Aside from being disorganized, hostile, disrespectful, insulting, and a natural born bureaucrat this man has too many faults to list. He has no business teaching anything to anyone.
Treats students like half-witted children and seems to have poor grasp of lab procedures. Enjoys belittling and insulting students.
The WORST professor I EVER had
Oh...to top off what everyone else has said, he speaks with a barely understandable accent. Organic chem is hard enough when your professor speaks fluent English.
not helpful, makes us use pen for homework and classwork. unapproachable.
He was the worst teacher I've had so far at LCC. He treats the students like children and he is very arrogant and mean. He made me cry on a few occasions. My worst enemy never treated me that badly. I worked my behind off to get a 3.0 and I was a 4.0 student prior to this course.
he is good
Just listen to what EVERYONE has said...horrible teacher, hard to understand, cant ask questions, cant approach him away from class, just a real punk to be honest...
To me, the teacher trys to make you think he cares but that was far from what he meant. There was no convenient time he could meet. And what everyone else has said is totally true, except for the one person who said he was good. (It could have been the teacher himself.) LOL
Professor Campbell is very knowledgable about Chemistry. He is by all means not an easy teacher and at times he goes through material very fast, but if you study and listen carefully in class, his classes are possible to pass.
horrible person
Never studied so hard in my life and still failed. Taking the class again with Nofzinger. I've gotten help from him before and he seems to do very well at teaching this material.
I felt that dr. campbell was fair. although it was by far my most difficult class, his class was one of the few times here at lcc that i felt like i was being expected to perform like a college student. very quick, very dry humor that is borderline genius, but you know you shouldn't laugh...he's that tough. i 4.0'd the class, but it was tricky.
Professor Campbell can be very strict and tough on his tests. Orgo 1 and 2 were the two toughest class I've EVER taken, I made it through both Orgo 1 & 2 with a 3.0 (so close to a 3.5) with professor Campbell. I felt that I could've done better if I tried harder, but I believed professor Cambell tries his hardest to help his students learn. I respe
I took him a couple years ago for orgo 2 and lab. Yeah, he's tough, but you learn far more about how things actually work. Most teachers just have you memorize things, this guy just makes you think. (god forbid) He's tough in lab, but it's good for you if you are a chem major. The real world is just as tough!
Overall Poor Quality, Teaches to make his life as easy as possible not to helo Students.
He was the worst and most stuck up professor I've ever had. He was bitter he had to teach 151 instead of up level Chemistry. Maybe someone needs to remind him, he is teaching at a community college.
Strict professor with a dry sense of humor. He has rules which are not flexible. His lectures are organized. Study the lecture notes, since all of his exam questions come from them and not the textbook. He will make "adjustments" (i.e. exams get easier) in the difficulty of the class if the class does poorly as a whole, but that is rare.
Absolutely the worst professor in the history of school. He ignors the students, treats them like kids, extremely dry humor, doesn't deserve to teach. He should not teach anyone anything. All the other comments are true, except the people that liked him. Switch classes to another teacher. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!!
Anybody taking organic chemistry I would recommend him.I hated Orgo but he was very organized, and available 4 days a week to help you. People who say he is mean, rude and horrible, mean to say he is strict. He is very nice and helpful, and has a great sense of humor. There are easier teachers for Gen Chem. It is very possible to 4.0 this class.
Very hard! Hate chemistry now
not very clear, or very helpful. somewhat strict. not recommended
very clear in teaching concepts. extremely hard but helpful. He is the person to learn from if you are serious about learning. If you are not serious about learning, look elsewhere.
This man, while brilliant, does NOT do a good job teaching. He is extremely smart, but he assumes that everyone knows things that they don't. I very much recommend not keeping this teacher if you are managed to be stuck with him for this class. I am wholly unimpressed with his teaching methods. It is monotone and uninteresting.
He is terrible...Yea he makes you think but he also is not willing to help you, and you looks at you like you are stupis if you ask a question. You can not undestand the man, and he is not willing to help you...I do not reccomens him!!
