The class was better than I thought it would be. The tests aren't that hard and she goes over what's going to be important during the slideshows. It can be boring sometimes (she likes to talk about lizards) but she makes it funny when she can. I'd have her again.
Professor Adams makes Biology less intimidating for non-biology majors. She bases a lot of the grade on assignments to make up for those who don't test well. Tests aren't bad as long as you really knows key terms and concepts. As a person who hates science, I have actually enjoyed this class and recommend it to people who just want the GE credit.
She is a wonderful professor. The tests were pretty hard, and assignments try to help your grade out, but 70% of your grade is the tests. She explains everything well, but the tests are still difficult.
This is the most difficult biology classes i have ever taken. Slides are very term heavy. On average we get 2-3 pages of notes a day with 90% of it being terms. She is very unclear about what to study. She will say "don't memorize this" but will then test on it. She also tests us on material that we never covered and I couldn't find in the book.
The great thing about this class is that all of the test questions come from the lectures, and you don't need to waste time reading the overly complicated book. Study the lecture notes a lot and you'll do great on the tests.
The professor does a good job making class interesting and entertaining. Don't bother with the textbook, she covers all test material during lecture. For tests make sure you know key terms.
Every day just went through power points of mostly terms. In order to get an A you would have to memorize tons of random facts, was never clear what was on the test. On the final exam, 2 people out of 200 got an A, no curve. Extremely easy to get a B, nearly impossible to get an A. Don't bother buying the book, you never use it
The tests were incredibly hard, and I never had any idea what would be on the it. I took notes from the slides, and reading back through them, it was impossible to understand. She made the class much more difficult than it needed to be. Class activities were fun, and rose the grade, but didn't outweigh the difficulty of the tests. Do not recommend.
In my class of 195 people, only 6 received an A. That's less than 3%. This alone should tell you not to take this class.
Professor Adams is a really nice person. She is not that great of a teacher however. All she does is read the powerpoints and sometimes doesn't know what she's talking about. Her tests are impossible and the activities is what keeps your grade up. Hard class. Find someone else.
Best option out there for bio 100. Adams makes biology very approachable and will always meet with you to clarify any difficult concepts. She tells you in class particular concepts that are going to be on the test as she's going over them. Really not a difficult class. Only about 6 good easy assignments. And she's funny. Totally recommend her!
Great teacher great class. Final was super easy! Most tests are really straightforward. She highlights key things that are going to be on the test. She's really helpful and has great class discussions. Assignments were really not difficult and there weren't very many of them. All around awesome class and easy to get an A. Just do the assignments.
Never again will I take a class from Ms. Adams. She's very nice, but is unclear of what will be on the exams and what exactly we need to study . Book reading is not mandatory, she bases everything on the tests from in class discussions. I only went to class half the time, and read the book instead, and barely passed. No study guides either.
Professor Adams is an extremely nice person, but has no idea how to teach Biology. She says "I don't know" to far too many questions and doesn't tell you what to study for tests, which are basically impossible. Don't take this class from her.
She is a fun teacher. She keeps class interesting and the assignments don't take up too much time and aren't hard. Tests are a combination of lecture and textbook info. There's a fun project at the end of the semester and there was going to be a final but she CANCELED THE FINAL!!! Great teacher.
I dont know what everyone else is talking about. Pro Adams is an incredible teacher. Never once did I come close to falling asleep in class ( a rare feat) and her lectures are very discussion based, even for large classes. The tests were a bit hard but all the info is on the slides and in the book. AND THERE IS NO FINAL! at least for now.
I thought that this was such an easy class! Everything she discussed in class was on the test. So if you take good notes you should be set. Also if you go through the book and look over what she talked about in class it has some more in depth things in the book that would be on the test.
Marci is a great professor! Take her class. She is fun and smart. She was very generous to our class. The tests were a little hard but all of the questions are found in the book and in her lectures.
Marci was a good professor. Sometimes tests were a little hard, but questions were always answered either in the book or in lecture.
Dr. Adams is a really fun teacher, to be honest. She's pretty hilarious. I personally had no interest in the content whatsoever, but it was presented clearly. Tests are a killer though. Couldn't even get a B on a single one. The final is great though; create an organism based off Middle Earth! You spend the last couple weeks on that haha
I couldn't stand this class because she wants to brainwash everyone to believe evolution, which is completely against what the Gospel teaches. But she presents the material clearly in class. The tests are hard if you don't study. It was a fairly easy class because of all the assignments and it's easy to get an A on the final project. Pretty easy A.
Marci is such a great professor! I enjoyed going to class. She just went over the stuff covered in the textbook, so I didn't read the textbook unless I had questions. Marci always answered questions when people had them. She is a bit heavy-handed about evolution, but other than that, it was great. We also had a final project instead of a test!
Marci is a great professor! She teaches the concepts well and will work with students to help them get the grade they deserve. The tests aren't too bad and you'll have no problem at all if you go to the study help sessions from the TAs before the tests. I would recommend this class to anyone taking biology.
Marci is a great professor who loves what she does. The class seemed easy with few assignments/labs. She offered extra credit to boost grades, even though we only had 3 exams, and no final (we instead created a creature from Middle Earth). My only complaint is that she writes the tests a day or two before it opens, so I never knew what to study.
Marci is a great teacher who has a passion for the subject. The course moves pretty quickly and you need to make sure you study and know your material for the test which are very tricky. The assignments are graded lightly and the final project is simple and fun. Just make sure you do as much as you can to study for the tests which can be hard.
Marci is the best BIO teacher ever. Go to class to take notes, because the notes are on the tests. SHe grades harsh but its easy material to begin with. Trust her she knows what she is talking about. IMMA MISS HER!
I hated it at the beginning, but it turned out all right. The class is easy, she doesn't give any homework. There was no point in reading the textbook because the text book when very in depth and we didn't. She doesn't have a final, instead she has a project.
She is very willing to help with projects and assignments as well as go over grades. She tries to give students an opportunity to interact and to learn rather than give a boring lecture. Definitely a teacher that is great and I have enjoyed here at BYU.
