very boring lecture. Grades hard. Tests get more difficult. Very few A's in clas
He sells notes in the library that correspond to his lectures. You just follow along in class and fill in the single-word blanks in his notes with the words he writes on the overhead. Cool teacher!!
Super boring. If you take his class, please make sure you get enough sleep before go to his class.
Cool class. Isn't hard at all, the notes are easy to follow. Test are reasonable, you just need to study the notes he gives out and answer the questions assigned. Peace-a-cake. No reason to get a good grade. He makes lectures fun.
Found it hard to stay mentally engaged because he is soooo monotone and dull, and he doesn't define his terms well. Study the notes, don't buy the book. It's a waste of $$ because the book goes into way more detail than he tests you on.
Very easy class. Just read over the notes he sells in the bookstore 2 times and you'll be fine. I got an A with very minimal work.
The notes are the thing. The class is akin to watching paint dry. Easy though, plus you get a t-shirt if you get an A.
Not interesting; you buy a package, During lecture all he does is read off the package and give you the words to fill in the blanks. don't need to attecd class as long as you can get the words to study off of. Can pass the exams by studying the package.
He was very forward with what he wants, very monotone but he has lecture notes you can buy and fill in the blanks with him in class. Just go over the questions before the test and you are bound to pass
really good and easy teacher
he's only easy if you read his lecture notes 3 times before his exams (there are 3 exams total). just buy his $20 lecture notes and dont buy the book (it's a waste of money). he's a really nice professor by the way.
If you're not a science person, take it credit/no credit, otherwise need to study a ton for lecture exams. lab easy if good with rote memorization for body parts
pretty easy class just listen to his lecture and do each section of questions in his packet before each test and you should do well. I didn't read the book and got an A
I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep in this class. Just show up, fill in the blank on your notes and pay attention in lab you should at least get an C.
very easy to pass, somewhat difficult for a B, and an A is almost out of the picture unless you have a background in Biology-which I didn't. To pass: study for the LABs, and memorize a few things during the lecture. Nice guy. But boring class, however it is an easy pass.
easy easy class! just read the notes a couple of times and you'll do very well. his exams are straight to the point. yes his lectures are boring so find a friend and exchange notes often. if you struggle in this class then science is not your thing.
Yes you don't need to attend lecture...except for the filling words, didn't get much out of the class, but did learn some interesting things when he didn't talk from the class notes. He's not that hard, don't need to read book to get a C in class. Offers extra credit questions! He tries to make some jokes, he is actually a very nice teacher! :)
Easy class, had to take during my last year when I found out I still needed to take it.
Yeah his lectures aren't the most interesting but he's very helpful and nice. Don't bother buying the book (the "interactive notes" are all you need).

I fell asleep many times in this class. i say find someone who has his notes and you don't have to go to class anymore. just read and study his notes you should be fine. but don't slack off. he covers a lot of stuff. yea...cuz all you do in class is fill
You have to have a mental handicap to not get an A or a B in this class
Filling in the blanks to notes taht are pre-made rocks! So that part of the lecture was cool. I dig the shirts her wore that matched every lesson he was teaching that day...funny!
Nice teacher;he'll notice you when you laugh at his jokes(that he tells with a straight face). I enjoyed his class, just make sure to listen as much as possible during lectures and study off the outline very well; you can get an A, no prob.
The class is a bit hard but his grading is fairly fair... it's super easy to get at least a C and if you just answer his questions on his Notes you're good... You don't even have to buy the book. However, lecture can be quite boring...
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. GOT A "B" IN HIS CLASS, VERY INFORMATIVE. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE A MORON IF YOU CANT GET AT LEAST A B ON THIS CLASS. YOU ARE JUST A SLACKER AND SHOULD EVEN BE IN COLLEGE. BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
nice professor but pretty boring. read ad study the notes. don't really need 2 go 2 class.
He's a great professor; I got a 'B' in the class. Very informative; the class can be boring at times because of the lecture notes, but they are very helpful! Students should be thankful that Dr. Owl made the studying really easy. The lab requirements are very easy as well. I recommend Andrea Araujo for the lab. See the 1st comment about her.
