A useful course for business majors; Prof is very good, I TOTALLY RECOMMEND; has an accent, but don't to pay attention; intelligent and knowledgeable; enjoyable lectures; you are constantly challenged. DO NOT drop the course before you get the feedback for the SECOND quiz and the SECOND write-up
A must in learning how to approach a complex case, very little accounting content in the classes but heavily required in the exams. It is easy to get a B but with a good group you can get an A.
She is using short videos to illustrate some abstract concepts. First midterm is from the book but second midterm is tough (she says it's like the final). She doesn't post the solutions to the cases, so you'd better come to class and talk about the case, she provides a useful framework to solve the cases. Friendly prof always available to talk.
All right this prof. is a hard marker but if you participate every class and approach her with your concerns it is very possible to get an A. If you do not do work you can easily get a B.
good prof for cases although has an accent. Too tough on exams but very approachable (always available in her office).
When she marks assignments or exams, the marks come out of nowhere, there aren't explanations for them. How many marks you lose varies from one exam to the other. Very subjective. Other than that, she is pretty boring. You should stay for the cases and talk to her often because you will do better that way. The exam was a complete surprise.
The best Prof. at York Atkinson period. Also the nicest person one can come into contact with. She really cares about her job performance and studnets, I wish I had more Profs like her.
a hard marker. with the same level of effort your marks can fluctuate a lot. easy to talk to and responds to emails quickly. answers to cases can be hard to follow at times. can be difficult to know what she expects on an assignment/exam. overall, not too bad. but make sure you work hard
She is the worst professor I have ever had. I guess York was desperate when they hired her. Quizzes are ridiculous and she does not help at all. I do not suggest taking a class with this professor. Save your money and GPA!
she is an unfair marker. It's one thing when a professor says they are a tough marker, and it's another thing to be simply unfair! she doesn't even give part marks... it's basically all or nothing. even if you know EVERYTHING in the chapter, that's not enough. the marks are so spread, weird, unfair. the marking is very subjective.

Today we've just had the second mid term and it we did really well just by paying attention to her announcements in the web page. Do all the recommended exercises and a B it's all yours.
Tough course but very helpful prof. She is very demanding but if you survive the first mid term then you are almost done. o not get scared by her diagnostic quiz.
Tough topic and hard prof, but if you keep up to date with your readings and exercises/cases you can be fine. Pay attention to posted past mid terms and final exams because similar exercises/problems/cases are included.

The best prof I have had at York so far. Any of the other comments that are negative are from poor students. She is a terrific lecturer, has great insights, and has very detailed and fair marking. I would take another course with her any day of the week - and out of interest.
This course was OK. She seems to make things more confusing while lecturing. You are better off reading through the text and learning it all on your own. I would read the text, understand, then come to class and she would mix it all up and make it confusing. Exams are all M/C, not too bad (some tricks). Very professional and answers email quickly.

She was a good prof. Some might not understand her cause of her accent. Suggest going to the lectures cause I found them to be more hopeful than the text. Gave examples in class which came in handy for the tests. All of the tests and final are mulitple choice. Found her to be an easy marker on the assignments which helps your overall grade.
the only good thing about her is that she goes over material and uses a lot of examples in the class however she is VERY unclear. She is an UNFAIR marker.She may email back quickly but when it coms to discussing marks said she would not be changing any marks ! .. marking was very unclear. Do not recommend.
This prof is VERY unclear. You go to her lectures and everything seems easy and clear, then you have the exam and its total different and so much more confusing. The averager was 52!! I dont like her at all, if I could I would switch to another section but she is the only one teaching this course. I dont recommend her at all

The only reason I did ok was bc I took 2500 with Gaber last yr.Even I could've explained things better than her.Exams=confusing mess b/c her wording is so unclear.The asgmts were brutal - unclear & group work in accting is CRUEL bc of how much abilities differ b/w members-I got screwed.She won't answer questions,just says'use logic..not helpful!
She SUX. Her answers always contain lots of errors and very unclear.She replies email very quickly, but not in a good manner.I asked her to review my paper, and she said my answers didn't make sense at all and all the marks are given to the effort. before final I can get a b+,I don't know why she mark final like that and only give me c+ final grade
I thought she was okay, however you cannot just depend on your professor to load you with course information. YOU need to do your work and do the practice questions in order to succeed. YOUR MARK is not dependent on the professor's teaching style. I know some people who studied hard who ended up with A's.
I think Marcela Porporato is a great teacher. I'm quite sure that people who rate her poorly either don't like the subjects she teaches or do not like to study hard. For some people, good teachers are those who simple give an A to everybody and don't bother if someone learns or not.