Entertaining during lectures. Assignments were easy. However tests were hard. In all honesty I would try to get another professor before taking this class from Sis. Adams!!
4 weeks, 3 exams. Hardly ever answers questions. Vapid personality. Very difficult class, even if you love the subject.
Great, funny teacher. Makes biology, a otherwise boring subject, interesting. Tests are hard but the TA's give reviews. Study the reviews and you'll do great. Plenty of assignments to help bring up your test grade. Final exam is replaced with a final project where you get to make a creature from Lord of The Rings. Recommended! Gave us extra credit!
It wasn't until I engaged myself in the course material and e-mailed Marci frequently about questionscomments I had that this course really became interesting. Marci is clearly passionate about the subject, and does a good job at getting students to think opposite to what they're comfortable with. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK! Pay attention to lectures!
She is a fantastic teacher. Always willing to help and asks if anyone has questions. Has a laid back feel. Tests in the beginning of the semester then you work on the final for half the semester. The final was a group project that was fun. yep a FUN final. just pick good partners who will do their part. attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps lots
Don't listen to the people saying that Marci is "super hard". I was nervous to take it bc of the ratings here, turns out she's a GREAT teacher, very straightforward, I don't even like biology but I'm never bored, and she's funny. Honestly it's a very easy A. Don't buy the text book. Plus she's got a feminist flare, which is always a plus :)
I LOVED bio with Professor Adams! She is super funny and I enjoyed her lectures. There is homework given, but it isn't graded very harshly. You do need to study the tests, but they aren't too bad either. I really enjoyed this class!!
Lectures are boring. Power points are really confusing. No comprehensive final. I wouldn't take from her again.
Marci is really funny & her class is enjoyable. My problem was Marci splits her exams in two: half multiple choice and half written response. I would do just fine on multiple choice, like 98%, and then have no idea why I didn't do as well in the written part. The final is a group project. It was a lot of work. I would rather have just taken a test.
Marci is a great person but I found the class structure to be lacking. There are 3 tests (no comprehensive final) & a group project which determine the bulk of your grade. Tests difficult because the lectures differ from textbook dramatically in depth. Textbook HELPS, but not necessary by any means. Lots of random, pointless busy work assignments.
Marci is awesome. She is the best at giving lectures for people who don't care too much about biology and are taking it for requirements. Marci's lectures are easy to follow and she makes them entertaining. She connects dots and makes it all make sense. Also group project instead of final, which is pretty great. Take her class!
She's pretty good at what she does. She understands that she's teaching a GE class, and tries to make it applicable to those who aren't doing Bio. There is a final project instead of a final test. If you like Lord of the Rings you'll love it.
The tests definitely threw me off guard. Make sure you study for them EXTREMELY well by looking over lecture notes and her power points. The final project was fun but don't expect it to boost your grade if you struggled on tests. Easy assignments and fun lectures. I respect her as a person and she took time to learn about all 200ish of us.
Marci is awesome! She gave interesting lectures and engaged the class in discussions about controversial biological topics, all stuff we need to know as the voting public. The final was a group project--not too bad. The tests aren't bad as long as you study the material. I loved Marci! This is the professor to take BIO100 from!!!
Marci is the best! Her lectures cover the basics, and the readings go more in depth. The tests are a little difficult, but definitely doable if you go to class, do the readings, and study. TA reviews are helpful as well. The last couple weeks are a breeze, there's a big group project, but as long as you get in a good group it's not too bad.
The best part about this class is that there is no final, only a group project that is easy and fun! Lectures can be kind of long, but she tried to make them fun. Overall a very great and passionate teacher. Made me interested in Biology because she always applied everything to the real world.
I learned a lot from this class. Prof. Adams had great lectures and it was enjoyable to be in despite my serve dislike of the subject. The tests were hard but going to the TA reviews helped a lot. The Bio100 lab was also a great resource. Just make sure you get a good group for the project at the end of the semester.
Professor Adams is the best Bio100 teacher in teh world. She is SUPER passionate about the subject, but can explain it in layman's terms. She comes to class in Jeans and a t shirt, and doesn't make any fuss about anything. She's bold as well, but cares about getting to know everyone. Take Adams over anyone else!
Great sense of humor, handles lecture classes pretty well, likes to hear comments from everyone.
Bought the textbook but you really don't need to read it if you pay attention during the lecture.
Pretty tough class, especially the exams. However, her lecture slideshows are exactly what you need to do well. Everything else in class is practically graded based on participation. She is very funny and loves what she teaches. She loves making you apply what you learn rather than just know the terms. But she is an awesome teacher
Professor Adams is a great professor. Instead of a final, you have a final group project which is nice. The tests are not too hard, but you better study. I would definitely recommend her class!
Easy class, fun discussions if you have a good class, and don't buy the textbook i opened it maybe once!!
Didn't care for this GE. Marci is personable and nice enough, but her teaching style didn't jive with my learning style. There's a lot of assignments which boost your grade, as well as a final group project, but the three midterms are pretty hard. Most important thing: GO TO THE TA REVIEWS, as many as you can make it to. Those saved me.
Marci makes the class enjoyable and easy to understand. Class is made up of mainly lectures with some hands-on lab time. The powerpoints are online so it's not totally necessary to go to class unless there's a lab that day. Marci really cares about her students and the content, but our final was a GROUP PROJECT. If that's not your thing, avoid.
This class was not that bad. About the same difficulty as a high school bio class. The class is a little project heavy: little projects and the final is a group project. After all the tests are taken and you start the project, don't even bother going to class as her lectures go a little off topic. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
I hate science, but this class was so fun! Marci was super chill and her lectures were very fun. She did not take attendance, and if you read the textbook you don't need to go to class BUT she pretty much only tests on what she lectures on. So going to lecture and not reading is a better bet in my opinion. NO FINAL, but a fun big group project.
She is a great professor. You can buy the book, but she covers everything in class. She is willing to meet with anyone outside of class. She explains things very simply and there are a lot of test helps out there. This class is intended for non-biology majors.
