He is hard, but you learn a lot,. Assigns projects, fair, nice,
No Comments
really nice. if you really want to learn he does a good job.
He is a nice and patient teacher, but his final exam is difficult. And, it is sometimes difficult to concentrate in his class because his voice is monotonous.
His class is extremely difficult. No one understands what he is saying in the class. If you are excellent in MATH, then I recommend this instructor.
the way he corrects your paper is extremely hard Although he's pretty helpful, it's still hard to get a good grade in his class
he is a good teacher. his test are quite easy if you do all of the homework... he does give a lot of homework, but it is worth it, cause it really helps. and if you have a question dont hesitate to ask, he will help.
he's great.. a lotta work though.. but hes patient and one needs to go beyond the monotonous voice to lissen to wat he says its really simple
This guy is awful. Easily the worst teacher I had while attending Foothill. He is totally bland during his lectures and completely useless during his office hours. Save yourself a headache because this guy has no business teaching.
He is a hard but good teacher. There is A LOT of work in his classes. Exams are very difficult. But after taking his class you know more...
Comes well prepared. Always open to questions. Encourages students to ask questions to develop intuition. Helps students find resources or provides resources himself. Obviously enthusiastic and the guy knows his stuff! Thanks Marc!
I had taken precalculus before I took this course to refresh my memory. He is really demanding and extremely boring. He is not helpful and gives unfair tests because he is lazy. If you are good at math you will survive if not you will struggle to survive.
He is extremely boring!!! If your are looking for a fun class I would not recommend him. For some students are hard to understand him. If you do not care about the lecture then take him. He does not care about attendance, like doesn't care about students.
He's class is hella borin'U gonna easily fall asleep at his class. He's too serious on Math. Never talk something esle besides Math.If u reli like Math go ahead n take it.If not don't take a try.
A lot of people said that this professor is hard, but his great explanation shall help. He's lecture and his notes are organized, he explains clearly but fast. So, those of you who love math defenitely has to take him. Tips: really study his notes and do the homeworks he assigned to you.
A very serious teacher. He rarely goes off on tangents and has a "let's get to business right away" kind of attitude. The class may be hard for some, but he comes very well prepared and his notes are outstanding. If you're looking to actually learn the material (and not just for an easy A), take him
He can come off as a little boring, but he is very through in his teaching. The notes he gives (printed out for you) are extremely helpful, I was able to pass the class just studying form them! He is very patient and alwyas makes sure tha his students understand a topic before moving on.
he's great, very helpful, and explains really well. makes me understand math a lot. it's not hard to score high on the quizzes and midterms as long as you do the homework. i definitely recommend him
he is very cooperative, its very easy to get A in this class, the midterms are based on homeworh problems and the handouts,if u go thru these things thoroughly u ll b able to get A,online quizes r easy and u can get help in solving quizes frm him before submitting it,in one word he si gr8!
Am taking him for the second quarter. his explanation is really clear, and its not hard to score high on the quizzes and midterms. lectures are a lil boring tho. overall hes great as a professor
This class is kind of hard, but Marc is a very fair when it comes to grades. If you put good effort into the online quizes you dont have to do the homework.
hell nah!!!!!!!! I made a mistake by takin his class.....its borin' as hell.....believe dat....i used to love math, after this...i cant even touch math no more....class is wack......dont ever take him,man.....im hella confused in the class.... all he does is play with his calculator in the front...
sit around the center of the class and focus. you'll definitely do well. his exams are similar to that you see in the previous sample exams he gave. in exams, he tests his students more on the big picture than on the details. ask him to slow down and he'll be glad to do so.
my fav!!! his final was so much easier than the sample final he gave.. trust me
Nice!
I really like Mr.Knobel because he is always ready to help us. His teachings is pretty fast but he always make sure that everybody gets everything. He also provides some extra credit oppurtunities. He is really a nice teacher.
Even though he teaches very fast, he is a nice teacher. He is available whenever we want. He is very happy to help the students all the times. He is very nice and his class is kind of funny. He also provides extra credit opportunities.I would recommend you to take his class.
Mr. Knobel is good teacher and really knows his stuff. His teaching style is very fast. He is willing to help you if you need it. Lots of quizzes. Also offers extra credit.
Marc is awesome... If you do your homework, you will be just fine... He cares if you understand and his grading is very fair.
