Organic chemistry is TRICKY, but he is an excellent professor. He's actually the best chemistry professor I've had thus far. DO NOT SKIP LECTURE AND DO NOT CRAM. Stay on track, a lot of what you learn one week builds on the previous week. Assuming you put in the work, there is no reason you cannot get an A+ in the lecture portion of this course.
He's a GREAT professor and really helpful when you come to his office hours. Very clear and straightforward on what you need to know. Do all the assigned book questions and problem sheets and you're golden. His method of teaching is a likkle old school where you copy EVERYTHING that he writes but don't worry he has a legible handwriting
AMAZING PROF!!! Gives amazing lectures (still need to use the textbook for further understanding), cares so much about student well being, and tests are easy (exactly like problem sets). Very easy to do well but also thoroughly understand chemistry by then end of this. Also get the second recommended book, way easier to understand and learn from!
He's an amazing prof. Do all the assigned questions and attend every lecture and you'll be fine.
Good prof
Clearly very passionate about both teaching as well as chemistry. He is very clear and explains things well and tries his best to not complicate things. Made the effort to try and learn as many students names and helped a lot outside of class. Staying consistently on top of work will guarantee a grade above a B in the lecture part.
Super awesome prof. He made organic chemistry lectures exciting and interesting.
He is actually the best chem prof you will ever get! His office hours will save your life because he has these group sessions where he will try to answer EVERY question you have. His tests are VERY fair. The TAs are super hard so Im glad I got to take orgo with him! I actually got to learn so much from his office hours.
He's amazing!! Genuinely cares about his students and signifies the importance of mental health throughout the course. He tries his best to make sure students understand lectures but it is your responsibility to keep up, especially after midterm1 since the content gets really tough. He also ends up adjusting grades!
By far, one of the best profs I have had at Ryerson. Organic chemistry is also one of the toughest courses I have taken and he really tried his best to make sure everyone passed this course. With this in mind, if you stay on top of your work weekly, an A is possible. He adjusts the final mark so you'll be pleasantly surprised by your mark.
Dr. Adler was an amazing organic prof. He definitely knew what he was talking about and had so much charisma and enthusiasm when he lectured. The biggest problem I have with him is his tests. They are so difficult and have nothing to do with the problem sets he assigns for homework. You really need to watch out for the tests, not the prof.
Really great prof! He cares about his students and it really shows. I went into orgo scared from all the horror stories I've heard but Dr. Adler does his best to help! His office hours are amazing and I would recommend going to them whenever you can and don't leave studying to the last minute. His tests are really fair.
Great professor, class wasn't boring at all. His test are pretty fair in my opinion and I would 100% recommend him for anyone afraid to take organic chemistry. He really takes his time to explain concepts and I only used a textbook for practice problems. I relied more on my class notes when it came to midterms and exams which was quite beneficial.
This man is a GOD... He provides a lot of help and his exams are very fair. He teaches a challenging course but does it perfectly. He is truly a gem. The grading for this course was only midterms but it was okay in the end since I learned a lot.
Organic chem is challenging for me but Dr. Adler made sure that all concepts were well explained and kept lectures simple and interesting. The assignments were difficult since there were no midterms/final exam. I only wish we had more time to cover all the course material that was described in the syllabus.
The way Dr. Adler talks about a course would inspire anyone!! A truly, awesome and caring prof. Lectures were fairly straightforward, just would have liked more practise for those in class assignments (they were not easy). I wish he covered everything on the syllabus however. No exams, just assignments. You really have to work for a good grade.
Dr. Adler's love for chemistry shines through when he teaches. The class assignments were a bit tough but interesting since they required some critical thinking and fairly so because everything was open-book. I just wish we could have covered all of the topics outlined.
Best prof you could ask for hands down, really wants his students to do well.