Extremely rude when contacting her, offers no help in class just zooms through all the slides. Better off staying home and teaching it to yourself. Yes i received a decent grade, but that was simply because I taught the material to myself.
AVOIDDDDDDD!!!!! She is very rude and lack courtesy when it comes to emails. By far the worst prof I have ever had. Very unprofessional and doesn't bell curve even if class average is 36%. I shake my head when I look at this woman. All I can say is good luck if you have her as a prof.
Basically she's nice and approachable, sometimes cute. She's got a thick accent so it's difficult to understand her if you are taking an online course with her. But i still recommend her to you ,she's really a great prof.
This course is not easy especially if you don't have prior experience with accounting. The only way to survive in this course is do the problem sets and past practice exams. the prof has good knowledge of accounting. she has a slightly thick accent, but its not too bothersome. self study is mandatory to do well in this course.
She is the rudest person I have ever met! And she is the worst professor! She did not even remember what she had taught in the lecture! Even though you do the assignment by yourself and using the analysis format she taught in the lecture, she will say "your assignment is plagiarized other university's paper"! Horrible!!! AVOID HER !
She is one of the worse professors in york that i have ever took a course with in adms, her quizzes are near impossible to do with the amount of expectation she demands. Expects them to know everything and her grading criteria is VERY UNCLEAR.
She is a good teacher to teach you some knowledge but something which is always not included in the exam. She is rude especially in the email. She is sensitive and doubt everything. If you want to take this teacher's course, the suggestion is to do everything by yourself, never try to contact with her, because you will be hurt.
Accounting is no walk in the park. You will have to read and study like crazy for this class. There is no bell curve, you really have to do the past exams. The onus is really on you to pass. She is an average prof. He accent is understandable enough and really knows her stuff. The way they set up the course is very structure which is helpful.
I took intermediate accounting before I transferred to York, however due to some reasons I had to take ADMS 2500. I found her lectures were so helpful even I had accounting background before. She explained accounting in a very clear way, sometimes I thought: Why didn't I think this way? If there is chance I would take her course again!
Dr. Porporato is very knowledgeable in accounting. Although she has an accent, it doesn't take away from her lectures. She generally covers the material needed for evaluations. The midterms and exams are cumulative, so sometimes there are questions from other professors that are new. She is helpful when you send questions through email.
Good lecturer. Knowledgeable. Tough. For some reason, all the past exams in recent previous years are doable/simple. This fall 2016 semester was way tougher than the past. The questions asked in the midterms are way difficult than what was asked in the past. The difficulty went from a 7 to a 9;avoid taking the course if Marcela is making the exams.

