Great teacher. Very passionate about the subject he teaches. Very straightforward. Wants students to do well so he will help them; even on week-ends
Took his course years ago. OK.
SUPER-MEGA-GREAT TEACHER! lots of stuff to learn, though! His class is the reason I went to law school
One of the best profs I've had at Concordia. Very supportive and really puts in the effort to be there for his students despite how busy he is. Great course, lots of interesting stuff
Lot's of material in this class but he takes his time to explain everything to you and is extremly helpful. He will come in an a weekend and explain things to students...not too many teachers would do that.
This is a substantial class. But he is great. Explains everything and gives easy example! Very good prof.
Fantastic teacher! A lot of work in his class, but he's there for his students. He's organized and makes things interesting, and gives up his free time willingly (even though he doesn't have a lot of it) to make you do well. I've had a lot of teacher's and he's definately the best!
Simply the best teacher I've had so far. Lot's of material not easy if you have no interest in Law, he makes it very easy to understant, all his classes are filmed and are on the internet. Comes in on Saturday for review session, very approchable. Take him if you can.
Fantastic prof! The course work is not so difficult as longs as you study. If you don't care for law this is definetely not for you. If you are interested in law this is the perfect class with the perfect prof! Midterm is 30% and final is 70%, nervewrecking but do able, it's really important to keep up w/ material though b/c there is a lot of it
He is very nice and helpful, and really knows his stuff. The class is internet-accessible as well, which can help you review. He also brings in very cool guest lecturers, and does case studies on current-events legal cases throughout the year. Great class!
This is probably the best teacher at Concordia. He is so fair and so giving. Prof. Danis will do as much as he can to help students in any way possible. The course is interesting and the teacher is very knowledgeable on the subject matter. You will learn a great deal and have fun doing it.
Organized Crime online: Do not take this class. The quantity of reading material is way superior that it should be for a 200 level class. The TAs aren't helpful and the grading system is very strict. If you're going to take an online class, this should not be it.
This internet course was great. I took it last summer and it was great. The TAs were helpful and it wasnt hard. I studied 2 days before the exams and got an A. If your interested in OC then you wont have a problem, if your taking it only cause there is no class attendance, you wont do well. Im definately taking another of his course!
What happened this year? i took Oc and it was fabulous and resonable, this year im taking terrorism and its crazy! The midterm was WAY TOO MUCH! there was alot of complaints by the students on this...there were errors on the quiz questions too. I am definately not impressed this time around, suprisingly since Oc was so great
This online class was a little disappointing because there were no online lectures. That said, the material was quite well-rounded and interesting and I enjoyed reading the required articles. Instead of making a coursepack he puts the articles online where you can access them for free (muc appriciated). Straight foward exams.
Prof. Danis was a great teacher. He is a great speaker who is very passionate about law. In many cases he used real life examples in order to convey his thoughts...I personally found this very effective. I would highly recommend him for any political science course.
it is interesting stuff, but the midterm required a lot of research! i researched for for 5 days straight with very little sleep only to find inadequate info for the questions he was asking. in the end, i had to drop a course for the first time. it was THAT tough. there were many complaints from the students since there were errors in the questions
The best, period!
Amazing prof and amazing class. If you're interested in law, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. the class is set up perfectly for students who have a busy life...all classes are recorded, moodle is always updated, and there's even a guaranteed review class going over all the necessary stuff to study. This is a challenging but very FAIR course!
Professor Danis is just great. A criminal law course might seem dry to many, but this course is very interesting and concise. His lectures are recorded , the material is relevant, current and his trial stories make you want to hear more from him. You wont regret taking his classes, inspiring, genuine guy. He is a total delight !
Excellent prof. He will do anything and everything to help students succeed, and shows a passion and keen sense for what he teaches. Be prepared to study ALOT of material for exams (Poli 350), particularly the final, which covers two semesters worth of material. As hard as the class may be to some, he is a great prof who will do all he can for you.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!long reading to do,each week you got to answer a question (do you agree with...)only worth 1 point-impossible to get 1/1 even if you did VERY GOOD, you also have assignment every 2 week, require about3-4hrs worth 3pts,hardly get 2.5.please don't take this class! interesting but way to hard absolutely not worth it
This was one of the most interesting courses I have ever taken at University...even though it was online. Excellent stuff!
The best teacher ever. A+
A+ I recommend this M. Danis to anyone. A true gentleman.
