smart, witty, and intellectually stimulating
a good teacher, knows is stuff. he tells funny stories, and has funny hair...
Very entertaining class. Everything is in the book No need for notes just listen
very good professor...learned a lot....very straight forward as well
i hate history, but i liked this class
Very impersonal. Doesn't care about the individual student. Doesn't help.
Great lectures, funny personable guy. Exams a little tougher than most.
Relatively easy class - ask him for bonus and he might comply. Make sure you really explain and not just present material in your papers. And for fun, count how many times he says rectangular.
I went to about 3 classes the whole quarter and got a B

good guy, will bore you to death though. not a lot of presentation. funny guy though. and check out his hair.
tends to drone on in lecture, but generally an amusing guy. reading the book makes things more coherent
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is somewhat amusing but I learned very little from him, if anything at all.
He talks too fast, goes on tangents a lot and pretty boring. I learned very little in his class even though I went everyday. His tests are tough...prepare to write fast and lots.
Pretty funny guy. I think he drank too much caffeine... couldn't stand still for a second! Interesting lecture, but went on lots of tangents. Make sure you read the book and go into lots of details and explanation in essays.
Good professor, knows material and even makes up a word or two every now and then to keep the class entertained.
nice guy, lectures are pretty boring but he seems really to enjoy teaching. Class is also pretty easy. Good professor overall.
Very lively but lectures are very vague and broad and somewhat pointless. Follow the syllabus, attend recitation and rigously study for exams using the study guide provided and you'll be fine.
He was boring! I enjoy history and he did not make history very enjoyable. He does not communicate with his TA's, and your grade just depends on your TA, and last winter I had the WORST TA ever, so it just depends on you TA. Lecture is pointless.
think SNL's Mr. Peepers meets That 70's Show's Red Foreman (for lack of hair)...and this is the degree to which you begin to see this sort of thing....take the class and you will understand this!!!
Must learn how to take notes from what he says, not writes. I would recommend the essay version of the class considering the exam version is a lot more work. Also, the TA is the MOST important person in the class grade wise.
Sporadic. Annoying. Learned Little. Tests suck. Don't bother taking him.
I've had him for 2 quarters, i suggest the essay version. Lectures are pointless, he just rambles, don't even bother writing whats on the board. And you need the custom textboob ($60) that you can't sell back. Get a different teacher!
exams are a breeze if you just follow his study guides. Horger's intelligent and amusing but most of this is lost on his auditorium full of sleeping freshmen.
not very clear at lecturing but is an interesting guy. CAFFEINE FEINE. take the essay version of the course and hope your TA is good.
He's not the greatest of lecturers, but sometimes he tries to make it interesting. "This is to the degree you see this sort of thing" does get annoying though. But I had a good TA both quarters and came out with an A- and A respectively. No comp
essay version is a breeze. very energetic but hard to follow. smart and intelligent guy. TAs are important. Exams will be fine if you follow the study guide, which is provided and discussed in rec. to make sure you know it front to back.
The class isn't that hard, but my grade only depended on my TA and my TA graded harshly. Make sure you study and be ready for pop quizzes in recitation.
he believes that history 151 is the place to spout off his political beliefs. he is wrong.
He knows history well and teaches it well, but he has so much energy and talks so fast that it is sometimes hard to follow him. He does do a GREAT job at making one of the most boring subjects interesting though
He was really unclear and I hated my TA. I wouldn't recommend taking this class with Horger. Take Hist 111 & 112 so that you get the diversity credit. Don't waste your time with Horger. He is like a rabbit on speed. He jumps around a lot!!!
