Professor Mahesh is a new PhD graduate, he clearly doesn't have a lot of teaching experience, the class is really dry and he doesn't communicate very well.
Good class but you must work through he problems otherwise you won't get anything out of it.
While the class was not what I expected it turned out to be one of the few I enjoyed. Mahesh took time to answer all questions in and out of class. He clearly cares about the students and the quality of the education.
I have attended Doing Data Science class (Introductory course for Masters in Data Science) with Prof Mahesh. He was crisp in his expectations, run office hours to help me and other students, The course material, pace, home works, and efforts required to obtain good grades were top class. Mahesh provided adequate guidance and feedback. Thank you Sir!
This class has 2 case studies. I like the assignments in this class, it will give you opportunity to hands on the program codes and figure out the syntax by work on them. The break down session in each live session gave us opportunity to collaborate with other classmates. Dr. Fernando was always responding when you have the questions.
Mahesh's primary desire is for his students to learn the material and be able to apply it. He goes out of his way to explain things thoroughly.
Mahesh was always very thorough and was willing to listen to the class if we felt overwhelmed or confused. Good prof! Definitely take him.
Professor Mahesh was an outstanding professor. H e taught Me Statistical Sampling and Doing Data Science. His lecture, material sources, his approach were all extraordinarily effective job. I really would like to be lectured by him again, again, and ever. Good job professor!
Prof. Fernando is an excellent professor. His teaching style and knowledge is so vast and you always come out of lectures with full of knowledge and with a smile. He is very inspirational and an excellent communicator. He is able to inspire me to pursue Phd in this field. I learned a lot from his classes. I wish he was teaching all of my classes.
Professor Fernando goes through the lesson very fast so it is hard to take notes during the lectures. His tests are very similar to the reviews, which makes studying manageable. He also allows you to use a notecard on the test. He gives a quiz every class as a way to take attendance. HW once a week out of textbook. Would take again, A is do-able.
Dr. Fernando is a good lecturer who also incorporates group activities into his live sessions. He has a deep understanding of the material and is very approachable and reasonable when it comes to grading. From a student's perspective, Dr. Fernando is a low-risk proposition as far as professors are concerned.
Professor Fernando tailors his lecture material to emphasize important concepts and has the ability to simplify complicated statistical theory into digestible pieces.
I thought I learned quite a bit in this course. The tests are modeled after what we learned in the class, so you shouldn't be surprised by any of the questions. He had reasonable expectations and explained things pretty well.
Prof. Fernando was extremely approachable and always ready to offer his help. He has been thorough while grading projects and exams and very detail on feedbacks. I do appreciate his guidance, even beyond the scope of the course, to success in my future career.
Fernando likes to go through the material very quickly. It's hard to understand what he says at times too. The tests were inconsistent, the 1st and 3rd were really easy but the 2nd and final were both pretty hard. The homework he gives isn't anything like the lectures or tests either. He didn't know how to use canvas so your grade there isn't right
Prof. Fernando is a very good teacher. He held extra review sessions before each exam. He put a lot of examples in his slides to describe stat concepts.
Professor Fernando is a great teacher. He really wants you to succeed and he makes the material very easy to understand! If you put effort in, youll do great in his class. The tests have no surprises- its all what youve gone over in class. Highly recommend!!!
Dr. Fernando's done a phenomenal job interacting with students. He has passion for the subject and want students to succeed. His dry humor makes a dull subject durable. This course is meant for you to get an A.
He is an amazing professor. If you show up to class and follow the notes you will get an A. Put in studying time and prepare for the tests, but not so much work that you are overwhelmed. Very manageable. Homework assignments really help you understand the material. He is open to questions and really wants everyone to understand the material.
Youll be fine as along as you go to class and do the homework. Most of the work is done in class, and he explains the math very well and the homework takes less than an hour. He makes it very simple and easy to learn.
