Marc is a great guy. He really wants you to understand the material and gives out extra credit as well. He really wants people to understand math, he doesn't just read the book out loud and go home. Go Marc!
Very good, he has prepared lessons for each class, which makes the tests easier. Always asks if we would like to review a problem before going on. BEST math teacher I have had at Folsom Lake/EDC. I look fwd to math class (wow-miracle)! I would like to take another class taught by him. NOTE: Students ARE expected to turn in all homework on time. : )
Professor Olsen is a great teacher. He emphasizes homework which really does help in the long run. Also, he grades almost all the homework for completion and not accuracy. If you take notes, do the homework, and then study just a little, you can easily get an A or B.
Mr. Olsen is a great teacher. He explains things clearly and has a good sense of humor. He really likes his definitions, so make sure to study those for tests!
He is a good professor for those that actually come to class/do homework/pay attention to lectures. But be warned for students like me who wish to learn on their own from the book, HW is worth a lot in his class, he gives a lot of attendance quizzes, and often times puts theory/example questions on exams that he explains in lectures(lecture freebi
Mr. Olsen is a great teacher. He is always willing to take time to further explain material. The humor he displays in class offsets my hate for mathematics, which makes it easier for me to learn. I'd take another one of his classes.
Wonderful professor, he will always ask after teaching something new if we don't understand something and makes random jokes during class (sometimes only to entertain himself, but it makes the students laugh too) to lighten the mood when things get boring. Take Prof. Olsen!!
lots of definitions which are so dumb for a math class. we have online math homework which sucks, but hes a nice professor and grades fairly
Very good teacher. He gives a good lecture and allows time for students to do homework in class. He's laid back and easygoing. He'll listen to student's feedback as to how he should teach the class. He's big into definitions for some reason but that's okay. He's very nice and I find myself improving on every test grade. A rarity for me in math.
hate him.
Trust me, the average student has no reason to "hate" this professor or the class itself. Marc has a great sense of humor and incorporates it into his teaching. I and everyone I've observed in the class around me love him and benefit from his teaching style. Going on to Math 120, I'm arranging my schedule just to take him again!
Ask anyone, his lectures are there to confuse you. Wish I hadn't taken him
He's a good teacher, just show up and pay attention. He is good about coming up with examples and metaphores to help explain concepts in class. and if you don't get something just stop by during his office hours and he'll help you out. Take this class if you can. I won't lie, its math, but it certainly doesn't have to be hell.
Great professor! Uses funny stories 2 help remember tricks nd keeps class awake. Those who hate him nd don't like his class are d ones usually lazy enough 2 show the willingness to learn. This prof. will accomodate and help in any way he can 2 help you succeed. Success comes with the students willingness 2 learn nd d prof. skill 2 teach!
I love him, Helped me more than any other teacher ever has.
according to other students- math 100 and below were much easier to pass with this professor. math 120 is not THAT hard to pass if u study everything that will be on the test!! plus definitions. very boring class though, and professor doesnt keep his word of what will be on the exam.We had online hw which was a real pain but he gives extra credit
Good teacher - but frustrating when trying to get ahold of him. I've spoken with other students, and we all seem to agree that he NEVER replies to email questions. Don't even bother trying. He ignored all important exam/homework questions I sent him, along with other students', constantly. Disappointing.
Teacher would randomly starts talking about grossss topics during class...if he had nothing to teach us he'd hold us in to tell "jokes". He quizzes a lot on definitions...and doesn't tell you what to study for the exams. Horrible!