He does have a lot of energy. His lectures can be hard to follow because he gets ahead of himself and then forgets to return to his original thought. His knowledge of the material is unquestionable. Lectures are lively and informative. Test are reasonable. I do believe he is a socialist.
go to lecture. go to lecture. go to lecture. TAKE NOTES. That's the key to his essay version class because you'll have everything you need. Very easy if you pay attention and take good notes. He's a little hyper...and he does drop hints about his political agenda (very liberal) which is annoying
Extremely knowledgable, places subjects in the greater global movements, slips in jabs at the right wing (if you ask, he'll definitely back it up), TA graded essay exams for content (largest part of class grade), as well as English proficiency. 7 page paper, small 1 page papers. Essay class=4days/wk
Lecture was so boring and repetitive. Long essay tests that you dont really know how it will be graded. Had a horrible TA and was quizzed in recitation every week. Just a bad class that was harder than it should have been.
marc horger is a nice guy when he's NOT teaching history. when he is teaching history he is boring as F*CK. i seriously wanted to take my own life. we wrote 2 papers and had an essay final. the TA's graded everything. i DON'T recommend him. he seriously has a cup of coffee every damn day.
lecture an absolute bore..75% of stuff u don't need to know. TA's do EVERYTHING and everything is in accordance to what they want, Horger has nothing to do w/ u except his rambling on in lecture. appears a harder class on the surface then it really is. just participate/listen in recitation & ur fine
SO BORING!! Avoid him.
horrible teacher get out while you can
Didn't even open the require texts for these classes and got an A- and A, respectively. Go to lecture, take notes. If you can write, it's a cakewalk.
Aviod if possible. Really bad lecturer, i can tell he is interesting and smart but very unclear as a teacher. He draws strange pictures to illustrate points. very bizarre. But sometimes made funny simpsons/south park comments
I think that he is extremely interesting and full of energy for the class that he teaches. He does have a civil rights agenda to be gotten out of the class. Try to get a good TA and that will help immensely with the understanding of the class.

If you want to see maps of stuff that will not help you at all then take this class. Smart guy, but his tests are sort of ridiculus for the amount of time you get to take them. The TAs grade inconsistantly, so maybe that it was why I had such a bad experience with it.

GET OUT NOW! Lecture is a waste, you're only graded on papers&essays. He's obnoxious, makes no sense, & writes tiny on a chalk board expecting people to write down his ridiculous notes from across a lecture hall.
The lectures are a waste of time. However one of the recitation teaching assistants Lawrence Bowdish was great!!!!
Horger is ok. His lectures are very interesting. His slides are mostly of maps. He makes really funny faces, though. The midterm was pretty easy for the amount of time I spent studying. Go to lecture just because he sometimes does attendance.
terrible. just plain terrible.
this guy is awful, you will learn everything you need to know from the TA NOT his lectures.
He's average
His powerpoint presentations were all over the place. He went on random stories about his problems with different Presidents. If I were to take the class again I would not go to class as it does not help you out as you are learning on your own anyways.
All he did was show maps and complain about George Bush.
He is very interested in history and shows it in class during lecture. He is not the best person to learn from for the tests but you learn other useful knowledge by going to lecture. If you get a good TA (the person who grades your very important paper) you will get a good grade.
HILARIOUS, intelligent, and makes lectures fun. Not fun if you are devoid of humor and life. Grade depends on TA though
Alright instructor just kind of boring. he trys to make class interesting by linking stuff to south park and the simpsons but it doesnt work.
Was very interested in teaching...related a lot of stuff to current situations. Tried to make history as exciting as it can be. The midterm wasn't TOO bad but the final was just insane!
The class wasn't that bad, but he talks REALLY fast. You are constantly writing (that is, if you're trying to take notes on what he's talking about). It definitely depends on your recitation teacher though!!!! They grade everything, but the class really isn't that bad. Write everything you can think of on the exams.
he's very arrogant and i found it very hard to like him. also i had him in lecture 5x a week- don't do it!
Lectures were BORING and strayed from what was relevent in the reading...a lot of info you really don't need to know for the exams. I really depended on my TA for instruction in this class. Keep up with the reading and his class is easy.
If you like someone who is sarcastic and a bit edgy, this is the teacher for you. He likes to relate the class to current events but can stray from the topic at hand. Definately read and you should do fine. papers are graded by TA's so it really depends! Exams aren't impossible, but do take some studying to do well. Overall good class!
he's ok
Lecture isn't necessary. Your TA either makes or breaks your grade.
