Good teacher, fair and reasonable test. Highly recommand.
He's easy going and brings humour to a very dry course. He knows the materialvery well and he's good in explaining and demonstrates topics with real life examples which is good because the text could cure insomnia.
This teacher is a joke. He is very arrogant and egotistical. I find that he attacks his students in class and is not supportive at all. He himself even admits to being mean to students. This guy talks so much you will fall asleep in his class. For exams, he does not go over what will be on the exam and you have no idea what his expectations are.
Mr. K is hilarious~! He's good times all around. I enjoyed taking his class. He responds to emails quickly if you're having trouble and is always open for extra help. I would recommend him.
He recorded our presentations for us to watch and talked a lot about current events. Tests were a little too open ended and the text can cure for insomnia. Classes tend to be full length or longer but are varied and interesting.
talktive, easy-going but not a helpful teacher. Confusing lectures. Need study by you self a lot.
He is easy going and has great notes. Do have to come to class prepared as he goes pretty fast. Was fun though and that is saying a lot for accounting.
Starting of the class a student is suppose to the material already

Awful professor. Unfair with marking, ridiculous expectations. Many people had to retake the course. Avoid him at all costs!
He is a good instructor. He has high expectations and helps you. I found it helpful that he anonymously shows an answer and how to improve it and also examples of good answers. Like that he treats us as adults and that class not just a long lecture.
Great instructor, knows his stuff very well and is good at creating group assignments and promoting teamwork. We had class presentations and group discussions which makes dreaded subject more fun.
Do not I repeat Do not take a course with this man...He is beyond the worst teaching in the world... I am warning you... you dont know what your getting into... Do Not take his courses
Great teacher, includes the whole class in discussions and is organized and current. Dont know what others are talking about but know he has not the courses shown so somebody is just unhappy and mean. He is fair and approachable, have taken him twice now (3111).
Class was challenging, learned a lot. What we did in class was very close to what I do at work so it worked well for me.
Marc is a very smart man. He has a lot of knowledge about different industries. Just pay attention in class, do you homework and review on a weekly basis and you will easily pass this course. GREAT TEACHER!!!
Good guy, but save your GPA and your money! He does not clarify or cover the material that he expects you know but is a brutal and I mean BRUTAL marker! If you can take this course with another professor. You will have to work very HARD to get a B.
I HATE HIM!!!!!I wish i never took him. He is the worst teacher alive. He expects you to know everything even if it is your first time taking accounting!!!DO NOT TAKE HIM!!This guy should get fired!
If you can understand a Dutch accent I recommend you take this class. But be prepared not to be able to read his so called writing. I can write better than him using my left hand. He uses this homework WIKI thing and he thinks that it is easy to use but it is a night mare. If your stuck in this class sit in the back corner by the window and look ou
Absolute garbage. He may have the credentials, but his lack of interpersonal and teaching skills makes him a reject when compared to other Kwantlen teachers. He has total disrespect and disregard for his students. Unless you have $400.00 to spare, DO NOT TAKE THIS TERRIBLE EXCUSE FOR A TEACHER.
Avoid at all cost. Does not clarify what is expected and marks really harsh, very rude and gives students attitude. Makes this course too much work for what it should be, drops your GPA, take it with Coulson instead.
HIS TEACHING DEGREE SHOULD BE REVOKED, HE DOES NTO KNOW HOW TO TEACH, GOES OFF TOPIC EVERDAY 10MINS, IM IN THE CLASS RITE NOW AND I REGRET IT, IM SO GONNA FAIL DUE TO THIS GUY!!!
I suggest taking this course with someone else. He is a nice guy but a very poor teacher. Even trying to explain simple concepts he makes them seem harder than they are. He continually goes off topic, NEVER gets through his notes, and gives you NO examples from the book. He expects you to know everything already. I feel like I have to teach myself.
Great prof. the course is really applied and really helps us understand why something works a certain way. THe weekly group meetings are helpful as we meet one on one for the group project. The audit file is an insane amount of work though. Would recommend for 3444 and 4445.
