fun teacher, never boring moment. talks about real life senerios
she sucks she assigns 1 project that is the majority of your grade
SO MUCH WORK, THIS IS NOT THE REAL WORLD YET but she thinks it is. Nice woman, knows her stuff, but gives so much work that it will make you regret taking the class. Not clear with notes, or exams or quizzes.
Overall I thought it was a good class. You just have to get into the swing of her class, quizes easy, unclear at times. But don't be afraid to email or go to her office for help. Wants to see how much effort you put in it. Wants to challenge you
No Comments
very enthusiastic, will try to scare you off first day, but very personable and approachable, definitely knows her stuff
she is a great teacher, definately prepares you for later courses, will always return phone calls and is willing to help. Quizzes are from her notes, and tests are a little more detailed but not impossible. Her projects are very creative and useful. fun
She was scary, she gave lots of work, but she is nice, helps you so much, knows her stuff, and wants you to pass. Respect her, listen, and you will do fine. Perhaps one of the more intelligent professors here at Towson.
intimidating at first, but she's a very good teacher- knows her stuff... a lot of work, but the class is very beneficial to PR majors
Very Standoffish!!! Has a mean streak that is a little bit of a front, but leaves you with a bad taste. Helpful to certain students, but doesn't react well to opinions/viewpoints outside of her own.
Possibly the worst teacher at Towson. Has no clue how to maintain order in her own class. Rants constantly about nonsense that is only amusing to her. Annoying, close-minded, and extremely fake. Someone please fire her.
Whoa! Back off. If you do your work, and pay attention, you will at least pull of a B. She is a tough teacher, is very stubborn, BUT has much to offer, will help you anytime, and will stay in contact with you to help you in future classes.
Expects a lot from her students, but very good teacher; has had experience in real world; extremely helpful outside of class; gives enough work to keep you busy but if you keep up with it there is no problem; very clear about what she expects
It is hard to explain but she is a no nonsence instructor, expects a lot of work but she gives ample time to do the assignment, the tests and quizzes are difficult. The overall class is okay, she's very knowledgable but lacks in people skills.
Shes tough and expects a lot of work but is a great teacher. really gives you hands on experience if your interested in PR. If you can handle the work its worth taking her.
She is a good teacher, but you better be prepared to work HARD. Her tests are HARD her assignments are ok and the final campaign is tedious!

very very very very hard class!! she's a nice lady and assigns a lot of work, but if you're willing to do it, it's worth it.
Very hard teacher. U will learn a lot, but be prepared to work a whole alot. Knows what she is talking about, but the work can be intense. Proceed with caution when takin her.
Meg Algren is great! She was a hard teacher but you will learn so much from her. If you do your work and want to learn then she will see that and youll do well! If your up for a challange def take her, it will pay off!
She is fully commited to her PR career and holds you to the same high standards. Not a cake-walk-class at all. Heavy work load and intense reading. Full of modern industry PR information - she knows it all

This class is a lot of work, but it isn't as hard and impossible as people make it out to be. Just go to class, do the work and study before the quizess and tests. She is a very sweet and funny lady, and she really wants you to learn what she's teaching.
I love this class, not only is it fun, but you learn a lot. She doesnt actually hold class very often, just make sure to do your work! She is very nice and funny!
Very hard for a 200 level class. I would not recommend taking her.
Very hard class, and ALOT of work. She is a very hard grader. She's also kind of stubborn, set in her ways. But she knows what she's talking about and you will learn a lot.
no one was kidding when they rated Dr. Algren...yeah. Anyway, she definitely does lay the smackdown the first day but don't be driven off by this, because she is a nice person. Lots of work for a 200 level class, but if you do it and don't screw around, you should do okay. STUDY FOR THE TESTS!
Worst teacher I have taken in my school career. She might know what she's talking about but she expects way to much. No matter how hard you study you are screwed. I can't believe the school is letting her teach, it doest make Towson look good. She is very pesimistic and intimidating. Do not take!
BEWARE!!! she is by far the hardest professor i have ever taken. i would not recomend this professor to anyone because she is strict and it's her way or no way at all. there are a ton of papers to write and a difficult project, more work than any other class in the history of TU!
