He is extremely easy and not challenging at all. The tests were open book and very easy. He is boring. Take him if you are just looking for an easy A. But if you are interested in learning anything about the material I recommend a different professor.
Bent over backwards to help us. Some of the class was quite lazy but Dr. Hamer gave them several chances; if you can't succeede in this class it's your own fault. He makes the subject matter very interesting and is quite knowledgeable. Several times he researched questions and brought the results back to the next class. Recommended.
Easy class. Great professor. Explains things really well. He is a psychologist and gives you a lot of clinical examples from his practice, which I found interesting. He is funny, very approachable and really seems to care about each student. Highly recommended.
He is VERY nice and helpful. He really wants you to understand the course which is why he makes it so EASY. He understands the material, and makes it understandable, but if you want more detail, wait until after class and see him because he will make time. This is a great professor BUT his voice is monotone and may spend too much time on one topic.
His class is very easy and he is extremely clear. He is always very willing to answer any questions you have. He gave me a lot of great advice from his experience as a psychologist.
He is great. Very nice, very easy. He makes the class easy so people can relax and try to learn something rather then worring about tests. He is clear and answers all the questions you may have. I think he is GREAT. If I can i would take all his classes. GREAT MAN!
He doesn't lecture on anything in the book. The class is very easy and so are the tests
I learned a lot in this class and it was easy. There were three multiple choice tests, not cumulative. He gives you a study guide for them and he drops the lowest test grade. Most people got an A from what I saw.
he is the one of the most generous and caring professors ever. Anyone taking his class should respect him and ask many questions because he likes to teach. His class is not hard, but much will be learned and that's the most important part of school. He is smart and his students leave a little smarter too.
very nice, helpfull, interested. very easy class, goes over student's questions and gives his best to answer. in class the material is gone over if anyone asks. mainly it's talking about general things. so u kinds learn on ur own. test r open book n note, gives study guide. very easy to pass
He is a very laid back teacher and funny too! Your grade is based on 2/3 big exams and you can do other things to boost your grade. The only bad thing was sitting there for that long. I suggest you get involved by asking whatever you want. He will answer any personal life questions. Very stress-free environment.
One word ... Awesome!!!! He is a fantastic teacher and his classes are easy to sit through usually very interesting and fun.
easy peezy lemon squeezy! we had class discussions on topics or questions the class brought up and the tests are open book/open note! however if you're a psych major, don't take this class because you probably want to be challenged. But everyone taking it for units, TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He is a great teacher!!!! love class and if do well on first two test no need for third. Best prof. I have ever had at CSUN. Need more teachers like him.
He is a wonderful professor and human being! He takes the class time to answer personal questions realted to the topic being discussed or any questions in general. There are 3 test and if you get two A's on the first two no need to take the final! Great class to take if you are taking other time consuming classes! Loved this class!
AMAZING!!!! LOVED THE CLASS. Take him. he is understanding fun. Tests are open book open notes need to do good on 2/3 tests. gives u a study guide everything on the study guide will be on the test. Gives extra credit for participation and attandence. GREAT CLASS!
Great Teacher! The sweetest guy ever. Easy class. Three exams, open books and notes, drops the lowest. To do well you have to show up. No lectures, just answering student's questions, whatever they may be. He knows A LOT and loves to share his knowledge. Wish he taught every class on campus!
grade is highest 2/3 test, everything you need to study is on the studyguide, easy A.
Great professor. Very helpful and easy class. Just show up, participate in class lectures and you will do well.
He is incredible. I absolutely loved him. He wants everyone to do well, and so he curves up generously. Always lectures on topics students want to hear about. To get an A you have to show up to class. If you don’t show up, your grade will suffer tremendously. Since exams are based soley on the text you must but the book. Highly recommended!!
Yes you can sleep in class, and unless you are a complete moron, get A's on the open-note open book exams, but if you are a serious student and/or pursuing a psychology degree, don't take him! Absolutely the worst "professor" I've ever taken.
I am a graduating senior psychology major with a 4.89 GPA. I have been accepted into the Ph.D. program at Northwestern University. I have taken Dr. Hamer for Psy 150, Psy 312, and most recently Psy 460. He is simply the best , most helpful, professor I have ever had. Any student who has a problem with him must be living in a parallel universe!
Very interested in students' success. Tries very hard to help you learn and get a good grade. Available. If you don't get an A you're really trying to goof off because he bends over backwards to help you and show you what to study and how to study for the exams. Great teacher. Highly recommended.
Dr. Hamer does not talk about psychology in this class, unless you have questions. Basically you write topics of which you want to talk about and he goes ahead and answers your questions. The test are open book/notes. You are allowed only 3 absences. The final is optional (if you have a high grade). His class is not boring...kinda fun! i got an A-!
really good enjoys teaching psychology, gives study guide a week or two in advance and everything in it is on the exam he gives clues where to find the answers and reviews a day before the exam.