I have taken calculas class in HS and passed. I took this as a refresher course, but ended up failing epically. He doesnt allow any notes or calculators on tests and is very heavy on concepts. He is a nice guy and all but he tells some very gross stories and makes the class alot more difficult than it could be
Wow. definitely makes the class harder than it has to be. Takes a while to grade things and makes mistakes on grades. ALWAYS check your grade and ALWAYS REVIEW DEFINITIONS word for word. the dude is crazy when it comes to definitions, but he does give a lot of extra cred. I do not recommend if you are not good at math. Good Luck
Regular people who usually struggle w/ math should beware. This class was hell. He also didnt put in the schedual that we had so much online hw to do. I spent all day long sitting at home doing online hw, in addition to the paper hw. & a lot of the times i would get a grade lower on tests b/c of definitions. he is just all bad ..beward
really cool guy. not so good of a teacher. seriously. what math teacher puts definitions on a "math" test? i mean, we already have to remember equations... why defintions that are pointless? if you struggle with math DONT TAKE HIM!
very clear in his lectures, tries to keep things interesting with anecdotes and jokes. Very nice teacher
If your major utilizes mathematics take Olsen. He will make you the one who people ask math questions, not the one asking people questions. An A in his class is a sign that you are a mathematics aficionado. Helpful, yet he will hang you if you don't participate. He requires you to ask questions during his lectures for a good grade! Math Majors only!
Prof Olsen is funny and tells the best stories! He also is extremely helpful. The class is pretty easy. Make sure you do your online homework because it counts a lot for your grade. All book work is turned in before each exam. Sometimes the class can get a little boring. Participation is part of the grade as well.I definitely reccomend Prof. Olsen!
Olsen knows the material but can't teach it well. The homework does not really reflect his lectures accurately. He is available for help if you need it. The class is ideal for those who will breeze through it. If you have to work at it then you won't want to take him.
crappy teacher. pretty much has the students teach the class. that's how he gets students to participate. he's just not a solid professor he's more like one of your buddies you'd go watch football with and drink beer. if you have truoble learning math, i would not recommend taking his class. you'll be in getting tutored without a doubt.
Come to class, don't leave early, and pay attention. You will do well. He is a bit unorthidoxed but he's funny and helps you IF you ask for it. Overall he is helpful and a great teacher
pretty simple teacher. ive had better calculus teachers. he doesnt explain material very well, just takes notes from books. need to know your concepts. poor test grader. does not give you the benefit of the doubt. must show all your work, even if the directions have "givens" in them, still need to show how you got there.
he is just a terrible teacher, he does not explain things very well, and seems to stretch out his lectures when he has nothing more to teach. He teaches one formula then shows 3 or 4 other ways to do that same formula which gets confusing. Online homework and offline. His test do not really go off of the homework.
Olsen has high standards. He expects his students to understand what they are doing, not just how to do it. Conceptual understanding is important to do well on the quizzes. Homework is reasonable. Great teacher to have if you are going further in math. Super helpful during office hours. Do the work and you can easily get an A.
Very helpful when you have a question or do not understand something. Tells corny jokes to keep the class interesting and to keep students awake.
I read these ratings before the class and was scared. But I rejoiced in the fact that his class was pretty good. He does have really high standards for you during the exams but he teaches extremely well, is ALWAYS there to help you and offers a bunch of extra credit. He can be easily talked into things also. I got an A and I loved it.
A one of a kind teacher! He teaches you things in such a way that it makes you want to learn and come to class. He is able to teach you somthing in several different ways because he knows not everyone learns the same. he is extremely helpful and informative and wants you to learn and understand things, and does a great job making that happen!
Let me tell you guys .. Having taken Olsen and gone on to higher math myself, I was FAR more prepared for what was down the road than students around me who had taken 100 with different professors. I'm VERY thankful I took Olsen. What awful whiners on here, rating him poorly! It's MATH. Do the work! He's a GREAT teacher - no doubt about it.
Terrible teacher. His lectures are long and boring. He doenst explain very well. Has terrible jokes.
Decent teacher. Holds you accountable for somewhat pedantic details which resulted in a lot of good students underachieving on tests. Also, he's quite corny, but that comes off as endearing. His jokes usually hit... sort of.
