Such a nice and great teacher, one thing that he is very good at is explaining(crystal clear)and the tests are pretty much like hw questions .
everything is explained really well and lectures are very useful. Homework is not mandatory but it'd be stupid not do them, his tests are very similar to hw problems. Since he's pretty young for a professor I guess he doesn't have much confidence, but he's a better professor than he thinks. definitely recommend him!
Clear, very organized, if you do your homework and struggle on it like he says, you'll do good in the class A or a B
Such a great instructor and also a nice guy.You will never be bored in his class.very organized.Physics is not an easy subject but if you go to his lectures and also do your HW you will do fine on your tests. He grades fairly. The only disappointment about him is that he takes very long time to grade the tests.Take him and you wont regret!
Best professor ever!
he's a nice guy and awesome human being :) good teacher and fun class I had him for 102 and 103, the test are not easy and he likes to challenge his students specially in 102 , but he always has an answer for every student's question and that's make him awesome ....nice job Marcus/Maziar
He is not average .... he is great
He is AN EXCELLENT PROFESSOR that actually makes physics interesting. I highly recommend taking him. He cares a lot about his students and knows who's doing what. He explains everything clearly. He can repeat many times to make sure you got the concept. I just LOVE TO BE IN HIS CLASS!
VERY CLEAR. But if you don't like physics it will be slightly hard. Does not like it when you ask TOO many questions. Cz some people abuse it (rhymes with shrafi).
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! Explains everything, has patience, and he isn't lying when he says he tries to answer everyone's questions. Interesting class and VERY VERY CLEAR. Tied for my favorite professor in the school.
Professor Afshar is proof of the Physics PhD bottleneck in academia. If this were 30 years ago, he would probably be tenured at an Ivy League school. His credentials are absurdly humbling, Bachelors from Berkely,Phd from UCI in Quantum Gravity. He is clear as day and consider yourself lucky to have him grace you with his time and walth of knowledge
I would say stay away but you are, unfortunately, stuck with him. I got an 'A' in his class because I studied the book on my own. (very good book). He hated my questions and always put me down. Some Engineering students corrected him and he did not like it. His slide shows are awful and pointless and the HW is long. Sorry, you're stuck. :-)
Professor Afshar is the BEST! He is so caring and kind. He teaches with great passion and he wants everyone to learn. He is so helpful and he gives students the greatest opportunity to succeed. I highly recommend him for physics’ classes and suggest you don't have any other teacher but Dr. Afshar. As I said, HE IS THE BEST!
He is perfect. Dr. Afshar is very patient with all questions, made physics easy to understand, Knowledgeable with a sense of humor. You never get tired in his class. Take him, you won't regret.
He is the best physics professor in this world! He cares too much about his students. He spends extra office hours everyday explaining. Knows everything about physics and math, he always had an answer for every question. He is very funny and friendly. I always enjoyed his class. MARCUS (MAZIAR) YOU ARE THE BEST!
Prey that your class has a lot of students in it because he curves and only top 20% get A's, which is like 5-6 students in a regular 26/27 student class. His tests are pretty tough, and you need to know the material (not just based on lecture notes). He knows a lot about Physic, but his explaining is not the best. There is hw and long lab work.
This guys is awesome!! He really cares about his students. If u struggle on hw a lot then you will do fine on his test... Again, make sure u do the hw bcuz tests are based on it. And ask a lot of questions!!!!best physics teacher everrr
Dr. Afshar is a really enthusiastic teacher. He keeps everyone engaged and uses a lot of visual aids and class participation to make sure that you do not just learn the information, but you retain it and will remember it later.
I doubt you will ever see a professor like Prof. Afshar. His enthusiasm is just enough to make you listen to his lecture. He is very precise and will make you understand physics from inside out. I really enjoy his teaching.
He is the best! The lectures are great! To be honest, I didn't study the book at all! I just studied the lecture notes and I got A on the tests!
Hes a great teacher! Hes very smart and teaches you all the concepts. You have to attend every single class session in order to get points for lab. Reasonable homework. Didnt study the book too much but it did help. Test are mainly from lecture notes and homework that you do every week. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!! Easy A if you put in effort.
If you put in an hour a week you'll ace the class! Short answer questions are straight from the homeworks you turn in once a week (super easy hw) & multiple choice is pretty much from the book and lectures. Attendance is mandatory because you do a lab a week. Overall, easy A if you put in some effort! Highly recommend him 110!
Really nice guy, and brilliant too. Easy A for intro! Just be sure to do all your work, and put a decent (or just some) amount of time into studying for his exams. His exams are mostly based off the lecture than the lab.
