Geology, teaches you how to learn while teaching you geology, awsome instructor!
Passionate about Geology and teaches very effectively. Hands on!
Marek is so excited about geology that he actually made it fun to listen to his lectures. The field trip was entertaining, but I was barely conscious from the 8am timing :-P The tests are HARD, but easily graded so it evens out.
Mr C is fun!! He is so exciting when describing the landscapes he visited that makes the class interesting. His website is awsome! A lot of info about geology
Very enthused about geology, does an excellet job of explaining topics. Tests are all short answer written with some multiple choice, a bit on the difficult side but he grades well.
This professor loves his subject, almost too much, but in a good way. Very helpful, very clear, and teaches the material in depth. The tests can be difficult but they are graded fairly. Definately a worthwhile class and professor.

Just pay attention to lectures, and take good notes and you're good. He's really into the subject which makes it easier on everyone.
this guy is a nerd in everyway that you look at it. but he is secure in his nerdom, and as a result is extremely funny and engaging in his lectures. definitely reccommend taking this class.
Great teacher, nice, caring, really involved with work. Fascinating
he's really informative. this class isn't that hard if you show up and listen. just read the book's key points and use his notes... if you take the adjunct class, you'll get a higher grade. hey, i got a B and i'm a slacker.
"he is secure in his nerdom"--Exactly the sentence I was looking for. This guy is hella funny. A Supernerd. Finals are carbon copies of previous exams that you get to keep. He loves Geology. Mandatory field trip which is not bad. Take him. TWO T
oh yes...very hot. he's so comfortable with his "nerdiness"-it's unbelievable! really great guy though.
Easy on the nerd comments, he is just from the midwest they are all that way out there:) Easy A...stay concious and show up; sit with non-slackers and you are there. Hard not to like this course because he is so keen on geology.

He loves his job and that is what makes the class so great. He trys to relate all of geology to everyday life so that it is easier to understand, which it is. Very nerdy but that is what makes him so the class great. I would recommed him to anyone.
He's really patient with students, very, very enthusiastic and entertaining. He obviously enjoys teaching and wants to share his love of rocks with everyone. Lots of fun.
Taking this course was probably the best choice I've made so far at De Anza. He sounds sort of like Kermit the frog so that always keeps me entertained, and he cracks some jokes now and then. Go to class and know whats on his website and you will do well.
Took this Winter 2002. By far one of the best courses I have ever taken. Mr. C simply put, is a superb instructor. His explanations and lecture clarity are outstanding. The class is not necessarily a cinch, but still an excellent choice for your lab req.
Mr C is great. He loves his job. He is soo entertaning and very much into geology. I had a hard time remembering all the info, but I went to his office hours a lot and he was very willing and very helpful. This class was so much fun and interesting.
I was not that impressed. Yes, he knows his stuff and presents it clearly. But he really over does what is expected and he is SO anal. He is so pleased with himself that he loses sight of what is needed for his class. Parts of his tests are kinda weird.
if geology was an interesting subject, i would LOVE this class. but he made it somewhat interesting. he's a cool guy. yes, nerdy. but not in a bad way. i got a B, but just listen to the lectures carefully and read the book. the test format is pretty easy.
I don't think geology is that interesting, but Professor Cichanski makes it fun and exiting. He really loves rocks and wants his students to enjoy them as well. He's very enthusiastic about teaching and is very, very patient. He's also really hot!
This guy is great. His teaching style is so clear and easy to understand, and he uses pictures constantly to help describe things. To complemment that, he loves his work and his jokes come from a angle that is hilarious. You gotta get this guy. Great class, and chicks dig his adventures he tells.
If you ask me, this guy is WAY too interested in rocks, but it makes the class not so boring. His lectures were easy to understand because he explains it very well. Overall he's a good teacher, but study hard for that final! It's harder than his usual tests and very detailed!
DUDE! This guy rocks (pun so not intended). He is very good at teaching his subject; he makes rocks somehow very exciting. Also, his Kermit the Frog voice makes every lecture fun.
His enthusiasm carries over and is infectious. This could be dull class, and he knows it, but Dr C. plays up on the geek angle to keep it accessible. An easy B but you have to know your stuff to get an A
One of the finest teachers I've had. Very stimulating course, probably because he is so passionate about it. Respectthe guy because he is very dedicated and works hard to teach. Wants to challenge the students but also wants them to learn. Makes the subject very fun and interesting.STUDY STUDY STUDY
Enthusiasm oozes out of him. He really loves his subject. Kudos, Dr. C.The lecture on caves was the best lecture I've seen. Truly inspiring. Enjoy his class while you can because you will wish all your future teachers will have the same love and passion for teaching like he has. Rock on, Dr. C.