She was a good professor- her lectures were always interesting. I found that reading the book is VITAL (I'd say more so than attending lectures). The final for her class is a group project, so if that's not your thing, steer clear of Marci. Other than that, the assignments are pretty standard, and tests are manageable if you've done the reading.
Okay my dudes, Marci is awesome! The first test is rough, but the other two aren't as bad. And the last few weeks you learn about ecosystems so you can create a creature who would be able to survive in a Lord of the Rings habitat. Best. Final. Ever. Thank you Marci if you ever read this. Go talk to the TAs! & go to reviews & you're gold.
The group project at the end of the semester is so fun!! Marci is funny and a really good teacher. I never once used my textbook, but I think it would be helpful if you missed class, otherwise, don't worry about it. I wouldn't have gotten an A if it weren't for the TA reviews, so find out early which TA you like. (Go to Jonathans, 2017-18)
Marci is a wonderful professor. She really loves biology and knows how to teach it to understand it! She is hilarious and I love going to her lectures! Tests were reasonable. They made you really think and apply what you learned but if you study and go to class and TA reviews you should do fine. Final is a group project.
Marci is a fantastic biology teacher! She understands that not everybody is excited about biology and so she only covers the basics. The lectures are pretty much based on the textbook so if you want to read the textbook too you can but it's not necessary. Her tests are all application based, but if you study and go to TA reviews their pretty easy.
Overall a good class! She posts all her lectures online so you don't need the book or really even need to attend class. Before every test all her TAs do reviews outside of class on everything she covered, and they're really helpful. Marci is also an awesome teacher, would take her again!
Marci is an entertaining prof. Her lectures really didn't do much for me so I stopped going and only went on days we did labs. I read the chapters before the tests and did fine. The final exam is a group project & presentation and I hate group projects but this one was so easy. Kind of picky on grading assignments, but overall easy class and prof.
Marci is awesome. Not the best to get back to you quickly, but she will get back to you. First test was the worst and I thought I hated it. GO TO THE TA'S. They help so much and will help you study for the test. The final is a group project where you create a create that could survive in the Lord of the Rings. Best. Final. Ever. Take from her.
Marci knows what she's doing and loves what she's teaching. She gives such good lectures and explains everything so anyone can understand it. Attendance isn't graded but its a good idea because she's able to explain everything better than the book. Fantastic teacher, and the final isn't an exam, which I'll take any day! Highly recommend!
Definitely not my favorite class. Marci is funny and keeps it as interesting as it can be, but I did not enjoy the several papers/projects throughout the semester. The tests were pretty hard, but I would have rather taken a final exam than work on the final group project for a month at the end. It was just very time-consuming and stressful.
Marci is an incredible teacher! She has a lot of hilarious sarcasm in her lectures and makes class interesting. I didn't think the tests (there were 4) were too hard. They were a lot more logic based than memorization, but some students really struggled with them. The final was amazing because it was a really fun group project that was really easy.
Marci is a fabulous professor. She knows her audience, which means she focuses a lot more on the logical and practical aspects of biology than on details and rote memorization. Her lectures are entertaining and I enjoyed going to them, but if you have the textbook they're nonessential. Tests are very fair. The final is a group project.
Marci was a good teacher. TAs were very helpful at reviews (Tom Sant!). She posts her slides so you don't really need to go to class. Don't buy the book. I used it for the first few chapters and never picked it up again. The TA reviews go over what you need to know and they give practice questions. Final is a group project that wasn't too hard!
I wouldn't recommend taking Bio100 from Marci if you can help it. The tests were ridiculously hard even after I studied manyyy hours for them. She will get back to your emails about a month after you send them. This all being said, the TA lab is what saved me. I highly recommend getting to know the TAs. They will be able to help you tons!!
Marci is great! The homework and few essays were not necessarily easy, but I always got 100%. You do not need the expensive book despite what is said. DO NOT BUY IT. You'll never read it. Go to multiple reviews for the exams. The exams are difficult but fair. The final is easy and it gave me an overall A in the class. Definitely take from her!
Facts: 2-3 tests, final group project, about 10 small assignments. Opinion: You gain more from listening to the lectures than from reading the book. She knows you aren't biology majors and teaches the course accordingly. Advice: Make sure you are invested/interested in your final project. Use the book as a clarifier.
I thought Marci was a wonderful teacher. Science is not usually my thing so I was pretty scared, but it ended up being my favorite class. Marci made it really obvious how much she loved biology, and her lectures were really helpful. I didn't end up using my book very much, because her exams are based much heavier from her lectures.
Easiest class ever. Don't buy the textbook, even though it's "required." Take notes in class, and tests will be fine. Hardly any homework. If you had biology in high school then this is nothing more than review.
Marci is a very reasonable and fun teacher. She cares about Biology, but realizes that most of her students are not Biology majors. She is great at answering questions, and despite the large class size, I feel like she knows who I am and is on my side. Great choice for Bio 100
I took Bio 100 because it was a prerequisite for my major. I don't normally enjoy biology, but this ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Marci is very mindful that many of the people in the class are not biology majors, and teaches accordingly. If you take good notes and study, you will do well on the tests.
Marcella is a tough grader because she really wants you to know your stuff. I really enjoyed taking her class though. She is super helpful, and the TAs are amazing! As long as you don't miss recitation, take notes on the lectures, and study a lot, you should get a good grade in this class. It is hard, but you learn a lot. Also, don't buy the book!
Marci gives the best lectures out of any professor I've had. Her tests are almost completely based on real world application of principles learned in class. I didn't open the textbook once and was totally fine. The Final is a group project, so find some friends!
I enjoyed her as a person and her lectures were interesting. However, the class was very unorganized. The assignments were put together last minute and she was a tough grader. I didn't learn much from lab assignments. The tests in this class were ridiculously hard and had no study guide! She wrote them the week before. Way too hard for a 100 level
Marci really loves her job and cares about her students. She makes lectures and labs interesting. Tests are pretty straightforward if you show up for lectures and TA reviews. The final is a group project broken up into a few parts so it's not all at once. Each student is graded on how much they contribute. Definitely your best option for BIO100
Marci is awesome! I hate Biology, and I didn't despise this class. If you like group projects, the final is a group project on a creature you make up in the Lord of the Rings Universe. The textbook isn't necessary, but if you don't want to go to class, you should read the book.
