Do not take this class unless you are looking for trouble. He does not explain topics clearly and fills in class time with pointless class work. Midterm was difficult and most of the class did poorly. His critical book review paper also was a pointless assignment, which he did not explain clearly resulting in the class doing poorly yet again.

great professor! really clear and very entertaining. one of the few professors who can make a 200-person lecture worth your time. you do have to work hard outside of class to do well, but if you can do that you should be fine. and if you can't, you shouldn't be in college anyway.
terrible teacher
Very hard teacher, u will not stop writing the entire class. he doesnt wait for students he keeps his own pace which is very hard to keep up with..very strict on attendance and he uses the iclicker to take it as well as he asks questions thorughout the lecture that are graded..intersteting class just wish he slowed down and didnt make it as hard
terrible teacher...mandatory attendance every class. He puts notes on an overhead for you to copy but goes way to fast and will never go back if you didn't get it all. Tests are entirely too complex for this type of course and the recitations go over nothing related to class material. If you can avoid this class definitely do.
Okay, all these complaints are stupid. Yeah, he won't slow down the notes for people during lecture, but it's a 200-person lecture. If he did that we'd learn nothing. You're also allowed to miss 3 classes. I crammed the morning of for the 2 exams and did the book review the night before it was due and I got an A. My secret? Attending class.
He is a great guy! He has an adoable son and makes class enjoyable. He is extremely fair and really loves what he does. He makes class enjoyable and the subject matter interesting. He is a great professor! Take his class!
All these comments about how hard his class are clearly coming from idiots who can't handle a 100 level psc class. Try taking a 300 level Cold War Politics class He's really interesting & clearly cares about what he's doing and his students. He doesn't take any sh*t from students and expects responsibility (which he should from college students)
One of the best professors in the department. You can tell he loves what he does and cares about his students. His lectures are very clear and entertaining, and his grading is fair. I'd highly recommend his American Foreign Policy class!
Great guy, LOVED the class. Exams are no cake walk, know your book and notes back and forward, but overall all the material was covered. Essay is easy if you have the right TA, make sure you talk to the guy, he's pretty interesting, and his daughter is adorable. Would definitely take him again.
This class was great!!! Just make sure you read your text book...KEEP UP!!! 3 Tests in his class so study study study=A
He's awesome. Really helpful and easy to learn from. Using the textbook can be avoided, but he'll know. The way the class is structured, you can get a good grade putting in 3 or 4 hours of work per week. He's highly recommended though, easy to follow and very interesting.
Great professor for COLD WAR POLITICS. Easy to follow yet very interesting. Solid energy during lectures keeps audience engaged. Anthesis of an egg head professor who will put you asleep. Highly recommend the C W P class, dually taught with Prof. Petro, good counterbalance to Petro's heady lectures, the two do quite well together good banter
Awesome professor, very interesting class. He couldnt be any clearer in explaining the material. Exams are not that hard really, just review key terms from the textbook and you'll be fine.
great class!! as long as you go and take notes and do the reading you will do fine. tests are tough, but only go over stuff he talks a lot about. be prepared to get hand cramps from all the writing. he never advocates one political view over another, which is becoming hard to find. recitations are kind of pointless.
A quite pompous individual. When not referring to Napoleon, his boyfriend, or there relation to Freddie Mercury or Elton John. He is a great teacher, smart, and knows cold war politics to the point of schizophrenia but as a human being ranks negative four out of one through ten in my book
Great professor! Great class. Very well organized, although class time is a little short for all the information we cover. Recitation was HORRIBLE. DO NOT take Rebecca Looney as your TA (if she still does it next year). Hutchison is awesome. Very good person, funny, smart.
Class Was interesting and teacher was funny
My favorite professor in the poli sci department. He's lectures are interesting and he is funny and makes it easy for you to stay interested. His forgien policy class is by far my favorite class i have taken at URI. he is a fair grader and it very willing to help if you go and see him at his office hours
best professor in the department - hands down.
Interesting and clear. He's like a breath of fresh air after Petro's long winded lectures. He puts key terms on the board so you can follow his lectures easily. Although attendance isn't taken every day, the majority of the material you need to know is in both his and Petro's lectures. Go to class and you'll do just fine.
