Man is a TA for Math 151. He is sometimes hard to understand, but genuinely cares about the students. I learned much more from Man's small group sessions than the lectures with the professor. Man works however many problems students ask him to & is helpful if you go into his office hours. Attend the small group sessions so you get 100% on homework
I took math 166(calc II) with him.He knows the subject well. Quizzes and exams reflected what was taught in the class. Helpful outside the class too.Has an accent but understandable. Will take class again.
Sometimes hard to understand him with his accent. He cares that you understand what he is teaching though. A grader is used, he doesn't grade the homework, quizzes, etc himself.
He's not actually a prof, he's a grad student. As such, he's EXTREMELY helpful, sometimes to a fault. When he does example problems on the board, he doesn't move on until EVERYBODY in the class understands it. (he will come over to your desk and walk you through it one-on-one). LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT! Glad i had him for diff eq :)
I have no idea how im understanding this class but i am. He uses Great analogy and his exams are easy besides that he usually does 2 projects which were really simple too. He's not a professor but he grades papers and exams fast and he's very understanding as a professor. Be attentive in class and answer questions and you will get an A
Man Basnet is a great teacher. If you don't understand something, go visit him, and he will explain everything in full.
Man is the man! He knows exactly how to teach students and very well. His accent is not hard to understand, and he pushes students to learn the material without making them feel overwhelmed. He is dedicated to the students and loves when students come to his office hours.
The Best math teacher I've ever had. He actually care about his students and helps you succeed.
Man really cares about your grade and if you understand. He explains everything very well. If you show you want to learn and go to his office hours, he will make sure you do your best. He gets legitimately upset if you don't do well, like it's a personal attack on how well he did his job and he will make sure you do better.
I only did well in this class because he was so willing to help. He gets upset with students that don't seek help from him during his office hours. He calls himself "a free tutor" because he has 10+ hours that he allows students to come in for help. Calc II is difficult, but when effort is put forth (with Basnet) it seems easy.
Amazing professor, helps anytime. He also has office hours during weekends and hold all sorts of reviews and help sessions. Hardworking and dedicated professor.
Not that great of a lecturer, but always willing to meet with you one on one and help. He was in his office at least 6 hours a day and always had his door open. Calculus 2 was great!
He was my favorite teacher this semester. Very hopeful and was always there to answer questions. teaches you the subject so you understand why and not just what the answer is.
Great lecturer, his office is always open. recommend!
Man really cares about how well you do. He isn't out to get you like some professors. He's full of little jokes that keep lectures interesting. He asked us for feedback, and he actually listened! (Like uploading lecture notes and answer keys, slowing down for questions in lecture, etc). Go to lecture, clicker points will save your grade!
My favorite professor so far in college.
I. Hate. Math Hate it. it sucks but this dude made it fun for me. I went to his class everyday excited because I had MAN BASNET. it's a shame that i may never take another math class because I'm a history major, because I'd love to take a couple others with him!
Took Calc II with him and let me tell you, he is by far the best professor in the mathematics department. Clear cut and at times down right hilarious. If you want to pass and possibly have a decent time doing so, get Man. What else can I say, hes THE Man.
Like his name, he is the man! Show up to class or you won't pass. He is always there if you need help and will help you! Would take again if I could. Best math prof by far!
he is good
You do get weekly homework and it does take time but it's a huge part of your grade so if you do that you will get a decent grade. A lot of clicker points are given out each day but prepare you well for the exams. He is very helpful if you have any questions about any material and cares about you as a student.
Great math teacher. Really cares about the students and tailors lessons to what they need or ask for. Very helpful in office hours. Does a bunch of examples. Explains theorems rather than just writing them down. Then does an example with the theorem/method. Overall awesome professor.
Very nice guy who loves what he does. It's hard to like a math teacher, but he is a rare one. Very kind and understanding to any problems you may face. Helpful. Very few people like math though so it is easy to get frustrated at times.
I'm really glad that I was his student this past semester. He is so helpful and kind. I'm happy that he is my professor at Calc II next semester.
He has an Indian accent that can be difficult to understand at times but he explains the concepts very clearly. Be prepared for tough clicker questions.
