It's one of those classes I don't mind getting up for! She does a great job teaching the material.
she makes a lot of mistakes
she takes attendence everyday! I think how you do in this class depends on when you have it and if you like art. Make sure to take notes and read the book for the tests. She does offer extra credit though so its not too bad.
Great teacher who makes learning about dead artists fun. She is extremely knowledgeable about her subject. A good A if you take notes. Takes attendance everyday, four chapter tests, one mandatory report, and no final or midterm exams.
Boring and spacey teacher. Not clear and not interesting. Talks about political views too much. I didnt like her at all b/c I dont like art, didnt suck up, and am not a Liberal.
Boring, eccentric, and annoying, but her class is easy. Except for the attendance part; you can't miss more than four and the class is so boring and far away that that's sort of hard to do. Her tests are easy-you don't even have to take notes-and she gives lots of extra credit. Not helpful at all.
Class was okay... I learned a lot about art! She was REALLY slack about taking attendance. I missed a test b/c i overslept and she let me take it w/ no questions asked. I would recommend her overall... shes very eccentric and seems kinda spacey, but shes funny
I really liked her as a teacher. She was very clear about the material and I learned a lot. Although I thought I learned a lot and knew the material the test were very specific so I would study extra hard.
definitely spacy, but made the class interesting. she takes attendance, but doesnt really check it. take good notes and read the book, and youll get an A
lectures are boring, recommend sitting on the front row so that u don't fall asleep and that u get out of the class quickly when it ends. tests are ok. sometimes easy, review secession class before, "tells" u everything on the test. TONS of extra credit opportunities. easy A! ( don't bother w/ the book, waste of money)
I love this lady.. i agree with others that sometimes its hard to stay awake, but she makes what we learn fun bc she tells stories along with the lesson. Shes kinda loopy but that just makes the class that much more interesting.. what will she say next? i def. recommend her!
i loved this woman, and i'm an intl studies/intl business major - she made me consider switching to an art major during this class. very easy, as long as you go to the review sessions and study the study guides she gives you (though they're 11 pages long...) - still, it's fairly basic stuff, or it's just plain interesting.
She is a wonderful teacher! She makes art interesting and her tests are extremely easy (multiple choice) and her final is not cumulative. TAKE HER! She gives tons of extra credit! The only downside is that she takes attendance and the it is far far away.
Mana is a really funny lady. Her first 2 tests are really easy, and then the last 2 are hard. She passes around a sheet for attendence, so you can get someone to sign you in. She is down to earth and is leniant on making up missed tests! Good class overall.
She is a funny lady! So amusing. Full of one liners. She makes learning about art interesting. It is a great class, although the tests have their difficult times. It is important to do extra credit because it lifts your grade majorly! takes notes or at least pay attention and you will do fine! Very interesting!
First day of class she said she knows we're not art majors and just need the credit. Very cool lady. Wants you to appreciate art and learn a little about it. Tests are crazy easy, 3rd is a little difficult, but she gives out easy extra credit left and right. TAKE HER, it's an A and you actually learn
She's one of the funniest professors ever - she makes her lectures interesting even if you don't care much for the subject matter. The study guides she gives are really long and hard, but the tests are SO easy. If you pay attention in class, you don't need to do the study guides. Take notes during the review sessions - she basically reads the tests
Easiest class at USC. If you do the extra credit, you can get away without studying for tests. I wound up with a 101 percent. Do the extra credit, especially if you are not a good test taker.
Gotta an A but had to work at it. I think they cracked down on the appreciation classes but i recommend danc 101.
Mana Hewitt is not my Professor however, she just came to Aiken as an art critic for the Aiken Art Guild. She was Fun, Informational, Helpful.....Full of Spirit and managed to critique all of our works from Watercolor to Graphite and do it with tact. She is definitely a Light & Shadow person. How Gifted we were to welcome YOUR PROF!! Carolyn Miller
If you go to class, you'll do fine - she posts the notes on blackboard, plus study guides and image guides for each test. There are 4 tests and they are all multiple choice, and mostly terms. If you attend the class period before the test, she basically goes over all of the questions for you. Do the extra credit! It can save you!!