Marci has been my favorite professor! She makes lectures so funny and interesting, and her class isn't too hard. Instead of a final, you do a group project that's fun. The TA's for her class are also amazing and host so many reviews for the tests. As long as you study for the tests and do the labs, you'll do just fine.
Marci is a great teacher! I was one of the only upperclassmen in the class, but she made attending class fun. I learned a lot from her because she really teaches with passion. She is inspiring. Take this class from Marci!
Overall the lectures were fun but not in depth enough to prepare for the tests. The tests are a series of applied questions that are hard to answer if you aren't very good at biology or miss a lecture/lab day
Marci is such a good help and makes things great! I read the textbook before the test (hard because I stalled and lots to read) and studied her lectures. then I went to the Ta reviews that I could. Her tests are pure knowledge from lectures and the book so study both! she likes to ask applying questions. final is a group project that is fun & easy
Marci was super sweet to her students and very straightforward. She made the class pretty easy, although the tests were pretty hard which ultimately were the things to lower my grade. The final was super nice because it was a group project spread over time. She puts most of her powerpoints online as well which makes it nice if you miss class.
I have always hated biology but I absolutely loved Marci. I learned so much in her class and actually enjoyed it. The class isn't necessarily easy but the TA's are also super great and helpful and overall if you're taking biology at BYU take it from Marci.
Prof Adams was hilarious, fun, and really great. She made an effort to get to know her students, and taught in a clear and concise manner. I loved her lectures. Her tests were kind of hard, but if you studied you usually did fine. There are a lot of labs, and that is most of your out of class work, but it's manageable. Overall, an amazing class.
Marci is the best! she is super funny and makes her lectures entertaining. Her tests are difficult, but as long as you study hard you'll be fine! The labs are fun as well, and you get to know the students in lab pretty well. She inspired me to go into biology as my major. Would definitely take again, and I strongly recommend taking her class.
This class turned out to be a highlight of my week - I love Marci! There's a good amount of work, but it's not bad at all. The textbook is really only helpful to read &review for exams. You can probably get away without it. The best part of the class was definitely Marci. She taught clearly, made us laugh and engaged the whole class. Take from her!
Marci is a great professor and excellent lecture, however I didn't enjoy how the structure of the class was set up. Particularly the tests, which always felt rushed to study for in the review sessions and nobody really seemed to know exactly what to study.
Marci is a super fun professor! She makes the lectures as interesting as possible and gets you involved in a fun way. Her tests I found very easy as long as you memorize a few things, but very manageable. The final is a group project which really isn't hard. It's definitely a general though because the TAs are terrible, but you don't need them much
Whether the class is for a major or to fulfill a GE, Marci is the best. She is dedicated, passionate, and hilarious which make lectures enjoyable. She is very clear about what is required of you, and it's not much. Show up to class, read the book, go to lab, and you'll do just fine. Sciences are not my thing and this is one of my favorite classes!
Marci is so awesome! She's so caring and kind! She bases all tests off of her lectures so you don't even have to read the textbook although it's helpful. Labs were always hard, but if you talk to the TA's and go in during their office hours they're super helpful. The final is a group project which is really fun. Work hard and you'll do just fine.
Marci is the best! I actually studied a lot for the exams and did pretty well. Go to the TA reviews for the exams and you'll be fine. She is super nice and willing to help. There is assigned reading for every class, but she also lectures on everything you need to know. Skimming the chapter before class always helps. Be sure to go every class/lab.
Marci is easily the best professor to take BIO 100 from. She was super nice and her lectures were interesting and applicable. The tests weren't too bad if you attend the TA reviews and the final is a group project which makes things a lot easier. There is a textbook, but I got by just fine without it. Her powerpoints cover everything you need.
MARCI IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR BY FAR!! she is so amazing! loved her. the labs were not hard if you show up to your assigned lab time, but the tests are harder than i thought. the final is a group project! she is amazing and will answer all your questions in depth.
Super easy bio class. Everything we learned, I had learned in my 9th grade Honors biology class. There's a lab every week but those are pretty easy. Tests were easy, make sure you go to a TA review. Fun group project at the end instead of a final. She said we would need the textbook but I never even opened it, too bad I wasted that money.
She is AMAZING!! The lectures are always fascinating and engaging. Tests were hard, be sure to go to TA review sessions. You won't regret taking this class!!
While lectures aren't mandatory, you have to attend your labs without exceptions. I got the textbook for the class, but I only used it when I studied for the tests. She's super blunt and has a sense of humor I really enjoyed. For the final project, it is easier than a test but don't expect it to boost your grade too much. Take bio from Marci!
Marci is funny and gives good lectures. There is a lab every week which is easy if you show up. The tests are difficult, but the TA Reviews are super helpful. I didn't use the textbook once. The final is a group project that is super easy and fun. Definitely take bio from Marci!
Marci is hilarious! She loves teaching and she loves the students she teaches. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field and provides frequent, real life experiences to illustrate concepts. The final is a group project where you create an organism that lives in the world of Lord of the Rings. Lectures are not mandatory but you really should go!
nice person but terrible teacher with little regard for students needs
Marci is a great professor and gives great lectures. This is a hard class if bio isnt your thing; she definitely makes your work for your grade.
Marci's awesome, really enjoyed listening to her lectures even though I'm not a big biology kinda guy. The class was easy enough and TAs are willing to help you with anything. What I do like about Marci is that she uses a lot of application. There's a lot of terms that make it feel like high school bio but there's a handful of times it gets real.
Application based, educational. Grade consists of 3 tests, a final project instead of a final, and weekly labs/assignments. They aren't too bad, but there's pressure to get them all right. Some TAs are better than others. Tests come up quickly, but there are good TA reviews. She'll work w/you to improve in the future but doesn't give in to beggars.
I managed to do okay in her Bio 100 class without attending many lectures. Also you don't need to get the textbook at the beginning of the year. She's a good professor and likes what she does.
