He is an awesome professor. I would definetly take his class again. Very easy going and relaxed. Makes it easy to do performances.
I wouldnt say this class is easy. Its very time consuming and he takes it very seriously. A little TOO seriously. If you dont like public speaking/performing/writing/group work....this class is not for you.
Marc is the best teacher I have had a CSULB. Comm 333 is an acting class. You will act 5-8 minutes or two pages from each book that you read. I took the one week class and it was very intense, but fun. You must be committed to this class to get a good grade. He expects a lot, be ready to read a lot, memorize a lot and perform a lot.

Dr. Rich is a great professor and is a phenomenal human being. I have the utmost respect for his views and his passion for social change. He is definitely a professor whom everyone should have the pleasure of knowing or at least studying with.
One of the best classes i have ever taken at any college/univ. i would recommend marc to anyone who is hoping to not only be enlightened and educated, but also to gain respect for yourself and others. I have learned so much about myself that i will most probably carry with me for a very long time. Take him if u want to have a fulfilling experience.
Excellent teacher who definitely knows the material from both research and personal perspectives. Always helpful and open to new opinions. Works with touring CSULB student troupe bringing discrimination presentations to high school students. Also counsels women victims of assault. He lives what he teaches.
Great professor! because of him I changed my major to comm. he is well spoken and passionate.
the paradigm shifts keep coming! -Jeremy Veenker
He was a great professor! He helped me to realize things about myself I did not realize. The class was interesting...hard because it was time consuming but what can you expect from a one week class. The best part is he doesn't just lecture like most professors. He was a great prof and I definitely reccommend you take a class from him.
I was option 2 where attendance was not mandatory. Read your book if you are opt 2. Read the articles, and study his outlines, and study guides. I was able to pull a B by keeping up with the ready. His tests are a bit hard and questions are concept based.
Not sure if 335 is Storytelling but that is the class I took with him... I took the one week 9 hours a day winter session class and I couldn't have made a better choice. Dr. Rich is a genious of his craft, and compartmentaizing (sp?) the day into activities (fun!), lecture, films, and presentations makes time fly. You gotta be 100% dedicated though
Really interesting class. I was opt 1 so attendance was mandatory to get all the info. But I enjoyed going to class. He is great. His notes that he posts online are really helpful!
DR. MARC RICH IS A VERY EFFECTIVE PROFESSOR AND AN INTERESTING ONE AT THAT. I WANT TO THANK DR. RICH FOR MAKING ME WANT TO ATTEND CLASS EVERY WEEK. I WAS IN OPTION 1 AND THE WRITING ASSIGNMENTS WERE OUT OF THIS WORLD. I'M A BETTER WRITER THAN A TEST-TAKER, SO HE MADE THIS OPTION A GIVEN ONE AND A NO-BRAINER TO ME. THANK YOU.
This was the one week class during summer. I am a Liberal Studies major so many of my professors in the ITEP program are not top notch but Marc was. BEST PROFESSOR i have had at csulb. This class was so fun and the work was manageable. Highly recommend it.
I took this class over the summer, it was a 5 day, 9 hours a day class. It was actually better than I expected it to be. There was a quite a bit of work, but they way he breaks up the class is great. Some of the stuff was pointless but other than that I would definitely recommend this class.
I can say honestly that this class was the best class I have ever taken. Dr. Rich is such a wonderful teacher and he does his job extremely well.
Thank you for the experience we all had in your class the past year. We'll surely miss you
Professor Rich is one of the best teachers at csulb for sure. Take his class if possible. He makes class very fun! COMM-130 in general is a sucky class cuz its common sense but the professor is dope!
I took his 1 week class during summer session. It was one of the hardest and most stressful weeks I had ever had academically. Prof. Rich is a great professor and a cool guy. Just know that to do well you have to put in 100% during class and at home. The reading wasn't bad but the group project was demanding. Put your mind too it and its done.
Took this class awhile ago over summer. One of the hardest classes, but it was rewarding to get to know everyone really well in such a short time. Just know if you're not good at public speaking, you won't get an A.