GREAT teacher. never confusing, no surprises on tests, just learn what's on the study guides she puts on blackboard and you'll do fine. absolute piece of cake, and she's hilarious too. a million times better than the other art history profs i've had.
Most boring class I have ever sat through.
If you are considering this for your fine arts requirement, take Dance or Theater or something else (unless you enjoy art). It is so incredibly boring, and I thought it was kind of tough! I am a pre-med and had a hard time with her tests. I feel like her study guides are ridiculous and confusing...could be just me tho. Take something else however.
AWESOME teacher and wonderful person- Free spirit- Funny!-Helpful and understanding in regards to time for assignments to be due- Eccentric and a breath of fresh air. Talented, smart, and not afraid to admit that she is human. Honest, realistic, and helpful. Take her!
Pretty easy class, very helpful, offers extra credit which really helps, not the most fun class but is not hard to make a good grade
Mana has to be one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is so knowledgable and funny that you become interested in the class. She makes everything fun and is very easy because she understands no one in there is an art major. Tests are easy and extra credit is offered, so if you don't get at least an A you need to seriously fix some things.
shes crazy and keeps your attention on a boring subject..i got an A and missed alot of classes..her study guides are useless, just wait for the review day and write down EVERYTING she says bc its word for word on the tests (DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!)
she's wicked crazy and she laughes at her own jokes and stories, but the class overall isn't hard. just make sure you go to the review day, do the extra credit and study the definitions. the tests are easy just alot of def. and art processes.
I can't say enough good things about Mrs. Mana!!!!! She is BY FAR the best teacher I've ever had.U will learn so much in her class. She is incredibly knowledgeable and tells great stories about the artists you read about.I recommend doing the xtra-credit 1-page papers! If u go 2 class, read the book, pay attention, and study what she says, u'll do well
Good teacher-very knowledgeable. The tests get harder towards the end of the semester. Highly Highly recommend doing every extra credit offered. They are interesting and are only one page long. They are what kept me at an A for the course.
Mana will keep you interested and teach you a lot about art. There are lots of extra credit opportunities, I recommend doing them. The tests are easy multiple-choice, but progressively get harder. It's hard not to get an A or B in this class if you do your work and attend class. She's an awesome teacher and I'm glad I took her.
If you do the extra credit and study guide, this class is pretty easy. Just show up to class take a few notes, but DO the study guide and you will get an A
The most helpful art education professor I have encountered. She is awesome! She knows what she's talking about, having taught many years, her projects don't seem like a waste of time. Quite a pleasant class.
I might be biased because I like art and most people who take this class don't or maybe she just assumes that. But I really enjoyed her and found the class manageable, interesting, and amusing. She's a character and the professor you want to take for this class. The tests are reasonable (albeit scattered) and EC is immense. Also, I love her work!
LOVED this class! Mana is a hoot, but she knows her stuff. Class was easy, lectures fun, overview of all kinds of art sure to be helpful down the road. I will appreciate my future museum trips much more because of what I learned in this class. Tests were easy, straight from lectures.
This class is not exactly an easy A. If you put in some effort, you shouldn't have a problem getting an A. Tests are somewhat difficult. Make sure that you memorize the slides and memorize the terms. And do some reading out of the book. She gives easy extra credit, which helps your grade tremendously. Class is very interesting. Attend lectures.
If you consider yourself to have any shred of intelligence, do not take her class. She talks for whole class periods about things unrelated to images on the test, does not give enough information about what is on the test, and will give study guides with information she's never discussed. She is a complete idiot and a waste of your tuition money.
The most boring class I've ever taken, and so hard when it shouldn't be. She's nuts. Tests are stupid, she picks questions from things she mentioned once as opposed to the things she portrays as important and talks about 4 or 5 times. Avoid if possible...
This lady can be a little crazy sometimes and her lectures are very boring. Attendance is mandatory and if you dont go to class, you will fail the test. There is no textbook and the exams are about how much you can memorize(including date, location and specific facts). i would NOT recommend taking this class in general but the professor is okay.
She is hilarious! It's not the easiest A but she posts all test images before lectures so as long as you focus on those you'll be fine. Gives out like 30 points of extra credit but does tend to veer off topic in lecture. Great teacher overall!
