Goes though the notes at steady pace, often lets class out early and we still get the work done. Seems like a very cute old biritish man. Would pick him over Consolo ANY time.
First day of class told us he didn't have time to answer questions in class. I just found him to be all over the place and not that helpful. I used to like calculus before this 1080 course, I felt like i was totally confused everytime i listened to him lecture. I do think he meant well but the class was dreadful

*SNOREEEEEEEEEEEEE*
HILARIOUS way better then Cunsolo, He's a really dopey english guy who probably has no actual education in math what so ever and he constantly makes mistakes and oddly enough has a hard time answering questions with numbers but if you dont really like calc hes your guy the first bits boring but he's hilarious and he looks like neil from art attack
I had him for Math*2130 as well. He is an amazing proff! Make sure to do your homework because his midterms have similar questions. He is such a nice person and really wants you to do your best! Definately my favourite proff ever!
Good prof. Overall, I liked him. He simplified things, but I think it's because he doesn't totally understand (OK, obviously he does, just be prepared for mistakes). Attended a few Consolo lectures and decided to go back to Garvie. Went through material at better pace.
Garvie is great! Midterms were a bit tricky, mainly because his outline sucked, but lectures are good.
he seems to waste a lot of class time by pausing, and unable to explian or answer questions clearly. i had to ask students from the other section to fill in class notes properly in order to study.
Good guy, wastes a bit of class time but gets the message across.
this is my third time having him. I like him a lot since the first time i had him (advance calc I). I like the way he teaches although he sometimes does not have enough time to finish the class due to some talking but i still do not find the class boring. Based on my results, i did well, so he is a good teacher!!
Prof Garvie is awesome! His lectures can be a bit boring - but his notes are very helpful. Midterms/exams are extremely fair - if you put in the effort, you'll get the grade you want. His notes were very good for referencing when doing textbook questions. Awesome overall & can't wait to have him again!
Professor Garvie is very good, he knows his stuff and aims to make it accessible. The material is really useful and requires practice. This was my favourite class of the semester
Great prof - tries to make a somewhat boring course more interesting, always in a good mood. Tests and exams are fair - if you study you will do well. Makes sure everyone understands before moving on which slows down the course and he may not finish on time - but that just means less to study for the final!
Very good teacher, enjoyed lecture and he made the content very easy to understand.
Professor Garvie is by far my favorite professor in all of my 3 years of university. He is incredibly helpful, kind and truely cares about his students.
Although the material is a little dry, his notes are very thorough and clear. He is very helpful. If you study with his notes and do the homework he suggests, you will do great in the class.
good teaching skills, went slow enough to grasp concepts
Garvie is a nice enough guy, but he's a giant hypocrite. He chastises people for showing up to class late, and then shows up late himself, or cancels altogether. Furthermore, he wonders why we're behind when he's canceled 2 classes. He's nice and easy, get your hands on his previous midterms because he is too lazy to change tests.
His notes make everything super clear and I like the way he organizes his classes. Getting previous midterms is key to doing well, but if you do the homework you'd do fine without them. He made a very dry math class more interesting.
Clear concise notes, good textbook and a great teacher; go to class, do your homework and ask questions and you will do well. HIts one of the few university courses that I have taken where it was set up so that if you invested the time and effort into learning the material, you were bound to do well.
Very good and clear teacher. Gives you the basics in class then you have to do the homework to completely understand the material so you can remember it. Great Prof and awesome guy
Very good at explaining the material, when the proofs at times get difficult he still makes it easy to understand. Easily my best prof of the semester. Highly recommended.
Loved his class.. really easy to get a really high mark by putting minimum work
The class was awful, but it's not his fault it was at 8:30am in war mem. Do the old midterms and finals and its gravy.
Completely screwed us over on the midterm. Made it harder and completely different from previous years. Other than that, hottest prof in Guelph by far.
Holds a grudge. One member of our class complained about some of his actions and he retaliated by completely changing how he did his tests (which had been the same since he first taught the course in Guelph). 2nd test was a bit easier... The lectures though... they are killer... the material is easy but he makes it horrible...
He is very smart. But his teaching method is difficult to follow. He makes a lot if mistakes in his textbook and emails.