He is the best teacher I've ever had!! He's so kind, understanding, helpful, funny, and smart. He does take role but it's not a problem because his lectures are great! The tests are open-book and he drops the lowest grade. I definitely recommend this professor.
Great class. Easy tests (open book, open note). Must attend 70% of classes. Experiments are fun to participate in.
he is just great, don't know what else to say
He is the BEST teacher I've ever had!! he is trully an amazing man. Very funny and makes class real fun to attend! The tests are open-book and he drops the lowest grade. I definitely recommend this professor for this class.
He is a little weird and corny. I hated attending his class because sometimes is was just soooo boring and makes me want to take a nap. But he is easy. Takes attendance seriously so show up to class and you dont even need to read the whole book to pass with an A. 3 tests, drops lowest and open book and open notes.
Dude this class is so easy. read the book do the study sheet pass the class with an A. you most go to class that like 15% of your grade. Likes to say F.... every five min it very funny. Love to teach. you will pass this class A or b or c if you do not read. OPen BOOK TesT and Open NoTes
He's a great professor. I was really happy to be able to add his class..It's the best class that I have and I will never miss his class not because he takes role but because I learn so much from his lectures. He's very knowledgable, helpful. I always feel that time is running by in his class since its very interesting. Very Highly Recommended.
Probably the coolest man to ever walk on csun soil. Tests are very straight forward and you get a question for question study guide two weeks before. No lecture, just takes student's questions and answers them. One of the best, kind hearted, and caring individuals I've ever seen period.
He is a real easy professor. He is very helpful and nice. His test are open book and attendance is important in his class. Experiments are fun to attend.
Dr. Hamer is the most interested in his students' success that I've had so far. The course was extremely interesting (he made it that way...the book isn't very good). Made me seriously considering psychology as a major/career. Excellent teacher, very caring human being. He went to ridiculous lengths to try to ensure success for all the particpants.
His tests are open book cuz he doesnt teach anything during the semester. Take his class but be prepared for the tests cuz he only gives u an hour and 15 min. to take the exams
The comments below is from a high school kid because(cuz) you (u). Its a psy 150 class. If you look at other comments they all are good comments that are from 300 and 400 class. Dr. Hamer is very easy only if you go to every class and read the book plus do the study sheet and ask questions he love it and its part of your grade.
Dr. Hamer is an awesome teacher! His classes are interesting as he uses the Socratic Method. Which means that there is a dialogue between teacher and student. You need to attend class & partcipate to get a good grade. His tests are open book/notes so as long as you use his study guide, read the books, and participate you will get a good grade.
Dr. Hamer made introduction to psychology interesting, relevant, and fun. Attendance and class participation are important. There are three multiple-choice tests of 50 questions each and you can drop your lowest grade. The study guide tells you what will be on each test. Loved the class, loved the professor. Recommended.
LOVE HIM. Classes are all discusion. Gives major points for participation, and he's HILARIOUS. U WILL enjoy this clas...and test are OPEN BOOK!
super chill, funny, easy teacher. class is mandatory and your grade is really affected if you dont come so just bring your mac or ipod or have a friend sign you in. 3 exmas, 1hr and 15 min each OPEN BOOK, OPEN NOTE, and he gives you a STUDY GUIDE with the pages of where the answers can be found. EASY A
my best college teacher so far. lectures are kinda boring, but his stories are fun. to pass, just show up, talk or e-mail him, and pass the tests. tests are open book and open notes. got A's on his tests w/ reading only 2 chapters of the book. he gives a study guide, so just organize it to make it easier to find stuff in the book and that's it. A++
I only had two unforgetable professor at CSUN and he is one of them. Knows his stuff, helpful, friendly, you are not just a number in his class. Yes! Tests are open book, but the time is limited, so you better study and be ready or you will NOT pass, since there is no exta credit. After having him I got spoiled and want to take his classes ONLY :)
He is the best! Take his class if u want to enjoy learning! He is the bestest professior i have ever seen in CSUN! Love u Dr. Hamer!
I LOVED this class and this prof. Facts + discussion re psychology but VERY interesting. Grades are based on exams + class participation. Attendance required. Tests are open book and study guides are provided. Dr. Hamer is really chill, funny, and the things you learn are really useful. Recommended.
He's hilarious and caring. A really good teacher that knows his stuff. If you want to know what it's really like to be an MFT, take him! All tests are open book, open notes... but they are still pretty difficult. Use the book's website and print out the glossary, it will help you tons on the tests!
verrrrry easyyy teacher all u have to do is go to class regularly and buy a book. three tests all open book open notes plus study guide, 2 research papers 2 pages long veryy easyy and fun class cant get any easier than thisss
Dr. Hamer is the BEST!!!! =) I absolutely love him!!! He is hilarious!! He made the 3 hour lectures sooo interesting! He's super helpful, allows you to use the book during tests, and gives a lot of extra points for attendance and participation. Just go to class (which is actually fun in this case!) and you should be fine
Loved the class.Professor was great. He got along with the student. He let students use books during tests and dropped the lowest test score. Attendance was mandetory.
yah it sounds easy open book, open note. but if you're serious about furthering your career in psych you actually should read the material not just show up to class and hope to get an A. it's interesting , sometimes it does get a little dull but he'll wake you up. plus you could spill your life story and he'll analyze you without paying 250 and hr.
