He teaches vey well
No Comments
Questions unclear and not well worded
Made me hate economics.
Brilliant teacher, knows much about the subject. A litle hard for beginers
So dry and boring it is friggin painful
fair teacher, a little stingy on his office hours
my first 2 years, he sucked. However he is great if your an upper year student.
Turtle, Turtle. He says uhh but all throaty like. BORING
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Just the sound of he voice wants to make me cringe. His organizational skills are hillarious ( just a little obsessed)even though his class is boring. He has no fashion sense.

Thinks students are stupid for asking relevant questions.
Not the bad prof everyone makes him out to be. If you go to class you will do well as most of the assignments etc.. were right out of his lectures. Kind of fun to just listen to his examples and stories of Oxford :D
Uses the pretence of teaching linear programming to plot a star chart back to his home planet (ruled by the great Chiang).... ooooo yip yip, un hunh, un hunh.
His lectures are kinda dry and boring but I learn stuff.
He is the worst prof i've ever met. His classes were extramly boring and he likes to insult students whenever he gets the chance. Not many people like him even his fellow profs.
never takin a class with u again for sure
very good prof
not clear in delivery, hard marker
He can YELL at you
this dude should not be allow to teach
I am poor with Math. Arvin was willing to help me during office hours to understand what he was teaching. He expects work, but is willing to help people who are willing to work.
Should stick to Facism. Might be better suited teaching south of the border.
not very lively but very clear and precise
brutal
Avoid this man at all costs!!! And if you can't, at least always sit as close as you can if you want to at least try to hear what he's saying...just...don't do it. His examples are rarely relevent to any application you will have to do with quizzes, assignments, etc. He's smart but just not a good prof.
Everytime I go to this class, all I think about is WHY DOESN'T GOD JUST KILL ME RIGHT THERE. I know he is really smart, but there is no need to BRAG ABOUT IT. MAN!!! THERE IS NO WAY THEY TAUGHT YOU HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE IN 6TH GRADE. "SO DO YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND!? YES? NO? MAY BE? we can change it to boring, smartbooty, anything. It will work anyway".
assignment questions are even more confusing than his lectures, his cartoon like appearance and ridiculous voice can be very distracting
Prof Mak Arvin is oneof the very structured professors in Trent University. These who do not like him should just not study economics or math..they do not have the capacity to handle it and the most stupid thing is to blame it on the professor.Noone has learned to differentiate in 6th grade but some cannot learn it even in 3rd year undergrad..
Very structured, available and helpful. If you can't handle math and economics assignments or don't feel like attending every class then don't take his courses. If you're a dedicated student you'll do well.
An arrogant do-do head plain and simple.
The worst teacher I had while at Trent. Teaching doesn;t seem to suit him. He should consider a career change
Uses intimidation tactics to find out who is serious about the class. Not helpful to non-math students & harps on 225 notes, which I took 2 years ago. Got a decent mark, but not a fun class @ all. Thank God it's over!
the arvinator
Aloof, arrogant and incompetent. One of Trent's worst. He just can't seem to teach. I know it sounds unbelievable, but take in few lectures and you will see what I mean. It's a shame because many that should go on to grad school, will not because of incompetent profs like this one.
Poor use of intimidation and lack of consideration for the needs of foreign or esl students.
this guy is a complete moron. he talks too fast and he mumbles. says dont worry about text book but then later will tell u to read it. not helpful at all for non-math students. he wont give you a straight answer to a lot of your questions as well. nice enough guy, but not ment to be a teacher. avoid this prof if at all possible!
I went to go pick up an assignment on my own time during reading week. He said: "As you can see, I'm eating my lunch. Come back next week" Rude and arrogant! AVOID!!!!!!
He is helpful as long as you visit him during office hours. He teaches his courses very fast and straightforward.
He teaches proficiently. The people whining on here probably skipped lectures, or didn't bother going to his office hours. He's a smart man and, while he's not the clearest speaker, isn't incomprehensible. Quit crying and try doing work instead of blaming the prof.
Economics makes me want to kill myself. Really. He's a smart Prof, and he'll make sure you know it. He'll also make sure that you should be just as knowledgable because hell, he mastered differentiation when he was 13 so if you're confused you're obviously incompetent.
why this guy is teaching is beyond me. If this is all Trent an find for an upper year prof this program is in trouble. He wants guys to go to his office hours because he's as *** as a French horn
Like a robot.