Easy- Just fill in the blanks in class. Read your notes a couple of times before tests. He gives extra credit too. The Lab is easy too- you just have to look at a plastic body part and name it. Just memorization. I recommend this teacher and this class. Easy GE to get out of the way.
He gives you "interactive lecture notes" that you just fill in as the lecture goes on. tests are easy (MC) and the lab is pretty easy too. I got a high B and I didn't even read the book half the time.
He provides fill-in-the-blanks lecture notes for his class to focus your studies. Very knowlegeable on subject but very boring to listen to. hard to focus on lectures when all you need to do is watch for the word for the blank.
Prof. Young Owl has a pretty good class. I really learned alot from it. The material wasnt too difficult but the class is pretty demanding if you are trying to get an A. I constantly studied for this class and I managed to pull an A. Some people don't attend class, but I would definitely recommend it. Read the book as well if you need clarification
Professor Young - Owl's class was pretty easy. He hands out "interactive lecture notes", and it basically is just fill in the blanks. At the end of each lecture, there are questions. Just answer those questions, study them, and you are basically set for the quizes and midterms. Pretty easy, however, he is really draggy, but hey, its an easy A.
Took it in summer. Super-duper easy, just fill in the blank. Exams are easy. Lab is fun. He is a very nice man. Love biology after taking this class.
He's a good if a bit slow teacher. He seems to enjoy teaching but he he's not the most exciting person I've ever met. All the same I would reccomend him because he seems to be fair.
He is pretty boring. He is very monotoned and just reads through the outlines. But it is easy. Just by the lecture notes and the bookstore and fill in the blanks. Weekly quizzes and easy as long as you read over the notes. There are study guides at end of end chpater in notes to review, they are helpful. Boring guy but take notes & its easy to pass
I don't know what people are talking about, this class is really hard. Yes there are study questions, but there are several hundred of them for each exam and there are 3 exams including the final. Yes, the labs are easy & Andrea A. is the best, but it only counts for 25%. The exams are everything & there are 50 quest, 9 points each, no partial cred
The notes are fill in the blank. Quizzes are easy, just do the questions and the book questions. Midterms and finals are...a lot of work. Basically, if you do all the questions in his study guide you'll do well. Lab was pure memorization. You cannot miss a lab.
A kind hearted man! He gives you everything you need to get an A in 208.Notes, study questions, illustrations... If you go to his office hours, he's very helpful and is willing to spend as much time needed. There are a lot of study questions, so make sure you manage you know how to manage your time.I don't regret taking 208 w/him! He's GREAT!
Dr. Young-Owl is very passionate about what he teaches. His class is easy - I didn't buy the book and got a high B. All you need are his interactive lecture notes and a great lab instructor, like Eric Zahn.
Really helpful and makes the material easy to understand.
EVERYONE! who reads this, please be aware that the prior comments are not accurate, except for the format of the course. This class is as tough as it gets and I suggest staying away from it unless you have to take the course. Exams are very difficult, even with studying. You can probably pass but if you want a good grade I dont recommend it.
Really hard class, so much memorization. 3 tests, 1 term paper. Attendance not mandatory, fill in the blank interactive notes. Seems really easy at first, but don't be fooled, the tests are SO HARD. Don't take!
Difficult class. Notes are fill in the blank which is pretty ridiculous. Quizzes every friday. You basically have to study every day to get a decent grade in this class.
So HARD, do not take. TOOO much memorization.
Absolutely Ridiculous! This class is plain and simply the worst class that I have EVER taken. Very hard on the grading, even when you study. The exams are 450 points and they are excruciating, miserable, horrible! You will study and might learn something but as far as the grade goes your screwed. Don't make the same mistake as I did..PLEASE.
Very difficult class. Requires a lot of studying and hard work. You do learn about biology but if you care about your grade I would not recommend it. Tests are HARD! He does not care about your grade, and will not give you the upper hand on the grade. I was very disappointed, because he is not a good professor. Will kill your GPA.