Mr. Cichanski is very helpful, and open to clarify and problem you might have. He makes the class funny, and interesting as possible, after all is a class about rocks, so imagen how hard is to make rocks look pretty. He has a good grading system which make it easy to get a good grade.
He takes a "dry" subject and makes it interesting. His lectures move quickly and at the same time he explains difficult concepts using analogies and illustrating them with real life stories. The lab section is difficult but it reinforces ideas that you learn from the book. The tests and quizes are moderately difficult. Take class before he leaves!
Mr.C is the best science teacher I've ever had. First I thought I would die of rock, but now I regreat that I take P/NP. His grading system makes the score pretty. He is really willing to help, leading you to think logically, so you don't really need to cram the terms since you know how it works. Highly recommend experience such an awsome teacher.
DUDE I NEVER SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN MYSELF INTO BUSINESS CLASSES. SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GEO MAJOR!!

GREAT TEACHER
Really nice guy, but jumps around a lot and is kind of hard to follow. However he is willing to help if you don't understand. He is very enthusiastic about rocks and that helps the class go by pretty quickly, but the class is still just about rocks. You could do worse but if you can take a different science class, do.
The class was a little boring, but Cichanski is really cute and he somehow makes it kind of interesting. Not all the lectures were boring, just a lot of the labs, which are really long and he's alittle cheap on giving a intermission during class. But he's an overall nice guy and is really willing to help you out with whatever you need help with.
a nice guy but that doesnt change the fact that geology is boring as hell
dr c is nice, smart, helpful, cute-nerdy. i thought his class was pretty interesting, he makes up funny analogies! he takes roll by seat chart, u need to show up(on time mostly too) the labs are ok. dont turn anything in. u really gota study for those exams. ESPECIALLY THE FINAL! but he drops lowest exam & lab quiz scores. recommended. i got a B!
nice professor, hard class
mr. C is the worst teacher ever! haha jk! he's really helpful and super nice.. and very cute i must say :]
awesome. Mr. C is a total crackup. He's so into geology and he's for real. mdeffinitely reccomend this course. tests cover lecture material more than reading so you have to attend class :)
I love him!!! He is one of the funniest professor!!! very knowledgable, clear and organized. As long as you take good notes and revise, you will be fine! afterall, paying attention in lectures and labs is the MOST important thing!!!MISSING HIM >3<
Class is interesting but going to labs is horrible. His tests are mainly on lecture &lab so you have to attend class. His tests are hard but he gives you half credit for the problem that you missed so it doesnt affect your grade too badly. His tests are hard because he really wants you to understand the concept of whatever he is teaching.nice & funny
By far one of the best teachers I have ever had. I am not really interested in geology but his enthusiasm made me want to learn about rocks.
Geology + Nerd = Mr. C, I mean that in a good way. Totally in to what he does, and gets bonus points for that. Tries to relate to us non-geeks which makes him a hoot. Moderatly difficult tests, just skim reading and pay attention to lecture. Leaniant grading structure, if you answer every question wrong you would leave the class with a 50%.
Mr. C is a good guy and knows sooo much about geology. gives great examples and always a good laugh when in class. take this class if you want a fun science class.
He's a really good teacher, but you have to make sure you do your work and read the book. I ended up with a B b/c I was too lazy. Don't slack off or you'll get behind. Geo trip was fun. Tests are pretty tough, but he gives partial credit. Labs are fun. You have to hella study if you want an A and go to class.
Dr."C" is such a hoot!! I really enjoy his lectures, very very passionate about his work. His exams are pretty challenging..just show up and read the book..he has a lot of helpful information on his website..including his version on how to take notes and study for exams, which has improved my habits 10 fold..Thanks Dr. "C"
I don't even take Geology, but he teaches the class before mine. A couple times I've come in early to hear the end of his lectures. His enthusiam really does make geology interesting. He seems very helpful, too. I plan on taking it next quarter even though I already fulfilled my science requirements. Oh.. and he is VERY easy on the eyes. ;) Yum!
take john cook at all costs!
He makes sure u understand. no tto mention he is clear enough. u wont even feel like ur in a class, this guy is so funny, that youd think that your in some stand-up comedy bar. in his class,u would [unintetionally] listen to every word he says, so u wont miss a single joke he says. every single day is better than the day before. GET HIM NOW!
The jury is still out on him for me. He's sort of harder than he needs to be, but he's a nice guy, and his labs are pretty bearable. His class is difficult b/c you have a test or quiz every other week- 3 tests and 4 lab quizzes. Hardest part is keeping up w/ studying. Not sure I recommend wholeheartedly, but I can see why he's well liked.