I had an excellent experience with prof. Danis with his POLI 298f course (Terrorism), but was very disappointed with the experience with this one. My assignments were not corrected in a timely manner, the modules were late to be released, and my T.A. (Fran?) was AWOL. I don't understand how things could change from one course to the next.
Interesting Class. I understand that TA's are very busy but the grading took forever. Still haven't got final marks yet. Weeks later. 2 - 1000 word and 1 3000 word assignments just too much for them to be worth 3%. Alot of content for a 200 course. I must admit that the course courdinator Irene was very nice. Marcel was never there.
M. Danis is a great prof. His lectures are interesting and cover all the material. This prof will do anything for his students to help them pass. You have to keep up with the reading material and attend as many review sessions as possible.
A lot of work involved for a 200 course. The TA, Fran was completely useless. She was always the last one to put up grades and don't expect email responses to be timely. Comments on assignments are too vauge to be helpful and it's impossible to know that the final will be like. after this experience, i'm never taking an online course again.
Somewhat interesting topic, but the website sucked. You could tall it was old and that they had just updated some random stuff. THE TA'S WERE THE WORST EVER!!!!!!! They didn't reply to anything, gave conflicting answers, assignments were poorly written. GARBAGE COURSE. Take something with a real prof and no BS TA's.
TA's are unprofessional, uneducated, rude, vicious graders who abuse their authoritative role, especially Francisca. Avoid this filth.
Maitre Marcel Danis is my idol and a huge reason I am going to law school. I was already into law prior to taking his class but being taught by such a qualified and insightful legal professional was just the best experience I've had at any academic level of studies...However, if you are a slacker, you will not pass this course, I gaurantee it!
Danis is completely hands off, NEVER reponded to emails & posted videos from more competent professors for online material. B4 the final, many mandatory links didn't work, online forums were closed early & dozens of student complaints were completely ignored. we were left completely unprepared for the final my mark suffered enormously--never again!
i never knew you could be penalized on midterm/assignments for having too many facts and not enough original work - i didnt know it was a creative writing class?! stupid class with way too much work for an online class - very disappointed because i was really interested in this class at the beginning.
Very disappointed. I have taken MANY online classes & TAs were on top of things. Sadly for this class TAs didn't respond to our questions. They weren't helpful & dared to argue that we weren't following. For the final we had to know details of articles. To have a general knowledge of oc isn't important but what happened in court during a trial is?
A LOT to remember, however I found him anything but hard. I thought I would get around 60 on the midterm, I was off by over 25 points. I have no idea how he grades. I had all my exams in a 24 hours period and had very little time to study and still got a very high grade. His 200 level courses are harder than his law course, oddly enough. Nice guy
If for no other reason, I would recommend this class for the experience of listening to Professor Danis' personal and professional anecdotes, which relate to the course material. He is a truly unique, interesting and charismatic man.
Great professor, good teaching, great outline. Def recommend
Me Danis is a great, great teacher. His explanations were always extremely clear and interesting. He is the main reason why I will try to enter into law school. I highly recommend this professor.
ONE WORD - AMAZING!!! THIS PROF IS THE BEST PROF I HAVE EVER TAKEN AND I WILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN LAW...I NORMALLY DONT INDULGE IN WRITING ABT PROFS ON THIS SITE BUT I HAD TO DO THIS HES JUST THAT GOOD
Me Danis law class was absolutely amazing. So much info but organized and delivered with absolute clarity. Option to follow lectures in class or online was great. He is helpful to prepare exams and gave great study tips. Studying was necessary to get all the info down (lots to learn) but well worth the work. Amazing person to learn from!
Great professor. Knows his stuff. Respectful while still giving honest opinions and insight on court cases. You can go to class or listen to the lectures at home online but you must study your butt off for the midterm and final.
I was somewhat interested in criminal law when i signed up for this online course. After just one semester, it made me seriously consider pursuing a career in law. Marcel Danis is a modest teacher who has a wealth of priceless experience that he shares in engaging videos, complemented by the occasional joke. TAs were very helpful and responsible.
