The man was so nice and funny...Quebecois humour! Had "witnesses from the past"(TAs pretending they were prime ministers,etc) and heritage moments. Only complaint was that the readings in the course kit were so stupid and pointless.

Excellent teacher. Approachable, supportive and extremely knowledgable with the ability to impart and inculcate his knowledge and love of Canadian history

He is adorable. Approachable and a good sense of humor. I very much enjoyed this class. He is such a dork that it's cute. Material is easy, the assessment is also fair. GOod class all around.

He's outstanding because he's not burnt out! But he works so hard, I'm afarid the fire will soon go out -should that happen, it will be a true TRAGEDY.

I strongly recommend this class. A kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. Doesn't seem to have that arrogance that usually comes with the title "professor".A wonderful breathe of fresh air. 2500 rocked.

Martel was great. Wonderful sense of humour and excellent lecturing style. He was organized and knew his material well. The only complaint is that there was such much reading! And much of the readings were boring and dry. But he makes up for it.

really engaging prof that is goofy and REAL at the same time. readings weren't bad at all. some weren't too interesting, but the load was definately not heavy.

Many people that take this class do so to fulfill a prerequisite for teaching, like myself...you will not be disappointed! MM knows how to engage with his audience, as well as being completely approachable one-on-one. I highly recommend taking his classes.

Such a sweet man with a lovely sense of humour. Strongly recommend this class. Essays are easy and the exams are GIFTS. the readings are a bit on the heavy sude but you REALLY don't have to read all of it. Just read from the course kit. Cuts the**** in half.

One of the best profs I have ever had! Lectures were interesting, clear & well organized. Readings from text book were long but not needed. Assignements were easy and the exams were a piece of cake so long as you went to the lectures. A very easy course to pass so long as you show up, and Martel's humor makes the lectures go by fast!

Strongly recommended. Easy course and an understanding and soft-hearted professor. Going into this course I thought I would die from boredom (after all it's Canadian history!) but I was set up for a nice surprise. Martel has a wonderful sense of humor and his lectures were incredibly easy to follow. Very engaging and also there when you need him.

Canadian History with Martel is great. I had low expectations coming into the class, but I was very wrong. He is so fun and teaches very well. The essay assignments are good too because they allow students to write on what they are most interested in.

I love prof. Martel. He is so funny and makes his lectures interesting. He often brings in cartoons, articles, paintings, or "witnesses from the past" to better illustrate ideas. I was hestitant to take this class, but now I am so glad I did (it was one of my favourites!).

Excellent class. Attend all the lectures and you will do well. Lectures are easy to understand, clear and well planned. His T.A.'s are incredible. Highly recommended! This professor goes the extra mile to make sure you enjoy the course.

this prof. is so cool, he really tries hard, and his love and knowledge for the subject is obvious. If you dont read you wont do well, none of it is common sense clearly, but the prof is awesome!

AMAZING PROF!! So far, the best York has to offer. Having very low expectations prior to the course, I was pleasantly surprised by Martels approach to teaching a seemingly dry topic. He makes everything crystal clear, the assignments are straigthforward, and the readings are actually very interesting!!Also, the exams are fair, and he prepares you!!

Was an excellent prof. taught very well and had a great course outline. as well his essays were very straight forward with no tricky or sneaky questions in between and exams are a blessing. I aced both exams and both essays. hes a wonderful teacher, highly recommended.

I enjoyed this course. Cool prof and interesting lecture. Tutorials are a hassle but can be fun. I highly recommend HIST 2500 it is an interesting course and easy to get a good mark.

Quite possibly the most amazing prof at York! He "tries to make Canadian history interesting", and I for one think he succeeds! Lectures are a pleasure to listen to and he employs multiple media tools to help teach (his "guest" lecturers are hilarious!). Powerpoint slides are all on the website. Two essays/exams, all easy. TAKE THIS COURSE!!

I had the pleasure of being in Professor Martel?s class for two years. I have to say that h is an incredible teacher. He is intelligent, helpful, HILARIOUS, and an overall awesome teacher. I can't stress enough how funny he is, and his French accent makes his jokes funnier. He is also a very cute I just want to go and hug him everytime he speaks!:)

I Found Proffesor Martel very approachable. When I had problems to due with my essays he was very accomidating. I rarely went to his lectures after the strike just because of the pressure to get so much done in my other classes. I found TA Funke very helpful and a great marker, she really understood my work. Other TA Jason...questionable.

Welcome, welcome! Marcel is my top professor of all time. He is very funny (and cute). I am always cracking up in class, his accent is great. He is always very clear about what he is talking about and I think he must time his lectures (read: DEDICATED) because they are always 100 minutes on the button. All in all a funny, enjoyable class.

Marcel is a great lecturer. his classes are easy to follow and material covered is always made interesting. really easy and makes lectures bearable to sit through. Erica was my TA and she was amazing. she gave great feedback and made tutorials easy for students, even if they didn't do the reading that week.

I took 20th century Canadian history with Martel and it was the only Canadian history course that I have ever taken which I actually learned a lot. His lectures are great, very sensible and caring towards the students and gives straight forward assignments. Show up to class and enjoy, you can also get a decent mark if you don't show up, just read.

Marcel is exceptional in his teaching of the course. He is very understanding of personal situations and provides excellent feedback on assignments. He is very engaging outside the classroom, and you learn new things from him; you would never have thought otherwise. Be sure to read and follow lectures when posted!

Professor Martel is one of the best professors I had my entire undergrad at York. He is kind and passionate about teaching. I took this class summer 2020 and he handled online schooling and zoom in an incredible way. Didn't really lecture, a ton of discussion so you were never really bored if you cared about the topics. Great feedback too!

One of the most kindest professors I have ever had who genuinely cares about his students. Make sure to do the readings because he expects a lot of detail.

I'm only in my first year, but I think Professor Martel is the best Professor at York. He is Kind, Caring, funny, and his lectures are amazing. His classes were so good that I looked forward to attending them every week. Marcel truly cares about educating his students instead of defining them by random tests and boring assignments. TAKE HIS CLASS!!

Clearly understands and cares about the material and prepares well for lectures. Encourages participation and active learning. It is obvious he cares about students and wants to see them succeed. Assignments can be very open ended to the point of being vague and confusing, but he's a really easy grader. I highly recommend and will be taking again.