He's very nice and cute. He loves math and knows his stuff. Lots of quiz and exams. Do you HW and you'll do fine. extra credit available. Not easy but fair.
he's really nice and helpful, but he speaks in a mumbling voice.you will need to go to the math center often.his quiz is so easy, exam is a bit rough. If you do HW problems, study for every single quiz or mini quiz, and do extra credit HW you'll be totally fine. his final is always multiple choice.
THANKS FOR PASSONG ME..GREAT TEACHER..LOTS OF QUIZZES...AND FIRST EXAM IS VERY HARD...DO HOMEWORK.........
Great teacher, go to class everyday
really nice, but the final was seriously hard.quiz and mid term were easy.
very smart, but the hardest teacher in the world. his test are about 12 pages each ( no kidding). and u have houre and half. u need to spend at least 5-6 hourse a day, 7 days a week studing and working for his class to get a good grade
Compared to Stanley who many people like, i prefer knobel.. He's pretty fast sometimes but he is willing to help so that wouldn't be a problem. One thing i like about his class is his pace of teaching suits me and doesn't make me fall asleep like stanley's class.. overall, he's good..
Very good instructor (: Super nice and caring. Makes a ton of sense....and is entertaining (considering Math is sometimes "dry," he makes it actually interesting). MIDTERMS AND FINAL ARE HARD....STUDY STUDY STUDY!!! If you study, you get an A or B....but at this level Math, you HAVE to study.
Awesome!!!!!!
He is a great instructor and his teaching style is very understandable. Getting an A in the class is actually possible as long as you do your homework and go to class, otherwise a B is easy. There is about a 30 point extra credit opportunity in his class as well. I highly recommend taking him.
He's nice but he's not the best math teacher. His letures are boring. every class is the same- go over the survival guide page by page. does not give enough practice. Although I get a B+, I needed lots of external help.
he is clearly an asset to foothill college. He has two overhead projectors available, so incase you miss something you can look back. his exams are not too difficult. highly recommend paying attention in class and doing the homework, if you do this you will get an A in the class, no doubt!!! mr knobel rocks!!! o yea, he has extra credit available!
He really likes to teach. He likes to challenge students but he is also willing to help. Make sure you ask questions if you need to or else you won't do well. Make sure you take good notes and get his study guide in print.
Great teacher. He makes the materials really clear to me. He is also very helpful, willing to answer any question you would have about the materials. However, don't expect to get an easy A in this class!=) You will definitely learn a lot if you work hard in his class.
Knobel is a good, fast-paced teacher. There were 5 quizzes and 2 tests. He drops 1 quiz and the final can replace 1 test grade. He has class notes that he goes over everyday and it's like that the whole quarter. There were about 28 students on the first day and 9 students left at the end of the quarter, so the work is difficult. I earned a C and I was happy about it.
I have very mixed feelings about knobel... his classes are incredibly monotonous and he isn't the best at explaining student's questions. He is very helpful, however, if you visit him during his office hours, which sounds a bit annoying, but it helped me a lot. If math isn't your best subject I would recommend another teacher - class is fast paced
Would recommend taking another teacher if possible. Lectures are hard to get through with his droning voice. Doesn't allow much time for tests, usually I didn't finish or finished at the last second. I consider myself good at math but he was a little confusing. Must go to class or you miss a lot.
Very fair teacher. If you take the class seriously you will at least achieve a B. I got a D on the first test and was able to get an A in the class, through EC and the various ways he allows you to improve your grade. Make sure to ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand. If you do hmk and study maybe an hr per test/quiz you WILL get an A. Recommended
He sounds like he has a sick person's voice. Mumbles a lot and some times hard to understand. Attitude could be better. Other than that, he isnt that hard. Just do the HW and study them for the test.
not a good instructor for students who are bad at math. Do not take if you have a learning difference or have trouble in math! Very boring and reluctant to re explain and accomadate students. Hates calculators!
Great professor!!! Lectures are clear and make sense, and it's easy to keep up. His quizzes and tests are fair, and he gives lots of extra credit so you can get the grade you want. He explains everything without oversimplifying. And he's super nice...I would definitely take another class from him.
