This is his first year, he's cool. Calc 3 is hard though :(
One of my favorites, even though he's new. Has a sense of humor and always willing to explain something again if you ask. He tries to get to known his students, he actually bothers to learn names which is appreciated.
Rainho is pretty chill. He's sort of new so he bases his notes off of the textbook. His tests' difficulty are reasonable and he is very approachable for help. Rest assured, his first language is English and he has rather nice handwriting.
I am totally a Humanities student and math was never my thing, but Marco's class was one of my favorites at Northeastern. He not only speaks English as his first language (rare, I know) but is very clear in his lessons, friendly, and helpful. A great sense of humor and a serious dedication to knowing his students sealed the deal for a great class.
Really chill teacher, has a great sense of humor and explains material well. Goes a bit fast though so you have to be attentive, took him only one week to know the name of each student in class. He is really helpful if you need extra help and quizzes are not too hard.
I love him! He has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and you'll hear him say "probs" and "funsies." The class itself takes a lot of effort, but he makes the class more entertaining. He doesn't like the book and complains that he has to follow it, but I like his methods better. Overall, awesome teacher!
Great math teacher overall! Funny, approachable, intelligent, and clear.
Very good overall, though in first few weeks he definitely rushed the material and didn't pay much attention to students. Later in the course this stopped, and he was fine.
The digital textbooks (by Massey) are extremely confusing. Rainho bases his lectures off the books, but explains the material in his own clear way. I've never been exceptional at calculus but I really enjoyed his class. He keeps it fun. He provides homework but doesn't require it, so I guess that's nice if calc comes easy to you (unlike me!)
Professor Marco Rainho or just Marco is an amazing professor. For someone who had to retake Calc 3, I'd say he made everything understandable and had analogies that made this class bearable. He is always helpful at office hours and makes sure you understand the content. Scaling your final grade is not his forte, You get what you earn :)
While everyone I knew in other classes struggled all year, my class had very little trouble. Everything he explained made perfect sense and was very interesting and thus easy to remember and reapply. Taking good notes is extremely helpful and he makes it very easy, I just wrote down what he wrote on the board and I had everything I needed later.
Awesome Prof. Definitely recommended.
Great teacher but dont except any curve from him as the other sessions have two already and we have none
He is a great professor, who cares about his students and is helpful in office hours and by email.
It;s a really easy class and he is a super chill professor. He gave us extra credit because he accidentally put something on our midterm that he said wouldn't be there.
Marco is a very clear in his lectures and doesn't waste time asking his students to solve problems individually in class. He moves quickly and spends the majority of the time in the class with his back turned writing on the black board, so be prepared to take a lot of notes. He also often will let you out of class early!
This professor is amazing! I was hard for me to sometimes follow him in class because he has a tendency to go through his lectures fast (usually finishing class before the class time is over yet still covering everything we need to know) but the notes he writes on the board make up for it 100% I even had friends from other classes borrow my notes!
Definitely tough to understand. He seemed to teach specifically for people who had taken Calc BC in high school and this was just a review for them. Pretty difficult to understand if this will be new material for you. Little to no in class review and less than helpful in preparing for classes. Just saying, there are a ton of better professors
Best professor in the Math Department. Made the heavy material in Calculus 2 very manageable and understandable. He goes over a lot of examples of things that are confusing. Quizzes need studying but are the same as class examples.
While I hate math in general, this class is okay and Marco made it bearable. I had a few personal issues throughout the semester and he was incredibly understanding and caring. As a professor, he tends to overcomplicate things and I had to rely heavily on the textbook. As long as you come to class, do the homework and study, you should get an A.
Very quick lecturer. If you can keep up, you're good but if you can't you are screwed. Very understanding if you have personal problems and need to miss class but TOUGH grader. Overall for a person who is really bad at math (like me) it was a difficult class and intense.
He's a really laid back and nice guy. Weekly quizzes can be a bit irritating especially if you miss a class. Theres no homework, but he does provide problem sets that he recommends you do ... so you know do them. Biggest down- the final is 40% of your grade, Biggest plus-the textbook is $14.95, i'll repeat $14.95
Such a good teacher! His lectures are so clear and to the point. If you show up and take notes, you'll get an A. He's easily available outside of class (I asked him for extra help before the final, and he literally answered my 10 questions in 30 minutes. Very efficient and easy to understand.