C's class pretty fun if geology a subject you enjoy. exam are moderately easy and it is based on the lecture. If you take detail notes and PAY ATTENTION during lecture, then it is very possible you will pass this class with at least a B w/o reading the text, which is very boring. Overall great teacher, boring subject, easy exam/final (basic stuff).
Hez great! He made this boring subject a great pleasure. For a while I even considered to change my major to geology. lol Well, just got an A from him, Not an easy A though. You needa study and pay attention to get it. Not recommended if u want an easy A. But if you wanna learn something withh fun, choose him and u won't regret!
neat guy! loves to teach, very clear. he really loves geology. definitely need to study for tests, but he teaches well and is VERY willing to help you and approachable. don't need to read txt, but helps for when you need to look up terms and diagrams.
I couldn't believe that this teacher made the study of rocks interesting.... Hard tests, great teacher!
funniest lecture ever, he makes me laugh all day long. recommand for people who wish to learn geology. but not an easy A class.
His lectures are really funny, makes you laugh all the time, he teaches everything very thorugh, just take notes and study and you have an A. lab quizzes are a lil difficult, bcuz you gotta memorize the rocks, but thats about it
Very enthusiastic about geology. Good at explaining tough concepts with accessible metaphors. Always willing to explain in more depth during office hours. Lowest of three tests is dropped, as is lowest of four lab quizzes. One required weekend field trip. No papers or projects. Easy A or B if you attend class and do the reading.
sooo his lectures are soo boring, he tries to be funny and at first he is, but after a while it gets annoying. THE LAB SUCKS its too long, and boring, the weekend field was a waste of my saturday. he can be interesting but he puts me to sleep and his tests are hard!
He's a pretty good teacher and very interesting, but if you don't like geology, you'll still be bored. His labs are extremely long and boring, but he drops the lowest test and lowest lab quiz. Don't get the wrong impression because he's not easy, but he's not extremely hard.
Mr. C is a stud! He's a big dork but it's so adorable and he's very passionate about geology, it's really refreshing. You basically need to attend class, take notes, go to lab, and study. I barely even used the text book- mostly just to look up vocabulary. Flashcards really help. He drops your lowest quiz and test, so somehow I ended up with an A!
Influenced by the teaching styles of personalities like James Burke, Alton Brown, and Bill Nye, Dr. C is entertaining, funny, and informative. His tests are designed to test your understanding, not just your memorization skills. His web site has sample exams. Be quiet, pay attention in class. If you get less than a B, you did it to yourself.
Mr. C is your averge cute nerd.. He looks exactly like one of the guys from "Stepford Wives" it's hilarious.. He's extremely passionate about rocks.. he loves Death Valley and he's just an overall funny guy.. I think he talks to himself sometimes, or maybe to the rocks o.O ? Lectures are ok (I took a few naps) and labs are more interesting but thre
Not your average scientist... Very charismatic. Entertaining. Always willing to help/make accomodations for students. Very approachable. Cute. If you aren't a geology buff, but need to satisfy a general ed req., take Geology 10 with Marek Cichanski! He may not change your mind about Geology, but I guarantee he'll make the class fun.
I took this class to fill up my schedule, and now I'm thinking of becoming a geology major. The way he can make science concepts seem crystal clear to people without a science background is admirable. Easy tests, he gives partial credit, and he makes ROCKS seem like the most exciting things. Tries soo hard, it's cute.
Great teacher. Genuinely interested in teaching his subject, and tries to make things fun. Sometimes he dumbs things down a bit too much as if you were in elementary school though. The lab is mostly boring but I don't think that's really his fault. Overall he's a much better teacher than most.
SUPER nice! loves his rocks. and such a HOTTIE! hottest teacher i ever had
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Yes he's interesting, yes he's funny. HIS EXAMS ARE RIDICULOUS. Their wording is almost incomprehensible and theres more vocabulary than any science class I've been in. Out of 21 academic classes so far, this is the one that's had both the most studying and least amount of practicality. LIKE I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT APHANITIC ROCKS.
Really great teacher that TRULY loves everything to do with geology. Is very funny and honestly cares about his students learning all the material. Definitely would recommend him.
He is a great and funny teacher. Genuinely passionate and interested in geology. He tries to make things fun and gets a little over-excited sometimes. He dumbs things down a bit too much, but it makes learning easy and the topics are clear. The lab is boring but how exciting can rocks be? He's a better teacher than most and keeps things interesting
really coool teacher! love this dude! hella funny!
