She is hard, but definitely fair and an incredible teacher.
Her lectures are very clear, sometimes she can become impatient but does answer any questions asked. Her tests are very long which makes them difficult to finish adn she chooses questions that challenge you rather than just the basics. There is a lot of supplemental help that goes along with this class like group tutoring, SI, and office hours.
Dr. Bruehl is an INCREDIBLE teacher. Chemistry was not my strong point before taking this class, and now having completed it, my understanding of chemistry has definitelt increased. Take her class!
Lively, funny, obviously very passionate about the material, Bruehl is an outstanding chemistry professor. All educators in the sciences could learn a thing or two about teaching from Bruehl.
Doesn't care about the success of her students. Multiple choice exams, each question worth 6 pts--no partial credit available-thus we can't learn from mistakes. She doesn't believe in immediate reliable feedback. She's horrible and mean if you try to see her one-on-one. Worst professor I've ever had, also the first professor to have given me a C.
Dr Bruehl is one if my favorite professors! Her slides are extremely helpful and she is quite easy to understand. All her exams have 20 points extra credit, so while the questions are challenging, it's still easy to get a good grade. I love her!
By far the best chemistry professor at UCD. She expects that students put in the time and effort required to succeed, yet she is also willing to put in a lot of effort herself. She is obviously passionate and enjoys chemistry. Entertaining, clear, challenging. Sometimes speaks fast, so read the book before class to keep up.
Dr. Bruehl was extremely rude to me when I went and tried to get help from her. She snapped at every comment I made. Her mastering chemistry never helped you learn. Just told you if it was right or wrong and not even that until the due date. Would not recommend her as a professor
I cannot stand this lady. She doesn't care about the success of her students and is not approachable if you are having issues. Stay away from Dr. Bruehl's class!! Homework problems are easy but you are tested on MUCH harder questions.
Dr. Bruehl is an extraordinary teacher. She makes a very difficult subject accessible, and she is the ONLY gen chem prof at UCD who actually does example problems in class. She was encouraging and helpful during office hours, gave good suggestions, and cared about my success. She answers emails in minutes -- even on weekends. Highly recommend.
Passionate, accessible, demanding, tough, strict, intense. She's the best professor you'll ever have.
She is really helpful and awesome in her office hours. She's not going to do your homework but she explains really well, if you are lazy DON'T take her class but if you wanna learn do it! she's the best!!!!!
Worst professor ever, not very professional at all!
Dr. Bruehl is the best Gen Chem prof on campus. Like another rater said, if you are lazy, she is not the one for you, but if you come to class and pay attention, you will learn Gen Chem. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
A lot of opportunity to pass the class even if ya fail one to two test. Her test is a little tricky, I suggest you to double check your answer and watch for mistake. Also take her class in the afternoon she go a little crazy in the morning.
DO NOT take Bruehl unless you are: A)A chemist, B)Planning on becoming a chemist, C)Going to med school at Harvard, D)Wanting to lower your GPA. Seriously, worst teacher. Not approachable, moves too fast, ridiculously hard tests (the SI instructors admitted to not being able to figure out some of the questions)- no adequate study tools- STAY AWAY!
do the work and it's easy to get a top grade.
Do you marvel at how organized both chem 1 & 2 lab books are? Me neither. Want more confusion then take Bruehl's class! It's not that chemistry is hard, she is just REALLY BAD at explaining concepts unless you are a natural at math and/or are only taking THIS class. Tests bear no relation to ANY hw and they're too hard! DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!
One of the hardest professors I've ever had, but you WILL KNOW YOUR STUFF when you leave her class (useful if you're going to OChem). Even though she is hard, she offers tons of extra credit...her Exams are extremely difficult but there are 20 extra credit points on each one. Do LOTS of practice problems and study regularly and you'll do great!
Dr. Bruehl is awesome! If you are looking for an "easy" A, she may not be a good fit for you but you can definitely get an A if you work hard. The stuff she teaches and how she teaches it will pay off big time if you are going to take the MCAT or DAT. You will be thankful that she made you struggle a little when test day arrives.