He is very knowledgeable, punctual, organized, clear, and an amazing instructor. Dr. Afshar is always available if you have any questions and takes his time with his students. His tests are from the PP, hw, and the booklet. I recommend him to anyone interested in learning.
He may be knowledgeable, but he does not have experience in teaching, so u will end up reading the whole book to understand the concept and will not get an A in his tests if you don't read the book.He states that he wants to prepare students for UC system, which is self studying. Recommendation letters depends on whether he likes the student or not.
It's a privilege to be in his class. It may not easy but you will learn a lot. He does everything he can to make you understand the material. His lectures are important but also make sure to attend his office hours.
Dr. Afshar is the best professor at Glendale Community College. His teaching skills are great. However it's not that easy to get an A in his class, because his exams are not that easy. Take him if u really want to learn something!!!
Dr. Afshar is the worst professor I have ever had in GCC. He relies on his power points to teach, and the class is a complete waste of time. I did not attend the classes for PHY 101 and got an A.Skip the Physics series in GCC if you can, otherwise you will have no other choice but to ruin your study experience for 3 semesters.
He's not so much an educator as much as a PowerPoint slide reader. Going to class is completely pointless; all your studying will be done with the textbook. If you don't read the textbook word for word you wont learn anything and will fail. He NEVER responds to emails and office hours are packed, no point in going. You're on your own to get an A.
He is the most caring professor ever!! Understands physics, super helpful, and I highly recommend taking him. It is physics, so its not gonna be an easy A but Dr. Afshar will guide you. Do your homework, go to class and study, you will be fine. HE IS THE BEST! GREAT PERSONALITY!
Take him! his class is awesome! He cares about his students a lot. He is very kind, knows physics very well, and helps a lot. you will have fun with physics. At the end of semester you will have fallen in love with physics. I had very nice experience. Thanks Prof. Afshar.
Professor Afshar really knows physics and the best part he knows how to TEACH it to others. He offers very insightful advice on how to solve problems that you cannot get from the text.
Worst professor ever.
He is awesomeee. This man over here is not only a good teacher but a good man. He cares about his students and he is more than helpful. Ive had some good teachers but none compare to him. His lectures are so entertaining, and it's so hard to fall asleep. I love this teacher. I wish there were more like him.
Just go to his website and take a look at his powerpoint lectures. take the class if it seems logical to you. The UC system that he is applying to the physics courses to teach every concept in physics, not considering the time frame, and the huge effort that the student should put at home to self study, makes him a NO NO. GCC needs to consider this
Doesnt really care about teaching the students. He only cares about his research. Lectures are somewhat helpful but mostly pointless and too easy to matter in real problems. Office hours are always packed and useless. If youre taking him get ready to learn on your own by doing problems in the book. May god help you if you ask "too many questions".
Dr. Afshar is the Best professor at GCC. if you want to learn the subject of Physics then definitely take him. Dr. Afshar has tons of knowledge in Physics and his ability to teach is amazing.. Thank you Dr. Afshar
Physics in general is not an easy class. You need to study a lot especially in this class. The homework is the key to getting a good grade and also make sure to read the book. He will be there to help you during his office hours. One thing I didn't like about Afshar is that he can be really rude if you did not understand a simple conceptproblem
afshar is a very disrespectful person to most students. If you don't give him everything he wants his attitude problem will haunt you every day. If he dislikes you even a little bit, don't try to ask him for help.
So, this guy is pretty smart. He knows his stuff, but he is rude. Really,he has some attitude problems. He is a good power-point teacher. He assigns a fair amount of homework, which actually prepares you for the test. If you read the book, and do the homework, you should do well. He also posts his lectures online. Decide for yourself. Good luck...
Ya'll get ready to read every word in that book, yee'haw! It's not too bad, just read the book and do a ton of your own online research and studying, and you'll be fine. Tests are clear cut physics problems. Lectures are optional. The labs for this class are decent. He taught it, and surprisingly he helped when called upon, so can't complain.
So far he is the Best at GCC . Thank you Dr. Afshar.
Dr. Afshar is a nice professor. his lectures are very clear, his tests are not easy. In general, Physics is hard to understand, so be ready to study the book do the HW, and study his slides. Going to his lectures is strongly recommended, He makes Physics easy to understand. *** He knows & explains Physics very well.***
He is number one at GCC. Couldn't be better than him for Physics. He makes physics easy to understand. Thank you Dr. Afshar...
Day or night, rain or shine, jury duty or no jury duty, he expects you to read one chapter and do its respective hw every week. Lectures are clear and available online because he would prefer us to pay attention rather than write down every word in the powerpoint. Office hours will feel like Black Friday if you go the day before a test.