Hes cute...which helped keep me interested. But seriously. He's a cool guy and explains well enough. Offers a good amount of extra credit and can be reached easily. Spends a little too much time on def. and sometimes gives hw on material not covered. test are almost always easy if u did the hw and listened in class
One of the most helpful math teachers I've had. If you don't get a concept, ask him. Because he does a really good job of re-explaining it until you understand it. He's always willing to meet during office hours to help anyone. Pretty reasonable amount of hw. It's helpful to attend class because the examples he does in class end up being on tests.
Can you tell me how someone can go all semester with an 86% until the last four weeks of class and not be passed???? Good luck ladies, he might play the sympathetic role to an innocent school girl but it is misleading.
I thought I understood him perfectly until the first test. He's a really nice guy, but I've never had issues with geometry before this class, and I barely passed. He talks a lot without letting you really do any work in class where you might actually be able to get help from him. A busy student is sunk in his class unless you already understand.
I had Olsen for Geometry & thought he was a great teacher. He made lectures fun & had a good sense of humor. He is approachable for questions & as long as you're prepared & reviewed the material prior to class, you will do fine. I didn't ace the class but it wasn't Olsen's responsibility; it was mine. Good teacher!
great teacher, explains well and is willing to explain the problem from different angles if asked, usually covers the entire chapter going over a lot of examples, but assigns a lot of homework, it is a very hard class
I am quite surprised how many people on here did not like him. He's was the best math teacher I have ever had!!! Great with explaining, and will keep explaining until you understand the problem. I wish I could have had him for Math 100 and 120 but that is not possible. AWESOME TEACHER, and he is pretty funny! But you must be willing to work!
He was very scattered and unhelpful. Graded tests without any partial credit, and made me hate math even more. I would not reccomend him for anybody who wants to have a half way enjoyable 2 hour class twice or 3 times a week.
Professor Olsen is an Awesome teacher. the class was very tough, and you need to be ready to spend the majority of your life studying. the homework doesn't represent the exams, but his lectures do. Take advantage of office hours! He is great at re-explaining concepts until you understand and wont give up on you, but you have to be willing to ask
Great Teacher! He uses a lot of technical vocabulary to help everyone grasp the concepts in the book and cement the fundamentals behind them. He's always available for extra help and starts tests early to give more time on them. He's knownledgable about the practical applications of Math, too! Funny, Smart, and Smoking Hot!
Amazing teacher! He explains the concepts in a way thats easy to understand plus he's a fair grader, and he's pretty funny too. If you struggle with learning from lectures take advantage of the office hours, he's really chill and willing to help. Glad I took this class, definitely would recommend it. :)
Best math professor i've had! He makes math so easy to understand and he's so willing to do whatever it takes to help each student succeed (even the stupid ones). Gives a lot of hmwrk but get real, if you're taking calc you better expect hmwrk. And he's super flexible to help students outside of class. Basically just a great teacher! rate 10/10!
This class is pretty easy as long as you take 2-3 days to study prior to a test. I survived off of YouTube instructional videos. 3 Exams 2 projects and 1 Final. Notes are on a power point which you can easily obtain from him and have ready before class. HW due on exams, but there are HW quizzes so don't procrastinate. Gives partial/extra credit.
Honestly one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He thoroughly cares about his students and actually makes time for them. On top of that, he listens to their concerns and is willing to adjust to satisfy us. I highly recommend him to anyone of any learning style. He's very funny and also good looking!
I absolutely loved Olsen! He is such a nice guy and truly cares about his students and their success in his class. Though it was a Calculus class, I found it straight forward and easy. He will go above and beyond to make sure his students are understanding the material and doing their best. Tests and quizzes are somewhat hard so you have to study!
Olsen is my favorite math teacher! He is very helpful and welcomes all students to office hours and will stay and help even after hours are over. He doesn't throw any curve balls on tests, he clearly tells you what to expect. Very nice guy!