Dont take this profesor! He is horrible, his grading is not fair, and even if your answer is completely correct, if he doesn't like it or you then too bad YOU LOSE! If you have any problems he is the head so you have to go to him with your complaints about him. Other Chem professors will tell you he is EVIL!
Very demanding of his students, but always available for help outside of class. If you plan on screwing around on his class, prepare to fail. If you really work hard and go to him with any questions, you should do fairly well in Campbell's class. He's a pretty funny guy, too.
He's easily the funniest teacher I've had in a while (we're planning a "Magnus bingo card" for finals week). He's very organized and clear in what he wants, and is always available for help. Consequently, his exams are murder, and his quizzes are just smaller exams (~4 pages). Biggest advice: take him, but use the book whenever possible.
Worst professor at LCC. possibly in michigan. He is mean, and I dont know how everyone is saying he is helpful. At first you think he is nice, but he made many people cry. when you first take a course,it depends on the professor if you like that subject or not. He made me hate chemistry all together, and made me fear it even.
I took Magnus for orgo II and I must say this guy is the most polarizing man on campus. It's either you want to hug him, or you want to send him a death threat (he's gotten them before, lol). Orgo is basically a hazing session as is, and Magnus truly kicks it up a notch. If you 4.0 this class, you can get probably get through grad school.
Terrible teacher. I could not begin to elaborate on this in 350 words. Let's just say that I was very lucky he had surgery for a good part of the semester and someone else subbed for him. She was MUCH clearer and I would have had a MUCH better experience with her from the start. Don't take Magnus, I hugely regret not taking the advice on here.
Terrible. At one point in an exam on a multiple choice question the correct answer was "d. both a and b", I circled d, a, and b, (all three) and received NO CREDIT for the problem. This is just one of MANY EXAMPLES of absolute ridiculous and illogical behavior that serves no purpose but making the class hell. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Dr. Campbell teaches his classes like they are taught at universities. THIS IS A GOOD THING. Since I am not going to college to be BFFs with my professors and, you know, learn stuff, I liked him-his class was hard, and I worked my butt off. He is very helpful, appreciates and recognizes when you come to him. Do what he asks, and you'll do well.
Lectures and sample questions do not correspond to test questions at all. Tests are pointed and graded extremely to your disadvantage. He seems to get discrete pleasure at seeing his students struggle. Trust me, when all other classes are filled besides his and the 8am, take the 8am.
This dude is hilarious! The only bad thing is that he does NOT offer extra credit :( and is extremely picky. Beware, he does mark you down if you misspell words or have the wrong heading. But don't get me wrong, he is an extremely nice instructor and does explain things very well. In addition, he only tests you on what is covered in class!
Very difficult to understand. Very Demanding, rarely directly answers a question. If you can get another prof, I would definitely suggest taking orgo with someone else
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He teaches very fast paced and if one has a question he patronizes the person asking the question. He should not be a professor. I tend to 3.5 classes, and his class was hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM
not a good people person and does not know how to appeal to students in any way at all. Will not work with you in most cases and does not answer questions without first making you feel dumb for asking.
He's tough, there's no doubt about that. But he really is always available for help, and he frequently asks for questions, and always answers them, plus will work with you during office hours. He tries to make his lectures interesting, and while he is probably the harshest grader, it's worth it if you're going into a chemistry-heavy field.
He takes information from future assignments, and places them in earlier tests. Says one thing in instruction on little details that are often subjective or instructor preference (ie sig figs) and then grades differently on tests. He has serious logical fallacies in his instruction and grading design. Also disrespectful.
In all fairness it is difficult material to understand much less teach. That being said, Magnus' behavior is rude. Simply said, he's a jerk.
Mean. He speaks to everyone like they are kids. Do not recommend.
Terrible people skills. Even though he knows what he's talking about with the subject, it's hard to follow. Will only allow questions on his time. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Dr. Campbell's teaching style is unique. At first I was highly intimidated by him but as the semester went on I began to respect him. My advice to you would be to study the notes that he provides. Be quiet, respectful, and attentive and he will treat you professionally! Overall I WOULD recommend his class...don't let his personality scare you away.