Dr. Adler is a real gem! A truly kind and caring man. However, it would have been nice if he just taught what was listed on the syllabus instead of making the entire course about research papers. Only graded by assignments (not easy). Although Adler is great, taking this class won't improve your organic chemistry skills. Work hard and you'll ace it
Honestly, he seems like a nice guy and good prof but my experience this semester was that he was unprepared, couldn't manage his time teaching the course contents, didn't have powerpoints ready, and seemed new to the material himself. He was happy to answer questions and help, but his teaching abilities weren't the best, at all.
He should stick to teaching organic chem or inorganic chem. Please don't teach biochemistry next year
Im really surprised he was so awful considering he was rated so high by the reviews, but he was so bad like he did not know the course material AT ALL and the final exam was based on stuff he barely taught. He seemed like a good guy but was just so frazzled all the time, maybe he should stick to orgo and not bio courses
Shocked at how disappointing this prof was He taught the last half of the course&seemed like a really nice guy I could live with the fact that his lectures were boring&he couldn't manage his time properly The thing that screwed my whole class was him putting material he barely covered on the 45% exam&his useless slides No one left the exam happy.
Dr. Adler is a really stellar prof. His tests and exams are very fair, and he is totally committed to creating a low-stress, low-pressure learning environment. It's very clear that he enjoys teaching and inspiring students as much as he loves and enjoys chemistry. He handled the COVID-19 situation very well and offered students a lot of support.
I needed this class to graduate and Adler made it accessible and actually exciting. He is super approachable, he actually cares about his students.
so good
By far one of the best professors I have had in uni so far! If you have him THEN YOU WILL LOVE HIS CLASS. His synchronous lectures were great and he made organic chemistry easier to learn.
Dr. Adler definitely cares about his students. He makes the time to get to know students, this makes the class environment more conducive to learning O-chem. It can be a tough subject for a lot of students, but he ensures students have the tools to be successful. I only had to use youtube once over the entire semester; which is saying something
I love him! If you have him for Organic chemistry your in luck! he was amazing and truly cares for his students and honestly wants everyone to do well. Orgo is hard tbh but he tries to make it easier. I got an A w/ him if it wasnt for the way he tested us i dont think i would have gotten that grade. he gave us 2 days to do final exam hes a blessing
Overall, kind and knowledgeable. but the main point of a lecture or a course is to connect the dots. He knew what he was teaching, but I believe if only he would connect the dots between the lectures, then I would have understood what was going on. If you take this prof, make sure you know your the stuff beforehand. but he has a great personality!
He really cares and wants you to succeed but struggles to connect the dots. He will go from points A-Z and not explain how he got there. There is no mandatory textbook but the textbook study questions are what will save you, always practice them and learn as much as you can from them. He also spends lots of time on simple stuff & not the hard ones.
He's overall nice and humorous. He would teach with extremely vague details and does not clarify what he meant by the concepts taught. He just hops right onto the content without stating the purpose of certain concepts. The midterms include much more detail than what he had taught. You would need to rely on Youtube tutorials to truly understand.
Adler is a really nice guy, but unfortunately his lectures give you nothing you need for the 3 midterms/final exam. His slides have no information on it so you have to learn from YouTube or the textbook. The questions he does in class are not similar to the textbook and the textbook is no where close to certain questions/aspects on the exams
Dr. Adler is an extremely kind, caring, and intelligent professor. My only form of feedback would be a less ambiguous teaching style. Students naturally struggle with organic chemistry, so a less vague teaching style would help. I think students would also benefit from a more concise outline on what is going to be on final exams and midterms.
Dr. Adler needs to have a conversation with some of his teaching assistants that work at his lab. The amount of humiliation students make from some of them is brutal.
A great prof and even better person. I understand when people say his teaching could be off, but that is not entirely true. Go to office hours and practice and you will be good. Organic Chem is a class where there are infinite questions he can ask, so obviously stuff on the test varies from the examples he uses. Great prof, great guy, decent tests.