This class was one of my favorites mostly because of the class discord; the support from the other people in class was really great. It was definitely challenging, and the fact that the TAs didn't know what was on the exams felt like an unnecessary challenge. I learned a lot and enjoyed the class, but sometimes the labs were confusingly worded.
I'm surprised at her good rating. Marci's lectures were boring and full of gross photos. She was consistently rude and bitter. The TAs weren't great. The weekly labs didn't make sense and her exams were TERRIBLY written. She didn't test us on what we learned and I never knew what was expected. This class is just hoop-jumping while blindfolded.
Overall a good teacher and class but it was her way or the high way. The final was just a group project which was really nice since her tests were hard. She loves and requires a lot of participation and wants to know your opinion.
I felt like Professor Adams has a very strong personality. She was rude and always seemed to be in a bad mood in her lectures. Maybe this was just because it was online, but it made it difficult to want to log onto the zoom class. The tests were difficult, even if you do the reading and go to lecture and labs. The final project was fun though.
Too many written tests?
Marci ruined Biology for me. Not because the concepts are hard; they were exactly the same as when I learned them in 9th grade. Your grade is based on labs and exams, both of which are graded more harshly than any other class I have taken in my life. She comes off as condescending. Do yourself a favor and fill the GE requirement from anyone else.
Prof. Adams is a nice person but a bad teacher. The way she teaches is very sporadic and all over the place, which lead me to be very confused about even basic concepts. She does not link concepts together well at all and I found myself desperately writing down everything she said just to keep up without actually understanding it at all.
Marci was super nice and the class wasnt too bad. The test were a little difficult but as long as you attended lectures you will be fine. All the material comes from her lecture slides. The final was a group project which was a lot better than a final exam. I would definitely take this class from her again!
Marci was pretty rude and rarely took her students into consideration. Her lectures were confusing and all over the place and I rarely learned anything during class time. I had to study for hours and watch videos like the amoeba sisters to even remotely understand anything. If you are good at bio already you'll be fine, otherwise you will struggle.
I really don't understand why Marci has so many good ratings. She did not show a desire to see her students succeed. Assignments & written tests are graded way too harshly, it's way too hard to get an A in this class. Don't be fooled by the 5 stars, do more research on other professors.
This is definitely a lecture heavy class. Marci is really smart and is a great professor, but just be ready for hours of taking down notes as fast as you can. When it came to the exams, there are no study guides. And the TAs aren't allowed to know what is on the test. So studying is a shot in the dark. Learned a lot, but wish I had a diff professor
Not the end of the world to take it from Marci, but if you can get into someone else's class I would. Lectures were interesting enough but very surface level, and did very little to prepare you for the tests which were HARD. If you have a good TA it's a lot better, and go to TA office hours if you're struggling.
I really liked taking bio from Marci. It's not a hard class, you have to work of course but it's easy stuff, especially if you have a good TA for labs. she's definitely accessible outside of class and cares about her students. she seems really strict but it's not bad. she's pretty reasonable. lectures weren't super boring and she knows her stuff
I absolutely loved taking from Marci. Her assignments and tests are aimed at understanding and learning rather than memorization and regurgitation, so don't take from her if you're not all about that. If you need help (especially because her tests are crazy difficult), go to the Bio TA lab in the LSB, it's really helpful for reinforcing concepts.
Marci's class was unorganized, and I honestly had to teach most concepts to myself with YouTube because she would spend most of class time talking about irrelevant stuff. In an attempt to be funny, she was often rude. I didn't feel like she actually knew much about bio to answer our questions. Group project was alright. Tests also felt irrelevant.
Lectures suck, labs teach you nothing. But if you want a low work class this is it, only one small assignment every week. Get ready to cram before the test though as you have to teach yourself everything. TA review sessions help. Final project instead of final and it is an easy decent grade, so make friends in the class before the group formation
Dont let the good reviews fool you. She has no interest for students success, and is passive aggressive and rude if you email her with concerns or questions. Also, the tests are insanely hard (even the TA said that it was way too much for a BIO 100 class). The only hw is labs and a project, so if youre a really good test taker, you may be fine.
She will say that if you miss the lectures you will fail Thats a lie Dont waste your time studying the textbook Her tests are all application based She is very political and makes comments that are politically charged Shes not very accepting of opposing opinions Make friends early so you have people group with at the end AMEOBA SISTERS SAVE LIVES
Lectures are interesting and you can tell that she really cares about what she teaches. However, the things you need to know for the labs are not covered in class so you end up googling everything to complete the assignment. Unspecific grader; even the TAs don't know what she's looking for and points get taken off without you knowing why.
I was surprised that her ratings are so high. This class was unnecessarily stressful, lectures were interesting but way too advanced for a Bio 100 class. The tests have very little to do with what is gone over in class, 90% of what I learned for the tests was in TA reviews. She does not believe in extra credit, she is also not very professional.
Marci is not cooperative and very passive aggressive, which is very unprofessional. She does not prepare the class well for what she tests or grades on. She expects the students to know how she wants assignments done without telling them first or giving them much feedback afterwards. Her final project was fun to do but like I said, it's unclear.
Ms. Adams does not care about her students as individuals at all. Her interest was placed more in the difficulty of her class than in the content or helping her students understand. Her tests suited to what she fit that we should have learned but not to what she taught in class and didn't care to inform the class of this. Overall not impressed.
I do not recommend this professor at all. In the middle of the semester I emailed her for help and she sent me back a very rude email, calling "disappointing". If you wish to be respected by a professor, do not take her class. Also if you want to do well, get ready to watch hours of YouTube videos because her lectures make no sense.
Marci is pretty okay. Her powerpoints are kinda confusing and it takes a minute to get used to the disorganization, but it's pretty simple stuff. She doesn't explain it great all the time and the TAs don't really know what they're talking about. It's just in your hands whether or not you get the grade you want. No final just a final group project.