Your entire grade depends entirely on your TA. It is not necessary to attend class all of the time, as long as you study for the exams (use the textbook). Understand exactly what your TA is looking for and you'll do fine.
this guy is addicted to coffee, but other than that not bad. he lectures off of power point the whole time, and tells decent stories. Also has a good sense of humor.
your grade does depend on your TA. Going to lecture and taking notes makes the tests a breeze. Don't buy that RTAP book. I never used it and got an A, just go to class and you're good!
your grade depends entirely on your TA, you do not need to go to lecture....it does absolutely nothing for your grade....good luck on a good TA
not that hard of a class. sure the grade depends on the TA because they grade papers/exams and such, but it actually mostly depends on you. SUCK UP PEOPLE when a TA is grading an essay he reads the name first. even if subconsciously, they will be an easier grader on you if they know your name and know you read and participate.
Don't buy the RTAP. You won't use it and the book store won't take it back. I wish I would have listened to the comments on this page before buying the 57 dollar book. Don't go to lecture....it has nothing to do with the exams.
I took his class last year and he was easy to like. He did talk REALLY fast but he does make connections to modern stuff so you'll remember it. Grade does depend on TA. if your TA grades hard you're screwed. All you grades are based on essay midterms and a paper or two. The RTAP is a waste of money, so make a friend in the class and share it w them
I found his lectures surprisingly interesting. He made a boring subject pretty enjoyable to learn about. I would definately take another class taught by him if I could.
The grade you get truly depends on your TA. I hate history and managed to get an A because my TA liked the way I wrote. Apparently I did learn something from the class since I got an A! But honestly Horger is very ADD in class, running around a lot, but he knows what he's talking about and knows how to make it relevant to us. :)
Don't go to lecture. I got an A in the class without going to lecture, just do the studyguide. I didn't read the books for the paper either and got an 88 on it. easy class i would definently take it
This class is very easy. You don't need to go to class or read the books. I finished the paper without reading a page of the book it was on and got an A.
did not learn anything for his lectures, stopped going after first couple of weeks. grade depnds on your TA!!!
He is an interesting guy to listen to. If you want to learn about politics then go to lecture because that is all the guy talks about, otherwise it is not needed. The only history you learn is what your TA talks about or what you read, as Horger strictly talks politics. The grade depends on your TA. I got an A in the class without much effort.
easiest class i've ever taken in my life. grade depends on ta. good gec-lectures aren't too bad, extremely easy subject.
I would say take this class, I just took it Spring 2008 and I never went to lecture. Just go to the recitations and do the hw and you get a B. If you do attend lecture then you will prolly get an A. He has really dry humor and class was at 8:30 a.m. so I had no motivation to go. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!!!, TAKE THIS CLASS.
Hardest class I have taken so far BECAUSE your grade is in the hands of your TA. The exams are all essay and really hard. I went to all lectures and recitations and got a C. He expects you to write down everything he says and memorize it.
horger's class is hard because its totally essay based. I pulled a C+ and got lucky. I have friends that went to every class and took really good notes and still did poorly. He also does not provide power points and you have to just write down wat he says which is often hard because he likes to ramble.
He likes to ramble and they makes it hard for taking notes. His powerpoints are of no use really, but they still help. I had an awesome TA which is why I got a B. She was super helpful.
Caffine fueled, extremely knowledgable about subject. Fun lectures. Grade depends on TA, mine was was intense & tough. Wish he did a recitation tho, would have liked that better. TA was too demanding and offered no extra credit. Marc was great!
His exams are all essay based while other professors teaching the same class have multiple choice exams. I would not recommend this class.........EVER
way too much reading.. had to buy four books, hard to follow. very knowledgeable but bad at relaying it to students. All essays for grades.
Too much reading and your grade depends completely on your TA because it's all based on essays and papers. Horger likes to ramble, bash on conservatives, suck on suckers and throw his keys at his pointless slide shows. Two thumbs down. He should lay off the caffeine.
