He is an Art teacher, dont plan on missing any classes. If you like order with everything as clear cut then do not take any of his classes, but if you love art TAKE THEM. It shows that he loves Art; even in the way he runs the class. If you are not an art lover find another way to get the credits you will have a hard time, he is Dionysian.
I have taken humanities 101 and mod art history from this professor. He knows his stuff, and is passionate about a wide range of subjects. I thought the previous review's use of the word dionysian was pretty good. Be ready to embrace the gray areas of existence. If you cannot function without black and white, you will stress. Enjoy art!
Very boring. Has a montone voice and that doesn't help when learning about the history of art. Doesn't answer questions and can never repeat if someone misunderstands because he forgets. Liked the art projects though some of them were a little strange. Told us to study for certain thing for the final and changed it the day of so no one was prepared
Monotone voice and not helpful. Forgets a lot so doesn't repeat himself when asked to. Told us to study for certain things for the final and changed it on the day of the final so no one was prepared. He likes art a lot and the projects were fun if not a little strange.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Assignments are extremely easy, and the test is incredibly hard, leaving you totally unprepared. Does not teach anything at all, merely tells you to read but does not say what you are expected to know. My grade is 50% higher than the class average, and my grade is 75%; does not tell you what was wrong.
Kinda an odd sense of humor, and an obsession about art.... but not a bad guy if you actually talk to him and ask questions
He means well, but wasn't at all interesting in my opinion. You go into class and he goes through slides of artwork and just rambles on the entire time. Tests are mostly questions from reading the text book, and the others are random and pointless, very hard test and he does not grade on a curve. Makes up info about artist opinion.
Difficult class, do not expect a cakewalk. However, if you like art you will really enjoy the class. He is a tough teacher, very vague, he wants you to make your own interpretations, not just take what he says verbatim and regurgitate it back to him on a test. You will use your book...What, reading in college, who would have thought?
He passes judgement on people, and it pretty much dictates your grade. There isn't really anything else to grade you on except the tests, and they are impossibly hard. He offers no direction, so you have no clue what info is relevant and what isn't. No way to be prepared for a test.
his exams were ridiculously hard. His reviews didn't help. And he didn't help.
what a waste of time and money, didn't even make a 2.0 as most of the class failed also. I was the highest grade in the class and still got less than a 2.0, this teacher is still a student at SCC so perhaps his poor grading of students reflects his inexperience. worthless class, avoid it all costs. hard tests, look at the other comments!
takes are very seriously, kinda funny, very nice.
Tests are extremely hard, not enough time given and count for much of the grade. Class made me dislike art not appreciate it.
This is the most ridiculous class I have ever taken. He is great a showing slides but is opaque when it comes to what information he wants you to study for. I worked very hard in his class and did not get a very good grade when compared to other harder classes I was taking. A waste of time. Find something else to take.
Yikes! I'm not sure whether his class was super hard or he just wasn't clear on what he wanted us to know before tests. I took Art history at SFCC and got an A, then I take it again (mistake) with Mr Arpin at SCC and got a C in the class. Nice enough guy just not the best teacher.
I liked this class, i found it challenging and I liked the teacher. He is a good teacher and assigned interesting projecst and assignments, If you would like to learn something and be challenged then I highly recommend this teacher.
I had him for Ancient/Medieval and Renaissance/Baroque art. He is not a very good teacher. His tests are hard because often there will be questions that we didn't cover in class. He is not helpful and not clear. Plus, he doesn't teach--he tells you to rely on the book. The material is so interesting but it's a shame he cant teach it well.
Very boring class. You come in and he lectures the whole time in a monotone voice. His tests are easy enough if you study. I barely used my book and didn't do much reading. All I did was take notes during class and before the test I would study my notes and the vocabulary words and paintings from the outline and that's it. Easy class but boring!!!
fun class
I love art and I was so excited to take the class. Arpin was a terrible teacher. He would tell us to study some paintings and that was it. 90% of the test would then be a mystery.
Mr. Arpin is way awesome! If you have trouble in his class it is because; a. you do not come to class, b. you don't read the little amount of assigned reading, or c. you are a teenage brat who insists on arguing your immature point of view on politics in the middle art class lectures. I loved this class and I'm not even an art class kind of chick.
I have taken this teacher for both online and in class and was barley able to passed both of the classes. I can say that this teacher is not very helpful both in class and online. The test are very hard, not clear on what to do on an assignment and he takes to long to respond back to emails. Overall avoid taking this teacher if you can.