Dr. Adler is a funny and caring prof who is a great person but his teaching style can be vague. Ochem is hard to learn in general but his assessments would ask questions that were covered briefly on one slide with few additional notes from him. He distributed grade weights according to whichever benefited you most. Use your external resources!!!
I used so many external resources and YouTube videos because his teaching was not the best. His personality however was amazing!
Adler is nowhere close to the worst prof, but nowhere near the best either. His midterms were quite fair, but his final was brutal. If you take the course, do your best for all three finals and don't even try to rely on the alternative grading scheme. Do lots of practice, and honestly participation didn't matter, lectures were not that greatest.
Great personality, but that, unfortunately, is not enough to teach organic chemistry. I tried everything. I attended all of his lectures, took notes, went to problem-solving sessions, solved every question assigned (some chapters i did twice),did all of the suggested reading, but I still did bad. The thing i was missing was someone to teach it to me.
You could tell Dr. Adler cared about students and their wellbeing but didn't put it into practice. He's a nice guy but not a great teacher, skipping lecture and going to lecture gave the same result. His TAs seem to care about students but are judgey when we didn't know/understand concepts. The only reason I passed was because he curved the final.
He is a very nice guy and has the least boring lectures, but I found that he skims over some important stuff and does some super simple problems which you'll never see on a test. Overall, he's not bad and does show that he cares for students, but he was for sure overhyped. Evaluations are medium-hard. Make sure to do as many review questions.
Dr adler is passionate but teaches quickly and assumes we know whats going on. he discusses important concepts briefly and assumes we understand. he moves to quick to understand and be able to ask questions so you get lost easily. do practice, try to learn, dont skip class, study hard.
He's a great guy and super funny. The problem is that he barely does examples in class, and the few he does do are at the same level as the mc questions on his midterms. So many midterms, each harder than the last (not content-wise). Expects you to be able to solve questions way beyond the scope of what he teaches. Do the textbook questions.
He is passionate and entertaining. But the difficulty of problems on the exam are much harder than the ones in class. Does not even provide previous years midterms or finals. He even went over a chapter that is not on the final instead of doing review. You MUST practice every week in order to pass, there isnt enough resources to learn last minute
Dr. Adler is a nice and charismatic guy. However, he spent a lot of time teaching the first half of the course content, which was relatively simpler to understand, while the same amount of time was allotted to teaching the second half of the course which was confusing as heck. This time allotment needs to be adjusted for sure.
I attended every class, wrote notes on all lessons, and did the practice problems. I have a 4.3 GPA but this class might just be the one to humble me lmao. Dr. Adler is great, but some improvements could be made: more in-class practice, going over the reactions at a slower pace, maybe allowing a final exam cheat sheet?
Adler made a course that is already difficult nearly impossible to learn. He offers little to no resources, and no past midterms/exams. The practice problems he DOES provide are entirely different than questions he'd give on exams. His slides lack detail, and he'll give test questions on a topic that we spent maybe 3 minutes discussing in lecture
He is a great guy and truly wants you to learn and provides so many resources, weekly problem-solving sessions, office hours and practice problems, and he is always available. Orgo is extreme, so you need to put a lot of effort in your own time to succeed. He could change his schedule to spend less time on the first half + be more clear sometimes.
Always late to problem solving sessions. A self learning course as slides aren't even enough to complete the posted practice problems ( which are much easier then the exam ). You are better off getting the patreon of "Organic Chemistry Tutor" and watching the videos instead of attending his lectures.
Dr. Adler is mid. While he is kind, caring, and has decent to okay assessments (and teaching), he fails to make clear announcements about any exam breakdowns and takes a long time to respond to questions and emails and his content coverage is unbalanced. He also finishes writing his exams at the last min, and likely reuses questions from other yrs.