Very clear and fair. I appreciate that he teaches his students to understand concepts, rather than just memorize equations.
Great teacher and easy to talk to when you need help. Wants you to succeed and doesn't try to trick you on exams/quizzes. Prints out notes for you to follow along with in the class so you don't spend the whole time writing. This allows you to focus on his lectures and understand the concepts. Would take with him again but doesn't teach 401/402
Second worst math teacher I have ever had. Very unclear, only teaches to the top 4-5 students who already understand the subject. Half the class was failing by the middle of the semester. If you do the homework (online and book) and all your take home quiz's you can pass. I used the tutoring center which was very helpful
His class is not easy. There is a lot of homework. But he teaches everything clearly and thoughtfully and is available in his office where he will teach you until you understand. Your math skills will improve as long as you do ALL of the homework and study for the tests.
Have you ever had a teacher who talked a lot but didn't seem to actually teach you anything? This is professor Olsen. He teaches to the top 5 students in the class and just sort of skims through his notes. He is very nice and approachable but very unclear so I ended up using the tutoring center a lot!
Mr. Olsen is an outstanding instructor! He cares about his students and how they're doing in class. In Geometry, he gave us meaningful projects and never surprised us with anything. Lots of homework, but it was a 5 unit course, so that was expected. I felt extremely prepared for ever quiz and test. He is super funny and makes everything clear.
It was my good luck to have a class of awesome teacher Mr. Olsen. His recommendation and guidance proved best for me. He does his duty very well by showing the right path to success, after that it is your responsibility to follow it.
Olsen got me over my fear of math! He's organized and clear about expectations, gives extra credit in class and for going to the tutoring center. Unit exams along with attendance, homework, and quizzes make up the grade. I was getting Bs or Cs on exams but with the EC and other work got an A!
Super awesome teacher, does fun activities to make math interesting.Always going into detail, only teaches the important things. Has a workbook lecture so its easy to follow along and take only as neeeded notes
Professor Olsen wants to see his students succeed. He will go to great lengths to assist you if you are willing to put in 100% effort. He will give you as much encouragement and help as you need.
I was hoping to get a teacher that can explain Calculus very well considering it's a very hard topic but not much clarity was given during class. He gives a lot of tough proofs on quizzes and tests, and never gives partial credit on slightly wrong answers. I would not recommend him if you're actually trying to learn a subject for a future career.
Olsen is a cool guy in my opinion. Calc 1 was pretty tuff, but you will learn calc if you take him, he will prepare you for calc 2. Test are tuff, but everything is from the notes and HW. HW is a must if you want pass his class. Always willing to help his students, lets you come in early for test and stay late. 1st test is hardest study hard!!!!!
Expect a lot of hw for the first quarter of class. It's his way of kicking out people. He tends to lecture to the group sitting in the front of him, and tends to cover what he writes on the board. Very helpful when it comes to one-on-one teaching. Unless you understand it quickly in class, more likely to teach yourself lectures. Lots of xtra cred!
He is an awesome professor. He really believes in his students and wants them to succeed. Homework is easy, as well as easy to ge credit for so def do not miss out on that. Test are somewhat easy however if you don't understand basic you will not pass. Over all he is awesome and make funny remarks that make class fun and make him a fun professor.
a teacher worth taking if you want to learn and remember what your learning. shows many ways to do math problems which can be beneficial if your trying to get an A. if you dont study you will fail test. alot of online hw. take notes, you should pass.
Professor Olsen is the Best Calculus 1 professor. His class is not easy but if you really want to learn, then take his Calculus class. He is a super awesome guy and very helpful. He will enroll all the wait list students. His first exam is really hard so be ready for it!! I recommend you to take his Cal 1 class and have real fun in life with Cal.
