He really knows his stuff but takes it very seriously and expects you to come prepared.Notes very important.you can use them during the exam.He always goes overtime and won't stop talking until 1/4 of class finally gets up and leaves.Attendance important.
Beware, checks attendance twice (in the beginning of the class and in the end). Very serious about this stupid meaningless 2 credit class. Understands russian but conceales it beware ;)
If you're looking for the easy version of this core this ain't it , work isn't hard but if you're absent twice there goes your A , he's fanatical about attendance-FANATICAL!!!
Psycho. Need I say more? Take Taylor.
2 credits? noway... he makes it like more...
i definitely do not recommend him at all!!
This Prof. is an *ss! Takes himself way too seriously. Teaches well, and very interesting subject. But again, way too serious and insulted easy. ****!!
Crazy about attendace/lateness. Will take it twice each class. Also very unorganized in his writing. He will write all over the places on the board so it's easy to get confused unless you pay attention to the lecture, which by the way is very boring. The Midterm is EASY, though. The final IS NOT.
it is possible to pass him if you take notes and dont miss classes.Notes are very important!!!!
Very hard teacher for this kind of class. Two papers, two very hard exams. First exam was on the second class meeting. Fanatical about attendance. Missing even one class will lower your grade. Being late in his class and he will dramatically lower your grade.
A little too serious about what he teaches and finds music in everything even in outside noise. Passionate about music. Attendance is very important and dont raise your hand if you are not 100% sure about the answer, will make you feel stupid. Final exam is long. Listen to CDs thoroughly.
Very serious Prof. and takes attendance very seriously. His test are def. tricky BUT if you study HARD you'll do fine. Final consist of listening, identifying composers, and 2 essays. Makes the class very hard for what it really is. If there is any other profs teaching the class pick them first as he is a harsh grader.
Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!
I wrote that he was horrible and I do not renig that comment. He is fair but very rude. He keeps you in a cloud of ambiguity about his exams unless you aggressively ask him. You will be sleepy but if you pay attention you will do fine. I managed to get an A so he is fair. I learned a lot, probably more than I need to hold a decent conversation.
Very Bad, don't take he will give you vey bad grade after all work that you done.
Very easy, great for the summer, no HW, just 1 concert report, no need to read the book, just taking notes is enough. The easiest exam, writing-intensive, but you can use your notes. With minimum studying you can easily identify biographies and music. I liked the lectures too. He does have an attitude, just disregard that. I got A with min efforts.
Great professor! Highly recommended! The music are very interesting! Do ur project and pass the quiz it will help a lot!
Great Professor! He is very thorough and he knows his stuff! Highly recommended
The class is not very hard if you enjoy the subject. Important to memorize the music that is assigned. Tests are based off class lecture. 2 fair quizzes, one paper, and midterm and final are tough but you can get a good grades with a few hours of work.
not bad, took for summer got an A. listen in class, take notes and ull be fine. 1 short paper, one short quiz, and a pretty big final. final consisted of 15 song identifications, 7-8 biography identifications, and 2 essays. takes attendance. just make sure u ace those exams and u will be good.
He is very interesting, I actually enjoy going to class, he is really funny and a nice person. I wouldn't say that he is easy but if you take his class you will learn so much and you will receive a good grade because everything he teaches is very interesting even if you're not into music.
he is really nice since he gives you 113 possible points instead of regular 100 with many extra credits and rewards, and plus he is a great professor, clear and definetely knows his stuff, i would recommend him highly
Awsome Professor, makes clear exactly what he expects from students from day 1 so that no one should get anything less than an A. Attendance was important, but all the operas and music clips made the class move along quite quickly:)
This guy seems a little weird at first, but hes cool once you approach him. He'll work with you as long as you let him know the deal. Just pay attention to his lectures, it beats hitting the books. Follow the syllabus and listen to the music thats assigned. Attendance is a must in order to get the extra points. BoMBed the FINal but still got an A.
Whatever you do do not take him. He makes you do alot of work. You fall asleep listening to his operas. He thinks you have no life but his class. The worst teacher i have ever had in my college career. Do not take him!!!
you must take good notes in class, write a concert report, and do some discussion board homeworks. the homeworks are a lot of work but u dont need to read a textbook. short quiz and a final. not too bad for summer. a lot of work but at least your done. listen well in class and do the work and u will get an A.
