You can hardly understand him and he doesn't connect his ideas...
Very difficult to understand and speaks over students when they are asking questions.
Prof Masaeli can be difficult to understand if you're not really concentrating, but his ideas are straightforward and he's always willing to clarify.Only problem is he goes on tangents. Course content is interesting and a great intro to the field. Review sessions and tutorials very helpful. Do all required readings. Plus, he has a hilarious laugh.
Mahmoud is a really lovely guy, and obviously very passionate about teaching Development studies... I only wish he could convey that more charismatically and comprehensively in his lectures, they're very hard to follow and underwhelming.
Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his personal belief system. Would prefer if there were power point slides. In saying all this, easy to obtain a high grade as tests are easy and predictable.
I also took DVM 2105 which he taught. He is a passionate professor who invites students to share their views and takes on the subject. His assignments and exams involve exploration of our understanding of what we've learned in the context of world events. The course is still new but I enjoyed his courses thoroughly.
I was in both of his classes: DVM1100B and DVM2105 and I enjoyed his lectures.
His class was very interesting and you can tell that he is very passionate about what he is teaching. He tends to go off topic but can be very clear about the material. He speaks very quickly so be ready to take concise and lengthy notes during the lectures. There are no visual aids or online notes but, despite this, I enjoyed his class.
He was absolutely amazing! Very passionate about the subject and kept the class pretty entertaining most of the time. He is very approachable and pretty funny! If you do the readings you'll do great in the class
A very knowledgeable, approachable. and organized professor
Professor Mahmoud is an amazing professor. He is very intelligent and cares a lot about his students. He is always available to talk to and is eager to help his students. For a theories class, he did an excellent job of clearly explaining all of the concepts! I would definitely recommend this professor, one of the best!
This prof is an absolute sweetheart. He is such a nice, caring, grandfatherly man. Very helpful when you need it. You have to work for this class but it's rewarding. Only downside is that he is often hard to understand due to his accent, and stumbles over his words when he lectures because his notes are in Arabic and he translates as he lectures.
He is my favorite professor, he is the nicest guy ever, and I want to be his best friend
OMG! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. HE'S SUCH A KIND A GOOD PROFESSOR, CARES SO MUCH ABOUT HIS STUDENTS, EXPLAINS IDEAS LIKE A STORY FOR YOU TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HIM. HE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!! FIRST FINAL EXAM I GOT 30/30.. VERY HELPFUL MAN.
A little hard to understand at times but a great professor. passionate and just an overall genius. also willing to help.
Very passionate when speaking. Respect him a lot, appreciate what he does for the world and what he is doing for us. However, haha... he gets off topic, and gives us complex answers when we are just looking for one solid, concrete one
so incredibly difficult to understand. Going to class is mandatory but pointless.
the professor gets his points across effectively. Makes an effort to see if students understand the matter.
The prof. was amiable and enthusiastic about the subject matter and he was approachable.
Lots of critical approaches. encourages critical thinking. Professor Masaeli very personable and approachable. Always willing to give feedback and answers emails very promptly.
Very excellent prof.!!!
He is an awesome prof! He is super passionate and soo friendly. He doesn't push his political views on the class, he encourages us to think critically and have our perspectives and opinions. Great prof and great person as well!!!
He is a really smart and nice person.
Great prof!
Stimulating, energetic, enthusiastic, open to discussions, approachable, willing to help in any way possible, and the best prof. I have ever had.
I HATED this teacher. He basically preaches his point of view which is very narrow and naive. He doesn't understand what you're asking when you ask questions (when he lets you talk) and you cant understand what hes talking about. His slides don't make sense either, and he's disorganized and scatterbrained. He's well-meaning but a HORRIBLE prof.
Prof. was delightful to be around and made himself very available for questions/extra help. He was always prepared for class. Slides are perfectly organized and lay out what he expects us to know/understand.
Masaeli seriously works so hard. He is a little difficult to understand at times, but if you sit at the front, it's fine. He is so passionate, it is awesome! If you do the readings you will be golden! And his midterms go pretty indepth so make sure you know the topics well.
Masaeli was very passionate about what he was teaching. He was always available to help students outside of class.