If you want to keep your sanity don't take this class. If you pass this class and actually still want to be in the PR business you deserve a gold medal. She is very intimidating, pesimistic, and should not be teaching a 200 level class. Oh, and don't expect to get grades back ever. She takes forever
hard class, but worth every bit. you can go in not knowing anything about PR and leave with experience in it. she's serious about the subject, but she's also helpful if you ask her
she wants to come off as a hard ass but she's not. she's tries to intimidate you but hey, that's the profession. she's very intelligent and you will learn a lot out of this class. you must study and do you work or you will fail.
She is the most pretentious bag of air that you could ever meet. As far a professor, it seems her ultimate goal is to destroy you rather than teach you. Between her self-absorbed pretentious conversations and her relentless desire to show her authority, your PR learning will be limited. RUN,RUN FAR
As a person, she's good. As a professor, not so much. She talks about her career(s) more than what we need to know for class. It seems as though she isnt willing to help because she does not hold study sessions or gives study guides. She gives you a campaign &expects you to know exactly what to do
She seems like a hard teacher but isn't. You do need to study for tests and don't take the final project to serious. She knows what she is talking about and is a nice lady.
Dr. Algren's class was not as hard as she makes it out to be. The assignments are time consuming at first until you learn more about PR then it becomes easier and easier. It really gives you a preview to the field and you walk out with more than just book smarts, you have some experience. She's a credible teacher with a lot of actual experience.
She is not as bad as people make her out to be. We had a very good experience with the main project and she gives a lot of leeway on assignments. Take the class, I promise it won't be any harder than your hardest class you ever took at Towson.
She says the class is going to be a lot harder than it really is. She doesn't grade as strick as she says she will, but the tests are hard. She only helps if you ask. She strays from the material a lot, so you have to keep up with the book work. She wants to talk about stuff other than the class topic, which means some things are left undiscussed.
She has a lot of experience and perspective to offer, but doesn't teach from the book and expects you to know a lot of random facts she never went over in class. Def study for the tests, they are not something you can wing. And oh yeah, she is a pretentious ****. Very unwilling to help unless you ask, and even then she is reluctant.
Fun class, really helpful professor, she had a good balance of academics and real world.
very odd sense of humor, a lot of professional experience. Large end of term assignment
Bad teacher with great experience in the workplace. Treats her 200 level class like 400 level. Very unclear, you HAVE to study for both exams (I did horrible on the first one) and gives incredibly difficult assignments. Not the kind of teacher that wants you to do well, she'll try to find ways to take points from you. just a bad experience.
You start off hating her but wind up loving her by the end of the class. The class definitely isn't as hard as she makes it seem and she's more lenient than you would think. Make sure she knows who you are and you won't have any problems. I actually learned a lot in this class.
She is the hardest teacher i have had by far...i studied for the first exam for 10 hours and only got a b....i got a lot of respect for her tho...she knows what shes doing...only take this class is you realllllly want to get into PR if not...dont even try
She acts helpful and then changes her mind...Be careful of this professor.
very hard. she gives alot of personal experience, which is good but the tests are immpossible. Only take this if you enjoy studying for 15+hours. Her goal is to weed as many ppl out of this major as possible. more then half the class bombed the 1st test.
Although the class is intimidating and can be tough, it was the best experience I have had yet at this school. I found myself repeating what I had learned in class. By far the best professor at this school. She scares you in the beginning with your grades but that's to make you work harder. She is very helpful and will meet with you whenever.
Not as bad as she makes the class out to be. Alot of writing but she allows 2 rewrites. Only used the book for the tests. Helpful if you visit her during office hours. Focuses on good writing skills vs a particular grade. Despite popular belief she does want u to pass.
If you want to have the most clear concept of what it's like to be a PR Practioner, take this class. Meg Algren is by far the best professor I've ever had, at Towson, and at my transfer school. Make sure you want to learn the information, because it is a lot.
If you are looking for a fun and exciting teacher than this is not the teacher to take. She tells corny jokes and tells some stories that aren't very interesting. Although she knows her material, she is not the best at teaching. Not my cup of tea as a professor. If you can take someone else do so.
my first instinct was to drop it after the first day...and i should've. She doesn't do notes..you have to try and write down key points as she is talking in class and the tests are quite difficult. ALOT of studying and memorizing is needed..espeically since she doesnt do powerpoint notes (she hates them). Stay clear of this class.
