Her lectures are somewhat interesting, but at times the can be boring. Reading before her lectures really helps..you get more out of it if you do it that way.
I feel a bit sorry for her. I don't do any of the reading. Just take notes - good ones - and practically memorize them for the tests and you will be fine. The notes she gives you are actually interesting if you are into global politics.
overall, not that bad. She refuses to put the powerpoints online & her lectures can be hard to follow sometimes. 3 grade: midterm, book report, final. Just take good notes and study them
She is enthusiastic about the material-our class was not. We seemed to move at a very slow rate and didn't even finish all the material. Midterm was very short, leaving little room for error. Other than the final, a book review & a current events presentation, not much work. She was hard to comprehend and was boring. Avoid the class if possible!
Strongly recommend the class. Even if you don't like politics you will feel like you learned a lot at the end. The presentations were boring though
Turrible. She barely knows what she's talking about, is condescending, and completely hates her job. Not one of the students wanted to go to class because of the boredom. It was so slow.
The final was very hard. You have to work hard in this class even if there were'nt that many assignments. SHe is nice, and made the class interesting.
She really knows her material. She tends to try and rush through class and we still do not always get to everything she wanted to. Readings are dense, but helpful. Few assignments, so it is hard to raise the grade if you slip up.
I took the class with the intent that I would really like it but the class just ended up becoming a parade. She teaches verbally and has very few powerpoint notes. Class is mandatory attendence and a book review is involved. very liberal.
She's an ok professor, she doesn't handle disrespectful students well and appeared overworked. Tests are fair, but the reading isn't. Mass amounts of reading that really isn't necessary, and usually isn't used in class anyway. Wasn't worth it to buy the book.
You have to take the Washington Semester with her. Its a great class!
Dr Jamal ROcks!
This class was absolutely terrible. She was incredibly boring, always seemed overwhelmed and just unreasonable. Way too much reading that had nothing to do with the lectures. It took her forever to get grades out, including being late giving out our final grade..
She assigns way too much reading and rushes through lectures. She really knows her stuff.
Lectures consist of her talking to the class and asking questions, only to reject everyone's answer and give no 'right' answer. She also gives no online notes until test day, and absolutely no study guide. The tests aren't too bad, but spending 2+ hours per week and reading 60+ pages is not worth it for a Gen Ed.
She treats us like were middle schoolers. Whenever she calls on someone, she interrupts them and says "VOLUME!" It is so distracting. Her lectures are boring and her power point is only a brief outline of topics that will be discussed in class. She is a nice lady and knows her stuff, but the structure of her class is tedious at best.
Dr. Jamal is really nice and really knows what she is talking about. Her lectures are pretty boring, however, and her tests are super hard. Buying the textbook seems like a waste because she requires a ridiulous amount of online reading.
She's one of those people that are too smart for their own good. Lectures very dry. Readings were dense in detail and page numbers. She tries to cram everything in during the semester when the class needs to be split into two semesters. You learn alot if you can keep up, but be cautious.
She is so smart and very excited to teach the course! I had to study very hard and still got a b+ I learned ALOT. But I had alot of notes to take and readings to due. If you want to learn about the middle east, I promise you will!
Though Dr. Jamal clearly knows her stuff, her lectures feel rushed and disorganized, therefore unclear. Textbooks were a waste due to the masses of outside reading. Tests are meant to trick, though she does curve when necessary. The course material is valuable information; its a shame its not better presented.
Professor Jamal was amazing to learn from. I took her for "Politics of the Middle East" and she knew and understood the material inside and out. It kinda blows my mind that I can now say I actually understand the Israeli-Palestinian situation. She managed to go in-depth despite a huge amount of material to cover. Would take her again in a heartbeat
She definitely knows what she's talking about, but if you don't care about this subject, it is so hard to understand. I felt like everything she said didn't relate to wat the tests were on. Wouldnt reccomend unless you love global politics.
If you show up to class and pay attention in lecture, you'll get a B. Tests are designed to trick you and there is a lot of outside reading. She's pretty cool though.