By far the best professor I have had at SMU. Incredibly helpful both inside and outside of class. Wants his students to succeed & understand the course material to the best of their ability. Great feedback. Put the work in w/ the homework assignments & study 1-2hr per day & youre basically guaranteed an A. Also provides extra credit opportunities.
Professor Fernando was one of the best professors ive had at smu! he was very clear in his lectures and homework assignments. he wants his students to do well, and he structures his classes for that! his notes are super helpful, and his office hours are great! take his class if you want to actually enjoy stats!
Professor Mahesh is one of the best professors I had at SMU so far. If you Show him that youre interested and willing to work hard youll end up with an A.
He has a very strong accent. Attendance taken every day even with big lecture. You get to use a notecard on the tests which is nice and he drops your lowest grade. His lectures are kind of boring; however, it is an intro to stats class so how interesting can it really be.
He is really a good professor, giving 3 Exams and one comprehensive final. His exams are consisting of short answers and multiple choice questions. There is homework for each chapter. I think he is an easy grader. I got an A in his class.
The structure is very clear, so it is very easy to arrange your study. No required textbook, all materials are provided in class. The grade is based on only a few times for really easy homework, some in-class assignments (finish before next class), and a couple quizzes. All the contents are easy. Show up, finish the assignments and easy A.
His class was cake. The tests are super easy and the assignments aren't bad either. Just remember to turn stuff in or else your grade will suffer.
Dr. Mahesh is awesome. His lectures are clear and concise. It's important to attend every lecture and lab because a part of your grade is attendance. There is usually weekly homework but it takes no longer than an hour. Dr. Mahesh is willing to work with his students outside of class until you understand the material. Definitely a solid professor!
He prints out the lecture for you every class, gives you a practice exam and example problems, lets you use a notecard on every test and holds review sessions before every class. He gives you everything you need to get a good grade. The labs usually get out early. Pretty easy class if you put in effort. He's also a great guy.
Fernando is a great guy but sometimes it's hard to pay attention in his class because he explains things multiple times over. It's not hard to understand the material if you go to class and pay attention. If not, you can still read the book which does a pretty good job of explaining stuff but it gets kind of confusing if you don't go to class.
He is a nice guy, but he is not easy to work with. He can be dismissive in office hours, and he can be tough to understand with his accent. The class as a whole isnt great curriculum wise, but its manageable.
This was the best professor I had hands down (I even changed my major to stats because of him). I woke up an hour late to the final and he still let me take it, that's forgiveness at a maximum. At the end of the semester, he tells a very emotional story which makes you assure what life is really about and what you want from it. I love this man.
Gives you 3 class and 2 lab absences for full attendance credit. Labs and HW are a completion grade. Gives practice tests that are half of the actual tests and the tests are the exact same as the previous semester. lets you use a notecard on all exams. super nice guy, 10/10 recommend
Dr. Fernando is a great teacher. He explained the material very well. Inclass activities were super helpful. I like SAS and R. I definitely will take 4370 with him.
Absolutely awesome teacher. Cares for his student and is incredibly helpful. Would recommend his classes to anyone
I was so intimidated to take this class and do not consider myself good at math, but Professor Fernando was so patient and explained the concepts so well that I got an A. He prints out the lecture slides for you every class, lets you bring a notecard of formulas to exams and a full size sheet of paper of formulas for the final. Take him!
This is one of the best professors Ive had. He definitely wants his students to do well and is helpful in and out of class. Tests are straight forward and you get to bring in a notecard.
One of the best professors at SMU. He always makes himself available to help if you are struggling in the class and will help you until you understand the concepts. I highly recommend this class and Professor Fernando! Plus you get to bring a notecard to tests which helps with any test anxiety.
Dr. Fernando is one of the best profs in the statistics department. His lectures are technical, but he gives plenty of practice problems and homeworks that prepare you for the test. Hes willing to help you Outside of class if youre confused
Mahesh is a super nice professor who definitely cares about his students. It is an easy A if you show up and do the homework. He is a little hard to understand sometimes with his accent, but he is a very good teacher. Would definitely take him again.