This class definitely helped me HOWEVER, it is very intimidating. You spend the first half of the semester writing SO much and she gives you an F on everything. Expect your paper to be flooded with red pen. Her comments are very helpful but she is extremely picky about writing. Midterm and Final were tricky but the overall class is laid back.
Dr. Algren is a great mentor and her classes are very interesting but I have to say her class was the hardest class I have had yet. She doesn't do review guides, notes, etc, and you're responsible for EVERYTHING in the book, even though she doesn't discuss any of it in class. I studied for this class more than all my other classes combined
Taken her twice. Amazing teacher and really fun if you engage. She is tough if she spots a weakness in you. Work hard and just follow her guidelines and you will do fine.
I had her for newswriting. She is very intimidating but it was my best class. You must do a lot of work. Her modo is that 'the C is the average grade. And not many people get above.' BUT she teaches you. If you read the text the midterm is easy. Right from it. No final. A lot of papers, but your writing will definitely improve a lot.
this teacher is impossible to please. i try so hard to do exactly what she says but she never is satisfied and won't ever give good constructive criticism. I am begging for a C in this class.
Please do not take this teacher, I know there are plenty of other teachers that are much better. She called me incompetent and I am an A student except in her class. She thinks the world revolves around her classes, and she goes on this website and writes reviews about herself.
you MUST be able to write according to HER standards. Do not take the class if you are a poor writer. BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD AND BECOME STRESSED OUT
The writing expectations are directed towards her standards. I entered that class loving to write and wanting to pursue journalism, but quickly found out that my writing was not good enough for her. Be expected to learn a new style of writing and perfect it in time for assignments.
Waste of time, energy, and money. Learned nothing, stressed myself out and ended up with a D. I'm a typically good student and usually admire most of my teachers. This one awful. Take someone else.
Prof Algren robs kids of a future!
if you take this class be prepared to be stressed out, unclear directions for papers with topics that are pointless, doesn't hand back graded papers before assigning new ones so you basically have no idea what you're doing wrong, her grading is not consistent, should I keep going?
BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER AT TOWSON. SHE THINKS THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND HER, CANNOT TEACH, DOESN'T HELP YOU IF YOU SEE HER DURING OFFICE HOURS SHE LITERALLY JUMPS AWAY FROM YOUR PAPER. SHE TEACHES THIS AND A PR WRITING CLASS AND IMPLEMENTS THE SAME BS STYLE OF WRITING FOR BOTH. DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER THERE ARE MANY OTHER COMPETENT ONES.
VERY RUDE. its impossbile to ask a simple question without being singled out in class. the assignments were unclear. this class is so stressful im hoping to pull a B in this class but I have no idea because she keeps you in the dark about your grade all semester because she thinks we should track all of our grades.
Raging PR elitist. Very liberal, reads the textbook straight, makes you feel like an idiot. CYNICAL OF ANYONE WHO DOESN'T WORSHIP PR. You will get a bad grade if you don't agree with her views on politics/current events/public figures. Worst prof I've ever had at Towson. Not a lie.
Wow idk why Algren has so many haters on here...shes one of the best teachers Ive ever had at Towson. She's hilarious and the class is not hard at all if you actually come to class and take notes. You do hafta read the book but she is very helpful and makes the info easy to understand, interesting, and relatable to the real world.
This class was hard because it required more studying than I was used to, but Dr. Algren is a great professor. She knows a lot about PR and gives you a realistic look at the career. It was annoying that she didn't give study guides, but the tests weren't that bad, and she ends up giving extra credit even though she says she doesn't.
Ok, so her class isn't easy. But if this is for your major, you should be serious about it anyway & should want to put in some effort. She's tough, but she teaches you a lot of really practical stuff! & although she seems intimidating, she'll work with you to try and help you out. Just focus on following her directions & you'll be ok. Buy the book.
Ok, so this class was hard. She's a TOUGH grader. But don't let her scare you off in the beginning. I learned so much, & if this is for your major, you'll benefit a lot from it. Surprisingly, Algren is REALLY helpful & accommodating. Don't take it expecting an easy A. But if you're willing to put in effort, you'll be ok. Gotta be strong though!