Professor Olsen is probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had! He's funny and very helpful. He really takes the time to review tests or quizzes with the class. If you're having a difficult time with math homework problem, don't hesitate to ask him in office hours. If you take thorough notes in class, you will succeed. :)
Professor Olsen is an awesome teacher! He's hecka funny and he encourages class participation and he is very good at explaining concepts and if you are confused, he's happy to answer questions!
Great professor. Very friendly and profession. Easy to come to with questions. Doesn't look down on your abilities. Believes in his students and their success. Do the work and put in the fort and he will show you the same respect. Great teacher. I would definitely take a class of his again.
Great teacher! One of my favorites! Is there for you. You will learn a lot as long as you show up and put in the effort.
He was a nice guy who is there for you if you need it, but I found myself confused throughout most of the course. He likes to talk about his life outside of the classroom and is an overall funny person, but might not be the best teacher for all students. If you take this class, do not procrastinate on the homework!
Very funny and analogy inspired learning
I took him my very first year of college in Fall of 2014. He is amazing! His teaching skills are great. I like how he cares and how he expects students to have their own math binder. I highly recommend! He kind of reminds me of Tony Hawk. lol He has a laid back/skater/surf style
He is a fantastic teacher and all around nice person. The class can be extremely hard and a lot of work though, so expect to put in a lot of time and effort. With the sheer workload it might be too much to also pair it with big science courses as well. Putting the home working to last minute is pure suicide, so refrain from doing so if you can!
He's really helpful on your exam review, I like the way he teach all of his classes, the workbook he wrote and a exactly the same programs of a actual textbook; makes you easy to study and review, preview. He never teach summer school, I wish he could teach more classes such Trig or Stat... Ect. Well, love this guy !
great professor! very caring and wants everyone to pass! very understandable and all around a great teacher. I wish he taught all the classes I need
Participation is part of our grade. If we don't participate in class there are other ways to get credit for it. He cares. He takes his time to help you to succeed in the class goes over questions and things you don't understand with detail. He will stay as late as possible to go over things with you if you need help. If I could have him for all my.
Prof Olsen is a very nice, respectable guy who wants his students to succeed. He is very willing to work with you outside of class. There are 4 exams & the final. Homework is what you'd expect for a math class & a few take home quizzes. His teaching style didn't work for me bc he'd try to have you figure out theorems & stuff instead of just being direct about what we're learning & how to apply it. tests are difficult & there are no practice tests.
Better study your BUT off for this class. He doesn't allow notes or even calculators on tests. Beware of his first test, most people do really bad. He replaces your lowest test score with your final. Also he gives out extra credit, do ALL OF IT! This will help. The quizzes r TAKE HOME, but can be difficult. Use google! Overall his class was tough.
I absolutely adored Professor Olsen and his class. I went to his office hours twice a week (as they were scheduled right before our class time) and he was always extremely helpful and was able to explain things in a way so that it was easy to understand. He was very caring and funny. I wish he taught Calc 2 and 3 as well. Definitely my fav prof...
He went above and beyond as a teacher to help me in getting through this class. He generally cares about the success of his students.
Professor Olsen is an amazing professor. I absolutely HATE math. I am awful at it, but he made it bearable and that is saying a lot. You are in good hands!
If you have taken math before, be prepared to throw all of your traditional learning out of the window because he will not accept answers if it does not show his way, even if the answer is correct. The book teaches differently than he does. His teachings in class does not match the teachings that is given in your assigned online homework.
Professor Olsen does try to be a good teacher, but his teaching methods could use some polishing. He will lecture and lecture, but only run through minimal problems on the board. It is difficult to follow his lectures and learn without more examples. Tons of homework, tests difficulty was harder than H.W. difficulty. Does not adequately prepare you
He is an amazing professor. His tests were hard, but welcome to college. He unequivocally prepares students. You are in college so don't miss class, and study!
he is awesome teacher and helps a lot.