Professor Rainho is one of the best math teachers that I've ever had. His lectures were very clear and to the point. He also helps you by going through many example problems. If you take notes and go to every lecture, you'll get a very good grade.
If you go to class, do the practice problems, and do well on the quizzes (nine quizzes, best seven are counted), you'll do very well in class! Professor Rainho describes the material very well and is an extremely personable professor. That being said, it's not a SUPER easy A, but if you're a good student, you'll be fine.
he's a really great lecturer. if you go to class you'll get an A. makes everything really really easy to understand and actually cares about his students. it's not an easy A but if you go to class it definitely will be.
Summer 1. V accelerated- Marco also just goes fast. Class ended early everyday. V helpful during offices hrs. If u're like me & haven't taken calc in a while- this class is kinda hard. Bad: no notes allowed on quizzes or exams. Grade is entirely test based 2 exams 20% each, 7 quizzes (drops 2) 20%, final 40%. Wish he posted notes online.
Super nice professor and makes everything easy to understand.
He goes very fast, and I found it very difficult.
He is an amazing professor. Anytime he is needed out of class, he will be there. Will help you if you do not understand, even if it interrupts the class. Weekly quizzes but they definitely help your grade if you pay attention of the material in class.
Professor Rainho is the worst professor I've had at NU. He is too fast in class, makes students feel stupid for asking questions, and gave no accommodations when we went and began taking the class online due to COVID. He was unkind to me when I asked questions, I had to teach myself based solely on the textbook. His questions do not match to book.
He doesn't know how technology works. On the first day, he couldn't figure out how to share his screen, so he wrote everything on the board, but it was too small to see. He doesn't know how to use Canvas either, it's a mess. He tried combatting cheating with harder, shorter tests, but the other Calc 2 classes are way easier. Just take that.
His teaching style is very clear and straight to the point! He takes the time to explain concepts and uses/solves example questions. As long as you take notes and do the practice questions, you will be ok!
Professor Rainho went quickly during lectures, but he teaches everything you need to know. He's also very clear about what you need to do in order to score well on quizzes and exams. If you listen in class and do the homework, you'll be golden.
This class was so easy. You spend so much time going over everything and he is actually great about breaking down the math so that it makes sense in the real world. recommend
Super nice, available outside class and had pretty easy exams. Weekly quizzes and exams are literally just homework questions, do it and you'll pass.
The best professor I've had so far. He explains concepts very clearly and organizes lectures well. He does go very fast in class, but if you go to office hours he is always super helpful. Do the homework, it helps you understand the lectures and very similar problems end up on quizzes. Tests aren't bad and he gives accurate practice tests.
Marco is the best prof I have. Hes funny and cares about his students while putting in the most effort to make sure we grasp the material. He makes the material easier to understand by explaining problems in slightly different ways. The weekly quizzes are extremely manageable if you show up and study. Love you Marco. The nicest prof ever.
Marco is such a great guy and an amazing professor. His lectures are in-depth and use a lot of examples, making the content super easy to understand. The weekly quizzes are not hard if you do the homework, and the final was fairly easy. Highly recommend this professor!
Marco is a great prof. He explains everything clearly in lecture, and tests/quizzes are very similar to textbook problems/practice worksheets. I struggled a lot with calc in high school, but this was one of the easiest courses Ive taken at NEU. He drops the lowest two quiz scores, which is very nice as your grade is 100% tests/quizzes/the final.
He writes quickly which can make note-taking a little difficult, but he explains everything very well. He is engaging and has a good sense of humor. I couldnt think of a way to make class better.
Loved this class. You gotta show up and pay attention to the class because he does go quite quick during lecture but he makes everything super easy to comprehend. He uses real life scenarios to help and the class builds on each topic learned. Difficulty is like 9th or 10th grade math.
Knowledgable and personable.
I enjoyed his class, I am not usually good at math but I was proud of my grade. Two things I don't like are that there's only a worksheet and homework with a total of 8 questions to study for the quizzes, so there's not much to practice with. Secondly, the final exam is worth 40%, which is very stressful.