Masaeli is very passionate. Cute in an old man sort of way. He's difficult to understand at times, but creates DGD groups with TAs for better understanding. I passed without doing any of the readings, but I wouldn't suggest it. I did not find the final exam difficult, but my mark dropped drastically. Although, marking is done primarily by TAs.
Amazing prof! I had him for DVM1100 and then again for DVM2105. He is very helpful, and understanding. He really wants his students to suceed! His accent is a little hard to understand at first, but once you get past that you'll notice how great of a prof he really is. Dont bother buying the textbook. Just use his slides.
Professor was super nice and always willing to help us and explain concepts. The text book was very relevant and the price was low which was nice.
He was very well-meaning, but at the end of the day, his course was disorganized, confusing, and all in all, a lot of memorization work. I could not understand his accent at all, and he had mic problems all semester which contributed to my confusion. In summary, sweet guy, but not the best at lecture-style teaching.
I found his lectures difficult to follow and his accent even harder to follow. However, the course content is not too hard to understand and he is there to help if you need it. He is very helpful if you seek help. He loves to talk to students Very nice man
Everyone loves this prof. He is a bit hard to understand at first, but you'll get used to it. He is always happy and is just a very genuine person. He cares and is easy to approach for help. Some very funny moments in class. Good enough that I registered for his second year course.
Really lovely teacher, cares that everyone does well! But, very difficult to understand in class. Exams are fair, and he wants everyone to do well!
Lots of content, but intriguing and amazing lectures. After the 1st class understanding the accent becomes easier to understand.
Such a wonderful man, though you quickly learn he can be a bit confusing and go on tangents during his lectures. His pp's are very clear, and we cover midterm material in the mandatory tutorials. For the final exam, he basically went page by page through the textbook to tell us exactly what we need to know. Love him, very funny.
The best prof ever! A very ethical and a cosmopolitan man, Respects! Super friendly. Go to class and take notes thats all you need for this class to get an A+.
He is a really tough lecturer. His accent makes it hard to understand him in class and he doesn't use the mic efficiently. READ THE TEXTBOOK! as most of his midterms and exams are based on the textbook it is a must! read it and attend lectures for sure!
I like it
Can't understand anything he says, however he is genuinely nice and is passionate about what he's teaching.
His giggle makes going to the lectures worth it. Long readings, but his lectures covers the main points of each reading. Really nice guy who is genuinely interested about the material and his students. Busy prof but always eager to meet and help his students
hes a great teacher but he has an accent ... i would recommend him to others!
He is fantastic prof who is extremely passionate! He is such a joy to be around. Although he has a very thick accent and speaks very fast. Slides are very clear and straight to the point. Mid terms are easy, but very concept based. Course is a bit content heavy, but totally worth it. Would definitely recommend.
Really good prof, sometimes hard to understand, but he's very clear as to what you need to know, and he always emphasizes the important things. He repeats all the important concepts so you understand perfectly, Great man.
Absolutely terrible course to take unless its mandatory. Took the course due to the easy prereq requirements and was appalled at how much work he assigns. His readings take hours to complete every week and he expects you to know specifics on everything. Not a clear lecturer or professor in general. Nice guy himself but steer clear unless mandatory.
He's a great professor he knows what he's doing, if you don't do his readings then don't expect a pass, he's a passionate guy, its really hard for students to understand his lectures due to the accent making it easy to wonder off. Overall if you are looking for an easy mark this isn't the class for you.
Impossible to understand. Knows his stuff but terrible prof
Tough class made tougher by him. He is hard to understand. His powerpoints and long, hard to follow and unclear. He goes off on tangents that you aren't sure are important. Lots of content, study lots! Do the readings they'll help you! Exams and midterms were tough! No feedback given for essay written.
He's a very nice man, funny and friendly. I didn't however find his lectures to be very engaging and had a difficult time following the content at times because of the way it was presented. Fair tests, final was right off the midterms! Overall, fine prof but you have to be willing to teach yourself to an extent.
Excellent and passionate prof. You have to attend lectures, or you won't pass tests. Reading material is barely related to exam material, however, you won't grasp the depth of the lecture material without it. TA's mark everything, if you get a bad grade, discuss it with them. DGD's are easy marks, just show up! Masaeli is always willing to help.
