VERY easy Very Nice, Follow Directions and Study his reviews.
Helpful, presents clear lectures, and knows his stuff. I had no interest in history prior to his class. Would recommend this professor.
He was a very nice teacher i really enjoyed his class because he sticks to the notes, and is very funny at times, this class was great! He is a great teacher
This is the easiest History teacher you can find. The optional review sessions pretty much give you the answers to the tests and you know the essay questions beforehand.

All I have to say is that he made this class really easy....all you have to do is study the notesfrom his lectures and you will pass the class.....great professor

Good professor. Knows his stuff. Expects students to attend class since about half of it will show up in exams. Cute.
Just use the notes from the powerpoint and you will pass the class.
excellent professor. he knows his stuff, fun teacher, you'll learn alot. 4 test and he gives you a study guide. Great Class!
Show up and take notes.
Gives a ton of notes but shows them in powerpoint so write fast because all the exams come from the notes. He provides review sheets for all the exams so do them because all the answers come from it. Know your stuff because the questions can be tricky. No papers but there is in class assignments.
Be prepared to take lots of notes. Professor does not get off track. Learned a lot.
Interesting class. Exams also class assignments and then discussion. Best part is section dealing with immigration from Mexico. Makes you think.
Very easy!all you do is take alotttt of notes and have tests over them!all tests are essay and short answer questions.very easy if u go most of the time n take good notes!
I was reading through the ratings of this professor and I had to comment. This professor does injustice to history. I would sit in the front of the class and highlight the correct dates of events while his slides and lectures had the wrong one. He is incredibly monotone and places bulk of responsibility on the T.A.'s who can be bias
This professor give a ton of note but does show some videos during the section on immigration. All his lectures are given with a power point. His exams are multiple choice with and essay. He takes attendence daily. Sometimes class is boring but overall he is a good professor with a light work load.
Not fun
Mr. Ramirez is a very good teacher. His class is fairly easy, and the videos/movies he showed is class were extremely interesting. Very good chicano studies teacher
Good prof. Exams are easy if you pay attention and take notes. Lots of chances to earn extra credit too. I would def recommend his class. Don't know if he has the same TA's every semester, but the ones I had were BRUTAL!
His movies will make you cry. He is highly intelligent. If you are not in favor of all of the immigration things that he says he makes the class difficult and silences people who have opinions contrary to his. His tests all have essays that he is hard in grading. He wants you to agree with his opinions. Controversial subjects.
Easy class and cool professor. He knows what he's talking about and likes when people speak up. TONS of notes. Make sure to show up because he passes around a sign-in sheet at the beginning of class. Everything he talks about is really interesting, and he shows a lot of films. Easy grade.
DO Not Take This guy. He is soo monotone, and it is hard to do good on the exams, Though he gives extra credit.
This guy is pretty cool... Very monotone but shows movie clips pretty often to liven things up. Very easy class and he gives lots of extra credit!
Good teacher. Knows what he's talking about. READ the textbook. It actually helps... alot! Also recite his notes by memory. Tests are kinda weird but once you read they're a piece of cake. Gives exam reviews that have the essay questions on the tests. Good class (:
Very clear during his letures. There are ton of notes which are 75% of the exams. The exams are easy if you do his reviews and give DETAILED answers on the essay quetion. I answered the essay clear and to the point but only received 5/20 and 70/80 on mc questions, so I knew the material. Attendance is a must for notes and sign in effort = A
WARNING! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! He makes history very boring. During his lectures he talks really really fast and his presentations just have key terms, not helpful information. The tests are very hard. Plz plz don't take his class trust me you will regret it!
The class could get boring but he is very clear with presentations. Tests are not hard but you have to study.
Attendance is mandatory (signin)his TA are brutal!!!!!his powerpoints are only key terms! the rest are extremely difficult.
If you can avoid this professor do so. He is awful. Attendance was taken every day despite him saying it would be random. His notes are minimal forcing many students to teach themselves the material for the exams. He doesn't teach major events in history like you would think. So again avoid him if you can.
very interesting class. but NOT easy at all. very difficult evaluations, 10 mc, 3 short answer and 1 essay ! but if you study and read all the materials it will be ok. attendance is mandatory.
Easy class multiple choice exams with a short essay at the end. Takes attendance but unless you miss over 7 times he doesn't take points off. Easy group assignments in class and easy class in general. Only bad part is the 4 exams.
He appears to know his subject matter...but, lacks in people skills. You must agree with him or your perspective does not matter. Try to take another Professor. You may enjoy class more and have accurate information especially with regards to dates.
horrible teaching skills. he knows his stuff but he is VERY boring. worst history professor I've had. his class is pretty easy but he doesnt help much or answer questions effectively. take a different class
The worst history professor I have ever had! I am a straight A-student and this professor was horrible, he did not teach well at all! His tests are super hard and have nothing to do with the book or notes! DO NOT TAKE! BE WARNED
This class is super hard. DO NOT TAKE!!! you have to read a lot because his notes and what he says in class is useless. Choose another teacher for your own good!!!