He has NO SYLLABUS. Will email you over the weekend randomly to assign you lengthy homework. Gives long powerpoint lectures (74 slides within 45 minutes of class!!). Exams are wayyy too long so no one finishes on time. Coding takes time and he doesn't allocate enough time during the exam for that. Don't take this professor if you can avoid it
no syllabus/in class notice of assignments. sends a random email on saturday to assign you lengthy homework due tuesday. SUPER long powerpoint lectures (74 slides wfor 50 mins of class). exams are super long and people barely finish. do not take if you've never coded before. not worth the work.
Dr. Fernando cares a lot about his students. If you put forth good effort, then you will find his classes to be manageable and enjoyable. I highly recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Fernando was very helpful during this class. It's powerpoint heavy, but he gives plenty of examples so you can know what to expect on homeworks and exams. I learned a lot of valuable tools in terms of R programming.
Professor Fernando is a kind, good professor. However, if you are not good at math and taking STAT 2331 to fulfill your UC requirement, this class will be extremely challenging for you. He is lecture heavy and once you get lost it is tough to get back on track. Overall good guy, just tough class if you are not a math person.
Professor Fernando is alright and this intro to stats is as good as it can be for a Cox required course. He reads off powerpoints and prints them for you. The tests are super easy exactly like the practice ones he gives. The lectures can be a little painful especially because attendance is mandatory, but it's straightforward and easy.
Mahesh is a great professor. Attendance is awarded with 3 points and at the end of the semester he drops your zeros (if you skipped class). He teaches you all the material you need to know. We have only had 2 tests and a final this semester and he drops your lowest homework grade too. Overall, I would have him as a professor again.
Professor Fernando is a decent professor. His stats classes are huge so don't expect to build a relationship with him or anything. The lectures and material are incredibly dull so the class can be hard to get through if you're not super interested in stats. He does try hard to make sure everyone makes good grades and offers a lot of extra credit.
This prof is super great. The class is easy because he teaches it well and gives you every chance to succeed. You have to actually go to class because he'll give easy little pop quizzes but as long as you show up and pay attention I don't see how anyone could get a bad grade. He also gives you index cards for the tests.
Professor Fernando is great! He gives a syllabus with a clear grading breakdown and his entire class was very organized. He lectures every class and gives in class activities. You get a cheat sheet on quizzes/tests so you don't have to memorize code. It's a very manageable class if you put some effort in. He's very accessible outside of class.
Take this professor! He really cares about his students and is very organized. He gives a practice test the week before each test that is very similar to the real test. He posts all powerpoints, is a fair grader, and is very kind. There is one homework assignment a week, make sure you do the homework because it really boosts your grade. Take him!
Dr. Fernando is an excellent, caring professor. He prints the slides and hands them out at the beginning of each class and includes plenty of examples to help work through the homework. He gives practice tests that are very similar to the real exams and the lab instructor goes through them. I would definitely take him again!
If you attend lectures and pay attention in class, it is very easy to do well in this course. Also, he is very accessible outside of class if you ever have any questions. He wants to see everyone in the class do well, and he explains all the concepts very clearly.
Professor Fernando was an overall great STAT's professor! His guidelines for his test were always very thorough & easy to navigate. If you attend the lectures and pay attention you will have no troubles getting a great grade in the class. Also he lets you use a notecard as a cheatsheet for every exam
He was great! Clear lectures, easy to understand, and fair grading. Made it doable and enjoyable!
You can tell he's passionate about the subject and if you show up to class, you're bond to do well. Definitely recommend.
The professor and his TAs are great on giving feedback. They show passion and interest in the subject. His lectures can be dull, but every slide contains useful info and examples. If you pay attention in class and attend every lecture, no need for extra learning and stress outside of class.