Loved this prof! Although some of the assignments were misplaced and I didn't get my midterms back until after the final. Overall he's really good. Focuses more on the general ideas rather than the specific points in the way he asks questions. Do the readings and review the slides and you'll do fine!
Very passionate professor. He has an accent so you need to listen closely in lectures. He assigns long papers and has high expectations of students to include theoretical frameworks in both DVM1100 and DVM2105. For papers, discuss questions with your TA. Lectures are important, since he says what will be on all exams. Has lecture notes.
He is a very kind and lovable person, but his lectures were occasionally long and dry. The readings helped with understanding but were not mandatory. There was minimal instruction for the term paper which left many of us confused. You will learn a lot in this class, if you pay attention.
This class was definitely not an easy one - but it was one of the most interesting courses I took! As long as you put in the effort, an A is possible. Professor Masaeli is VERY passionate is willing to converse and help his students. Sitting in the front definitely helps with absorbing the content of the lectures! Make sure your term paper is good.
This professor is excellent! Exams are not hard, course materials need you spend time to read and understand. He is very nice and I got A on this course at the end.
I like it but it wasn't what i was looking for. Make sure to highlight for your own information please. And please be advised of the development, globalization, and neoliberalism. He's a hoot hehehehehe
Nice man, but his lectures are painful and confusing. His slides are full of spelling/grammar mistakes and are not logical at all. Ex. He'll put things in a table that do not belong in a table. Do the readings in order to get a better understanding of the concepts - except the readings that are written by him, there's really no point.
I took this class as an elective and loved it! He is very funny and wants to help you succeed. Sit in the front for better understanding. I also didn't do the readings and finished with an A, just make sure to understand. The midterms are straightforward and he even gave us a chance to get bonus points. You need to work hard to do well though
I loved this professor! You can see the passion he has when he's teaching the class and so funny. I do recommend sitting at the front to have a clear understanding and to stay focused because his lectures are heavy.
Prof Masaeli is one of the sweetest profs ever. However, I personally felt this class was slightly unorganized.
I had him first year and although he was a nice guy, he isn't comfortable teaching. His lectures are heavy and quite often many slides are just irrelevant and extra information but demands you study everything. There were 2 midterms and exam with heavy material but as long as you study his slides you're golden as he never used the readings.
Extremely nice professor, though he can be hard to understand at times with his accent Not mandatory to attend class but they are useful. Cover lots of important stuff that his PPTs don't really explain Gives chances for easy extra credit w/ brief 1 page papers Fair amount of work, easy with enough prep Not necessary to buy/read course pack
Very nice man, awful prof. Very hard to understand because of his accent and he gets off topic often which is even more confusing. PowerPoints are confusing and unorganized. Readings definitely help clarify them. Not very clear about what he wants for paper so USE TAs!! Avoid if you can!
Prof Masaeil is a very nice guy. He loves to help his studenTS. Although his class is boring, he give extra credit in class. His coursepack is $20, but is unnecessary for tests and exam. There are two mid term exams all related to his class slides, but final take home exam is not easy, you have to prepare it. Take his class again in winter for 2350
"Please be advised"... Basically a Persian version of Winnie the Pooh. Cute old man who knows his topic well. He covers a lot of content in a short amount of time and sometimes has to rush, so do the readings to keep up. Lots of opportunities to earn marks and succeed, including an early first midterm to help you get used to university. He cares!
Don't bother doing the readings (as long as you go to class) they're long and not very useful in understanding the topics. Gives extra credit and exams/essays are marked fairly easily to keep the average high. Overall a super nice guy, but really confusing and has time management issues.
He is such a kind and passionate prof, classes are interesting and always make for a good laugh. He posts everything on blackboard which really helps to prepare for the midterms. Definitely go see him for questions he is so happy to help out! His class is easy if you put in a little effort.
Everyone gets a great grade but sitting through the lecture is rough. He is overly bubbly and just says whatever comes in to his mind. The guest lectures make him look foolish by comparison and it's really hard to take Masaeli seriously. You'll get a 90 but it's rough.
Professor Masaeli is knowledgeable in his field; however, he's hard to understand in his lectures. If you do manage to make out what he's saying, he simplifies the concepts in the readings/ppts quite well. It's easy to get a good grade if you attend lectures and DGDs. DGDs are helpful. Easy bonus questions too. Overall easy and interesting class
He is full of passion about what he teaches, but unfortunately is kind of hard to understand. His lectures go kind of everywhere, but if you follow the power points that he posts you should be fine. He also gave a lot of opportunities to improve your mark so look out for those.