Hii, Best Professor in the United States!!! I had him for 150 & 312 all A's. I have book for his Psy 312 class, if you need me then call me 310.940.8110, Also i will explain you all his methodology so you will get to know all before class. Enjoy!! I will take all classes he teaches! Very FUN class & very much practical.... ENJOY!!!
Had him for Psy 312 and Psy 361 and I absolutely love his classes, but this was my favorite for sure. Like the icing on the cake. All about being a therapist, doing psychotherapy, and choosing a theory...really interesting and really fun! Read the book come to class, follow the syllabus (word for word) and you will do really well. No worries!
This course all about actually practising clinical psychology. Very cool, very interesting! Dr. Hamer is funny, engaging and very fair. Not easy but if you don't get an A you're very lazy person because he bends over backwards to show you EXACTLY what you have to do. This course and all by this prof highly recommended.
what an amazing professor dr hamer is! he is so helpful and caring. he truly wants his students to pass. there are 3 exams, all open note and open book! attendance is mandatory and there is a lot of reading. easy grader and cruves a lot.
He is a very nice professor. He is kind and approachable. In his class you definitely will get your questions answered, only because in class all you do is ask questions besides his wonderful lectures. Most of his lectures are interesting, if your paying attention in class which is better that way anyway because class participation counts.
He is a very nice professor. He is kind and approachable. In his class you definitely will get your questions answered, only because in class all you do is ask questions besides his wonderful lectures. You will have three exams and and he drops the lowest score. If you do well on both exams you dont need to take the final. Open book, Open Note. :)
Open Book Open Note Tests. Good Luck to ya! :) Drops the lowest exam score out of three exams. You will definitely get an "A" if you put effort and participate.
He always wanna show that most of his clients are very wealthy... he keeps saying.."my clients whi are very wealthy...blablabla....
Love this professor! Had him for two other classes. Never took Psy 150 and was so ahppy to take him to fulfill that requirement. He's very fair, easy to talk to. The tests are open book. Really great lectures.
Very few teachers are as interested, approachable, nice, caring, and GENNUINE WANTS TO MAKE SURE YOU LEARN. Anyone who isn't successful in his class is either astonishingly lazy or has a REAL bad attitude. He spent so much time making sure we had exact details of what/how to learn, etc. and then was SO available in person, by email etc.
Very easy, 3 multiple choice exams, lowest one dropped.
Very easy, 3 multiple choice exams, lowest one dropped. Must do research participation or 2 papers
This prof changed my life overall, great prof and person..class is easy but you must some effort too. If you have the chance take him if i could i would take him for all my classes..3test lowest dropped, you must go to class.LOVES what he does=]
Attendance is mandatory, 80 percent of attendance will get you full attendance. Ask questions it will help your grade. Class consists of three tests no cummalative final.Drops the lowest test grade.
I've only had this professor twice, and he was complaining about no one giving him a "chili pepper" on this site, so here you go, Professor H.!
Heres the CHILI PEPPER you wanted Dr.Hamer; Hope your rating goes up now(:
So far so good... but i should start catching up in my reading.
LOVE HIM! Wish there were more professors like him. Classes are interesting and he always makes me laugh. Attend class, ask questions and use the study guides. Highly recommended !
He's chill. do the readings, no bull.
I really enjoyed his class, he explains things very clearly and tries to make the class interesting. You get no homework and he drops your lowest test score! =) Its a very chill class and you actually learn a lot of useful information.
Excellent professor! Passionate about what he does. And tries to relate book to realm life situations. 80% of attendance mandatory. Open note & open book tests with study guides! Lowest of 3 test scores dropped and no homework.
Great Professor! Go to class, participate with the discussions,& do the readings and you'll get an A for suree. Wish there were more professors like him. Loved his class! Highly recommended.
AMAZING TEACHER! Open notebook, open book test. Basically hands the test to you in study guide form two weeks prior. Answers every question you have. Best 2/3 tests. Allowed to miss 6 times. Just show up, and dont talk while hes talking. You can get away with anything! VERRYY RECOMMENDABLE!
Extraordinary prof., expert in his field, and cares about his students. Open book, open note, exams with study guides. Not as easy as it appears, but if you follow syllabus, participate and do not talk in class, and attend 80% of the time you will get a good grade.
He is a great professor. Although i admit his lectures may be boring but the material is very inserting because it?s from a real life which you can connect with. 3 tests drops 1 test email him questions and ATTEND EXPERIMENTS easy class
Sometimes class is boring, but sometimes it can be very interesting. Attendance is mandatory, tests are easy. Read your textbook, go to the experiments. Very easy. Recommend.