I knew this five day class would be hard, but it was HARD. Regardless, I would highly recommend taking his class. Dr. Rich is a great professor.
I took the 5 day winter course and would definitely recommend it! It was a 9 hour day with a lot of work but it was manageable. The class was tons of fun and the week went by so quickly! It is a great/fun way to finish a class fast and Dr. Rich is awesome!
I took the 5 day winter course, and this class is amazing. Professor Rich loves what he does, and it really makes the class very enjoyable. This class is not hard at all. He gives quizzes everyday, based on a few pages of reading, and they are really easy. TAKE THIS CLASS DURING THE WINTER. It's probably the best time to take it!
Hands down best class i have had in my college life. Rich is fair and pushes you to the next level. Trust what he says and you will do fine. i wish all my classes can be taught in the 5 day format super intense but extremely rewarding. if you can take this class Rich will make you a better student, speaker, and performer.
Rich is awesome! This class was so much fun and i learned a lot. I took the 5 day session and the days went by really quick. It was really demanding, but well worth it. I highly recommend this class, and Dr. rich.
BEST CLASS EVER!!!!! This is a 5 day class, worth every penny and you get three units. The class is impacted, though extremely rewarding. I wish it was a requirement for the COMM MAJOR, so everyone can experience this GREAT class. Thank you DR. Rich the class was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class was great! It is demanding due to it only being 5 days, but you will grow so much in those 5 days! Dr. Rich helps you the entire time and makes the class enjoyable and memorable. He pushes you, but in turn you grow a ton! The first day may seem intimidating, but STICK THROUGH IT! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Really interesting class! Dr. Rich had great examples and stories that really enhanced my understanding of the topics. Highly recommend this class.
Favorite class EVER. It was scary the first day, thinking there's no way to do all he expects from you in 5 days (Readings, speeches, huge group project). But Dr. Rich really pushes you and surprises you of what you can accomplish. I'm sad that not everybody gets to experience this memorable class! TAKE THIS CLASS.
One week class? What was I thinking? Prior to taking Dr. Rich's class, I had no idea what to expect from a one week course. The class is very demanding, but extremely eye opening. I can honestly say that this class has been the best class I've taken at CSULB. I've learned a lot about myself in a course of one week. DON'T GIVE UP!
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Dr. Rich is passionate about what he teaches and makes the class fun and interesting. Do the assigned reading, use the study guides and the quizzes and tests will be a breeze. No papers! Just short, simple journal style assignments. DO OPTION 1. It's such a great experience!
Class is distinguished by the 2 options he gives; good for different learning styles. Extremely inflexible on grading however. Tests are concept-heavy, so lack of attendance hurts. Other than that it's a fairly standard left-wing comm course with all the usual disavowal of whites, America, & western society in general-think Ward Churchill articles!
Dr. R teaches Comm352 in 5 days, which seems crazy on the 1st day, when you wonder how you'll survive, & the last day, when you're amazed by everything you accomplished. You'll work harder than you've ever worked in an undergrad class, & Dr. Rich will do the same to help you succeed. Drop EVERYTHING for a week and take this class-worth the effort!
I took Storytelling with Dr. Rich over winter session in 5 days. It sounds crazy because it is crazy. There is a lot to get done in a week, but somehow Dr. Rich makes it fun and makes you want to come back. I would definitely recommend taking this course! Dr. Rich is an incredible instructor.
Dr. Rich is not only a great professor but an amazing person as well. I highly recommend taking this course. a class in 5 days may sound intense but he helps you along the way. Great class and experience!
Dr. Rich's class is one of the best that I have taken my entire life. He taught and gave me feedbacks on how to improve my communication skills. He provided suggestions to improve. Do the reading and you will pass the tests 100%. I got to know my group so well as we worked so hard. In the end, we performed splendidly. You're the best Dr. Rich!
This class is NOT for the faint of heart! It's demanding and forces you to challenge yourself, but Dr. Rich creates an environment that helps facilitate getting out of your comfort zone. PICK A GOOD GROUP and you're golden as long as everyone commits to working hard and working TOGETHER. Don't expect to bail at 6pm!