Sweet man but you can barely understand him. Gives no introduction of common terms he uses which can make it hard to really grasp the meaning of the slides and readings (you need to either have background knowledge in politics or get ready to look up a lot of stuff). Don't take it if you don't have to, trust me.
SUPER SWEET! He gives bonus questions to boost your grades. Super caring, smart.
Thick accent but all the notes are online and attendance is not necessary. We had amazing TAs for my semester but it can vary. Easy course that I would take again. He is a nice man but cannot convey material.
Professor Masaeli is easily one of the kindest, and most caring professors I have ever met. Both courses I have taken with him have been content-heavy, but Masaeli offers simplified explanations of concepts in the lectures - recommend taking notes on what he actually says, rather than copying down slides. One of my favourite professors at uOttawa.
Had Prof Masaeli before for DVM1100. With him again for DVM2110. Again, I believe he is the best professor at the university. He cares about his students, gives them good feedback, and always available after class. Be careful! Attendance is matter! He will give extra credits if you attend the class and willing to answer his question in one-page.
Prof Masaeli is willing to help you after class if you go to his office. His exams are all based on the class slides. Take good notes in class and write good short answer for extra credit, you will get an A plus!
Way too much information on his slides... he speaks quite fast so sometimes you miss things. Be prepared to read 50+ pages per class. Very passionate, likes when you ask questions
Really nice guy but not a standout prof. The midterm was all multiple choice and was loaded with spelling errors, making it challenging to read, and was based on minute details from his lectures. Memorization is more important than understanding for him, and the readings are a repeat of the lectures but help solidify concepts. Not the best.
do not take this as an elective!!!! you will regret it especially if you dont have a background in politics
Tests are completely multiple choice, and his questions are incredibly specific. However in class he only gives brief explanations of each topic. If memorizing 100+ pages for a test isn't your thing (which isn't for most social science students) avoid his classes.
He is a very nice man, but get ready to not understand half the things he says. Will tell you "I'll get to that" or "I'll tell you later" when asking questions during a lecture unfortunately, many times questions AREN'T answered unless you take time to message the TA's or visit his office hours.
Very difficult to understand his lecture due to heavy accent, unorganized slides and grammar mistakes. The prof doesn't connect what he teaches in class with what he asks in exam sheets, you really need to read through the book and catch the minute details if you want to get a idea of what is in the exam. He sure knows a lot but doesn't teach well.
bad lectures, don't understand anything, doesn't explain anything well or properly answer questions. I had to drop his class because it was lowering my GPA so much. do not take this class! I do not know anyone who has had a good experience with him. Readings are unorganized just like the class and his slides. Class is all bs anyways.
Somewhat difficult to understand, do the readings, they explain everything much better than he does in lectures. There are 3 tests, 2 are difficult multiple choice, questions are small details from the slides or something he said. The last test is short answer questions. Offers extra credit questions in class.
Overall a passionate teacher that knows the course material very well. Be prepared for a lot of readings that help understand his lectures in class more. Likes when you asks questions and get involved with class lectures. Honestly, one of my favourite professors. Listen when he speaks, prior knowledge in some sort of politics helps a lot too.
This class was a headache, but it was due to a lack of TA's. If he says any of the tests are multiple choice, drop the class because it's a gamble doing well whether you studied or not. Otherwise, short answer tests and take home finals are marked easy. He does care, but if there aren't enough TA's for the class, he will always be stressed.
Such a good teacher, but hard to understand sometimes. Do the reading before class and take notes. He doesn't follow exactly with the powerpoint which is nice so it is engaging.
lots of work. Heavy lectures. Goodluck.
good class
He is very knowledgeable about the subject and cares about his students. Not only teaches material but also tells you about his personal opinions which is interesting. Exams are short answer/essay questions and you get good feedback on your exams. Readings are a must if you want an A.
Professor Mahmoud is an amazing professor. He loves what he does and it reflects in everything around him. He makes learning fun, encourages his students to think critically as well as outside the box and I definitely recommend this class to others.