I really liked Marci as a person and enjoyed her lectures, but her tests were written really weird. I was never sure what she was asking of me and I felt like everything that I took notes on that were going to be on the exam weren't on the exam, so I just felt unprepared. There aren't very many assignments, so you have to do well on tests to get A.
Marci is a likable person but her course is disorganized and tests are evidence of that. No one I knew did well on them despite having studied many hours for the tests. The TAs are the least informed TAs I've ever had - they don't know what will be on the test so reviews are not useful. I was left feeling like I retained little course material.
Marci knows what she is talking about when it comes to Biology. Homework for this class isn't bad and if you pay attention to the lectures and take notes you should do well on the tests. She is a fair grader. This wasn't necessarily my favorite class, but is a good option if for your GE credit.
Doesn't care for her students at all. She's rude, passive aggressive, and unprofessional. Whenever I reached out for help I felt very disrespected. Lectures and labs don't teach you anything, get ready to teach yourself. Tests are unnecessarily hard. No one I knew did really well in the class, regardless of excessive studying. Pick a diff professor
I loved this class and Marci! She explained things very clearly and I loved that she focuses on real-life application. If you pay attention in class and study, you'll do fine on the exams even though they're tough. All the homework was easy, and there was only one assignment per week. This class may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it.
Class is just lectures with slides and by themselves aren't bad, she'll actually make them pretty interesting. The issue is that I didn't feel prepared very well for the test. She is very much a my way or the highway professor, she clings to her syllabus ignoring the reality that students have lives outside of her class. but TA reviews were helpful
if you take her just make sure to plan out everything in the class and understand that it's her way or the highway, she will uphold her syllabus, ignoring that students have a life outside of her class. But the lectures were actually good, just make sure you go to the TA reviews before the tests, those are clutch.
Professor Adams is a good teacher. However, I do not like how her tests are structured. Some of the questions are not that related to the lecture and it is extremely hard to prep for her tests because you don't know what to expect. You have memorized a lot for BIO 100. Also, look out for the final group project at the end and get that started early
Lectures are content heavy. Labs are group projects every time. She'll sometimes expect you to have outside knowledge (how to treat an acid burn with household products), but not really on test. Has some gross pictures from search and rescue. Tries to make the class engaging and does a pretty good job for the most part. Take notes
She does good on the lectures, and they're really good forpreparing you for the test. However she gives no room for error. Save a existential crisis (with a signed note) there's no chance for full credit, and each day is a 20% penalty. She's just a rather brutal professor who really seems to care more for the class than for the students.
Funny teacher
Marci is super funny and enjoyable to have as a professor. She makes her lectures and slides easy to understand and applies all the information to real life scenarios. The exams are definitely application based! but once you start studying for application instead of memorization you'll be totally fine. The final project is fun and easy too.
Her lectures are very content heavy and not always very coherent. Marci has a tendency to bring politics into the classroom (e.g. gun violence, CRT, etc...) The most frustrating element of the class, however, was her obvious frustration with Brigham Young University (and the Latter-day Saint Church generally) as an institution.
The first day our TA mentioned this class is hard for a 100 level class. Professor Adams is very "my way or the highway". She reads from her slides and hardly prepares students for the weekly group labs or the tests, that are all application based and unnecessarily difficult. The final is a group project that takes way more time than a regular test
For a 100-level class, this class was so hard. The tests were so confusing and hard. Despite going to TA reviews, I found myself watching the Amoeba Sisters to try and understand anything. I would recommend taking this from someone else unless you feel like you already understand biology.
This class is literally just graded by your labs. You do not need to attend lecture, she posts all of her slides. There are two mid-terms (most people do very poorly on the first one), and the final is a Lord of the Rings themed project. This class was honestly very weird. There is a textbook, but I never read it.
The tests were extremely hard for a BIO 100 class, the only upside of this is you can fail every one of the tests and still get a B (as long as you do all the labs and get good grades on them). Lectures were interesting, but overall this class was just stressful because of how hard the tests are. There are definitely better options for BIO 100.
I really enjoyed professor Adams class! Her classes are for sure lecture heavy but she will always keep the class engaged and use relevant examples, and she really tries to get to know her students. The final project is actually pretty fun-but be prepared to work!
This class was hard for no reason, it was never clear what we would be tested on. TAs were great and helped as much as they could, but lectures were unclear and taking notes barely helped. She also has you buy a textbook and then tells you not to read it because its "too much information". Do not take this class
I think all the bad reviews of this class are from freshmen who have never experienced a challenge before. The tests are pretty easy, all application-based stuff. I never studied for more than an hour for the tests and always got 90 - 95% on them. I like that she wants you to actually learn and apply the information rather than just repeat it.
She claims she wants to teach so that we can apply the material, yet tests on obscure concepts that have no application to life outside of biology. The content she teaches is not hard, just make sure you know all of it. She grades labs pretty strictly. TAs don't agree on how strict grading should be. Class was harder than my physics and calc class.
Easy class. Opt out of the textbook (never read it) and just take notes from lectures. Tests were easy, never studied more than an hour or so for any of them. The TA review slides cover all the questions. Group project at the end was easy and creative. Overall a very chill class. Marci had interesting lectures and the content of the class was cool
Marci is a very complicated person, I think. She can be quite nice and helpful, but also has a sarcastic and downright mean side. She uses a lot of sarcasm and often doesn't take questions seriously or consider students' opinions. This class isn't as hard as other reviews on here state, but Marci as a person is a much bigger factor to consider.
Professor Adams was pretty good. I would take her classes again. I took BIO 100 in the spring so there was a lot of content in a very short amount of time. Tests were a big part of our grade, but so were labs. I averaged a C+/B- on tests and still ended up with a B+ because labs were a big part of the final grade.
This is generally a freshman level class, so I don't get any of the bad reviews. They come from the students who have never had a challenging class, which this is not. The class is easy if you attend lecture and take advantage of TAs and review sessions. Marci is a great professor and has hilarious lectures. 10/10 would take other classes from her.