Dr. Jamal's not the worst and she's not the best teacher to get stuck with. Her tests are hard and her lectures are boring but if you show up to class you'll do okay. If you're in her class try to switch but if you can't you'll be okay.
Tests are designed to trick but if you pay attention during lecture, you can get a B. She's really nice and helpful.
Fairly easy class. Make sure you study for the exams because they can be a little tricky. She isn't really too open during class discussions. She will tell you if your opinion is wrong and will make her beliefs heard. Barely used the textbook. Class can be very scattered in terms of note taking. This is not a terrible class but it can be annoying.
Tests are hard. Study the material well and you will be ok.....but she tries to be tricky. Make sure you do all the other assignments and attend class and you can get a low b.
When I was in D.C., she was so much fun. Class was good, and we really connected with her! Great for the program that I took!
Interesting class, paper was a bit of work, but she'll help you with some of it if you are frustrated. Proofread your work. Show you care about the subject and the paper, and you'll do really well.
Extremely uninteresting. Very fast-paced and tends to ignore questions that are asked. Tests are pretty much from the study guide but questions are hard. AVOID
she's not bad, can be kinda funny sometimes but also moves pretty fast sometimes. go to class/take notes/study a decent amount and the tests will be easy. nothing overwhelming and definitely more interesting than it seems like it would be
She was very helpful. Be prepared because there is a lot of work for the class. As long as you go to class, take notes, and do the readings, you'll do fine. You will definitely learn a lot in this class if you take the time do to the work.
Great class- she goes kinda fast but as long as you let her know to slow down she will. She really knows her stuff. Take it it with her if you can- as long as you attend class it was a breeze
UGH! This class was really frustrating, she is a fairly good teacher and I did learn in the class, but she is HORRIBLE at making tests. They are obscure and ridiculously hard. The study guide does't help either. The whole semester I thought I would get a D, and ended up with a B so she must curve. Don't need to buy the books.
I LOVED her. Her lectures are very long and she tends to talk very fast but if you ask her to slow down she will. Tests are not that bad as long as you go to class and take notes and STUDY.
She is a nice lady and has a good heart but she can't lecture very well. Her lectures are long and she basically reads you what she assigned as your reading assignment. She also talks REALLY FAST and there are lots of notes to be taken. Her tests are a large portion of your grade but if you study the night before you should get a B+.
Very tough class, but worthwhile. You have a ton of readings every night, the lectures go extremely fast and cover a lot, and the exams are both written so you have to study hard to know what you're talking about. Take extensive notes and do as many of the readings as you can and you'll be fine.
She's very nice and friendly. Tests are fairly easy, and there are 3 of them in the semester. She talks very fast but if you ask her to slow down she will check herself and make sure you're understanding her. I had no interest in the material and it's a hard class, but she made it much better.
She was great and it was a great class. I highly recommend.
this lady..... if you want to experience any sort of happiness in your life do NOT take this class. sure jamal is nice or whatever but the woman speaks 100 miles an hour and gives study guides that include about half the information on the test (and she will tell you that - not an opinion). bless the soul that decides to skip class.. you're skrewed
though attendance is not mandatory, if you miss class you are screwed. She gives surprise in class assignments, so if you are not there, you can't make these assignments up. You also have to do the reading. The material is actually interesting and she a good prof, but this class is too much work for a cluster requirement.
First, I have major respect for Professor Jamal; she is the smartest person I've ever met. Her lectures are intense, she goes fast and she covers a lot in one lecture; however, she will slow down and further explain if you ask. She wants you to understand, so help her. Go to class, her slides are bare so to know the material you need to be there.
I love Dr Jamal. She's very smart and her lectures are actually interesting. She does go very fast but if you ask her to slow down she will. If you miss class you're screwed because her slides are so bare that almost all the info comes from her lecture. Would take again.
Manal is a very smart and nice lady. However, she clearly didn't understand this class was supposed to be a gened. Even as an INTA major I found the material challenging, the readings too long, and the tests too crammed with information. Global politics is a very interesting topic but to succeed in her class, you REALLY have to buckle down.
