Amazing teacher. If you are an English student you should strive to get a class with her. She is very strict/hard, but really pushes the students to be a better writer/analyst. She will teach you more about literature in 15 weeks than you have learned in the past 10 years of your life.

Great Professor! Very passionate about her craft, and will get you into it as well - enough to make you want to participate, read the assignments, and do well over-all. Assignment questions are not over-the-top, and class discussion is very open, positive, and actually family-oriented. Very pretty as well.

Tough but great. Keeps me interested and will tend to individual needs when asked. She really wants you to do well and understand texts...and she's been everywhere.

Extremely dedicated prof. After ENG101, 201 can be a challenge and this prof. will encourage you to work hard to make the best grade possible. Use of different texts and movies from which we can choose 1/3 to work with. Be prepared to analyse and move up a level from the 101 level!!

The Short Story-She makes learning and interpreting literature fun and interesting. There is no wrong answer, and she doesn 't penalize you just as long as you can argue your point. Every paper can be written twice and she keeps the better grade of the 2. A paper due as a midterm and one for the final. The rest of the class is heavy reading.

even though i didn't get any credits for this remedial class, it was the best class overall! Great professor, i don't think there's anything she doesn't know. Always helpful, nice, interesting and funny. Just do the assignments and you'll be fine. I don't think I would have gotten a 10 on my act exam if I hadn't had her as a teacher.

Her style of conducting the lesson was unique,for the choice of books, used in the class, was surprising.I liked close readings of the texts.Moreover,she was available to discuss my paper after the class and via email.I’ve gained a lot of new skills (how to work with text,write essays)in her class.

Prof Manya Steinkoler is very passionate, engaging, intelligent and enthusiastic about English/film and psychosis. We viewed films to dissect & critique and through discussions delved into psychological inferences and analysis. She encouraged us to write quality papers challenging the philosophies of characters actions & filmmaker’s intentions.

She cares, very sweet, intelligent and funny woman. She want's you to write and will push you for getting the best results. Offered many extra credit possibilities and just was a pleasure to talk too. Films and psychoanalysis were brilliant and fun. One of the best classes I ever took.

Excellent professor but be prepared for intensive writing, layers of psychoanalytic commentary, and loads of reading. She was always available for questions concerning essays or plain discussions whether it was after class or through email. Not the easiest class but well worth the experience.

I loved this class! Prof. Steinkoler leads a smart & engaging discussion of every student's ideas to analyse every film. She provides additional readings to enrich the process. Prof. Steinkoler is TRULY INVESTED in the improvement of every student's critical thinking and writing skills. She goes above & beyond to give prompt & assertive feedback.

Personally I love Professor Steinkoler, she is witty and very intelligent. She can be tough and critical, sometimes hard to approach. BUT she is passionate, and if you do the work she can lighten up. Before taking Professor Steinkoler's class, I was a directionless accounting student going through the motions. Her summer literature course, running the gamut from Shakespeare to Bret Easton Ellis, awoke within me something long dormant: an honest intellectual drive, a sense of self, a new lease on life. This class was a serious wake-up call.

Tough, insofar as honest self-exploration is tough; rigorous, in the way one might expect serious scholarship to demand rigor. Professor Steinkoler infects her students with a surge of energy and passion- she is glaringly brilliant, but without pretension, which makes her a joy to learn from. She is very passionate, and though she may wander from the topic of literature often, its not a setback. She gave three papers as mandatory for passing the class, each of which you could revise if you were not happy with your grade, also she gave more than enough extra credit. I love, love, loved her film class. Best class I've ever taken in BMCC. She analyzes films through a psychological lens and gives you the input to do the same. She doesn't ask for much as far as work (just two essays each are long though) and it really is interesting to watch a series of films and discuss each class.

I wish I could have a professor like her in all of my classes. Her passion for literature, sense of humor and knowledge make you want to learn more. She takes difficult works and explains them in such a way that you understand it. When writing pay attention to her comments. I would take any class that she teaching. She is a great Professor and is very smart. Her intelligence may come off as condescending but who cares. This class was 2 papers 4-6 pages for each. She is a tough grader but gives you great feedback for revisions and takes time out to help her students. If you're not a strong writer I would utilize tutoring. Communicates through email also.

I wish I could take all my English classes with her. my finals are done, still, she is ok if you want to resubmit any homework. her classes are super hilarious. she likes hardworking students, doesn't matter if her opinion matches with you or no. full of humor. you will definitely fall in love with her and literature.

Professor Manya is amazing in her class, but sometimes she can be little rude when it comes to asking her any question after the class. She is not very strict with homework, but if you want to improve your writing then definitely you should submit them; she will give you feedback on every writing you'll send and this will allow you to be better.

WI class so i figured film would be fun, it was! Prof Steinkoler is an intelligent funny and slightly intimidating woman. She picked out great interesting films and always generated some good discussions. Easy A? I don't think so but if you wanna sharpen your writing and watch a couple of good movies I'd recommend.

Gosh, she's hard to grade. Personally, her summer 201 had no structure. Your grade is just two essays + we had lots of extra credit opportunities, and rightfully so as she's a tough grader. She's extremely knowledgeable which is the only reason I wanted to stay. Otherwise, it's not an easy A as far as English is concerned.

Her lectures are interesting. It seems like she takes the time to prepare the classes. She adds psychology in her lectures, which is also interesting. She is patient and a warm kind of person. Her Professor assistant is not as good as her; Jane gives confusing feedback, is a discouraging grader, and very sarcastic.

ENG392 was my second class with Prof. Steinkoler. She is an excellent lecturer, teaches with sensitivity, and encouraged us to engage with the readings in class. Her TA, Jane, doesn't teach but held writing workshops that I found very helpful. Prof. Steinkoler's feedback and revision process also helped with my writing and understanding of texts.

Professor Steinkoler is the German Literature Professor I always wanted. She gets you interested in world literature and teaches you about philosophy, including psychoanalytic theory along the way. I truly enjoyed how playful and profound the classes are, how diverse and engaging the dialogues are. I recommend strongly you take her class!

at first its was kind of to much, The professor was very nice thou. Broke the exam reading into parts and I understood it better. i did film extra credit - it was fun. I am not a great writer and was nervous but she helped me alot. The SI helped revise -jane met with me on zoom weekend. we did brainstorm, edit. class was OK as far as classes go.

We read a modern play about a female artist in the Baroque period that looked at gender, power and creativity. Jane, the SI really helped me with my writing after class.