Absolutely atrocious instructor. He definitely knows his calculus, however, he has difficulty teaching it. He moves super-fast, and assumes you already know everything. Exams are near-impossible. Unless you already know Calc, avoid at all costs
Mr. Knobel is one of the better math teachers at foothill, He is willing to help if you see him during breaks or office hours. The final exam was multiple choice with 40 problems but you could elect not to do five of them. Overall I liked him quite a bit and would not hesitate to take him again
Good teacher. Interesting class. He gives ample opportunities to get an A in his class provided you do practice problems from HW (optional), and a few extra credit labs. It is not a difficult class and the concepts are much more interesting than say precalculus. I managed to get a C just using the survival guide lecture notes (no HW/extracredit).
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH MATH! He goes SO fast and looks at you funny if you raise your hand more than once per class. I have a hard time w math and knew I needed a tutor anyway, but may actually drop the class because even with a tutor, not sure I can keep up.
He's a good enough teacher, just a bit fast for my taste. He's smart, I mean, he CO-WROTE the textbook. The survival guide will help you lots, and he teaches mainly from it. Hes a real nerd, a will make corny jokes and marvel at equations. I guess it comes with the territory. You can opt out of lots of things like hw, quizzes... should be an easy A
Marc's a pretty fair teacher. You can opt out of plenty of assignments/quizzes/+1 midterm, there's extra credit, and webassign is optional (thank god). However, I feel that he makes the material more difficult to digest than need be, and that the MSG doesn't give us any useful examples for hw. Would recommend using youtube videos to supplement.
He does a good job of making sure students understand the concepts. At times he can make things a bit more complicated than they need to be. Overall a great calc teacher. The final is also MUCH easier than the practice final.
Professor Knobel is very knowledgeable, organized, and clear for the most part during his lectures. He is definitely willing to help his students. You can choose to opt out of quizzes. 2 midterms. Final is multiple choice. The only thing is, his tests can be much harder than homework problems and require you to interpret.
he always sounds like he is sick or sleepy. If you do all the homework and study, you will be fine. his final is just so easy, much much easier than the quizzes and the practice final.
take his class
knobel is a very smart guy. opt into the homework and do all the extra credit labs. his final is multiple choice and very hard if you aren't natural at calculus. overall take if you're into powerpoint lectures. i did all my learning from the text and youtube
I don't recommend having him for Math 1B unless if you are really GOOD IN MATH!! His final is multiple choice and I found it to be really hard and ended up failing the class. Not to mention his individual exams were quite hard. I had him for Math 1A and luckily passed with a loowww C. He ONE SUPER HARD MATH PROFESSOR!!!
He's a good teacher, and truth be told, you really need to know the very basics of Calculus for his class. He's also not the type that expects you to remember EVERY single detail, just the fundamental basics. I'd recommend him because he gives tons of extra credit and the quizzes are optional! Good teacher overall!
He is an easy professor compared to the other teachers Ive taken, He is kinda boring but his tests were easy but I didnt do so well because of my laziness. If you do the hw problems well, you should be good for the test, because his tests are pretty much hw problems. other teachers were good but they were hard.
My number one tip for everyone is study ur asses off for the first midterms and quizzes because they are pretty much questions from the book. Cuz if you do well in those you should have some comfy room in the end for the final, cuz its super hard, if u do well in the beginning u should get an A to a B if u do ok on the final.
You will struggle if math is not your strength. His tests are pretty challenging, so be prepared to do some intense studying and practicing. Make sure you study hard for the final as well because it's harder than his midterms and quizzes.
If you are the person who love math and are good at it, I suggest you'd better not take his classes because he do not know how to treat his students properly. If you want to get A for math, also I would suggest you'd better not take his classes since his grading is horrible. In short, he is not a responsible and reliable instructor.
Clear lectures. You can opt out of quizzes but not exams. There was extra credit. Final was HARD. Dropped a letter grade after. Final was multiple choice. His mistake so answer was not there for m.c. part of quiz. Points taken off STUDENTS who did not PROVIDE correct answer on side though HE messed up. Harsh grader too.
Terrible teacher. His style of teaching is boring and "cold", which makes an already boring class a recipe for sleeping. He only does easy problems in the class and then destroys the students on exams. Stay away if you don't your GPA to be raped by this guy's grading. I was forced to take him twice because he was the only one teaching the class.
A nice and helpful professor :) yet, he is not an easy A professor. You have to work hard, esp it is Math 1D, the last sequence of college calculus course!
He doesnt explain well in class he goes way too fast and expects his students to understand what he just said right away. He grades really hard so if youre not good in math i wouldnt recommend him , i dropped his class.
