He is very kind and understanding
Dr. Gillespie is a great teacher who knows his stuff and knows how to explain it well. He isn't too easy tho, but you actually LEARN.
great teach...learned a lot
OMG.. how am i supposed to concentrate in class.. when the whole time im checkin him out?! hes such a lil cutieeee :)
So much fun in class. He teaches well and gets so into it. You want to go just to see what he is going to say in the next class. His tests are a little tricky but his teaching style totally makes up for it. I would take him any day of the week.
hes a great professor who will actually get you into the subject...hes pretty good looking for an aging professor
real good teacher...sh'd read book, tests aren't very detailed, little tricky......fun in class very nice person
Made the material very understandable. Actively involved the class (made us stand up and simulate muscle contraction, etc...). A few tricky questions on the test, but if you're sharp, you can get an A.
very funny, but exams are not that easy.. can be VERY tricky!! his lectures are just pictures and diagrams but he does fully explain material... take him... but u'll have to work hard!!
He is a great teacher. Makes everything understandable and easy. He has a great personality and cares about his students. His test are very easy, just read the chapters and listen in class and youll get an easy A.
Hes an amazing teacher, really knows his stuff, best teacher thus far, very helpful, encourages questions, and actually enjoys what he does. MUST TAKE!!
If only there were more teachers like him~ Makes the class very fun and interesting.
oh, he is such a cutie, and he makes class so much fun. he is so funny when he acts silly in class. i can never pay attention in class, cuz im too buzy checkin him out. u gotta take this prof. he explains stuff real well, and he's a really nice prof.
This guy is the BEST. His class is mad fun, you will actually want to be there. His tests are mad easy. Just read the book and do the questions like he says and you will have no problem. Plus he comes up with all kinds of stuff to give you extra points on ur grade. AWESOME GUY!!!
He's a really nice guy, and his exams aren't too tough. If you go to class and read the material, you can get an A.
He's a really nice professor. go to the lectures and read the book, and you'll be fine. don't think he's easy and slack cause you'll be setting yourself up for failure
He is such an awesome professor. He gives a lot of anaologies to make the class easier and very wierd examples which you are bound to remember. Tests are very straightforward, no tricks. Just read the book or u'll be in big trouble.
forget anything you hear abt him being easy. hes still a nice guy & a fun professor w/ great examples but the tests are not. you have to read all the material even though he didnt cover it in class. there is an EC essay, which is very short. takin notes arent imp. just read the book & take notes
A very animated man; loves to talk and crack a few jokes once in a while in his lectures. You need to read the book in order to do well in his class cuz he's not giving you much for notes. He also gives extra credit essays (3 total) to add onto your grade.
He gives good analogies to describe the concepts of the lecture. Very energetic and fun person loves to joke around.
Nice guy. Makes analogies to make it understandable to whatever he's lecturing about. Fair tests: 1 midterm & 1 final. 2 extra credit papers. Very approachable and funny. Just make sure you read the textbook though.
please don't screw urself by taking his class. he is not dat easy. i did evrything and i still got a very bad grade and he only has two tests, which makes it even harder to bring your grade up. Please take another professor if u don't want ur gpa to go down. It is better off takeing o'brian. most of them in his class got a D.
He's a great prof. Very funny, energetic. He uses analogies the relates to the lectures. He gives 2 MC tests (midterm & final) and 2 extra credit papers based on articles he assigns. His tests are fair as long as you read the book & answer the ch. questions.
lets be honest! this guy gives two exams, one is the midterm and the other is a final. two papers, so if you miss the midterm, you are doomed! not very practical. since I registered late, I had no choice. If you a have choice, try someone else.
great teacher!!, go to class and take notes and you cant fail!!!!, tests were essay format so you can bs some, you NEED to know some stuff though, 2 exams and a final, n he gives extra credit, read the text book and your good!
Dr. Gillespie is the one of the coolest science profs. at St. johns. make the work super easy to understand, plus he's really funny. read the text and do the article and it's an easy A :-)
He's not as easy as everyone says. His final is really hard.. you should pay attention to BASICS and not little crazy details. And do the problems in the end of the book and the ONLINE quizes cuz the online quiz questions end up on his final.
