so dry, just the worst.
One of the two most influential teachers Ive had at Emily Carr.
Instructor was amazing. Honest, very knowledgeable, and good at getting the class to talk.
This class totally changed how I think about the world. I was not interested before, but now want to study more about visual culture and art history. Great teacher.
Far from dry! She asked the right questions and steered us in the right direction without telling us what to think and to form our own opinions. She is astonishingly knowledgeable about art theory and never fails to turn me on to a new contemporary artist every class. She is also extremely helpful with assignments so there is no guess work.
Great prof. Really cares about students. Passionate and super smart.
Such an intelligent woman. Super helpful, passionate and insightful. Asks questions, doesn't hide her personal biases, but makes room for alternative points of view and facilitates dialogue. Entertains even the most ludicrous sounding questions and topics, always taking it as an opportunity to probe, challenge and elucidate.
not much helpful. unfair grading.
You are going have to be a PHD to get a good mark in this class. If you are just an average student and enrolled in this class, then the future is bleak.
If you really want to learn you have the best teacher.
The hardest class I've ever taken. Also the most rewarding. Great teacher, amazing person who cares.
changed my life and my work. best class. best instructor at ecuad.
Fantastic prof. One of the best at Emily Carr. I love how thoughtfully but clearly she approaches difficult topics. Talks about feminism and cultural appropriation in a way that makes you want to learn more and more. Magnolia is an inspiration.
Magnolia is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Her course work can be challenging but rewarding. I love her lectures: so thoughtful and captivating. I will be taking another class with her again.
Not helpful, and condescending. The course seemed to come second to her personal life.
Excellent class. Always entertaining, funny, and mindwarping. If you mistake kindness for condescension then that's too bad. Magnolia is the best prof I've had and an inspiring person. I will definitely be taking classes with her in the future.
Magnolia has changed the way I look at education and the world. Probably the most inspiring and conscientious teachers at ECUAD. Yes, Pauker has her biases-and I really respect that she is one of the few teacher to clearly position herself within a feminist/decolonial dialogue and push her students to critically challenge heteronormative culture.
Magnolia is hands-down the best teacher I have ever had. She is rigorous, thoughtful, self-reflexive, humble and earnest in her devotion and commitment to education. She goes above and beyond to help students if they are willing to seek her out and put in the extra effort as well. She is a real game changer. Best teacher at Emily Carr for sure.
not helpful. bad explanation.
Excellent prof. Funny and extremely smart. Helpful in and out of class. Met many times outside of office hours. Gave us a good foundation in cultural studies and made everything relevant to today. Asked for our opinions and ideas and responded by bringing more information for us to think about. Will absolutely be taking more classes with Magnolia.
Very funny, self-depricating, makes abstract theory mean something today, and makes sense of very hard material with sense of humor and kindness. best prof i've had
She knows her stuff and will give you great feedback. Terrible slideshows, unreadable and unbearably unrealistic workloads assigned. I have avoided taking her classes again. Too bad because she has the ability to be very helpful and teaches interesting subjects.
Awesome. So smart and kind. Expects that you can think critically and will teach you how to read just about anything if you want to learn. Also funny and entertaining. The slideshow are great and simplify everything, not to mention informative and interesting.
She's one of the best teachers I've had my whole life. I've never learned so much about myself/ my place in the world in any other class.
AVOID at all cost. Course material are complicated and there is not enough time alloted for the level of complexity and expectations. Expect to write 1000+ word essays twice a week and read complex texts with no sufficient guidance or actual teaching.
Don't know what the last commentator was on. Excellent prof. Difficult material but important and good explanation. Two exams, take-home and open book and one 1500 word paper. Do your work, pass the course. Ask questions she'll answer. Also hilarious sense of humor.
Magnolia is an incredible teacher, a very caring and understanding person and REALLY knows about what she's teaching. On top of that, she CARES about what she's teaching, which is a lot more than what I can say about a lot of other teachers at ECUAD. I never felt mutual-respect from any other prof like I did from Magnolia. TAKE HER CLASSES!
lost my interest in socs , very tedious.