Whoever said that he is a bad professor should go back to high school. He is amazing and interesting, I got an A+ with a minimum of work, loved him and his class and became interested in music, take him in the summer, just listen to the Rhapsody tracks and study around 20 definitions for his quiz, the concert report is really easy just describe it.
THE BEST!
take notes on all clips he shows and everything he says. thats what the exams will be on. plus music you have to listen to at home. homeworks are not so bad, exams are ok. if you study your notes and do the hws you will do well. dont be late to class. took during summer and got an A.
many homework, some short quizzes, easy final. he doesn't use text book. it's really important to take notes in class but sometimes you can fall asleep listening to his operas.
This guy is very intelligent, he will make you interested in the subject and actually make you want to go to class. He is not easy, but I wouldn't say that he's tough. Do the work, thats why you're in college for right? Textbook was 30 pages at most and never used. took him during the summer, got an A and learned a lot about the subject. He's cool.
Had him for Summer, got an A from doing xcredit eventhough i bombed on the final. He covers a lot of material but you slowly become interested. Overall he is a fair grader because he curved on everything he gave us because the class did very poorly on the quiz and final. what more can you ask for. And I learned a lot to hold a decent conversation
Great professor! Clear lectures, interesting topics and classes with continuous samples that kept you from getting bored. Knows his stuff and his love of music is infectious. I learned a lot. He is also flexible and understanding. His style is rocking plus. Only minus is his slow responses to emails. Recommended!
3 easy homeworks, 1 concert report, short final. he literally puts everything on blackboard, studied night before exam, got A. Two minuses- very strict even if you are 3 min late, and NO use of 50$ textbook except for rhapsody subscription. Overall, you will learn a lot about music.
Unbelievable. He makes me want to change my major. His enthusiasm for music is infectious and he knows what he's doing. He's a fantastic teacher! He's well-spoken and adorable. I LOVE THIS MAN.
Professor THorman was the best. He makes music very fun and interesting; he can be funny too at times. I took him for interssion and he gave us 3 assignment, a report, and final. It may seem a lot but these assignemnt and report were fun and interesting to do. So it was nothing. The final is easy as well...just make sure u listen to the music!!!!!!
Excellent professor. The class is not hard, and he is not a hard greater either. The class is not boring. He takes attendance. The best professor.Very Easy. I recommend taking him.
thorman is great prof... i took in summer. listen tracks, concert report and no final, just 2 papers for final. little long but he grades farely..feel free in writting
Professor Thorman is a really knowledgeable professor. He shows a lot of videos that make the class interesting. Is there to help his students, and really likes what he teaches. Offers extra credit which really help out a lot. Definitely recommend this professor.
I took him during the winter session and was nervous sitting everyday for 2.5 hours but the time flew by. He only gave us the concert report and a take home final which was an essay. Very Knowledgeable and interesting! Recommended! oh and attendance wasn't required but gave extra points if u didnt miss a class. He gives Extra credit.. Take him!

He is a good professor but gives quite a lot of work. Final (tells you whats on it) Concert report and 3 essays all that needs to be done within 3 weeks (intersession).. good guy but needs to ease on the work load for an intersession course
Ok so just took his class. gatta say hes pretty boring and there will be quizes every class which you must study for bec these quizes add up and count towards your grade. All his teaches are from youtube. He gives out around 130 points so even if you mess up you got plenty extra credit. Fair grader. I would recommend.
I absolutely LOVE this man!!! The BEST professor I have ever had in BC. He has really interesting personality and his lectures cant get boring. I learned alot from him, and yes he is inspiring so i wanted to change my major. You have to show ur work to get an A, its easy though. A MUST take!!!
Easy class. There's a lot of quizzes - two and sometimes three per class. The quizzes are easy if you study. He tells you what you should know for the quizzes. Also, he gives a lot of extra credit which makes it hard to not get an A. Take him!