208 is NOT hard w/dr.young owl! For those of you who gave him a low rating, you guys need to have your IQ checked. If you don't get at least a B in his class, i hope that you guys aren't going into nursing. Yes, this class takes up LOTS of time and you will need to study for it every day, but isn't it worth the A?
This class has something to offer as far as learning goes. But what you learn does not accurately reflect on your grade. Need to be a great test-taker, know your stuff perfectly, and study more then your supposed to. Test are the majority of the grade, and people do horrible because OWL makes it to hard. He probably thinks everyone is a BIO Majo
Test are hard. He is a nice guy but not a good instructor, especially when grading. He knows tests are hard, and admits that most students know there stuff they just can't put it down on the test because it is very wordy..yet he does nothing to help you. :(
Worst class ever. Stay Away, hard tests and participation mandatory to get answers for study guide lecture notes.
This teacher sucks. I hate this class and all the stupid crap. Work your but off...and get a bad grade. It's the kind of class you try to avoid, and this is where ratemyprofess is trully helpful. Don't take his class. Stupid grading policy, tests are 500 points. How stupid? Learn a lot but get screwed on grade.
I loved Dr. Young Owl. Anatomy is not hard if you have him. I loved studying and by hearting the material in his notes. It's very beneficial for when I become a nurse. His notes has everything you need for quizzes and exams. Those people who wrote bad things were too lazy to study and should blame themselves for the fail. Dr. Young Owl rocks!
Young-Owl is awesome. yes, this class takes a lot of studying and is very time consuming. Must study everyday. Tests aren't even that hard if you study the notes he gives in class. all you need to know on the test is in the notes. i loved this class!
Horrible experience! Tests are like nightmares! Don't take this class if your are sensitive about your grade! You will waste your time as I did!
Don't take this class. You will dread it. Instructor is inconsiderate
As long as you do all the readings, come to the lectures, review the notes over and over a couple times....you are golden. People say he's hard and stuff....but at the same time...they don't put the time into studying for it. Notes are fill in the blank...have to go to class to fill them in. He tells you what to study for. Tests all scantron.
Don't take this class. He is brutal on his students with the most intensive tests imaginable. Would not recommend for any section, even though I took his 208 course.
He will destroy your grade (.) :(
This teacher is not as bad as people act like he is, the class is hard, but this teacher is as good as any. He gives you fill in the blank notes!!! How much easier can he makes it? But it is a hard class, so be prepared to study hard and have all of ur time sucked away from you
205 is a breeze compared to Bio 207 or 208. It's basically a condensed version of the two with a bit of human ecology. May be a little difficult for those who are not science, nursing, or kines majors.
He truly cares about the success of his students and his enthusiasm for the subject material is contagious. I am a nursing major that does not have a science mind whatsoever but he does everything in his power to make this class manageable. Everything is outlined for you and if you put in the time there is no reason not to pass or get an A like me!
I love Dr. Young Owl! He really helped me succeed in Anatomy. His lectures are very organized and his tests are always based on all the review questions that he assigns for our weekly quizzes. I can't thank him enough for how he helped me achieve a lot in this class!Young Owl for lec. and Kim for lab is a primo combination!
I think that overall, he's a good teacher. We got fill in the blank notes which made the class so much easier. The lectures weren't boring. He does a really good job explaining the material.
Dr. Young Owl is my favorite professor ever. The class can be boring but his grading is fair and he practically gives you everything you need to know for the tests. I loved his impressions and his love and passion for Blues music. Take him, you won't regret it!
Professor Young Owl is pretty cool. He's a nice guy who seems to enjoy what he does. In lecture your grade consists entirely of 2 midterms and the final, so do well on them! The study questions at the end of each section in his fill-in-the-blank notes are what you'll see on the test.
He's not a bad guy, but I've never had to study so much in my entire life. Texts are REQUIRED if you want to pass. Be ready to sacrifice your weekends.