Great class
Goes through examples too fast. Makes mistakes pretty often, and hard to keep up.
Awesome guy, hilarious but not on purpose. Constantly correcting himself in his lecture notes, emails, and homework problems/solutions. Goes very fast, and does math horizontally, and in strange language. You will see "" more times than an equal sign.
Best teacher ever!
Garvie is the best teacher and has the best stories to tell. Teaches us about immunity and health as well as math. Gives practice questions and tests that help prepare us well.
Best prof I've ever had, if you want the best math jokes take this class.
Prof. Garvie's knowledge and explanations are absolutely on point. He knows his material and does a great job at explaining it. If he knows that the material he's teaching is more complicated, he will take his time to explain it, which is helpful. While some of his methodology might be different from highschool, it makes sense and is still correct.
Never tricks you for examinations. He clearly provides practice questions which will be on the exams so all you have to do are those, and you'll have no problems getting close to 100% He has renewed a sense of excitement in me towards math. I haven't taken math in over 6 years and now I love it and have an A for the first time.
Garvie explains mathematical concepts very well, I also enjoy his math jokes. He uses an appropriate and effective method for teaching the course content and ensuring success in his students. Would highly recommend.
Garvie is hilarious! Absolutely amazing professor, and it saddens me that some of the reviews on here saddened him :( His practice exams are really helpful, keep doing what you do Professor!
Garvie is an absolute Beautician, clear notes and his practice exams are extremely helpful to studying. People on here seem to think that they should pass without doing work. This is math people!! It's not an easy A, but Garvie does his best at making sure everyone who deserves one gets one. Extremely fair prof and also a funny guy.
Awesome prof. I recommend doing all of the homework because it is easy and questions are taken from the homework for the test. Do the practice midterm! Almost the exact same as the real midterm! Very quirky but hilarious!
Great Professor, although very pedantic.
Doesnt explain concepts much
He's a beauty, funny too. No but seriously his laugh killed me and he was a good teacher.
Garvie is a very knowledgeable guy but gets ahead of himself while teaching a introductory class.. teaching some that should be in advanced calculus. If you don't have a VERY strong math background get a tutor! Goes very fast makes a lot of mistakes in lecture and homework. Confusing class. Tests similar just gives much harder versions of question.
Amazing Prof. Explanations and writing easy to like understand. Never liked math until I took his course, now LOVE IT!!!
Garvie is one of my favourite profs. I honestly never felt confident with myself in Mathematics, but he's very clear during lectures and is aware that some students aren't as strong in this subject. Love this guy, wish I had him again!
Garvie is the best prof I've had! He makes everything he teaches and tests you on very clear! he cares about his students and wants you to succeed! He is very intelligent which makes his teaching a bit harder to understand but overall he is great!
Not the best teacher, but a great person. Gets really into what hes teaching, sometimes so into it that he goes too fast and hard to understand. Not too hard of a course though, so its easy to get on your own. Lectures are either boring as hell or so funny. THE PRACTICE MIDTERM & EXAM ARE EXACTLY LIKE THE REAL THINGS. ALMOST WORD FOR WORD!
Easily one of the best math profs I've had. His lectures include so many examples to work through problems together and on your own, to ensure you really understand the concepts. He posts practice midterms and finals, which are VERY similar to the ones you have to write. Very straight-forward and easy class!
He's a great teacher. Definitely take him. Everything is clear, concise and if you work a little you'll end with great marks. Go to the lectures and do the homework. Only one quiz, one midterm and one exam. All very easy to pass.
Easiest math class, go to class, do your homework and you will pass
To be fair, when I had Garvie, it was the first time he was teaching MATH*1030. He expected way too much out of a group of commerce students. He is a very intelligent person, I just think he may have had a little too much faith in us. Needless to say I failed the course and will be taking it DE over the summer.
