not always clear which is her only downfall and the tests are really hard. but overall its a very rewarding class!
very nice lady. gives opportunites for extra credit. but class is kind of boring. exams are tough and u need to read book to get A. i didnt read and i got a B. overall, she's ok
You have to read the book to pass this class. The tests are really hard, even if you go to all lectures and read all the chapters. You can 15 points of e/c by writing 3 short, easy essays. DO THEM!
Truly a challenging class but well worth it! I learned more in this class than in my other classes combined. You have to read the book and really think hard about the concepts. Flash cards and memorizing definitions won't help. Study hard and participate and she'll help you move to the next level of performance in your classes.
difficult class. does not put up lecture slides online, so you need to come to class. no study guide provided, so lots of studying! and her exams are hard! i had to reallllly study! do extra credit assignments, really helps grade!
Tests are difficult but not impossible. Has study guide available at bookstore. Gives helpful exercises in class and on blackboard. Great lecturer!
Prof is old school. Must read book, STUDY, and go to class for notes. Still worth it in the end. She wants students to do well. Extra credit helps.
Tests are ridiculously hard and the professor is NOT friendly whatsoever. Do not recommend this class
She's not as bad as I thought she was going to be. Her tests are NOT ridiculously hard to those who claim they are. I went into this class worrying more about her tests and less about her lectures; truth be told her lectures are a bit unclear, her tests aren't too bad. Read the book, study notes, buy the study guide, you'll get at least a B.
Agreed. Her tests are reasonable. People who aren't happy probably didn't study. If you are used to getting As you'll probably get one here. If you often get Ds or Fs you'll probably get one here. Bottom line: it is not an easy A but it is doable.
Challenging class but with a professor who cares about her students and the topic. Must attend class and read the text. Take this class if you want to challenge yourself. If you want an easy A this is not the class for you.
Interesting discussions. Enough breadth to be useful even if Developmental is not your primary area of interest. Good class. Helpful professor.
let me just say I got a B in the class (normally an A/B student) and I worked my butt off for it. She is a no BS kind of professor, but unfortunately gives unclear lectures and expects you to have a deeper understanding of the topics that were unclear to begin with. test questions are VERY unclear.PLEASE take another teacher. u will thank me later.
This class is challenging but in a good way. Reading the textbook before lectures helped me stay on track. Dr. Friend is good about stopping during lecture for clarifications and she was open to questions.
Just had my first exam in this class. Don't know what's up with the "normally A/B student" below. The thing about Friend is that she doesn't just hand you the answers. She wants you to get involved in learning so that it means more later. Her enthusiasm really helps!
She's great!
She is ALWAYS late. It's frustrating to have a professor who rarely comes to class on time and takes about 10 minutes to set up when all her students are on time and waiting to start class. Good professor, lectures somewhat unclear so the book helps.
AMAZING. Dr Friend is an absolutly wonderful professor and person as a whole. I have never met a professor who so genuinely cares about her students! She wants you to do well, understand the material and hopefully find it as facinating as she does. She is willing to help w you with anything even if it is not related to the course. Take her!
Good professor. She shows a real interest in students and their success. Reading the book and attending lectures is essential. She's helpful but doesn't take any BS.
This class is a fairly easy B, hard A. The thing is you just need to learn how to study for her tests which isn't always easy to figure out. My advice, study the discussion boards and focus on that when you read the book. Definitely need to read the book!
Take this class before grad school or other professional development. Attendance, Critical thinking, and reading the text are essential. You have to give this class your best but, if you do, you won't regret it. Material is interesting and professor i.s very enthusiastic and helpful
Great professor--challenging class! Attend class, complete ALL assignments, read the book, and you'll be fine.
3 exams plus open book discussions (which count as an exam). The discussions are time consuming but help a lot. I have a C on exams but will get a B with the discussion points. Must read the book.
Fair grader. NOT easy. You have to work for your grade. You have to read the book. You have discussion board questions. Do not miss one. You have to go to lecture to get the notes. She knows what she is talking about. Can get boring. Buy the study guide, it helps a lot. 3 Exams and 10 blackboard discussion board questions. Good Luck!
Challenging class with a very knowledgeable prof. Must attend class, do all assignments, and read text to do well. Friend made the material interesting and relevant even though the class was large (too large IMO).
Best grad seminar at SDSU!
Lots of work--weekly quizzes and essays plus exams. Lots of extra credit too. Friend is pretty "friendly" and helpful and the class is interesting.
I loved this class. It was pretty tough, but the work really pays off. There are weekly discussion boards that take some time, but the class itself is interesting. She is a really good teacher and she is very helpful with examples when you ask questions. Go to class, do the discussion boards, read the chapters and the class should be rewarding.