She certainly knows her stuff and tries her best to make Art history as interesting as it can be, although it does get boring. Not a super easy A, but she gives LOTS of extra credit. Attend class, do the extra credit, and study and you'll do fine!
This woman is a little weird. DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT. It will definitely help since her tests are kind of tricky. I made an A but it is not an automatic A class. Study the study guide. Find friends who will sign you in and vice versa the class is boring as hell and attendance is mandatory.
Set up... you sit in class watching slideshows of sculptures/architecture/artwork. That's it. Tests were easy for me, I have a good memory. There's a terms section and then she'll flash up 8-10 of the images you need to know. Just write every single possible thing you remember. I skipped frequently, got an "A" even with "mandatory" attendance.
Memorization! That's all this class is. She posts the images on blackboard before the lectures, and they are the only ones you need. Don't even bother writing down stuff about the other 50 she will show. Do all the extra credit, and don't waste your ink printing out the entire internet like she wants- they never checked it anyway.
She is extremely nice and very passionate about art!! Although I am a Biology major and don't have much interest in art, I have found this class to be pretty interesting! She offers a lot of extra credit and as long as you do it and study a few days before the exam, you will be fine! She posts study guides which are very helpful! Sweet lady!!
She's a great teacher, very knowledgable. If you are not good at memorizing information, this is not the class for you. Tests consists of 40-50 images, needing to know the date, artist, medium and info about the piece. She takes attendance, and provides additional information in lectures and always gives at least 3 extra credit assignments.
Honestly, this class is mad boring. Easy, but boring. Attendance is mandatory, but I skipped a few times. Tests are about 40 art images and 20 terms. Sounds bad? It kind of is... I pulled an all nighter and got a 98 on one test so it's doable. You will want to buy the books, you will need them to study. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT SHE GIVES OUT! IT HELPS!
She's really knowledgable & passionate, BUT classes are boring. Out early (probs 1hr or less classes) Tons of cramming 4 tests. Get books and make flashcards with pics, dates, location, and importance. Tests on 12/40 images & 7/20 vocab she gives out. WRITE ALL YOU KNOW ON TESTS. Do all the extra credit & most importantly: GO TO CLASS <hard to do
Terrible class unless you enjoy memorizing countless pictures and definitions. She gives lots of extra credit...DO IT. Easy to get an A as long as you study
She is a very lively and quirky person. Very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities: in this class we only have three grades (all exams) and we have the chance to have 30 points added onto the tests. It's not needed as long as you study the images and definitions that are listed online.
Funny woman, keeps the class as interesting as possible. Our class had four exams (100 pts each) and four extra credit opportunities (5 pts each). Just an easy report due at the beginning to start off at a 100 for the class, then the tests, 50 Qs. Memorizing a few works of art and artistic methods. Don't bother buying the book, used it 0 times.
Simply show up (mandatory), take notes on the listed images (you'll learn to ignore her extraneous info), and study more than a night b4 with flash cards or repetitive writing and you'll make a comfortable A. No textbook necessary, she posts images for note taking on BB. She's funny in a weird way. Also offers extra credit worth like 10% of grade.
She is a very weird woman but definitely knows her stuff. Class is not an automatic A but if you study the study guide a few days before the test and do the extra credit you should be fine!
Great professor. Class gets boring at times, but Professor Hewitt makes it interesting with her fun and quirky personality. Lots of memorization, but nothing too horrible.
She's a lovely teacher. She has a sense of humor that is odd at first, but you grow to love it. She's a great class to take and makes art history interesting. She's also an incredible artist, which adds to her cool factor. TAKE THE CLASS. SO GREAT.
She is an amazing teacher! Super fun! Don't buy the textbook she provides all the slides online. Make notecards and really study for the test. MEMORIZE THE TERMS!!!!
Such an easy class. She will give you a lot of useless info, but since you will know the structure of the tests, just write down pertinent info that is worth being written. She also gives multiple opportunities for extra credit. I got an A and always crammed the day before the exam.