Dr. Adler is an amazing person, he's very funny, kind, and caring but for orgo i struggled. I went to every single lecture and he'd explain the basics of each concept but wouldn't go over any of the challenging questions. He re uses exam questions so ur best bet is to find someone that has the exams from previous years and practice them / memorize.
The lecture portion of this course is graded solely on tests. It is hard to get a grasp on how you are doing until you get your test grade back. I wish there was other assessments such as weekly quizzes or assignments to take the pressure off the tests and allow for an analysis of how we are doing.
Organic chemistry is a very hard class on its own and the lectures did not make it easier. It is probably best to teach yourself everything and save your time than going to lectures. Heavily based on the midterms and exams. This class was very difficult.
He cared about us but his teaching was not the best. Coming to class or not was the same. It was almost like I was expected to know the content from before hand. Textbook was sort of useless. Organic chem tutor on YouTube helped till last unit (no video). labs were really good, TAs really cared. Organic chemistry in general is really hard
Worst experience of uni. He doesn't know how to teach. He doesn't provide any outline of how the midterms or final is going to look, and doesn't provide previous years tests to practice from. His final and midterms are dreadful. Everyone was struggling in his class. The textbook questions were useless. Really hard to do good in this class. :(
I'm just posting this review to say, Dr. Adler is still definitely mid, but please don't listen to the review below about the textbook being useless. Use whatever resources u like, but the point is u need to grind from the start and not at the last min and the textbook provides a good wide range of questions that adler otherwise doesn't provide.
He cared abt the students and did everything he could to make sure we could understand the material. The last half of the course was a lot harder than the first half and for some reason felt more rushed. Didn't love that the lecture grade was made up of 3 tests, an assignment would have been nice. There are worse profs out there, he's good.
Dr. Adler gives general explanations but sometimes lacks information/context. His tests are difficult but mostly fair. I had to do a lot more independent study (than in other classes) to understand the concepts. The labs for this course were easy and fair; follow the rubrics and reach out to your TAs. Overall, this class was difficult but doable.
People are being unfair. He did a good job and provided a lot of resources. But Orgo is a pain, and he can't spoonfeed people. My only criticism is to distribute the time better with more focus on the second half. He also needs to connect the dots. A 9/10 professor and a 10/10 person.
I loved this course. Dr. Adler was a good lecturer but orgo in itself is a difficult subject, so it's not entirely his fault that students were having difficulties understanding concepts. I went to lectures a couple of times, and they were pretty decent, but having a good foundation helps with keeping up.
The horrible reviews are written by lazy people who wanna get a good grade and do no work! This prof actually made me fall in love with orgo! His exams are easy and as long as you UNDERSTAND his slides, you will do well & he will help. Everything was straight forward, no surprises. You can tell Dr. Adler is an amazing person inside and out :)
This professor was absolutely amazing. He explained concepts very well and loved answering questions about course material, he had great office hours that were very informative. And would explain things over email and or zoom. Orgo is hard but he taught it very well. He really enjoys the subject and is enthusiastic and funny, hes an AMAZING PROF.
If I can do this class, so can you. I failed general chemistry twice and was terrified to take Orgo. Dr. Adler made me fall in love with chemistry as he is so helpful and just an amazing prof. I cannot stress enough that you have to go to class to do well as you are going to need to keep up with the weekly material AND actively study every week!
Adler definitely was my favourite prof personality-wise, but after the first midterm his teaching skills declined. Reading through the textbook was the only reason I passed this class. Lectures felt useless after the first midterm. Labs ( worth 20%) were an easy mark booster so make sure to do well
He's a fun guy but you are going to have to figure a lot out by yourself. His lectures can be vague and will not be enough to do well on the exams and 2 midterms. Do all the practice questions, read the textbook, and understandddd. In retrospect, the content isn't too difficult once you understand the concepts but getting to that point can be hard
Dr. Adler is a great professor but his course needs adjustments. I would have liked it if he had more in person office hours. Otherwise, he really cares about the success of his student and is happy to help them with improving their organic chemistry intuition as long they come to him for help.