Best teacher I ever had. The subject itself is difficult, that's why it's only required for the honours program. You don't take honours because it sounds fancy, you take it to get into grad school. If you couldn't handle this course with this amazing prof then you won't be able to handle grad school, trust me. He's funny too, smart people jokes tho
I was a non-math student until I took his class which influenced me to study rigorous mathematics. I'm glad I took his class. OH, make sure you pay attention to the concepts he talks about, they can help you succeed.
The hardest "A" grade I've gotten so far at Trent. This guy marks very very tough. I found summer was brutal with him for 6 weeks. I would imagine students taking him in the Winter for 3 months is gonna cry...you gotta work hard for this class.
Thankfully I only had him for one class and was well into my studies at the time. I am now a practicing economist with an MA in economics and fully owe that to Trent. I have tutored a number of his first year students and can say without doubt that had I taken his class in my first year I would be laying bricks today. Don't get discouraged!
this teacher is relaly bad
He over complicates the material he teaches. I learned like 2 months worth of work in one weekend using google and youtube. Though watch out, what he teaches is simple but when it comes to assignments and exams, it's really tuff, there'r always be an extra step that he did not teach and that you will have to figure out on your own.
Heès a good prfessor, you have to learn to apprecoate the way he teaches. Math Econ. Isnèt supposed to be a fun time. Even at the 200 and 300 level he prepare you for grad school.
Very intelligent man, however Dr. Arvin lacks certain social abilities. He is extremely thorough in his explanations, and examples. You need to attend all lectures and pay attention at all times!
He is oviously a smart guy. He is not approachable and people are scared to ask questions. He is well structured and organized but takes it a little too far. Has potential but doesnt like to make time. Good but dissapointing prof, makes things seem hard but if you put time into assignments you can get over 95 in his course
Believe it or not, he does care about his students. I bombed his final, yet my mark only suffered a small percentage of what it should.
Very arrogant and cold but a very good teacher. Definatley knows his stuff however he thinks there is such a thing as a stupid question so it can be a bit intimidating to ask him for help at times. However he explains the material very well and once you show up for his class you should be fine
Smart guy!!!
Hands down the smartest prof at Trent. For all the negative reviews, this is university people! Dr. Arvin teaches how one would expect a Yale, Harvard, or Oxford professor to teach. If you dont like his style, try college. Great Prof!
Makes concepts real easy
He is the Oracle of the Academia world! He has far exceeded Mr. Changs book. You cannot climb any higher in the Academia world than him. The person who just stood up and left the lecture, I will remember his face. "I am aborting the lecture!" "I am starting to get a headace from all this banging" We will finish the lecture exactly 4:59:40 sec P.M
quizzes assignments and final exam are freakin hard. his lectures are boring and hard to approach.
Hard to follow, didn't use actual examples in class (preferred leaving all equations in algebraic format), and condescending towards students.
Very arrogant and never enjoyed any of his class
Terrible
My favourite prof at Trent. He brings econ department to the whole new level. He can deliver very complex concepts in an easy and understandable way as long as you listen to him and attend lectures. Even though he seems rude sometimes, he helped me a lot when I needed advise on graduate school. As long as you respect him, he is the best!
Smart guy and knows his stuff, but he comes off as rude and arrogant if you're having trouble learning. Also he rarely gave us any word problems, everything he taught was in the simplest algebraic form. Exam time extra steps we were not taught! He also likes bashing Canada's economic policies and praising the US which I found quite annoying.
He definitely knows his stuff and is really good at explaining concepts in an easy way (but monotonous). however he was condescending to students who struggled or didn't have a math background and wrote on the blackboard instead of having slides and posting them online which was harder to keep up with and left you screwed if you couldn't make class
Professor Arvin is a greatly misunderstood talent at Trent. His devotion and intelligence are often mistaken for him being pretentious and cocky. If you make an effort, he will go far beyond the call of duty, however make little effort and he will show little interest. An interesting man to talk to, his research is well accredited outside of Trent
Arvin is a smartest professor I have seen in Trent. He is good at his stuff and knowledge. His class is very hard, but is also useful for students. NIce guy.
Not a very good professor. Do not recommend his course!! Doesn't make any slides or post notes online everything is spoken aloud aside from graphs that he draws. Hard to learn material from him. If you can take this course in the summer with another prof or at another time with any other prof I would recommend you do so.