Not great at all. Marking is very strict, questions take forever to get answered, vague explanations, contradicts herself, disorganized, inconsiderate... The course itself is rigorous and tiresome. Writing is nonstop and very little time provided in relation to the amount of work expected.
This class is challenging , but you'll learn as much as you're willing to give. Magnolia gave feedback to every single assignment quickly and more thoroughly than any other prof I've had. Too bad so many students ignored her helpful advice and didn't seem to care about taking it. Lectures were brilliant too. Smart, funny, and generous.
This is what I found on one of her courses Pros - If you apply yourself you can learn a lot - Generally just a nice person - Overall the course was comprehensive Cons - She doesn't do a lot of teaching, and hands out too much reading. - No leniency, very strict grading - Very biased lectures and coursework - Terrible at getting back to you!
Very rewarding class. So difficult at first, but finally someone who respects our intelligence. Gives in-depth feedback on every assignment. Makes it possible for me to really improve. Would like to take a course in person. Really a great product.
Lots of work that actually helps you learn to be more critical and a better writer. Brilliant lectures and very in-depth feedback to assignments. Best are the posts she writes in response to weekly work. Read them. This is a great class that everyone should have to take.
Excellent professor. The best. Brilliant lectures and lots of help. My writing is so much better at the end of this class and I know much more about cultural theory and critique.
I love her. Smart, kind, really helpful. Clearly thought about how to design an online course. Lectures make you really think and help understand the readings.
This is an online class that I had to take. I wasnt looking forward to it, but actually enjoyed it. And I got to be a better writer, so much better. Magnolia read and gave feedback for every single post we made. Shes very dedicated and I feel lucky to have learned from her. Also great lectures that made esoteric ideas relatable.
Wonderful person. So kind and dedicated. Also patient and gives the best feedback I've ever received. I can't imagine how much time she actually spends reading and responding to our posts. I didn't think I could learn so much in an online class. Really amazing.
Great class. Very professional. Learned a lot about cultural theory and academic writing.
I regret taking her class, too much assignments! I didnt really absorb the class materials because of the ridiculous amount of assignments! Im just rushing and mashing up concepts in my writings. She shows no caring to students who struggle to work and study many courses at the same time. Too much time spent on one class and lost the balance!!
-informative course content -helpful when you are struggling BUT -need to spend a big chunk of time in her online course - don't think online course will be easier, it was one of the hardest ones I've taken. min 800 words weekly for 7 weeks -marks will improve if you take in the feedback, but grading is very tough especially in the beginning
It was a challenge for me as I'm not super confident with my academic writing, but I loved Magnolia's class. She is incredibly smart and insightful, and made me want to impress her. My experience has been pretty spotty at Emily Carr in terms of the quality of instructors. I wish there were more profs like Magnolia.
Although the course is interesting, its not her lectures that make it interestingjust the readings she picks. Her online communication is subpar, and she rarely responds to emails even if they follow her strict guidelines. Since shes barely present to respond to questions, it made this course harder to understand and complete.
Every class I've taken with Magnolia Pauker has been excellent. She is generous with her time and feedback. And she is beyond brilliant. This course will make you think in new ways and leave you inspired by how Pauker thinks as well as the respect and care she shows for students.
Best academic course Ive taken at Emily Carr in 5 years. Everyone should have to take it in second year. I understand so much more than before and Im a better writer too. Magnolia has standards but she gives students lots of chances and feedback and shes kind and funny. Take this class with her!!!
The best. I learned so much. Take SOCS 201 with Magnolia!
Tough class and you have to do the work to do well, but Prof. Pauker is smart and good at explaining things, makes the complicated readings understandable and gives more feedback than any other prof I've had. I learned a lot about cultural theory and improved my writing.
Challenging class but worth every penny. She's a tough grader with high standards but you can always resubmit your works as she really appreciates progression. The extra readings she gives are super useful so don't skip those. Make sure you're having more free time than usual (Summer classes work fine) and just be prepared in general.