All this class is do lots of readings...talk about readings..summarize the readings...I could have just taken a book and read on my own. Likes to give readings his friends at UK did. Tough Grader. I think sometimes he did not read my work. In the end, just an ok class. Nothing special. Please don't tell students to go for a phd. It hurts.
Stay away
He's smart but is not a fair grader. He has his favorites and gives the good grades to them. He's a good guy outside of class and is very helpful on the content, but only the favorites get A's.
Read the last Posters comments...in my 580 class he called on the same people all the time. In fairness, they did take many classes with him. I would not take a grad class with him unless you took him in undergrad. He love IR theory..loves it. Definitely favored people in my class. I decided to get my masters at another college due to such issues.
The class in general is that he is an extremely good teacher, if you put in effort you will do ok in the class. Saying that, his exams are pretty hard, the avg for his exams was a 78. There were many who scored in the 90's,just make sure you put effort into studying.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE
He is an excellent professor- not only is he brilliant in his subject, but he's a gifted and engaging speaker as well. The tests are tricky- esp. the multiple choice, but he makes up for it in the straightforwardness of his essays. I took this class as a GenEd and would strongly recommend it to anybody considering doing the same.
He's great - make sure you get a good TA, though. I got lucky and heard horror stories from other students
great teacher. he's very clear when teaching & tries to make his lectures amusing. GO TO CLASS THOUGH. he grades you on it. i probably took about 40 pages of typed notes in his class & his study guide is useless since it's basically everything you study, but do your work & you'll do fine. also, try to get a good TA because you'll see a lot of them.
the best professor ive had in my 3 years at this school. he makes every class interesting and his lectures are engaging. most important advice for any of his classes GO TO LECTURE. most of the info is not from the book its from lecture.
Great lectures, made everything clear and interesting. Must attend lectures to do well. Best class I took freshmen year
One of the greatest educators I have ever had the please of meeting. Very knowledgeable and truly cares about his students and the subject. He is specific as to what he wants on exams but as long as you pay attention you won't have a problem. You can ask any political science student why they are a polysci major and 90% will say because of him.
Hutch is a dedicated and knowledgeable professor, and just old school enough to know you are getting your moneys worth! (Unless you are a slacker) take him without reservation.
Look, the guy is into his career, not his students. And while he 'likes' IR he is hardly worldly. While OK I would really like more global inspiration than this guy. To me he seems calculating and insincere. Sorry, that's just my take.
Tough class, but a great class. You learn a lot and improve your writing and comprehension skills. Take his class and you will enjoy it
LOVE THIS GUY. The material can be a little challenging because there is a lot but recitation helps quite a bit. Very clear in lectures and is a pretty funny guy too. Take the class, it is great!
Marc Hutchison expects you to put all your time into his class. There is only a midterm and final exam with a ridiculous amount of information to memorize. He gives you a useless study guide so you basically have to memorize 8 chapters. Terrible professor. Waste of time.
Great professor! If you don't have an interest in IR I can understand why you might not be into his class, but hes a great professor with very engaging lectures. Textbook wasn't that important, most material was from class notes and attendance is definitely important. One of my favorite classes at URI so far. Good amount of studying required though
Like URI, not worldly, alas. This guy is much more into his own little world and lacks a kind of international depth that people like myself (an intl student) get right away. He might impress certain powers at URI but I still like to think that URI can do better/pay more attention to the kind of faculty they are hiring. 116 needs more...
Professor Hutchison is the MAN. If you are looking to take this class as a social science class definitely take it. His lectures are interesting and he makes them easy to understand. Recitation for this class is pretty helpful. Just show up take notes and you should have no trouble at all passing.
Probably the best professor I have had so far at URI. Definitely going to take his higher level courses.
Prof. Hutchison is my fav professor at URI so far. He is really into the material and keeps class entertaining. Make sure you take notes on all the slides & go to class tho, bc you use the clicker for attendance & the tests are really tough so you def need your notes. This class is challenging bc of the tests but it really gets you into polisci!
This class required a lot of work for a 100-level general education requirement. The exams require a lot of studying; the study guide contains every topic, most of which won't appear on the exam. If this is just a gen. ed., opt out a different class.
I've taken 2 classes taught by Dr. Hutchison. For PSC350, attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post slides or notes, so you'll have to listen attentively to transcribe all of the content he gives in the lectures. A plethora of textbooks were issued but honestly read your class notes and Google the main events and you'll be covered. Decent guy.