Being a person who never liked math, I did struggle in understanding some of the concepts. However, Professor Olsen was so helpful, he went above and beyond in helping me. Did he make me work my ass off? Yes! But I'm glad he did because I don't hate math now, I'm slowly starting to enjoy it. Professor is also super funny.
Good teacher. Allows you to correct errors in the test and get more points.
I felt as if I understood the concepts pretty well but then he gives us the test and its completely different types of problems than what we learned. No matter what i studied there was always something to throw me off on every test. i feel like he enjoys watching us struggle when he gives us tests with different problems than what we did in class
Professor Olsen is a great teacher. He goes over everything thoroughly and will help you when you do homework in class. Lectures can take up the whole class period. I would defiantly want this Professor again if he's available in higher math courses.
You will absolutely learn a lot in his class if you put forth the effort. That being said, his tests are extremely hard and you won't be able to use notes or a calculator. As someone else also said, I think he enjoyed watching people struggle. I put in 20 hours a week studying for this class and felt like it didn't matter on the exams.
Marc's CALC 1 is great preparation for CALC 2. He really enjoys what he does, but as someone else said, he does seem to enjoy exam days a bit too much. I enjoyed the class and I would enroll in another of his classes again if our paths crossed.
Lectures often devolve into lengthy metaphors and stories, leaving little time for problems to be worked. There was a disconnect between the lessons taught and the problems seen on the homework. On one occasion we received an initial lecture after already being quizzed on that material. Supplement this class with lessons from anywhere else to pass.
Hilarious teacher and he teaches well. I have nothing to complain about this professor other than his exams and pop quizzes. Its almost like he waits till the exam to give you the hardest problems. Pop quizzes first 5 minutes of a 7am class so you cannot be late. Cant make these up either. Great teacher if you want to learn, bad if you want to pass
did not give enough time on homework and did not explain the material well enough.
He is a good professor but if you missed a few classes, you are going to have a ROUGH TIME. It does not help that the class I took was early in the morning, considering that I am a night owl.
Tends to get distracted by a thought and go on a 30 minute tangent on one section and when he realizes time is almost out he will give you one or two examples for the next section and expects you to understand the material. If math doesnt come naturally for you DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Absolutely the worst experience I have had in a college class.
Inspirational teacher - he seems to really enjoy math which lights up the classroom. He has helpful notes for students to fill out during class for his lectures (not mandatory), uses the textbook for homework in addition to online homework. The workload is heavy, about 2hrs per day. He likes questions, is a kind teacher, always willing to help.
The early morning time makes this class way harder than it really is
I got an 87% but he gave me an A! Likely bc I showed up to *every* class on time/early and participated often. Math can be hard; he makes it fun. There's book AND online homework, so if you take his class, be sure not to take other homework heavy classes bc it can be a lot especially if you're working. Regardless, I suggest this professor.
The reason I marked attendance as non mandatory is because you could learn the same amount of information if you didn't go to class vs. if you did. He does not teach and when you ask him questions he often turns it into a joke and never ends up answering your question. Worst math teacher I've ever had.
He is really bad at teaching the material. He makes you print out notes before you come to the lectures but he doesn't use them, so they almost always stay blank. He refuses to tell the students what will be on the test and instead tells them to "guess". He makes us make our own study guides. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
Every week there is a warmup. Some are to make notes for yourself, or make a practice test, or extra homework, but I felt like the practice test and notes assignments were very unnecessary and actually very annoying. Every class session there is homework, and you turn in all your chapter hw at every chapter exam. Teacher explains well on lectures.
Honestly doesn't know how to explain math concepts at all. No study guides, doesn't even tell you what will be on the test. He wants you to "Guess" like its some sick game to him. How am I supposed to study when I have no idea what the test will ask me about?
Professor Olsen give great feedback. However, in my opinion he was not put together at all. He constantly gave me very negative comments on homework assignments/projects I put A LOT of effort on even when he says effort is worth more points than the correct answers. He also did not say anything positive once.