Assigns papers before handing back your last assignment so you never know why you are getting bad grades. She then continues to rip you apart for repeating mistakes on your paper. Rude, biased, and arrogant, sounds like a great teacher right?
A lot of paper with unclear instructions. Nothing is typed out clearly. Lectures are pointless. She has pop quizzes on the NY Times front cover. She is RUDE and will call you out in front of the class. She told a classmate to change her major because she was a horrible writer, instead of encouraging her to do better: 1st graded paper, mid semester
DO NOT TAKE HER! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She is constantly contradicting herself because she is extremely unorganized. She claims to have 30 years in the "buis" but she can't teach to save her life. Doesn't explain her grading system. Our class started the semester with 30 students, now we have 7. She does however teach you to be a mindless writer.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ALGREN! She is one of the worst professors I have ever had. All of her assignment are so unclear and she is too hard of a grader. For the first paper we turned in only 4 people passed with a C, everyone else failed. There are 5 papers you write and our class had to take a 22 chapter exam..2 weeks before the final. Crazy!
This class was not an easy one. A lot of students had problems with the professor, but they also weren't willing to put in the time needed to pass it. I honestly wrote every paper the morning it was due and still managed an A-. If you pay attention and don't go in there expecting the worst, it'll be ok. Quizzes actually HELP your grade, just read!
This class was terrible. File had 30students in the class and when I decided to drop it there was only 6 students left. Her assignments are very unclear. She will tell you to get on the computer in class to look up information then 5mintues later she will yell at you for having something up on your computer and deduct points from her grade.
She is the hardest grader I have ever encountered in my life. her instructions are not always clear but she is very nice and will help you. definitely not an easy A but if you're willing to work HARD you will pass
i dont care if you need this class to graduate, do not take it and just dont graduate. she has no desire to help anyone in fact it seems as if her goal is to fail majority of her students and make them feel dumb and terrible about themselves. it doesnt matter if you try hard she wants you to fail. unclear about assignments and is the hardest grader
VERY hard professor. All lecture- no handouts, no powerpoint, no anything, but expects you to remember every little thing she says for the tests. Very unclear and not particularly organized. Its impossible to study for this class. ONLY take this if it is 100% mandatory. It is not worth it otherwise.
She can be very tough because she is very unclear with what she looks for in her assignments. She says you don't have to come to class, but you should go, she says a lot of things that aren't in the book, then puts them on the test. Her tests aren't hard if you study the days leading up to the test, but don't cram the night before.
Don't let these comments scare you away. Professor Algren is actually a really nice person, just believes in tough love. If you actually go to class (she gives extra credit for that) and take notes during, you should have no trouble achieving at least a B.
Professor Algren is an awesome professor! She definitely knows what she's talking about. GO TO CLASS! majority of the test is from her lecture (take good notes), but you still will need to read as well. Do not be discouraged by previous reviews. I was scared to take the class & it ended up being one of my favorite courses this semester. Fun class!
One of my favorite people on campus, she is a fantastic lady. Lectures are insightful and current. if you dont attend class you have no shot, but she makes it worth you showing up. very helpful and availible outside of class. loved this class and intend on taking more that she teaches.
She's great! I was scared to take her class because of the bad comments but she's SO nice. She doesn't post powerpoints so you HAVE to show up to class and read the textbook to do well. Her multiple choice tests are based on the lecture only. She relates everything to real life which is great and she's not mean at all. Just show up and take notes.
Sweet old lady but you will be working your butt off in this class. There is no slacking off or you will be behind. She gives extra credit which is nice. Tests are HARD
People complain about her grading, but she is just emphasizing the importance of grammar. If you can't cut it in this class, mcom may not be for you. Take her if you actually want to succeed in upper level mcom classes. You MUST read the book and pay attention in lectures, but she will review test info the class before exams. Have a good attitude.
Dr. Algren is extremely negative, puts her students down and makes comments about how we will never be successful. She is very unclear about assignments and gives no feedback. She is a tough grader and gives little to no partial credit. After reading these reviews I was going to suck it up and be prepared to work hard but avoid taking her!
I have had a terrible experience in this class. She doesn't tell you what she wants to see in any of the papers and ends up failing you because you do not include what she wanted to see. She doesn't teach the chapter until after you take (and fail) the test. She is very negative and does not want her class to do well. AVOID HER
this professor never gives clear lectures. she makes you read these long chapters which is fine, but then doesn't clarify what's in the chapters at all. the book that she assigns is very fluffy and takes forever to get to the point. the exams and quizzes that she gives are hard because she says she goes over the things not them when she doesn't.