This guy is probably the best Professor at Trent. He teaches some hard courses and will not baby you. You need to work hard in his class and attend class diligently but I've easily learned the most listening to him for 2 hours.
VERY boring to listen to. He is monotone, not interesting, and extremely hard to focus on. Despite this, he is very knowledgable and knows his stuff. Would not take his class again just because he makes the class boring.
Well structured and thorough lectures. He repeats the key points more than once. Maybe not the most personable, but, he is not there to coddle his students. He does have a sense of humor if you watch for it. I would take his class again. (If I pass this one!!!)
Mark is the type of person that teaches what he is intended to teach and rarely shows his non-professor side to the class, at least in my first year course with him. If your fine with a prof that comes to lecture to teach rather than to entertain you, after all this is a university, then you should be fine with him.
Tooo Boring
To pass the course going to lectures was MANDATORY, the assignments are pretty easy if you read the textbook.
Should be one of the best professors at Trent particularly if you are economic students. Lectures are straightforward and necessary to attend. Assignments are actually hard, group work recommended. All things you learn from his math econ are necessary to know for upper years micro. macro as well as master level.
Knowledgeable, clear, and professional professor. His class notes were written entirely by hand on the board, hence attendance mandatory. Comes off standoffish in class but is very approachable if you have questions about the material after lecture. When MyEconLab graded graphing work unfairly, he reviewed it and adjusted my grade accordingly.
Really difficult. But he is a great teacher.
So boring and condescending
On the surface, Dr. Arvin has likely the hardest classes for anybody who struggles with Math. That being said, his handwritten notes forced me to sit front and center and actually pay attention. I learned more material from his classes than many others in my time at Trent. Could I do any of the math? No. But only because I'm bad at math.
Not the most friendly but makes up for it through organization. Crazy smart
worst ECON prof ever
Dr. Arvin is a hard prof in general. He is not very easy to ask for help and doesn't seem to actually care if his students pass or not. He calls "stupid" if we don't understand and sends us to academic skills instead of taking the time to help us understand the material
The guy is a genius and he clearly knows the material but he is more worried about letting you know he is the smartest person in the room than actually helping you. He does not care if you pass or fail. If you need his help with anything you might as well just drop the class. His exam was nearly impossible and the practice exam he gave was useless
Dr. Arvin on the surface appears like he doesnt care about student success. If you ask him for help regarding the course content, he will help. The issue for most of my peers in ECON2250 is that they lacked basic math skills. He is unwilling to re-teach each student highschool math. Overall he is a great prof if you show up and actually listen.
Most likely the most organized person I've ever met, encyclopedic knowledge of mathematics and economics, and very personable outside of class. Arvin is a tough grader, thorough lecturer, and as others have noted, he does not care if you pass or fail - and that's the beauty of his pedagogic approach. If you work hard, he will meet you halfway.
One of the most organized professors I've ever had. Lectures are engaging, and he very clearly knows what he's talking about.
He is boring and keeps complaining that students email him to ask questions. He is not willing to answer questions. he seems to hate teaching.
His handwritten notes made remote learning so much easier on the students. He thoroughly explains the topics and gives you lots of example to help you understand. I wish a lot more professors took his approach to remote learning.
He is not approachable and rude. Will not reply to your emails. His class is boring.
Mak is a uncaring and an uninspiring prof. Rude responses to emails, very little correspondence, and seems to hate his job and his students. Would never recommend him to anyone.
He is not willing to answer questions. He just posts lecture videos. He tells us not to email him. His final exam is worded weirdly. A lot of misspelled words looks like he edited the exam and did not review the exam. Very unprofessional
The best prof in ECON. Very detailed, you won't need to ask questions. Also extremely hard, but gives you the tools in his lectures/videos to succeed. He walks you through similar problems that he asks on tests. That being said hes still super hard, but at least I learned something. First year he alone inspired me to switch into ECON from business.
Used pre recorded lectures from the year before
horrible the man isnt nice you cant go for help from him
He refuses to acknowledge emails written to him about course work during this pandemic, he continuously belittles his students in the emails he sends to the class, all around very unhelpful.
Worst prof ever. Rude, condescending and his tests are immensely difficult.
This Professor failed to assist me when a family member had health issues! I emailed him, provided valid documentation, visted office hours, and still submitted course work. I had to involve the office to get him to GRADE MY WORK! Arrogant, uncaring, and dismissive, he represents the poorest parts of academia! Document your semester with this prof!