Really intense DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR SUMMER unless this is literally the ONLY thing you are doing. You will be spending HOURS doing her 'one try' HW. Not good for people who are nervous test takers, she makes it wayy worse.
This Professor is hard but she taught me everything I need to know for the MCAT
she's horrible and mean if you try to see her one-on-one. Worst professor I've ever had
For Chem 2, she is very hard... but then again, Chem 2 is really hard. She is not an easy A, but a great teacher.
Dr. Bruehl is tough but you will come out of the class with some serious chem skills. She is absolutely terrifying but she posts her lecture material and has the material out there to figure out what is going on.
I think its funny how some people think she's so hard and that's bad. She IS hard, but so is chemistry, and if you want to be an MD like me, then you'd better get used to hard. She taught me everything I need to know for the MCAT and I'm ready for the challenge!
I can honestly tell you that Dr. Bruehl not only helped me master chemistry material that I struggled with in High School but she also helped me master Gen Chem I. Her in-class practice problems are key to helping you understand concepts. She is very clear in what she expects you to know for tests and gives plenty of extra credit as well.
One of the best Professor I've had! You put in the effort and you'll earn the grade you deserve. Homework and in class are fair game on the exam. Pay attention to sig figs especially on the exams!! Going to class is a must so is the book and tons of practice! Stay on top of it and office hour is a great way to get to know her better, she's amazing!
This class is difficult, but if you attend each class and do all of the practice problems you will definitely understand chemistry very well. Bruehl is a hard teacher, but she makes sure you understand everything you need to. If you try, you'll do well in this clas.
Dr. Bruehl can be a great teacher. However, you just never know who is going to show up to lecture or office hours...the warm, personable, caring teacher who genuinely wants to help every student succeed...or the impatient, biting, condescending teacher that treats students as less than human. Great when she's on, sucks when she's not. Good luck.
She is a GREAT Teacher! She is very hard but I can really say I understand chemistry and I feel very comfortable going on. Make sure you do all of the practice problems and you will have no problem on the exams.
Dr. Bruehl is a great professor. She puts a lot of effort into her teaching & expects her student to learn as much as they can. You should start strong. Do the problems everyday. Take the advantage of LAs & TAs. I wish her the best.
The BEST professor in the entire Chemistry Department. Very difficult, but life-changing.
Dr. Bruehl is a great lecturer. That said, she is incredibly tough and her tests are awfully difficult. She expects you to dedicate every second to her class only and be an expert. She was impatient and rude when I went to her for help. I would recommend taking a different chem professor.
BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD!! she can be intimidating but that's how she weeds out the ones who want an easy A. this class was not an easy A but if you work hard you will genuinely learn. she expects you to put in effort (WHOA!?!) and if you do the good grades will follow. she cares and prepares you well.
Dr. Bruehl is a professional. She expects you to be a respectful student and will let you know if you're not. Practice, attend class, and read the book and you will do well. I'm definitely signing up for her Gen Chem I & II classes!
I dont recommend Bruehl. She was condescending and rude towards her students. She goes over material extremely fast and expects you to be on her level of understand chem. Her TA for lab sucks and is extremely rude.
An insanely good teacher that makes everything you need to know crystal clear. There are no surprises with her; she practically hands you test material on a platter. That said she is very tough. If you are not ready to sit down the entire class period, 100% focused, and ready to dedicate hours outside class to her, she is not a good choice for you.
Dr. Bruehl is a great "scientist". This said, she is very strict and has little patiences for lagging students who are not able to pickup the concepts quickly. Student who have an average understanding of chemistry should not seek her for an instructor. Dr. Bruehl's course design is for advanced students with a solid grasp on the course subject.
Dr. Bruehl is an excellent professor. I came into her class having not taken chemistry since my second year of high school and I got an A. Contrary to what you might hear, she isn't tricky. She emphasizes what is important and then it is up to you to practice. If you put in the work, you will get the results. Do practice problems and you'll be fine
Wow! She is possibly one of the rudest professors I have ever encountered. She is incredibly condescending. I will say, she is a great lecturer but don't bother going to office hours, unless you enjoy being talked down to.