This Professor expects everybody to already know what he is talking about. He has us get a book the we rarely uses. The notes are very generalized and he get frustrated when you ask him to clear it up. They only have review sessions once and that's like 3 days before the actual exam.I hope this helped have a nice day.
absolute worst class i have ever taken at utep, i am in sr year, mandatory attendance, two book readings not including the text book, IAs are brutal, essay writing assignment in class almost every week, and can barely keep up with the professor because he goes so fast. extremely stressful and dreadful!pro makes ias do all the work, very impersonal
Attendance is mandatory, most of the time it's just note taking the professor speaks to quickly, the exams aren't on definition but random facts on the topics. He gives you like forty to fifty topics which less than half of them are actually used. I wouldn't recommend this professor.
Easiest class ever. Don't get psyched out by everyone's reviews on here, I question their work ethic. I seriously only studied about two hours before each exam, and I had close to a perfect score in this class. Don't buy the lecture book -- just google the people and terms and go through the powerpoints. Also, ATTEND ALL EXAM REVIEWS! Easy A!
Dr. Ramirez is very focused on you learning. I like that he would play a lot of videos. It is important that you participate in the discussions to learn. You'll do fine as long as you copy everything from the power point and pay attention, ask questions. He gives out a review before tests, everything in the review will be in the test so study all.
He's really not too bad. Study power points for tests. Tests are multiple choice and one essay question, essay question actually helps out your test grades. In class assignments are easy and they're in groups so participation matters. The book is rarely used, but you do need the course reader for in class assignments. He speaks in a low register.
Very good history professor! You don't need the book with him but you do need to go to class to get a good grade, you should look over the study guides for exams but it's fairly easy overall.
His lectures are very monotone, half of the students would fall asleep during class. His TA's are pretty brutal and at times rude. When you go to the review sessions, his exams are heavily essay based, so they teach you more English than actual history, plus the essay in the exams counts as half of the exam. He makes the subject boring. No thanks.
He's the best!
Professor Ramirez is a good instructor, but he can be a bit boring. His class provides little to no variety outside of his readings and lectures. Aside from that, it's not a bad class. You will read a lot, pay attention during the lectures the assignments and tests are not that hard.
Mainly lectures, so just take notes and use his test review and you should get an A. Had to read two books throughout the semester, then write essays in class that he graded moderately hard. However, there isn't much work besides those two things. Does give some extra credit, only curved one out of 4 tests.
He is well prepared and professional, however, he will not used verbatim all his definitions or material within the exams. Therefore, I highly recommend that you read each chapter. He will word the questions on exams differently, which could be confusing at times. Attend class, tracked. Ask questions if you don't understand. Monotone, but good.
Horrible professor does not work well with the disabled! I do not recommend him! Be prepared to never miss a single day of class even if you have a legitimate excuse!
Took his class on Mexican-American history to learn about my heritage. Used the book a few times for exam questions. Exams are all written-portion so study the material and you should be fine. He put the powerpoints up on Blackboard but he does take attendance and it's a grade so be aware of that. Easy A.
I took Dr. Ramirez's Chicano Studies course online, and let me say; it was absolutely the worst online course I've ever taken. Poorly organized, poorly structured. I could have done all of this research myself. I can't believe I paid for this class. He also has a habit of letting emails go unanswered. I recommend avoiding this class.
Professor Ramirez is a very straight forward person so his class is the same. If you go to class you will easily pass. His lectures are correspondent to his tests so you really do not have to read the book, but it is best to have the book to fill in any gaps. Overall he does give out a lot of extra credit so that does help as long as you do it!
Dr. Ramirez is awesome, grading criteria is clear, exams, in-class assignments and book exams. You have to read two books and have a test on each, essay form. You need to compliment your notes with the textbook, his tests are tricky but easy if you attended class. Make sure you attend and sign in every class, he deducts point after some absences.
Dr. Ramirez is great! You have to read two books and have a test on each. Attendance matters and he gives a lot of extra credit. Make sure you pay attention in class and take notes, exams are multiple choice and an essay.
Prof Ramirez is really interesting, participate! Show up and take notes and tests will be easy! He is really straight forward with his lessons but he makes them interesting and you will learn! No extra credit given but overall a great class ! I have taken him for 3 courses and he is just great!
Extremely picky grader. If you do not attend lectures, you'll miss out on notes. Be sure to study!
This course is a little lecture heavy, lots of reading, but you learn a lot. Timed Quizzes, Critical Analysis and Discussion for 3 modules if i recall correctly. He provides all the readings and videos you need for the class. He drops your lowest quiz grade. Final consists of multiple choice questions and 2 short essay questions.
Professor Ramirez is really cool and straightforward. His class if very lecture heavy and the tests will cover his lectures and PowerPoints he goes over. There is a TA who does all the grading so get familiar with his grading style because he is very picky. It's a good class overall.
I didnt think I would like this class but its super awesome. You get to learn a lot and you can tell he loves the material which I respect.
He makes the lectures sound so boring, hes very picky in the exam essays, doesnt respond to emails, very apathetic as well. Youll take 4 exams with mc and essays ( essays are worth 25 points of the exam grade). In class assignments, gives out lectures and assigns a lot of readings.