I'm usually not a math person but Prof. Garvie has made math easier to an extent. I would advice that if you want to pass, do the homework, practice questions and go to class. As a side note, he seems like a caring person and intelligence as well. He also makes math jokes. And might he takes dressing to a whole new level :)
Do your homework or you won't pass. His lectures in class will NOT be enough to pass. HE gives you previous midterms and exams to study off of but do not bank on studying those, because generally he follows the same format but decides he's going to screw you over and make it 10x harder! Good luck! :D
Goes by stuff super fast during lectures. A gr12 review quiz, two midterms and a final exam is all you get graded on all year. Do homework and go to class or else you'll be behind a lot just after one day. Midterms dont change much from year to year as he gives us previous midterms to study off of.
Favourite teacher by far, Garvie is my fav human. Would take again just for him.
He is a great teacher but lots of tests
In class, you can tell the content is much simpler than he would like to elaborate... Sometimes he goes on tangents, but that's part of what makes him such a memorable professor. Make sure you follow along and DO THE HOMEWORK (there really isn't much, it's just boring for some). Garvie does his best to make every single thing accessible.
Best math teacher I have ever had. Gives homework with full and clear answers for each question. Also gives past years midterms which is very similar to the midterms he gives. Do the homework and do the past years midterms and you will be fine. Even if you are like me and cannot do math for the life of you, you will do well in his class.
Such a great professor. He was interested in the material and tried to share his enthusiasm with the class. His tests were very fair and strongly based off of the lecture notes. He wanted students to succeed, and was approachable and willing to answer questions. His accent also made lectures nice to listen to, and he is a very engaging lecturer.
Such a nice and pleasant teacher to have. Seems like such a nice guy and smart too!! Also a real cutie pie, reminds me of a giraffe.
Honestly the best professor in the entire world. He actually wants you to succeed, he gives you past midterms that are exactly like the ones he gives every year he just changes the numbers so you know exactly what you need to know. No textbook, just a workbook to copy lecture slides down. He is also the cutest thing ever, with his accent and all
Wants his students to succeed! Great Prof.
This is by far, one of the best intructors I have ever had. Trys to help out students as much as possible
Amazing prof! Out of all I've had he seems to care the most. Easy lectures, coherent explanations, and all in all a great course!
Good guy. Go to class though
He's amazing. Important to go to class but that's the rule for any lecture. First day he told us how important our mental health is, where to get help, and that everyone goes through it so not to be embarrassed. Humble teacher and very down to earth.
Really enjoy his classes
I took both MATH 1030 and MATH 1180 with him. If you go to his class and take notes, practice the homework questions and previous exam, you definitely can get 80s in his class. Really helpful class and easy. He is also a nice and funny guy!! His class is not boring at all.
Marcus is a great guy. He has an awesome personality. However, this year was the first year the midterms were take home. This sounded good at the beginning. BUT, this allowed students to slack off and use other resources to help with their midterms, which was helpful to get good grades on the midterms but many of us were screwed for the exam.
This class was easily the most boring math class I've ever taken... But Garvie was amazing! He made raw material more interesting and I loved his optional readings. He provided us with lots of insight about rigorous math, which is a fantastic introduction to the concepts covered in 2nd and 3rd year math classes. it was a very well-organized class.
I went to his class just to be there, I already knew all the content from high school. I just went since he made the lectures sort of fun. Exams and midterms were fair and no big surprises.
Great guy, really cares about students and wants you to succeed. No textbook in the class which is a plus. Just a workbook that he goes through with you in-class. He provides past midterms for you and is very accessible. Buddy
An amazing prof who is extremely laid-back. He comes off as a really odd person but does whatever he can for his students to pass.
Very respected. Is able to well explain considerably abstract/difficult mathematical concepts as simple as possible. Sadly, 2 midterms 25% each and 1 final worth 50%. Thus, your final grade may not be accurate to your performance as the midterms are only 4 questions. 1 question and boom your mark falls off.
Garvie was my favourite prof this year. So nice and sweet and genuinely cares about his students and hope they pass. Started doing take-home midterm because he wants to "reduce our stress". I don't like math but honestly never skipped because he is just the best and a great teacher. Is kind of odd at first but you learn to love it.
GOAT of a teacher
Very kind, funny, cares about students, gives plenty of examples. tests are easy. break down of the class is 2 25% midterms and a 50% final but all very easy.
Prof. Garvie is by far my favourite professor this semester. He has such a positive attitude when going over the content. He is very approachable and honestly the cutest man in the entire world.