I took her for CHEM 1 and liked her teaching style but when I took her for CHEM II, she was like a different professor. For CHEM 1, she was clear and lectured effectively. But for CHEM II, forget it. She was very confusing, and so, so rude! I'm pretty sure that her main objective if you come to office hours, is to make you cry.
I think Dr Bruhel is pretty good. I know she is demanding because she wants us to learn. I don't agree that she is rude. I think she is making a challenge for us. Ya, she can be a little tough, but that's just her way. I'm learning a lot from her.
I never would have imagined she would make it almost impossible for me to pass. I went to class everyday and studied but it didn't make a difference. To say shes tough is an understatement. She is tough, professional, and disconnected with students. She is also very condescending and rude; I wasn't worth her time to help. Find another professor!!!
Dr. Bruehl is easily one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever had. I'm coming back to school after a seven year break, and had never taken any sort of chemistry... I had to work my ASS off- but in the end, her clarity and helpfulness got me my A. Her course is HEAVILY weighted on 3 exams (80%). She is not rude, young people are too sensitive.
She cares a lot about her students and teaching. She may be a little intimidating to some, but she is actually a very kind professor. She is clearly passionate about Chemistry and puts a lot of energy into her lectures.
she is one of the most intimidating yet inspiring teachers I ever had! Make SURE you do the practice problems, I did not and I know many peers didnt either because there was simply so much but over break I did them and it really helped me on my final exam.
Dr. Bruehl is very intimidating and can be a tad cranky but she is an amazing lecturer! She makes it very clear what is expected of you and what you need to know. She emphasizes that practice makes perfect and she is totally right, you must do the practice problems in order to do well in the class. I strongly recommend her for any chemistry course!
The most competent human being I have ever encountered. No one will explain chemistry to you better than Dr. Bruehl. Tests are absolutely fair, no surprises or tricks and lots of extra credit. Demands respect, which is more than deserved. The result is the most orderly classroom I've had. I wish she taught every class I ever have to take.
Bruehl is very, very upfront about her expectations. I thought she was an incredible teacher, but many find her rude. Honestly, she just has high expectations for herself and the class. Not an easy A, but worth it.
Bruehl's class is definitely not easy. Most of the students end up dropping the class. She knows chemistry and she wants you to learn, but only if you put in the effort. Read the chapters and do the homework! She also does not tolerate rude students, so be prepared to not leave the class or talk. She will call you out in front of the class.
She's not as scary as everyone makes her out to be. She is a really tough grader but she'll put at much into it as you will. Go to her office hours and she is more than willing to help you until you get it. I took Honors so the tests are tough but they are manageable, they just make you really think and apply several concepts.
Be there for the lectures, understand math---you're good. Tons of extra credit... I finished with 113%
Dr. Bruehl has been one of the best professors I've had so far.
Dr. Bruehl is no joke. She's hard but she makes you work for your grade. She is an excellent professor to take. Don't be afraid! She makes sure you learn. On finals day, she made a student cry because the student didn't remove her materials from her desk for the final. But she doesn't bite.
She expects you to be on time SO DON'T BE LATE. She does a lot of active learning in class as well as assignments that are assigned but not turned in. It's important to read and understand her notes. If you don't get it, go to her LA help sessions.
There is a lot of math involved in this class, so be prepared. If you want to get up during lecture BEWARE.
I am three years out of Honors General Chemistry. Looking back, Dr. Bruehl's teaching style and workload was seminal to my understanding of academic commitment and chemistry as a language of reality. Take her honors course if you want to grow as a scientist.
I had Dr. Bruehl for gen chem 1&2. let me just say how thankful I am for having her as a professor. If you are a chem major I HIGHLY recommend taking her. She is a great lecturer and her teaching will stick with you (if you come to class and pay attention). She is crazy about sig figs but trust me, you will be thanking her later!!!