Your grade consists of 6 tests. 3 are based off of the lectures (which are hard to study from), 2 are based off of 2 boring-read books, and half of the final is covered in class. Each test contains or fully consists of 2 essay questions. He has his TA grade his essays and his standards are way too high for 40% of your grade
Very difficult to focus in his class. Lectures are very boring, but you have to keep up with them as he talks too fast and have to write everything he says. 3 midterms and 1 final, each 30 questions and one essay. Be prepared to study, that is the only way you will most definitely pass. Also, 5 in class assignments, each 25 points and that's easy.
get ready to take a lot of notes and watch a few movies. Theres no homework and only 5 in class assignments and 2 exams. There are a few readings from the textbook but i never bought it. Professor is very knowledgeable in the area and if you want to learn about Chicano history this is the class, i really enjoy it. Its nothing too exciting but cool
Professor Ramirez is rude when asked questions. He tends not to answer the question and answers with sarcasm or another question so its difficult to get extra help from him. He will make you feel dumb if you need help. Would NOT suggest him.
He really was somewhat of a difficult professor to understand if you arent sitting up front.. The TAs are heavy graders when it comes to grading the essay and the two book exams... He doesnt post reading assignments so you have to pace yourself on how you can finish each book before the book exam
okay teacher, showed up and did what was needed. allows textbook use for assignments in class. Not a super easy A class but a manageable A. I played alot of pokemon go in this class.
He speaks with passion. He actually sounds somewhat angry at the issues he discusses, but in an eloquent manner. It's impressive how he formulates his sentences on the go. It sounds like he is reading off of an essay that had already been written, albeit read with passion. Each assignment/test has great impact. Hosts review sessions for tests.
Professor Ramirez is great at explaining the lectures. I don't like history and I am honestly really bad at it, but I actually learned during his class. He gives you a study guide with everything that the exams are going to contain and his TA's are amazing and so nice! I would take his class again
I took him fall 2019 and I miss his class a lot! Theres a bit of reading you have to do, but its manageable. So long as you read and show up you should be good. I found his lectures very interesting. My class was large so (heads up) he didn't interact with us personally, but he has 2 TAs that are available if needed. I recommend his class!
I liked his class a lot! I took this class in a summer session. He talks from beginning to end so make sure to take notes. He assigns some readings which are for his exams. He shows a lot of documentaries and even a movie. He's funny from time to time. He is a nice guy tbh. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Dr. Ramirez is a real gem. His lectures are heavy but is very clear on what he expects. Attendance is mandatory otherwise you will NOT pass. If you tend to miss class a lot, I do not recommend him since more than 5 absences counts for 20% of your grade. He'll work with you if you fall behind and is truly one of the most caring professors out there.
If you plan to skip lectures or not participate be ready to fail, this professor does not play games. He will know if you don't open his PowerPoint lectures, and unless you can prove you studied with a partner you will not have a good time. I never had him in person, so i cannot tell how he was in that setting. Do your work and you'll be fine.
Took Mexican-American history Wintermester 2023 with him for my Humanities block elective. Lectures consisted of PowerPoints and documentaries. Lectures can be boring sometimes, but if you paid attention, the material was easy to learn. Grading consisted of 5 in-class group discussions and three Blue Book essay exams.
Did not provide support when asked questions. He had limited office hours in which he would be a no-show. He cannot reason with you even if you have a life-or-death situation, which will give you a hard time catching up. Limited assistance during class and minor to no guidance on class assignments and projects. It was more of a "learn by yourself."
Ramirez definitely has a hard course if you don't read or attend class. His grading criteria is super clear and makes sense. With few exams and assignments, everything is worth a lot. He does offer study guides for the exams, which are the reason I got an A in the class. You need a study buddy for this class, but it is a manageable class.
For his class, you have to take really good notes to do good on the exams. His class only had four exams and five in-person class assignments. As long as you showed up for the assignments, he will give you full credit. The exams were 10 multiple-choice, 3 short answers, and an essay. If you take good notes, this is an easy class.
You just need to pay attention in class, everything he gives you it's on the exam. Do the study guides, if you know them, you will do great in the exam
Ramirez is arguably the least personable person I have ever met. His class itself has plenty of cons such as the extremely strict and oftentimes unclear. The class has four major exams, two book exams, and four assignments meaning that everything weighs heavily. The grading of the essays makes no sense at all. Would never recommend him.
Professor Ramirez is honestly amazing and has interesting lectures! You must take good notes to pass his class. The grading is based on 4 exams and 2 book exams 5 class assignments. He truly cares about his students you just need to talk to him and he will help you out. He is strict about being tardy or using your phone so try avoiding that.
The class can be a little boring but it is a relatively "easy" class. You have to pay attention to the readings and take good notes in order to pass the exams.
This professor is pretty good, tests are in person on scantrons, each one has an essay. There are multiple books we had to read to get good grades on the test. And he grades spelling errors too. But it's still pretty easy
Professor Ramirez is great! He's strict about phones, earbuds, and talking, but otherwise an amazing professor. He made history interesting for me, even though I never liked it before. His lectures are engaging and he's very knowledgeable. Study for exams and take good notes and you'll be fine!