I like the class, lot of discussion. Exams are like case studies but he marks fair. Just follow his handouts and know what is on the exam. Helped me sort out a work issue too, nice guy.
Horrible! He never explains anything and prefers to ramble about his daughter then actually spending time teaching. Avoid him!!!
AVOID, good guy but terrible teacher. Doesn't explain things and just rambles on about off topic things. Can't read his writing and if you don't understand something, he makes you feel stupid. Recommend taking someone else for this class
Recommend if interested in accounting, learned how it is actually used, guess this is what some think is off topic causes not in text he talks a bit about business too (complain that off topic 10 min out of 3 hours come on) He could be nicer with people who dont come to class with the work done, not everyones life is accounting. Helped me do well.
Good prof. Does contract work as well so knows his stuff. Good notes but do need to come prepared to follow the class as he things you already know the stuff before he explains it. Exams include material from student presentations which are also posted on line and case studies. Caseware and audit procedures helped me at work.
Terrible.
always off topic, notes were useless, overall not a good teacher.
Not a typcial accounting class, video taped presentations, lot of current events and how accounting and finance fit into the real world. More of a "debate" style than accounting with a lot of articles to comment on.
He may be a good accountant but a horrendous teacher. I'm in the middle of taking his class and have not learnt a thing from him. I've been learning this course on my own, from people who have taken this course and youtube videos that are way more helpful than this guy. Absolute useless teacher. If you take tim, prepare to learn on your own.
not helpful
Better off taking the online course if you plan on taking him. Not very helpful. Asked him a simple yes or no question over email and instead got a mumbo jumbo answer so I couldn't bother asking anymore questions. He goes over his notes too quickly that you don't get to write down key points which would help to understand the formats of his test.
Worst, not understanding. Don't take him.
Do not take this class. He is very unclear. He goes through his notes way too fast. He talks about current events in the stock market a lot.. thats great but this is an accounting class and none of us know anything about the stock market.
I don't know what to say. The first class I ever failed in my entire life. He goes off about his life and current events which is interesting but we always run out of time . His exams are straight-forward if you study the book and his notes. Don't take him, get away!
Nice guy and a easy marker but his lectures and slides aren't very clear cut nor easy to follow. Then again, tax is a complicated course with a very high learning curve.
He is horrible. By far the worst prof I have ever had. He goes through his notes way to fast and treats into classes like they are certified accountants. When I asked him for help, he referred me to the learning centre. Terrible teacher. I would NOT take this class with him unless you are ok with failing.
He went through his notes extremely fast, treated all students like they already knew what he was teaching. Would not help out with any questions or help prepare for the finals. Very difficult prof
My advice to you: keep away from this course and this teacher. The workload is insane, he zooms through the lectures with the speed of the lightning. You end-up doing all the work and learning by yourself. The teacher is talkative but not helpful. Exams are real killers. Get ready for the term project that goes far beyond of what you have covered.
Great teacher, shares many life experiences in class and gets the discussions going. He is a tough grader, sometimes confusing in class, but all in all nothing comes easy. Study his notes and read the chapters from the textbook and you will do fine. I will definitely take Marc again, hes taught me a lot about Law in Canada.
Very mean to students in class
Marc was an excellent teacher, extremely smart, I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, relates to real world situations, his own experiences etc which make it easier to absorb the information. Tax is a hard and confusing subject. It's not an easy course. Do the workplans he assigns, participate in class, print the slides before class.
Experienced instructor who provides clear explanations of the material and how it relates to real life. Going to class definitely will help you pass as he gives you tips on how and what to study.
This man is more interested in his sandwich than teaching. There are no breaks in class. He doesn't go over any questions. He doesn't say what to read in the textbook. He gives no criteria for assignments. "How many pages for the report do you require? Is there a presentation?" Marc: "Um maybe.... Just write whatever..?"
Confusing prof. Students can't ask questions cuz he'll answer around the question. Need to read the entire textbook. Lectures are useless, just learn on your own type of class. Try avoiding this prof!