Talks like a buzz-feed article, needs some charisma. Overall he is fairly easy.
Marc is a great professor, he gets you the information, has informed slides and a balance of seriousness and humor. The tests are pretty hard, but if you actually go to class and take notes, then the tests are tolerable. He uses TopHat, so there are pop quiz questions and electronic attendance every class. I would take this class again.
He balances out lecture, media presentations, and discussion. The in class simulation is really interesting and fun.
Attendance isn't mandatory but he uses TopHat and gives at least 4 quiz questions a day and doesn't post the notes online. His exams are very challenging and specific but if you go to class and take all the notes, youll have a great chance. He adds a good sense of fun and entertainment into his lectures as the content can put you to sleep sometimes
I've never struggled so much in a class that I put so much effort into. His study guides are completely listing the names of the chapters we went over in class and they don't help at all. He gives you so much to study it's impossible to remember it all and the grading of the exams are horrible because the TAs do it and want you to write EVERYTHING.
By far the HARDEST class I have ever taken at URI. It's a requirement for Political Science majors and for a 100 level course, this class is ridiculous. Great professor who is passionate about what he teaches but I imagine this is what most 400 level classes are like.
For a 100 level gen-ed course at URI, I was stressed about it all semester. The amount of content to study on the exams is ridiculous & impossible to remember it all. The exams are based on short answers & essay questions which make matters worse. If you take ALL of the notes in lecture, you'll have everything needed for the exams, it's just A LOT.
This was a tough class to say the least. The professor is good, but the material is something else. If you are not into politics this will be a tough gen ed. Worked so hard for a B- and I can't complain.
This course is definitely not an easy A, but it is very do-able. The amount of content to study on the exams is a lot, but his study guides and review sessions help! The exams are based on short answers & essay questions. The recitation is a great grade booster . Hutch is a funny guy never boring. If you put in the effort you can succeed.
Lots of work especially for a 100 level class, wouldn't take if it weren't mandatory for major. Mostly theory but isn't presented in a cohesive way. TAs didnt even know the info without looking at their notes. Fine professor, but exams are extremely hard essay plus short answer- 50 min exam) the material is not a good overview of Int'l politics.
Dr. Hutchison the rare professor who can command a lecture of hundreds and yet make you feel seen, heard, and appreciated as a student. He is invested in student success, gives clear advice, and assigns valuable reading material. His exams (essay / short answer) are some of the most fun I've had! Highly suggested for anyone interested in politics.
Awesome Professor, would highly recommend taking any class that he teaches.
Super interesting class (PSC116) and Hutch is a funny dude, he makes lectures super engaging. There's no homework and very few reading quizzes but you really have to study for exams (there's only 3 including the final)
He's a great lecturer, funny and humorous, HOWEVER, he doesn't grade your exams, or the big paper you have to write. His TA's do it. So pay attention to recitation, get to know your TA and the kind of writing styles they like, because your exams have essays and the TAs are the ones who grade them.
You definitely have to study to do well on exams, but the lectures are enjoyable. There are extra point opportunities, but you have to show up to lectures.
I took PSC 113 in the fall of 2017 with Moakley and compared to that this was a walk in the park.
A really good professor, and a really good class. The class is huge, so you have to be ready for that, but I had a lot of fun. You do have to study, obviously, but I didn't study a ton (few hours right before each exam) and I still got A's on all three. If you don't skip a lot, you probably won't regret taking this class.
Amazing class and really engaging professor. You're only graded by your exams and for a couple smaller things in recitation. The exams are difficult because you need to study lots of material to pass, but start preparing early and you'll be fine. It's not unreasonable. I decided to minor in poli sci because of this class.
Professor Hutchison is absolutely amazing. His lectures are very easy to follow, and he makes the class fun by keeping you engaged with quick class questions to answer on TopHat. I would definitely recommend anyone taking him, especially if you're looking for an easy Grand Challenge class to take.
Participation saved me, so go to class and do Top Hat. If you don't study for the exams they're pretty difficult and he focuses a lot of it on terms he goes over in class. Teaches till the last minute too
Great prof that engaged the class well and really inspired the class to learn. He runs a simulation in class and it is the best part of this class. the only draw back is he only teaches PSC 434 in the summer but it was still a fun class. Be prepared to read and don't put off the final paper because it will be a long paper.