This online course is a complete waste of the time... out of 13 module, the prof actually lectures in only 2 (and then its all about his exploits as a HA lawyer) the TA's grading schemes make no sense...its way too much work for a 200 level... I will never take another poli sci class online (i took family law last term&loved it cause we had a prof)
Even without much professor involvement, how can you not be interested in this stuff. The final exam was extremely straight forward and fairly simple and was only on the last 5 or 6 modules. The midterm wasn't tough either. Take this course if you enjoy this course topic
Great Prof! The course material is not too challenging if you're interested in law and if you do the readings of course. Everything he says in class is summarized in the readings so it helps clarify any questions you may have. Important to study for the exams, but he asks straight forward questions!
Interesting prof, poor course. I would suggest avoiding this one. If you think you are REALLY interested in law, you'll find this course lacking in meaningful content (My high school law course was more profound and engaging). If you are not REALLY keen, you'll find it needlessly detailed and lacking in a coherent overview or orientation.
Don't do it. While the content is very interesting, it requires too much work for a 200 level. And the focus of the grading appears to be how well you can memorize details rather than what you understood of the big picture. Also - the TA"s were a nightmare. Rude and abrupt. Seriously - DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS.
Intro to criminal law. It was a really heavy workload! I complained about it the whole way through but worked really hard and ended up with an A-, although the class average was a D or something. Honestly, the heavy workload is made up for with the CLARITY given. My TA was awesome and Danis' passion is contagious.
really interesting course material, but this midterm (two 1000-word essays to write in 24h) is just plain cruel.
Great class, I learned so much about Thursdays.
AMAZING! If only all profs at Concordia showed the same passion as Maitre Danis does. He is amazing at what he does, and he is very clear and helpful! I wish he thought all the classes at Concordia. His classes do require work. Don't take his classes if all you want is an easy A, without having to do the work.
Great teacher! Explains concepts very well, you are given exactly what you need for the final. Loved his stories and anecdotes... Very interesting class!
For anyone interested in a law career, take Marcel Danis' class!! His lectures are really interesting. Not a particularly difficult class.
Mr. Danis' class is a full years course with a 30% Mid-term and 70% Final. On the final you are required to know about 30 Supreme Court cases, and all the sections that the case deals with. I.E. It is hard. However, if you like law and want to know your rights, TAKE IT. NOT AN EASY COURSE. He podcasts it so you could do it from home. NO TEXTBOOK.
Good online class, it is completely run by T.As. There are 4 10% 1000+ papers and a 60% Final. If you have a good memory, you'll do very good on the final. Almost everyone scored a B and up, however their was also 15 Fs. The textbook will cost you 30$ Mandatory, however, you really never use and don't have to use the textbook at all.
A very interesting online course. There is however a ton of material covered each semester. While the essays are pretty simple, the midterm requires one to study key points from around 7 modules--a surprisingly amount of info to retain. The TAs mark a little on the harsh side and I was frankly a bit disappointed to get an A rather than an A+.
Material was interesting, yet the grading is done by TAs -seem to grade arbitrarily e.g. "didn't give enough details about such and such, so Ill deduct 30%" easy, but the harsh grading ruins it. not worth it as an "easy" elective!
Grading by TAs, which was arbitrary and mine was useless, she frequently gave the wrong information. The course is actually managed by Danis' daughter (who was surprisingly helpful). One week to do each of the discussion questions, then 24 hours to do the final, and the final is is the middle of the week? Makes no sense...
He is just so cute! Material is interesting. Most people I know got a B or B+. Graded by the T.A and they somehow always find a way to deduct points. Still a great class though I learned so much.
AMAZING CLASS!! I'll admit, there is some work to be done, but it is so interesting it really does not feel like you're doing anything. Just keep up with the work and you should be fine. I finished this class with an A and barely applied myself :)
Although I was really looking forward to this course and found the course material interesting, there was simply too much work assigned. The TA's graded way too hard and arbitrarily, and seemed to want you to regurgitate minuscule details in order to provide the answer they wanted. Avoid this course at all costs!
Prof is fine, T.A Andre Rochon has been shooting down my grades for ridiculous details even if the work I have been handing in is excellent quality and the product of many hours of work. I have never worked so hard for an online class and gotten such a low grade for no valid reason. 25% taken off for minor ref style mistakes. Avoid class!
The course material is very interesting and you will learn a lot. The TAs are really harsh graders. I would not recommend this course to anyone. You will put your heart and soul in only to get mediocre marks. The midterm average was 64%! TA's deduct points for the stupidest things. Stay clear unless you want to compromise your GPA.