Chugs too much caffeine during lecture, and ramlbes too much. All around knowledgeable in his field, but goes off on too many tangents. I learned WAY more in our discussions with the TA. PRO: Tests were decent though, as long as you look over the study sheet, you'll be good to go. CON: WAY too much reading assigned.
Great Professor! Lectures are fun, & clearly illuminate the concepts. Read the book, attend class. If you have questions, Dr. Horger will help you. The TAs are also very helpful. Both Dr. H and TAs are well prepared. I learned alot in this class.
I'm a sophomore with a 3.5 GPA and I felt pretty confident going into this class. I was wrong. Prof. Horger is an extremely intelligent man, but a horrendous professor, given this is a 100 level class. He rambles and DOES NOT GIVE ANY NOTES. I felt in the dark the entire quarter. I know others that are in 151 with different professors, AVOID HORGER
This guy does no care about his students. No notes. I tried to email him with a simple question for a midterm paper and he responded with "Read the Book."...nothing nice to say about this guy...go in another direction.
I had him for 398, and he was a very easy grader and took time out for every student. The no notes thing might have been tougher in a different class though.
Tends to ramble. His lectures are not useful. If you want to learn the material, you just need to read the books. And lecture does not even matter because your grade is determined entirely by the TA. The TA grades the midterm, paper, and final. I would try for another prof for Hist152
Dr. Horger is a nice guy and always tries to keep lectures interesting. His lecture notes aren't all that helpful, however if you actually listen to him he explains things very well and I found it useful. Everything (midterm, paper, final) is graded by the TA though. Overall I did enjoy this class.
History of Sports was not what I thought it was going to be. However, you won't find a professor more knowledgeable in his field that Dr. Horger. His lectures consisted of him mostly talking. A large amount of reading was required for the class. Two papers and two exams made up the whole grade. He is a very fair grader and provides good study guide
Great professor
Considering how boring the material is, he did a great job with getting the info across. Go to lecture!! He uses common metaphors throughout everything and refers back to them so you can understand everything as a whole by the end of the class. Read the textbook; he notices when you do and gives you better grades because of it. Nice guy.
Fair grader but lectures are terribly long, boring, and irrelevant. Way too much reading, had to buy 8 books and didn't read any.
Lectures were very boring! He did grade exams and paper very easy. A lot of books required, but barely read them and still got an A. He does know his information
Awful. Just awful. Having to write TWO 6-8 page papers for an online GEC was ridiculous. Don't take this class.
Awful class to take at 8am. The whole class is just him rambling, and not including class in discussion. He knows the material, but doesn't teach very well. Powerpoint slides do not make sense when studying for exam, so TRY to take notes based off of his rambling lectures. Decent grader, but is really stiff on guidelines. Papers are tough. 5-7pgs
Online class taken as a GE. There were no exams at all, instead there were 8 papers (two 6-8 pg papers). He is a difficult grader and the class is treated like a senior level English course. If you don't like writing DO NOT take this course. However, if you like learning about the beginning of football, baseball, and boxing you may like the course.
He is a good teacher. There is a midterm, final and two 5-7 page papers. You definetley need to get the books. Don't always need to read but books are essential for papers and exams. Exams are essay forms.
Took this class as an online GE for my major. HUGE MISTAKE. Yes, he does know the material, but 2 5-8 page papers and numerous 2-4 page papers make this class not a good choice when it comes to GEs.
This is a terrible Gen Ed class to take. Two long papers (5-8 Pages) at the end that are not worth the Gen Ed requirement. All of the other assignments (2-4 Page Papers) are graded extremely difficult. If you do end up emailing him with a question, he responds quickly but that is the only positive I have. Would not recommend to anyone.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. It is a terrible Gen Ed to take. Not worth the time at all, papers and readings will have you swamped. He's a good professor, but gives way too much work and grades harder than any english or lit class I have taken
He is not clear at all. The dreadful videos are so hard to follow. He seems as if he is trying to rush through it. He also kinda seems like he thinks you already know what he's talking about. His essay/term paper prompts are extremely vague. He will usually give you one topic, and you must write 5-8 pages on a single topic. Awful. I was miserable.