Its a core class but he makes you work hard. Be ready to spend too much time on home works, and write an essay. Make sure to write a source on your essay otherwise you will get 000000
i love LOVE this prof. he's makes mer wanna change my major he has so much passion about what he teaches. however u do have to be in class cuz he test u on what he said in class! RECOMENDED. just be there and pay attention and all youtube videos anyway u wont get bored it's MUSIC <3
He's so random, the class can be a keyboard masterclass or music history lecture when he supposed to teach us music theory...
he is one of the easier music professors. there is no midterm and final. just quizzes at the beginning and end of the class that counts as your attendance and grade. no notes, no book. the class is interesting. and Professor Thorman is a weird guy. he sometimes sings and dances
No midtermfinal, your grade will be solely based on short 3-6 question quizzes he gives each lecture in the end of semester they add up and form your grade , he gives one 3-4 question quiz in the beginning of the lecture and one in the end, so you can't come lateleave early, take home tests are rare. Also will take 2 extra credit essays.
THIS CLASS CONSUMES ALL OF MY TIME. I WOULD RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS IF IT IS THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE TO DO. THE READINGS ARE ALOT AND THE VIDEOS ARE LENGTHY AND TIME CONSUMING. I GET ANXIETY ATTACKS FROM THE WAY THE QUIZZES ARE DONE.
all about quizzes. Two quizzes each class. Quizzes based on lecture reading. lecture too long, boring. You fail quizzes, u fail class
clear grading. policy no midterm or final. quizzes daily (usually 2) based on assigned readingwatching videos. Spend 25 minutes before class looking at assignments and you will get A. Very passionate and calls people out in class for sleepingbeing on cell phones. attendance mandatory to take and pass quizzes. recommended. would take again
Was a horrible teacher. Starts quizzes at the same exact time class starts. Lectures are incredibly boring and you have to walk out of the class just to even LOOK your phone. If he sees you on your phone, he takes off 2-5 points depending on the person. Quizzes are nonsense and he doesnt allow you to use notes or see the videos. He's mean and rude.
I really can't recommend this professor. He is nice enough, but his lectures seem to be him just going off on a tangent on what he thinks is interesting. The class is way too long (almost 3 hours) which makes room for there to be a ton of extra content that we don't need to know. It's too long and it's a boring class.
For all the people that think hes hard, they dont know what its like to take a music core class where you have to write papers and make presentations. Class out of 116 points. Every quiz you take is 4 points toward your final grade so all you need is a 92 to pass. Just show up, take the quiz, and leave. Easiest A ever. quiz answers in online notes
He is good if you are interested in music. Every class there are multiple quizzes: one in the beginning and other at the end of the class. No midterms and final. Your grade is based on the quizzes. Get ready to work.
I had Professor Thorman in the fall semester on Mondays. The grading policy he has is a bit strange where you have a quiz or two every week but they are really simple. However, there was a midterm and a final. He's kind of chill. Btw, he hates it when people have their phones out "during" class and is very strict about it.
Extremely boring. Not recommended. Takes points off if you look at your phone or if you spend more than 10 mins in the bathroom
This is the worst professor EVER, he marks your quizzes late if you take time before class to print your typed paper. He actually tried to throw me out the class for taking a break midway thru our classes which were 3 hours of booorrrriiinnnng!!!
Boring with a capital B unless ur super passionate about music. Cares about attendance and if you use your phone. Lots of quizzes which are actually worth a lot- if you get one question wrong, it's a point of your entire grade. DO NOT recommend if ur just taking this to satisfy the core
Would never take this professor ever again. The most boring class and toughest professor I've ever had. You have a quiz every week, on material you have yet to learn. Final is optional, but definitely needed if you're not meeting his expectations. Extremely tough grader and does not offer extra credit.
Prof. Thorman is very passionate about music. We have take home quizes. and in class quizes almost every week which I dont think its a big of a deal as everything is on the material provided except for 2 or 3. Attendance is part of your grade and yes he dislikes very much the use of the cell phone in class its more about respect than anything else.
Great Professor! One take home quiz a week and one to two in class quiz a week, pretty simple.