His finals only took me like 20 mins to finish. His question format is the same as his other two tests and are actually easier than the textbook questions. You can get an A if you can do the textbook questions. He's really helpful and gives a good explanation in class for everything he teaches. He's a one of the best professors in SJU.
Reading the textbook is a must but all questions are straight forward. No need to know ridiculous details just the basics. FYI The final is the hardest test by far.
Best teacher I ever had at St. John's. Some people think his tests are hard but if u read the textbook its really easy. He explains everything really clearly and is really funny and makes the class interesting.
Gillespie is a great professor. Highly recommended. He's not super easy though, be prepared to work for an A but if you read the book, come to class, and try to understand the material you'll definitely get an A!
He's a good professor. He explains the concepts in a way the students can understand. I read all the chapters we were supposed to. I passed his exam, but not with a high grade; it was either because his exam was difficult or I wasn't paying attention what I was reading. He gives extra credit assignments that are mandatory. 2 exams and final.
good professor, you don't really need to come to class, but make sure you study the textbook thoroughly and do the review questions, and you'll do well
Clowns around while attempting to "teach." Comes late to class, ends early, and skips sections. Useless office hours. Little seriousness in the atmosphere, and arguing for points on exams is futile. "Mandatory" extra credit is not read until semester is over: you have no idea if your work was acceptable or not. Good subject, poor professor. Beware.
the most enthusiastic and funniest and cutest professor professor i've ever had. so adorable. going to class is helpful tho he kinda tells stories often also. but his exams are mostly fair and the EC is a huge gift. he is just awesome. cant believe ppl here complain. never got an A on a single exam and still aced the class. read the book.
Not as easy as some people are making him out to be, but not impossible either. He is very enthusiastic and sort of ADD in class, but his tests aren't exactly easy. It's like if you studied the right things, you're good. But his extra credit does help -- 5 points to your final grade!
While his classes may be fun and entertaining, it doesn't really help that much when it comes to study for his tests. You have to study and know the concept in order to do well on the tests. His tests are slightly tricky. They are different from the ones in the textbook. He does give mandatory essay assignments for extra credit, which helps a lot.
horrible, stay far far away
It seems as if he has never taught an EDU course and unfortunately those in EDU 7136 are his guinea pigs. He is unorganized, inconsiderate, flaky and has no knowledge of how the EDU major works at St. John's. I did not sign up for his class, but was placed with him when the original teacher switched out. Please do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY.
coming to class is useless because his lectures have nothing to do with the tests. u will do well if u know the textbook inside out. and yes stay away.
Stay Far Away.
I have no idea why people are saying hes so easy, hes really not. All my friends had Wurple or Balbi and they did a lot less work and studying than I did and got better grades than me too. Hes not impossible but is definately the hardest a&p2 professor especially cause the rest are so easy.
Memorize the textbook and get at least a B+. Lots of reading must be done. Class lectures don't help much on exam. Don't bother taking class notes. Concentrate all effort on memorizing the book.
Great professor! I loved pharmacogenomics because of him!!! Make sure to write down what picture in the text he talks about so you can go back and look at it. He is a great professor and keeps everything interesting I actually looked forward to his class last year! Definitely would recommend taking him. Also he is really nice if you go see him in his office and will really take time to make sure you understand the material. Loved him and can't wait to have him again!!!! :)
He was a terrific professor. He was really in to his lectures. The only downside is that his grading is 40% midterm, 60% final. Also, he says the book is supplemental but it is vital if you are planning on doing well in the course. His exams are really based off the book, even though he says they aren't
The lecture is pointless. He speeds through the lecture and doesn't send notes. The textbook this semester wasn't even available and he was already on the 7th chapter. Grading policy is 40% midterm 60% final. No other exams. No extra credit. No curves. Beware he is heartless about your grade
All I can say is that he is a fair professor. He is not hard or anything but if you want to get a good grade in this class, you definitely have to read the textbook and do the questions from the back of the chapters (out of around 50 questions on the test, he used around 7 questions from the back of the book).