He is funny and comprehensible. Some times he get over excited about his stuff and experiences. Over All I will recommend him to take Geo with
everything is laid out clearly. this isn't like organic chemistry. up to date on points and available to ask questions
Extremely enthusiastic teacher with a good sense of humor. Mr. Cichanski (pronounced SEE-CHAN-SKI), is genuinely interested in the subjects he teaches and is very fair when it comes to grading exams. I highly recommend this nerdy man of science.
Love him. He's explains things in a way that the students can understand; and He's really enthusiastic about what he teaches. Pay attention to his lectures because most of the things he lectures about are on the tests. He emails a practice test before each test. Final is accumulative. Cherry on Top: I thought he was Hott in a weird dorky way
i love him!!!!!!!!!
GREAT TEACHER! Notes are super clear with amazing pictures. He really know how to force that information into your brain. He is a nerd but really funny. I LOVE HIM! Definitely take his class.
Great teacher. One of the best I've had at DeAnza. Loves what he's teaching & shows some really neat videos & examples. If you're a visual learner, I definitly recommend his teaching style. I just took notes & did his practice tests online & got an A/B on all 3 tests. Really nice& doesn't mind answering questions.
He is the most helpful teacher I have ever had! I absolutely love his teaching method. He has three midterms and three lab quizzes and drops lowest ones. His midterms are graded on a partial credit system so there is no such thing as a wrong answer!! His office hours are very beneficial as well. This class requires a bit studying and memorizing
cool guy, interesting enough course. however, sometimes i felt that SOME of the questions on his exams were random. you really do need to study hard/memorize to do well in this class. got a B, but i was trying for an A ;(
This guy is awesome, his lectures are entertaining and he sounds like Ernie from sesame street! Don't even get me started on the nerdy geeky hotness factor.
Prof. C is a man who loves teaching and, more importantly, loves what he teaches. I never wanted to miss a moment of his class and am sad it's coming to an end. I would take any class he taught in any subject. You will learn a lot and enjoy the ride.
Never in my life have i met a teach so passionate about what he teaches then Cichanski, and all the passion rubs off on every student. he makes rocks interesting and his high nerdy energy keeps you entertained. i will defiantly take him for another class. if your interested in taking a geology class, Cichanski is your man
I love the way Mr. C teaches, he loves to teach & best of all, he loves what he teach. His lectures are interesting and he is great at explaining different scenarios to help you get a better understanding. He's very passionate about his job, that's what makes the class fun(:
he is funny in class, and makes astronomy interesting. his lectures are crystal clear because he explains AND demonstrates in class. I love the way that he makes everyone remember key points of the subject by doing goofy things in class. he is very passionate about this subject, and is generous in grading. i love his class.
I loved his class, the subject in general is not that easy... but he makes it easier to understand because he really gets into his lectures, and his grading is fair. I took him a year ago so I don't remember how much the textbook was incorporated into the class, but I remember I didn't have to buy one.
DO NOT leave De Anza without taking this class.
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!! You tricked me into expecting a hot professor to crush on and on the first day I walk in greatly disappointed/appalled. WHO said he was hot?! He's OCD, talks to himself, wears slippers with dress attire/socks, AND he's SO verbose. It took him forever to say he'd be going through the attendance list in alphabetical order! CRAP
One of the best teachers I have ever had. EASY A+. He gives you practice tests, study guides, and in class easy-to-understand diagrams that will prepare you for each test. Very nice, funny, and never boring. He runs the planetarium machines to send you right out into the universe to understand his lecture. GREAT teacher!
Mr. C is one if not the most easiest science teachers of De Anza. No essays, no classwork, no Homework, just 3 midterm and one final into a bucket of points which will calculate your final grade. Multiple choice, 1 short answer. His lectures are crystal clear. He may seem like he is repeating himself several times hence it will boring at times.
Dr. C is amazing! He's like this awesome mix of Kermit the frog and Bill Nye the Science Guy! He's super nice and helpful, and he makes hard material easy and fun to learn. His passion for Science will make you want to switch your major!
Pretty interesting class if you're into stars and planets and all that jazz. The subject is actually really hard. I didn't buy the book but I managed to get at least a B on all of the exams. Study and look at the practice tests! At least 2-3 of the questions from the practice tests are reused on the exams.
this teacher is hard but if you work really hard an A is possible. you have three tests and three quizzes and he drops one from each. so if you mess up once that grade will be dropped. i liked this class.
He is amazing, super passionate and helpful. Not like other astronomy class, his lecture is clear and well-prepared. stay till the end of the class plz. cuz im not a science person, im here for fulfilling my ge class, but i learned a lot, seriously.
Loved this class. He may not be for everyone, but he is nerdy in a wonderful way, and he made geology extremely interesting and memorable. I can definitely understand how someone would major in Geology after taking his class. Take it. It's easy, informative, and entertaining. Loved the field trip!