Here is what I have to say about doctor Afshar. He is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He doesn't just teach, he makes you motivated. If you want to take physics and pass it with an "A" and not study hard for it, that's not gonna happen. Take his class if you like engineering and actually enjoy physics. Doctor Afshar, thank you.
Cool professor, man. This was my third class with him. Hard subject, but he is CRYSTAL clear about stuff. But the best thing about his classes are that he curves it based on standard deviation, unlike no-curve upper-level math classes, which are just as difficult.
He's likely your only choice. Prepare to work for your grade, as he grades on a harsh curve. Teaches lectures well, but seems to lack the ability to answer questions well. Bring something else to work on in class so that others' questions don't end up wasting your time, as he will spend a disproportionate amount of time on easy parts of questions.
he makes physics even more complicated. He is very tricky when he grades. It is always a risk to take his class. If you want to play with your GPA go ahead and take his class. I suddenly get a D instead of a B, and when I asked him what the grading style is, he had no real answer for me. Stay away for his classes especially if you want to transfer.
Stay away seriously
He's your only choice. OK professor. The grade you get is directly proportional to the amount of time you devote to doing the problems.
Professor Afshar is not only a great lecturer, but is also an amazing physicist! Moreover, he is a passionate teacher who is always seeking to improve his teaching style. Not an easy class, but when is learning easy?
HE IS A ERY NICE PROFESSOR, GOOD TEACHER. GOOD PERSONALITY. TAKING HIS CLASS IS A RISK BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOUR GRADE IS UNTIL HE POSTS IN MYgcc. i DON'T RECOMMEND HIM. THE CLASS IS STRESSFUL. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE BIGGEST SHOCK
Afshar is a great professor. The subject matter is difficult, but if you attend lectures, read the book, and do the assigned homework, you'll be fine. His tests are very closely related to the homework, so you know what to expect on exams. His lectures are very clear and make the book material more accessible. Difficult class, great professor.
Very good teacher; his lectures are clear and he is more than willing to help during office hours. The grade is curved, too, which helped (on some tests an 85 A). Make sure to do the homework! 80-100% of the material on the tests and the final was straight from the homework, so if you do all the problems you will almost certainly get an A.
His grading policy is unclear and he is boring. Do not take his class.
Dr. Ashar is an amazing professor. He knows physics very well and explains it very clearly. You have to read the book and do all the homework and go to his office hours in regular basis. Of course physics is always hard, but if you want to learn something about physics take him you won't regret
Best professor. Lectures super clear. Questions answered if you've showed that you've studied and put in effort. But, can be mean if you are lazy and aren't a good student. Has high expectations. Lots of homework, reading, and studying. Grading is tough. The fact that he is very well spoken and intelligent makes up for any negative feedback.
He is a very good professor in terms of lectures, but his grading policy for his lab is unclear. He definitely has an attitude problem with students and will target you if he suspects you of being lazy. His tests are not that difficult if you do all the ascribed work, but he grades harshly on certain questions. Your most likely stuck with him sadly
If you don't do the homework you're basically not gonna get a good grade. If you show you care and do the work you'll be fine, but if you dont do the homework you're gonna get a lot of attitude and not do well. The final is basically your grade and so is the lab. 15 15 15 midterm 35 final 20 lab. you probably have no choice but if you work youre ok
You have to thoroughly remember each chapter with all the example problems and his lecture slides and do all the homework or you wont get an A. He is a very rude person to most students and will give you attitude if you arent a perfect student, take it with anyone else if you can
He is the best professor I've ever had. His lecture is very clear. If you guys want to success in his class, you have to do more homework and ask questions to the professor are the best way to survive in his class. . I'm sure that It will help you even after transfer.
He may be good at lectures, but his tests are terrible and no extra points for class.
He has the worst attitude ever. He is very disrespectful. Makes fun of students when they ask him question. Talking to him is also stressful. Do yourself a favor and don't take his class
His very arrogant attitude will make you rethink your major, when students ask questions he is mostly rude and will make fun of students in general. The only good thing about him are his easy to follow lectures, but exam questions are a bit unpredictable and even more so is his grading. If I could take this classes again it would not be at GCC.
One of the BEST professors at GCC! He puts a lot into his lectures and he is very good at explaining. He is very patient in office hours and will explain every detail. He may seem intimidating in 101, but in 102/103 he's always cracking jokes. He values students who put in the effort. If you do the homework, you will be absolutely fine.
you, as student, will lean real physics and you will reach to somehow the logic you need in the future by taking his classes. Thanks to the most powerful professors at GCC. I do appreciate you for the efforts and help for us.