There were papers to write on movies we had watched in class relating to the class. This was a great idea. The not so good aspect is that they were due the next day. That allowed no in depth analysis and was next to impossible for people who have full time jobs as well as a full load at school. I felt it was unnecessary and didnt learn a ton...
Great class! It was always interesting and there were lots of ways to earn credit. My favorite were the essays on each period of development that were based on in-class films. This really made the material very personal and relevant.
This is a tough course with a great teacher. There are weekly assignments but they help you get a handle on the material. Must read the text and attendance is important because the lectures are what make the content interesting.
Class contains all the lecture material and nothing is posted online, however, all the material is in the book (which wasn't compatible with my mac online), which screwed me over. You def need to study for the tests but she is a great professor! 4 movie reviews which are easy (CR or NC). I really liked the class-ish.
She's a really good teacher and if she does't know the answer to a question she will research it. 3 tests that are based on the book, 4 films with papers due the next day (credit or no credit) and extra credit quizzes every week. It was the easiest class I took last semester.
Really unfair that you have to pay to be able to have access to extra credit/study guides. A professor should make sure each student has a means to these things.
Strange comment. I am taking this class as well and paid $56 for an online text + extra credit quizzes/study guide. Most of my college texts have been around $100 so this seemed like a great deal to me. Also like the professor's style...friendly, respectful, and the class is organized in an interesting way with different ways to earn credit (exa
Great class! A mix of lecture, film, and extra credit opportunities make this class relevant and interesting. 3 exams with lots of practice on questions from the weekly quizzes.
Dr. Friend is the kind of professor that I hope to be someday. Very interesting class. I attended every single class! You have to read the book and attending class is really important as are the essay assignments but they're actually fund to do!
Dr. Friend is a great professor. Knows so much about the subject and is very passionate about it. The readings are very important and a lot of test questions come from them. She also offers extra credit once a week, you have to buy it in the beginning of the semester for around $50, but the points you accumulate make a HUGE difference!
Professor is funny, passionate, and puts together interesting lectures. Reading and attendance are a must. Extra credit every week, 4 essays spread through the semester, and 3 exams. Very fair. It's not hard to do well in this class.
Dr. Friend is a good teacher. I took PSY230 from her. Most of the exam questions come from the weekly online extra credit chapt quizzes which need to purchased new from the bookstore (lame!). Attend all film days and read the chapters FULLY. Tests are multiple choice and are difficult. Every point counts, since little to no curve in class.
Great graduate course--one of the best in my time at SDSU. The course is not just for developmental students. Dr. Friend has organized it to make it relevant across disciplines in psychology. She re-ignited my interest in research!
All you need to do is purchase the online textbook because that is where all of the answers to exams are. Was unaware of this until halfway into the semester, which sucked. It IS unfair that you have to pay to get a good grade, as she doesn't make the textbook available on reserves/offer other alternatives.
Textbook and attendance required. Professor was upbeat and made it interesting. I loved this class! Three things. Do the extra credit. Don't miss the videos. Turn your essays in on time.
Great class! I learned a lot. The discussions were interesting and she allowed us to range a little to see how the material applied to different issues. Her comments on assignments were thorough and very helpful. Highly recommend.
If you read and know the book you don't need to go to class. Can get an A without attending
3 tests, 3 (two-page) papers, weekly online homework, and lots of extra credit. Only need to attend class on film days to write the 3 essays. DO NOT buy a hard copy of the book, only need the access code.
Professor says attendance is mandatory although you could probably get by without it except on film and exam days. I attended every lecture because they were interesting and added context to the reading. The class was long but it didn't feel that way because of the mix of lecture, discussion, and other activities. Overall great class!
My favorite class (and professor) this semester! The class is super broad ("womb to tomb" according to Friend) and was also broadly relevant to my life. Good lectures, very open-minded professor. Get your work in on time, read the book, and, if you really want to get the most out of the class, go to lecture. I'm glad I did.
Very knowledgeable, passionate, and often funny professor. Class could be long if taught by someone else but Friend breaks it up with discussion, interesting video, and occasional activities. 3 exams, most questions come from the book, homework, and plenty of extra credit.
A friendly and sassy lady. Lectures are complementary to the text. She definitely cares about her students and one can tell. (She actually gave us popcorn for movie days.) Her exams are difficult, but she does offer extra credit every week (that you definitely need to take advantage off each time, trust me).
She is a nice professor, but she is pretty monotone and can be boring. There are 3 multiple choice exams which are pretty hard. There are online assignments every week with an optional practice test that gives you extra credit points. There are 3 videos and you write a 2 page paper for each one. The assignments and extra credit helped me get a B.