Dr. Rich taught me communication skills and techniques that I was able to apply to my work immediately. It's hard work for 4.5 days, read all assignments, and you'll do well. The average day that I spent was about 12 hours. Within a few days, I over came my fear of public speaking. Not entirely but much more comfortable now than before.
This is one of the best classes I have ever taken. He gives you two options - #1 you show up to class every week and do assignments, or #2 just do the tests. Do #1!!! You learn so much and his lectures are awesome. He gives study guides for the tests so they aren't too bad. There is reading, but it isn't too bad. Such a great professor!
Marc Rich is amazing. So intelligent and knowledgable about almost everything. The first day of class will turn you off. You have to choose whether or not you want to take harder tests and never go to class or go to class and be given a buffer. I chose the second and loved it. His lectures are so interesting and engaging. 10/10. 4 exams.
Marc Rich gives amazing lectures and some that changed the way I view our society. I chose option 1 - the assignments are easy and usually only a page long. The engagements are basically personal opinion. He posts the lectures on Beachboard after class and his lectures + the PowerPoints online definitely helped me get an A on all 3 exams.
He is a grew teacher! as being a girl, a learned a lot of things to use out of the classroom. lectures were always interesting, he posts them on BB, you have two options to choose from. i recommend him!
Despite taking class from 7-9pm weekly, I always looked forward to attend the lectures. Dr. Rich is a great professor who really gives you an insight into the many aspects of intercultural comm. You have the option to attend class, do the assignments + exams OR don't have to attend class and just take exams. Either way, it's a fun and easy class.
Amazing professor! Really enjoyed taking his class- highly recommend! You will learn a lot from his class.
Dr Rich is truly inspirational. Within few weeks of his class I realized that I didn't need the class to graduate but I stayed because I really enjoyed his insights. Eye opening.
Dr. Rich's class is truly inspirational. You learn invaluable lessons that you can take w/ you outside the classroom. There is a lot of readying & quizzes that follow, but nothing you can't handle. Tests are hard so study. He posts the notes online & gives a study guide. He's a straight forward kinda guy but I highly recommend because of lectures!!
Great Professor! One of the best I have taken at CSULB. Go to class, take good notes and follow study guides, you'll do well!!
Dr. Rich knows his subject extremely well, and his lecture style is incredible. He makes everything simple and understandable, and posts the lectures when he's done. Very clear outline of reading schedule, and it's not that much reading. He has two grading options. I picked the second, only took tests. Learned a lot and really enjoyed.
This was the best class I have ever taken. Probably the best professor I have ever had. He is smart, knows his material, and really cares about others. The readings are interesting and the videos we watch are great. I honestly felt better after attending his class. If there were more Dr. Rich's in the world, it'd be a better place. The guy rocks.
This class was honestly very eye opening, however it was not an easy class. He gives students 2 grading options (tests only or tests with assignments). I highly recommend choosing tests with assignments. His exams are very hard, so if you don't study good luck. Go to lecture, take notes, and learn the value of intercultural communications!
Definitely one of my favorite professors at CSULB, he's very inspirational so lectures go by quickly and you learn a lot. Beware because even though he seems laid back, his exams are difficult. Study hard and an A is achievable.
I took Storytelling over the winter session. It's a 3 unit course you complete in 5 days. 45 hours total, 9 a.m-6:00 p.m. The time flies by and you will be amazed and what you will accomplish! The days are long but Dr. Rich challenges and teaches you great tricks to test your memory and gain "laser beam" focus. Total respect for Dr. Rich.
Truly life changing. The class seemed like a ball breaker with the class lasting five days straight for nine hours each day but the day flew by so quickly once we were in the class. If you are willing to put forth the effort and open yourself to a challenge, you won't want to leave all of your new comrades at the end of the week.
Dr. Rich is the kind of Professor you will remember literally the rest of your life. The information and the way he teaches it stick with you. You will never love going to a lecture more in your life. All professors should lecture like this. Has to be one of the best profs at CSULB. He really challenges you to think and thats the big take away.