I took Calc I in high school, and I learned here that i really didn't understand anything. Man writes his math down on a projector, which makes it extremely easy to follow. If you love having examples in order to learn, he is the professor for you.
Best math professor I have ever had. He is hilarious and very good at teaching.
Very good Calc 2 professor. His lectures are very clear and he explains topics very well. This is a really tough class but he handles the material well and slows down the pace of the class when it gets to the really hard topics. He encourages people to ask questions and will always help you understand
He is nice guy, and funny, keeps the atmosphere light. That being said he can be quite hard to understand at times, and I feel he could prepare for the lectures a little better. The test are graded very tough, the class average was an F on all 3 exams so far and aren't curved. He says final course grades will be curved, how much I don't know yet.
Man is the man! True, he may be a bit hard to understand at times, and have messy handwriting, but he understands math. Not only that, he'll help you understand math, because he mixes theory and problems to great effect. Show up every day ready for easy clicker points, and soak in the math knowledge, because Man is there to help you learn.
Man was a great Diff Eq professor. He really has a passion for teaching and helping students learn, and it shows. He takes into account what students say they need help with and he covers that more in depth in lectures. He does an exceptional job of mixing theory with relevant examples, and I'd highly recommend.
Dr Basnet is one of the best math professors I have ever seen. Very helpful, easy to understand and jolly. Even if you don't understand something in his class, if you go to his office hours, he will help you a lot. I want to take my other classes with him as well. 10/10
funny
Lectures were easy to follow. Homework was assigned regularly and not bad. Make sure you read the book and take time to learn the material. Go to class and bring your clicker! (Bonus clicker points on some days) Tests/Quizzes were easy if you put in time and effort to learn material (read book and ask for help if needed). Easily my favorite course!
Man is the man!!!! He is one of my favorite teachers here at Iowa State! He really cares about each student and wants people to succeed. Although his classes still hold difficulty he makes it easy to learn/understand.
While attendance isn't mandatory, a great percent of your grade is from in-class clicker-questions. Go to lectures, because Man's class moves fast, and he usually drops hints of what you'll specifically need for the test. Hard class, but great teacher, and he is wonderful with one-on-one help as well. Tests were hard, and the final was impossible.
Man is probably the best mathematics teacher at ISU, but that doesn't mean he's easy. Tests are hard, but if you go to lectures, you'll understand them well. Non-mandatory class, but you'll miss clicker-question credit. Trust me, you'll need every bit of credit. Man's the man, and is great help one-on-one as well if you're confused about anything.
It was not a very hard class. Couldn't understand him very well so I learned most of the material through the textbook. Recitations are helpful and he is helpful during office hours
Just terrible
I would not suggest taking him. The class was very easy itself but he just made it a lot more difficult. He said that you should do 8 hrs of homework a night all online. He didn't teach in lecture but he takes attendance. I feel like this class should have just been online.
He is a terrible professor. The lectures are useless and impossible to follow. He can be quite inconsiderate when asking about office hours as he holds very little hours.
You have a small group project every week in recitation, then you will have a lecture over the material on the project. Man is a good lecturer, but his lectures aren't that organized. He has an accent, but it isn't very heavy. Recitations are mandatory, but lectures are not. I would not recommend skipping them.
I could never understand him and I felt like the lectures were completely pointless and did not help. I only went to get top hat codes and answers otherwise I'd work on homework during it.
Awesome Professor and makes class funny and interesting. Throws in witty humor throughout class. Usually homework comes from the recitation.
Great class. Great professor!
Prof Basnet is a great lecturer, keeps it fun and light hearted. He is good at making complex subjects easy. If you attend lecture ad recitation and do your homework you will do well. Grading relies a lot on your TA and the in class group projects as well as tophat and then exams (which are worth 600 points) He is pretty generous with curves though
Man is the man to get you through calculus. Had him for both 1 and 2. As long as you do decently well on the tests, you'll get an A in the class. Most reasonable professor you'll find in college. Take his class every chance you get.
Dr Basnet is my favorite math professor. The best. Hilarious, inspirational, and easy to understand. I took Calculus II and Diff eq with him. Classy Man.