Great professor, took him for an elective course and made me love it. The only grades he gives are TopHot credit and the Exams, and then the Recitation grade. He takes attendance, but you need to go to class to get the notes anyway. Don't bother getting the book just go over lecture notes. Really nice and funny guy would take another class with him
Great lecturer, but recitation left much to be desired. The TA's grade much of what you turn in, including term exams. It is possible to get a good grade, but you might not know what you earned on an assignment for several weeks. If you take good notes and do the reading, you should be prepared for tests. Do TopHat and extra credit for grade boost.
I took 116G for my grand challenge and ended up double majoring in poli sci. Interesting class
Show up to class and take notes will basically guarantee an A. Lectures are very important and he makes them extremely interesting, also recitation for this class is awesome you get to have lots of meaningful conversations.
Hutchinson is super nice. I got very lucky with my TA who gave easy A's all the time. There are extra credit opportunities thrown your way almost daily. You won't use the textbook and attendance isn't mandatory if you have the extra credit points under your belt. The exams are all online and very easy.
Professor Hutchinson is amazing. His lectures are super interesting and he knows how to keep the class engaged. I loved this course and would definitely recommend him as a professor. The tests were all open note so they were easy to get an A on.
Took PSC434 with him in the summer. He's an awesome guy, super funny and very knowledgeable about foreign policy. Only complaint is I actually wish the course was longer. It is a lot of info for four weeks.
I loved him!! He's so passionate about what he teaches and is funny! Really good guy class was average workload
I would 100% take any class with him again. This class did not have a lot of work and all the lecture attendance is through tophat but I do recommend going. He is very passionate about what he teaches and he is so funny it makes going to class fun. There is only three exams and if you study for them then they aren't hard.
He is a very personable and approachable professor who you can easily connect with. While he doesn't take attendance, in order to understand anything you need to go to class. There are soooo many ways to get extra credit that it's almost impossible to fail this class.
This class was a 100 level course, but wan't treated as such. Was entertaining to listen to in the beginning of the semester, but as the semester when on it became more and more difficult to listen to him. Exams were painful, luckily recitation and papers helped pull up score. STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE!
Prof. Hutchinson is a great guy, and his class is super lax. You have to get the tophat and answer questions during lectures, which is not hard and I did many classes from home. He gives so many opportunities for extra credit, and you can tell he really wants to make sure everyone does well. If you don't mind busywork this is a good class to ace.
Really engaging lectures and you can tell he really wants everybody to do well in the class. There's lots of opportunities for extra credit. The exams aren't hard if you come to most classes and study for like an hour or two. Definitely worth taking.
Hi I'm actually this guys son so ignore this review I just want to review my dad He's a pretty cool guy and I have attended some lectures because I was sick and had nowhere to go but from what I saw he does care about what he does. Also I saw a comment that said I was his daughter which I thought was really funny because I had long hair back then
Marc Hutchison is extremely friendly and cares about his students. He offers so many extra credit opportunities and his lectures are interesting. I do not regret taking this class.
Hilarious professor and provided great foundations for further political science classes. Very difficult to do poorly in this class...all the study guides lay out everything needed to do well on the exams and if you pay attention in lectures, it's an easy A.
I love professor Hutchison and his class! I'm a ccj major so I have to take some poli sci classes and he made it worth it. He is hysterical in class and gives SO MUCH extra credit. even if its just for a gen ed, take this course.
Professor Hutchison is awesome! His lectures are exciting and entertaining. He cares a lot about his students and is very passionate about the subject. I enjoyed his class so much, I added Political Science as a 2nd major.
This is a class for political science majors; however, it takes up a lot of time outside of class for non-political science majors. The exams are a lot of work: 15 multiple-choice questions, six definition questions, and an essay question. During class, he gives top hat classes that affect your grade. However, he provides a lot of bonus points.
Lectures are fun due to his enthusiasm for the subject. Does TopHat for particiaption and EC. Gives study guides before the exams and clearly tells the layout of it, if you make an effort to study before the exams they are relatviely easy. There is a recitation part with a TA which as long as you participate it is a easy A. Overall 9.5/10
10/10. The best professor I've ever had. It's clear that he wants everyone to pass. His lectures are very engaging, and he does a good job of keeping the lectures interactive. Fun and an easy A
Hutchison is so funny. One of the best professors in poly sci at URI.