I usually don't like math courses and was expecting to struggle through this class, but Marcus Garvie, being the absolute gem he is, made me hate the subject a bit less. His positive attitude is infectious and he makes a real effort to connect with his students. Personality aside, he's a very clear professor and makes concepts easier to understand.
Professor Garvie was one of the best teachers I have ever had. His lectures were very clear and he explained difficult concepts with ease. The midterms were both take home which made this course that I was nervous about a lot better. The exam was also very similar to the reviews he gave us which was awesome. Awesome guy overall!
Look, I was a lonely arts student taking this class that barely passed grade 11 functions, and didn't take grade 12 functions. If I can get a 70 in this class, so can you. The take-home midterms saved me. Thanks Marcus!
Garvie makes it easy for you to pass the course. 2 midterms were given to us to take home so that helped a lot. 1 week before the final I didn't know much content (could have sworn I'd barely pass). the final is very similar to the previous years papers. Once you work those you'll be fine.
Marcus Garvie was my favourite prof last semester!! He was really good at explaining the concepts, and his fill in the blanks notes were very helpful. The midterms and final were fairly easy if you did the homework questions. I took the class as an elective and it was definitely a good choice.
He is honestly the best prof I've had so far in Guelph!
Math is typically one of my more difficult subjects, however, Professor Garvie made it so easy and clear for me. This was the highest grade I had received in math including all the years I had taken math in highschool. It is important to attend the lectures as Professor Garvie goes over all the problems step by step to ensure students understand.
Garvie is the perfect person to teach this course. He is well-spoken, caring, and intelligent. The tests are all very fair and they are extremely similar to the previous year's tests (which he gives you for practice).
Really great prof. Math is hard for me but I studied and he made it easy to pass
not a hard course to begin with - my opinion. he does help you to dumb things down if you aren't comfortable with math. test problems are similar to in class examples. he's a charming person with a sexy accent. however, he likes to get bare foot in class. >.<
He was very clear about how the semester was payed out and there was not a work overload. He was also very accessible through email and clarified any questions I had really well.
all evaluations were multiple choice
All tests are open book and have tons of time to complete them.
Bloody amazing!
The garvinator is goated
best to ever do it
Great job
Very nice, and makes course enjoyable.
The best professor ever. I wish my other professors were like him. Full 5/5 star rating. I gurantee this professor is way better then any other professor in the university. Teaching style perfect, fun doing tests, and practice tests prepares you very well for the actual tests. Not an overwhelming course at all. Just a notebook writing course.
Words cannot describe Marcus Garvie, but numbers can; 10/10 Prof
Easy course, understands not all students are mathletes. dont be discouraged business students, take notes pay attention apply yourself and youll get an 80+. Online open book tests all MC. Easy to follow lectures just take the notes.
Mr.Garvie is the cutest prof ever. His business class is very easy and you can easily do well. There are minimal test and assignments. He uses his own workbook in place of a textbook. Take his class if you can
Although I did not like his teaching style, if you want a good mark, take this class. Garvie does not believe in tests, so exams are very easy. This class boosted my GPA a ton, and I recommend it.
Amazing prof highly recommend
I took this class in my first semester and I look back on it fondly. This guy was very easy-going which really balanced well with other courses. I like the structure and I'm a big fan of the MATH*1030 work book used to help teach the concepts (even though it's mostly grade 12 math). I highly recommend this prof and class.
Awesome lectures and easy tests. He explains the concept really clear and easy to understand.
This is the best prof I have had. Amazing teacher and he cares about his students. He wants to see everyone succeed. He does not believe in tests (everything is take home)! You can easily get a 90%+ in this course. I definitely recommend this prof. This class boosted my gpa.
Love Garvie! He states that he knows this is a mandatory course for most and doesn't expect us all to be mathematicians. Only three tests and a final exam. If you want to do well you need to do the homework, which can be pretty time consuming. His workbook was cheap, and he's honestly such a sweet guy :)
open book tests and available to help whenever
Genuine prof who cares about his students passing, 10/10 recommend.
Best teacher at Guelph
Beast
Best prof hand the University of Guelph.
best prof at guelph and its not even close
loveeeee himmmmmmm
he is the goat, 3 tests and a final, worse test gets dropped. tests are easy, final is alright
Love this guy!