I didn't skip a single class and I studied hard for the class. Others who skipped the class five/six times did not do very well. I didn't read any of the assigned readings because her tests are more lecture-heavy with two/three questions from the reading. She is very knowledgeable with the material. Show up, pay attention, and you'll do fine.
No attendance policy. I went to about 5 classes the entire semester and did fine. With minimal effort, pulled off a B, could have gotten an A with more effort. Only two exams and a final, which are really thorough and a little tough, but gives a study guide for each. Fill it out and you should be good to go. Not the best gen ed, but doable.
Dr. Jamal is extremely intelligent and genuinely cares about the subject she teaches and wants everyone to do well. She did share personal anecdotes that seemed to annoy my classmates, but they weren't too long and were helpful in remembering what was discussed in lecture. She's also super sweet and super willing to help when asked!
She is very intelligent and passionate about her lessons. During her lectures, you might think that the material is hard to understand, however, the tests are very straightforward/easy if you studied the study guide. Personally, I could have done better in the class. Attendance matters a lot because her tests correlate straight with her lectures!
She only has three assignments all semester and 2 tests and the final. She is a nice person but the lecture is boring and the attendance is nothing so no one shows to class (but you have to go to class if you want to pass)
Great professor, but all the material is in the lectures. Random in-class group projects. There are two textbooks but she never uses them, and they only account for 2-3 questions on tests. Overall, an amazing professor and the material is interesting, she just goes very fast in lecture.
Her tests are unnecessarily hard. She isn't straightforward with her questions. The tests will cause you a lot anxiety. You'll go in knowing the information and then be so frustrated by the wording of her questions.
She was an okay professor. Lectures every class and the exams are hard but manageable if you study and take good notes in class. I am making this review halfway through the semester and she still has not put one grade in which is frustrating. Overall she is nice and she cares about the subject, but she goes off on tangents a lot.
She is discombobulated coming into every class. She gives random group assignments if you miss class just forget about even learning the information. You get a study guide for tests, but what is on the study guide is not on the test. Tests are more so based on the lectures. Gives reading according to the syllabus but they don't help in the class.
Manal Jamal is very knowledgable in Global Politics. She will tell you to read the books outside of class but I didn't read once and didn't do worse than an 85 on an exam. As long as you attend class and take notes you will be fine.
She is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject matter. She doesn't exactly manage her time or organize her lectures well though. The class isn't hard as long as you show up, pay attention, and study. However if politics is already boring to you, DON'T take her class. Lectures are not special and could be pretty boring.
Prof Jamal is clearly very knowledgable and she tries to make the class interesting, but unfortunately the lectures can be very long and dense. Try to do the various readings, as the midterm and final are blue book exams and she wants very specific responses. There's also a research paper and group presentation.
I would NOT recommend taking this class unless you have no other choice. She never graded things on time so we had no idea what grades we had going into the final. She also took attendance every class so make sure you go. She graded assignments super hard even though there weren't clear guidelines to begin with.
Dr. Jamal's teaching strategy is pretty much to do as little of it as possible. I'm sure that she is a very knowledgeable professor; however, it often appears as if the class is teaching her. Assigns work on the syllabus, but then never mentions it again. Grading criteria is unclear. I do not recommend taking this professor.
I had no idea what my grade in this class was going to be until it was posted on my transcript. However, she did grade fairly. You must participate. We had one paper counted as a large chunk of the final grade, the rest was made up of presentations and busywork. No tests. A lot of reading is assigned. The "lectures" are discussing the readings.
Honestly this woman does not care about you whatsoever. She will take a ludicrously long amount of time to grade your assignments, for example, there were two assignments we had to do early on and she has been taking forever to grade them, and they really arent even that long. In addition, in her lectures she speaks a lot yet her words are empty.
It is very difficult to do well if you don't attend class, there is almost nothing on canvas if you miss class. There is also reading every single night. She takes forever to grade assignments and gives basically no feedback, so it's really hard to tell what your actual grade is. Though, she is very passionate about the subject and is nice.
she takes forever to grade assignments and exams, youll never know your grade in the class. shes a nice lady but it isnt worth the trouble. dont take this class if u can help it!!