I took this class last year and in that time can honestly say it has been one of my best classes. Professor manages to spark interesting discussion even in large lecture and responded thoughtfully and with good humor to our comments. 3 exams plus 1 optional final (difficult), extra credit, and 3 short writing assignments with extensive feedback.
I genuinely do not understand how Dr. Friend(enemy) has received such good reviews thus far. She is among my least favorite profs @ sdsu thus far. She managed to make an interesting toping painfully boring, while creating tests that ask the most minuscule details in unclear Q's. If you take this class your best bet is MEMORIZING the book.
.Do ALL of the extra credit! She gives so much it saves your grade so hard. Her tests were pretty hard so study for it. She definitely cares about you and wants you to succeed. This class is just tough in general though. 3 tests with an optional 4th one to drop the lowest grade.
I enjoyed this class. The movies she showed held my attention and I enjoyed writing the papers. Do all the extra credit quizzes, the ques will appear on the test. I made flash cards for this class to drill the info in. Show up, take notes, read, review-Review is key! I took this class as a repeat(diff prof), went from a D to an A!
DO all extra credit & easy weekly hw! Tests are pretty tough so you're gonna need the extra points to help your grade. 1 point extra credit for every attendance. 11 weeks. 11 points. Would recommend reading since she doesn't really go over all the material in class. 3 papers, 2 pgs long on-class films. You need to answer specific questions.
This was a good class. Friend was responsive to students. Answered emails promptly and is available for office hours and after class. Friendly and cares about students. Must turn assignments in on time and review the text thoroughly. Do the extra credit. It helps!
This was my favorite class and prof this semester. Her passion for the material is contagious. I never realized how interesting child development really is. It's true that the tests are tough but she gives practice questions all semester and there are so many ways to get points that it's not hard to do well.
Let me add to the praise for Professor Friend! She is a very dynamic lecturer and connects with the class in a way that lets you know you're valued. Lectures are long but are nicely broken up with film, video, activities, and Q&As. Good sense of humor and fair. 3 tests + optional final (tough--read, read, read), 3 essays, homework, and plenty of EC
Not a good professor, her lectures are pretty much her just saying what's in the textbook. No elaboration, does not make it relatable. Exams are 80 questions, only way to get an A is to memorize the text because she asks VERY specific/detailed questions. No need to go to class since she doesn't give new info. but she does give EC for attendance.
I loved this class! The professor was very helpful and the lectures were engaging. She makes students feel important in the course and used technology (Tophat) for discussion which was always interesting. 3 exams, 3 films and essays, and weekly homework. The extra credit really helped. Do work on time and attend class to get the most out of it.
Professor was engaging and put a lot of effort into a variety of learning tools (reading, presentations, polls and discussions, films, practice quizzes) all made relevant to our lives. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Professor and TA were very approachable and reponsive to email as well.
Great class. Friend makes the content relatable and encourages participation. She is passionate about the subject and it keeps the class interesting. Three exams plus an optional cumulative final, three essays, weekly homework, and good extra credit opportunities. It helped my grade.
She really knows her field of study, but lectures almost never have information that will be on the exams. That being said, you get extra credit for attending. The exams are based solely on the text and MindTap homework due on sundays. Depending on the amount of extra credit you get, you can raise your final grade almost 10%.
You can pass without attending lectures if you are very good at memorizing. But Friend really knows her stuff and makes the material interesting and relatable. I always read before class then went to lecture. She made concepts tangible and easier to remember for exams. Plus the lectures themselves were great! Fun, engaging, class. Would take again.
Read before class (this helps with the weekly hw), then go to lecture to get professor's take. She uses lots of resources to help apply and explain the material that were helpful to me. Do all assignments on time and you should be good. There is enough extra credit to boost you a letter grade if you use it wisely. 3 exams plus 1 optional cumulative
Passionate, knowledgeable, and cares about students. Assignments are interesting and help you get the most out of the class. Interesting lecture/discussion, 3 exams plus one optional, 3 essays, weekly hw. Take this class if you can. Dr. Friend is a pro!
She obviously knows her stuff, but lectures are not necessary, many people only went for the extra credit. Just READ and re read the textbook, cause the lecture material only covers part of it. Optional final, will replace lowest midterm EVEN if you do worse on it. Did not give + or - on final grade.
Great class. I went in not expecting much since I'm not a psych major but the class was so interesting that I'm reconsidering. There are different ways to earn credit which helped me since I'm not a strong test-taker. The lectures helped with examples and class discussion. Also, Dr. Friend's passion made them fun and interesting.