Doctor Breuhl is awesome at explaining things but her tests are really hard. But then me and my friends figured out that the test has lots of book problems on it. So we did all the book problems and the second test wasnt so hard. There were some problems from class on it too. The way she describes things in class really helps too.
ALEKS is an online CHEM homework and she gives a LOT! I am exhausted from ALEKS homework. Don't take her if you don't have a lot of time or just trying to pass. Lecture is very heavy, BUT she gives a LOT of EXTRA CREDIT!!! You will pass if you do the extra credit!!!! * Don't take if you just want to pass or an easy prof.
This professor starts out by giving you lots of extra credit and then failing you for the rest of the semester. Although her lectures are great, the preparation for the tests wasn't quite there. Even after doing all the assigned work and visiting the TA and even signing up for tutoring, I failed the class. Good luck.
I had this prof last semester (fall 2016) as well as this one (spring 2017). I actually made getting into her class again my biggest priority &scheduled my other classes around it. Her lecture style works really well for me & she does a fantastic job of explaining concepts & going through practice problems. Definitely do book probs& keep up w/ALEKS
Make sure you don't ask any questions. Although she is a good professor she is very rude and condescending. Seriously though, don't ask any questions unless you're ready to get your day ruined.
Dr. Bruehl is the best professor I have ever taken a class from. She doesn't tolerate disrespect, nor should she. She is an incredible lecturer and definitely knows her stuff. Yes her class is tough, but it taught me the rigor and dedication necessary for college success. Also, she's happy to help you if you show you're dedicated.
Incredible lecturer who knows chemistry down to the tiniest detail. She makes her exams extremely difficult because she's teaching you how to critically think. Her honors class requires hours of dedication outside of class, but you come out understanding chemistry in a way you never have before. Go to her office hours- she's a gem in person.
She really makes you work for your grade but it's not impossible.
Dr. Bruehl has the most incredible science lectures I have ever encountered in my academic career. She is BRILLIANT and has a great way of lecturing, if you show up to class and pay attention. This DOES NOT mean her class was easy in any regard, difficult tests and you must work hard. But you will understand chemistry better and in every aspect.
In med school now, Dr. Bruehl is still the best teacher I've ever had, hands down. Her class taught me how to learn, how to work hard, and she personally continues to be a huge inspiration. This class will be the cornerstone on which you can build your whole academic career. The worst part is that all subsequent teachers will be a let down.
Amazing professor, but harsh when it comes to tests. When I took the class, it consisted of 3 major tests and a final. The tests are very difficult to pass
Ok teacher, but the rudest human being I've ever encountered. Unnecessarily so. It's perfectly understandable to demand respect, but this goes far beyond that. Agree with another student that you shouldn't ask her anything (no matter how respectfully) unless you want to have your day ruined. Taking Knaus next Sem.b/c I need an approachable TEACHER.
GREAT prof -- definitely demands respect, and gives it right back to you if you show you are serious. If you aren't serious, then take someone else. I AM serious, and I learned a awesome amount!
Dr. Bruehl's class is very difficult. Not only is she a tough grader, but she does not really help you outside of class. Most of the time she has an attitude whenever you try to ask a question. I personally don't like her teaching style and would not recommend her to anyone.
I wish she taught more classes. You get a full index card on exams, and so much extra credit. Her exams reflect the lectures/lecture problems. Her energy and enthusiasm for teaching make her stand out from other chem professors. She is wonderful. I have a 1y.o. and work full-time. If I can make well over a 100% in her class, you can too.
Chemistry is by far my weakest subject but I actually found myself enjoying her lectures and I received an A in Chem 1 and a B+ in Chem 2 which was good enough for me. I took her last year but came back to write a review because I really appreciated her teaching style. If you work hard, you'll get an easy A.
Lecture is besrable, however the exams are really hard, she is a tough grader, and she is overall pretty dang mean. I dont recommend her.