You will definitely need the texts for this class. His study guides are INSANELY LONG. Lectures might get boring, but you need to be there to get the notes, unless you're doing the buddy system. Other than that, Dr. Young-Owl is AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! I think he's the funniest guy ever, but that's just me. I think he's great :)
Young Owl is one of my favorites! His quizzes(weekly), midterms(2) and final are all fill-in(no word bank), true/false, and multiple choice. The study guides are extremely helpful but are very time consuming so work the buddy system and split up the work load to make studying a bit easier. It may be a lot of work but I love his class =)
This class uses fill-in lecture notes and isn't too hard if you stay on top of the review questions for lecture and the text at the end of each section. I didn't really use the additional text book study guide and still did well on tests. Lectures may be a bit boring but Dr. Young Owl is GREAT!
YoungOwl is very nice, easy to talk to & friendly. But the class is HARD. You have to STUDY! 2 midterms & 1 final-all noncumulative. Get the txtbk! I didn't have it, and I felt like I could have gotten a higher grade if I did. He likes to joke a lot, most are funny but some are so outdated that most students don't get the references in the joke Lol
He gets 3-4 questions for his quizs at the matching/multiple choice at end of chapters, rest are from ILN study guide (quizzes out of 10 and sumtimes extra credit, could drop ur lowest 3). midterms and finals are TOUGH. he likes to be tricky with options of A, B, C, D, or A&C... Lecture isn't that bad, worry about Lab, practicums are THEWORST!
exames are hard!! Do noe take his class. The average was 60 in the midterm.
Anatomy is not an easy class. Young Owl makes it slightly bearable, but it's still difficult as all hell. There are quizes every Friday on chapters in the textbook and the lecture notes and quizes every week in your lab. So expect to be studying constantly.
Lots of info with weekly quizzes, but they do prepare you for the exams. He's a good instructor, nice person, has an off sense of humor, but that doesn't change the fact Anatomy is going to be brutal.
Quizes every Friday for lecture on top of the quizes every week for lab. Anatomy is going to be hard, but if you have the time and motivation, getting an A (or at least a B) is completely possible. Also, whatever you considered to be 'studying', throw that idea out. You'll need to be studying at LEAST 4-5 hours a WEEK for this class. It's crazy bro
Class is 75% from lecture and 25% from lab. 2 Midterms and a final in lecture, so make sure to do well on those. Lab is time consuming, there is a quiz of 20-30 terms weekly. Lecture midterms are straight from the the Fill-in-the-blank notes. Answer and study all the questions and you will ace the class. Attendance helps to understand questions.
extremely helpful and understanding. there are 3 exams and weekly quizes. study whatever workbook and/or online study guides he tells you to and you will do just fine. no papers or presentations. any extra credit comes from bonus questions on the exams/quizes.
Lecture consists of 1500 points (2 Midterms & Final worth 500pts each). Lab consists of about 500 points as well. In order to pass you need about 1350pts (Lab+Lec). Book not needed. Just answer all the questions @the end of LectureNotes before each exam. Final is NOT cumulative! Lab is pretty easy. Quizzes every time you meet.
Lectures consists of 2 exams and 1 final (500pnts each) Lab consists of about 500 points as well. In order to pass you need about 1300pts (Lab+Lec).Just buy his notes. BOOK and pearson not needed. Answers study guides in back of notes and you'll be fine.Class requires lots of studying but Credit is possible
This class is really interesting. I loved his lectures. He have the most random stories, but somehow he tries to connect it with whatever he's talking about. He is the nicest science lecture professor I've ever had! His exams? Easy- Moderate if you study. He gives out the no. of questions per body system. Quizzes? Easy. TAKE HIM!!!
2 midterms and a final worth 500 pts each. the class is difficult and requires plenty of studying and memorization. Interactive lecture notes are a must (pretty much where his exams come from) but book is also helpful.
Professor Young Owl makes anatomy a little more interesting!Quiz every Friday and they are very easy if you study his ILN notes. 2 midterms and 1 final, which are not that bad if you study his notes. I would recommend taking his class!Study really hard for labs!
Whatta bunch of whiners. Nice teacher, helpful notes and gives workbooks. Sorry, you have to study constantly in order to get a good grade in the class. Seriously, all the complainers should seriously think of dropping out of college. Save your money and go get a low skill job because college is clearly too demanding for some people's work ethic.