Super boring class, especially at 9 AM. Books are a must as you need them for difficult papers. He is a super nice guy and loves his own jokes, but your probably wont. Attendance is also key for the class. Two 5-8 page papers that are very painful.
Very tough grader. He seems very knowledgeable, however, it can get boring. Beware of papers. For the online class, he posts his own lectures...
OK this is the only review you'll need for our friend Dr. Marc. Bottom line - take his class. I've taken two of his now and I have gotten an A in both. Go to lecture. Get the books but don't read them (only need to skim for quotes 2 papers not hard he is an easy grader. Take some notes during class and translate that on 2 written tests. EASY A
He expects a lot for a month long online class that is just a gen ed. There were so many papers with two of them being quite lengthy. It is not worth the work and I am planning on avoiding his classes in the future.
There are a total of 8 papers, in which all of them are EXTREMELY tedious to write. The given materials for the papers are several several pages long/from the 1800's so nearly impossible to read. Writing 6-8 pages on very specific themes is pretty difficult/ a total waste of time compared to taking a course that you can get an easy A in.
He is a very smart guy but you get sooo much reading to do. There are impossible amounts of reading to do weekly if you are also taking other real classes. There are also around 10 papers to write throughout the semester that range up to 10 pages in length. There are much easier history classes to take if you are looking to fill your GE requirement
As a sports fan I was hoping this class would be more interesting than it was. Lectures are very detailed and lots of reading is assigned. All assignments are essays, and Horger is a tough grader with confusing feedback. Is a somewhat time consuming class, so wouldn't recommend for an easy GE.
Very dry Material, and engagement in class through papers is not exciting.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. Took the online course so every assignment was just essays based on the online lectures and reading materials. When he grades he takes off points for reasons not relating to the actual argument you're trying to make. Also takes weeks to grade papers. Comments aren't constructive, just bashes on you. Got a B
5th year history student here. I write papers. I like papers, especially on more bizarre topics. Why tell you this? Because this class made me hate writing. And papers. And history. And sports. And anything that happened in the 1800s. I was just trying to pad my grade before graduation with an easy online course. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Not the most exciting class, lots of required reading that you dont have to do. You only need the books for the papers. He doesnt grade the papers hard, Exams are graded easy.
Feedback is frustrating; his responses come off very condescending and unsympathetic. Be sure to buy the books, but only skim them for the papers/tests, dont read everything; theyre boring! Only four grades in the class: two papers, midterm and final. VERY EASY GRADER. Lectures are boring. Take IN CLASS, NOT ONLINEHe said he makes online harder!
There are a lot of books he has you buy read throughout the semester. He rambles about things that do not seem to make sense or have relevance. Be sure to take notes on what does seem to make sense and google what doesnt (or what wasn't covered). Only grades in this class is attendance and the exams. Must understand the exam prompt ahead of time
This class is ALLLLL about writing papers so if you don't like papers DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Although the class itself was pretty easy and the content was easy to understand bc we just watched him lecture, your grade is based solely off of 6 or 7 papers.
Grade is based on 7 essays, the first few based off of one reading assignment, and they become more complex, with the term paper (5-8 pages) and final (6-9). A lot of reading, as long as you do most of it youll be fine. Lectures have helpful info for the papers. Not a tough grader but gives 1 comment. Dont procrastinate and youll survive
Honestly had some of my greatest and unique feedback in college from his class. Very laid back. Don't feel afraid to reach out for thoughts on a paper before submission. Also don't put off papers to the last minute and you'll enjoy this class.
This course is overall very simple, only being graded on your papers. He grades fairly easy as long as you include the information asked and meet the length requirement. The course readings and slideshows are useful, but not required during the course and I even found it easier to just do overviews of each.
Professor Horger mandates lectures that benefit you in no way. He constantly tells you to draw information from the readings, not lectures. Even if you did use the lectures, you'd be at a loss because he constantly goes on tangents. He assigns absurdly long papers for an entry-level history class. His class takes too much time to be worth taking.