You should definitely go to class even though it is not mandatory because otherwise you will be studying the entire textbook. Focus on what he said in class and go home and read that section carefully, then you should be fine.
Two exams. One midterm, one final. Overall, if you've been going and paying attention in class, and studying from the textbook, you should at least get a B+ or even A-. A's are a bit harder to get because his tests do consist of a few detailed questions. But overall, there are more generalized questions than detailed questions.
Forgot what people said, but maybe they are right at some point. He definitely takes questions from the back of the textbook, yes, there were only about two out of 58 questions on the final taken from the textbook. Hard class but is fair
Really nice guy study hard read his papers its hard at first but you will get used to it but study for his tests and go to class the material is interesting not a bad grader
GPA murderer. Lectures are useless, textbook is a must. Doesnt really care for what you have to say or think. If you have him run the other way. Made the midterm doable but the final was EXTREMELY detailed so you can just imagine the type of grades. Makes anatomy harder than it needs to be.
just memorize the slides which from schanne's professor drive. his teaching absolutely useless. does not care abt students what so ever. completely heartless
Really good teacher, i love this teacher so far. I already have signed up to get this teacher again and If i can take him a semester after that? Ill do it again. Always on time, and very good at teaching.
His exams aren't difficult as long as you read the textbook. He has review before exams and asks us to submit questions to go over in class, then puts half of those questions word for word on the exam. One midterm, one research paper, and the final
Had him for A&P2. 2 tests, 1 research paper. The first test there was MC and a few fill-ins. Final was all MC. His lectures are interesting, but his tests are based off memorizing the textbook, so being in class wasn't very helpful. The research paper was a pain to write, not many ppl got full score. Do practice problems at end of book
He makes anatomy so interesting and funny and honestly cares about students. Sometimes he oversimplifies but that's why you read the textbook. Grade consists of midterm, final, and 1 research paper.
highly overrated. General points covered in class but the test is way more specific. The text book is a must. His examples in class are confusing and honestly just go to the class to understand the main points is useful but the notes in his class are not. Read the textbook.
This year he teamed up w/ Carroll & now we are all failing. The tests are super specific and I read the textbook, go to class and since I did not get an A on the first test, I have been studying for the second exam for a month now, but I freaking failed that stupid test. I do not get less than As, but now I am failing. No extra credit. Just fail.
Course is just based on three exams including final. Just pay attention in class and read the textbook thoroughly and grades should be no lower than a B. Exams are fairly okay if you read and pay attention. His lectures are interesting, he can make some dull concepts in the textbook interesting so it helps you remember for exams. Fair grader.
I did like the class overall and he did make the class interesting but I received a grade lower than what I expected in his class since I was doing so well in his class. I didn't find his tests to be super tricky but in honesty at the end of the day, if you want a good grade you need to study a lot. It's not easy to get an A in this class fyi.
This class was nearly impossible. His lectures are useless as he only goes over generalized concepts. The exams were very detailed. He basically picked obscure sentences from the textbook and made them questions on the test. Whole class is memorizing the textbook. Refuses to send powerpoint slides. Horrible professor. AVOID.
He provides a general overview of the topics. But since its AP, you're going to have to fill in the detail yourself with the textbook. Make sure you go to class, because he makes the second exam harder because no one showed up after the first exam. Plus, he's now working with Carroll and she controls everything, so its becomes more difficult.
I entered this class with somewhat high hopes having read the prior reviews, but left the semester somewhat disappointed. If you want to do well in this class, you HAVE to read the textbook. Like what prior commenters have stated, his lectures are oversimplified and you end up seeing detailed, specific questions on the actual exam.
He's nice and tries hard to make his lectures entertaining, but i think people take this to mean that he's made the tests easy. He has not. The best thing you could do is study the textbook throughly and don't fall behind. It's a LOT of content, and even the most minute details may come up.