Don't let the glasses and socks/sandals combo fool you, ladies! Mr. C is a huge science geek and he's not afraid to share his passion for astronomy with his students. His lectures can be a little dry and he sometimes goes off on little tangents, but he presents the material in a clear, interesting manner. Exams are easy, just study the What2Know!!
I absolutely love him!he's very clear with his material and makes the class interesting & fun by showing how passionate he is about the subject.he we need more teachers like him, who are truly passionate about the subjects they teach, and not just see it as a job.if you ask him to get his scopes out he might do it,& its fun looking through them!
He is a good professor because he is knowledgeable and passionate in this topic.
Seriously love this guy. He is so passionate about astronomy that it makes you passionate about it too. He just really wants you to understand the material and learn it, and has the most amazing teaching methods. The tests are so easy to study for and it is one of the best classes I have ever taken. He is an amazing professor.
he is very knowledgable and because of this, it makes easier for the student. the class is always lecture, no group work, except if you take lab. he always gets to the bottom of things and he makes sure that people get one thing before he moves on to the next thing. I recommend you take this class, you'd be surprised to what you don't know.
He is SO funny and entertaining, does a great job of explaining things in a way we can understand. Very passionate about what he teaches. Puts together a list of things you should know for the test. This is my FAVORITE class! (Don't have any food/drink out in the Planetarium, though. He WILL find you, haha)
I absolutely love this class! He is very passionate about what he teaches and is super entertaining. He refers to himself as a fuddy duddy, lol! He has a what to know page for the 3 midterms and 1 final, so you're never surprised, just study it, also I had an old edition of the text and still did great on tests! Highly recommend this teacher!
Dr. C is an EXTREMELY knowledgeable professor. I mean seriously, this guy is like a human google. If you ask him anything about anything he'll probably have an answer.Tests aren't bad at all if you study. Now whenever I am outside, I will be forced to try and name the rocks that I see. Dr. C is highly recommended!
Mr. Cichanski is the most passionate astronomy teacher one could ask for. He has a really dorky and amusing sense of humor, but the guy is just adorable and he makes you care for the subject. This class exercises certain imaginative capabilities of your mind which is great, and it's fun being in the planetarium. Take the class, you won't regret it.
Has a great multiple choice test where each letter option has a numerical grade. No penalization for wrong answer. Takes some questions from practice test & test material is ONLY from SPECIFIC areas in study guide. Even tells you the extra credit material. I took the class with a diff. teacher and failed my first test, got an A with this teacher!
The best professor I've ever had. Easy class as long as you attend. Didn't study even a little but I'm a science major so don't follow my example. Point is, super easy class if you pay attention. Textbook is pretty cool, too.
This class was definitely one of my favorites! I wouldn't recommend taking it in the morning though - trust me, you will be very, very tempted to fall asleep in his class. Professor Cichanski is very passionate about what he teaches, and his jokes can be quite funny.. sometimes. His tests are really easy if you pay attention! Take this class!
One of the most passionate professors I've ever seen. His obsession with astronomy makes the class more interesting than ever. You get to learn a lot in his class, and his partial credits help pretty much.
He is extremely passionate with astronomy and knows what is he teaching. As long as you attend his class, read the textbook, and use the practice exams, you can get an A.
Professor C really knows his stuff and he is very passionate too. There are 10 labs and they are all easy as long as you are present in class. Don't be afraid to ask for help because he always there to help and easily give the answers to questions students are stuck on. Definitely a great class!
Don't take this class unless you are truly interested in hearing stories about rocks and metaphors comparing rocks to people... Extremely boring. Also, if you're bad at multiple choice, don't take this class!
His class is easy IF you attend class every day (attendance is not mandatory), take good notes, use his study guides online, and ask when you have questions (he is super friendly). Basically, if you don't slack off, an A is pretty easy since he curves the tests. He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches & is willing to help you.
He's funny in a nerdy way, which I like! He is very passionate about geology and teaches the class very well. Pay attention in class and study before tests to receive an A. You get 3 tests (which he curves) and he drops the one with the lowest scores, same with your lab quizzes. Then there is a cumulative final. Easy class if you put effort in.
Very passionate and geeky, which means he will always be there to answer any questions you have. The only problem is that sometimes he treats you like you're 10 and can wind on and on in his lectures and instructions. Showing up to class and taking notes is not enough. You NEED NEED NEED to do his study guides. All-in-all, great guy and teacher.
Really awesome teacher, he's one of those teacher that makes you interested in the subject. It made me think, "Should I change my major to Geology!?" while taking his class, he makes it sound so exciting. He's passionate about what he teaches. To get an A in his class: GO to class and STUDY, and you'll be fine. I would take his classes again.