I did extremely well on his online assignments,HOWEVER, his in class quizzes and exams were harder than what was on the online homework, quizzes, and textbook. I'm an above average student, however, after I feel like all of those endless nights studying for math before an in class exam was SUCH A WASTE because I ended up failing. Don't take him.
Professional teaching style. Recommended. Final was pretty hard.
exams are hard, he is very stingy on grades, he is fast paced, his class is not interactive.
Math 1D was certainly a challenging class, but an interesting one. You have to really understand the concepts and visualize to be successful in this class. His exams are hard, but not impossible. I didn't do well on any of his midterms, but I studied VERY hard for the final (tough) and got an A overall. Definitely recommend.
He is not interested in teaching at all. Classes are boring to death. He doesn't explain well. Exams are multiple choice, and often include surprise material that was not covered. If you want to understand how to do math analytically, don't take him. Everything is based on TI-84. So you don't learn how it works. He makes simple math difficult.
Mr. Knobel is a good professor, and he always comes prepared to class.
My least favorite at Foothill so far. Unfriendly toward students, not helpful when approached with questions, and stingy grader. Expects students to go out of their way to buy his "lecture notes" that aren't even sold on campus. Does not engage class. Avoid if possible.
Classes get boring when he starts teaching, but when you do pay attention, the material is easy to understand. Answers all of your questions unless it takes up too much class time. Helpful when you need help on classwork. Mandatory quizzes are based on optional hw (all online) Shows you a lot of way to use your graphing calc very helpful on finals.
Recommended for people who already know the material well maybe have taken the class before. almost everything is optional thats why i recommend this for these ppl. you can opt out of almost everything and make your final worth about 60%. the final REALLY hard. lectures dry and fast and does examples himself and have 2 purchase notes
Not a good instructor at all. Fails to explain concepts clearly. Fails to prepare students for exams. Does not even focus on the correct material (no integral calculus, just approximations!) I took AP Calc with a good instructor, so it's easy for me. Most people who went on from CALC 1A, however, have dropped. Avoid at all costs.
Do not take this instructor even if he is the last one left.
Avoid at all cost! His final exam is unreasonably brutal on which he FOCUSES on material that was not, or only briefly discussed in class.
Easy A
I took Marc in the summer. Summer courses are known to be very rigorous, given you have half the time to complete the same number of credits. Admittedly, Marc is very bland and boring. His voice will put you to sleep, but if you understand the material one way or another (either through his lecture or reading the book), he's honestly an easy prof.
I love his class! He is very willing to answer any question (trust me sometimes my classmates and I ask very stupid questions). Lectures and materials are clear. Tests and exams are easy as long as you have good preparation.
I like him enough to take him again! The class has a very awesome grading criteria where 700 points of material is MANDATORY and 700 points of material is optional, meaning you can "Opt Out" of these assignments- everything from quizzes, homework and midterm. Easy to take advantage of this system, but VERY beneficial if done right.
Unbelievable, he graded so hard on every homework. When you are stuck in one small chapter, then you would lose track of the rest of the class. even you have chance to option out some homework, but the class works are still really hard. I studied 2-5 hrs a day. I only got C- from him. What a waste. You better spend your time on other subject
It's definitely not an easy class but I think he is not a tough grader when it comes to quizzes. Although I wish he gives us more extra credits.
The class is set up where you can opt in or out of everything and just have the final carry 60% of the weight. My advice is to opt in to everything possible and do well because the final is inSANEly hard, so don't expect to opt out of everything and ace the final. Do ALL the homework and PRACTICE TESTS (VERY similar to exams) and you'll do great.
I won't advise anyone to take his class. This guy seems to not like to teach at all. I really didn't understand almost anything that he taught us. He gives you the "opportunity" to opt out for the quizzes. You can skip all of them but the final. Also, he has he "mechanism" of group assignments. I am sure that most of the class failed his class.
Prof Knobel is incredibly organized and his materials are just excellent. The material is not easy but his lectures are clear, and his excellent online resources make it possible for anyone to do well if they are willing to put in the time. I would take again but I would expect to work hard for my grade.
Even mastering the material is not even close to being enough. Expects lengthy labs that take weeks, Homework, and tests that trick you when you think you have the right answer. :/
He is definitely one of the most knowledgeable professor at foothill. He has great teaching experience, which makes his lecture inspirational. For students who are eager to learn, he is the best choice because his mathematica labs give you good exposure to doing math with computer. I really like that he include many proofs in his lecture.