Nice teacher. The lectures were extremely borind and it seemed like he didn't cover most of what was on the test in the lectures but, would always tell the class what to study from the book.
Not a bad professor at all, know his stuff. Just some people need to come to class and do the work. But, not one bad thing about this professor.
Im taking this class online. I would recommend it to anyone. It's far easier than what i've heard others say about in class. His assignments are easy to understand, and very good grader. If you turn in the work, you get all the credit, even if your point of view wasn't the same as his. So nice!
He cancelled class 5 times in just one quarter.Lectures are a little boring and test questions aren't always clear.attendance taken randomly.I thought the class would be more art history and it's a combination of that with art projects. The materials aren't super expensive but an additional $20-$40 on top of an expensive book
Fun lecture, adds to the book content but you have to read it to pass. He tells you what names to memorize, no surprises. If you don't pay attention you miss out, but the interactive nature/relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to learn.
Marcel is an artist. If you can't handle this class you don't belong in college yet. memerize the artiost on 12 or so works a test. Easy "A"
Great Class! Always glad to go. I learned to appreciate music in another way. As long as you attend class and take somewhat simple notes, and you'll do great.
Doesn't give exact answers because he lets you develop your own view. This is a class that gives you a better appreciation for for the Humanities. If you are just looking for an easy class and don't want to do anything,go somewhere else because this is a fun interactive class for those who want to learn. Participate, come to class and you will be ok
I took this class online. I thought it was really easy. Reading the book is defintely necessary to pass with a good grade. Overall I liked it.
Mr Arpin was great. At first I wasn't sure about his tone and if the class would be interesting or artistic. BUT IT WAS. I enjoyed the projects and the more you listened to him the more you realized he is just a calm spirit. : ) Thanks, Marcel!
The class is superrr easy. But NO feedback when doing an online class. I have emailed 3 times so far this quarter and got NO response- super annoying. You teach yourself.
Enjoyed the class so much I am taking another art class that I was not planning to take. I like the professor a lot and the more I listen, the more I realize how much he has to offer as a prof. He is NOT technologically inclined so I would never take an online class from him if I ever wanted to be in email contact with him.
Wonderful class! Amazing artist!
This class was very challenging for me! He is very quiet and like to keep the room very dark. His tests were challenging for me. Not a technology guy. He doesn't give busy work. I had only 3 tests all quarter. If you fail one test, your out of luck. I would never take him again. I got an 88% on the first test that I spent 10 hrs. studying on :(
The assignments are easy and the test's were hard. He ends up rambling about something for the entire class. He missed about 8-9 days of class overall. Disliked the class but easy A
Don't take classes from this teacher.
Marcel Arpin has a world of knowledge at his fingertips regarding the world of Art. This class was inspiring and helped me to see and discover Art in an entire new way. The lectures were full of incredible information and learning was actually fun. If you are a new student interested in gaining lots of information about Art, this is the class.
Marcel Aprin is a highly educated individual with a vast amount of knowledge on the world of art all available on spot through his inspirational lectures. He is a very accepting and understanding professor. He will work with you to ensure you do well in his class, and leave with a new found love, and knowledge base on the world of art. RECOMMENDED!
If you think you know art, then I recommend taking his class. I was able to look at art in a different perspective if not many and see how truly magical and impact-full art can be on society. There is definitely more there than meets the eye and Marcel has a great way of combining academia and the aesthetic properties of art within his classes.
His lectures may be a little drab but if you really like art and learning about it and some projects then you'll find class really interesting. He randomly sends around a sign in sheet some days so you may not get full points for the day if you skip. His tests are a bit difficult but if you listen to what he says in class and take notes, ull b fine
I took his class online and I found lectures and papers to be quite simple. The tests however were more challenging. He isn't very thorough in his syllabus and some of his lectures. Don't bother emailing him for help, he won't get back to you. I emailed him about 3-4 times through out the quarter and never got a response. Pretty easy class though.
Marcel just really doesn't seem to care about teaching an art class. He's a very dull person, and his class is boring.
Marcel was very quiet and kept the room very dark. He also rambled a lot and wasn't willing to discuss the homework requirements. The tests were hard and half of the material on the tests wasn't covered in class.