Great, challenging class. Dr. Friend used the challenging content to mentor us in our analytic, writing, and presentation skills. This class gave us good practice in graduate-level skills in a supportive class environment.
go to class!! it's optional but the extra credit adds up so fast it's worth it! there's weekly reading/hw and it's kind of a lot but this class overall was pretty interesting and it wasn't hard at all. as long as you do the weekly reading and assignments and go to class for extra credit you should get an A. i did that and didn't study and got an A
Her class is chill, but make sure you study extra for the exams because the exams feel like right hooks from Mohammad Ali and it will really put you down if you are doing all the work. So yeah go to class, but read the book as often as possible.
Thank you Prof. Friend for a wonderful semester. I learned things that will def help me in my major and my other classes. Attending class helped me but was not mandatory. Reading every week. 3 exams, 3 essays, with extra credit and optional final (if you don't do well on an exam).
Very passionate and knowledgeable professor. Class is very interesting. Exams were challenging. You have to read but there are other ways to get points so, in the end, it isn't hard to do well. Plus there's an optional final if you need to make up a grade.
One of my favorite professors. You have to read the book thoroughly to be ready for the test but she is accessible and makes the subject interesting. Friendly and smart. Her sense of humor puts students at ease.
She really gets on her students about doing the readings. You definitely should read because the tests have a lot of little details. You get extra credit for attendance and homework, and her lectures are funny.
She is a very knowledgeable and approachable professor. You have to read the book and turn in assignments on time. Classes are used more for discussion and making the information relatable which Dr. Friend does very well.
Excellent professor. Teaches you what you need to know and why you need to know it. Very approachable. You can tell she is there for you.
Friend is a very good professor, and she really cares for her students. She is very passionate about the subject. I highly recommend going to class and doing the homework and extra credit because they are easy points that can really influence your grade. Really enjoyed this class!
Because of this class, I know what I want to focus on in my major. I learned so much! I was challenged in this class but also had every opportunity to do well. Read the book, turn in your assignments on time, and go to class. It's a great class and Friend is a great professor! I hope I get to work with her one day.
I took Dr. Friends class a couple of semesters ago. Now Im applying to work in her lab. She is a passionate teacher. You can tell she knows and loves the subject. It is not hard to do well in this class if you turn assignments in on time and do the extra credit. This was a kind of something for everybody class which I liked.
She is a good person. Very nice, but I find her lectures to be lengthy and kind of boring. I don't feel engaged in the class especially when it started at 4pm and got out at 6:30pm. Participation matters and she keeps track of attendance. Best bet is to go to class otherwise don't take her.
This was my favorite class last semester. Not because it was easy but because there was so much useful information taught by a prof that really cares about students. Her passion and dedication are inspirational. Three essays, three exams, weekly homework. Go to class, pay attention to deadlines and youll do fine. Grading is very fair.
Professor Friend is, in my opinion, the most knowledgeable person on her field at SDSU. She is passionate about child development, which makes her classes really interesting! She encourages students participation. HW essay questions challenge students to think critically and to engage in learning. Took her twice and would take her again if I could.
It is tough to keep a room full of students engaged for 3 hours but she actually did pretty well at keeping people participating. Attendance is extra credit as well as weekly practice quizzes. The class uses an online textbook that requires you to do weekly mastery training that cannot be done in one day due to the website making you take breaks.
Dr friend is a good professor who is passionate about infant and child psychology. Your grade is based on 9 payback hw and 3 exams. Take advantage of the 2 point extra credits every week as it can save you. The test the usual but she gives no study guides you have to study the notes book and payback questions. Highly recommend
Even though class moved to online due to COVID-19, Dr. Friend cared about all of her students and had a positive attitude the whole time. It's honestly a great class and isn't difficult. The extra credit from the packback questions really helps. She is the nicest and most caring professor ever! Don't even think about it, just take her class!
Tests were surprisingly very difficult. I attended lectures and read and never scored above a B+ on any of them. Overall nice person, but the course was no very memorable for me.
Dr Friend is a solid choice if youre truly interested in child development. You have to read the entire chapter of the text before lecture and have intense discussion boards due weekly but you definitely learn and are prepared to succeed on tests.
Lectures are extremely unhelpful considering it is required to read the entire chapter in order to do the homework the week before. Lectures were super long and overall repetitive. Exams were the most difficult part. Test answers can be really confusing. BUT she does offer extra credit every week bc she knows her exams are hard. Oh and weekly hw!!!