Had Dr. Hamer for Psy 150 and Psy 361 and I love his classes. Attendance is mandatory but lectures are interesting and fun. Do the reading, follow syllabus and study guides and you will do well. Recimmended!
Dr. Hamer is HILARIOUS. He talks a lot about Jessica Alba, sex and drugs and about his own experiences. He is a great teacher and tests are open book. Just attend the class, ask questions (you can also email him questions for credit) and study! I got an A.
Really enjoyed Dr. Hamer?s class. Lectures are interesting. I had a very difficult time this semester and he was so kind and understanding. Attend class, follow the syllabus and you are good to go! Highly recommended!
Very understandable teacher. because of his comical and interesting lectures, i have a love for psychology. take him he's the best!
Sometimes his lectures can be boring, sometimes they're interesting. He has a sense of humor, guaranteed that he'll make you laugh in class. His class is REALLY easy. Tests are open book, drops one of your lowest exams. Do the experiments. Very Easy, you're likely to get an A. Recommended.
loved this class, he is a very funny guy. Class was entertaining sometimes. No homework, just 3 test and he gives you a study guide for each test and you get to use the textbook. Just have to do 10 credits of PSY studies or 2 research papers and if you dont, you grade gets lowered.Reccomend this professor easy A.
The class itself is a joke, if you don't pass you are completely and utterly stupid. 3 Tests, lowest grade dropped, open book, study guide given 2-weeks prior covering everything, e-mail him any questions, go to class, sit there he'll make you laugh once in a while. Took him my first semester in college, wish every class was like this.
I really love the way Dr. Hamer?s lectures focus on everyday life. He is approachable and genuinely cares about his students. 3 open book tests with study guides, a weekly journal and attendance is required. Follow the syllabus word for word and you will do well. Highly recommended!
Very easy. Just skim the book and Do the Study guides!!! Lectures a lot in class and sometimes can be a little boring. Easy when you do the STUDY GUIDES! Either do the alternate two research papers or do the experiments. Easy.
He is super funny and always gives you opportunities to improve. He makes Psychology really interesting and fun to learn about.
Great professor really knows the subject. He's hilarious and the class is an easy A if you do everything he says.
Super easy class. If you don't get an A you're an idiot. Do the study guides, show up to class even though he gets boring, but he will make you laugh on occasion. I wish all my classes were this easy, interesting and entertaining.
Overall he's an easy teacher.Do the weekly readings and its a guranteed A. no homework & test are open book, its gets pretty boring but its not bad. i recommend Dr. Hamer :) & he's HOTTT ;) . LOL
Dr. Hamer isone of the best profs I've had at CSUN. He makesadolescence interesting because the class makes you think about what it is liketo be a teenager today. Follow the reading, do 3 journals, and take threeopen book exams (he gives you study guides) and you are sure to dowell. Recommended!
GREAT PROF. I was definitely a front seater in his class b/c he's HOT!
Amazing class.
Class very easy. You take three exams. He drops the lowest one. Gives study sheets before. Therefore, you can get a really good grade. Must attend class and ask at least two questions a day so he can remember (participation is mandatory). GREAT CLASS!!
Kept saying he wanted a chill pepper so i gave him one. lol. Great teacher. He is hilarious, and even when class gets boring he makes it interesting. He is experienced in Psychology and I highly recommend taking it with him.
Took two classes with Dr. Hamer. He IS indeed one of the most caring and smart professors. However, both classes were exactly the same. No text prep. Felt that I had no clear understanding of the subject matter. If you are interested in moving forward in the field of psych, this may not be your best experience.
Had Adolescence with Dr. Hamer. Really enjoyed the class. He really knows the material and his clinical experiences make his lectures interesting. He gives study guides for each exam and if you attend class, follow the syllabus, you will do well. Highly recommended.
This is my 3rd class with Dr. Hamer and I love his teaching style. This class looks at counseling theories. All of his classes are lecture – no powerpoint – what I love is the examples from his clinical practice which really helps in understanding. Great Prof!
Great class, great teacher. Not an easy A. Open book tests, but the test questions are very difficult. Need to study, but he's very fair, and lectures are fun.
absolutely loved this class. he was such a caring and helpful professor. his class is a little boring, but its okay. open book exams are the best! you wouldnt think attendance is important, but it really is. he counts it against you, so it will either help or hurt you... overall, wonderful class, and wonderful teacher! must take!!!!!
Recommended. Easy A if you put in effort. To Ace this class, get to know him (make appointment), ask questions in class, email a question about the topic, show interest! Not too hard. Open book, open note, but still prepare. no papers, NO GROUP WORK!, only 3 exams, can skip last one if 2 are good. TAKE HIM!
By far the WORST instructor I have ever had at CSUN. He is a very nice guy and an EASY A, but you learn almost nothing. He teaches all of his classes the same way: by having students ask questions based on the readings (which nobody does). If nobody asks questions, there is NO class. You Must buy the textbook(S) as his exams are are open book.