He is the one of the nicest teachers I met during recent years. I was so tired to take 21 units in this fall quarter. At the end of his lab quiz 3, I almost failed to draw a cross section. When I asked him what I can do to solve the mess I drew on the test paper, he was willing to provide me with a new one to allow me redid the quiz!
Mr. C is really passionate about Geology and he really makes the class fun. he loves to teach geology and it shows. Try to go to his office and feel free to ask him any questions. His testes are difficult but he drops one quiz and one tests, there are 3 tests and 3 quizzes. Overall it was a good class with a cool professor.
Mr. Cichanski is a great teacher, I highly recommend him. Very helpful, funny, and you can get an A if you just go to class and spend enough time studying for the tests and quizzes.
A great professor. Doesn't waste time going over irrelevant things, makes sure everything he explains is as clear as possible, has a voice you can actually understand and not fall asleep to, cracks jokes I really enjoy. He is himself all the time and is a great example too. His tests are easy as long as you study. He gives you all material to study
Three exams, (TF, matching, multiple choice), one final and he drops the worst of the three. Every answer is given credit, ex: right answer 5 points, next right answer 3.5 points. He forces you to think vs memorization. If you need a physical science wo lab, this is the one. Also, phenomenal presentations and informative and funny lectures.
OH MY GOODNESS!! I would take his class again! This was my 1st college class outta HS & it was a great experience overall. I did the recommended reading before every class so that the lectures would refresh my memory. U should study the study guides religiously! His lectures don't put u 2 sleep, the field trip was very fun. Labs are hands-on :)
Dr. C is extremely dedicated and passionate professor. His lectures are interesting and his tests are fairly easy. He puts up the study guide on his website and if you know the materials based on the study guide, you should be good. The field trip was fun too! My advice is to take notes during his class and ask him questions if you're confused.
Fantastic teacher, one of my favorites in the whole college, so interesting I looked forward to class every morning at 8:30 am If you want to know how and why we are here take it, it a life changer and he is funny and tells great stories to help you understand his ideas. Would take again like a shot!!!
SUPER BORING. half of the class would be sleeping before the half of the time would pass. talks in a monotone and expects all to be astronauts in the future. you need to do make you on notes from the book because he doesn't do power points. I DO NO RECOMMEND AT ALL .
Great teacher, with entertaining lectures. He makes things interesting because he is passionate about his field of study. Wish I had shown up to more classes, the exams are fair as long as you read.
Come to class, listen to his lectures and it should be an easy A. He's great at lecturing and you can tell he is really passionate about what he teaches. No homework, 3 tests with the lowest dropped. I barely studied and I have gotten a 95, 99, and 92! Love Mr. C AND his class.
Marek is a wonderful professor. 3 midterms, drops the lowest one and 1 final. If you pay attention and take notes you will do great on his exams. His lectures are also very interesting and go by very fast. Wish I had attended more of the lectures because he's super passionate about astronomy and makes class enjoyable.
I don't recommended anyone taking this class. Really boring lectures and you are stuck for 3 hours for lab staring at rocks and maps. How fun!
Not sure if he's different in geology, but he was quite boring in astronomy, so not sure what all the fuss is about. I kept falling asleep so I eventually stopped showing up to lecture and started studying myself. However, he makes it very clear what you are going to be tested on, so I do respect him for that.
Incredibly enthusiastic about teaching geology and getting others interested in geology. He provides a clear guideline about what will be on the test and gives you all the opportunities to get an A. The amount of reading assigned was too much compared to what was on the test but this is understandable. Read and follow his outline and you will pass.
I dont know why he has an overall of 4.3, he surely deserves a 5. He is an awesome teacher. Show up to class and pay enough attention and you will do good. Tests are pretty easy as long as you remember key concepts of lectures. I would definitely take him again.
Most contagiously enthusiastic professor I have ever taken a class with. I feel I can never get bored talking to him about anything subject related or not. Very clear explanations with goofy but helpful diagrams and drawings, very straightforward with what's coming in exams and a 10/10 teacher all-around.
his enthusiasm for the astronomy is infectious and i found his lectures about the universe interesting. 3 tests and a final. he always gives a list of what to study for and you even get half credit for wrong answers so you can't really blame him if you fail. the only con was that the class was 7:30-8:20am M-F but it was still worth taking for sure
I personally thought he was funny, and he lectures with some pictures so it's a good idea to take notes. His tests are straightforward and easy in my opinion. I would look over the practice test heavily to prepare for tests. I even didn't come for 2 weeks so it isn't hard. I really did enjoy this class. He hates when you go on your phones.
if you don't like long irrelvant lectures. DO NOT take this class. I took this class for GE and i love astronomy. Marek made me hate it. His lectures are long and boring and have barely anything to do with the tests. His tests are opinion based. 3 tests. 1 final. no homework ever but the tests are very questionable.