Good prof, lecture cool. Make you learn to think
Dr Bruehl is absolutely amazeballs at teaching, and if you're serious about learning chemistry or going to med school, take her. However, if you're a slacker looking for an easy A, then re-think your life choices. Study, do your homework, be prepared for quizzes, and you can get 100%+, even after bombing the first exam. And don't walk in late. :)
Planned to take Knaus for Chem II, but after seeing some students felt she doesn't prepare you well for OChem decided to take Bruehl again. Maybe she's been reading these reviews bc her demeanor's softened a bit this sem. and for the better. SO EASY if you go to class, do ALEKS, lecture and ch. problems. No outside help to date. A+ in Chem I & II
Dr. Bruehl is quite good at what she does, but she doesn't fool around. You MUST work hard in Chemistry to do well, and Dr. Bruehl will expect you to do just that. She's a sweetheart, very passionate about chemistry, and accessible--she even wants you to visit her office hours (SO DO IT!) Perhaps the best chemistry prof at UCD.
I never take the time to rate my professors, but Dr. Bruehl deserves an 5-star review. I took her for a full year, and she is a gifted teacher. She offers ample opportunities to succeed and appreciates a hard worker. DON'T show up late and apply yourself in her class; you will earn the grade you want! I cant say enough great things about her!
Aleks is the enemy. She gives extra credit based off of that. Her lectures are amazing and does teach you the information. The test however is what drops your grade. Never felt prepared for it. Its like the questions she asks are 10 levels above what she teaches. Quizzes are fairly easy. Makes time for students. Don't piss her off or come in late.
Dr. Bruehl is probably the best professor I have ever had. I learned so much from her and I would definitely take her again. She set the bar very high, which was difficult. She prepares you for the MCAT, DAT and more. She wants the best for the students and offers her help.
Best professor I probably will ever have. Subject material is very tough, but Dr. Bruehl clearly has a passion for chemistry as well as teaching. The more you go to office hours the more you will enjoy her class. I have become a better student because of her teaching.
Tough but fair. Can make you feel stupid for asking questions sometimes. She is crazy smart and sometimes makes things unnecessarily hard. Study for the class and you can pass.
She is a wonderful teacher! I learned so much from her class. She doesn't just read off her power points, but explains them in depth. The best way to succeed in the class is by knowing how to perform all of the lecture problems she provides for quantitative test questions and reviewing the power points for qualitative test questions. DONT BE LATE!!
The BEST professor I have ever had. Provides you with every tool you need to succeed (as long as you choose to utilize it), and is incredibly passionate about chemistry. A bit of a hardass, but her time is definitely valuable so it's understandable. 3 tests, last one is lightly cumulative. If you're pre med, look no further.
An intelligent, knowledgeable and dedicated professor. She is a true replica of how a professor should teach. Provides so many resources for you to learn the subject and reassures you that you are responsible for your own grade. She is pretty strict. Don't show up late, don't use your phone. Can come off condescending and intimidating though.
She is a good professor who is passionate about chemistry, however very difficult if you've not had prior chemistry classes in high school. She also teaches very fast. You really need to work for your grade and I mean 3-4 hours every day of chemistry problems that is if you have trouble with math. If you don't have trouble 1-2 hours will suffice.
Such an entitled professor. Acts like she is the smartest person on earth and a lot of her assignments are pointless. Take this professor if you want an unfair workload compared to the rest of your classes with a lot of pointless busy work.
SHE'S A GEM. I highly recommend her to everyone wants to learn chemistry seriously.
She is the best chemistry professor I've taken.
Honestly, Dr Bruehl is quite a fine teacher, but as a person she is incredebly rude and condescending which restricts many in class from participating for fear of scrutiny.
She's great! You wanna learn? This is how you do it
My-oh-my she is far and away the rudest, most condescending, anger-inducing professors I've ever had. She knows just how to turn a good day into a bad one. If you want to learn chemistry with a side of blatant disrespect, then by all means take Ms. Bruehl!
She is so inspirational. She wrote me a great rec letter too!
Exams were extremely difficult and it seems like they were designed to trick and confuse students. Unapproachable, rude, mocking, generally unpleasant. Went out of her way to embarrass students in class, it seemed like. There was a ton of topics for the online homework and some had nothing to do with the lectures. Take someone else if you can.