One of the best math professors I have had so far. His grading system is amazing and easy to use to your advantage. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. I also liked that he assigned us mathematica labs since it helped with visualization. If you do all the homework and pay attention in class, you'll do fine!
One os the best professors in Foothill College. It you follow his assgnments you will find that Math 1A is so easy seriously. Do the survial guide and homework, you will be find!
A great professor! Everyday is basically a lecture day, but they are extremely helpful. He is clear and goes thoroughly through the modules. If you go to class you'll pass the exams easily. Homework and collaboration work is optional, but I suggest you do them because you get more practice that way. As long as you do your part you'll do well.
Lectures are clear and concise with well-thought out lesson plans. However, he does speak fast at times and has a monotone pitch, which puts off people. Best way to do well in his class is to do the "optional" problems (tests are very similar to them), attend class, and stay awake. Fair grader. Do the work and its an easy A, otherwise it is tough.
He is one of the worst math teacher. He except you to know everything. TOOOO fast. He doesn't care about his student. He tests you in hard way. No partial credit. He doesn't like you to ask him. His final is Super hard. He well organize. You have to work by your own. Need to go to STEM a lot.I don't recommend for students who are not good in math
Beware, grades consist of 4 tests (low score dropped), 3 labs done in Mathematica program, online hw, and unexpected group work. Online hw cost $100 /quarter. For labs, you will be spending more time figuring out syntax errors than learning actual material. Also, be aware Callelabs are due on the same day as tests. Good luck.
Don't take him. Class has no textbook, so when you're studying for tests you can' t reference any examples. He makes you buy the survival guide which is just a printout of his lectures and no real help. Labs are confusing with so many errors on directions. Unless you're majoring in comp. science, you will be baffled on how much time spent on labs
For a math class, be prepared to write. Hw is assigned everyday, which I had no problem with. But, he makes you group up with other students to do the hw, so if they miss class your grade is on the line. For hw, he makes you write out the question of the problem word for word, otherwise it's a 0. Labs require experience in comp. programming.
Like previous posts, lectures are very dry and robotic. Speaks in a monotonic tone, and if you have a question, his responses are very condescending with no benefit to your learning. Labs will take up all of your time and he spends no more than 5 minutes explaining it. If you want a good grade to transfer, I recommend taking another professor.
Avoid if you can. Lectures cover only the basic examples, you'll be spending more time googling and learning that way. Test questions are open response and more advanced than lectures. You'll quickly realize that his lecutures are inconsistent with his tests. Final is multiple choice and heavily weighted against your overall grade.
If you learn from the bottom-up then DON'T TAKE HIM. Type of Professor that makes you preview the lesson and then gloss through concepts in lecture. Lectures will start becoming useless when you compare them to the exams. Just make sure to intensively study the ANNOTATED Lecture notes. If you hate group work then don't take him.
Lectures are very scripted, covering just main examples. No regard for questions if they take up too much time. Responds to questions with questions. $100 for hw & access to book for the quarter. Start labs early, 20-30 page labs are normal, and conveniently due on exam days. Look for another instructor if you want to transfer to a top UC school.
Has good intentions which is expressed in strict grading. Wants his students to do well in higher up Math classes. However class prep assignments were not helpful and is just busy work. 1-hour Exams but A LOT OF QUESTIONS (I always ran out of time to finish). Multiple choice + Free response on exam. Take if you want a CHALLENGE or else AVOID.
Very fair teacher. Allows you to opt in and out of certain assignments, so opting into everything possible helps your grade tremendously. 4 tests + final, lowest test dropped. Tests are mostly based on notes/homework. Lots of partial credit on tests. Makes you work hard for it, but if you put in the work and show up to class, you'll do fine.
Wants to prepare you for the real world, thus will test you on material at the most DIFFICULT level. Engineering majors may benefit from this grading style, but if your major doesn't require higher math then don't take him. Explanations are lacking at times and expects you to understand the material from watching him do problems. GRADES HW HARSHLY.
He goes by to fast and its hard to keep track with him. He doesn't really interact with students and kind of just gives you the information and expects you know it. He is heavy on tests but doesn't do minterms. But don't let that fool you he gives out 6-8 test that he grades heavly. If you can learn the meatral by yourself then your good. If not well.
Lectures can get quite boring and he teaches quickly. Expect to try and figure out some things by yourself as material can get quite confusing. Opt in/out option for homework, weekly quizzes, chapter tests every other week with a collab activity. Drops lowest exam, replaces one with final exam grade. Do the work on time, and attend/listen in class.