She made this class a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Incredibly boring and she gives you info that won't be on tests. She's a nice lady and pretty entertaining but I just wish I hadn't taken this class. Memorization is key for her tests. (Graded by grad students)
standard lecture class, but she is very helpful in office hours. she'll help you study, organize study sessions, and more. also, she offers extra credit for 10 points on each exam, just for going to the museum, and writing a 2 page paper. the only drawback, is that if you dont like the subject, you wont like the class
She is really nice, & loves what she does, but this class sucks. She had 3 TA's that didn't grade equally. You can miss 3 classes. There are 3 tests, and 3 extra credit opportunities. She gives you about 50 terms per test that you need to memorize, but are only tested on 10, and about 30 images given a week prior where you only need 8
I really hated this class. Prof. Hewitt stands in front of the class and shows hundreds of pictures and talks about them. It is extremely boring. The exams are very difficult and are pure memorization. She actually takes points off for "messy" handwriting. I highly recommend passing up on taking this course.
This class was pretty boring for me because I have little interest in art but the professor is pretty good. The class is not an easy A for non-art majors. The last 2 test are pretty difficult and require a lot of studying. Do the extra credit reports they are easy and they will boost your grade a lot. That's what made the difference for my A.
The best metal-working/jewelry class ever. Mana is awesome, always there to help and makes expectations clear. She's funny and helps all of her students with any project they are working on. She is always there too. I would take her class again if I could. Everyone in my class loved it.
TAKE A DIFFERENT ART CREDIT. Grade is avg of 4 tests around 200+ flashcards each. There are extra credit opportunities but they're not enough to make this class an easy A. It's super boring and attendance is taken every day. The one test she gives before the drop deadline is the only easy one or everyone would have dropped this course. DON'T DO IT
Get your credit somewhere else if you can. This course was so difficult unless you love pure memorization. All the information I needed I got from the TA's the class before the exams.
I loved this class and Professor Hewitt! She is a very sweet lady. But, if you don't like the subject and don't pay attention in class, you won't do very well. Art History in general is a lot of memorization, so don't think you can get around that. I thought it was an easy A
You don't need a textbook! This class is easy as long as you study and do any of the extra credit (one page, double typed papers..super easy!) Also if you pay attention in her quick study reviews she gives the class before the test you are guaranteed to know some of the exact questions for the test. Highly recommended, super nice & talented woman!
She is such a great teacher! Made a 76, 90, 98, and 94 on all the tests and got about 30 points in extra credit, so i got a high A. I would definitely recommend her. Just do the easy extra credit and go to class and take good notes and it should be an easy A.
Her lectures are long and can at times be dry, but Professor Hewitt has some funny stories. This class should be an easy A.
The tests are hard but she posts study guides and stuff that you should really fill out. Study, study, study.
Everyone is required to take some sort of fine art class. Take this one it's so easy! She gives between 5-10 points of extra credit on each exam (one paged typed double spaced review of some art gallery or show). Professor Hewitt is a nice lady, her lectures are a bit boring, but she almost always let us out early. Tests are 50 MC questions.
Her class is all lecture, but there are study guides for each of the 4 multiple choice tests. Plus, there are plenty of extra credit options.
Mana Hewitt and a very very nice lady. Her lectures are extremely long and boring. Her tests are specific so start studying. I pulled out a B, but that's only because of her extra credits. She almost always lets you out early, probably because half the class falls asleep during her lectures. She knows her stuff, but tell random meaningless stories
Professor Hewitt is an extremely nice lady and is very funny. I wouldn't say her lectures are the most interesting, but I definitely did not dread going to her class. The material she teaches is pretty self explanatory; just pay attention and try not to miss class. Keep up with online assignments, and you will do well in this class.
Mana Hewitt was my last minute teacher for arte 260. her classes and lectures are super long and boring but the class itself isn't hard. If you're passionate about this subject and want a really interesting class, I wouldn't recommend taking it because its dry and boring.
She is a really fun teacher who grades fair. All of her tests are multiple choice with 50 questions, and she gives plenty of extra credit. You'll get an A as long as you go to class and memorize a few artists and paintings and do the extra credit. She will call out everything that will be on the test. Won't use the text book much if you take notes.