1-Choice of taking class in person with less test questions or with occasional attendance and more test questions. 2-Reading selections are powerful, challenges your politics and convictions 3-Five random in class quizzes are based on readings so READ! 4-Exams online are TOUGH, study guide given. 5-Six dropbox assignments. Awesome professor!
This class is absolutely life-changing. You learn a lot about yourself, the other students in the class and other cultures. You will work hard, but it's fun. This is not your typical communications class. Dr. Rich is a true professional, cares about who and what he is teaching, is encouraging and motivating. I highly recommend this class!
Took this course during the winter semester and I dont regret it. It was tough for me in the beginning because I get nervous presenting in front of class , but I learned so much. I was surprised of how much you can learn and get to know people in just one week. I highly recommend this class !
I took this course over summer 2018 as the 5 day intensive course and would do it all over again! Prof. Rich is an amazing teacher who cares deeply about the well being of his students (you!) and the course is extremely interactive and bonding. I would highly recommend to a friend.
Dr. Rich is hands down one of the best professors at CSULB. His classes are by far not the easiest classes, but he really pushes students to their greatest potential. Taking a third class with him in the Spring, Comm 352 was a life changing class for me. It allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, interact with my peers, and challenge myself.
Marc Rich is the best professor I have ever had. The 5 day intensive winter course was difficult but awesome and I learned SO much from him. I'm excited to take the techniques he taught us in class into my future classroom.
GOOD LUCK ON EXAM 75 mins 50 questions. 90s for one question.
COMM 352 (Winter Session) goes by quick since it's condensed into one week. With that being said, yeah it's a lot but doable. He gives you the right tools to get out of your head to believe in yourself. Group projects was a load of hard work but fun!
I took Storytelling with Dr. Rich in person over a 5 day period. Yes, it was a lot of work--readings, quizzes, solo performances, and a big group project. But honestly, this class was amazing!! 3 units in 5 days is so worth it and Dr. Rich couldn't have been more supportive. Take this class!
Dr. Rich changed my life with his lectures. He is a very knowledgable person and takes care of his students. Storytelling was only 5 days during Winter, it was a lot of work but it was worth it. I highly recommend taking him for 352 and 330. I believe he is the best professor at CSULB.
Dr. Rich is AMAZING and his class is really fun! I took his first online class for summer 2020 due to COVID-19 and honestly he made the so much fun! It sounds like a drag but it wasn't. The class is tough but honestly just be positive and you can do it! Best class I have ever taken. First class I loved ALL my classmates! SO SO COOL!
I took this class for May Intersession (Online due to COVID-19) and I got to say I actually ended up really enjoying this class. So far it's been my favorite class at CSULB. It might seem intimidating because it is only 5 days, BUT DON'T BE AFRAID OF THAT! YOU CAN DO IT! You'll build great friendships and Dr. Rich will help you however he can!!
Dr. Rich's storytelling course is an experience you won't forget. The one week course might be nerve-racking at first but there are lots of breaks to help you get through each day. There is a positive classroom environment and it encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone without judgement. Don't pass up an opportunity to take this course!
Dr. Rich is an amazing professor! This class was only 5 days, but by the end of it you'll wish it was longer. He makes the class easy to follow, and lots of fun! He gives a lot of breaks to help get through the long day. Most of the class was focused on the group project which is easy. By far this is my favorite class I have taken!
One of the best professor's to take in CSULB! Took Dr. Rich during Winter, which was only 5 days long (9am-6pm). He is very good on feedback and just wants to success for all his students. You do have to work for your grade by participation and performances, but definitely worth it!
I recently took Comm 352 which is a 5 day class and it was intense in a good way. Since this class is only 5 days long the hours were brutal. Even with the long hours this class has been one of my favorite classes at Long Beach State. The workload is very manageable 4 discussion post, 3 story telling performances and a group project.