Marc has the knowledge and is passionate but unless you really like math for some reason you will struggle to pay attention. Long droning lectures, and very heavy workload, including labs that take up time and don't really teach you anything. Class requires a large time commitment, does not work well if you have other responsibilities.
I came from a 4 year and this class was extremely unreasonable. HW consists of printing 5+ pages per night & rewriting each word from those pages! You are graded VERY harshly. It only takes one mistake; use graph paper instead of lined or forget a page number and you won't get credit. Too much time writing(2 hrs) & very little math practice(25min)
Knows a lot, can teach you a lot. Homework load was definitely above average. For math and science majors, he's great. If you just need the class for transfer, there are easier graders out there. Some of the homework required learning how to use Mathematica, which is a bonus if you think you might end up using it in your career.
Great professor and gives you all the resources you need to succeed. Math 1C is inherently a hard class but if you finish all the hw and do the practice exams he provides you should be in great shape for his exams.
Uses the "flip classroom" style so don't expect him to teach the raw material. Grades homework more on structure and organization than accuracy. His "lessons" are youtube videos (that aren't even his) to watch at home and the homework is laborious, even if done in groups. Tests are hard but he does give leeway with extra credit and homework.
Professor Knobel's class will work really well for some people, and not well for others, depending on if the "flipped classroom" style works for you. In my opinion, he is a pretty fair grader and makes his expectations for grading clear from the beginning.
Be ready for the final!
Teaches efficiently, stays on topic and consistently shows that he knows the material like the back of his hand. Yet, he's very understanding of people and is easy to get along with as long as you put in a decent amount of effort. Homework is lengthy but COMPLETELY optional. Tons of opportunity to add a buffer to your grade with extra credit.
Great professor! He provides more resource than other professors. I really like how he structures every lecture. The exams are based on the online homework. The labs and the take-home exam are really interesting. Will take his course again!
My 2004 Lexus GPS voice navigation has more emotional depth than Marc Knobel. The required textbook that contained all of the homework was opaque and extremely difficult for me to learn from. Unbelievable amount of busywork. I studied harder than I ever have before for this class and the final was still riddled with unwelcome surprises.
All direct lecture. This teacher does not seem invested in actually teaching. If you asks questions he barely answers and does not care if it helped you. Be prepared to teach yourself all the concepts by watching videos on youtube and reading the textbook. The grading is fair.
I liked this class because of the non mandatory attendance (I'm better at learning on my own). However, the one time I did show up to class and ask a question, he wasn't the best at explaining. Still, the textbook is a very good resource... if you want to learn it, you will. I got an A. VERY generous drop policy in the case of bad exam/hw grades.
DO NOT TAKE. I DIED IN HIS CLASS. COMPLETELY TURNED ME OFF FROM MATH. STAY AWAY. I DO NOT NORMALLY SAY THIS BUT THIS PROFESSOR IS DEFINITELY SOMEONE TO STAY AWAY FROM.
I would never recommend for anyone to take any kind of Calculus online. The lectures were not helpful at all. On discussion boards students would as for help and he would answer, "lets see if your classmates can help you solve it". NO! Would give easy examples and then hit you with hard quiz questions with math you haven't been taught.
Class is boring as boring gets but the way he lays out the grading rubric you can just fail any 2 exams and still get a good grade. Best way to learn is to teach yourself the lectures in class help to get notes but from then on teach yourself. Gives a bunch of groupworks so find other people in the class who are motivated to do them.
If you have other choices can choose then pls choose others. His lecture is super boring and homework is tedious. It is hard not to fall in sleep during his class. Even you pay attention to the lecture, I feel like studying on your own is much more helpful. The tests are not that hard but he is picky so you may lose some credits unexpectedly.
There is a lot of work if you opt in all assignments, but you better opt in since the tests are similar to the homework. You should skip all classes and finish all his assignment at home, and I believe you are able to get at least B+ if you do so. It's true that he is picky and you'll lose some points unexpectedly.
Worst class i've ever taken. You get easy questions on lecture but on the test, he asks you questions you've never seen before. Don't even wanna talk about his voice. tries to teach mathematics as if he is teaching an English class. Just talking. Even if you listen carefully, you still gotta do more on your own. I dont know why his class exists.