He is a nice guy who tries to make the lecture engaging but he cannot teach well at all. His lecture slides are very bad compared to general chem professors who included much more information on their slides. Orgo is very content heavy and his lectures make it seem like it is not. You have to teach yourself. Read the textbook intensively!!!
Dr. Adler seemed like a nice person, but was a HORRIBLE professor. His lectures were confusing, and his slides were severely lacking in information. There was also no exam overview posted, so it was hard to know what should be focused on when studying. The exam was much more difficult than the midterms. Orgo is hard, but Adler made it harder.
The ONLY good thing I can say about Adler is that he is a nice person. Other than that, it's pathetic that free YouTube videos can teach you better than your PhD professor. All I say is constantly teach yourself and review the content every single week. His final exam was not evenly distributed amongst all content and was harder than midterms. Bad
Bad slides. Doesn't tell you what to expect on the exam. Think just because he has a phd than so do you. Obviously a student must learn on their own by reading the text book on their own time (necessary with him) but while he instructs he introduces the content like you already know what it is. He doesn't explain the confusing stuff at all
He's really nice and curved the final marks basically a whole letter grade. He also is very willing to help you with the content if you go to his problem solving office hours. While all of the above is really great, the 2nd half of the course was not taught well enough for me and I found it some of the most difficult content I've had to learn.
What people are saying is true nice guy but he cannot teach. Everything after the first midterm goes to hell. You will have to do a lot of figuring out in his class. After the first midterm, the whole class started trauma bonding. Marc if ur here, ur a nice guy, maybe learn how to teach and have slides, homework, and lectures that are follow-able.
Adler is a funny guy, and you can see he likes organic chemistry. But, attending his lectures alone will not be enough. His slides aren't too detailed for the second half of the semester so I strongly recommend using the textbook and doing every practice problem possible. He doesn't tell us what to expect on any exams so be prepared for everything!
Goated!!!!
CHY142 is a HARD class, and Dr. Adler's lectures were not enough to succeed. His tests are very hard, but he does curve grades. I wish the lab portion of this class was worth more, because there is a lot of work for it. Read and understand the textbook, and do a lot of practice problems if you want to get a good grade.
Adler teaches like we already know the material. I feel like he doesn't actually explain things. The first midterm was fairly easy (basically high school revision w the addition of chairs and newman). Everything after the first midterm was 10x worse. For the final memorize as many mechanisms as possible.
he bought me on the 1st day when he said that he'll make orgo 'intuitive' but did none of that. had to use so many extra resources to understand his material. his exams r even worse. expects u to know more than whats taught n r very difficult in general. doesnt do practice in class. bro does not know how to teach all in all. lectures r must.
Let make mayonaise and mustard gas in class, study the course in the summer before hand for an easier time
The best professor (and human). Organic chemistry is very hard, but his passion for helping his students motivates you to truly do your best.. and not just in his class, but in any of your passions.
Really good prof, but the nature of this course will demand a lot of time and energy and that's just the truth of it. No matter how good the prof is u lowkey have to put in the time to understand. I work 4 days a week so i miss an hour a week of this class. But it's possible to do well, attend the slgs, do textbook and start early :)
really personable and nice guy. he was so good in the first few weeks, really explaining everything, but after the 1st midterm, it all went down. stopped going into detail about a lot of things you NEED to know. memorize all reactions and practice all q's he posts like crazy to do well. final was okay. labs were actually fun!
Amazing prof, explains pretty well, very caring. Labs imo were a lot better that CHY113. If you take this course, please pay attention to introduction to reaction mechanisms. Mostly everything after midterm hinges off your understanding of basic reactions. I struggled to understand the basics and my final grade reflected it.
he made ochem easy. first lecture he said "im only going to teach you stuff that I (as an organic chemist) use day to day" so all the unnecessary boring stuff was cut out. always dripped out too
