Supervisor for Phys 100 Lab
He is an awesome teacher, PHD in nuclear physics and was on the Discovery Channel, and he makes physics so entertaining !
Super interesting lectures! And he explains things really well. He is a nice person; he knows the pain/stress of being a student and tries to help out as much as he can. His lectures are engaging! Physics used to be my least fav subject, but thanks to him, I actually enjoy it now :)
Dr. Pavan is hilarious! Class is super entertaining, and he's great at explaining concepts, especially using examples we can relate to (ex. hungover roommates). Easy on the eyes as well. I definitely recommend him (and the course).
He's freaking hilarious! Definitely not a bore in class! :)
Very enthusiastic and interesting teacher :)
THE BEST PROF YOU EVER SEE! i hated physic in high-school, when i took his class i feel in love with physic. physic became part of me i do physic in my head all the time now. Class average was 77.
Best Prof in the world! Completely understands the mindset of students, has a "low stress" policy, and is absolutely hilarious! And not to mention he's pretty easy on the eyes... :)
Dr. Pavan is the best physics prof. you will ever have. I hated physics in high school so I didn't take Phys12. I'm so glad I didn't because I got to be in Pavan's PHYS 100 class. He really relates to freshman students and is great at explaining concepts. Great in class too, with a sense of humour. Would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Pavan is the best prof I've had so far. He is super funny and makes learning physics interesting, exciting, and easy. Refuses to use a microphone. He really cares about each and every student's success and imposes his office hours on you. Exams were more than reasonable and only tested on topics covered in-class. Loved this guy :">
Apparently this course is the "easiest" course at UBC, but I personally found Phys 100 to be harder than any other 1st year science courses! Dr. Pavan is a good prof but honestly, be prepared to understand the concepts and do a lot of work for this course as the midterms and exams always have questions that are COMPLETELY crazy and unpredictable.
super hilarious and fun Prof! He's enthusiastic and engaging. He Also relates to how it feels TO bea first year. he taught well and is dear. There is quite a bit of "Work"but it's mainly for your own understanding. His exams are fair but not easy-There were some hard questions.A great prof-take this course with him if you can
Super funny and entertaining in lecture! Really helpful during office hours too.
My favourite class for my least liked subject. Interesting prof with a great atitude, lectures and tries his best to make sure we all pass.
One of the best lecturers you'll ever have. If youre debating which prof to take for your course, choose him.
Enthusiastic in class, but a very intense man in office hours. A self-teaching class, was very difficult to understand him as a visual learner. Marks often returned late. A nuisance course overall, do not recommend.
Amazing physics prof! He is hilarious and gives great examples. Explains concepts thoroughly. Material pretty easy. Very enthusiastic (prefers to yell instead of using mic) so lectures are not boring. He interacts with students and the class is very engaging- not just him reading off slides. Great teaching style and personality. Highly recommend.
First year is hard, yes, and I hated most of my classes. But, Marcello's class is the only class I would get up in the morning and not dread to go to. He is not only hilarious, but an all around GREAT professor who loves to teach and loves physics and makes you love it too. He is helpful which balances out how DIFFICULT the exams and quizzes are.
Phys100 is a pain, but if you have to take it, I would 100% recommend Dr. Pavan. He's a great teacher, funny and cares about his students. Course material is easy but tests are not, so be careful!! This class is a lot of work (final project, lab book, hw, online tests, labs), but having such a great prof makes it more manageable.
Awesome Prof. While the course is kinda heavy ( Lab final project, eLabs, Online quizzes, hw, etc), the prof does an amazing job of explaining the concepts and making the subject much more fun. He is also hilarious and his lectures are never boring. Definitely recommend him.
Awesome professor, he cares a lot about his students. He makes physics much more interesting course.
PHYS 100 is tough, but Dr. Pavan made me LOVE physics. He is not only hilarious and a very engaging lecturer, but an inspirational, caring, and knowledgable prof who fully understands the challenges of being a university student. So sad he doesn't teach any other courses at UBC, otherwise I would major in physics just to be in his class again!