I would not recommend taking him for COMM 330. I think he is a well-intentioned dude, and a captivating story teller, but the whole semester I just felt like he didn't really want to be teaching this class. Was also very unorganized and unprofessional at times. I also basically taught myself the whole semester. Take him, but not for this class.
honestly interesting lectures but his tests dont make sense and you have to teach yourself the material. Nothing from class lecture is on the tests and you have to read. plus option 2 is better but way too much work that is stressful when the quizzes are timed. save yourself and dont take him
Dr. Rich is a nice guy & tells interesting stories but 90% of the exam questions are not covered in class. This means you have to teach yourself difficult concepts covered in the textbook and hope that you understand it enough to pass exams that are written to trick you. He is also not in office hours so if you have questions, you are on your own.
Professor Rich definitely gives great and inspirational lectures. The class isn't an easy A class, rather you only get graded by 3 exams, so don't fail them. The exams as well as the discussions in class are based on the readings so make sure you do those. Not the easiest class but you will definitely learn a lot with him!
Was worth my one week out of my winter break and actually had to stay for the whole 9am-6pm class time, I highly recommend if you want 3 credits in a short amount of time. The group project was also the main part of the class. Dr. Rich actually discusses the differences taking it during COVID because of the less amount of workload vs. in-person.
This is a very difficult class, I have taken it twice. Be warned that this is a test heavy course. Class is essentially made up of three exams or an option of the three exams plus weekly quiz and discussion posts. First time I took the class I selected the exams only option- obviously that didn't work. Now taking option 2 and still struggling!
COMM 425 (COMM&VIOLENCE): 100% recommend this class, there is no class out there like this. Dr. Rich is an amazing professor who cares about his students. You will learn a lot from this class, it'll change your whole perspective of life. Threat assessment is important. There is a good amount of reading for this class, but all of it is a good read.
I took this class during winter break and I don't regret it one bit. If you have the chance to have him as your professor I suggest you sign up for his class. The workload was manageable considering we did a whole semester in a week. He was super fun, energetic and made the time pass by very quickly. 10/10 as a class and 10/10 as a teacher!
This class was amazing! took it as a one week synchronous class. At first, you feel like you took on more than you could handle, but then it quickly becomes a fun and doable course. You learn so much! Participation and attendance is key! Most, if not all, your assignments are done during the zoom class. This one gets you out of your comfort zone.
COMM 425 - Comm & Violence was eye-opening. It did not feel like work, more like a life class. You learn so much about yourself and safety. Take it to live a better life! You will not regret it. Short quizzes, short engagement exercises, some discussion question's. Two big projects that are doable. Pay attention and you pass.
COMM 430 Online only. I was nervous about what to expect from this course but it turned out to be a super manageable class the only thing is you have to do off site research and observation work. There's a quizzes based on articles each week. The assignments were nice because we could write in bullet points. There was a paper at the end.
i took Dr.Riich's online media/violence class (now comm 425) and he is an absolutely amazing professor! despite the class being long, it goes by fast since you're learning lots of interesting and helpful info! not many assignments either, no tests only couple quizzes, simple discussion q's assignments and 2 presentations (1 is the final)
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I took the once a week, 3 hour class and while at first it is a challenge, this class opens your eyes to the real world and safety. There are 10 discussion q's, 5 quizzes, and three projects (super easy if paying attention). Camera must stay on and be prepared to participate if called on. Take if needing a UD class! Book is free!
Be prepared to do alot of reading including unconditional articles and teach yourself! Most materials were not covered in class. Asked for help and I was directed to the Tutoring center. Timed weekly quizes are due before class & 3 timed exams with misleading questions under lockedown browser, closed notes & camera on. He is a great storyteller.
Took Marc for intercultural comm online and stopped showing up, You do not need the book, easy class to pass, the material is pretty woke, but the online tests were easy to get a good grade. He is not very flexible with turning things in or taking test outside of the normal time.
Professor Rich had very specific lectures and notes. I'd also recommend taking notes ahead of time and working on the readings as well. I have to thank Professor Rich for making his exams and quiz's very specific with the material that we learned. The extra credit opportunities were very nice of him to offer.