I highly don't recommend this professor. He's very unclear with his lectures so it makes it confusing to everyone. His lectures are long but the problem is that he spends most of it talking about his life and unrelated things. I understand that tax is a hard subject, but that should be a better reason for Kwantlen to have good teaching professors.
don't take him. No clarity in instruction or what he wants from his students. The lectures are terrible as he just talks about himself(We paid for this??) for 2 plus hours and clicks through ppt's for the remainder of class. The project is vague and he avoids any questions about anything to do with the course. Avoid at all costs.
Marc constantly feels the need to elevate himself above his students by making comments about how this is so easy when asked questions. He seems to understand the material very well, but expects that he should not have to explain any of the material and that it will be picked up quickly and easily just because he understands it.
Do NOT take this class with Marc. Marc does not actually teach anything, he spends the majority of the class talking about himself and then leaves the last 30 mins to scroll through powerpoint slides. Marc expects his students to know information that he has not actually taught or reviewed and he does not provide clear instructions or due dates.
This teacher talks in circles. Even when he's trying to explain something, he leaves you more confused than when you first asked him. He's a nice guy but he just has no talent for teaching. I would avoid this teacher at all costs, myself and everyone I've talked to in my class find getting a decent grade way more difficult than it should be.
If you are interested in finding out how to sell your bike to later buy it back cheaper, he's your guy. Doesn't teach much. Talks about his weekend adventures, and businesses to invest money in, he expects you to know everything without him teaching it. Goes through power points within 10 minutes.
Talks abut everything except the course material. Lectures consist of him going on about his own personal business investments and other non-interesting random stuff he does in his spare time. He really just has absolutely zero talent when it comes to teaching. Do not take a class with him. Terrible at teaching.
I can say that Marc is the worst teacher I have ever had at Kwanten. Our first midterm was on 12 chapters!! We are not allowed to write in our tax act and only allowed to tab the relevant sections (its very difficult to find anything in there). He spends the majority of his class bragging about his wealth and about 10 minutes teaching. AVOID!
Basically, this is a class that is self taught. His lecture notes are vague and unclear at times. He does not go over practice problem in class and he spent most of the class talking about himself. There is two midterm and a final project which is really hard since his expectation are really high. Avoid Him at all Cost!!!
Tax is a complex topic. I definitely had to work for my grade. He doesn't say whats on the exams, so you are forced to study everything. I learned a lot from this class, and from Marc. He is not as bad as everyone says. As long as you work hard and are not lazy, you will be fine.
He is a nice guy but can't teach. Does not focus on the lecture, it's overall very confusing. I had trouble understanding how to do his assignments. Not sure what his grading criteria was either. He seems to focus on all the easy things in the textbook and leaves all the hard stuff for us.
A lot of time spent talking about social issues/injustices of taxation - not on exams! He skimmed through accounting q's VERY QUICKLY (on exams!!), no time to write it down. Moodle notes are incomplete. He makes fun/dis students for not understanding. You must be HIGHLY NUMERATE to do well. He does have office hours and will take the time with you.
Not a great prof. I didn't hear an actual number said until maybe the third week of class and by then I was too lost since his lectures are hard to follow. I got good grades in previous accounting classes but I couldn't even make it through his class. I would avoid taking this class with him if possible, many professors teach it better.
So far so good with Marc. A tough tough topic to grasp and you have to put the hours in yourself. Teachers can't teach you everything. He has an excellent understanding of the the tax system and uses real life examples to explain them. If you actually listened he offers some very sound investment advise also. In the real world you pay for this!
You honestly won't learn anything by going to class; Study from your textbook. His 'homework' is bs and doesn't even grade it. His course presentation is instructor oriented and he teaches everything in his own way. Professional conduct is 20% and when you asked for clarification he doesn't explain anything properly. Not a good prof
After taking Marc's intermediate tax class, I can say that 15-20 hours of course work per week will get you at least a C in the course. Is condescending to students and creates a very stressful and negative classroom atmosphere. You will have to learn 80% of the course material on your own. Is not professional and thus should not be a CPA.