Magnus is..."special." If he acts too "special," contact the department administration for assistance or class transfer.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had. wanted to withdrawal from class and he refused to sign my withdrawal form. told a girl that sat behind me that if she couldnt understand the information he was teaching then she would never become anything in life. one of the most disrespectful people i have ever met in my life. Do not take him!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Campbell is an excellent professor. He's really smart and helpful but expects a lot from his students. If you study his notes and talk to him during office hours he will help you....do not be afraid.
HORRIBLE! THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVERY HAD IN MY LIFE!!! Do NOT take him! He will make you feel like the smallest person in the world! He won't answer any of your questions and if you want to see a problem figured all the way to the end I hope you know what you are doing and that you have the right answer because he won't give you the answer at all!
Professor Campbell is extremely difficult to understand, doesn't pay attention to his students, and frankly doesn't care. I wouldn't recommend to take him AT ALL! Switch if you can. It's an extremely hard course. He makes chemistry the most boring subject possible.
His class is so hard it should be a reality show.
This is not an easy class and Dr. Campbell finds a way to make it even more difficult. The best advice is to ask as many questions as you can and and don't give up. You may not pass with a 4.0 or 3.5 but passing is definitely possible.
Class and material are very hard.Doesn't answer q's in class because there is too much material to stop for q & a's,but he makes himself available by phone & office hours if you need help.If you don't study and do your homework you'll fail.He is very structured, gives you what you need but it's college and he won't hold your hand.
I love every science related class, but this instructor made this tests so detailed that you can never get a 90% or better, i know the course is hard, but the tests are made to 100% fail you, avoid this instructor at all cost!!
Magnus creates an environment that does little to nurture success. He appears to be very bored while teaching, and he himself does not appear inspired by the material. He seldom offers breaks, offers no chances for grade improvement, and does not offer reviews for the exams. He appears to find pleasure in the struggle of others. Choose Ed...
I'm a 4.0 student,I had to drop this class because it was ridiculous. I was failing, he wanted us to remember every detail of the secetion and would NEVER tell you what would be on the test. He's a nice enough guy but his way of teaching is not one that is easy to understand.
do not take this professor for this course! IM WARNING YOU!
Not an easy course. I've never taken a CHEM course in my life before this. Still, if you pay attention in class, utilize the practice problems he gives, and care about the material, you can pull off a good grade.
He lectures with one purple surgical glove and talks witha heavy accent.
Magnus has quite the reputation on-campus; don't buy into it. Orgo requires a LOT of work regardless of the instructor. Magnus is one of the most organized and orderly professors I've ever had- knows his stuff. He will help you if you ask. GO to office hours! Study lecture notes. Try to pick up his subtle hints on test ?s. Pay attention to details.
Firstly, this teacher is unclear , and impossible to understand. Second, he lectures completely off of slides for the entire two hour class. He rarely gives breaks during the class, and lectures before tests. Avoid this teacher at all costs. I believe that with a different teacher I would have achieved a 4.0.
Magnus was the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. He explained complex orgo concepts clearly. They don't call organic chemistry a weeder class for nothing, this class is hard. The tests were reasonable, and yes there were students who failed, but it is organic chemistry. If you are a chemistry major, you must take Magnus. He is the best.
Prof. Campbell had my class take our last regular exam and the final exam within two days of each other, not leaving us adequate time to prepare for the final. He has this thing where he doesn't finish when he is demonstrating solving a chemistry problem on the board. He seemed like he didn't care for helping students. Avoid this professor
Very clear and helpful if you're willing to put forth the effort. Go to his office hours and ask questions. Read the textbook, do your homework. He isn't very personal with students for the most part but he is an excellent instructor.
Dr. Campbell is a wonderful teacher. He is constantly making himself available for students during his office hours. Students need to realize that they are the ones that need to put in the time and work to pass. He respects students that work hard in his class. This IS a difficult class, but he is a good teacher. He is very organized and prompt.