Love this guy! Arguably the best math teacher in the department. Tests are pretty easy and Top hat is worth 15% of your grade and most of the time you can work with the people around you. Goes pretty fast but he is easy to understand and works through tons of examples and has multiple problems through top hat in class. Definitely get this Man!!
All of the HW is done through a program called ALEKS, that's where you do most of the learning. Basnet is very difficult to understand in class and only does example problems. He requires attendance, taken through TopHat. The exams are usually 15 problems long and aren't too difficult. Recitation is the only part of class that I get any benefit.
The professor himself is wonderful but the lectures offered no new information. All teaching was done by an online math program which had homework problems on it. Requires lots of time to complete all homework but lectures are pointless besides Tophat questions which are graded on correctness and participation. Tests are easy
I enjoyed the professor, but he is not great lecturing, so I often worked on homework in lecture, but he is really helpful in office hours. The amount of homework for this class is ridiculous though. You have about 24 topics each with 5 questions you have to get right for each topic in a row every week- That's 120 problems per week at least.
Goes fast through the material if you do not tell him not to. He genuinely cares about the students and how you learn. Does Tophat questions which can be difficult but he often gives advice which almost gives the answers.
Man is an awesome guy with a great sense of humor. Top Hat is worth 15% of the overall grade so even though he says lectures are optional, you really should go to class! Tests are fair and questions are very similar to examples he went over in class and during review.
Man is the man. He came to class prepared every day and was timely about letting students know if he was going to be out. He went a little fast through the material, but it never felt like he skimmed over things that should have had more time dedicated to them. Not to mention he's hilarious in lectures and is enthusiastic about teaching. Great guy.
He has a thick accent that is a little distracting at first but you can understand him well as long as you go to class. He is a great professor, probably the best calc prof at Iowa State. Very knowledgeable and his lectures are very helpful. He has a funny side that comes out during most classes.
First couple of months, professor wasn't prepared. A lot of homework question where you have to learn by yourselves. Irrelevant lectures, only go for top hat. A lot of extra credits for homework. Go to TA's office they are your Savior. Exams are simple if you know how to do the homework if you don't than. Do Group Projects In Advance it'll help you
The course is basically all on ALEKS and it's a lot of work. His lectures are him showing how to do the problems/topics that people in the class are having trouble with and Top Hat questions. The tests are not too hard if you thoroughly review the material, the TAs go easy on grading your work if you can show that you know what you are doing.
One of the best math teachers I've had. Part of that is bc the Calc series was brutal. He's very kind and understands where students get hung up and elaborates. Brings a very good energy to the room every morning and always makes things way simpler than they seem at first glance. If you are taking Diff Eq, take it with him. He's a good prof
Man Basnet is the man!!!!! This legend over here cares more about your education than you ever will. This message is brought to you by the announcement team.
Dr. Basnet is awesome, he has a great energy and cares about students learning the material. I can't recommend him enough for diff eq, and I can only guess he's just as good in other classes as well.
Legend. He is the M A N. He really cares about his student. Funny and flexible. Great dude overall. Explains content really well, hell also reach out if he thinks youre weak in something which is amazing and non existent in college professors. Take him and just learn from him. If your taking calc just dont skip cuz youll defo fail
Diff Eq is easier than Calculus! Show up for TopHat points and go to his office hours if you're struggling. He wants to understand the material and succeed in the class. In addition, he has extra credit in class once in a while, so always go to class. His handwriting is hard to read at times, and he does have an accent, but he will clarify anything
Did an amazing job teaching it online. Listened to students' feedback to try and fix any problem anyone had.
Basnet is one of my favorite professors at ISU. He wants you to learn and as long as he sees you giving effort, he'll give you a good grade. He tries his best to truly teach you the material and wants you to have a good understanding. If the whole class struggles on something, he'll take responsibility. TAs were awesome as well.
Man is a very rude professor that makes his exams very difficult. He has a very condescending attitude with the students and likes to call us young and stupid. Exams are difficult as well as difficult to prepare for. Avoid him and take Professor Butler's course.