He made the course difficult multiple times. If wanna boost your GPA then DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS !!
Terrible pro ever had... very unclear course materials and he uses iPad to make notes which is totally unreadable. Terrible time management, he usually forgets to give you break time. If he shows on your course list, AVOID HIM!!!!!!
marc is one of the worst profs ever. he assigns work that isn't even related to the course. his midterms/exams r really hard. ur basically doing all the work ur self for his class. if u ask a question he doesn't really answer it u kinda just get more confused after he talks to u. avoid him.
this prof should not be teaching at all, he has knowledge but does not know how to teach, he is lazy and not helpful when you go to his office, he is giving you a lot of non sense joke in class , did not demonstrate any problem and expect you to do well , exam is vey heavy, he tests you on things he did not cover in class, STAY AWAY
He is very tough professor! You can not get his points on the class.
Waste of time while attending his class
Donot take Marc. Prior to taking this class I read rate my prof, however, I was being naïve and thought I would be able to work my way through getting an A regardless of the reviews on this site, however, I was wrong. I have worked in public practice for 2 years and was barely able to pass his class. Do not take him he is horrible.
I'm shocked at all the negative reviews. I find Marc to be an engaging teacher who really knows his stuff. He won't spoon-feed you answers but he encourages you to actually apply the material to assignments and encourages a lot of back and forth. Maybe better for upper-level students who want to apply concepts instead of just learn theory.
Worst professor by far. Not willing to help students even when you go to him during office hours. There were a total of 8 people in my class, I should have taken that as a red flag. Avoid at all costs. No point in attending lectures as he does not teach the material, so disorganized and such inconsistent marking.
weak in class feedback-better for one on one, lectures dry- lots of self teaching, preferred if you refrained from speaking a language other than English in class :*
He is nice but his lectures are long & pointless, rambles on about unrelated things like his kids. It takes 20 minutes just for him to answer your simple question, but he doesn't even explain it in a way that makes you understand. He doesn't give you a midterm outline so you don't even know how to study for the midterms. His feedback is also week.
I read previous ratings before taking his class and I would say partly true, partly not true ratings. If you get to know Marc and show that you care about getting a good grade he is a nice, reasonable guy. The course is basically only graded on 2 midterms and an exam and he doesn't actually "teach." You have to read the textbook and teach yourself.
unclear does not explain anything for work lectures suck no point in attending them goes off topic all class notes he makes don't even make sense don't take,
I do not recommend taking a class with Marc. His lectures are so boring, he never fully explains concepts. On the first day of class he assigned us a project with no instructions on how to do it or where to find resources. He expects a lot out of students but doesnt teach well. If you have any questions he will not stay to answer them after class.
Worst prof I've ever taken at KPU. I'm a third-year and man is he the worst. He expects everyone to come to class knowing the material. He doesn't tell you what will be on the midterm/test so I had to read the entire textbook. Doesn't teach anything during lectures. For the project, he expected everyone to go to court and write upon a case. WORST
Marc does not care about the student's success. He always sidetracks and talks about something non-related. His midterms are on a different level. He tests you on stuff he doesn't teach. Take a different prof. Save your GPA.
Worst accounting prof, dont bother taking him, its wastage of money and time. Brag about his own investments like bruh we dont care about what u do lol. Exams are hardest. Started class with about 20 people and week before there were like 6-8 people left. He is rude.
He is OK. I actually enjoy when he talks about the market because I understand it.
Marc is a good professor, he always helps his students and responds to email very soon.. his classes are so engaging and he very polite make sure to go through his assigned readings before class that will make more easier to understand the stuff
While there are many reviews on here that speak negatively. Marc does make his students work for it and maybe the ones that think the course is too difficult or not doable might just be the ones who didn't put in any of the time themselves.
Nice professor. Youll get good grades if you study well. Obviously if you dont study you are not gonna pass like any other professor. I like the system of formative and summative assessment of mid term and final. If you score better on final exam, thats gonna replace your mid term mark too !! So youve chance to improve until the semester ends.