Dr. Campbell is a great professor. If you put in the work, come to class, do the homework, and utilize his study materials, you will be fine. He makes pop culture references and jokes in class to try to keep it somewhat interesting. He wants his students to do well. Always encourages questions and office hours. Very thorough in lectures as well.
Let me start of by saying avoid this teacher. I do pretty well in all of my classes and I found the material in this class to be about what I expected. On a test I did everything right for a question and got 1 pt out of 8. When I talked to him about it he told me I was completely wrong then got mad when I suggesting he write the question better.
This class is difficult. It is Organic Chemistry, so you are going to have to put in the effort and not be lazy about it. Don't complain. Ask for help if you need it. Form study groups. Do not coast in the beginning because it does get harder in the end. Magnus has taught me a lot in this class and I would take another class with him.
YOU HAVE TO GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is a very nice person and is willing to take the time to go over the material with you. Also, if you go to his office hours he will help you with homework, exams, and quiz questions. If you don't pass this class it's only because you didn't ask questions or go to his office hours. Also the book is not needed
I understand Magnus has a lot of bad reviews and a lot of people avoid taking his classes but he is one of the most helpful teachers I have ever had. He is VERY tough but if you want to pass the class, and go to him during office hours, you WILL pass. Even though I may not ever four point one of his classes I will always choose him as a professor:)
Pay attention, be polite and respectful and you'll do well. Do all the homework, print out the practice exams and class problems from D2L, and study these before each test and quiz. The nomenclature handout from the first class, you must COMPLETELY MEMORIZE before the first quiz. If he doesn't tell you *not* to memorize something, memorize it.
If you are interested in teaching yourself very difficult subject matter then this is the course for you. Magnus clearly states his disinterest in teaching this you "should already know", which he applies to many things. Ignore everyone telling you to use his office hours because all he does is answer your questions with more questions.
Genuinely cares about and wants his students to succeed. Lectures tend to be long and boring and exams are tough but doable. Overall, his class wasn't a terrible experience but isn't one I would want to go through again.
Would highly discourage anyone from taking this class unless you enjoy teaching yourself the material and like to sit in class and listen to an extremely uninspiring lecture.
Excellent teacher. Grades tough, but gives extra credit and gives you some choice of which problems to answer on tests. Helpful in office hours. Don't argue with him, be polite, show up to every class, study like mad, do all the homework (that's where the extra credit is) and you'll pass with a good grade.
For lab, Dr. Campbell is a little unusual. Very strict grading on experiment results, even if you explain in your report why your yield was low and how to fix it next time, you get docked. I think if you show up to every lab, do all the work and all the assignments, and get a good grade on the final, a 4.0 should be easy for a lab. Barely got it
He tests on much more elaborate questions than what he taught. By the end of class all but 7 had dropped.
Dr. Campbell is a very tough grader and expects a lot of his students, but it is definitely possible to do well in his class. If you show the initiative to go to his office hours and ask questions, he will do what he can to help you understand the material. If you show up at class, do all of the assignments and practice problems, you will be ok.
Dr. Campbell is a great professor if you try your best in his class. He's willing to help you during his office hours. Pay attention to the questions he asks in class because they will be on your exams. These are hard chemistry courses so they require a lot of time and effort. All the best!
He is confusing and moves very fast.
Off the start of class he seemed intimidating, but once you get to be around him he is actually a really cool guy. Do all the work, and listen to the questions he asks in class because they will most likely be on the exams. The exams are tough, but he will always be available to help you when needed. Great professor overall, he does his job well.
Dr. Campbell's class was very challenging. This class was challenging because he did not fully explain any concepts and sped through his lectures. He would also ask if people had any questions and would then seem annoyed when he had to answer them. The tests were confusing and had things that we did not cover in class. Would not recommend.