The class is super straightforward, theres quizzes every day for participation only usually like three questions at most and homework every Friday which isnt bad at all. His practice tests are a great way to study for the exams. He genuinely wants you to do well and sets you up for success.
Great Professor! He is clear, organized, good about answering questions, and a very nice and caring professor. I've always struggled with math, but he lectures very well. Professor Mahesh has been the best Math teacher I've had so far, so I definitely recommend him!
I loved Professor Fernandos class having in count that STATS is not an easy subject. He gave amazing lectures and broke down the material in a way that is easy to understand. There is a homework every week and Matlab. He is super helpful in her office hours where he is ready to answer any and all questions you may have about the material. I'd take
Dr. Fernando is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Although a concept initially seems confusing, he explains examples to ensure everyone understands. He is helpful in office hours with specific questions and welcomes questions during class. The material is not easy, but if you study and practice, you'll love the class!
Professor Fernando was always willing to answer questions. A very caring professor who wants his students to do well. Pay attention in class and make the most of your cheat sheets.
Took this class for Jan Term. Professor Fernando did an amazing job at explaining the concepts, the code, and how to apply it. He was accessible outside of class and encouraged questions in class. Guided in-class activities helped me feel confident in the information I was learning. A few exams and homework ensure your preparation for the exams.
I took him for Mayterm and never felt like I was lost or did not understand what was going on. He does in class assignments that count for a grade, but they are easy if you pay attention and most of the time he explains how to do them step by step. If you pay attention in class and do your homework it is not difficult.
This teacher sucks. He has a really tough accent, doesn't explain things well, and isn't lenient. He has quizes every class day and, if your camera goes off during class, it's just an auto 0. Take someone else.
Professor Mahesh is an amazing professor! I took him over May term and his powerpoints were always informative and straightforward. He gives you lots of examples and is very willing to help his students. I would highly recommend taking Professor Fernando!
Professor Fernando wants his students to succeed and provides opportunities to them to do so. He drops the lowest lab, hw, and quizzes which adds a boost to the grade. If you show up to class and understand the examples, tests are simple.
He's a nice guy. The class isn't too bad, even if you don't like coding - tests are open notes, so as long as you can do the examples you'll be fine. There's something due every class, but he always goes over how to do the examples and activities so it's not bad at all. If you need a stats class, this is a great one to take.
Professor Fernando definitely wants all of his students to succeed and get a good grade ! As long as you know how to do all the examples and practice problems, should be fairly easy to get an A. He even gave an inspirational lecture/talk to us at the end of the semester , really cares for his students. Highly recommend !
I had professor Mahesh Fernando for my Introductory Statistics course, and overall he was a great professor. His lectures were very clear and concise, and there were many examples throughout class that were similar to test questions. The textbook was very supplementary in this class, as most of the information needed was in the lectures.
He is very very nice and overall a great professor!! The exams were pretty hard but he lets you have a cheat sheet which is awesome. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed!! If you pay attention in class and actually study you should do well, he just talks pretty fast so you have to pay attention pretty hard. He's great!!
HW once a week. Doing hw and paying attention in class is the major effort for this class. It is really not a difficult class if you pay attention.
Professor Fernando is a great statistics teacher! Unfortunately, math is not my strong suit, but I managed to do well in the class by attending each lecture and paying attention to the material. He is fantastic at describing numerous examples and offering alternative routes to solutions. Put effort into this class, and it will pay off.
Professor Mahesh is a GREAT teacher. His lectures were thorough and he was very available for office hours to answer any questions on the material. He is very understanding and his exams are similar in difficulty to the practice exams, homework and in class practice problems. I highly recommend taking his class for STAT 2331!!!!
Professor Fernando is great. You can tell he cares about his students. He is very helpful and answers all questions thoroughly. Make sure to pay attention to the lectures and go to office hours.