You have to learn EVERYTHING yourself from excessively researching on google since her lectures were not detailed enough and whoever she stole the lectures from, sound cringey af; which is why I prefer to research the material on my own sometimes. She's very by the book, if you're going to email her for help, lol don't. She'll be helping no one.
The course is an introductory course but she makes it so difficult. Her wording for everything is really unclear and leaves it up to a lot of interpretation. She doesnt care about her students and their future and made the course harder because of COVID-19. Shes really rude when you email her to ask for clarification.
Tests are confusing and strangely worded. Time limits are too short.
Says students did well on 2500 thus concluding it was marked enough to make that stament.. adms department then say if they keep getting emails they'll mark the exams slower... uh wait wasn't it already marked? and why get upset over emails and questions? It's not an entitlement it actual concerns as more portion of the risk is born by students
Horrible!!!! Avoid at all costs!!!! Exams are not anything like the course material being taught. Has no compassion for students. When we bring up concerns she just copy and pastes the same email she sent to everyone else from last semesters. Doubt that she even reads the emails!!
at york j dealt with the worst profs but never graded them bad because i thought it could make them sad. but this prof is a total dotdotdot i hope she finds another job not as a prof because she doesn't deserve it and we deserve better profs as future accountants
Course director for 2500. Exam is extremely difficult and because its online this semester (COVID-19) there were technical difficulties that affected the time restriction and they did nothing to help us. Extremely difficult course and it the recordings posted online are from years ago. Very unprofessional
WORST PROF EVER, UNFAIRLY GRADED
Currently taking 2500 with her and would not recommend to people. Live classes rotate professors weekly, Prerecorded lectures and slides are old and dated, unrealistic time constraints for evaluations. During covid did nothing to accommodate students, copy pasted email responses, lack of clarity, etc. Avoid if you can!!!.

Avoid at all costs, not only her, but the entire accounting department if possible. Screwed us in Test 1; took advantage of us being online due to Covid, and made a way harder exam with fill in the blanks (not multiple choice) and exact answers instead of ranged (in ACCOUNTING which is prone to mistakes) - wish I had more characters to keep going..
you dont need to attend the course because you won't understand anything. quizzes you do weekly have nothing to do with the actual exam and a different prof gives lecture every week, they're literally taking 3 weeks off, i can't believe these people are professors
Made the first midterm 10 times harder than past exams, then says the average is the same, when people in the group chat are saying they got grades around 20 percent. One person even got a 7. Makes you feel hopeless when hey take your grade like a joke while students pay 1k for the course. AVOID AT ALL COST. All this for an introductory course. So

What worries me the most as an accounting major is an unfair treatment I am getting as a student in her class, it being online she did not format the exam correctly.
Marcela is very encouraging and wants her students to do well; but they need to put in the hard work. Lots of easy opportunities to get good marks in the course. I've never seen a course that lets you take quizzes as many times as you want.
so i took this class in fall 2020 amid the covid pandemic. This course was purposely made way harder. This prof said there will be no live lectures, only old lecture videos from 2008! Students had to practically teach every little detail to themselves. No consideration for the fact that we are in a pandemic. Abousltley unacceptable. York fix up.
Very irresponsive in emails. She cannot take constructive criticism and is very arrogant. When you get an response she will either belittle you or copy and paste responses. the exams are very tough with very limited time. She shows no compassion toward students and claims that it is the students fault for not studying enough.
She belittles all the students. when the students said that the midterm was too difficult and unfair, she blamed US for not studying hard enough, even though the test was completely different from other years. She makes mistakes during the lecture and yet expects US the students to get the correct working out during tests....

TERRIBLE, she is so bad at teaching that you have to learn this course all by yourself.
By far the worst prof I have encountered. She is truly the most arrogant person I have ever dealt with. She does not care about her students and wont admit to any of her wrong doings. If a student genuinely is asking for help she will not provide the support and then will blame the student for not working hard enough and getting extra help. Worst.
Unfair grading, does not explain properly.
She's the course director of ADMS 2500. Instead of having one professor teach certain sections she does a weekly rotation of professors that teach all sections, which makes it easier on the teachers and harder on the students. When a student came to her with exam issues, she just copied and pasted a reply sent to a past student to this student.

Horrible department as a whole and horrible prof. Shows no empathy for students especially in the midst of a pandemic. Lies to students and says the government restricts multiple choice online evaluations which is untrue as many other courses have them. Students don't even get their own teacher during their class! Profs alternate between weeks
Lack of responsiveness and compassion for the students during the pandemic was kind of bothersome. When taking the midterm, I honestly felt as if I was being tested more on how quickly I could answer questions as opposed to the actual course content. Make sure to really dedicate a lot study time and do as many practice questions as possible.
The textbook and quizzes she wrote are awful and make no sense whatsoever. Students have to make too many assumptions to figure out what she is asking. Also the textbook she wrote is riddled with spelling mistakes which makes it even worse.