This is a hard class and Campbell tells you like it is. Don't test him, you will lose. He is brilliant, but he works through the curriculum very fast because there is a lot. If you put in the time you'll do alright, but you cannot treat this class like any other. Get a tutor or work with an SI. WRITE DOWN QUESTIONS and ask later. He knows his stuff
Dr. Campbell starts off intimidating, but he is an excellent teacher. He is serious about organic chemistry and wants you to succeed, but you will have to put forth the effort. Attend the SI sessions and go to his office hours. He is very knowledgeable and will help those who make the effort. Don't afraid to ask questions if you are confused.
Dr. Campbell expects students are mature enough in a college level. Meaning do your chemlab homework, do class problems, and be prepared with questions during the last minutes of class, or office hours. He does explain well when you bring him individual questions. However, his grading is tough. There is quizzes in his class. Lecture is monotonous
Campbell will lead you right into new material, ask you questions, and then be upset because he has to answer them for you. He will call you out in front of the entire class to answer a question and gets frustrated when you give an incorrect answer. You must show up on time if not early to stay on his good side.
Awesome Professor
Not an effective teacher. Was unwilling on most occasions to work through problems to the end, this is likely do to the tremendous amount of material he plans on covering each class. If at all possible, try taking this course with another instructor.
Nice Guy, Tries to be funny, Tests are tough but he will give a little leeway on his grades. I don't think he should be your prof for intro chem classes, but he will help outside of class
Test and quizzes are insane. Lots of material is covered in a very short. A.M. class with him is very difficult. Definitely need honors to ap chem from high school or the chem course prior to this one. A very monotone voice that makes the lectures long and boring. It seems like his teaching style is a more advanced one for an intro level course.
Does not help you if you are confused. Went to his office hours just to get turned away. Said I needed to attempt the problem but I had no idea what to do. Lectures all class, very monotone and boring. You will need to find a helpful SI or tutor just to get you on the right track if you are lost/confused.
By far the best science teacher I have had. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFFICE HOURS. He is available before or after class almost everyday. If you go to office hours, he will do everything in his power to make sure you get a 4.0. Don't need to take many notes because he prints of slides before the unit. All around great class. Be ready to learn a lot.
I would not have done as well as I did without his office hours. I recommend everyone to take advantage of those if you plan to take his class. Did everything he could to help me succeed and has a good sense of humor.
I thought Magnus was a really great professor. The class itself is really tough but he is always willing to answer questions and explain things better after class. You will need to study material on your own after class but if you work hard you can do good in the class. Only con is he is a really tough grader!
He grades things in a nitpicking way so any remotely wrong thing he will find and Mark you down on. He wastes way too much class time so the final units have to be rushed. Don't try to ask him anything in class or you'll get rejected and told to ask in his ridiculous office hours.
Worst professor I have ever encountered. Do yourself a favor and take this at whatever school you're transferring to. Most schools have tutoring centers and any other professor would be better than him. We didn't even make it to the final unit. We ended up being retested on the hardest material of the course again and again instead of new material.
His only goal when grading anything is to take away points. It does not matter what, he will find a point to take away from you. Grammar, etc. Non chem related. Most of the homework has literally nothing to do with ochem, it's like a terrible English class. Very rude and demanding (the type to ask a question, then not let you answer but yes/no)
His class has no content. This is bad. The only content is the slides without information he passes out. You get nothing in this class, including no communication. This means no homework to practice concepts. His lectures are uninteresting & uninformative. On top of all this, he trys to psychologically irritate you and make you feel bad. Awful.
I am in school to create a foundation of knowledge and cultivate my skills to become a professional chemist. However, this class has no focus, the lectures are not useful, there is no clear path to any clear goal, there is minimal homework related to chem, but a lot of homework that relates to nothing that has any value (summaries of magazines).
I don't like this class. I think the homework is useless, therefore I don't do it. It doesn't benefit me very much. it's not approached in a constructivist manner. I don't like how the professor doesn't let you know anything specific about the exam. Lecture feels meaningless, I skip that. Ignore everything - read textbook front to back - success.
Exams are absolute bullocks. The reviews do not correspond in the slightest to the actual Exam, videos in his course are inaccessible. Great Man though.