Marcel almost made me not graduate. I took his class because I needed an art credit. I passed his class with a 3.8 GPA. However, when he put my grade in he gave me a 0.0 GPA. My friend who had taken this class with me had her grade changed too and we could not get him to change it back. It finally took 4 quarters for me to finally change it back.
His lectures were interesting and he had funny stories, but they were long and his tests are hard. Although he doesn't have alot of assignments, be prepared for lectures, take good notes on both reading and lectures and be prepared to write about art. His tests include multiple choice, art naming and a paragraph describing an art piece.
This is the easiest class I've ever taken. He randomly passes out an attendance sheet to fill out a few times a week. Come to class, listen to lectures, take simple notes (especially if he says "You might want to write this down") and you'll pass with an EASY A. Grades on curve. Ask questions if you have them, he tends to forget to say things.
Marcel is an awesome person and teacher! And is totally under rated for this app, If I'm in a bad mood I know as soon as I get to this class I'll be happy for the rest of the day. Beware though his tests are not super easy and also hard to study for but if you put in the work and effort to be there and take notes you will definitely pass.
There was no interaction with Mr. Arpin all quarter as he didn't respond to any of my emails. Easy class, but since there's not a lot assignments, each point matters a lot. I missed a total of 12 points the whole quarter and that put me at a 3.7.
Professor Arpin's online class consisted of about 5 assignments, and 3 tests that were impossible. You were given 80 minutes to answer 70 questions that were probably randomly picked out of the textbook. To get a good grade on the test you would've had to memorize every little thing in the textbook. He will not answer your emails or phone calls.
Heavily underrated instructor. His tests will challenge how you see the world around you. His class is basically for the types of people that are driven to be cultured and simultaneously individuated in order to make progress of where they need to be going. Material is a bit tougher but is rewarding once you read between the lines to gain insight.
Marcel is a great teacher and really is passionate about art. The tests were pretty hard but he grades on a heavy curve.
Didn't respond to e-mails; forgot to post material needed for assignments, very few assignments and no study guides to help with tests. Tests are timed and unless you already know a lot about art, it is impossible to remember all the details.
He posts late about the readings and hw. Exams will get you and never know what mistakes you made. It seems that his exams have error in it. Oh you will never ever reach this professor like he is hiding! No email response and evade calls. Tuition not worth it, you can just buy the art book and learn from yourself!
Doesn't reply to emails. Posts too few assignments. Doesn't specify what he is looking for in assignments. Tests are confusing. Would not recommend him to anyone, which is a pity, because he's very knowledgable in the arts. He just can't teach.
He is highly rated when you take him IN PERSON but NEVER take him online. He doesn't understand how to do it so you'll be left in the dark for a very long time and then suddenly you'll have an assignment due in 2 days that you couldn't even look at until now and it's a week or more worth of work. TAKE HIM IN PERSON OR NOT AT ALL!!
Barely any work but when there is he is tough on grading. Took him a couple of weeks to get back to me. We barely use the overpriced textbook. He seems like he is trying to help but sometimes won't get back to you. The class in my opinion is not put together well. For the amount of work, the points need to be higher. overall it is confusing for me
I did not like this teacher in the slightest... He does not get back to you. gives you a poor grade and does not tell you why you got that grade. He only gives you an hour and 15 for quizzes and wants you to memorize all of it. which is hard for me because i do not do well with either of those things. I would not do another class with him.
Very nice professor. Just do what he wants you to do. Read your textbook and his PowerPoint, apply what you read to his assignments and you get A. He always guides you in his assignments. His class is more flexible, not too many assignments, and you have time to study. Great professor.
Will not respond to canvas messages. Most of his tests are only open for a single day and he does not give extensions or extra credit.
I loved taking this class, Professor Arpin was very nice and understanding, he will let you slide a day later than the due date on assignments if you have a legitimate excuse. He grades our work very well, and his class overall was very fun, if you put the effort in, you will get a good grade. I 100% recommend taking his class.
I took modern art as an elective at SCC in like 2008. Id just read Lies My Teacher Told Me, was about 20 and was at the peak of my personal cynicism re: everything. Marcel was open with us about a spat with the board and their viewing students as dollar signs. He nixed our research paper, with our approval, for fun art projects. Was pretty cash.
There were only two exams and they required the students to memorize small details in the 7-8 chapters we had to read in a month. When I realized that there were questions on the exams that were not mentioned in the chapters or very unhelpful PowerPoints I emailed him and he came back and said that it was mentioned. I would not recommend.