** PHYS100 has lots of labs, so try to find a good partner from the get-go for your final lab project. ** Prof Pavan is funny, well-spoken / projection, and genuinely wants everyone to pass and succeed PHYS100. Lectures were fun, even though physics is hard for me. Absolutely take Physics with him - you will be awake the entire time!
I cannot stress how incredibly amazing Pavan is. He cares so much about his students and goes beyond the call of duty to make sure concepts are effectively taught in lecture. 11/10 would take again. I also believe his section had the highest class average for both the midterm and final :D
Compare to one other prof, Pavan is doing amazing and trying to make everyone pass!
Absolutely HILARIOUS in lectures. Physics can be pretty boring, but he tries his best to make it fun. He does upload all his slides, but you should still go to the lectures since he has pop quizzes every class. You have weekly reading and decently long homework assignments (however they are mostly multiple choice).
Such an awesome prof! He makes the lectures really fun, and he always has you on your toes (not a class you'd fall asleep in even if you tried). He genuinely wants all his students to do well on the midterm and final, and goes above and beyond to make sure that happens.
Pavan was a very engaging professor for such a large lecture hall, but I felt that he often approached problems in a more complicated manner than necessary. There is a decent amount of work through online assignments and tutorials, but it all helps to solidify concepts. He kept lectures interesting for what I personally found to be a dry course.
Dr. Pavan is a fantastic lecturer, and inspirational person. His lectures were highly entertaining, and a pleasure to go to. He tries to make himself available after lectures as much as he can, and tries his absolute best to help his students succeed. Hes a hilarious guy, and you definitely will not regret having him as your prof.
Professor Pavan made me actually want to go to class. I am not a physics fanatic, in fact, I hate physics but he made it entertaining. Thank you for making a course that I thought would be boring into an entertaining lecture.
Definitely one of the best physics prof. Hes kinda funny and tries to do his best to help you pass the course. If you do the homework and pay attention youll be fine. I hate physics and it was decent. They even let you bring in 4 (!!) double sided cheat sheets of paper into the final exam!
His lectures are okay - he gives time to work through the worksheets and sometimes does pretty funny demonstrations. He also seems to care about his students. However, he can come off as rude when answering questions and isn't as accessible outside of lecture. I also found it unfair that his clicker quizzes were partially based on correct answer.
Physics is my least favourite science but Marcello was my absolute favourite first-year prof. His lectures are super engaging and clear, he answers questions thoroughly, and genuinely cares about his students. His exams were also exactly as expected, apart from the final (which was scaled really high). I almost cried during his last lecture :(.
Such a fun class. Fantastic, charismatic professor. He really tries to get you interested in the content and his lectures are never boring. This guy made me love physics. He's just so cool. The TAs for the course are also great. Beware, the final exam is much more difficult than the homework/midterm.
I'm was and am still not a fan of physics but Dr. Pavan made this class as enjoyable as he could. His lectures were easy to understand and humorous, and he would go around the hall answering questions during the time he allotted for answering the practice questions. He may not be as famous as Jared Stang but he's also an amazing physics prof!
I'm not really sure how to describe why I dislike Prof. Pavan. His lectures were often confusing, which sometimes seemed purposeful, and the assigned readings and homework did little to help that.
Dr. Pavan somehow managed to communicate Physics in a way that makes sense to even someone like me with no Physics background. He's hilarious -- I found myself laughing through his lectures. Also, just a very nice human who genuinely cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Take his class. Nice bonus: he gives valuable study/exam tips.
I think that he's a caring person (eg: not wanting a single student to fail Phys 100). In addition: he engages students in lecture (eg: quizzes every class to review material), explains concepts clearly, and provides great tips (for studying and life in general). He's big on academic integrity and fostered an overall good experience in Phys 100.
I personally think Pavan is an underrated prof. Despite that he only teaches Phys 100, he knows what he is doing and gives us many great tips for studying(every lecture, he constantly reminded students review courses as early as possible before the exam). I really wish he taught more physics classes. Plus, his little jokes always made me laugh.
Dr. Pavan made me actually enjoy physics for the first time in my life, I always hated it in high school. His lectures cover the exact things you need to know for exams and he always throws in some jokes. Clearly very passionate about making sure his students don't fail and very helpful in office hours.