I appreciate her clear criteria for assignments. If you follow the minimum criteria, you will be fine. Her feedback is very helpful and she takes improvement into consideration when grading. My only warning is that a lot of the readings are very heavy and can be difficult to understand.
Not great professor, not responsible for teaching students, expecting students to work by alone without teaching anything
Magnolia is great. She says she wants to shift power relations in the classroom and then she does it. She is respectful of students, honest, and compassionate. She knows what she is talking about and is very good at helping students feel confident to express their opinions as well. No lectures, just discussions. And she responds to all questions!
Magnolia is incredibly kind, caring and understanding. She knows what shes talking about when shes teaching and she guides you in a firm but still gentle way. Ive gained so much from being in her class and am so grateful to her. 10/10 teacher who understands neurodivergent students
Really understanding with Foundation students. Always willing to clarify and answer Qs no matter how often they're repeated. Lots of tangents, sometimes takes a while to see the (always there) relevance. Don't recommend for those who simply want to do work and be done with it, you have to communicate and put at least slightly above average effort.
The course itself is hard which is expected and I understand that. But the Professor is condescending and doesn't do much aside from talking in a monotonous voice for 1 hour straight with no images nothing. Disorganised. Gives no real feedback and makes you rewrite work multiple times just to say it's bad. Would not recommend, avoid at all costs.
Prof Pauker is really organized and thorough. Every topic has lectures, slides, and tonnes of extra links and suggested readings. You need to do your work weekly, which means lots of writing and you have to follow the directions to reference readings and lectures in your writing. If you do that, you do well since you get lots of feedback.
Magnolia is a truly caring teacher. She wrote my class a note at the start of the year wishing us luck in our second year. We hadn't been in her class for a whole year, but she took the time to reach out and tell us that we mattered. This prof cares about who we are as human beings. She is as smart as she is kind. Everyone should take her class
This lady kicks butt. I was not a very good student, but she was a very good prof regardless. She works very hard to unlearn damaging concepts and she is a very kind and thoughtful person. she is a tough cookie, but she's also awesome. I cant help but have a soft spot for profs like her.
If you do you what you are asked you will do great in her class. She has reasonable expectations of everyone, and is understanding of specific situations. Just do the work, and put in the effort. If you don't do well it's because you didn't. Magnolia made me enjoy a class I never thought I would, and I'll be in her class next semester.
Magnolia is a great professor, probably the best I have had. She explained difficult readings and answered questions openly. She also made us feel comfortable and not judged for not being as smart as she is. Seriously though, she is as kind as she is smart, which is pretty rare. Take her class.
Magnolia is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are thoughtful and by the end of the term I had learned so much. Take her class. You will be inspired!
Take her class. You will learn something. She is brilliant.
At first, she can seem strict, but I can tell she is a great teacher after taking the course! Her lessons are intriguing. I took her class during the summer, so the workload is quite heavy because it shortens into one and a half months. If you have any problems, please email her. She is so sweet and helpful if you contact her.
Magnolia is terrible at responding to emails even though she claims to be open to them incase we have questions. If you ask her the simplest yes or no question she turns it into a 5 minute conversation therefore, not even answering your question. The class is boring and hard to understand. Wouldn't recommend for people with short attention spans.
The class is hard but Magnolia is a great teacher that makes things interesting and relevant. If you don't care about the class and just want to get by don't take her course. She gives a lot of feedback and responds to student messages and requests fast. If you want to learn, take a course with this awesome lady.
She is smart and helpful and she cares.
Very kind and smart lady. She will help you and she cares.
Very nice and smart professor.
Magnolia is one of the most genuinely caring professors I've encountered at Emily Carr. She also happens to be one of the most interesting and humble. Readings can be dense, but they're worth it. If you bring questions about them to class, you'll learn more from her than any other prof here. I cannot speak highly enough of her!
I would like to take another class with this professor. I have learned so so much in her class. Also she is very smart, funny and kind.