Hes so friendly and kind and gives a lot of real world examples to help students understand. His tests come directly from the textbook so just read it from cover to cover - literally. Do this and you cannot do bad.
seems like a very cool and laid back professor but do not let him fool you. Study for his tests because they're not easy and be sure to do well on the paper. You don't have to pay attention in lecture because his exams are straight from the textbook just make sure you read it.
Dr. Gillespie grades you 40% the first test, 50% the final and 10% on a tediously long paper. His first test was hard and was all from the textbook so don't rely on his slides. The second test was alright, it was more common sense because it was about the US Healthcare but still read the textbook to understand and he asks super specific questions.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
He goes over pictures in class and explains them. The topics he talks about is what he focuses on but the test is very very very specific. If you can read the textbook, then you don't even have to go to class. It's more of a self-learn class where you have to memorize everything. Also very strict on grading & no curving. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND.
He's overall a solid choice. Anatomy is hard so you have to work for your grade. He tries to make concepts fun by turning them into jokes. Mostly what he talks about in class is on the exam, but you don't really need to go to class, you can just read the textbook. A few easy quizzes. 1st test, midterm, and final all 50 Q's MC and worth the same.
His lectures are WAY too brief. He just describes pics. Read and memorize the textbook, the test will have things he did not teach. He informs us of quizzes the class before the quiz day class. His tests get harder and so does the material, so keep up with the readings! Also for the quizzes, the questions come from the end of the chapter questions.
Awesome! He gives you acronyms to help you remember challenging anatomical concepts. If you take him, you will pass, I sure did! I did not do as well as I had hoped, as anatomy is hard and his tests are very specific, but I walked out of his class knowing A LOT, and feeling that I learned more than any other anatomy professor could have taught me.
He's not a bad teacher in the least, I just don't like the class itself. The problem with this class is just the amount of memorization required, it's ridiculous (like every other AnP class though). He doesn't really try to trick you and he does want to help but it's up to you and how much you can retain at the end of the day.
Don't do it to yourself. There's literally no points for attendance or homework. Your grade is only based on tests. He doesn't even post notes or any slides online. If you don't memorize the textbook WORD FOR WORD it'll be a long semester
He was actually a pretty enjoyable professor, always gave helpful ways to make sure we remembered important concepts. Definitely need to study from the textbook for the tests, but whatever he focuses on during class and my class notes were actually able to help me do better on the tests! Things he would focus on class would be on tests
Graded mainly on 2 midterms and the final. Simplifies in class and the test can be more specific, so be sure to review the tb (its free). He tells you what to focus on and tends to stay to that. Would recommend!
The good comments here are absolutely not true, just look at the number of dislikes on them... don't get fooled. Yes, he's a funny and nice guy, but reading the entire textbook and memorizing everything is absurd his lecture is too brief slides are not specific and are just pictures. Beware!
I'm not sure how he is in person--maybe that's why he is rated so low, but online he's a great professor. Good lessons, gives us one day off so we have zoom once a week, and his exams are open book. The q's are relatively straight forward, a little hard but not unbearable. Really nice guy, idk what's up w the ratings. I'm taking him again for anp2!
I really liked his online class and am taking him again next semester! He's caring and seems like he wants you to pass. He was my only prof that offered a review session for the final. His tests are straightforward for the most part and he doesn't give a lot of assignments. Taking notes during lecture helps. I would definitely recommend taking him.
There are two midterm exams, one non cumulative final and 10% is participation. Anatomy is a difficult class overall, so you really have to read the textbook/do the questions in the textbook if you want to do well on the exams and retain the information. He gave review questions before each exam that were very helpful and held a review session.
he had 3 tests including final and they were extremely hard. If you don't understand the material you won't get the tests because they are all conceptual questions in depth which is extremely hard. his pp don't have notes they are just pictures so if you missed something you won't know it. the tests have no curve even if the grades are low, no ec.
Definitely a solid choice for an anatomy professor. Had him for both anatomy 1 and 2. He's very understanding for the most part and doesn't give out much homework. The 3 exams count a lot toward your grade so make sure to study. There's a lot of questions on exams but they weren't too bad as long as you studied.