Man did a good job of teaching this Data Science class. The beginning of the class was quite hard and confusing for coding beginners, as the basics were not gone through very well. As the semester went on the class became easier, and Man and his TA's were always glad to help on labs and homework.
This course required a lot of work, but Dr. Basnet really cared about our learning and wanted to help us be successful.
I enjoyed this class. I took it online and asynchronously, and would skip through the lectures as needed. (However if you do not already know Python the lectures might be more necessary). The labs were a bit annoying (especially on the weeks homework were due) but none of them were too bad. Overall nice professor and interesting class.
Great professor, gives lots of extra credit, and post most of the answers in labs and SI groups. Homework takes a while, but there are only one or two assignments every week.
Dr. Basnet was pretty hard to understand at first but as the semester went on it became easier. He teaches the concepts but if you want to understand them you will have to reinforce them by yourself. He does Tophat so you technically don't have to be in class but he practically gives you the answer if you do attend class. Overall simply fine.
Very interesting class, just wished we would've moved a bit faster after the first part of the semester. He will answer all of your questions the best he can, and gives you good foundation for data science. But he is very lazy, won't help in labs and HWs, luckily I had good TAs, and sometimes just cancels lectures for no reason.
I really like this man, almost as much as he likes big bracket. He is a nice guy and if you make the effort to get help from him, he will show that he cares. Unhappy with your exam grade? Make an appointment and he will go over the test with you and regrade it. Most likely you will get a bit back. DifEq is hard, Man makes it no harder than it needs
This is his first year teaching a python course and it's apparent. I do not recommend taking MIS 307 with him. It is impossible to learn the way he teaches. It's awful.
This is the first year Professor Basnet is teaching this course and python classes in general and you can tell. He is somewhat hard to understand and the lectures are incredibly long and boring and make absolutely no sense. There are 2 exams and 1 final and the first exam was somewhat difficult but he thought it was too easy so wish us good luck.
I love this professor. He was so understanding and had very structured lectures. This was my first math class in person since covid, and thankfully it was one of the best math classes I've had here.
Professor Man Basnet is the MAN. He's a good teacher who actually cares about his students and their understanding of the material. He's very clear about what he wants from you and will give you opportunities to make things up throughout the semester. Took this class with a different prof and got an F, took it with him and got an A. He's the best.
His lectures involve him going through and just reading the notes he made. The class itself was relatively easy. Assignments every week are 5 coding problems. He does TopHats. Exam length was nearly impossible to complete with the time given. (Hopefully he changes this). He did drop a few assignments because people did really bad on the exams.
I love Professor Basnet. Many students complain about their failures in the class and blame his teaching, but I am sitting in his class currently writing this review, and I am surrounded by a classroom full of students staring at their phones playing chess, scrolling through TikTok, and doing everything except learning. He is a fantastic professor.
Man is honestly a pretty good teacher when it comes to coding. Many people in the class complain about how he is not a good teacher, or hard to understand but compared to other coding professors at isu he is amazing. His setup is really good.
Professor Basnet was very responsive and helped answer any questions I had throughout the semester. He was encouraging and willing to help me learn, even if my work wasn't perfect. The class was code heavy, but he would give points if you showed you made an effort to learn it. We also incorporate AI, which was very helpful as well.
He is incredibly funny. I strongly recommend anyone who is going to take MIS 207 to take it with Man. He is the MAN. The homework is extremely difficult, but he is willing to help and provide hints. The grader is also incredibly forgiving. In my case, he dropped two labs and a homework.
He would cancel class a lot and for a core major class it's frustrating since I paid for the in-person education. Towards the end of the semester he stopped doing the labs in class and gave us very little time to finish them. The exam reviews as well were not very helpful as he created word cloud bubbles of the vocab. Didn't learn much in class
Best MIS professor at ISU. Some people don't like him but you won't find a better MIS professor. His homework is bi-weekly, and he has in-class labs on Fridays. A few tophats per class but he always opens them back up before exams.
I took MIS 2070 with Man Basnet and strongly recommend him to anyone looking to take MIS 3070. The homework takes a long time, but he and the TA are more than willing to assist with it. Exams are extremely difficult, but he allows a cheat sheet.