I really did not like this course. It was poorly organized, we didn't have any quizzes before a test which meant we weren't sure if we had learned anything, the lectures were not very helpful. The TAs are what made this class bearable to me.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT A BIO MAJOR!!! This professor cares more about you getting answers right on the first try than about you actually learning the content of the course. She does not know how to work with students in a kind and respectful manner and is harsh in her feedback and grading. She does not tolerate even the slightest mistake.
Marci is one of the best teachers I have ever had. To be honest I am terrible at biology and I did horrible on most of my tests but the final project really redeems your grade. Her lectures are super funny and entertaining. I would definitely use advantage of the TA's for the test reviews because that is what helped me to at least not get a zero.
Pretty simple class. Lecture and textbook optional. To get an A, show up to recitations and TA review sessions.
Odd humor that can come across as very passive-aggressive. She likes to stir the pot in class discussions She will ask many "guess what I am thinking" questions and go to each hand until they get the answer right. Does not uphold promises or follow through on her word. Too caught up in her Lord the Rings project to help students in other ways
The tests were difficult but she cares about the success of her students and when I wasn't feeling good about my first exam score, she made time to meet with me and went over each and every question with me and I did better on the next exam and even better on the next. She has a fun personality and makes the lectures entertaining and engaging.
I really enjoyed this class. Marci makes her lectures interesting by filling them with real life examples (remember those for the tests) and making you think about how the principles affect your life. Her tests are very much based on application of principles, but it's nothing surprising or unfair. If you pay attention, you should be just fine.
Feels like you're floating in cytoplasm and then you get whacked in the face with an exam. The class is structured so poorly. So underprepared for the exams because there haven't been any checkpoints, quizzes, nothing to test or gauge my knowledge. It's just me, God, the TA's, and youtube at this point. The textbook is headache inducing.
Professor Marci's BIO100 class can be challenging, but engaging lectures and helpful TAs make it manageable. Using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook is key for success. With effort, you can get a solid grade despite the difficulty.
Do not take this class from this professor. In class Marci is confusing, and unkind. Marci often says, "the textbook is out of the scope of this class" then why am I reading it? TA's struggle to know what to teach in the reviews (there is no study guide) and yet these are the only times where I understand any of the content.
I took this class my first semester at BYU, and still tell my friends about it to this day. The exams were insanely hard for a general. Marci was disorganized and did not seem passionate about biology. IMPORTANT: The final project was coming up with a species that could live within a Lord of the Rings realm? Luckily I was in a good group.
Marci is cool but I wouldn't recommend this course, very difficult for a GE. Exams and labs are the only grades you receive and exams are tricky. The TAs don't know what is on the exam so it's hard to study for and the material in the book isn't useful. I am not going into biology and so this rating probably reflects my dislike for the subject.
I loved this class! Lectures are funny and interesting. There's nothing besides 3 tests, the final project, and the labs, but the labs are straightforward yet interesting and can basically be completed entirely during class. Focus is entirely on understanding and applying concepts. Warning if you're squeamish about blood/pictures of injuries.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS EXPECTING AN EASY GE! The class is so unorganized. Labs had bad instructions and half the time you didn't finish during the class and had to take it home. She's the prof who thinks her class is the most important thing in the world. Final group project is Lotr based and just busy work. Textbook not needed at all, save your $
Could never have expected how much I would hate this class. She made things way harder than necessary. Tests were application based. TAs try to be helpful, but Marci makes it so hard for them to come up with reviews because they don't know what we're going to be tested on. The end project is a waste of time. Absolutely do not recommend this class.
One of the TAs in years past leaked one of her exams, and Marci decided to punish every student in the future, giving them little to nothing to help us. The TAs were just as frustrated with her as we were, and could only teach us so much. All she cares about is her final LOTR project. I learned more about LOTR biology than I did ours!
I liked Marci's class, I enjoyed her lectures, she's engaging and encourages participation. Labs weren't too bad, just kinda annoying sometimes. You need to study a lot for her tests, TAs don't get the tests before so their reviews just go over everything. The textbook is not necessary, but I found it helpful when I was studying for tests.
The only homework is done in recitation which is mandatory to attend. Tests are not that hard, just based on her lecture slides. Interesting enough teacher. Do not need to read the textbook at all. Overall an easy GE to take with Marci
Content-wise, this class was as to be expected of any college course. Only when I had to deal with her personally did I have a negative experience. When something came up that would interfere with my final, I immediately emailed her to explain my situation to try to work something out. She emailed me back in an extremely rude & unprofessional way.
Her lectures were a less in-depth version of the textbook, so I found it helpful to read the textbook and go to class. The end of the year project replaces a final exam and is straightforward. The frustrating thing about this class is she didn't provide a rubric, so we weren't sure if we were completing assignments the way she wanted.
It's important to go to class and take notes because the slides can be confusing. The tests are difficult because they are application problems based on the things we learned in class. Ask the TAs for help. The group project and labs can raise the grade. Adams uses sarcastic humor that I think is fun and entertaining, but others might not like it.
Don't take this class online. Professor Adams is lovely and obviously cares about her students, as is apparent in her lectures, but the online class itself feels unfinished and difficult to work with. Ask the professor and TAs for help, because they definitely want to be accessible, but if you take this class, do it in person.
Learned the most from TA reviews. She doesn't teach what you need to know; TAs apologized because she doesn't let them know what's on the test either. We were all in the trenches for this one
The content of this class is what you would expect, not too much, and shouldn't be too difficult to process under normal circumstances. Yet, her tests were incredibly unpredictable, she would go off topic easily during lectures, and the final project felt like irrelevant busy work. The only part I enjoyed was the labs with the TAs.
Marci included real life examples in her lectures which made them more interesting. The tests were hard and very application based. There were no study guides and the test reviews weren't very helpful because she wouldn't let the TA's see the tests at all. The textbook wasn't useful; I used YouTube to help me understand concepts.
She is very passionate about biology and is a good teacher however she is a very tough grader. The tests are excessively difficult and not much study material is provided. I had an 89.5 in the class at the end and she would not round it.
I honestly really liked Marci's class until the final. Her lectures were very good and enjoyable to attend. However, the final was a group project that was horrible, made no sense, and was based off LOTR. She does not take any late work, does not drop any grades, and barely gives extra credit (.13%) I would only take if your schedule forces you to.