Dr. Afshar has a great set of teaching skills, he is able to break down the most difficult concepts! However, he has difficulties with social interactions, gets irritated and angry very easily and suddenly. Dr. Afshar, you could really be an inspiration for your students, please consider anger management treatment.
He is one of the best professors ever. He may not warm when communicates, but we take classes for learning Physics, and his teaching method and explanation is very best. If you want to learn something in physics, I recommend his classes, but if you want just a letter grade you need to think about taking other class or to study hard. He has As too
Ive completed all of my physics with Dr. Afshar. His lectures are very well presented, he breaks down the concepts, and his always available outside of class. He is stricter than your usual teacher, and the class demands discipline from the student. Nonetheless if you read, and do the work you will pass with a good knowledge, and a good grade.
Dr. Afshar's class might be the toughest I've taken, but it was definitely worth it. While he comes off as intimidating in the beginning, you'll grow to appreciate the sternness. His tests are VERY parallel to the homework and the curve helped our semester. Fantastic instructor, don't slack off, and you'll be totally fine. Labs weren't bad either.
Prof. Afshar's PHY101 is not an easy class, especially if you haven't taken any prior physics. If you want to pass, do ALL of the homework as tests are very similar. His lectures are clear and he does well in highlighting the important concepts. Review his lectures often and make an effort to participate the best you can, and you will be fine.
Smart professor, but was very abrasive and accusatory to me in office hours when asking about a lab assignment grade I received. He was not understanding at all or helpful in this case, and did not properly handle this student interaction.
Dont take this class if you are not an engineering or physics student. He gives no partial credit on his exams which means your answers have to be near correct. You cannot even show your work for partial credit which is ridiculous. He is a good instructor but makes the class more difficult than it should be especially during the pandemic.
Dont take him. He is the worst person I have ever met. Tests are extremely hard, nothing similar to homework, multiple choice for physics test, so you dont even have partial credit , closes test after and you dont see your mistake. Doesn't discuss the test after you are done.
He is the worst person I have ever knew in my life. Worst teacher ever. Don't take him if you care about your GPA. My first C ever. For straight A student his class grade was C. My PHY 102 grade is A. So it was not me , it was him for me to get C on PHY 101
Best physics prof at GCC but not easy at all. Don't come here and expect to have an easy A or even an easy B. I really recommend him if you are a physics or engineering student and you really want to learn the subject matter. The people complaining about him are either lazy or want things just to be handed to them.
Dr. Afshar teaches well and clearly, he does not really care for lower grade students he cares and answers the top students' questions often. The labs were not easy need to study the book. My classmate helped me for 1ts lab because he cares less to tell you how to do it if it's your first-ever physics lab - no partial credit no HW grades.
His lectures are good but he himself can be very condescending at times. He speaks down to the students a fair bit but he knows his material and is well informed. He also is a strict grader on exams.
These reviews are all fake. He does it himself. Because he is a 0/5. worst teacher in human existence. He prays on your downfall
He is by far the most miserable human being I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. He is so disrespectful and condescending and if you do not understand the material, he will scold you and talk down on you like other are nothing. If you can take physics, take it somewhere else instead of with this bitter lowlife sub-human.
Professor Afshar is one of the best professors in GCC and definitely, the best Physics professor I have ever had. He knows what he teaches, not just as a great professor, but is also incredible at Physics. Of course, if you take this class you need to be ready to read a lot. If you read and listen to his lectures, You will see a great improvement.
Avoid. You're welcome. He writes his own positive reviews it seems.
I have honestly no idea where these positive reviews come from. He is consistently condescending and rude toward students and is generally very unhelpful. The class is hybrid and every single lecture video on youtube has around 3 ads, sometimes more. He once answered my question with "be smarter." he has no issues embarrassing you in front of peers.
His lectures are GOLD. He won't be your 'friend', yet you can be sure your grade is fair. Very structured, clear grading, values actual involvement over showing off. Getting an A is possible, but I was overconfident. Tough tests, yet he gives a lot of practice before. It is a shame he doesn't teach 102. Will return to get an A in his 103. GOAT.
Easily one of the most strict teachers in GCC. Not in a bad way though. Professor Afshar is an amazing professor, but it's unfortunate you get little lectures. The exams are tough and labs affect your grade a ton. This was the most rigorous classes I've ever taken. Physics 101 was insanely easy for me, but I did have to fight for an A in 103.
Afshar is neither a great or bad professor, but sets clear expectations. He can overexplain simple topics and take a while to get to the point. Labs are graded harshly, but exams are fair with a formula sheet. Online lectures have lots of ads. 6-week pace is brutal because of pacing/material, not the professor. Overall he got the job done well IMO.