Magnus Campbell is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. He is unable to teach efficiently and talks complete nonsense during his mandatory lectures. Will definitely not ever take a class by him again.
You wont pass if you skip class not because of missing his terrible lectures, but for the fact that he will refuse to grade anything if you skip and fail you on quizzes, homework, labs, etc. Terrible professor who hates the world.
He really makes you work for a good grade and there is a lot of homework but he is always available to help during his office hours. Plan on spending a good amount of time studying if you want good scores.
CHEM151 is a simple class, unless you take it with magnus. Take this class with anybody else, you'll get a better education without this professors contrivances to make you fail. He's certainly prejudice against white people, and he is probably anti-social in general. "Make you work for it" is nonsense, there's nothing to work for. Its chem 151.
I STRONGLY recommend taking this class while it is offered online if you have to take it, so you can use notes on the quizzes/tests. It's extremely hard to learn upper level chemistry online, and his teaching style is unique, but if you take time and ask questions he is so genuinely caring about your success. He guides you to answers.
Do not take this professor. There is no clear grading criteria and his reviews do not even compare to the exam contents. He tries to be funny, but really he's condescending and racist. If you take him, be ready for tough exams, no help, mandatory and pointless lectures, bad grades.
Dr. Campbell, in my experience, does not compromise when it comes to his syllabus. What the syllabus says is what goes so make sure you adjust your schedule to accommodate this class!
Where to begin. He graded my exam wrong multiple times, he gets passive aggressive when you have a lot of questions and DOES NOT EXPLAIN THINGS WELL (ya know, the main part of being a teacher). Has zero enthusiasm. 80% of everything I learned I had to find my self. Chem is not a hard subject but Dr. Campbell makes it harder than it needs to be.
Worst instructor I've had, hypocritical, blames students for his mistakes. Example: not following through with promises, marking students' exam submissions incorrect for showing work even though instructions don't specify that work should NOT be shown. His PowerPoints are ugly and full of small errors, inexcusably low quality for an online class.
I have never had a professor like Dr. Campbell. He is the epitome of strict/rude. You are expected to attend classes that are beyond fast paced. If you turn in assignments late, expect a zero. He is completely unsympathetic/does not explain anything well. This is a self study course. And did I mention he is a very tough grader? Never again . . .
Have to work very hard to figure things out yourself as he is not great at teaching. He does not seem to recognize that his style of teaching does not work for online classes. Grade is made entirely out of quizzes, exams, and homework that never gets graded. Chem is not the most difficult class, and general chem 1 should not be this strenuous.
I've taken Campbell for CHEM251 and CHEM252, both of these classes were the toughest classes I've ever done. There is no multiple choice, and the quizzes and exams are everything for your grade. Pay close attention in lecture, take notes, review notes, and go to office hours even if you don't have questions. The more he sees your name, the better.
I took him for CHEM 251, very tough class. I was a 4.0 student and got a 3.0. Your grade relies heavily on the quizzes and exams. They are all free response, no multiple choice, you have to really know your stuff. Most questions are nothing like what he provides examples of. Be prepared for strict grading and teaching yourself the material.
You're going to either love him or hate him. Come to class with the desire to learn chemistry and put in the effort and he'll match that effort to help you excel. Every test grade you receive is the test grade earned. He's there to teach you Chemistry and teach is what he does well.
This is the first grade I have ever received below a B+, I attended every class, participated in every office hour, and turned in every homework assignment. I also studied for a minimum of an 45 minutes every day and still averaged a 61% on exams. I still cannot think of a way someone could do great in this class
Worst professor I have ever had. When students had questions, he rarely provided clear explanations and I have even witnessed him yell at a student for still being confused. He literally just teaches by reading word for word off of a slideshow and then makes up questions that often barely related to what was taught. I do not recommend him.
This was the hardest class I ever took and I have never cried so much. Regardless, this class prepared me so much for my future education. Campbell teaches so that you KNOW the material for future uses. After his orgo classes and transferring to a higher institution, I am ahead of my peers in orgo knowledge and understanding. 100% worth the tears.