Dr Bruhl is the best teacher ever. Am in med school now. I know my application wouldn't have been as strong as it was without what I learned in her classes. If you want to learn how to think and learn, take HER!
Very hard condescending professor. She is very good and explains concepts very good there is no arguing about that. She can be rude if you don't follow directions or learn the material. After taking her class, I lost a lot of interest in Chemistry. In addition, changing my major from Chemistry to Mechanical Engineering.
Great! Excellent teacher!
She's a bit tough. She's nice but has no tolerance for students talking or coming late to class. The class usually doesn't do well on quizzes and exams. The tests are easy to fail because each question is easily weighted. I wish she would make it easier to pass exams. Extra credit is given on exams and homework though so it helps. She's caring.
She is very intimidating and it can be hard to ask questions. She doesnt stand for disrespect, so some students find that she handles it in a rude way. That being said, she is a great teacher. Its a college chemistry class and she expects you to treat it that way. Of course its hard. But her expectations are very clear, while difficult sometimes
Dr. Bruehl is nice and all, BUT she will test you on certain topics you never even learned in class which makes it frustrating. Her tests are unfair compared to other chem professors. My only advice is to take a different chem professor.
Great teacher and amazing lectures. You'll learn a lot if you put in the work. The tests are difficult but not impossible. It was the perfect amount of difficulty to keep me engaged.
Read all the chapters, study sessions, and no matter how hard I've studied I failed. PRACTICE PROBLEMS NOTHING LIKE HER EXAMS! You can have a notecard but it's pointless. I know many people who dropped/failed her class. I'm retaking Chem 2 and omg the difference as in I have a A. I never had a teacher tell a class to drop as much as she did.
As a person, I wasn't Dr. Bruehl's biggest fan, as she can be very intimidating at times. Besides that she is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her lectures are amazing and she makes Chemistry very easy to understand. As long as you study you'll do well in this class. You get a notecard on the exam, and a lot of extra credit with Aleks.
Dr. Bruehl is one of those teachers that I think people either absolutely love or can barely stand. I think that if you're actually going into a chem major or something similar, you'll probably get a lot out of her class. However, she's really hard on grading and disrespect during class. Big lectures. Go to office hours!
Really good lectures! I really understand this stuff now. Happy I was able to take her class!
Margaret creates tests that are incredibly unrealistic to complete in the allotted time. Exams compose 60% of overall grade. On an exam the average grade was 60% and she said that is what she was aiming for. Do not take her class if you hope to have a respectable science GPA. Rude to students who ask for clarification during lecture.
Just finished taking exam 2 in her class. I studied what she told us would be in the exam and guess what? It was on the exam! Lots of extra credit. Im gonna get the bonus for doing better in exam 2 and Im gonna get a A in the course. I feel so confident because my studing really pays off!
She is not the best teacher take honestly. She grades very harshly and her exam are extremely difficult. the example questions are nothing like what is on the exam. She also does not provide study guides for her exams. She only gives you about 15 minutes for quizzes. Your overall grade depends on how well you do on her quizzes and exams.
Such a great teacher. Gives ALOT of extra credit. Only bad thing is that she didnt give many quizzes this semester. So that means grade is mostly Alexs and exams. Its ok though , cause of all the extra credits. Take her! I learned a lot!
This was the worst professor I've ever had. Our midterm class avg. was a 50%. Very condescending. I asked a question about the material once in class & instead of answering she went off for 10 minutes about how disrespectful I was for holding the class back. Put in 20+ hours a week outside of class & still barely passed with C. Exams are horrible.
This professor is incredibly well suited for online learning in a pandemic. She offers students so many resources and extra credit opportunities as well as personal tutoring if you need it. I learned so much through her teaching and felt prepared for Genchem2. Yes, the course is difficult-- you won't find an "easy" GenChem1. Take it with her!
I took Dr. Bruehl's class remotely during the pandemic. Over Zoom, she was a great lecturer and very willing to stop and answer questions. While her tests were pretty difficult and very time-constraining, I would say overall her class was good. Definitely take this class if you are a STEM major or pre-health.