This class genuinely sucks. I took it thinking it would be a normal, semi easy online GE but it is so boring. She's uncooperative & assigns the weirdest essays that seem to have nothing to do with the class. I feel like it is more of a sociology or political class than psychology. She's definitely enthusiastic but that's about the only good thing.
Professor Friend has made this class difficult and she is not understanding or compassionate whatsoever when you have personal issues that have made you struggle in the class. Tests make up the entire grade and are super hard. Lectures are extremely long, repetitive, and the content is not important for tests. Would not take again.
Friend is knowledgeable and enthusiastic to teach but this class is no walk in the park. Friend offers little additional info besides what Is in the text during lectures and can lack sympathy at times. Tests are difficult, you must memorize the text to succeed. Lots of extra credit which was helpful. This was a tough class but the work pays off.
Professor Friend is a pretty mediocre instructor in an online setting. 3 hour class sessions every week (with the exception of a few optional) that consist of repetitive and boring lectures. Her lectures do not help with exams and exams are taken synchronously on zoom. The homework online is very easy and small extra credit is offered every week.
Dr. Friend is an amazing instructor. She really cares for her students and understands your situation if you just talk to her. There is a lot of extra credit that can be done to boost your grade! Overall amazing professor and I am looking forward to taking another class with her as the instructor.
Prof. Friend is a caring person who wants you to succeed. Homework is not extremely time-consuming, but you have to keep up with the readings to stay on track. Lectures are recorded, which is helpful when studying for exams. Make sure to do the extra credit, she is basically giving you easy points.
I enjoyed taking Professor Friends class. She is very passionate about what she is teaching and her lectures are very interesting. Every week there is a new chapter reading along with a homework assignment. As long as you take notes from the readings and the lectures, you should be fine. Exams are based on both the textbook and her lectures.
Dr. Friend is a very caring professor. The homework is not a lot, it is one weekly assignment and you have multiple days to complete it. Three essays, and three exams in the semester. Attendance is not mandatory, since slides are posted. Will definitely be an interesting class if you like learning about human development.
Professor Friend deserves a better rating. Her lectures were very moving and she is very passionate and bookish in the subject she talks about. Very easy to talk to. She has some tech issues, but she records her lectures and be sure to do your work on Cengage on two separate days.
Professor Friend was amazing and tried her best to engage with the class of like 120 people. This course was extremely lecture heavy though she records and posts them. I did fairly well in the class, however, the essays I found myself struggling with. Expect to put in work, pay attention to the lectures, and at the very least read the textbook.
She has good lectures but the tests and essays are hard to make up for. Tests cover the most specific piece of info from textbook and some aren't in ANY material. She's really tough on essays, and is very vague in directions. Small weekly assignments but they cant save you from mid grade on test or essays. Might've just been the TA grading
Friend makes it difficult to succeed because essay requirements are random and vaguely explained. The grade relies on 3 essays and 4 tests, so failing these means failing the class. Instead of covering test content in lectures, she focuses on her views on cultural diversity, ignoring developmental psychology entirely.
Professor Friend doesn't make this already hard class easier in the slightest. She is passive aggressive or outright rude to students who are brave enough to ask questions. The assignments she gives are nearly impossible to get an A, and the comments she gives (if any) are basically useless. She is genuinely not a good teacher or mentor, beware.
Professor Friend is engaging and passionate about the subject. The coursework can be challenging, but she offers helpful resources like recorded lectures and extra credit. I found Unstuckstudy a valuable study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a rewarding class with an amazing instructor.
Honestly, the content of this course is extremely easy- it's the teaching that's terrible. Professor Friend is outright rude and passive-aggressive to students and seems to be defensive whenever she is asked questions. The grading on the essays is ridiculous! They are 1-2 pages, and she grades super harshly. Just avoid her.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take this professor. One of the rudest people I have ever met and genuinely made my semester miserable. She grades the essays so incredibly hard and will dock off points for everything. Avoid at all costs
Professor was rude. Online assignments were confusing and relatively pointless to understand class material. Avoid if possible.
Professor Friend is supportive and always available via office hours or email. The course on child development is heavy yet engaging, and she uses Packback to help students prepare for exams. Group work is encouraged when it comes to studying, and she's dedicated to helping students with any doubts or questions. Highly recommend this course.
Dr. Friend cares for your success and emphasizes your learning. Discussion boards, readings, and lectures help you learn the content. Packback can be tricky but learning it helps. She really does want you to succeed and will clarify, explain, or help you however she can. As long as you keep up with them you'll learn the content and get a good grade
Good class, not a lot of work and only three exams all semester and three essays. Very hard grader and picky about how you write but overall decent assignments and gives opportunities to revise it. Lots of extra credit but lectures are boring.