Prof Jamal is not bad; she is a really nice person and smart. The class is really just lectures, and most of the grades are the 3 tests. Although there is a lot of reading the tests are fairly decent. The class is not that hard so if your fine with lectures she's good.
Professor Jamal is clearly very passionate about the topic that she teaches, she's also just generally a funny and friendly professor. This class though is quite hard, there is a 10 page paper due and both exams are written essay based exams that she grades rather harshly. But, I do feel like I know quite a bit about the middle east now.
She works very hard to be neutral in her class and I respect that a great deal. I liked her a lot. She was kind. She taught primarily through lectures and the readings help if you don't understand the material. You're graded mainly through tests. If you take notes in class and study them beforehand, you'll be okay.
This was a really close but you do have to show up and do the work. The lectures are long but pretty interesting, and you will learn alot.
Prof. Jamal is def very knowledgeable about the topics, & although her lectures are long & dense, they can be interesting if you're into learning about what's going on in international politics. However, for a Gen Ed it is a little hard and you definitely do need to take lots of notes. Barely any grades, so study for the tests. She's very nice tho!
Even though attendance is not mandatory I would not recommend skipping lectures or you probably wont succeed. Dr Jamal is super knowledgeable, funny, and overall a great professor. She is an extremely slow grader and locks the grades so you never know how well you are doing. Not an assignment heavy class but grades are based on mostly exams.
This class was a pain, if you are not interested in this topic do not take this class. Her PowerPoints are awful. It's lecture heavy, but full of useless information. During exams she constantly reminds you of how much time is left, making it hard to focus. I passed without doing the readings that she assigns. Takes forever to grade. Locks grades.
She does not like being challenged and takes things very personally even if brought to with a simple question. I needed to talk to her about a family emergency before class and she responded with "make it quick." I wasn't expecting condolences and a hug, but I thought that was uncalled for. She can't stay on topic with lectures and topic switches.
Do not take this class unless you are interested in the topic. Class was so lecture heavy it was painful to sit through. If you already have some knowledge of this topic you should be good because the way she teaches makes it seem like you should already know everything. I highly recommend NOT taking her.
awful, she can be nice but she taught this class like we already should know the information. She said on the first day that there should be two classes for this one because it is so much. It definitely was a pain, glad its over
If you want an easy GENED, don't take this class. She's very lecture heavy and her slides don't cover what's on the exams. She will ask you to write what she says, repeats that multiple times, and then will do that the entire class. I I did alright in the class, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. She's a nice prof, but her teaching style isn't.
Class wasn't too hard but is definitely not an easy gen-ed. She is super nice, accessible, and answers all questions. Every class is a lecture so get ready to take notes, I don't know what other people in here are saying but the lectures cover pretty much everything on the exams and the exams are online. Overall not too hard and she's super nice.
I liked this class. She's kind and gives clear lectures. The exams are pretty much word for word from lecture so as long as you go to class and take good notes you'll be fine. She also gives some discussion posts or short answer assignments that give you extra points which I liked. The only thing I didn't like was that she takes forever to grade.
Class was difficult but extremely interesting. Dr. Jamal is a solid professor and very informed on the subject matter. I would highly recommend attending as many lectures as possible and doing as many readings as possible as the subject matter is quite extensive. Tests are a little difficult but fair, if you attend the lectures you'll be fine.
She's nice but her grading is annoying. Even though its multiple-choice exams she doesn't release the grades until like two weeks after we take it. She does not let you look at you overall course grade at all in the semester, so you have no idea how you are doing. Doesn't put slides on canvas until the week of the exam. Doesn't grade stuff on time.
Dr. Jamal knows what she is talking about which makes the lectures interesting. However, she doesn't post grades until after the final, so you won't know how you're doing in the class. Do all the assignments and the 3 quizzes (she drops the lowest one) and you should be fine. Exams are hard so study for them!