Focus on Adolescence, different perspectives. Prof made it really interesting. 3 open book exams, 1 paper. Not as easy as you'd think. Follow syllabus + study guides you'll ace it. Took prof before, definitely would again. Very open to student questions. If unhappy it's your fault for not participating; goes out of his way to respond to students.
Love the class. Love the prof. Three open book exams, one paper. Follow the syllabus and Dr. Hamer's study guides. Lectures focus on clinical psych and he is very chill. definitely take him!
No worries. Dr. Hamer makes Adolescence interesting and fun. Follow the syllabus and the study guides and you will ace the course. Highly recommended!
Dr. H is my favorite at CSUN. Had Psy 150, Psy 310, just took him again for Psy 361. Classes are clinically oriented but he explains things really well and you learn a lot. LOVE HIS CLASSES!
Attendance is mandatory. Drops lowest test score. I recommend you start the paper early because it has to be at least ten pages to receive a good grade. Funny professor.
Prof is very chill and expert in his field. Had him for Psy 460 before and Psy 310 last semester. If you follow Dr. Hamer’s syllabus and study guides you will ace his classes. Attendance is mandatory but classes are always interesting and entertaining. Highly Recommended!
Very easy class. Heavy use of textbook though, he gives study guides before the exams. Just go over the topics on the study guide. His exams are open book! And he assigns one research paper at the end, on any abnormal psychology topic you want. Credit/No credit type of Essay.
One of the best professors at CSUN. He provides crystal clear examples and grades fairly. He is the type of successful professional many of us aim to be in the future.
Exams were pretty hard but he is fair. 3 exams, drops the lowest and requires a research essay that is credit/no credit based. Overall, not bad
Some people really like him because his exams are open book. He gives us a study guide 2 weeks before each exams. If you are good at finding stuff from the textbook very quickly and accurately, this should be an easy class. However, his lecture was a torture for me. He just talks about random stuff and himself. I got an A but didn't learn anything
Have taken Dr. Hamer for Psy150, Psy310, Psy361 and Psy460. Absolutely love his classes. He's knowledgeable, caring, helpful. There is no powerpoint and classes are organized by group discussion, student questions and examples from his clinical practice. Open book exams with study guides. Attendance is important. Inspiring professor. Take him!
Had Dr. Hamer for Psych 361 last yr and last semester for Psych 460. He is the one of the best clinical professors at CSUN. He respects students and his classes are meaningful and interesting. He gives students the freedom to learn at their own pace and I love that. If you are interested in clinical psychology, I highly recommend his classes.
This class is so very chill! I have had Dr. Hamer before and love his classes but this class is just THE BEST. It's all about how interpersonal relationships from infancy to attachment are formed and the basis for romantic love. PSY 496RL is an experimental elective but If you have a chance don't miss it!!!
Open book exam there's no notes in his class don't even bother taking notes cause there's non to take. He's a pretty chill prof. one big 14pg paper don't miss class he gives credit at the end for being there majority of the time write one question per week do everything that's on the syllabus and the points will add up.
He is the BEST professor ever!!! and He is HOTTT!!! lol
Dr. Hamer is easily one of my favorite teachers I have ever had at CSUN. I took his Psych 356 Wednesday night class with my two of my best girl friends. We all sat in the front because we loved his lectures and he always made us laugh. We are going to miss this school because of him. If you dont get a chance to take him, youre missing out.
He is so sexy. His tests are not easy nor hard, open book, so just go over the syllabus so youre not wasting too much time looking for answers, and he gives a 13 page paper, not hard tbh. lectures are fun, and hes super nice.
Prof. Hamer was very helpful he has open book tests and if you are good at finding things off the book this class will be easy. However attendance is mandatory and thank god it is because he is HOT!!!
Super boring, didn't learn anything. 3 tests. Gives study guides w topic and page #s. Tests are open booknotes, so just be sure to bring your study guide and be good with the index so you can just look up the topic and boom, easy A. Never read anything from the book after the first test because you really don't need it.
He is a very funny guy! He's also very helpful and genuinely cares about the well-being of his students. Although his lectures are long he always has funny stories and comments to keep you entertained. MAKE SURE you participate so you can get those extra points at the end.
I friend recommended Dr. Hamer and it was my favorite class at CSUN. He really makes clinical material in the DSM-5 interesting. 3 open book exams and a research paper. Attendance is required but he will keep you awake with examples, jokes, class hypnosis demo and lectures that are are really chill. Wish all my classes were like this!
IF you are interested in clinical work you will LOVE LOVE LOVE. Lectures in 356 are focused on application of psychology to business. Three exams (open book) and a 13 page APA paper. Attendance + class participation important. Lectures focus on motivation in the workplace, he uses actual examples from his consulting practice. High recommend.