Amazing prof.
Marcus was an overall nice guy, super helpful. I found his lectures went a bit fast pace for me- however, outside of class he explains everything in a nice pace.
This is my GOAT man. He's a down to earth guy, teaches well and is very lenient with his marking. Very easy to excel in his classes.
He deserves 5 stars. He wants you to pass his course with a good grade unlike other profs. He will change tests because he understands that if the average is too low that is on the teaching. Garvie is a G I love him.
He's a sweet man, who cares about his students. I like the generous structure of his class. I find that he doesn't teach the best as he will sometimes explain simple question in a very confusing way. He can be a little find hard to follow as he says a lot of british math terms but it's not to bad if you try to follow along.
Very clear to understand. Has detailed helpful steps for all homework questions. Practice tests are exactly like test.
Even though I had to take this course, I would still take it again just for the professor! Super understanding and cares about the students marks by giving additional marks for each test.
Class is very simple, material is super easy to understand, and the class is set up for you to do well, 3 tests in which your worst grade gets dropped and a online quiz you can take as many times as you well please for the best grade possible, if you are in a arts degree and require the natural science and you are ok in math you will do fine.
Garvie was great. Simple and straight forward testing. Nothing unexpected. Would take again.
Professor Garvie cares about his students, and he boosts test grades to ensure students walk away with good marks. That being said, Professor Garvie is not very good at explaining concepts. If you struggle with math or don't remember high school math, good luck, because you won't be understanding much.
Professor Garvie is amazing! Definitely take his class - super helpful and engaging. I found unstuckstudy really useful for extra practice and review.
He's a decent teacher who provides many resources for the course. The best part is that he's good at grading.
My favourite prof! I don't think it's necessary to attend lectures, but he encourages students to go and I would recommend because his lectures are entertaining, he is a great teacher and I always left feeling happier.
As someone who has always struggled with math, I've finally gotten a hang of it in this course. Professor Garvie explains concepts quite well, giving plenty of practice and review questions to study. If you do the homework questions and practice tests, and know how to solve similar questions that use a different formula for example, you'll do great
Marcus Garvie will probably be the best prof you will get in the first or second year. He is very passionate and fair. He provides a practice version for each midterm and exam, and honestly if you can pass doing that while at home, then you can pass the examination. Make sure to take one of his classes before he retires... he is a gem.
Guys an absolute g
Best prof I've ever had. It is test heavy but they're not hard at all. I saw someone say "Guys an absolute g" and I agree.
An amazing man. He knows how to teach and how to look good while doing it. If I could go back in time, I'd fail just so I can retake the course just to look at vro
Where do I start? Marcus just has this spark to him that lights up the room. Coming from the UK, he wore shorts every day in - degree weather, and is just an all-around beauty. Guys, a G. This class was enjoyable, coming from a math hater.
This guy is the best. Cares so much, and the tests are very fair. Loves seeing his students succeed. Would 100000% take again!
Great prof! Great at explaining content and genuinely nice guy. Posts lots of resources and examples. Going to class isn't mandatory but is recommended because he doesn't post recorded lectures and it's easy to fall behind. Tests aren't hard if you do the homework.
Amazing prof and wonderful person. Lectures aren't mandatory but he's great at explaining content and funny so worth it to go. My favourite class this semester by far. I hope I have him again. If you do the work in his class the tests aren't hard.
overall I do not think he is a good teacher. He is relatively kind, but goes way too fast during his lectures and overall is pretty difficult to understand. If you are good at math, just study u will be fine, if you suck at math like I do, good luck (its not the end of the world though). He allows cheat sheets on the test with whatever you wantonit
Great professor, lessons are easy to do, and as long as you do the homework and practice tests, you're chill. However, because the tests are short, marks could be very low if not prepared. A lot of the content is found easily if taken Advanced functions and calculus in High school, but if not, it's still very doable.
Professor Garvie had great lectures and the tests were always fair.
I didn't have a great high school math experience, and this class involves introductory Calculus and I found that it was pretty clear and simple to learn the way Garvie teaches it. i'll miss his lectures and his Scotish vocabulary lol