Not a helpful professor
Was kind of intimidating, which caused a lack of participation. Would belittle and tear apart student's work. One thing wrong = all wrong. Finding course resources was not easy either; it's a scavenger hunt. Unless you like a lot of work with convoluted explanations that are apparently wrong when it comes time to write the exam, I would avoid.
This effectively was one of the hardest classes that I've taken at KPU. Prof. Marc was incredibly knowledgeable and helped students a lot. His guidance on assignments and exam is clearly understandable, and he gives enough feedback. I recommend his class if you are a hard worker.
Horribe prof, all the negative reviews about this guy are right! first time i had to come write a review about a prof due to how bad at teaching this guy is.He just stands in the front of the class and just TALKS We students pay you to teach n not just for us to buy the textbook and then teach ourselves. All he does is talk with no visuals n brags
Super knowledgeable guy, not great at teaching. He is super smart and has tons of experience but his lectures are not very helpful so you will end up needing to learn a lot out of the textbook. He's a tough grader and has a no BS style of classroom control and grading.
By the end of the course I felt like I did not learn a single thing. Smart guy, but awful at explaining. Many times just rambles on about his personal life instead of explaining things. His final exam is crazy hard and tested us on things he never taught in class. Get ready to read the entire textbook on your own. Avoid him if you can.
I don't know why people would choose Marc for any accounting course. The man is unbelievable when it comes to teaching. Spends hours on end rambling about whatever is on his mind, and by then he's already lost half of us. For goodness sake! If I wanted to listen someone ramble about their life, I would have taken a course on that.
I strongly recommend choosing another prof over Marc, he is by far the WORST accounting instructor I have ever met. Spends most of class talking about nonsense and pretty much makes class insufferable. I literally had to rely on self studying to get through his class and the semester itself. A V O I D him at all costs!
Marc is one of the good professors at KPU. He has thorough knowledge of taxation. He is a very lenient marker, and his exams are not hard.
In general he is the type of professor that expect you to have a lot of interaction with him and try to use concepts being taught in textbook to bring out your own opinion about events/articles. Lots of people find it's too challenging and drop out. I had 5 people at beginning of the course, and I was the only one remain before midterm.
Marc is by far the worst prof I have ever had for a university course. He wastes the majority of class time talking about his political beliefs, his mountain bikes, and his cars. Going to his lectures is an absolute waste of time because you'll have to teach yourself everything, if you have a choice of taking another professor please go with them.
Marc wastes 2/3 of class time talking about whatever is on his mind, leaving us students to sit there in absolute boredom. By the time 2 hours or more class time has passed, he would finally get down to business talking about this week's tax chapter and the notes he provided. If you take his class, be prepared to self-study a LOT.
Be aware that Marc tests ELEVEN (11) CHAPTERS for one midterm and FIFTEEN (15) for his final exam. Wastes time in class talking about nonsense and pretty much forces everyone to study on their own time. Unless you want to sit through 2.5 hours listening to him ramble, choose another prof who can ACTUALLY TEACH and not be useless.
He is just the worst tax instructor or even accounting instructor of the entire KPU accounting faculty. Wastes time in class not teaching the stuff he provides on Moodle. We all got the textbook required but he never assigns one question from the text itself. Absolute waste of time and money on Marc.
Marc is clearly incredibly knowledgeable on the subject of taxation, but he has zero ability to pass that knowledge on to students. Comes across as rude and condescending which limits class participation. Attending class is pointless as he doesn't teach any material or provide useful notes. Super difficult and time consuming self-study class.
I didn't understand a single word he taught at the end of semester. He will test you on things he never taught. Will take the entire 3 hours without a break and might take longer. Doesn't care about students and no clear feedback on papers. PLEASE AVOID IF YOU CAN.
Avoid taking Marc's class if possible. He spends most lectures rambling about irrelevant topics, leaving students to self-study the dense course material. However, Unstuck AI proved helpful for review and exam prep.