I would take his class again because its easy. There is 3 exams but drops 1... most ppl take the 1st 2 & skip the final. Annoying part is that attendance is crucial for an A & his lectures have nothing to do with his exams (he tells u that the 1st day too) his exams are open book & he gives u a study guide. easy class but boring lecture.
One of the best psych classes I have ever taken! His grading is super clear it's all presented on the syllabus. 3 tests but he takes the best 2/3 so you only really have to take 2 if you get A's on the first 2 plus no final! I guess the only sucky part is the long research paper but it's super easy. He made me actually want to go to class!
Best teacher! The class is so simple you would have to try really hard to fail it. 3 tests open notes, no homework , no powerpoint lecture. all you have to do is read the chapters he assigns each week. Always come to class because you get extra points at the end of the semester. Would LOVE to take again!
Easy A, yes! Will you learn? NOPE. I feel like I wasted 3 units of my semester in his class. He talks a lot, but never really says anything. I love psychology! But he made me hate it. 3 open book tests, drops the lowest. No final. Boosts GPA, students love him for this.
He gives open note/book exams. Drops the lowest exam score. Big essay to turn in. His lectures are long. Don't bother taking notes when you go to class. He gives study guides. Easy class to pass.
94% and above is a solid A. He provides a study guide before each exam. You get to drop your lowest test. Class participation and/or emailing questions every week is important. Make sure he remembers who you are (it counts at the end). The lectures can get a little boring however theres a sign-in sheet so attending is mandatory. Would recommend.
One of those classes you really don't want to be in or ever show up for. He's just really bland and talkative. Doesn't use powerpoints in his class. Attendance is mandatory. Exams are super easy- he gives you a detailed study guide that'll help you pass. 2 exams and 1 is optional. You have to write a 13 page paper for his class.
He is astonishingly clear. First class day you receive a syllabus and idiot-proof instructions. Easy A if you simply follow the instructions. Lectures don't follow the book but are funny and very useful. Can't believe the people complaining about him. Are they conscious? Good class.
Lectures were long, but very easy class. Show up, participate, and make sure he remembers you. 3 easy open-book/note exams & he provides study guides. There's a 13 page research paper, but it's doable. Very reasonable professor and anytime I had a question/concern he was happy to help me. Very kind and extremely hilarious professor. Easy A class.
This professor deserves respect. He is the only one so far i know at csun that wants his students to enjoy the subject and want to learn. Unlike other professors who only care about how difficult their class can get or beating honors at harvard, he wants his students to use helpful concepts in everyday life.
Dr. Hamer is one of those professors that I will remember forever. His lectures were very informative and entertaining. His teaching style is something very different, but I liked it. No powerpoints. He is hilarious and motivated me to pursue a graduate degree in psychology. He is very knowledgable and experienced with abnormal psychology.
Honestly, easy class but boring as hell! He is funny at times but his lectures were long and boring.I took him for a two hour class so that might be it. Attendance is a must. His exams are open book so no way of failing unless you don't care. He doesn't use power points or follows the book at all very unorthodoxed way of teaching.
Test: 3 test, drop lowest, extra 15pt ea. test, gives extra pts for dropped test questions, gives study guide, open book test. Lectures don't have anything to do with class. Sign in sheet every lecture. Easy research paper (minimum 13pg, 10 ref) due at end of the semester on any topic. Ask questions for participation pts. at the end of the semester.
Expect lectures to be long and boring. You will def not learn anything in this class unless you read the book. All three of his exams are open book and open note. He provides a study guide, and you can use that on the test. Attendance is mandatory, and a full 13 page research paper
Tests are 100% material from the textbooks and 80% of your grade. Attendance is mandatory, yet lectures are 75% administrative Q&A from students who don't read the syllabus and 25% irrelevant subject matter. By irrelevant, I mean all of his thoughts and opinions and nothing that is on the exams. Also, there's a 13+ page paper with vague criteria.
So here is the deal. You show up and chill at his lectures, just for the participation and attendance credit. You read the book and teach yourself, but the book and any notes are available to you during the tests. If you cannot pass an open book test, than you are an idiot and do not deserve the free A he is handing out. The 13pg paper is easy too!
If you like to go to a class and just show up this is for you. You will not learn anything specific about the topic, (in this case motivational psychology) but you will learn some good info about life. Tests are open book, he drops the lowest, and there is 1 really easy research paper. If you want to learn a lot on the topic take another Teacher.
He is a sweetheart. Easy class to add to your double full time schedule. You need to show up in class, participation earns extra credit, and exams are open book and you just need to fill up the study guides.
Lectures are long and not related to class material. You'll need the textbook to do well especially given that the exams are open book and based solely on the book. Be aware that if you ask a question he will go on for about 30 minutes about something unrelated to your question. Exams have study guides. Midterm is a 13 page paper.
If you don't like lectures, get bored easily, this isn't the class for you, he's a funny guy but his class isn't for everyone. 3 tests, drops the lowest one, they're HARD and open book, need to STUDY! Also 13 page paper due at the end of the semester, I didn't do it and still got a B+, make sure to show up to class he records attendance for credit.
boring class, mandatory attendance, tests are open book/notes, but still difficult, participation matters, good guy but bad professor. not easy but easy B. lectures are completely unrelated to tests. take someone who you can learn from and get an A in class so you come to class for a reason.