Math310 was a very interesting class. Homework was busywork, but there are STRICT format guidelines. The only items that make or break your grade are the massive projects, which are fairly poorly explained. Professor Olson is a very kind person and was available to answer questions, but I was still often left in the dark.
He is a very good teacher, but very hard at the same time. I would say if you could bare the storm, you will come out in better shape than the majority. He will give you very little homework but you should do the entire chapter since the amount he gives you does not cover much of what will be on the exam.
brilliant man! He was so kind and always ready to help. I took his support class for calc 400
I took him for a calc 400 tutoring class and he cares about his students. He will help you in any way he can.
I attended Professor Olsen's Math 80 class this semester as a supplement to Math 400, Calculus 1. This class was extremely helpful during this time of online only attendance. I would not have passed Math 400 if it was not for the online meetings held by Professor Olsen and his assistant. Many students who attended were in the mid B range finals.
This was the worst class I have taken so far. Do not recommend this professor to anyone. If youre seeing this comment, just go ahead and find a new professor, because this professor does not care for his students. He does not curve grades and a lot of people were failing his exams and he didnt do anything about it. All in all, HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!
VERY tough class. No zoom meeting or posted lectures so youre left to learn the material and figure out the rest from there. 60% of your grade comes from the 4 exams and the final. 100 pts possible for participation and somehow completing every assignment and doing all the work and going to office hours was only worth 70/100. Nice guy, meh teacher
Horrible class. I'm a full-time worker, as well as taking 16 other units. All teach yourself, half the video assigned to watch have been taken down, he takes his time to respond, class is not meant for full-time workers. The test takes 7 hours to complete, homework load is ridiculous, oh and it's the day before a holiday and we have a huge exam.
He's created these personal study guides called HIPSTIRs that coincide with the homework which will be completed on ALEKS. Assignments are due every Wednsday/Friday . He communicates but every email feels like a lecture. Test are 2 parts (7 HRs) and 100 points. Quiz are every week (10-20 points). HW & HIP are (5-10 point). No calculators! No prep!
This class was draining & discouraging. Professor assigns "HIPSTRs" which take up most of your time! Not very organized or efficient either. Tests are done in HIS timeframe, they take about 5 hours. A lot of content to learn, in a small time frame before a test. There is a HEAVY load of homework. If you have a tight schedule, look elsewhere!
Way too much homework. The amount of stress this class caused me is incredible. Doesn't care about students, wont curve grades, endless homework, tests take 6 hours, avoid like the plague.
Not sure why there are so many bad testimonials on his MATH 335 Class but, he is a brilliant professor; you have to work to learn the material so you have to put some hours in each week. Overall, he is very motivational and doesn't proctor any tests or quizzes, which is a nice non-invasion of privacy. I loved this class and learned a lot!
I can not speak highly enough about Mr.Olsen. I have no idea why there are bad reviews as he goes over and above for his students. If you need a good teacher look no farther. He will help you anyway he can.
If you want to spend all of your energy and effort in one class, go for this class. If you even have a part time job then this class is not for you.
Professor Olsen is by far one of the best math professors I've ever had. Hes very accommodating with his availability outside of the classroom and is more than happy to help students who aren't understanding material. While the class is very difficult, he makes success achievable with his lectures, office hours, and support class (both optional)
MATH 400 is not an easy class and Professor Olsen is a hard teacher, however, he is more than willing to help you out A LOT if you put in the effort and show that you care. I thought I was going to fail in the first few months but if you take the support class and attend office hours as much as you can, you can really turn things around.
He gives out mindless assignments through this program call HIPSTR which is just a simple term for how lazy can I get as a teacher. He just slaps down the book and expects you to know. He doesn't teach and uses videos as explanations. Just another FLC, los rios teacher.