One of the best profs I have ever had. Explains things eloquently and does so many examples in class you know exactly what's coming for quizzes and tests. If you literally write down every example and do the worksheets he sends out the class is an obtainable A. Don't miss class or you will be lost. Can't believe how easy he makes calculus look.
Amazing professor, do take his class
Amazing teacher- very open to helping students and answering questions. Explains complicated math concepts throughly (great for people that aren't mathematically inclined). One of the easiest math courses offered BUT only if you attend class, pay attention, and take detailed notes. He's a fair grader. Goes through material quickly, so pay attention
I am horrible at math and took this class for my NUpath math credit. Literally SO easy, but only if you actually show up to class. If you show up to class then you can get an A in your sleep. I got 100% on almost all of the quizzes just because I showed up and somewhat paid attention -- take this class! Also he is funny and makes cheesy jokes
I highly recommend taking Professor Rainho's class. For someone who despises everything math related, Professor Rainho made learning the topics bearable and understandable. I will say, however, you are only graded on tests and quizzes. However, if you study and do the extra practice, you should have no problems getting a good grade.
Prof. Rainho has been my favorite lecturer at NEU so far. Very accommodating of all learning styles and knowledge levels coming into the class which makes his lectures clear and easy to follow. He gives incredibly thorough and positive feedback that makes students feel accomplished and supported throughout the semester. 100% Recommend.
I struggled with Calculus so much in high school and always thought it was because I was just stupid and couldn't understand the material. Now that I am taking it with Professor Rainho, I feel like it was the easiest class throughout my whole semester- he goes very fast though which isn't good for people who have never taken calculus before.
Marco is literally the best professor. He is very knowledgeable and makes the course easy to understand. If you have questions during his lectures he will stop and further elaborate without belittling you. He responds to emails and accommodates helping students outside his normal office hours. Marco makes learning math fun and enjoyable.
Recommend! Explains concepts REALLY REALLY well and somehow makes even really confusing topics make sense. Teaches concept & goes through example problems every class (hard to miss class because it is fast paced). Provides worksheet before every quiz with answers explained that is super relevant to the quizzes. Made calc 2 a really enjoyable class!
He is the best professor that I ever had. He made cal2 seems so easy and enjoyable. Highly recommend him. He always caring for his students and good at explain the concept. All his quizzes are similar with the worksheet that he provide before each quiz. He also is a generous grader.
Marco's teaching style just did not work for me. He was really quiet and would stand at the chalkboard and write what was on his paper. Most of the time, I was just trying to keep up with what he was writing and not processing the information. He moved way too fast in class, and his weekly quizzes (50% of your grade) were pretty challenging.
Prof Rainho only defines concepts and then works through problems in class. While receptive to student questions, he does not actively invite students to guess/take the next step in the question, thus leading to more memorization than understanding. He posts quiz and exam review worksheets on Canvas but otherwise does not use Canvas for much.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. His lectures are straightforward and going to office hours helps a lot. He is extremely patient and will explain even simple concepts to you if you just ask. Has homework problems you can do but he does not grade them. He also posts practice worksheets/tests which are very similar to the actual tests.
Very caring professor. Knows all students by name. The content he covers in lectures is very similar to what appears on quizzes and tests, so 100% go to class. All of the quizzes and exam questions are extremely similar to the worksheets he gives out, and there are virtually 0 curveball questions, so getting a good grade is easy if you do the work.
good
Very nice professor and easy to chat with. Expect weekly quizzes, but he drops the lowest 2 for mathematical thinking. His lectures are based on a preplanned PDF that he has uploaded on Canvas, so missing a class or two won't kill you, as you can likely teach yourself the content. I would recommend attending each class though. Homework not graded.
Always very open to questions and ready to re-explain concepts he just went over, and always cracking jokes. I would do the math correct on a quiz but write the wrong answer, and he would mark me correct because of my work. Super nice guy!
I absolutely loved having Professor Rainho, he made the material so easy to understand, he also had only 7 out of 9 quizzes count for a grade which means you can bomb 2 if needed and be just fine. The midterm and final exam are incredibly easy if you do well on the quizzes. Just pay attention in class and do practice problems and you'll be fine
great prof but his teaching style didn't work for me. He knows his stuff but often expects us to know it as well. Also, most of his practice quizzes didn't reflect the real quiz. If you don't already have a baseline in calc, do not take him. He will answer any questions clearly and is available outside of class. Better than most profs.
