This professor is extremely difficult, and I highly suggest against taking this class; unless you are an avid lover of Philosophy and can pick up on old English quickly. His grading is very rough, and a majority of his quizzes and tests are hard. I did all the readings, studied, and the extra guided questions and still did poorly.

This professor is passionate about his teaching but makes it very difficult to assist students in understanding early philosophy. He is a nice guy, but a very tough and strict professor. 3 exams in class written. Quizzes at the end of every week powerpoint's are used for answers. The readings are typically 20+ pages each week.

If you are just looking for nonsense general ed credits then do not take a class with Prof. Arriaga. He is very strict, grades harsher than any professor I've ever come across, has hard tests, and the tests are the only part of your grade that really matters. Do not take this class unless you are really intent on being challenged on the subject.

He certainly cares about the learning of his students. However, he is a very harsh grader. This leads to the best route for success to repeat exactly what he says in the lectures. Unique interpretation will lead to a loss of points. I think this is the most difficult 101 course I have taken. I recommend taking his course in the summer.

The topics are fascinating; texts are good. Virtually no discussion, sadly. The quizzes were specific more than theoretical. Lots of reading and note-taking. The quizzes are linked to the lecture slides; studying from the lecture slides is effective... but analyzing and interrogating the ideas presented is best left outside the class.

He isn't very lenient with your answers on tests so they have to be exactly what he was thinking. Attendance is NOT an option. I'm a smart student and understood everything taught and got a C.

Very traditional lecture format. Studying the powerpoints is the best strategy for quizzes. It might also be beneficial to look for outside sources like YouTube videos that explain some of the concepts for additional understanding. If you don't understand why you are getting points taken off, make sure to ask early on so you know how to fix it.

Be aware that while Arriaga is a tough grader and scores feel arbitrary at times, he has an extremely generous grading curve. If you have an A/93% before final, you don't have to take it and get an A in the class. Everything rides on the midterm. Study lecture notes and PowerPoints as if you need to recite them and you should do well.