The greatest professor to ever have been had. I haven't had this professor in a while but I was at a small party the other night and he came up in the conversation as everyone's favorite professor. Some people say his accent is hard to understand but to be honest it's not bad he teaches better than native English speaking profs. Take him
Mahesh is amazing take him if you can! I'm not a very strong math person, but his explanations and lectures are crystal clear and easy to follow. All the lecture slides and materials are on Canvas, plus he AND the TA (Seth is also amazing!) are very helpful with questions over email or office hours. He's also a sincerely sweet person I LOVE HIM
Great professor that wants you to succeed. You need to go to class to get the info from the lecture because that is the only way to learn the material and do well. Plus there are always in class assignments that count towards your grade. Open note tests and quizzes. Has an accent but would definitely take him again
Good man who really wants you to understand the material. Some topics can be tricky but it is a manageable class. Still requires a good understanding of statistics because class is based on previous material. Graded by multiple little things; two exams and final are all 20%. Always available and open to answer questions.
Professor Fernando is the best! All of his tests are open note and it is so easy to get a good grade in his class as long as you show up. He is very caring and accessible outside of class. Definitely take him!
Dr Fernando lectures well on material, and is good about returning exams in a timely manner, but he did cause a project mishap with not telling us who the final member was. He also takes some time to respond to emails, hence why the 4 star review instead of the 5 star review. Overall, I would take him again
Dr. Fernando is the best stat teacher I have ever seen. I was new to SAS and R. His introduction to these two was exceptional. I really like SAS and R after taking this course.
Dr. Fernando presented the course material in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. He was always willing to answer questions, both inside of and outside of class time, and gave helpful feedback on in-class activities, homework, and tests. I greatly enjoyed having him as my professor and hope to take him again in the future. Highly recommend!
Prof Fernando is very helpful when you have questions, and clearly explains topics. He allows a cheat sheet on the tests. Take this class if you are doing a Stat major or minor.
By far the best prof I've taken at SMU. SOOOO easy to get an A and he is so sweet and helpful
Whether you're an undergrad or in MASDA, I recommend enrolling in his classes. I took Prof. Fernando for STAT 3304 in Jan-Term and he was able to make the class bearable for every student, I believe the class average was a B+ towards the final! He's accessible outside class and his lectures correlate 100% with our assignments, quizzes, and exams.
Mahesh is an amazing professor who cares about every student understanding the material and doing well. Exams can be confusing because some questions deviate from what you learn in class. A good amount of homework but not particularly difficult because he goes over everything in class. If you don't want to go to class, don't take him.
Super nice guy, very caring of his students. Inspiring story, he teaches pretty effectively especially for a large intro to stats class.
Fernando is a great person and tries his best to help students. However, his teaching style did not fit me personally. I think he overcomplicated a lot of things, which other students also agree with. The practice exams are not similar to the exam. Great person, but wouldn't retake. The other stats professors are supposedly a lot easier.
Dr. Fernando is one of the best I had at SMU. I really like his teaching style. His inclass activities were very helpful to understand the concepts.
Professor Fernando is great. He is always available for office hours and really wants his students to succeed. If you pay attention and study for the tests, you will do well.
Gem of a professor. Clear grading criteria, and expectations. Be sure to never miss class. You can get bonus points at the end of the semester for not being absent! Go to office hours and ask questions. He helps SO much! Tests are easy if you study, but you do have to work quickly. If you put in the time, he will see it. Caring guy. Take this class
Prof. Fernando is a great professor, he really cares about students and makes sure that you understand the material. He gives lots of practice, so you actually learn. He is very accessible during office hours and answers emails in a timely manner. On top of that he is a very nice person. Lectures go fast but he gives you all the tools to succeed.
I have nothing but respect for Dr. Fernando and I am glad I was able to take a class taught by such a great professor.
Great professor and an easy A so long as you follow along with the lectures. Tests are on paper and he lets you have a notecard as a cheatsheet. There are end of class quizzes, but they're easy and you can look at your notes (previous packets) (quizzes took maybe 3 minutes tops for most people). Practice exams are basically the same as the tests.