Very good understanding of human psychology with a great amount of real world experience.
He's a funny guy who wants to teach about more than just the textbook.
If you don't care about learning and want the A this is the professor for you! Lectures are all about his personal life, rarely relevant. Open book tests, 13 to 16 page paper & attendance is mandatory. Read while he lectures & tab pages you'll easily pass exams. He openly states he does NOT read papers just marks done. Many leave after attendance.
Great teacher & class! Gives out study guide for midterms and final. Class attendance is mandatory takes role everyday and affects class participation if you miss class. All tests are open book and open notes. However, all tests are timed. Drops lowest midterm grade. Final paper is 7 - 10 pages.
If you want an easy A, this is the class for you. All tests are open book/open note. He gives study guides, so just fill in the concepts and definitions to use for the test. Bring other hw to do, his lectures have NOTHING to do with the course, and more about his personal life. Attendance is mandatory, 1 research paper 13 pages.
The best professor I ever had.
You have 3 open book exams that if you do well on the first 2 then you're not required to take the last one and a 15ish-page paper that I'm sure he doesn't read. I recommend another professor if Abnormal Psych is something you're interested in and only recommend him if you want an easy pass.
It's a very easy class. Three open-book exams and a 13 page research paper. You must come to the lectures for participation credit. He's a very nice guy and cares about his students but his lectures have no real substance to them most of the time. This man can talk for HOURS. Again, he is very nice though and I'm trying not to be too critical.
Such an insipriational professor. The day he turned the lights off, put music, had students guard the doors, and hypnotized us was truly memorable. I was transported to a rainforest in Brazil and I swam underneath a waterfall. I rode a unicorn over the Amazon. Pretty sure someone in the class lit up a joint during the hypnosis session. A+ guy
Very interesting real-world experience in the class sessions (mandatory, and an attendance sheet) but Professor Hamer tees it up for you, dude, all the material you're tested (open book/notes) on is given to you so if you're too lazy to get an A shame on you. Nice guy, obviously cares very much about his students.
He talks a lot and is hard to follow but he's a good and nice professor. His tests are fine as long as you study, but not necessarily easy. At the end he requires a 13 page research paper which was pretty difficult to write. He's an easy A overall.
Seriously great professor! It was worth taking the class to talk to him! It didn't even need to be about the class but life in general.
Literally a free 1 hour and 15 minute therapy session . Recommend taking him .
Fairly easy class that consists of 3 exams (lowest score is dropped) and one 13-page paper. His exams were a guaranteed A each time as long as you do the study guide. He responds to emails quickly and is always available to answer questions or for extra help. If you can, I 100% recommend taking him. Easy A!
This professor only talks in his lectures, there is no PowerPoint or point of the narrative in his teachings. He enforces you to keep your camera on during his lectures, yet he doesn't turn on his camera. To pass this class, is by reading the textbooks preparing for the exams and following the paper based on the requirements.
The grading guidelines seem loose and ever-changing but I truly believe Dr. Hamer just wants to leave wiggle room for students to get the grade they want. Send weekly emails, try to turn ur camera on sometimes and write one long paper. He "tortures" u during lecture but he's funny and you can tell he's intelligent and sincere. Positive psych based
I understand the very stark contrasts between students who rate him well and others who don't. In my opinion, I did not feel I took very much away from the class that was actually taught by him. You read a lot each week and are graded on that material and his lectures do not go over that information. His grading is confusing and he expects a lot.
I know he's a good guy but he isn't a good professor. His lectures have absolutely no connection to the readings you do and he has a 13 page APA paper that is due half way through the semester that he gives almost no guidance on. He also expects you to send an email a week with a question that he never responds to and he wants your camera on.
Overall very boring, you don't learn much except gratitude and dying. Not much HW is given, you just have to send the prof weekly participation emails(rly easy), 3 exams (1 is dropped). 13 page APA paper. and extra credit. All other reviews are accurate. Would recommend, but is a harsh grader.
I enjoyed listening to this man speak. He is very insightful and will always have wise words for us. The class is so easy that people may slack off, don't do that. A 13 page paper is not hard to do. Test guides cover everything but be careful as the answer may often be "x & y" or "all of the above". Easy extra credit available. -T.L.
It's a pretty chill class. Mainly participation and tests but he has a huge paper due. Lectures are interesting, I recommend participating in lectures. Overall, it was a pretty good class.
I did the CP questions, a research paper with more pages and resources than he expected (it was a good paper, too), at least 30/35 for both exams, & the two extra credit papers, didn't miss a single class, & I got an A-. I had a perfect 4.0 & now it's 3.9. I know it's still a good grade but I'm so sad about that. I don't think I deserved a minus.