This is not an easy A class. Check out his website to find "what to know list".
Such an inspirational, passionate professor! Really cool, interesting lectures. I definitely recommend for GE, have taken him twice--for lab as well. The class is very straightforward and there's always a study guide. 3 tests and a final and no homework.
I love this professor's lectures! He is very knowledgeable. He is very professional, always makes his classes very organized. Start class and end class on time. Every lecture's topics are very clear, interesting and motivating. He is super nice! I am sure I will select his class again in the future. His class is worth taking, won't let you down.
Extremely bad online class! A lot of hard homework which cant find out the online answer. I took to GE requirements but it seems pull down my grades. He does as if there is only his class to study! Dont recommend this class. Ill give 0 if there were. Awful
He is an good instructor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and his grading criteria is clear. He gives three quizzes and three tests and drops the lowest quiz score and the lowest test score. I highly recommend taking his class to fulfill the science requirement, especially if science is not your strongest subject.
I felt the discussions were tough gradedI never got good scores. The reading modules are easy and the quizzes require a lot of effort. The midterms and finals feel like there isn't enough time but in the end he curves it. I thought Astronomy would be an easy GE but this one definitely required a lot of work.
I loved taking Mr. Cichanski's class, he was spectacular. It's fairly easy as long as you do the work, he recognizes the effort. In the beginning, it's graded by few assignments and lots of quiz categorized hw so my grade wasn't as good, but I asked him if he would maybe offer extra credit and he did and was so helpful! You really can't fail tbh.
I usually don't come here and write a review but this teacher is way too much for an online class! I have no background knowledge on this subject and taking his online class is the worst! some instructions were too complicated to understand. He is a super tough grader! Every week discussion post no one scored a perfect score.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I decided to take this class for my GE requirement but he is way too hard, such a tough grader. It's only pulling my grade down when I thought it would be an easy class. He is very old school, will not give you extensions, and is not there to help his students out.
Too passionate about the subject for it being a GE course
I really wish I never took his class....... I am a straight A student and I am on the edge of getting B! because he doesn't have B+, A-. you either A or B. I don't know what I would do if I get a B. He is very not helpful at all to his students. His grading requirement is also different from what he stated. He is nice but not a good teacher.
Literally regret taking this class, worst online class ever. Isn't helpful to his students. Answers are not clear or easy to find, don't waste your time taking his online or in class
Easy A class if you show up, or if you study on your own. He is very, very boring in class and I took the two hours and fifteen minute class and I stopped showing up after the first two weeks. No homework, his tests have a lot of hidden hints, and if he repeats something in the lecture it'll definitely be on the test.
Professor Cichanski is a wonderful professor. He puts a lot of effort into his online course, more than other professors I've taken online so far. He gives his lectures online for each week and has these 'mini quizzes' for each section of the chapter so you can process it right away. There is also an emphasis on weekly discussions with classmates.
His grading criteria are all over the place. And then when he does have clear grading criteria, he doesn't follow it! He changes due dates randomly and never grades fairly. I do not recommend this class for anyone who's expecting their professor to grade them based on reasonable criteria.
talks so much. so much videos to watch and so much to read on your own. Too many quizzes. Grade super carefully and tough. Might be fun if you took him as an Astronomy major cuz he's super passionate. Don't take if you are just interested in Astr because he might ruin it. I regret taking his class because I wished it was more interesting.
So difficult for someone who takes this lab with their first astronomy class. Very difficult and long lab sheets every lab. You complete them with a partner with laptop programs which he vaguely explains. Boring lab hours. Never got an A in lab. Final exam super hard - no cheat sheet. he uses old programs that are impractical. So much headache
while his jokes and analogies may be somewhat... silly, he's a caring and enthusiastic guy. his excitement is contagious and i found myself enjoying all of his classes. index card cheat sheet on all lecture tests, and on the final you could use an entire sheet of paper, front and back! required knowledge for each test is on his website too!
Each lab has an assigned aspect of astronomy to cover, labs can vary in difficulty from easy to really hard. Most of the time I've finished early and still received an A on the assignment. Labs are done in a "group" and Dr. Cichanski walks around to help if you're stuck or confused. I've received an A on every lab and this is a new subject
He has a unique teaching style that leads you to think not just to copy and paste the information on the textbook to the quiz or exam but since this is a GE class, there are too much homework per week. Also, on the exam, you would never see the same question on your textbook nor your weekly quiz and activities. He always twists the question bit
Took last quarter (online) & was easy! There's weekly modules & activities; each comes with ?s kind of like mini "quizzes" but easy! Also weekly discussion to post in (2 posts minimum) & you can post about any astronomy topic. One midterm, one final. Free textbook. Make sure to read the chapters b/c a lot of memorization. He always replies back!!