This professor was very kind and a great teacher. But I had an 89.7 for half of the semester, and despite receiving full credit on my final project my grade remained unaffected. I asked professor adams to round it and she declined. Just don't like teachers who care more about .3% than they do about your future. not a fan
not a fan of her rounding policies.
Professor Adams was an excellent Professor, she makes it very clear that she will not curve or give extra points at the end of the semester and she holds to that, so don't expect mercy. The A- was my fault for forgetting to turn in one Assingment, the class was interesting and its very doable.
If you came to BYU to have teachers show you how the gospel aligns with science, do NOT take her. She teaches gender is a spectrum, and you can tell she has been indoctrinated by the woke world. I could have gone to UVU to get that.
The bad reviews are probably from freshman that don't know how to study. Do the readings and show up to the lectures to make sure you know the info and you'll get a good grade. She's really funny and clearly cares for her students. She doesn't give out test study guides, but after exam 1 (of 3) you learn her test style so exam 2 and 3 are easy.
Professor Adams' tests are absolutely cheeks. This class is not a straight forward science class where you learn the facts and then memorize them, but rather you have to apply them in extremely specific scenarios as a doctor in an emergency room. If you like that learning then she is for you, but I didn't like that for a GE class.
She spoke clearly about the concepts and her class was enjoyable. The tests aren't too bad if you review the subjects from class. There was a group project for the final, but it was fun and not too bad. Overall, a nice teacher for a general class.
Marci was amazing! Her tests are difficult, but if you study and use the TAs and reviews you'll be fine. Marci cares about her students and the subject and her lectures are interesting and engaging. She teaches biology and evolution exactly as it is and doesn't skirt around tackling difficult topics relating to science and religion. Take her class!
No study guides for tests. VERY long online textbook quizzes. Heavy workload for an introductory GE class. It was one of the heaviest classes I have ever had, it was a bunch of workshops and writing assignments. The TAs only do Q&A for reviews or very basic information. Uses honorlock which was the worst to set up and deal with.
Marci is an awesome person but her class is a mess. It's a bio 100 class yet her tests are unnecessarily hard. She seems to take pleasure in the fact that students do poorly on her tests. Her syllabus is extremely unprofessional and frankly rude and condescending. She often brought politcal matters into the classroom.Interesting class but pointless
SAVE YOURSELF! Do not take this professor. I am traumatized, and you will be, too. The tests are all about application. Several questions were medical and somehow she expects you to be able to answer medical questions with limited BIO 100 knowledge. TAs were homies and probably the only reason I didn't fail the class.
Lectures were all over the place. She cares a lot about being able to apply the content, especially on the exams, but does not go over that in her lectures. It felt like we were being tested on things never talked about in class. Assignment are difficult and time consuming. I felt like I gave everything to this class and barely got an A-.
If you've taken any sort of bio class in HS, this should be a piece of cake. Admittedly, her sarcastic syllabus seems rather abrasive, but as a person she is fun and reasonable. Make sure to take good notes on what she says though, the slides aren't always too helpful. Final group project involved creating a creature to live in a specific niche.
This class is unique because Dr. Adams does not just teach you Biology, but prepares you for university level understanding, reading, and writing. She cares a lot about the class and she grades papers very quickly. I enjoyed the material and learned a lot but prepare to do some self studying because that is how the course is designed.
On the first day of class, Professor Adams says it's her goal to make as many people in the class convert to being biology majors, which is ironic because this class killed any interest I had in the subject. Her exams are entirely application-based, which wouldn't be bad if she ever taught how to actually apply anything you learn over the class.
It was fine, if I had tried maybe I would've done better. Shes nice and her lectures are fun and engaging. There is one assignment a week with the TA's who are really nice. A couple tests throughout which if you know the stuff should be easy. I did not lol. Big group project at the end for your final. I liked it overall. Use the TA lab if you need
The class is not a lot of work but the tests are way too hard for a bio 100 class. She doesn't let the TAs see the test before hand so the TAs don't know what to review. The labs are also graded really tough. I checked every question off with my TA and still averaged an 85 on the labs.
Marci is great. She loves biology, and it shows during her lectures. There is no study guide for tests, so make sure you go to the review sessions. Tests have written and multiple choice sections, but they're not awful if you're prepared. You don't really need the textbook because tests are solely based on class lectures. Go to recitations!
Beware of her tests. They are complicated and detailed and test you on random details that she mentioned once in the lecture or found in random places in the book. She is strict and unyielding on how you can turn in assignments on canvas, if you do it in the wrong format, it's an automatic and permanent 0 for the assignment.
Marci is a kind and entertaining lecturer. The class is huge, though, and due dates/assignments can be confusing. How you do in this class is really based on the TAs. The exams are a little difficult. Go to the TA reviews for the exams and be close with your TA.
I've been a 4.0 student my whole life until this class. Marci makes bio much harder than it should be, is unforgiving on grading, and her syllabus basically states if you ask about a grade she'll just dock more points. Unless you love bio or want to waste a lot of extra time studying for a general credit I'd avoid Marci's class at all costs.
She was an alright professor, but I just didn't like her tests at all. They were a bit difficult for being an intro class. The reason why I got an A- is because my TA gave me good grades on my labs and I clutched on the second exam and the last exam. I do agree that a lot of your grade will depend on how your TA grades. Your final is a project
Don't be scared of the ratings or the syllabus like I was, Marci is amazing!!! I loved this class. Her exams are difficult, but not impossible, and have very easy open ended sections. Make sure to go to TA reviews before every test. The final project and recitations are basically participation points, so just put a little effort in.
Marci is a good professor. There are lectures twice a week and a lab once a week. Labs were worth 40% of your grade, tests worth 40%, and a final project worth 20%. If just try your best on the labs you should get 100% on most of them. Make sure to take some good time to study for the tests. The final project is pretty light. Overall, good.
Do not take by her. Good luck if you do
Marci is so sweet! Definitely make sure to study hard, those midterms are pesky, but her lectures are so interesting!