I very much enjoyed Dr. Jamal as she was passionate and gave clear guidelines for assignments and tests. I do which there were a few more assignments because your grade is based on only a few discussion boards and tests, but overall good class but VERY lecture heavy. To understand the material you have to go to class!
If you are taking her for 492 run as fast you can! She doesn't give by grade in time for your to improve on the next assignment. Her attitude when you respond to question is a little rude. She grades harshly. 0/10 highly don't recommend if you want your senior year to be great. She doesn't email back when you have a question important assignment.
Dose not teach a single thing treats the class like a blues clues episode.
As long as you pay attention to the lecture and take notes, you will do well. She doesn't post the powerpoints or grades, so that is a bit annoying, but overall she is a good professor.
She's very friendly, but genuinely such a difficult teacher. Most of your average is by exams, and most of what is on the exams is not what she includes on the study guides. Very lecture heavy, and she tends to either under-explain things, over-explain things, or just give unorganized information. Would NOT take again.
She does not show you your grades throughout the whole semester and sometimes her lectures go off route and don't make much sense. I would only take this class if you are interested in global politics.
Takes forever to grade assignments, and is not thorough with her lectures. She is also all over the place with her lectures and almost seems like she doesn't know/isn't very confident in the material she is teaching. If you have the choice do NOT take her class.
This class actually ruined my entire day. Nice lady but literally the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Nothing she says makes sense and there are only a few grades for the whole semester. Her study guides are awful and don't help. She gatekeeps the grades until the very end.
Professor Jamal was very well informed on the topics that she taught and was a caring and understanding professor. The difficulty of tests was just right, and the content she lectured on was proportionate to what was on the test. I will be honest almost all of the 1s or 2s given in her ratings are wildly inaccurate and dramatic.
Dr Jamal is very knowledgeable on the material of the class but her lectures were extremely disorganized and hard to follow. To make things better, her slides have little to no info on them and she posts NOTHING online. There aren't enough things she grades us by so if you bomb a test youre pretty much screwed. Not awful but i wouldn't recommend.
She is very nice and responsive to emails. But ANYONE saying it is above a 3 must have this subject come easy. She never puts in grades (also does not let you see what your average is), she claimed she would curve her exams (she never has), and her study guides never truly demonstrate the exam content. This subject itself is also particularly hard.
Lectures were somewhat interesting but the exams were extremely difficult unless you absolutely KNOW and understand all of the info. Easy GPA dropper- was my lowest grade by far despite how much I studied.
Dr. Jamal is an extremely kind professor. She is very organized and obviously knows what she is talking about. She doesnt release grades until THE VERY END. This is kind of annoying and the tests are difficult. You get 3 exams plus a few side things but overall not many graded assignments. I would not take again but she is overall not bad.
Ms Jamal is very nice, but it is a hard class. I am in 7 classes, this is by far my lowest grade. The classes are extremely lecture heavy, if you miss a day you are basically screwed. Goes off topic alot, which would get me confused if the topic was on the test or not. study guides do not show whats actually tested, grades till the very end. WNTA
Professor Jamal is very thorough, and definitely loves teaching her class, however her teaching tends to reflect her own personal beliefs, and all of her sources and data appear to be from 2006 or before. I wish the material would be more recent, and she was more accepting for other perspectives. The tests and workload are perfectly manageable!
Really like her as a person. I'm a good student but fell asleep in her class (not normal for me). Lectures were long and boring. She gave study guides for tests which was cool. I disliked that she didn't ever grade things and I didn't know my grade going into the final. Takes weeks to grade scantron tests, but she commutes and has another job.
For a GenEd, this class is unnecessarily difficult. Your grade is based on exam scores and just a few 3 pt. writing assignments. Attendance isn't mandatory but in order to pass, you have to go to every single lecture and take detailed notes (on paper. laptops aren't allowed.) I'm not religious but I prayed every day for this class to be cancelled.
The most biased professor I've ever taken. She can be sweet at times but a lot of her lectures seem pointless and she keeps us there beyond the bell nearly every time. A lot of long readings that are often just repeating the class material but will have one extra detail that you need to know for the exam. One of my worst professors so far.
