I loved this class. He has a very practical teaching style. It is very possible to get an A in this class. If you go to the TA review sessions once or twice a week and understand the problem sets, then you will be set. I got a very strong A in the class. But I did spend some time learning the material and getting extra help. Highly recommended

I took this class twice.. the first time I absolutely hated it and had the grade to show it. I took it from Prof. Hansen the second time and enjoyed it a lot. Just do the problem sets and go to the TA's if you don't understand them. The TA's are extremely helpful. If you understand the problem sets you should do great in the class.

Marc Hansen is passionate about what he teaches and takes a very sensible approach to biology. What I most loved was how he focused on comprehensive understanding rather than regurgitation of facts. In class, instead of spoon feeding us material, he gave us questions often times that forced us as a class to think as a team and come up with answers.

Classes were good. All his assignments were worksheets, as well as the exams, which was frustrating sometimes because they were confusing. Also, the grading was annoying. Comprehension of the material, while encouraged in class, made little difference on assignments. Minus the grading, though, I would take another class from him.

This class is evolving and it shows. The lab is straightforward and fun. The lecture is a different story. There is no textbook. He doesn't seem to have a very good knowledge of physiology (which is the bulk of the lecture material). I'm glad I had already taken the more advanced classes or the class would have been a nightmare.

I never used the book in the class, however you can take whatever you want into the final and I used my anat/phys book which was a huge help. Course was fun and very educational but grading was a horror show. Worked hard, talked to TAs, put in 6-8 hours a week on assignments and 18 hours on the midterm and final. Had an A for 90% of the term, but during the last week it dropped to a C. Teaches at a 100 level, tests at a 400+ level. Grading system was extremely frustrating.

PDBio was great! its a pretty basic bio course, so the concepts aren't too hard. But your grade is mainly your test scores since there's basically no homework. And you have to go to class since there aren't slides and no textbook. But it's a good class and Hansen does care about his students

Good teacher and he knows his stuff, not a hard class and a fair grader. Wish there was more organization.

So much experience (has his own startup(s)) that some things went over my head. Lectures aren't really structured in any order, rather focused on our needs. First half of class is lecture, second half is group presentations. Take his feedback each week to steer your research all for the final pitch. You get out what you put in. A if deserved.

Straight up, he's an okay professor. He lectures and has the TA's teach some classes and go over problem sets. You could get a solid A through B if you do the work but he doesn't give a ton of feedback so it can be tough sometimes. Tests were take home so that was good.

Take home tests take off all stress. Teaches class as if everyone already knows the material from AP (I already knew it all, so it was easy. But I could see the confusion in those who haven't)."labs" are pointless discussions unrelated to exams (skippable) but nevertheless interesting. He knows a lot & is super chill, never any HW. Basic concepts.

This class wasn't a big stress which was super nice. No textbook either, which made lectures the only source of getting notes. TAs were nice and accessible but were no help preparing us for take home tests. 95 is an A so that made it a little tricky once test grades were in. Also tip if you take this class get the audio book for The Gene on Audible

Dr. Hansen was a great biology teacher. He focused on understanding concepts rather than memorizing terms. We worked in the same groups the entire class and the classwork was relatively easy. He tried to answer every question and was very flexible. Tests were also set up to be fairly easy. Overall a great intro class with great discussions.

Dr. Hansen's teaching style is different in that there is no textbook, all the content is given through his lectures. He's extremely knowledgeable (Cancer Research PhD from Stanford) and is enjoyable to learn from. There is not a lot of homework (difficult weekly problem sets done in groups), and the exams are take home and open note. Great class.

Dr. Hansen teaches the Bio-Innovations series which is a useful for anyone with a scientific background not wanting to pursue research, med school, or other professional degrees. You'll learn a lot and if you make progress every week, things will go smoothly. Get lazy, and he will not be afraid to let you have it in front of everyone.