Books are a must- multiple study guides for one quiz (20 questions 40 points every thursday); 2 midterm/1 final- each question worth 5 points each. STUDY STUDY STUDY THE STUDY GUIDES and you should do okay. Funny guy, kinda monotoned, willing to help if you askk for it
Do the study guides. Do the study guides. Do the study guides. Everything you will be tested on is from the study guides. There are no secrets: do the study guides. A little monotonous at times, but let's be honest, it isn't easy getting stoked about robust australopithecines.
Lecture isn't mandatory but it does help and it's not too boring. He tries to make things more interesting with pictures and jokes.DO THE STUDY GUIDES at the end of the notes and you will be fine. The exams are based on the study guides. Not a hard class just requires some memorization. 3 midterms, weekly quizzes and in class assignments in the lab
DO THE STUDY GUIDES AND STUDY THE STUDY GUIDES. He is a pretty funny guy and a pretty interesting class. You must study and commit at least 2=3 days prior to the exams to study(: Not bad at all!
You're going to have to work to get an A, but it's definitely do-able. There are tests every week, but if you do the workbooks for each chapter you'll be fine. The test/quiz questions come right from the workbook. You literally have every single question that could possibly be on the test.
He gives you fill-in-the-blank notes! that was awesome! The tests are hard just because there is a lot of information to retain. The lectures are easy going and always listen for the extra credit questions.
Brilliant man, interesting subject. I lost motivation to attend class because he posts such thorough workbooks online and lecture slides that you can go over and ace the tests with. Yes, this is great, but definitely takes a lot of time to complete the workbooks and read the book. Random EC through attending class. Overall, very straight forward.
While he's a very nice man, not the most talented lecturer. It seems many anthropologists are on the eccentric side, which is fine if you teach well, but his lectures are simple (and often off topic) while his exams are dense.. Unrealistic need for memorizing to pass for a 100 level class. Even anthro majors don't memorize this content (i checked)
He Is Always Giving Extra Credit! YOU HAVE TO STUDY ALOT. He Makes Study Guides For You And The Questions From Study Guides Is On The Exam. The Class Requires You To Memorize Pictures Of The Primates For The Exams Including The Genus Names And Common Name Which Can Be Stressful Because It Over 30+ Pictures To Memorize Per Exam. He Is A Nice Prof.
Although there is a lot of material covered in his courses, he gives extra resources that are extremely helpful in reinforcing the curriculum. Tests and quizzes are very straightforward and taken directly from the study guides. I have Professor Young-Owl for two classes this semester and I will definitely try to take him again! Work hard A. :)
Professor Owl is a great professor, he gives quizzes every week which are not hard. He drops the two lowest quizzes and offers extra credit throughout the semester. The midterms and final can be tough because of the amount of information. As long as you study expect to get an A or at least a B.
If you take ANTH 435, expect to earn your grade. You actually need to read the books in order to fill out worksheets he provides, and exams are based on the worksheets. Weekly quizzes, but drops the two lowest scores. His lectures can get a little boring, but he is a funny guy.
He was pretty easy and offered plenty of extra credit. Got a B on the first test, but found out how helpful the workbooks were after. It is a lot of information, the workbooks (albeit a bit long) basically give you all the answers. I do not recommend procrastinating on them. He is very straightforward with what he wants you to know.
Weekly quizzes. All test questions come from the workbooks. If you complete all of the workbook questions then you have all the answers to the test questions. The workbooks are time consuming, but definitely worth it.
It is an easy A because he literally lectures what's on his power points. So it does get really dry and boring. There is no incentive to pay attention in class. You could not go and study the slides on your own. No point in showing up except he takes attendance when he shows a movie (2). Only one book really was used, "Who is Black".
DO THE WORKBOOKS. His workbooks from the lecture and the textbooks are crucial! If you do all of the activities (cross-word puzzles, fill in the blanks, matching) then you will do well on the tests and quizzes! He takes test questions straight from the workbooks.
Do the workbooks for both the lectures and readings to get at least a B!!!
Very good teacher. He is passionate , you can tell he knows his stuff and enjoys his job. He's always in a good mood which give people more energy. You have to do the workbook as long as you do , you will pass .they take some time but it's worth it. Over all loved the class.