Super chill, very understandable way of teaching. If you ask questions he'll answer them in such a manageable way. I found the subject material super easy and he made it very understandable. Nice guy as well!
Super nice guy, understood his lectures perfectly and was super responsive to questions! Never went to him for office hours but still got a B+. Chill dude!
take his class. such a nice and funny guy. i sat at the front of the class and would always chat with him. no participation. no graded homework. class is really what you make of it as in you get what you put into it. pretty easy concepts as long as you pay attention and practice. i wish i could take more classes with him he is that great.
Great professor. Makes the class super easy and manageable. His reviews are great and he always posts solutions. Highly recommend!
Tests (two) are each 20% of the grade, average of weekly quizzes (after two lowest are dropped) takes up 20%, and the final is 40%. No graded homework or participation, so your grade in the class is entirely what you put into it. He writes fast, but provides very clear explanations for practice problems and office hours are helpful!
Fantastic professor - wish he taught every math course. Made complicated topics approachable, and is very accessible outside class. He made it as easy as possible to excel in the class by providing so much review. Calc 2 was my favorite class this semester, which definitely wouldn't have been the case without such a good professor.
Great professor. His lectures are straightforward and going to class consistently is the best way to do well. I was a little scared coming into Calc 2 but he made complicated topics seem straightforward. He has office hours and is flexible to meet virtually outside. Practice worksheets and tests are great resources to use before quizzes and tests.
great prof super helpful i loved him but insanely harsh grader, class overall for calc 2 was really low and i witnessed many people drop the class in front of me
Rainho is very sweet and super helpful during his office hours, but his lectures were not very interactive. He simply took passages from the textbook and wrote them on the board with example problems. There was not a lot of simplifying the topics. It made the class hard to follow and I ended up dropping the class.
Rainho was an amazing teacher and meets every expectation you would want out of your professor for a math course. He understands the content well and presents it clearly with several examples in class. The grade you get is what you put in to the class. If you attend all of the lectures and do the homework and practice problems, you will do great.
Grade consists of 5 quizzes, 2 midterms (20% each), and 40% the final. He can write on the chalkboard kind of small and talk pretty quietly while teaching, but is extremely helpful at office hours. He teaches very well and will make sure you fully understand when you go to office hours. Highly recommend taking his course.
Professor Rainho is so good, I will recommend all the people to take his class. He has 7 quizzes and 3 exams the whole semester, but he will drop the 2 lowest quizzes, and offers many help in office hour. His lecture is clear, help u understand every thing. I love him sm!! He is the best teacher!!
Professor Rainho is by far one of the best professors I've had so far. He clearly explains the materials and the most efficient methods to answer problems. He is always open to questions and always clears any confusion you may have. The videos linked on the course syllabus are very helpful and follow the topics he covers in class. He is amazing.
Fastest-paced class I've taken, but very thorough. The worksheets he posts are amazing quiz reviews; I only did the textbook homeworks when I was confused on a topic. My wrist physically couldn't handle taking all of the notes, so I recommend just listening every other example problem. I feel like I finally understand integrals after this course.
Phenomenal! It would be unwise not to choose him! I'm not suggesting you pick him solely because I received a good grade in his class; rather, it's because he is truly exceptional.
Absolutely the best math professor i have ever had. He makes sure the students understand the basics of each concept and is extremely easy to get ahold of when you need extra help. highly highly recommend
Great professor, uses time very efficiently for every lecture and obviously wants his students to succeed. Very available outside of class, and holds extra office hours as you get closer to finals week. Weekly quizzes, but you know what will be on them. As long as you participate in class, and do homework/ review sheets, you'll do great!
Lots of proofs
he's so kind and he kind of gives organic chemistry tutor vibes :)
SUCH A SWEET GUY. He posts the lecture notes and worksheets and homework for practice. Sometimes it was hard to keep up in class but, if I had any questions he would always answer them and was very kind about it. He drops two quizzes and his tests are not that difficult. He is very funny and cares about his students.
Professor Rainho was amazing. There are weekly quizzes but they are very similar to the study guides, and he drops the lowest 2/7 quizzes which is very helpful. Definitely would take another class with him!