Magnolia changed my life. Back when I took her class, gender-theory came as an earth-shattering revelation. She gifted me a more authentic version of myself. I've always been painfully shy. She sought me out, encouraging me to speak up more. When I told her that would be a struggle, she allowed me to give her notes after class in-lieu of speaking.
She is great! Smart and nice and will meet with you and give your lots of help.
Love her!
Really the best teacher I've ever had. Maybe too patient with people who don't show up and participate, but she's not a pushover and unpacks really hard concepts in relatable ways. If you want a class to remember, learn about interviews with Magnolia.
Fair, kind, very smart.
I didn't know that interviews could be so interesting.
Supportive and helpful. I learned so much about art history and writing. She answers any question patiently.
I could listen to Magnolia talk all day. She is a most amazing thinker and makes hard topic understandable and safe for students to speak up too. The best!
Get ready to be inspired. Very smart and academic but relevant and not afraid to talk about things that are happening right now. Take her class!
The Best!!!
Magnolia is incredibly caring, sincere, and knowledgeable. I felt like she truly saw me as a human first and a student second. I took her class online and it was super engaging, and I enjoyed the assignments a lot because they gave plenty of creative freedom and allowed me to make a project that I genuinely love. Would recommend for sure!!!
Tough grader, uninterested in getting to know students and having 1 on 1s
Magnolia is one of a kind. Does so much emotional labor to support students. We actually learn about things that really matter and are given a chance to work on projects that matter to us too. Love this professor. So smart and caring.
Professor Pauker so far is one of the best Professor I have ever had. She is so caring and wise, and I actually can learn a lot through her classes and expand my mind. I will definitely take her class again!!! She is the best professor!!! You won't regret taking her class, highly recommended!!!
Magnolia is extremely committed and understanding in her classes. Her feedback is incredible, always detailed and helpful. She truly cares about her students' growth and creates a supportive learning environment. Without a doubt, I would take another class with her!
Magnolia is a very considerate person. She will spare her time for those who care to learn more about the class and she will offer help. She has helped me improve my skills and pushed me to explore my writing skills further giving me a chance to do things better. She always gives you a second chance and will see the efforts you put into her class.
Good teacher but I don't under Her class
Too much work, ths was the worst course ever. Never take it. Never recommand
I learnt so much. Hard topics but lectures were amazing and inspiring.
The kindest prof I've ever had, she's incredibly well read and has so much knowledge and passion for the subject, it made the class really interesting and engaging (especially for a humanities class). If you participate in class, show up on camera and communicate difficulties with projects she's always understanding and willing to help. 10/10
Reason for giving 1 point because 1 is the lowest score. A lot of homework, very difficult, and very low grade. Please try not to take her class, thank you.
The best course I've taken and the best prof at Emily Carr. There are standards and you actually learn not jus told what to think.
The assignment is too difficult and there is a lot of it. I don't recommend taking her class.
just don't
I earnestly request you all not to take her classes! The grade she gave were all very low! Don't be deceived!
This is the worst teacher I have ever seen!
Funny how all the people complaining don't mention that they had the chance to redo every assignment for this class if they wanted to do its actually hard to get a bad grade. Don't be hating on a prof who actually cares and gives everybody a chance. Lectures were great and about stuff that actually matters. If you try, there's a lot to learn
Very smart and nice professor. Cares about students and learning.
It's funny the bad reviews are people with bad grades, so take what they say w/ a grain of salt. Dr. Pauker is deeply knowledgable and respectful. Guest speakers, interesting. Participate in the forums! Assignments and rubrics were clear + ample time given for our final essay. I will take again. I really appreciated learning about decolonialism.
This was a challenging class, with difficult material and high standards for assignments, and it was also taught with a lot of kindness, thoughtfulness, and understanding. Assignments have very clear guidelines which I appreciate.
the course content was very heavy and dark, and it affected me mentally. At times, I went into depressive episodes due to the intensity of the material. Despite this, the professor handled the subject thoughtfully and created a space where students could engage with challenging topics.