She doesn't use powerpointsblackboard, so you must go to class to get notes! Her tests are hard and you really must study, she doesn't mess around. She did offer some extra credit as well. Went to her office hours multiple times but does not really help unless you have very specific questions.
Barely uses textbook, says we don't need to know certain things in text book and then they are on the test. She puts random questions and things she says in class on the tests. In lectures she talks the entire time using no visual aids or boards to follow along with. Just don't.
Professor Algren isn't as bad as everyone is making her out to be. You definitely have to have decent writing skills to succeed but my writing improved so much in her class. Participate and show that you're making an effort to improve. She'll respect you for it. The tests are difficult but you have to listen during class and read read read.
DO NOT TAKE HER NO MATTER WHAT. such a rude woman and her voice is so irritating. this is a pre rec and she grades so hard. it is all journalistic style when some people are not interested in that. all she cares about is herself. attendance isnt "mandatory" but if you dont go you wont understand anything. shes the worst teacher at Towson.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!! such a rude woman and her voice is so irritating. this is a pre rec and she grades so hard. it is all journalistic style when some people are not interested in that. all she cares about is herself. attendance isnt "mandatory" but if you dont go you wont understand anything. shes the worst teacher at Towson.
The first about 23 of the semester was practice So, there are like 8 papers, 5 exams, and 7 pop quizzes squeeze in the last about 5-6 weeks of the semester. She is a tough grader, not consistent on her critiques, if you want your paper reviewed by her you have to have it done 2 wks before it is due. Expects you to know things she did not teach.
I am a Junior at Towson and out of all the classes I have taken, this one was by far the worst. I've never struggled with writing, and she ripped everything I wrote to shreds. She is cruel and looks down on you if you say anything wrong or ask for help. I don't know how this woman hasn't gotten fired. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
DO NOT PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THE MISERY! This will be the worst class you will ever take!!! She really is an unfair teacher. She gets pleasure in failing students.
She is hands down the worst professor I have had at Towson. If you are forced to take Writing for the Media, good luck. She ripped all of my writing to shreds. She is a tough grader. When I say tough, I mean very tough. I am a Journalism and New Media and PR major and she basically hated everything I wrote. I withdrew from the class and the track.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS . HORRID IS THE ONLY WORD FOR IT.
Don't get too scared from the comments from people who withdrew lol. This class can seem scary at first, but it's not as long as you do your work and get help when needed. Be prepared to have a lot of papers towards the end of the semester, she's pretty flexible with the length of them. You need the books. The writing center helped me tonssss
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Your only grades are a few tests (which are full of trick questions) and a few papers (she will find any reason to fail your paper.) Good luck if you decide to take this teacher. She is an extremely unfair grader and will rip your writing apart for no reason. Teaches the class like its 1990 and loves to watch you fail.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR for this class!! She will ruin your GPA! I am an A and B student and this is the worst I've ever done in a class. Doesn't hand out rubrics for papers so basically writing blind and she tears your papers to shreds when she's grading. Very hard to get and A on a paper.
I loved Professor Algren! She has amazing experience in the field, so she knows what she's talking about. Classes are lecture style & your grade is 4 exams + a paper. I didn't think the tests were difficult, she spells out everything you need to know in a review session the class prior. Pay attention, read your textbook, take notes- you'll be fine.
EXTREMELY tough grader. Entire grade is based on very few things. Doesn't use BlackBoard or keep any track of your grade, so you won't be able to keep track of how well you're doing. Would not recommend her.
Lots of people see how tough Dr Algren can be and they drop the class right away, but it's just because they're afraid of hard work. She knows her stuff and you'll learn a lot about writing, but she grades hard and you'll have to put in a lot of effort. But that's what college is for and her "shadowing" project helps build real world connections.
Dr. Algren was a tough professor, but the class was straight forward. You had 3 tests, a paper, and a final, that's it. She doesn't do review sessions, but if you take good notes on her lectures then you'll be totally fine. These notes are incredibly important. The class gave me a great introduction to PR, and I am glad that I had her to explain it