So hard to understand, lectures and slides are unorganized with so many grammatical errors. Had to drop the course because I took this as an elective and it was bringing down my gpa too much. He seems like a nice guy but doesn't really like when you ask questions or clarification. Gave no information as to what to know, or even the layout for exams
I think he gets a bad rap, because I enjoyed this course and thought he conveyed the material just fine. Don't skip readings because they'll more than likely be on exams, and participate in class and (especially) DGDs for easy marks. Really approachable prof that likes to help students.
hard to understand but a really nice guy, genuinely cares about the class. study hard and listen to his tips in class about what's on the exam
lots of paper need to read and remember
Super nice prof. Basically told us throughout the semester exactly what would on our midterms so i wasnt that surprised when i got a 95 on the first one. Interesting lectures although he does have a thick accent so you need to listen carefully. He wrote the textbook and says its necessary but i never used it
A really nice guy and is passionate about what he does. Sometimes things can get lost in translation as there are usually grammatical errors or errors in general on the slides and the tests. He lets you know which units to study and the DGD's are really helpful. The material is kind of all over the place but if you do the reading, it is easier.
Masaeli is a great guy who cares about his students. Textbook is good for specifics but is not necessary, all midterms and exam are based on his slides. It's good to go to class as he gives good information about assignments and tests. Overall a really great professor.
Lectures are full of content and super theoretical at times. Prof can be a little hard to follow, but really nice, warm guy who knows his stuff. Can easily be a really interesting class if you put in a little bit of effort.
This class was one of the harder classes I took in first year but really worth it. The exams are pretty difficult unless you really know the material. There are DGD's that help boost your mark as long as you show up and participate. The lectures can be a little fast paced but he posts the powerpoints beforehand, just be sure to take notes still.
HE IS AMAZING! Not going to lie, you need to attend his lectures. They are heavy but super easy to follow and understand. He has light humour and cares for all questions. He explains things clearly and is very passionate about his learning. only 2 midterms and exam however if he notices attendance is low he will give the people attending extra cred
One of my absolute favourite professors at the University of Ottawa! He gives very clear expectations for exams, midterms, etc. As long as you have the slides you can succeed in his courses. Attending lectures is useful because he will say "this will be on the exam" or "remember this for the exam". Filmed lectures when he was unavailable to teach
instructions are not clear for anything. midterms and the final exam did not have clear instructions at all. slides were unorganized and he spoke too quickly to understand what he said/the content for the lecture.
Prof. Masaeli is super passionate about what he teaches and keeps us interested and engaged during the lectures. He sometimes offers extra credit which can boost your final grade a bit. He has a great personality and teaching style... I would definitely take another course with him!
A very passionate lecturer. If you don't pay attention, the tests will be very difficult. Grading was based on 1 multiple choice test, one short and long answer test, a take-home exam that consisted of 2 essay length questions, and participation in discussion groups.
Great prof, really passionate about the material he's teaching. He wrote the textbook and is an expert in his field, which is really cool for students who care a lot about international development. Easy enough course, the lecture slides sum up the readings really well.
Definitely my easiest class of the semester. The first midterm is tough but there are bonus assignments throughout the term that can mean up to 4 extra marks for your lowest midterm mark. The discussion groups is marked only on attendance so you don't even have to participate to get an A. Prof Masaeli is a really nice guy and makes the class laugh.
Sorta difficult to understand but pretty easy class. Very knowledgable and passionate but often unclear and not interesting. Midterms were not hard, take-home exam was graded much harder, start it early. Discussion groups are free marks. Go to class and remember, the TEXTBOOK IS YOUR FRIEND!!
Readings might be much better and helpful than lectures he taught. Tasks are based on small details. Difficult to understand. Not really accessible outside of class.
Lectures can get a little much, but if you pay attention the exams are SO easy. Very clear criteria for what he expects on tests. Final exam was a paper so that's great too. He's very passionate and it makes his material interesting!
I learned much more from readings and assignments than from the lectures. His presentations were often unclear and very one-sided. He's very critical of mainstream development and didn't give us much room to analyze other perspectives and form our own opinions. Also, AVOID HIM if you need academic accommodations. Working with him was a headache.
Literally my favourite Prof yet! I had him for DV1100 in first year and finished off with 92. He is a very passionate prof with very interesting lectures.