Professor Pavan was real gem, I could tell he cared a lot about the students, and tried to interact with them as much as possible. His lectures were laid out really well, and had a good amount of participation. Very thorough in his office hours, if you have questions, they will definitely get answered there. Great guy, and worked the tech well
Prof Marcello's lectures are easy to understand and gives lots of opportunities for participation through clicker questions. If you do all the practice homework this should be an easy A.
The class itself if pretty easy to keep up with as long as you do the required weekly readings and homeworks. In the lectures, he gives ample opportunity for us to interact with him and is always open to questions, even to the ones after classes. Very caring of students. Also pretty hilarious and has a tendency to count in different languages.
One of the great things about this class was that we were allowed to retake our biweekly tests. Other than that, if you havent had prior exposure to physics/are a natural, get ready to pretty much learn without support. Extremely unavailable. He told us to email him if we were really struggling, so I did, and no response.
Not a good prof at all. He was very bad at explaining things, and lectures were pretty much a waste of time. Not much support or accessibility for students, and expectations were very unclear. If you have previous physics experience, the class is pretty easy, but regardless of your skill level, you're learning on your own.
Pavan is a great prof, actually made high school physics digestible. His lectures were absolutely hilarious and he would come all the way to the back of the class to say hi. Homework is a must and practice practice practice, but he is always there to help. Love his earrings too
if you have a weak physics background, be prepared to put in a lot of work on your own, particularly towards the beginning of the term. Go to class and take notes on concepts and concept application rather than the problems he does.
pavan taught physics 100 really well. but then again, its a super easy course. show up to the lectures, listen to what he says and you'll do fine
Dr. Pavan is lovely. His analogies were always helpful, and he made me laugh quite a few times. My lecture was in the morning, yet I was always looking forward to it. As long as you do all the homework, and keep up with the reading, you shouldn't have any issues. You also get the chance to redo each test, which is always a plus.
He is suuuper funny, at times his humour gets off topic but it honestly helped me stay engaged, my personal favourite was"If you're cold then just get a tall boyfriend". The entire grading team was considerate when it came to ambiguous wording in exams. The only issue was that time was wasted due to technical difficulties. Every. Single. Class.
Super nice dude, cares about his students and wants everyone to do well.
He genuinely wants all students to do well, and is willing to help everyone. Lectures explain the concepts very well, while making heavy use of jokes that make them entertaining at the same time.
Funny guy who does a good job of explaining physics
Very funny & caring prof. He knows exactly why you are in phys 100 specifically and caters the class towards that. Wants everyone to pass and is extremely accessible, stayed up until like 11:30 pm on zoom before the final helping students
I very much enjoyed having Pavan as my PHYS 100 Professor. Coming into this class I did not like physics one bit, but now I find it quite interesting. He is very conscious of the fact that most people in this class did not chose to be there, and he does everything he can to make the course as interesting and clear as possible.
Such a hilarious prof! I've never been good at physics but he explains concepts very well and his jokes always make me pay attention in class. Just sometimes goes a little fast on the calculations. Very caring and accessible during office hours and responsive to emails. Class content is pretty heavy though imo, and the final was hard.
Dr. Pavan is like magic, I have always struggled greatly in physics but his ways of explaining and just teaching in his lectures made everything make sense! Outside of the lectures, he is super accessible and the zoom meeting he held before the final, going over the practice final was very helpful. Extremely considerate prof and also really funny
Dr. Pavan is an awesome prof. His lectures are always engaging and entertaining, and he made sure to use plenty of analogies and examples to break down tough topics. Overall, he made physics much more interesting. He also made sure to incorporate practice for older topics in his clicker questions which was nice so you wouldn't forget.
He does not respond to emails whatsoever. His lecture notes are all over the place and not organized. (take phys100 with Litinskaya)
Really engaging, well organized lectures, though sometimes we would fall behind the other sections as he tends to over-explain some concepts. Very kind and helpful with questions, he really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. That being said, the final was unreasonably difficult.