Professor Hewitt's ARTE 260 class is an easy class. The material is self explanatory, but her lectures are boring. She makes side jokes that only the front couple rows can here, so everyone else thinks she's laughing at herself. Basically she's an easy teacher, you just have to show up to class. She's nice and an older lady.
Mrs. Hewitt is a very sweet old lady who knows and loves art. Her class is made up of 4 tests worth 100 points each. She gives 7 extra credit papers worth 5 points each which are very easy one page papers. The tests themselves can be a little tricky and specific but if you go to all the classes take notes and do the XC you will get an A.
I can't even imagine my time at USC without Mana Hewitt. She is the best.
Mana Hewitt is amazing. She does so many things around the School of Visual Art & Design, it is astounding. She is incredibly intelligent and loves sharing her knowledge with students.
Took this class for a fine arts credit and it was way harder then expected! If you are looking for an easy A do not take this class. Her lectures are long and boring and her tests cover a lot of material and are very specific. Way to hard for a 101 class. Do not take
she's awesome. plain and simple. lectures are dumb and long, but she makes it funny and makes it clear what to know. gives study guides and at least 5 point easy to bs extra credit paper on something art related. no homework, overall easy class. would recommend and i hate art but she made it relatable and easy
Super funny and lets you know what you need for each test. She has a sign in sheet for attendance but didn't pass it out every time. Her tests are not super hard. She also gives the chance for extra credit each test. I probably would have made a better grade if I didn't skip so much. She calls you out for being on your phone.
Mana Hewitt is such a sweet lady and she knows that most of her students are only taking her class because they have to. Go to lecture, take decent notes, and you will make an A. She lets class out early almost every day. Would definitely take her again.
Amazing and caring teacher. Gives a chance for extra credit on every test which can make a complete difference on your grade at the end of the semester. She also lets class out early around 15 minutes everyday so you can get to your next class. Definitely recommend taking her.
She is a really nice, and her lectures are interesting (but not always at 8:30 in the morning). She lets you out early most days and the tests are extremely easy. Highly recommend for an art credit!
Whole grade is 4 tests and she offers extra credit on, if you show up and kind of pay attention it shouldn't be difficult to get an A. She's real nice and overall awesome, would definitely take her again.
She is a very sweet lady but her lectures are BORING. She puts the powerpoint on blackboard but she mentions a lot of terms that are not included on the slides in class. Do not study based on her list of terms because she did not include a lot of them that are on the test. You must study to do well.
Provides tons of extra credit opportunities, extremely straightforward tests, makes the lectures as interesting as possible! I would definitely take her again and there's no homework or need to buy the book.
Mrs. Hewitt was an easy class. Her lectures include a lot of definitions and thats all you need for the test. I broke the terms into days to be able to remember all of them to successfully take the test. Have to attend three outside of class events in order to write 2 page papers on them. Easy grade. Easy class. Easy teacher. Take her for AIU.
HW isn't really graded, she just gives you a check if you do it. She gets offended if you leave class early and sometimes won't pass the role bc of people leaving early but she is extremely passionate and tries to make the lectures fun/interesting (some are) but sometimes I can't sit through it all & want to spend my time elsewhere. Not a bad class
Almost every day there are class responses, so be sure to go to class. There are three critiques over the semester along with a few tests. She's really nice and her lectures cover everything you need to know for the tests, which are multiple choice and based on recognition and basic definitions.
Other than one mandatory writing assignment, the class is all based on exam grades. I took her fall 2017, and every exam was online, even the final. However, I heard she didn't do this for earlier semesters. She offers ample opportunity for extra credit, but you honestly won't need it if you have online exams. Attendance is mandatory.
The work is so easy. 3 tests and they are all online, and the critiques are virtually impossible to fail. You get a point every time you go to class, though, so make sure you show up! Lectures are boring, but she tries to spice things up. Easy A, and you might learn a few interesting things along the way!
Easy easy class, just make sure to show up. Each class is a lecture with 3 tests throughout the semester. Each test is online and you can use all of your notes, all it is is vocabulary words. Easy A, just be sure to show up or youll fail otherwise (points everytime you show).