Marc Thorman is a good professor and my experience in the class was decent. Gives take home quizzes and in class quizzes that are worth your entire grade. Class can drag on and found myself trying not to fall asleep but that's mostly on the professor considering the content was interesting. Overall not bad, still think i deserved a better grade tho
Really easy A. Very boring lectures but if you want an easy A take this class! There are take-home quizzes and in class quizzes and all the notes are on blackboard. As long as you show up to class and put in a little effort for quizzes you'll do really well.
He's great. quiz almost every day but he tells you everything before hand so its fine. No papers, no tests
Too hard so much keywords
Easy A. I took it as a once a week class. One take-home and one in class quiz every week. He posts all the notes and quizzes on blackboard. Also he grades out of like 110. Just do the quizzes and you'll get an A.
small quizzes (3-5q) every class - he posts the qs + all material up before the actual quiz + take home quizzes every few weeks - pretty easy. grade is made up by these, so it's easy to do well. no midterm or final. the only sufferable thing is a boring lecture (but he's very knowledgable) and sometimes he'll cold call on u for thoughts, no phones!
He gave out a 3 long page quiz that made no sense and only gave us 20 minutes to complete it. He cant go three seconds presenting a video clip without talking and over explaining every detail about it. The lectures are not interesting and hes the only one into it. -10/10
I got an A in the class. At first, it was a bit boring. Eventually, I made friends in the class and we did take home tests together. The first quiz is easy (in class) if you study. He gives extra credit opportunities.
Easy A but only if you show up ( you can be a bit late though) and DO NOT be on your phone or even study or do anything other than pay attention; he will pick on you if you do. Nice n flexible; participation is not mandatory; 2 quizzes, a midterm(take-home), and a final(take-home); gives extra credit (you can attend concerts and write about them)
Very good professor with a clear grading criteria. The material explained during the lecture is very simple and easy to understand. Everything you need is explained in class and on blackboard. Unfortunately, attendance is mandatory which is unnecessary since you can study from blackboard alone. My only pet peeve is that he can collect notes.
Was fooled by these good reviews for him. He gives boring lectures and picks on you if youre not staring at board. First in class test was easy if you study, the 2 take home test contained 75 questions with short response included and have to spend like a hour watching classical music and identifying instruments and dance. Would not take him again
I had him for intro to music and overall he's a really good professor, yeah theres "work" but its honestly not even that bad because you can get an A without stress. the first exam was in class and the midterm and final was take home with like 70 or 80 questions with videos that you have to watch but thats an easy A.
Honestly, this is one of the most boring classes I have taken in my life. It isn't tons of work, but it's very boring and he is very picky when it comes to grading. The group presentations is the worst, he is extremely picky with the grading. You have to attend class if you want to pass. And word of advice, never use your phone. Don't skip class.
This professor, Marc Thorman doesn't care about students. He's strict with everything and his lectures are boring. I regret taking his class even though I've received an A grade.
His class is an easy A as long as you manage to stay awake.
Going to this class makes me want to cry every single time. You can't eat, can't put your head down, can't have your phone/laptop out. The most boring class I have ever had. He stares at the class to make sure everyone is paying attention 24/7. His exams aren't hard or anything but that class itself is intolerable. Sure he's a nice guy but too dry
Professor Thorman is talented and you can tell that he is passionate. However, he is strict with paying attention. His lectures are EXTREMELY BORING. He's a nice man but it's hard to stay awake in his class. There was only an easy in class quiz and two take home exams. All we did in class was watch youtube videos and listen to him talk-no notes
Professor Thorman isnt the worse, however he is a heavy grader. I took him for MUSC1300 online, and I submitted every assignment, expect the last two and still somehow got a D+. He expects you to do piano assignments and send him the recordings of you playing the piano, which I find is a bit crazy. Two BB discussions every week and 4 papers.
Taking this class online is sooooo painful so please do at your own risk. You're basically teaching yourself
Amazing professor who is very passionate about his work. Took a net-g class with him so attendance was not mandatory. Do the work and its an easy A. reason I didn't care about the first few assignment. Easy A.
He's a great teacher and makes everything ready and available for you. His work is a little time consuming but its easy to access because he puts together a video each weak for discussion forum assignments.
Professor Thorman is great. You will have to watch many videos and read his notes, but if you just follow what he asks you to do.. then you'll pass. Many discussion boards but you go at your own pace since its an asynchronous class. Really nice and provides good feedback.