If this man taught every physics class I would become a physics major. He was so entertaining. He made everything make sense and did demonstrations so it always made more sense. He walks around when solving problems and gives great explanations
Dr. Pavan is incredible! He makes everything very easy to understand. Attend lectures and pay attention and do the work and everything will go smoothly. He's very approachable and really wants you to do well. Amazing professor!
really good at teaching and always willing to help! I suck at physics but he made it easy!
Dr. Pavan is a great professor. His lectures are quite engaging and he provides a lot of resources.
A great professor; occasional sassiness keeps lectures engaging but does not take away from his great explanations. Lots of examples similar to exams covered during lecture, lots of practice materials given and opportunities for easy marks. Go to class and you'll have a great and easy time in this course!
Amazing prof. Loves his job and is good at it. I hated physics in high school and I still do but I still somehow managed to get a 93 in his class. He's just so sweet and funny it makes it hard to mess up.
this guy is my opp lowkey
Marcello is a really great and fun professor. Course is pretty straightforward if you complete the homework and attend lectures. Only thing to say is that his handwriting is kinda messy and hard to see
Dr. Pavan is a great professor who helped me get interested in physics after not taking it in high school. He is very enthusiastic, engaging, and caring as he wants all of his students to succeed and is willing to provide support during office hours. He is a great lecturer with engaging and funny slides, would take again.
enthusiastic and nice guy. prepared us well for what kind of questions would be on the tests. one of those profs who makes an effort to be funny (and he is pretty funny). good prof overall!!
Dr. Pavan is easily the most engaging lecturer I've ever had, which is important if your brain is as dopamine-addicted as mine. He genuinely seems like he wants every student to succeed, and stresses the importance of coming to class and studying/reviewing. In lectures, you will do lots of examples (iClickers), followed by thorough explanations.
Limited office hours, fun lectures, good at explaining content
"Do your homework, come to class, and you will be fine." -- Dr.Pavan.
He's engaging and funny and you can tell he cares about his job and wants students to succeed! His lectures are pretty good, he does lots of example questions in class which is helpful. It's not a difficult course overall if you do all the homework and go to class! His handwriting is a messy sometimes but it's not a big problem.
I understand 2025 was his first time teaching 131, but many concepts were explained unclearly. He comes off very aggressive when answering questions, but he means well. Unbearably messy notes and always delays posting slides by a week (intentional). GO TO LECTURES because he doesn't record them (for good reason, honestly). He's quite funny though
Very funny and caring lecturer. He understands students' struggles and does his best to provide as much help as he can. However, he is very anti-skipping lectures, so the iClickers count for participation, and he often won't post slides on Canvas to incentivize students to come to lecture (but you can access other profs' slides). Pavan is the GOAT.
I can tell he definitely wants his students to do well, and will even go out of his way to email anyone that hasn't been doing well in the course. Lecture pace is perfect, and he finds many ways to engage students and is overall a funny and helpful person. Definitely recommend him, especially for PHYS 100. He explains hard concepts very well.
he's nice and humorous, but i had no previous physics experience so i had to self teach a lot. he also doesn't record lectures so make sure you go to class.
this guy has adhd
Marcello Pavan was a good prof. He was funny and gave good lectures. He did his best to give examples which would stick and very obviously wanted to see his students be successful. He gave good assistance and applicable resources. He was sometimes a bit passive/sarcastic, but I think that is just his humour so once you get past that he is great.
I really enjoyed Dr. Pavan's class. He put in an effort to make class engaging and fun by having demonstrations and going through any and all questions asked. He was never condescending and I feel like he really cared about having his students succeed.
I LOVE THIS MAN! He's so great, take his class if you get the chance. I would wake up and look forward to his lectures because he is so funny and entertaining. He also walks around to help with worksheets during lecture and asked students what office hours time worked best. He is the best prof I've had, you're lucky if you get to take his class.
I didn't come into this course confident in physics, but the way he taught really helped me figure out how to study and actually understand the material. He's a genuinely caring professor and clearly wants his students to succeed.
Professor Pavan was amazing. His lectures are easy to follow and he shows genuine care for students. Went to his office hour and he was easy to approach. I would 100% take this lecture again. Great professor!