Clear consice and organized. He makes a study guide before every quiz and really sets up his students for success. He is awesome and the best professor I've ever had.
He just reads what's on the notes and barely explains. I genuinely do not understand why he has such a high rating, from what I've heard from others, they all confused. No one understands or learned anything from his class we all have to spend extra time relearning on our own. I sit at the very front and still can't read his notes.
Clearest math teacher I have ever had. I've heard many complaints about the difficulty of calc 2 but prof. Rainho makes it very understandable, and teaches concisely. Gave optional worksheets to study b4 quizzes. I recommend showing up to class, listening, and working on practice problems and you'll do well. Practice exams/finals available day 1.
Calc 2 is a hard class, and his lectures are not great if you are new to the topics. Try to come to class with the homework done even before he explains the topic. Use the class as a review. Also, he has a monotone voice with little excitement, so getting lost is easy.
He is really nice/funny and responsive to emails. Has office hours weekly where he will explain things very in-depth. Math is tricky for me and his teaching style didn't totally align with what works for me (he writes all notes on a board in class and does problems while we take notes) and the grade is based entirely on exams/quizzes. Love him tho
Honestly a great professor, teaches lectures really well and is super responsive to questions. Doesn't give out graded homework so your grade is based on 7 weekly quizzes, 2 exams, and the final. If you don't know the subject already, just go to the lectures and take notes and you'll be fine. Ask questions until you understand, and you'll get an A
Marco is the GOAT. Took his Calc 2 class in the spring and honestly hes a great prof. He is really good at explaining things which other prof's aren't. I highly recommend you take anyone of his classes. He uses two textbooks. you can find both online for free. only regret is that I wish I went to class so I could get to know him a bit more.
I would not take this course if you do not have moderate to strong math skills. His lectures are pretty quick and the class is solely graded on tests and quizzes. I personally enjoyed his class and he made it pretty easy for me, but if you cannot quickly pick up topics do not take this class.
Calc 2 is a rough class but he makes it so much more digestable. However DO NOT miss a lecture if you can help it because playing catch up is no joke. the quizzes each week were as expected and he does a great job reviewing and going over practice problems consistently.
If you pick up math easily, this class won't be too bad. If you don't, good luck trying to hold a conversation with him. I struggled a bit at the start, and he had such a horrible attitude that I preferred studying alone over asking for help during office hours. His quizzes/exams aren't bad (similar to the assigned homework) calc 2 is just hard.
GOATTed he has such a blunt attitude towards math, but if you get passed him laughing after you ask a question and acting like it is common sense, he is truly such a good prof. clear concise great lectures, but do not miss class, or you WILL fall behind. he also only gives one practice test for the midterm and one for the final which is hard.
Great guy. A lot of the class was just the lecture notes and him writing on the board what was written there. But the class itself went well as the material wasnt too hard. Just make sure you pay attention.
He's one of the best professors in the Math department I've had. I thought I would struggle a lot in this class since I had a hard time even in Calc 1, but he made lectures so easy to understand. He gave us tips and tricks to remember how to solve problems. His lectures are very helpful. Really nice, chill dude.
Grading can sometimes be harsh, but one of the better math professors!
Literally the best professor. He is so sweet and understanding and makes lectures very helpful. Quizzes were fairly easy and followed lecture material.
He is a great professor, very clearly explains things and answers questions whenever people have them. Weekly quizzes but the two lowest scores are dropped and he genuinely wants his students to succeed.
He is hot.
Literally the best. He is so sweet and is so good at teaching. Very passionate about math and wants all of his students to do well. Weekly quizzes that are so easy you can study the night before for. Drops 2 lowest quizzes. Tells you exactly what is on the quizzes. He is so straightforward. As long as you pay attention in class you will have an A.
Going to class is your best resource to understanding the material better; he explains clearly but fast. He has a sarcastic tone, but he genuinely wants you to understand the material and succeed, so please ask questions and attend office hours - very helpful. Only graded on quizzes, but lenient with credit. Also very funny and likes to make convo.
He gave really concise lectures that explained the material clearly while also making it really engaging. He does seven quizzes and drops the lowest two, and the quizzes were easy to prepare for if you used the study sheets he provided on Canvas. He provided practice Midterms and past Finals as well, which were really similar to the actual tests.