You should get ready to read lot of documents and watch many videos if take this class. The homework are mainly discussion board, MUST watch videos and read texts carefully to be able to do. However, Prof Thorman's teaching is easy to understand, and he give quick and detailed feedbacks. Just prepared your ears to listen lot of classical music !
Great professor, very knowledgeable in many forms of music. He had more knowledge of the current music and artist than I, and I'm supposed to be a Gen Z. Anyways, it is very reading heavy and listening heavy. He gives weekly writing assignments based on readings, so you have to do those.
Only have to do discussion broad but difficult.
Great prof! accesible and accomadating! For the online course, all of the info you need was provided for you in clear language. The workload was fair especially because it all depends on how you answer the questions instead of how long your answers are. Gives really good feedback and the videos are fun to watch.
Had this Professor during this Spring semester and he is very nice but overall it is tough midterm which has 4 parts on discussion board very complications and difficult. Final is a group project on your music. The last assignment is 15% which is finding a music relating to your culture and talking about it
I dread this class. He completley sets unrealistic and unfair expectations during class, like paying attention to his video and answering discussion board questions at the same time! No time to think and refer to notes. He assigns 4-6 DB questions and we have to answer all correctly for participation and attendacne CR. Also rude and uncooperative.
This professor and class are so boring. Took it as a gen ed and saw most reviews were positive. However, this is an async class so pacing is up to you but he is a strict grader and really wants you to pay attention to every little detail in his boring long lectures and nonsensical readings. You can't correct anything he is rude in email he's mid
async - pace urself entire course based on his website. best website ive ever used, no bugs clear & detailed rly interesting course material "tough grader" hes direct if ur wrong + can tell if u didnt read. not rude just blunt. not that smart but i read thru the site honestly, did the work & got 100s on everything except the assignment i missed.
Great professor!
Took this class on winter. Overall a very nice professor
Easy class but rude professor. If you don't give the right answer when he calls on you in class he gives major attitude, then proceeds to talk down on the class in general if nobody participates. Assignments are easy, but he takes the writings seriously.
He is a great professor, when I was having a hard time with classes and had problems with technical problems he helped out. Even when I was falling asleep due to studying and other classes he understood rather than admonish. Also a great professor that helped give time for any missed works you might have skipped or missed out on accidentally.
Couldn't stand this boring dude in that stinky classroom. All he did was yap and present his pre recorded lectures. As if his lectures weren't boring enough you had to watch his videos for H.W which made you wanna give up on day one. Overall as long as you sit in the back, you can have a free study session cause no one paying attention to him.
Took his online course and it was the lightest courseload, 4 “exams” that were around 40 points and 10 blackboard assignments that were 7.5 points each. Here's the kicker. He grades off of points accumulated, so you don't have to do all of the work. Accumulate 92 points and you have an A. Multiple opportunities for extra credit. Highly recommend!!
Where to begin, it is the most boring thing. Half the class looked liked they'd rather be rotting in solidarity confinement than attending his lectures. He had an attitude problem because no one is engaged with his class. Aside from being an old bum that farts dust, his course work is atrocious. You have to watch his lectures or he deducts points.
He's a really nice professor who's passionate about music overall. Course work is not that hard. Yes he's classes are a snooze fest but he really isn't that bad and an A is easy with him. If he's your last hope in finding a professor you're good
honestly don't take him if you don't have to. he wants you to memorize his lectures but when you ask questions he has rude replies. Gave me a nasty attitude when I asked a question about the homework.
This professor can be a tough grader, but if you engage with the detailed course website and do the work, it's an easy A. The material is interesting, and unstuck AI was super helpful for study prep.
he shows up with a stinky attitude and doesn't even answer question to the best of his ability. gives nonsense homework for a core class… room always stinks. honestly anyone else is better than him. Seems like a nice guy but the complete opposite.
I have taken 3 classes with him, 1 being online. If you take him online everything is so easy. He is overall a good professor, his assignments are easy but definitely get ready to pay attention, come to class bcs his attendance is mandatory. He is easy to work with if you communicate with him but he will get difficult if you do not come to class
amazing! He would make you explore different cultures. That is the best part.