For this specific class there were only like 10 discussions boards (about 800 words each). That was basically the entire class. If you don't mind writing you will like this class. There were no lectures only PowerPoints you had to read and textbook readings. The professor is caring & gives feedback sometimes. Also, turn things in on time!
Professor is somewhat patient and willing to work with students. Does not accept late work. For Art 110: Has only 9 discussions (~800 words) for entire class. Likes it to be in essay format and is kind of a hard grader (sometimes). In general it's a flexible class. No lectures just have to read a lot of PowerPoints and textbook.
Never responds to emails. Takes about 2 weeks if you want a response. Is not clear with any sort of direction and or instruction for assignments that he posts. Many discussion boards and responses. I would not take this class with this professor. Definitely stick with someone else.
Had less than 10 assignments over the quarter, and they're pretty much all very leniently graded. The tests were a bit arduous and impacted my grade more than they maybe should have since there were so few assignments. Overall, very easy, stress-free class as long as you keep up on everything, which is a pretty easy task.
Professor Marcel Arpin is a nice and understanding teacher. However, it's not an easy class. you will have to work. His expectations are very clear and as long as you do the work on time you will get a good grade.
This course is mostly writing, but he grades leniently. If you do the writing assignments, you'll likely get an A on them. Also, a 4.0 is a 97% and above. The tests are what you have to worry about if you want a good grade. His lectures are very, very boring. I would not take this professor simply because of how tedious his classes are.
This class was all online. It was super easy to complete his class, but all of the bigger papers did NOT have a rubric/clear information and guidelines. He also doesn't answer any of the emails that you send him. He probably answered 2 out of all of my emails, which was a lot. To be honest, I wouldn't take this class again.
There wasn't much work but when there was/is expect around 600 word assignments pretty consistently. The grading rubric isn't very clear but if you follow the guidelines it's a pretty simple class.
His online class was easy, but his grading is irritating. There's no guidelines or rubrics for the assignments, and he gave me an F on a *completed* assignment, because I submitted it as a PDF file. He doesn't "open attachments." He also doesn't leave feedback on graded assignments, so you have no idea what you did wrong or how you can improve.
This class was not necessarily easy, but it was interesting. The professor was very engaged in discussion boards, which was a nice change from previous online classes I've taken. If you actively participate and complete the assignments you'll do fine. The assignments and tests are mostly papers, around 600-800 words each. Be prepared to write.
Great class, learned how to crochet for my project.
Nice guy, but he can't teach. I had the same issues with him that people have had for years - read the old reviews. He takes too long to respond to online messages, sometimes not at all. He is unclear in his feedback and has no rubric. Apparently his lectures were so boring, he heard about this critique and quit doing them. It was all PowerPoints.
The only good/easy thing we did was choosing to peruse an art hobby. The rest was ridiculous. All of the other assignments he posted were fairly easy after you spend an hour or more trying to figure out what he wanted from you/where to find the material. 90% of this class is figuring out HOW to do the assignment rather than learning.
Assignments vary from confusing minimal instructions to absolutely no instruction at all. He does not explain anything or give you any information you actually need. You will have to 'wing it' on most assignments. No actual learning or instruction. The laziest & not-interested instructor at SCC I have ever seen/heard of.
Professor Arpin's Introduction to Humanities course was diverse and engaging. I loved exploring art, music, and film. The Art Pursuit project was a highlight, giving us the chance to try a new art form and connect with the material in a personal and creative way. Highly remodeled!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, directions make no sense, 5 page essays ON A PAINTING TF?? along with 6 pages of NOTES and a ART PROJECT PRESENTATION + other random discussions and assignments (600-800 words) within the FIRST MONTH. if you wanted an easy 5 credits CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR
Class isnt too hard, consists of discussions, papers + an art project. However, his instructions are extremely unclear: one discussion said "5 posts of about a hundred words each for (500 words cumulative)" and that was it. I emailed him about it and it has been almost 2 weeks without a response. He also didn't unlock modules, so cant turn work in
Easy class but very unclear instructions, have like 7 assignments (papers, notes, discussion, art project). Never responds to emails and doesn't grade anything. Overall light workload
Professor Arpin disguises an Art class as a Humanities class. Learned nothing. If you need the credit and have a heavy quarter, take it with Arpin. If you actually want to learn and apply the knowledge, avoid at all costs. Emailed him in early Oct, it is now Dec and have not received any reply, so dont expect feedback. Hilarious = Hilariously Bad