If ur looking for a class that wont require much from you, then this is the class for u. No homework. Just three exams & a 13 page paper on a topic of ur choice. Lectures consist of him telling his own stories about 99.9% of the time, more like listening to a podcast. I learned everything I needed from the book, not the lectures. Easy A!
This guy is a mench! Not many professors like him left. A last of a dying breed, a man who holds online classes and demands participation. I really learned so much from him.
The best professor I've ever taken! Very interesting lectures. Dr. Hamer truly care for his students and is very respectful. I highly recommend him!
Literally the best professor! He is THAT girl. The exams are so easy if you read all of the material. He gives a clear guideline of what is expected of you in the syllabus. One 14-page paper and 3 exams. If you do well in the first 2 exams, then you don't have to take the 3rd. He gives life lessons and I found myself tearing up in class sometimes,
Most boring, useless class I have ever taken. He doesn't teach absolutely anything. The whole class is people talking about their lives. He speaks so slow it put me to sleep several times. You have to email a question every week that he will never answer and it has to be in a certain format. There is also a long 14 pg paper. So boring!
Very tough class.
Get ready to learn on your own. I hope you like having to do a 14 page research paper too.
He will make you write a paper so long, that if you wrote one page every week you still would come up short. Other than that, not a bad class.
3 exams 1 dropped, weekly assign., 14+ paper, 2 EC papers required for an A, attendance affects grade. Heavy amount of work required, if you have a busy schedule I would think carefully about taking this class. He's interesting but overall I did not enjoy his lectures. He is also very particular about his instructions & talks about them a lot.
Be prepared to dedicate an unreasonable amount of time on a 3-unit Gerontology class. You read 1 chapter from 2 books each week and send him a question via email that he won't even answer for participation, meanwhile expecting a 15+ page essay by the midterm. Lectures can be somewhat interesting but he always cuts you off when you ask a question.
Absolutely an awful professor who has almost OCD-like standards of how he expects his work done which is unreasonably extra. Also you have a massive paper due with little guidance and there is a ton of reading from the books.
I learned from the readings which is why I put a 2/5 and not 1/5. BUT, his lectures are a complete waste of time. Lectures are his stream of consciousness—just the ramblings of an arrogant older man. Do not even bother to ask a question, for he will likely cut you off and proceed to talk about something tangentially related for 5 to 10 minutes.
My favorite prof. Follow syllabus, come to class, participate, use the CSBS Writing Wizards Lab for help with paper. Had him for 310, 352. This will be by 3rd "A" with Dr Hamer.
he is very nice BUT the lecture does seem to be a to a big group therapy session in which we don't stay on topic. the paper is the main issue, 14+ pages (if you want an A), 10 sources, longest paper I have ever had to write here at CSUN and no actual grade given, extra credit is not optional if you want an A, so a must.
To piggyback off another comment about the extra credit, it's not extra credit. The points are already calculated into the grade scale therefore it's technically they are required assignments. EC points should not be calculated into the grade scale at all to be considered extra credit. Those should be added at the end of the semester.
Honestly had him on zoom and was not that bad if you listen to the lectures and do the readings. Participation emails are easy just read the required readings and submit it every week. More so the 14+ page paper is what was more difficult. If you pick a topic that is interesting you can honestly make it but it is a pain.
Dr. Hamer is kind and very intelligent. I appreciated that his class felt a bit like a therapy session at times. I know alot of students didnt like his style of teaching but I enjoyed it. The paper is really not that bad! He does it to prepare you for graduate school (if thats your plan) If you do everything you will be happy with your grade.
Dr. Hamer is kind and very intelligent. I actually appreciated that his class felt a bit like a therapy session .I know some students didn't like his teaching style, I personally enjoyed it. The paper is not bad!!!!!!l. If you stay on top of the work and give it your best effort, you'll likely be happy with your grade.
Idk why other students didn't like his class... I thought it was fairly an easy grade as he basically tells you that if you write X amount of pages then this will be your grade lol. He is an interesting character and is very kind and will always get back to you if you email him. Our class setup was 3 exams (pretty simple) and a 14 page essay.
literally paid good money just to hear this man yap on and on about anecdotes that vaguely relate to the material. take a different professor if you're actually interested in the subject.
his lectures are very loosely structured/doesn't flow, hardly answers questions.
Professor Hamer is kind and wants us to succeed. His lectures are done in a sort of podcast style, so you have to be well-read to contribute to the conversation. Imagine you are part of a podcast, both asking and answering essential questions to make it a good experience. The final paper is challenging; I learned a lot. Totally doable. An easy A.
Prof Hamer is kind and wants us to succeed. Imagine that you're part of a podcast, which would require you to be well-read on the topic so you can ask questions to draw out answers and be prepared to answer questions to demonstrate comprehension. The paper is challenging but doable and I learned a lot. Would take again.
Nice professor, but do not take him if you do not like or do well with the Socratic seminar teaching method. A lot of reading but it's manageable.