One of my favorite teachers of all time + I met my girlfriend in his class. I sat in the front. 2/3 of the class dropped. Ask questions as soon as you are confused, attend office hours to review homework, take the EC courses, you'll be fine! Calculus has a learning curve but it gets easier. Note: 2.5hrs of straight lecture @8am requires coffee.
Prof. Olsen is a nice dude who clearly understands Calc but does not know how to teach it. When confused you may ask the same question 4 or 5 times before he can dumb it down to an understandable level. Will answer any questions, almost to a fault as you may not get help due to him helping others. Lots of HW, hard tests and quizzes, useless notes.
This professor is a kind dude, but CANNOT teach! He is fun and is really sweet but jumps around in his lectures and gets off topics A LOT! His tests require that you understand what HE wants, so getting help from tutors is useless. His tests are hard and there is a LOT OF HOMEWORK!!!!
Professor Olsen is great for those that are really wanting to build a fundamental understanding for calculus one. He gives out difficult tests but allows for lots of errors and partial credit. ATTEND HIS OFFICE HOURS. He will help you. He assigns a lot of hw, which can be a problem if you don't have time. Also has replacement exam. CALC is not easy
He is a really nice guy and makes a lot of funny jokes, which made the classroom environment better, but the class difficulty was too much to handle in the end. You really need a good understanding of trig and algebra or else you will not survive this class. The tests are no joke, do study is you take this class.
Prepare to put in serious effort if you take this class. Professor uses a unique system with HIPSTR assignments, but staying on top of them and using resources like Unstuck ai can help. Overall, a challenging but rewarding experience.
Very reading-heavy class. Unlimited attempts on homework, there are anywhere from 20 to 60 questions on each homework assignment, and you usually get two assignments per week so it can be a lot. It helps your grade a lot though since you essentially get 100% on the homework portion. Took a while to grade the 2 projects but overall a good teacher.
Lectures were over 2 hours no breaks. Pointless lectures that you can't understand. Horrible test writer expect to not understand what he asks of you on a test. I consistently went to office hours and he did not even help me he went to work on something by myself leaving me to work on my own every time. If you are a girl he will give you an A.
Do not take this class if you care about your understanding of math. Olsen should not be teaching math he is clearly uncomfortable with teaching. The exam questions made no sense and were generally trying to confuse you. The lectures needed to be shorter or have breaks in between. I do not recommend this class.
The tests in this class were tough. Expect the average grade to be 60% per test. I feel like I learned more from the embedded tutor than I did from the pointless lectures. The Organic Chemistry tutor is your best friend all year. You are going to come home confused after every lecture, watch OCT, and instantly understand it. Avoid this class.
This guy is waaaay too socially awkward to be lecturing. He talks so quietly that you can't hear half of it and when you attend office hours or ask questions he just stares at you blankly sometimes and doesn't answer. Dropped, took this class with Jordan, and passed with an A+.
Marc Olsen is hands-down the best Professor I've ever had! He's an amazing teacher and explains everything in a way I could always understand. Incredibly caring and will do whatever it takes to help you understand the work and pass the class. If I could take all my math classes with him, I would. Amazing guy!
Professor Olsen is a great dude and cares about the success of his students. He is understanding when asking questions and does his best to address class concerns and feedback. Seems like different methods of homework are being figured out which is ok. This class is definitely on the difficult side, I mean it is calculus though.
very conceptually based, which just personally wasn't helpful for me. 2.5 hour lectures with no break, very little practice material for exams (mostly came from TA and wouldn't cover everything we learned), a lot of bookwork, and we got so behind and had to play so much catch up that we would have to watch lectures outside of class. slow grader.
Everything you hear about conceptually based teaching is true. He teaches less math and spends more time on proofs and concepts. Sometimes he will start an example and not finish all the way because "you understand it". Very difficult especially if you have the morning class.
I would say he's a very caring professor and he wants you to pass. However, the problem with him is that he does not teach the curriculum that well and his class is very test heavy. I do not recommend taking him unless you have previous Calculus experience.