Online class. A true hellish experience. YOU PAY TO SELF TEACH. Honestly this class wouldn't be hard if the teacher engaged more with his students but his method of teaching is GIVING YOU ENDLESS AMOUNT OF WORK. The workload at SJSU isn't as crazy as this. If you work & take 15+ units, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! RUN! DON'T! DO! IT!
A decent teacher overall, but can sometimes be boring. Lots of extra credits,4 1-h exams, and 2 mandatory Mathematica labs. Just try not to skip classes, do all the labs on time, and review his notes before the exams and you will be fine.
I worked harder than I ever have in school and made real strides personally with math. The class took a kind of relentless dedication I had no idea I was capable of. Professor Knobel was extremely knowledgeable, wise and inspiring. He doesn't lower the bar for students, but instead, he pushes them to rise up to the rigor required for calculus!

Its easy to lose some points due to some little mistakes. He makes the exams easy tho. A for sure if u do all assignments.
Do NOT take this class online. Though grading/assignments were very clear, this is not a class to take online. There is little to no material that actually helps you with HW, Tests, etc. Khan Academy, Chegg, and Google barely got me through this class. It's hard to tell if it was the teacher's fault or just the fact that I took this class online.
Runs a classroom where you practically teach yourself outside of class with 'class preparatory' work where new material is introduced. If you don't know what or how to do it, it is up to you to figure it out before class. You then turn that in for homework at the beginning of class and he spends all lecture going over it. Lazy teaching effort...
The most fair grading system I've ever seen. Lowest test score is replaced, extra credit opportunities available, okay lectures and decent amount of homework, but homework is pretty much optional. Final is tough. Really nice, if you put in effort than an A is very attainable.
DONT OPT IN FOR HOMEWORK, the first week set is 30 problems so that you buy the textbook and the third week set is 110+ problems which is completely un-manageable because the website is really buggy (making the hw longer than expected. Even though he replaces low scores he is a really HARD grader. Lectures are really boring. He is very nice tho
If you can learn with a textbook, this class will be fine. Optional lectures are kinda boring. Optional HW supplement is a pain (don't do). Weekly quizzes (no time limit) and a few tests, final is 15% of grade. Grading is fine, no surprises here.
Assigned work/lectures don't prepare you for the timed exams. Optional hw is unmanageable. It's only worth about a 1% increase IF you get 100%. He doesn't do extra credit - if you attempt something optional, you better do it 100% right or you'll lower your grade. Material seems mismatched and outdated to exams. I would rate higher if this changed.
For an online class they're not very helpful with feedback/explanations. They have a lot of office hours, which is nice if you're able to make it, but essentially they are very hands-off with this class. Avoid this professor if you need a lot of help because you're going to be teaching yourself. Only got an A because of my group.
Higher level of workload for most online classes. Requires printing out one weekly assignment. Weekly quizzes. Optional online homework. One major project involves good amount of writing. Passing grade should be easy.
Marc Knobel is caring and very accessible; he had office hours thrice a week and replies quickly to messages. He records all his lectures. His grading policy is quite forgiving, dropping 3 of the 11 weekly quizzes, 5 of the ~20 homework assignments and the worst midterm. The homework is also optional. This was a fantastic class, highly recommended!
Marc Knobel is a very caring and conscientious professor. He explains every question on the assignments and tests in detail and has a very lenient grading policy. He has a lot of HWs and quizzes but all the HWs are optional and the quizzes are graded fairly. If you do study hard, it is not hard to get an A and you can definitely learn something.
Professor Marc Knobel is caring and understanding toward his students. Although the quizzes and tests were difficult but if you study and prepare yourself for it, you would get an A.
worst professor I've ever had. Extremely confusing syllabus. needs too much printing and reprinting and scanning and downloading, even in the middle of an exam where you are most stressed. All of that took away my focus from the study material. the lectures were fine but he had close to zero participation in your learning process. NEVER AGAIN.
Ridiculously hard grader, his lectures are boring and unclear. He seems to think that he's really fair but in all honesty his weekly quizzes (really just homework) are graded so harshly. His exams are very hard, and his lectures don't actually give many examples of what's on the exams. He has an opt in for optional homework, don't bother with it.
Knobel is a solid professor but you definitely need to approach his class differently. He focuses on the concept of visualization of problems more than anything -- you need to solidify your knowledge in visualizing objects in the 3rd dimension. Make sure you have someone to review the quizzes with and I recommend opting out of hw. Goodluck!