Never seen such a terrible professor. Lectures and assignment instructions are outdated. Exams are designed to make students fail. Marcella if you read this, please re-evaluate your life and learn how to teach. Put effort in teaching your students. If 200k is more of a priority for you than teaching, you are in the wrong place miss.
Her textbook is awful and the problems and quizzes make no sense. She makes everything way more complicated than it needs to be, just for the fun of it to see her students fail. Unfortunately there is no way you can avoid her and her awful teaching if you are a BCOM student.
She forces you to use a textbook that does not provide any aid to the teaching material and is riddled with errors that teach students the wrong concepts. Marcela copies and pastes responses from previous years and does not actively help students learn the course material. She even lied to students saying the Canadian Government banned MCQ online.
The only good review of Marcela is the one from October 22nd 2020. The review is from Marcela herself, writing about herself. What an amazing professor! Highly recommend. The only professor to say that the Canadian Government banned universities from using MCQ on assessments online.
Purposely makes the course way harder than it needs to be. People with grade 12 accounting - dont be fooled, make sure you keep up with the course because Marcela will do anything she can to make things difficult. Her textbook is awful and she should be ashamed of writing it and promoting it each year. Dont buy her textbook!!!!
Avoid taking this prof (and maybe avoid taking accounting courses at YorkU in general) if you care about your grades. She purposely makes an introductory accounting course more difficult than it should be. And the poorly written textbook doesn't do anything to help. Extremely unfair testing standards even though we're in a global pandemic
If you wonder why BComm students at York are not as successful as BComm students at other universities, the main answer is the professors. Extremely unhelpful resources. We are literally set up for failure. The only people who even do well are the ones that failed the course, saved all of the resources, dropped it and re-took it. Very shameful
The questions on the quizzes and exams are always so poorly and vaguely written and they seem to be designed to make the reader more confused. I literally had to guess what the questions wanted. This course and the profs definitely don't set people up on the path of success for an accounting career. I learned more in high school accounting
You really have to work hard and put in a lot of time and effort if you even want to do decent in this course with this prof. Go above and beyond with studying.

This professor gives students connect assignments and quizzes that have absolutely and utterly nothing to do with the material learned in class or material in the textbook. Everyone in the course must do these quizzes and assignments. If this course is not mandatory for you, please avoid it. You'll save yourself. The profs in this house are garbage

This course is a joke. connect quiz and assignments are unnecessarily hard. midterm is not easy but doable. but online quiz and assignment tripple harder than midterm. The quiz and assignemnts are way beyond what you've learned. Do not buy her textbook. just some examples and 10 quizzs for 1 chapter. and every page she put cartoon characters..why??

HORRIBLE PROF AND COURSE. Students had to retake this course 5 times.. no wonder. Most unethical person ever. Forces to buy her own textbook and makes the quizzes at an intermediate level, nothing like what is taught so everyone fails. Shame on York for not firing her after so many terrible reviews. Her income is derived from countless F's 200k...
Speaks very quietly, rambles when teaches but very nice lady
This course is run terribly. The textbook is full of errors and is hard to read and follow, it was written by a non-english speaker or maybe by AI. The recorded lectured have static and background noise, it's impossible to hear the prof. What an awful mess of a course
A very unprofessional professor. She showed great impatience and disrespect when asked questions during the tutorial.
The entire ADMS2500 department is run by accent-heavy non-teachers with absolutely zero understanding of how to run a course to teach students. Recorded lectures are always uploaded weeks after, meaning you're behind all the time as an ONCA student, the exam questions you on things covered for 1 slide 3 weeks ago, and good luck using McGraw-Hill.
She actually insulted me, who is a disabled student. All my other teachers helped me, went smooth and had no problems. First time ever being insulted for being disabled.
Expects students to learn 4 chapters before the first lecture... be serious. Those new to accounting are in for a nightmare with her. I also emailed her about a query for the midterm, and she responded so rudely.. Not a good professor. I got an A coz I did well on the online aspect like quizzes and assignments but her exams are hard.