Was going to give him like a 6 but then I reread the syllabus and notice he put that even if ur in the hospital or sum its ur responsibility to do the work and that if u don't do it u get a 0 like ??? the audacity does more work to avoid doing certain work learn more from reading than lectures need to read/notes to pass hard assignments
He is an amazing teacher and he replies to emails in a few hours. If you do everything in small bites, getting an A shouldn't be too difficult. It is a good amount of work to get an A but not the "stressful pop quiz" kind of work.
This class is literally so free. The only thing you have to do is actually read the textbook and get answers from there and think a little bit about his activities. 1 midterm + 1 final worth 15% each. You get half back for wrong answers on tests. Nothing to worry about though, there's so much extra credit and his discussions are gold mines for EC.
By far best class I have taken at De Anza. I have not taken any other Astronomy classes but I would bet Cichanski is the best out of them all. Plenty of extra credit and lots of time to complete assignments. Just beware of deadlines and make sure you schedule times to study. Lectures are awesome and podcast level. All assignments are high quality!
Extremely boring course. He gave annoying assignments and weekly discussion. He has a lot of onerous requirements in many unnecessary places. He gave lots of reading and videos, and some of his test questions are really naive and useless. Basically, It's a professor who thinks he's a real astronomer.
Prof. Cichanski is so sweet! You can tell he really cares about the subject and wants you to pass, he offers a lot of extra credit at the end. His lectures really broke up my day, he's passionate but relaxed enough to not feel like you're cramming information. If you do the hw on time and study you'll do awesome!
Amazing experience with Mr C. I actually enjoyed learning about astronomy. Assignments are straight forward, he gives good explanation for everything. 2 to 3 extra credit opportunities!
he's sweet + wants you to pass but lectures are boring. lots of hw but you can find a lot of answers (+ exam questions) online. gives enough extra credit assignments to make up an entire midterm/final. 2-3 discussion posts a week but can get easy extra credit from it. every week is the same amount of work (reading questions, activities, lectures).
Labs were on canvas, he'd lecture for 1/2 an hour before giving you 3 hours to finish the lab. You could reasonably just not show up to class, but then you lack his help on labs if you need it. He offers an EC lab and one final multiple-choice test. I recommend taking another ASTR class either concurrently or as a prerequisite :) Great class!
I took this class Fall 2022 but kept forgetting to write a review until now. I took this class as an asynchronous course, it was amazing. Quizzes were open-book, so there were a lot of opportunities to learn. I felt that I learned a lot in this class, and Prof seemed genuinely passionate about the subject and like he wanted students to learn.
Best. Professor. Ever. He genuinely cares about the subjects he teaches and his students. I learned more from his class than from every other class I took combined. Lots of extra credit, you can't fail even if you aren't good at science. I looked forward to watching his lectures; they never were boring. His passion for science is contagious.
I don't know why are there so many positive reviews, this is one of the worst classes I have ever taken in my life. NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to get a A, Each quizzes score in class is a average 18-20/25. Midterm Score in class is a average of 100/150, and this is even a TBA class. No curve, I studied really hard on the midterm and only scored a 110/150.
Do not take this if you want to have a 10 page study guides. His exams are not for students who are taking astronomy as a GE.
Professor Cichanski's ASTR004 class is a mixed bag. While the lectures are engaging, the grading can be confusing. However, the class has plenty of extra credit opportunities, and tools like unstuck ai can help with study prep. Overall, it's a decent GE course if you stay on top of the work.
Very sweet, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, funny instructor. Lectures are long but very engaging, informative, & clear. Lots of visuals and analogies, always tries to make the concepts digestible. MCQ tests with partial credit, what2know list always provided. Definitely be there & take notes & utilize the what2know list. Love his class, I recommend
Prof Cichanski is very passionate about his subject, he tries his best to make the course interesting. Graded via lecture and lab tests(37.5%,18.6%), plicker questions, which you get by showing up(6.5%) and the final(37.4%). Lecture tests and the finals are all mcq with an extra credit question. I wouldnt discourage you from taking this course.
I took the class for fun and loved it. It was very easy. To get an easy A, all you have to do is: - go to every lecture - arrive on time (important) - pay attention; don't surf net or play with phone - read the assignments - participate in each lab class There is no homework - just the reading assignments. I got 95% or better on each test.