Her lectures make you want to fall asleep but tests are online.
She takes attendance every class with a note card and if you have to leave early for even a crisis count on her calling you out. When I approached her about fixing a mistake she made when grading my critique she said "grades didn't matter back in my time, you'll be okay." All tests are online and easy to look up, do well on those, easy A.
She is super nice and says some funny things. Very energetic and makes the lectures as interesting as you can with cool stories. There are 3 tests online (no final) and they can be challenging if you don't go to class. Takes attendance every class for points of your grade. There are 3 critic papers you have to do but they are easy to get A
Takes attendance every day. Boring lecture every day. Every test is online. Would def take again, just get ready to be bored for an hour and a half every other day.
I would take her again if I could. She is very passionate about her class and although she is lecture heavy she makes them enjoyable. Tests are online and there are few assignments. Attendance does count as a grade.
Prof. Hewitt basically has mandatory attendance, you have to fill out a notecard every day with your name so she knows if you're there. But, the tests are easy and the 3 critiques do not take long. She spends pretty much the whole time lecturing, but her stories are funny and she's very entertaining. I really liked her & would definitely take again
Professor Hewitt is so sweet. Her lectures are very entertaining! There are 3 easy online tests and 3 critiques. She takes attendance everyday. Love her class and I would definitely take her again.
Lectures are required but boring, and theres a chance you'll get called on in class. Take the class with someone you know if you can, because going to the art museum, a dance or theater performance, and watching a movie are all required outside of class.
Lectures are somewhat entertaining. I took this for the Carolina Core hoping it was going to be an easy A and it pretty much was. There are 3 easy online tests and as long as you take good notes in class you should be good. She does not post the slides online so take notes. You do have to go to the museum or something but its not that bad
Lets just say I was 1 point off from an A in the class and from getting a 4.0 overall and she didnt care hehe grades are a calculation not a negotiation like I get it but 1 POINT!?! Her lectures are quite boring and attendance is based off writing art descriptions that she pulls up in class. The critiques are easy but annoying/pointless.
I really enjoyed this class. Her lectures are interesting, and she says some funny things. You get credit for attending by writing a couple sentences about a piece of art she puts up. If you take notes in class, the 3 online tests will be easy. You have to write 3 short essays, but they aren't difficult.
This is was not what I was expecting for the class. Signed up for synchronously but was asynch. Not clear grading criteria and what would be on the tests. Notes / what was on the test! It was super confusing and the powerpoints were so messy. Tests were only avaliable on the weekends and I work weekends and it was very hard to coordinate.
If you read the lecture slides word for word you should be fine on quizzes. She uploads rubrics but does not really follow them, the whole class lost points on our first paper due to this. She is reachable through email but has been very rude to me in every reply back about questions on grades for papers or quizzes.
I took her class asynchronous online. For interdis. relations in the arts, you MUST have the textbook!!! Workload was not difficult but quizzes were risky bc theres only 5 questions. Feedback on papers was never very nice and she would say what you did wrong without telling you how to do better. Tests, lectures, and quizzes open the whole week.
Pretty flexible on attendance, just don't miss a ton. The class was boring but she made it easy and was very sweet. Says the textbook is required but we never used it.
She is super funny and nice. Lectures are always interesting and she makes the class fun. You get 2 points for every class you go to so you should go to class. Theres 3 exams and 2 critique papers that you need to go to the Columbia museum for and watch a film for the other. Shes a great teacher highly recommend
Makes papers easily understandable. I haven't been to class in weeks but participation is mandatory so make sure you go lol. She gets pretty off-topic with her lectures so I learned a lot about Ancient Egypt's mummification process. Overall pretty easy class.
Professor Hewitt's lectures can be very long and somewhat boring, but I definitely give her credit for trying to improve them with lots interesting stories and anecdotes. Tests are take-home, no homework aside from a couple short papers throughout the semester. She takes attendance every day, but it doesn't have a big effect on your grade.
Mana is actually hilarious, but also super knowledgeable about the subject. Jewelry-making is very technical and challenging, sometimes frustrating, but she helps to keep it chill. An older lady with a passion for the class, I would recommend her if you are interested in jewelry-making!