Tests are difficult but manageable if you do his study packet. Lectures can be a bit dry.
He lectures from PowerPoints that are posted online and each PowerPoint has a 'workbook' basically a packet of questions that he'll use on the test. Do all the workbooks and memorize the material to pass each test. There are two midterms, the final and one activity that you do in class, the only class day you need to show up to honestly.
He lectures straight from his power points which he also posts online so going to class is not necessary. Quiz and test questions come from work books that are also posted online. Its sometimes a lot of information and can take a while to complete but they are extremely helpful for studying
This class lots of material, but as long as you go over his study guides and answer the practice exams its easy to get an A. You don't have to go to class, but sometimes he plays videos that he uses to ask bonus questions on the exams. There is only one class assignment. Also, beware that his tests do not include a word bank.
Super boring class. He comes in and starts class right on time everyday and just reads from the powerpoint. He doesn't take attendance or give any classwork. But he splits all of his tests up into part one and part two. Each part of the test is like a full test though. I love anthropology (its my major), but he makes it incredibly boring.
Dr. Young-Owl is the best professor I have ever had! I was quite intimidated by physical anthropology, but after taking a few classes with Dr. Young-Owl I felt much more comfortable and enjoyed the course. Do the workbooks, study and memorize the multiple choice and fill ins and you will have an easy time with the exams. Very interesting lectures.
Seriously one of the best professors at CSULB. He is a kind, older man who is incredibly intelligent and really cares about the students. All you have to do is complete the workbooks. They're time-consuming but if you just review them a few times, you're basically guaranteed a high A on each test. Learned so much. Would definitely recommend
The class was based off of 2 midterms, 1 final and an assignment. It was an easy class, just do his workbooks and study the questions. Those will be on the test. His lectures are very boring, and he post his PowerPoints online so you dont really need to attend except for the day you do the assignment. Other than that its an easy class
He provides so many resources online to help you succeed. Study the workbooks and study guides that he uploads - those will help tremendously on any test or quiz. I suggest buying the 2 textbooks that he requires because the quiz/quiz workbooks will be answered from those. I enjoy his lectures but if you cant make it, he puts his ppts online.
Yes, you DO need the 2 textbooks that he mentions. Whoever said that you only need the textbook titled, "Who is Black" is wrong. You also need the book by Anemone to do well on the quizzes. There are about 12 quizzes in this course in total. About 8 of the quizzes require the Anemone textbook for the answers.
Young-owl is pretty chill, boring lecturer, and reads off of powerpoints. However, quizzes and exams are base solely on the workbooks he posts online. Do them and it'll be an easy time, cause questions are picked from them. He doesn't take attendance, but show up for exams and the one exercise.
He is a very nice professor but is very boring. His lectures are dull and sometimes I believe the material he is teaching is not credible. Tests are based on power points that are not clear. He gives quizzes based on reading of the textbooks which are very hard. This class is more of a BIOLOGY class than an anthropology class.
He's a nice guy but his voice was so monotone! I would get sleep all the time. You literally can pass the class without going. All his notes are online. His test questions comes from the workbook multiple choice and T/F questions. You don't exactly need the books but if you want an A on the quizzes, sure bc they're based off the reading.
Great professor, boring/dry class. His lectures are online, so you never really need to come to class. There's a quiz online every week (worksheets posted), 3 exams and one exercise that you DO have to show up for. BUY THE BOOKS!! All the quiz/test material comes from them. Easy class if you like anthropology, but boring if you don't.
study the species like stats of athletes. 30 pgs of reading per book. show up for every class, bonus questions become available and he may let you slide. the most difficult ANTHRO course i have taken. disregard the definitions in the workbooks, questions come from the crossword and T/F section. dont take this as an elective
Amazing Professor! Loved his class
Though class but his teaching methods works!
30 question exam each week. Discussion post each week. 2 midterms + final. Let's you make up discussion posts at the end of the semester for half credit. Asynchronous so not bad.
Quizzes each week, 10 discussions and 3 midterms and final. It was an asynchronous course so it was decent as long as you do the readings and study.