Prof and all materials are fine and easy to use/understand. My issue here is with the totally incompetent TA's. If you hand in an A paper they will arbitrarily grade it lower than you deserve. They generally have no idea what they're talking about and are overall just bad at their jobs. I would've liked to have taken this course in person.
One of the best teachers in Concordia! Mr. Danis knows very well his material, engage with the class in discussions and wants to know your opinion on this or that case. If you want to persue your studies in law you must take him! Only 1 midterm and 1 final, a lot of material but Worth it you`ll learn a lot!
I wouldn't know how Marcel Danis grades or is because this course is completely run by TAs... they will mark your work extremely harshly and give unreasonable marks. I am currently 100% stressed for this online course that is my ELECTIVE and work harder for it than all of my psychology classes... Never have I hated school so much.
The online course hasn't been updated since 2007, ben Laden is still mentioned as if he was alive, there are no mentions of current events like the uprisings of a couple of years ago, ISIS or anything that might be relevant on a course on terrorism... Badly written, often incomprehensible.
Badly written. Material hasn't been updated since 2007 (one module makes a quick update to 2012, but that's it). Mid-term was 2 x 1500 words in 24 hours, which is insane even if it's open book.
WOW! What a class! I have never had to memorize such much material for the final. How on earth do they expect us to memorize 100 pages for the final?!? It's an elective course and it's taking up all my energy and time. The material is super outdated and endless. I wish i had known this earlier i would have never taken this class
I took this class as an elective. My suggestion is when it says use the course content in your essays, use the course content. The professor is looking for your understanding of his notes and expects quotes from those notes. Deviate away from this and your mark will suffer. A lot of reading, some outdated information but overall good experience.
I still haven't done the final yet, but the workload expected to be covered for it is unbelievable! You need to know around 30 criminal cases and God knows how many detailed criminal code sections. I mean the course is really interesting and you learn a lot from a professor who knows best, but there must be something done about the workload!!!!!!!
Lots of memorizing but totally worth it. Took many courses with the Dr. Danis. Great Professor
Amazing professor and extremely interesting/informative class! If you're thinking if applying to law school - this is a must take class!
The course itself is very interesting and thought provoking, but the TAs are the ones grading you, so make sure to clarify anything before an assignment is due. Unfortunately, my TA was not the best, did not respond to my questions properly and my grade suffered because of it. However, I managed to get a decent grade. Not a bad class, not the best.
Super reputable guy around Montreal, a great professor and a professional man. He even gave me advice on how to study for the LSAT.
HE IS AMAZING.... must take him! such an interesting class.
One of the most interesting teachers I have ever had. Would recommend!
you know when sometimes we scroll down and read others comments, there is always a little voice in the back of our head that says "Maybe they're wrong, lazy, or just frustrated". So, we go on and enrol anyway. Well, don't. too much reading. TAs in charge. assignments are confusing. it's an elective that requires aLOT & you'll still get a poor Grade
I am en Econ major and hadn't written an essay in two years. THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING in THE CLASS is to do as you are told, meaning if you should only use material from the lectures, do it! I had to cram for this class because I wasn't organized. If you don't to suffer and stress, take two hours a week and read the material ! KEY IS PLANNING.
I love this class. No weekly homework/assignments. Material ultra clear. All you had to do was attend and spew it back out during exam time. It's a lot, but pure memorization and objectivity which is rare for Poli Sci. The only reason people don't do well is their exam schedule sucked. Lectures are fantastic and he is the nicest guy, loved him.
The material is outdated. There is a lot of reading involved and the grading is harsh. However, the subject is very interesting.
Despite being a bit outdated, the subject matter was quite interesting. But WOW was it a lot of material. The TAs are the ones grading. Read the assignment/exam questions carefully, answer them thoroughly referencing the course material, and you'll get a fine mark. The final was straight-forward.
I took this class as an elective and thought it would be fun taking a organized crime class. For an online class, there is A LOT of reading but it was extremely interesting. Keep up with the readings and you will be fine. The midterm and assignments are open book and he tells you which slides to memorize for the final, NO SURPRISES !
I agree with the person who said the exam schedule was difficult, which was not Prof's fault :( Really interesting class, Prof was a great speaker and I looked forward to class each week. ONLY problem was that the class was graded entirely on 2 exams, which meant that anyone with a schedule problem / just having a bad day was going to be affected
He is more than just a professor. He is a mentor to his students that invests time to ensure they are successful.