Horgers lectures were utter useless as all the essays were based on readings only and the only thing graded the entire semester was 4 essays. The essays were also extremely long and there was soooooo many readings that were all extremely lengthy.
There are 7 papers total in the class (that's it). There are a lot of readings assigned per module. As long as you read at least one per module, you will be okay. As long as you watch the lectures and at least skim the readings, you will have enough essays. He is a fair grader. I would not recommend it if you don't like sports or essays.
Class consists of 7 papers. Most of which are very short (a page or less) but the final two papers are each 5-8 pages. Dont take if you mind writing essays. As long as you understand the modules and apply his ideas to the papers, youll receive a good grade.
Horger's class is overall easy as it is just based on a few papers. The lectures are required but pretty useless as most of the essays are about the readings. If you put in a little effort it is very easy to get an A.
Lectures are pretty dry and boring, attendance is mandatory as he makes you send him a code every class. Only 4 papers the whole semester which were pretty easy, just on the readings and lectures.
For a history class, the content is pretty interesting. I took his class online and it consisted of 7 essays. 5 shorter papers, a term paper (5-8 pages) and a final paper (6-9 pages). The topics of each essay are pretty easy. He is not a super tough grader. Hard to get an A but hard to get below a B on papers. Not the worst class, but not the best.
Professor Horger is a great lecturer who may lecture a little too much. The entirety of the class is him talking about more of the business and spectator aspect of sports, so if you think that you'll just be talking ball the whole time, you are wrong. There are 4 papers: a midterm, final, and two other essays. Grading criteria is strict.
Not a great lecturer, they are pre-recorded and are pretty dry, but he is very understanding and helpful if you email him. 5 short essays, a 5-8 page midterm, and a 6-9 page final essay make up your total grade. There is a lot of material to read and watch, but he isn't a super harsh grader. As long as you put in some effort, it's an easy A.
Professor Horger tends to spend a little too much time on his lectures and rarely provides time for questions to be asked during class. There are only four assignments that are graded: two essays, a final and a midterm. Beware that he does not just talk about sports the entire time.
Great professor. I have taken Dr. Horger for two classes now. Similar format, graded on 6-8 papers. Anywhere from two paragraphs to 9 pages. Free 100 points just for turning in all assignments. Helpful lectures. Lots of reading, just skim to help write essays. Accessible outside of class. Topic is dull but he makes your research meaningful.
I took this class because I don't mind writing papers so none of the assignments were too big of a hassle for me. I never did the readings and just skimmed them when it came time to write the papers. Content was generally interesting I just listened to the lectures in 1.5x.
The lectures can be a bit dry, but Horger is understanding and helpful if you reach out. With some textbook readings and a few essays, it's an easy A as long as you put in the effort. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing the essays.
7 Papers for the semester. Uses lecture videos from COVID.
Great guy overall, cares about the topic he teaches and isn't that hard of a grader.
I took this for a GE and the lectures were very boring and the class required a lot of reading. The final grade was made up of 4 papers and an attendance grade. He is a fairly easy grader and as long as you put in at least a little effort, you will be fine. I don't necessarily recommend this class, but if you don't hate writing it is an easy A.
Fully online history of sport course. Lots and lots of reading and then writing about that reading. don't take this class if you can't handle a lot of boring reading.
I was in his history of sport in 20th century, in person class. Attendance is necessarily not mandatory but it is part of your grade. His lectures can be somewhat long and boring but if you take notes you will be fine. There were only 4 papers and that was it.
I took this course online, and he provided like three-word feedback, no matter what grade he gave me. The content was fine, and there were hardly any assignments. He just gives you no advice on how to improve your writing. I would take it again if I had to, but it was just annoying.
so many long readings and papers it was insane. gave some feedback on assignments but overall a very work heavy class.
Dr Horger only assigns papers, no other assignments. The articles given are blurry and usually lack so much information. He is a semi-difficult grader. He does not give good feedback. He usually will respond to emails in a timely manner. All of the subjects are boring, and it has barely anything to do with sports.
Overall he's is a great professor. As long as you attend class you will do well.
